AWARDS
2011WINNERS By Emily Griffin
For months Savvy Kids readers had the opportunity to cast their votes for the second annual Savvy Kids Awards. Through online votes and ballots received through snail mail, nearly a thousand votes were cast this year. The votes were counted and the results are in! Find the winners and runners-up of the second annual Savvy Kids Awards right here. You, our loyal readers, voted for the businesses you felt were the best in their fields--from pediatric clinics to chicken strips. “I’m looking forward to reading the results,” Holly Pruett of North Little Rock said. “I’m a stay-at-home mom with three kids. Money’s tight and I don’t want to waste it. Knowing other families like these businesses tells me I should use 52 | savvy kids september 2011

them too.” Pruett’s take on the Savvy Kids Awards is what our staff hopes to achieve. Ask any business owner and they will tell you word of mouth is the best way to recruit new customers. We know, these “Best of the Best” type sections pop up in publications all over, but we at Savvy Kids tried to do something many others haven’t. Kids had the opportunity to voice their opinions on their top picks as well as parents! On the following pages you will find a little information about the winners, as well as a resource guide at the end of this section. Congratulations to all of the Savvy Kids Awards winners!

Dad: Jacob Kleck, Manufacturing Engineer for Caterpillar, Inc. Mom: Hillary Kleck, Electrical Engineer, Owner of Sensory Sun Educational Technologies, and homeschool teacher to Madilyn Child: Madilyn, age 6 Current Projects and Activities: We are involved with Arkansas chapter of the National Association for Parents of Children with Visual Impairments (NAPVI). The group offers information, education, emotional support and networking opportunities to parents of visually impaired kids. NAPVI also partners with other professionals, facilities, and organizations in the state to ensure that the needs of visually impaired children are met. We are also involved with Miracle League Baseball. This will be Madilyn’s third season playing with the Astros! We are her biggest fans! Parenting Style: Very interactive, but sometimes we just have to let Madilyn explore on her own. We are constantly trying new activities with her at home and in the community, as well as attending conferences across the US. Life lesson learned from parenthood: Madilyn was born blind in 2005. Being her parents has taught us that there are new and different ways of learning, sometimes we just have to close our 6 | savvy kids september 2011
eyes and experience her world. She opened up an entire non-visual world we had never experienced before. As busy parents, how do you keep everything organized? We keep a family calendar and plan meals in advance to keep trips to the grocery store to a minimum and give us more time in the evenings for whatever we have going on. Communication is key! Sharing responsibilities and doing tasks together make everything more enjoyable and less stressful. Favorites: Book: To Kill a Mockingbird Music: Jack Johnson, Zac Brown Band Place to shop for you: We love IO Metro in West Little Rock Place to shop for kids: Hobby and craft stores, we find many materials for adapting toys, etc, for Madilyn. HERO

Big Heart The story of how one girl spent her summer helping homeless pets. By Emily Griffin
At the age of seven, Taurine Main knew she wanted to become a veterinarian. Now 16, she is a few steps closer to making her career choice a reality. In December of last year Taurine co-founded Paws and Claws Pet Rescue club at Mayflower High School. She ran unopposed as the club treasurer and started out from the beginning to be the most active student in the club, which has roughly 50 members. She spearheaded several fund raising and donation drives to purchase food, cat litter, towels, toys, newspapers, and plastic bags to be used at the shelter. She has also spent her own money to buy leashes, canned food, and a variety of much-needed shelter items. The city does not have these items budgeted, so it is only through the efforts of volunteers like Taurine that the cats and dogs get luxuries that they would not otherwise have. Taurine has spent all summer working to help care for the animals at the city’s shelter. She’s cleaned out kennels, fed and bathed the animals, collected supplies and has even helped get the animals adopted to local families. She’s been covered head to toe in filth from taking care of the animals in the hot humid days of summer, and her smile never left her face, Ann Linton, an adult volunteer explained. “When she is around the animals, you always see that big grin, and you know she loves what she is doing.”
And she really does love what she’s doing. Amid all the hard work it is to help care for the homeless animals, Taurine said, “It makes me happy to come down here. I know there’s hope to find a home for every animal.”
Taurine Main is pictured above with one of the homeless animals at the Mayflower Animal Rescue. Taurine has spent her entire summer volunteering at the shelter and working to raise supplies for the animals there. To learn how you can help Taurine and the Paws and Claws Pet Rescue, visit http://tiny.cc/PawsAndClaws. The shelter is always looking for crates, food for cats and dogs, blankets, and tarps (items can be used). Monetary donations to Paws and Claws Pet Rescue may be sent to Paws and Claws c/o Tammy McElroy, faculty sponsor, Mayflower High School, 10 Lesley King Drive, Mayflower, AR 72106. Donations of food, leashes, toys, and other animal items may be dropped off at the Mayflower Police Station, 2 Ashmore Drive, Mayflower, AR. To volunteer for this group, e-mail MayflowerAnimalRescue@gmail.com

