Elvis at 21, Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer, an exhibition developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, Govinda Gallery, and the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, is sponsored nationally by HISTORY™.

Elvis June 4 – September 11, 2011 “Elvis” is an original separate exhibition that was inspired by President Clinton’s own fascination with the birth of rock ‘n’ roll and the man behind the music revolution. In partnership with Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, items will include memorabilia from some of Elvis’ most popular movies, such as Elvis’ red MG in Blue Hawaii.

Nathan Sawaya’s The Art of the Brick® Oct. 1, 2011 – Feb. 12, 2012 Dubbed the Picasso of LEGO® bricks, lawyer-turned-artist Nathan Sawaya creates artistic masterpieces from the beloved toy.

owntown is known for its hot nightspots, live music and Farmers’ Market, cultural venues and commerce. You’ll find the William J. Clinton Presidential Center, Heifer Village, Arkansas Arts Center, Historic Arkansas Museum and Old State House—just to name a few of the must-see attractions downtown. The River Market area offers a multitude of dining options and nightly entertainment venues. Most of the activities in the River Market are within walking distance from downtown hotels, so put on your walking shoes and go for a stroll.

DOWNTOWN ATTRACTIONS ARKANSAS ARTS CENTER Whether hoping for a glimpse of the classics, cuttingedge or points in-between, art lovers will find plenty to appreciate at the Arkansas Arts Center, the state’s largest cultural institution with more than a dozen galleries to browse. The Arts Center offers visitors traveling exhibits as well as exhibits from their own growing collection — from American, Renaissance and European artists to the modern works. Among the most recognizable works in the collection are the drawings of Cézanne, Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock, Georgia O’Keeffe, Rembrandt and Rubens. In addition to its impressive collection, it houses a number of other cultural venues. Its Children’s Theatre

is a professional theater company presenting children’s classics September through May. Its history and the home

are as interesting as its exhibits. The gallery provides a place for children, artists, creative and community groups to display their work. The bronze front entrance doors, which were purchased at Tiffany’s, are 10 feet tall and four inches thick. An upward view from beneath its breathtaking rotunda can weaken the knees. The Capitol’s halls are lined with some of Arkansas’s favorite politicians and its changing displays are devoted to Arkansas history. 500 Woodlane (between Markham and Seventh streets). Not quite satisfied, CALS decided to partner with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) and rehab a couple of old buildings on President Clinton Avenue. These buildings now make up the Arkansas Studies Institute, which is dedicated to the study of Arkansas, houses about 10 million artifacts, including UALR archives, the papers of Arkansas governors Dale Bumpers, Winthrop Rockefeller, Jim Guy Tucker and Frank White

CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE While called the “Central High Crisis” by the world in 1957, Little Rock also became known as the city where the federal government took a stand against segregation. As a way to mark and learn from this period in history, the Central High School National Historic Site Visitor Center offers its guests a historic look at the events surrounding the Central High Crisis. 2120 Daisy L. Explore the 20,000-square-feet of museum exhibit space, including a 110-foot-long timeline detailing the history of President Clinton and his administration. Enjoy a power trip while standing in the full-scale replica of the Oval Office, or play the role of a cabinet member by using interactive media stations in a replica of the Cabinet Room.

The upstairs alcoves contain displays about life in the White House, including personal artifacts from the former First Family. Surrounded by a 30-acre city park, the building’s design symbolizes President Clinton’s theme of “Building a Bridge to the 21st Century.” In addition, the center houses the largest archival collection in American Presidential history as well as educational, research, and reception facilities. 1200 President Clinton Ave. Hours: MondaySaturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sunday 1–5 p.m. Closed New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Heifer Village is part museum, discovery center and classroom, and is designed to inspire. Its interactive exhibits are unique and focus on the serious subject of ending hunger and poverty. Like Heifer International’s headquarters next door, Heifer Village is an example of responsible construction practices and is definitely worth a look. In fact, Heifer’s headquarters has garnered a number of national awards for its green building. The newest updates include the 1830s Plum Bayou Log House site and a River Rail stop on Second Street, making it easier for visitors to access the city’s frontier past. The museum’s permanent and traveling exhibits are showcased in its five galleries, including Gallery II, Trinity Gallery, Horace C. Cabe, Study and Knife galleries. A sixth exhibit hall, the Sturgis Children’s Gallery offers interactive fun for the young and young-at-heart. The museum’s five pre-Civil War buildings,