I had the opportunity to meet Taurine in person at the shelter. She was surprised that day with a drop-in visit from Randy Holland, Mayor of Mayflower. He recognized her hard work and dedication during a small ceremony in which he named the cat room in Taurine’s honor. Being the modest person she is, she gracefully said “thank you” and explained she hasn’t done all the work alone. In recent weeks, Taurine organized a community yard sale. Proceeds of the sale were collected for the club. Nearly $600 was raised. The money helped pay off the shelter’s vet bills. She’s planning to host another yard sale this fall. Taurine has been named a Mayflower “Outstanding Young Citizen” and is also the 2011 “Outstanding Young Citizen of the Year.” She said, “hard work gets good results.” Taurine encourages other young adults to get involved in their communities the same way she did. “Just go for it. You can make a difference. A little effort goes a long way.” When she graduates, Taurine hopes to pursue a career in veterinary science.

DAY TRIPPIN'
More than just fun outside of school.
By Emily Griffin
Each school year kids anxiously wait to hear when and where their field trips will be. Many kids consider field trips fun days outside of the classroom, and they are. Kids learn so much during these days, they just don’t realize it! Field trips come in many forms and fashions. From trips outside of town to exploring town hall, field trips present a way for teachers to approach 12 | savvy kids september 2011
knowledge in a completely new environment and for students to have fun while learning. The boredom of the classroom may lead some kids to lose interest in a particular subject. This is especially true of difficult subjects. New environments can provide challenges that allow for more individual learning, while classroom teaching is often generalized. During field trips,
kids have a chance to go the extra step and take in a ton of information. Kids will have the opportunity to put what they are studying in the classroom into effect. They will make the connection between bookwork and how it applies to real life. While most parents would do their best to introduce kids to the arts and cultural events, the truth is that, many times, lack of time, money or knowledge
prevents families from attending such events. Field trips are an excellent way for kids to be introduced to the arts and enjoy activities and sights that they may otherwise not be exposed to. For more on the subject of field trips, we called the experts. Voted best field trip winner and runners-up are the Little Rock Zoo, Clinton Presidential Center and Heifer Village.
Heifer Village
The Little Rock Zoo has been a favorite of youngsters for many years. No matter what age students are, everyone can appreciate the beauty and wonder at the Little Rock Zoo. Group discounts are available for field trips of 15 or more paying individuals for a total cost of $5 per person. Reservations are required. After you’ve made reservations, educators will receive an email or letter confirming the details of the visit. The Little Rock Zoo Education Department offers several on-site animal education programs. During the special animal programs, groups will get an up-close look at some of the animals, many of which are not on exhibit to the general public. The programs are always entertaining for children and adults alike and can be suited to the appropriate age group. Prior reservations are required and should be made within three weeks of your group visit.
The William J. Clinton Presidential Center wants to encourage schools to take advantage of their resources. School groups can take tours of the center for free and grants are available for transportation costs. “This is an institution of learning,” Rebecca Tennille, spokesperson for the center, said. “We really work hard to make sure the local schools have access to our exhibits.” Tennille explained that the center has grade-specific customized curriculum for teachers to use before the
field trip. These worksheets and information for use in the classroom will help educators prepare students for what they will learn during the tour. “We have worked hard to make sure exhibits offer potential learning experiences for the students. We really try hard to accommodate schools in any way possible, Tennille added. Currently, visitors can explore through 20,000 square feel of exhibit space located on two levels designed to teach, inspire, and make information accessible. The exhibits tell the store of the Clinton Presidency and provide a direct connection to history through photographs, video clips and countless artifacts. Temporary exhibits are available throughout the year. For more information on taking a field trip to the William J. Clinton Presidential Center, visit clintonpresidentialcenter.org. Heifer Village in downtown Little Rock introduces visitors to the possibility of a world free of hunger and poverty. The hands-on global education
facility is home to interactive exhibits that provide a stimulating and challenging educational experience for people of all ages. Heifer Village is a place for learning about solutions to global hunger and poverty. Their mission: to end hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth. Field trips to Heifer Village are offered for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Curriculum is available for educators and is customized for grade level. The field trips are free and include a tour of the exhibits and the Heifer International headquarters. Field trips can also be taken to the Heifer Ranch. These field trips include an educational video viewing, tour of the ranch on a hay wagon and hands-on activities in which students can interact with the animals. These field trips are available from full day ($5 per student) and up to 4-5 night stay (call for pricing). For more information on a field trip to the Heifer Village or Heifer Ranch, visit heifer.org