including the 1826 Hinderliter Grog Shop, offers visitors a unique way to learn about the early history of the state. 200 E. Douglas MacArthur, the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History was created to honor the state’s military heritage through exhibits featuring artifacts, photographs, weapons, documents, uniforms and other items. The museum is located in the city’s oldest surviving neighborhood, and the original Tower Building—where Douglas MacArthur was born Jan. 26, 1880—is the centerpiece of the 36-acre MacArthur Park where the museum is located. The Old State House Museum is the oldest surviving state capitol west of the Mississippi River. America’s headquarters burned to the ground. Stunned motorists mourned the loss as they drove into downtown Little Rock the morning after the fire. But like the legendary Phoenix rising from the ashes, a new building was built in its place and was dedicated as the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, a state-funded museum dedicated to the Templars and the state’s black history. MOUNT HOLLY CEMETERY This cemetery is the final resting-place of some of the state’s most prominent people and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Some of the cemetery’s residents include Pulitzer Prize-winning poet John Gould Fletcher and executed Confederate spy David O. PULASKI COUNTY COURTHOUSE This municipal building was built in 1889 by Max A. Orlopp and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. MUSEUM OF DISCOVERY Dedicated to exploring the sciences, social sciences and technology, the Museum of Discovery is as entertaining as it is educational. Interactive exhibits cover a wide range of topics such as energy, insects or a look at other cultures, as well as providing kids with hands-on experiences with exhibits that allow them to create their own crafts. rgenta is the name of North Little Rock’s historic downtown, positioned just across the bridge from the River Market District on the north shore of the Arkansas River. The area was first platted in 1866, with its name recognizing the importance of the silver mines discovered north of town. Now, it’s one of central Arkansas’s fastest growing spots. Dickey-Stephens Park—home of the Arkansas Travelers baseball team— Verizon Arena, Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame and the U.S.S. Razorback submarine can all be found in Argenta. The area has its own market and deli and is home to several great restaurants. There are art galleries and even a bead shop on Main Street. Make sure you take a sunset cruise on the Arkansas Queen and then hop aboard the River Rail Trolley for a sightseeing tour of the historic area. idtown links downtown with west Little Rock, while sporting its own unique brand of Southern hospitality. But don’t let that fool you, Midtown is home to a number of nationally-recognized and award-winning medical centers, including the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, St. Vincent and Baptist Hospital. Midtown is also home to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. While residents work hard, they love to play hard, too. It’s not unusual to hear the echo of a hog call at War Memorial Stadium or the ping of a golf ball being driven off the tee at War Memorial Golf Course. The big news on the block is that the Little Rock Zoo recently welcomed a flock of penguins to its exotic animal family, and it won’t be long before the Central Arkansas Library System opens a new children’s branch in Midtown. MIDTOWN ATTRACTIONS LITTLE ROCK ZOO No trip to Midtown would be complete without a stop at the Little Rock Zoo, and there is now more to love with the recent opening of the Laura P. Nichols Penguin Pointe African Penguin Exhibit. More than 80 years old, the zoo continues to grow its animal family and add new exhibits. A good example of one of their innovative exhibits is the recently established African Veldt that is home to several species, including zebra, kudu and ostrich. Currently, the 33-acre zoo is home to more than 200 different animal species, with more than 700 animals calling it home. Also, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoo is home to the fully-restored, antique “Over the Jumps Carousel” — the only fully-operational carousel of it’s kind in the country. Both young and old will enjoy taking a ride down memory lane.

This neighborhood is one of the city’s first and is home to picturesque treelined streets and elegant homes. rom downtown Little Rock to the far reaches of the city, Cantrell Road, which starts out as LaHarp Boulevard at the River Market before morphing into Cantrell Road, is well known. This scenic road winds past the Arkansas River, then through Riverdale and the Heights before arriving in west Little Rock. Once it crosses 1-430, Cantrell Road is sometimes referred to as Highway 10.

Exhibits feature the National Guard’s involvement in every American conflict from the War with Mexico to the Gulf War (except the Vietnam War) and the use of Camp Robinson as an Army training facility in various conflicts. The museum site, Lloyd England Hall, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located at Camp Robinson. Sixth and Missouri streets, building 6400.