Little Rock Zoo
Food is available at Café Africa inside the Little Rock Zoo. Café Africa can provide pre-ordered sack lunches. Outside food can not be brought into the zoo to ensure the safety of the animals living there. Picnic areas are available outside the zoo’s entry plaza. GIFT to IDEAS TOY WITH
Ge ge t rea t s dy et… …
Holiday Shopping!
Start
It’s not always easy to predict what the holiday’s top toys will be. Below are a few toys online experts are predicting to be in high demand. Never heard of them? Ask your kids…they have!
Nerf N-Strike Stampede ECS
By Paige Hunter Parham Now that the kids are back in school and the temperature is finally cooling down, it’s time to think about the holiday season. With careful planning, your family can set aside a solid provision to prevent overspending or a last-minute scramble for gifts in December. The most important aspect of this planning is to know your limits. Set a concrete amount for each member of the family and resign yourself to staying within that budget. Now that you have a goal to work towards, the next step is accumulating that money. An easy way to set aside Christmas money is to open a separate savings account for just that purpose, although if you’re well organized and keep good records, this may not be necessary. Setting aside just $50 out of each paycheck from now until December will leave you with $400 to spend once December rolls around. Some banks offer a special “Christmas Club” account that will automatically transfer money from your regular account to a savings account to help with your holiday funds. Another simple way of not becoming 22 | savvy kids september 2011
bogged down with debt as well as avoiding the shopping rush is to start purchasing one or two gifts each time you get paid. The key when using this tactic is to find a good, secure hiding spot so your treasures won’t be accidentally discovered. Most kids are smart enough to get up into the linen closet, so try to use your imagination and think of some unusual spots. My mom always used the trunk of the car (at least until I discovered my brand-new Cabbage Patch doll while helping unload groceries!) I’ve started taking advantage of online shopping, and having the packages delivered to my office, where I know they will be safe until I can wrap them and sneak them into the house. If you’ve got a big gift in mind and would like some flexibility with paying for it, you might think about a layaway plan. Many department stores offer this option, requiring a small percentage of the cost to be paid up front, while you can slowly pay off the balance while the store holds onto your merchandise. (This is also a great way to keep presents away from prying eyes.) Layaways
are also a great way to avoid the rush of holiday shopping – allowing you to select and set aside gifts at your convenience. My final suggestion on how to keep your Christmas spending under control is to check for sales. Everyone knows about Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving, when almost every store has special deals on hot items) but did you also know that many of those prices are available online, as well? Save yourself the headache of fighting crowds and over-packed parking lots and do your shopping from the comfort of home. Many coupon websites preview Black Friday sales in the weeks prior to the event. The most important thing to keep in mind during the holidays is that the amount spent per person is not an indicator of the affection you feel for that person. The holidays are about family and togetherness, not a contest to see who accumulates the biggest pile of presents under the tree. With careful planning, however, it is possible to stretch your dollars to include a lot more holiday cheer!

Adam’s Game is geared toward toddlers and trust me, your toddler will love this app! Three pictures will appear on the screen and Adam, the app creator’s son, will ask your child to touch one of the pictures (example: Touch the banana.) If your child touches the correct picture the game cheers and if they touch the wrong picture the game says “Uh-Oh” and the correct picture flashes on the screen as a hint. After several turns, the game rewards your child with music and a group of objects floating across the screen. The game even allows you to add your own photos into the mix and record your own voice. Party Chicken
By Emily Griffin • Recipe courtesy of Heather Baker
With all the running around families do these days it’s easy to forget the importance of a wellbalanced meal for your family. Party Chicken, is a staple in the Baker household and has been for years. It’s very easy too! Since you get it
ready the night before, there’s little to no prep time the night you decide to feast on this yummy dish. Put it in the oven at 4 p.m. on your way to soccer practice and return home to a deliciously aroma filled kitchen and dinner ready to eat.
What you will need: 1 4 oz. jar of dried beef 2 10 1/2 oz. cans cream of mushroom soup 4 whole boned chicken breasts 8 slices of bacon (optional) 1 cup of sour cream 1 can cream of chicken soup Directions: Separate beef and place in the bottom of an 8-inch square casserole dish sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Wrap bacon around chicken or, if you’re not using bacon, lay the chicken on the beef. Mix soup and sour cream, then pour over the chicken. Refrigerate overnight. Bake at 350 degrees for two hours. Serves four, but you can double the recipe for a group of six or more. Chef ’s Note: Cut calories in this recipe by using fat-free sour cream, omitting bacon, and mixing low-sodium varieties of the soup.

Always consider serving green vegetables with your family’s meals. Vegetables are packed with micronutrients necessary to maintain a good, healthy diet for growing kids. Offer vegetables at every meal. Even if your kids won’t eat a full serving each sitting, by letting them become more familiar with the green stuff they will eventually try them, and, in most cases, learn to really like them. You should never force your children to eat any type of food as this could create unhealthy food choices later in life— encouragement is key. Plus, kids learn a great many things by watching their parents, so be sure to set a good example and eat your veggies without complaints. Below are a few simple side dish ideas for your family. The easiest way to prepare vegetables in a hurry is by taking advantage of the microwavable steam bags available in your grocer’s freezer. Many varieties are available and some even come complete with a light sauce to add flavor. Ziploc also makes steam bags called “Zip ‘n Steam” that allow you to choose your own veggies, throw them in the bag and quickly steam them in your microwave. A favorite in my family is baked asparagus. Simply cut the ends of fresh asparagus and lay the stalks flat on a cookie sheet. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes. Once they are done, remove them from your oven and sprinkle with grated parmesan cheese. A simple side salad could also do the trick. Mix in fresh spinach leaves with romaine or iceberg lettuce and let your kids pick the veggies, beans, nuts and seeds to add in. Have a variety of dressings on hand as well. By letting your kids have a say in what goes in the salad they will be more willing to try it.

Take By The Horns By Emily Griffin
Since school started, 8-year-old Michael’s mom would put his lunch money in the front pocket of his backpack. She didn’t know he was asking his dad for lunch money too. Michael would come home from school extremely hungry every day. Michael’s mom and dad started to worry. Once they realized he was collecting lunch money from both of them, they confronted Michael and asked why, if he was eating two lunches, was he so hungry when he came home. Tears filled Michael’s eyes and he explained there was an older kid who 30 | savvy kids september 2011
was threatening to beat him up if he didn’t pay. It’s a sad fact that Michael’s story is similar to so many across the country. As parents we feel helpless. Knowing some facts about bullying and ways to overcome bullying can help your child learn to handle bullying on the playground and throughout life. One these pages you will find research and information collected about bullying from the Department of Health and Human Services.
What is
Have you Seen
Bullying is aggressive behavior that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power or strength. Typically, it is repeated over time. A child who is being bullied has a hard time defending himself or herself.
You can help stop the bullying. Next time you see someone being bullied, try one (or more) of these ideas: If it is safe, speak up. Say something like, “Stop it!” Tell an adult. Kids who are being bullied are sometimes scared to tell an adult. That is where you come in--tell an adult who you trust, like your teacher or coach. You can tell them in person or leave them a note. Be a friend to the person who is being bullied. You can still help the kid who is being bullied: Talk with them. Sit with them at lunch. Play with them at recess. Set a good example. Do not bully others.
Bullying can take many forms, such as hitting or punching (physical bullying); teasing or name-calling (verbal bullying); intimidation using gestures or social exclusion (nonverbal bullying or emotional bullying); and sending insulting messages by e-mail, text, or through social media (cyberbullying).
If you’re being Speak up against bullying. Say something like, “stop it.” Walk away. Act like you do not care, even if you really do. Tell an adult you trust. They may have ideas about what you can do. Stick together. Staying with a group might help. Talk to an adult you trust. They might be able to help you with your problem.
Has Someone Called You a Think about what you are doing. If someone did the same thing to you, would you be hurt? Remember that making others feel bad is wrong. Know that everyone is different, but different does not mean better or worse. Try getting to know others who are not like you. You may find out, you are more alike than you think. Talk to an adult you trust. They may have good ideas about what you can do to stop the bullying.
Hurts themselves Are very hungry after school from not eating their lunch Runs away from home Loses interest in visiting or talking with friends Is afraid of going to school or other activities with peers Loses interest in school work or begins to do poorly in school Appears sad, moody, angry, anxious or depressed when they come home Talks about suicide Feels helpless Often feels like they are not good enough Blames themselves for their problems Suddenly has fewer friends Avoids certain places Acts differently than usual

Recognizing the There are many warning signs that could indicate that someone is involved in bullying, either by bullying others or by being bullied. If your child shows any of these signs, this does not necessarily mean that he or she is being bullied, but it is a possibility worth exploring. What should you do? Talk with your child and talk with staff at school to learn more.

All parents want to give their children as many opportunities as possible, and for a lot of families that includes loading up on after-school activities such as dance, music lessons, or athletic program. It is important, however, to find a balance so that children don’t become overtired. While activities are a great way to encourage socialization, exercise, and skill building, it is very easy to over schedule. I would like to familiarize you with some signs of stress in children and to discuss how to prevent this type of burnout, for the sake of your kids and your own sanity. A lot of parents accept temper tantrums, eating difficulties and trouble sleeping as normal aspects of childhood development, but the truth is these can all signal a problem. Young kids do not always have the vocabulary to tell us when they are not feeling well, and their behavior is often a more reliable indicator of how they’re feeling than their words are. Consider a toddler who is so tired she keeps rubbing her eyes and yawning while insisting that she doesn’t need a nap. An effective parent learns to recognize the signs of exhaustion and knows how to deal with this situation – and the same type of strategy will become important as that toddler becomes older and more involved in activities outside of the home. Children today are involved in learning or recreational activities from pretty much the time they arrive at school until they climb into bed at night. What seems to parents to be an ever-expanding world of opportunities can seem like a burden to a child who is dragged from one lesson to the next. Our kids don’t have the leisure time that we once did – time to lay on the couch and watch cartoons, to relax in their room with a good book, or to chase the neighbor kids around their yards. Along with the implementation of after school programs for music, art, sports, and tutoring has come a drastic increase in stress-related disorders in children. Kids become anxious that they cannot live up to familial expectations, and they worry about being the best at their chosen activity. Stress manifests in children in a variety of ways: respiratory issues such as asthma are common in overworked children, as are irritability, insomnia and changes in appetite. Any combination of these symptoms should be discussed with your pediatrician to evaluate the amount of stress in your child’s life and to help find ways of reducing it.

Common causes of childhood stress are pressure to achieve, social issues like fitting in or being bullied, family problems, the influence of the media (scary television shows and movies, as well as the news, can all place unnecessary worry on a child,) and living up to parental expectations. In addition, if one or more of the child’s parents are under stress, it can be felt by the entire family. Children are naturally in-tune with their parents’ emotions, and if mom or dad are having a hard time coping with the pressure of work and taking care of the family, children will feel that stress and react accordingly. To be an effective parent, it is important to make sure your emotional needs are met. Counseling, exercise or meditation could help to distress the entire family. So what do you do if you find that your child is experiencing a lot of anxiety or tension? First, you should talk to him and try to figure out what the source of the stress is. If it’s something as simple as being too overscheduled, there may be an easy fix in removing one or more of the child’s activities and allowing him some unstructured time in the afternoons or evenings to unwind. The problem could be that there is a lack of physical activity in his life – in which case the solution would be to get that kid moving. Perhaps the family could take walks around the neighborhood in the evening, or join a local fitness center together. One thing is certain – all families can benefit from spending more time together. It’s a good idea to plan a regular family evening in which everyone can sit around the table, share a meal, and perhaps play a game or two. Not only will this allow you to get to know one another better, it will provide a great way for the whole family to relax together.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month, and we at Savvy Kids would like to take some time to recognize the special children and families who are dealing with this issue. No one expects a young child or adolescent to receive a diagnosis of cancer, yet it is not uncommon. Almost 11,000 kids under age 15 are diagnosed with some form of cancer every year, and cancer is the number one non-accidental cause of death in children. It can be extremely frightening to be told that your child has cancer, but the good news is that the survival rate for pediatric cancer is in the 75-80% range. Here in Central Arkansas, we are lucky to have the services of Arkansas Children’s Hospital, which is home to a fantastic Hematology/Oncology Clinic as well as the Arkansas Pediatric NeuroOncology Clinic. What causes childhood cancer? Unlike adult cancers, which are frequently caused by poor lifestyle choices such as smoking, sun tanning, alcohol abuse and toxic exposure, the causes of most pediatric cancers is unknown. Studies have been done which have linked occurrences of childhood cancers to parents smoking, drinking, or eating poorly prior to the child’s conception – but there are no surefire plans of action or vaccinations to prevent this illness from occurring in families. There are no warning signs for cancer; usually a patient is diagnosed after normal methods of treating symptoms fail and extensive tests are run. Thanks to advances in modern medicine, childhood cancers are being caught and treated much more quickly than they have been in the past, which improves the outlook for the majority of cases. Common types of cancers which occur in children are leukemia – a cancer of the bone marrow or blood cells, tumors and melanoma, more commonly known as skin cancer. Symptoms that frequently indicate to doctors that there may be a problem are frequent infections, anemia, swollen glands, bruising and unexplained fevers. There is often a lag in diagnosing cancer in children, however, because these same symptoms indicate a myriad of childhood illnesses. Once a diagnosis of cancer is made, your family should consult with a pediatric oncologist as soon as possible. Your pediatrician will probably be able to refer you to someone who he or she has worked with before and is well-versed in dealing with pediatric cancers. It can be extremely frightening to get a diagnosis like this, but it’s important to be aware that there are a lot of options for successfully treating these illnesses. As with adult cancers, the most common therapies
to treat pediatric cancers are: chemotherapy (the use of medical drugs to kill cancerous cells), radiation (which uses high-energy particles to kill cancer cells), and surgery (in which the tumors or cells are removed from the body surgically.) The most common childhood cancer, leukemia, requires chemotherapy or radiation therapy because instead of being concentrated in one specific area, leukemia affects the whole body through the bloodstream. Tumors can usually be treated via surgical procedures and radiation. Many of the available cancer therapies will weaken a child’s body and make them susceptible to infections, so it’s very important that a proper healing environment be established. Dealing with a cancer diagnosis is an extremely scary prospect, but there are resources available to help guide you and your family through this rough time. For children younger than 4, an understanding of what cancer is and how it is affecting their bodies will most likely be unnecessary. Usually in these cases, simply telling the child that he or she is “sick” and will need “medicine” to feel better is sufficient. However, as kids become more social, they’re likely to have an increased awareness of what cancer is and will need additional resources to deal with the fear, confusion, and frustration of treatments. Social workers, school counselors, psychologists and medical doctors accustomed to working with pediatric cancer patients will all be valuable resources to help an older child or adolescent to understand their diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. It is very important to get these types of providers on board as soon as a diagnosis is made; the goal in helping kids to deal with cancer is to replace fear and misunderstanding with compassion and information. In addition, counselors can help the child with non-medical approaches to cancer treatment, which include visualization, meditation, and relaxation techniques. Diagnosing and treating pediatric cancer takes time, money, and an emotional toll on the entire family. While no one likes to think about cancer and its related treatments, the fact is that thousands of families receive new pediatric cancer diagnoses every year. It’s important to remember, however, that over 70% of children diagnosed with cancer will survive to adulthood. With proper support, this can be a huge but no insurmountable issue to tackle.
It can be extremely frightening to be told that your child has cancer, but the good news is that the survival rate for pediatric cancer is in the 75-80% range.
Wanna Fight? So now that you know more about pediatric cancer, what can you do to help make things easier for these children and their families? The American Childhood Cancer Organization of Arkansas, formerly the Candlelighters of Central Arkansas, is a Better Business Bureau approved charity which provides emotional, educational, social and practical assistance to children with cancer and their families. The ACCO is the only organization in Arkansas which is exclusively devoted to serving childhood cancer patients and their families. In addition to promoting awareness of childhood cancer, they also support and work with survivors of pediatric cancer, provide support to grieving families of children who’ve lost the fight with childhood cancers, and they are the only organization which helps with funeral costs for these children. The ACCO provides emergency financial assistance to struggling families, hospital and home visits to affected children, and new diagnosis bags which contain essential information and resources to promote education and ease the initial shock of a cancer diagnosis. On September 23, The American Childhood Cancer Organization of Arkansas and Ginger Beebe are hosting the “Gallery of Hope” benefit at the Governor’s Mansion. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit www.acco.org/arkansas. Other Ways to help: • Donate knitted or crocheted hats to Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s “Knitting for Noggins” program. Hats are being collected from September 2011 – March 2012. There is a donor form at http:// www.archildrens.org/documents/K4N_ Brochure2011.pdf, which will need to be printed and mailed with your donations. • Monetary donations to accredited charities to provide support to affected families • Volunteer at a children’s hospital or clinic • Promote awareness by wearing gold in September for Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month september 2011 savvy kids

Is the
Flua Good Vacci n e Idea for Your Family? The flu season is from November to April, with most cases occurring between late December and early March, but the vaccine is usually offered between September and mid-November (and may be given at other times of the year). Getting the shot before the flu season is in full force gives the body a chance to build up immunity to, or protection from, the virus. Although you can get a flu shot well into flu season, it’s best to try to get it earlier rather than later. However, even when there are only 2 or 3 months left in the flu season, it’s still a good idea to get protection if the vaccine is available in your area. In times when the vaccine is in short supply, certain people need it more than others. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) often will recommend that certain high-risk groups be given priority 40 | savvy kids september 2011
when flu shot supplies are limited. Call your doctor or local public health department about vaccine availability in your area. A non-shot option, the nasal mist vaccine, is now available, but because it contains weakened live flu viruses it is not for people with weakened immune systems or certain health conditions. The nasal mist vaccine is only for healthy, non-pregnant people between the ages of 2 and 49 years. Check with your doctor to see if your child can — or should — get this type of flu vaccine.
Who Should Get the Flu Shot? Federal health officials now urge flu vaccination for all kids 6 months of age and older (instead of just the youngest, as before). Although young tots (from 6 months to 5 years old) are still considered the group of kids who need the flu vaccine the most, updated
guidelines from the CDC now recommend that all older kids and teens get it, too (as long as enough is available).
Other high-risk kids who should get the flu vaccine include those who: • were born prematurely and are at increased risk of developing lung problems if they get influenza • have chronic heart or lung disorders, including asthma • have chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, severe anemia, or immune deficiency (including HIV/AIDS and immunosuppression caused by drugs) • are on long-term aspirin therapy and may be at risk for Reye syndrome if they catch the flu • live with someone in any of the high-risk groups above • High-risk adults who should get the flu vaccine include:
• those who have chronic lung or heart disorders • those who have chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, severe anemia, or immune deficiency (including HIV/AIDS and immunosuppression caused by drugs) • pregnant women • residents of nursing homes and other facilities that care for people with chronic medical conditions • health care workers and other employees of hospitals, nursing homes, and chronic care and other outpatient facilities who care for patients • police, firefighters, and other public safety workers • those planning to travel to the tropics at any time or to the Southern Hemisphere from April through September who did not receive a flu vaccine the previous year • everyone 50 years of age or older • out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of anyone in any of the high-risk groups. If you want to get the flu shot and aren’t in the high-risk groups listed above, talk to your doctor about vaccine availability.
People who should not get a flu shot include: • anyone who’s severely allergic to eggs and egg products (ingredients for flu shots are grown inside eggs, so tell your doctor if your child is allergic to eggs or egg products before he or she gets a flu shot) • infants under 6 months old • anyone who’s ever had a severe reaction to a flu vaccination (although most people do not experience any side effects from the flu shot) • anyone with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare condition that affects the immune system and nerves • anyone with a fever Kids under 9 who get a flu shot for the first time will receive two separate shots a month apart. It can take about 1 or 2 weeks after the shot for the body to build up protection to the flu.
How the Flu Vaccine Works Flu vaccines are available as a shot or nasal mist. Given as an injection, the flu shot contains killed flu viruses that will not cause the flu, but will prepare the body to fight off infection by the live flu virus. Getting a shot of the killed virus means a person is protected against that particular type of live flu virus if he or she comes into contact with it. The nasal mist vaccine contains weakened live flu viruses. Because it contains live viruses, the mist is not for people with weakened immune systems or certain health conditions. Even if you or your child may have gotten the vaccine last year, that won’t protect you from getting the flu this year because the protection wears off and flu viruses constantly change. That’s why the vaccine is updated each year to include the most current strains of the virus. The flu vaccine reduces the average person’s chances of catching the flu by up to 80% during the season. Because the vaccine prevents infection with only a few of the viruses that can cause flu-like symptoms, it isn’t a guarantee against getting sick. But even if someone who’s gotten the shot gets the flu, symptoms usually will be fewer and milder.
after getting the flu shot, put a warm compress on the injection site to ease soreness or swelling, and give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for headache or low-grade fever. Do not give your child aspirin unless your doctor instructs you to do so. A common myth about the flu shot is that it can actually cause the flu. But the flu shot used in the United States is made from killed influenza viruses, which means that it’s impossible to catch the flu by receiving it. However, because the nasal spray flu vaccine is made from live viruses, it may cause mild flu-like symptoms, including runny nose, headache, vomiting, muscle aches, and fever.
Where Can My Family Get Flu Shots? Flu shots are available at: • many health care settings, including doctors’ offices and public, employee, and university health clinics • some pharmacies • some supermarkets • some community groups
will pay for shots only if they’re given through their plan. Flu shots are covered by Medicare for senior citizens and are generally covered by insurance for people in other high-risk groups. Otherwise, flu shots may cost anywhere from $10 to $50. If you opt for the nasal mist flu vaccine, check to see if your insurance plan covers it.
Other Preventive Measures There’s no guaranteed way — including being vaccinated — to prevent anyone from getting the flu. But precautions that can help protect you and your family include: • avoiding large crowds whenever possible • practicing good hand washing • never picking up used tissues • never sharing cups and eating utensils • staying home from work or school when someone is sick with the flu • covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze © 1995-2011 . The Nemours Foundation/KidsHealth®. Reprinted with permission.
If you have an HMO insurance plan, be sure to check with your primary care doctor before having your kids vaccinated outside the office, since most HMOs
Side Effects Again, most people do not experience any side effects from the flu shot. According to the CDC, the flu shot rarely causes serious harm. Some of those vaccinated may have soreness or swelling at the site of the injection or mild side effects, such as headache or low-grade fever. Although these side effects may last for a day, the flu can knock you off your feet for 2 to 3 weeks and can cause complications such as pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, and other respiratory problems. Book of the Month Recommended by the William F. Laman Public Library
Sideways Stories from Wayside School Written by Louis Sachar Illustrated by Julie Brinckloe The Wayside School was supposed to be one story high, with 30 classrooms side by side; instead, it was built sideways, with 30 oneclassroom stories. As befits such a strange school, these tales are a bit strange too. In one, Jason is stuck to his seat by a large wad of chewing gum. His teacher tries throwing ice water on him (to chill the gum to brittleness) and turning him upside down. She even contemplates cutting his pants off. Finally, though, he falls from his upside-down position when kissed (ugh!) by one of the girls in the class. Other tales include a bit of a moral, such as the story of Kathy, whose assumption that no one will ever like her is proved right, or the story of Bebe, who draws quickly but without artistic merit. The quirky humor in this book is appealing to children, and it makes a good read-aloud book for the younger set. (Ages 5 to 12)

First day of school! Whether they would like to admit it or not, kids across the state were excited to be heading back to school in August! Getting new school supplies, picking out their clothes for the first day, packing their lunch and going to bed early (even though it was hard to sleep)—there were so many fun things to do in preparation! Bright and early the youngsters awoke to breakfast, parents holding back tears, and, of course, cameras! On this page are just a few of the many “First Day of School” photos Savvy Kids received.

Little did Joel Smith know
that his family trip to the movie theater would end up with him saving “Gotham City” from Joker and Catwoman. Joel Smith, age five, has a life-threatening illness and all the challenges that go with his medical condition. His wish? To be Batman for a day.
Batman saves Gotham City!
Photos by Patrick jones
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-South and the Central Arkansas Wish Council granted his wish recently. When Joel and his family arrived at the Lakewood 8 Movie Theater, he heard a page come over the loud speakers that Batman had an emergency phone call. He was handed the phone and Gotham City’s mayor was on the other end, pleading for Batman hurry over to Gotham City Bank and rescue the hostages from Joker and Catwoman and stop them from robbing the bank. He quickly hopped into the Batmobile and rode to the scene of the crime. He walked in and untied the security guards and captured the villains before they could wreak any more havoc. Batman handcuffed the two and loaded them into the police car then freed the hostages. Back at the jail, Batman gave a press conference giving a playby-play to reporters. He was then given a medal of honor for his bravery and service to the community. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-South and the Central Arkansas Wish Council had refreshments and many gifts waiting for him and his family after the press conference. What an exciting way for Joel to forget his illness for the day! Unfortunately, Joel lost his battle with cancer on August 16th. In our eyes he was a superhero!

SAVVY PROJECT
Homemade crayons By Paige Hunter Parham
(With help from Cassidy Kreulen and Hailey Perry)
Most families have a box of old, broken crayons lying around somewhere. Does this sound familiar? I have a perfect way to turn that box of blah into something new and fun – make your own crayons! This simple craft will keep little hands busy and provide a new way to create art. They also make really cute party favors or small gifts!
What you will need: For this project, you will need peeled crayons broken into pieces less than an inch long and a silicon baking pan. There are all kinds of fun shapes of pans that you can use to create seasonal crayons, as well as the standard squares, circles and hearts. Silicon is preferable to metal in this instance because it distributes heat evenly and will not burn the wax. Directions: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. While it’s warming up, have your child place the crayons into the baking molds in any way they choose. When they’re ready, place the baking pan into the oven and watch them carefully. It takes about 10 minutes for the wax to melt completely, and you don’t want to cook them for so long that the colors all run together. Remove pans from oven carefully and allow to cool at room temperature or in the refrigerator. When they are solid, you’re ready to create!
