Clinton Presidential Center and Park 16 years and $2.2 million (now valued at $320 million) to complete, and the price and effort were well worth it. The bronze front entrance doors, which were purchased at Tiffany’s, are 10 feet tall and four inches thick. An upward view from beneath its breathtaking rotunda can weaken the knees. Not quite satisfied, CALS decided to partner with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) and rehab a couple of old buildings on President Clinton Avenue. These buildings now make up the Arkansas Studies Institute, which is dedicated to the study of Arkansas, houses about 10 million artifacts, including UALR archives, the papers of Arkansas governors Dale Bumpers, Winthrop Rockefeller, Jim Guy Tucker and Frank White

The upstairs alcoves contain displays about life in the White House, including personal artifacts from the former First Family. A
rgenta is the name of North Little Rock’s historic downtown, positioned just across the bridge from the River Market District on the north shore of the Arkansas River. The area was first platted in 1866, with its name recognizing the importance of the silver mines discovered north of town. Now, it’s one of central Arkansas’s fastest growing spots. Dickey-Stephens Park—home of the Arkansas Travelers baseball team— Verizon Arena, Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame and the U.S.S. Razorback submarine can all be found in Argenta. The area has its own market and deli and is home to several great restaurants. There are art galleries and even a bead shop on Main Street. Make sure you take a sunset cruise on the Arkansas Queen and then hop aboard the River Rail Trolley for a sightseeing tour of the historic area. Here are some of the attractions Argenta has to offer. 26

MIDTOWN M
idtown links downtown with west Little Rock, while sporting its own unique brand of Southern hospitality. But don’t let that fool you, Midtown is home to a number of nationally-recognized and award-winning medical centers, including the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, St. Vincent and Baptist Hospital. Midtown is also home to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. While residents work hard, they love to play hard, too. It’s not unusual to hear the echo of a hog call at War Memorial Stadium or the ping of a golf ball being driven off the tee at War Memorial Golf Course. The big news on the block is that the Little Rock Zoo recently welcomed a flock of penguins to its exotic animal family, and it won’t be long before the Central Arkansas Library System opens a new children’s branch in Midtown. Here are a few of the area’s attractions.

MIDTOWN ATTRACTIONS LITTLE ROCK ZOO No trip to Midtown would be complete without a stop at the Little Rock Zoo, and there is now more to love with the recent opening of the Laura P. Nichols Penguin Pointe African Penguin Exhibit. More than 80 years old, the zoo continues to grow its animal family and add new exhibits. A good example of one of their innovative exhibits is the recently established African Veldt that is home to several species, including zebra, kudu and ostrich. Currently, the 33-acre zoo is home to more than 200 different animal species, with more than 700 animals calling it home. Also, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoo is home to the fully-restored, antique “Over the Jumps Carousel” — the only fully-operational carousel of it’s kind in the country. Both young and old will enjoy taking a ride down memory lane.
Cool cats live at the Little Rock Zoo.

ophisticated, cool and definitely, oh so chic, the Heights area begins at the top of Cantrell hill just a short distance from downtown. This neighborhood is one of the city’s first and is home to picturesque treelined streets and elegant homes. Shoppers can find a wide range of stores, from fine apparel and jewelry to the oldest florist in town. There’s a spa, a store for runners, a toy store and some of the city’s best fine art retailers. Bring your appetite with you because the Heights offers several culinary delights, ranging from fresh Chinese cuisine to sushi, seafood, Tex-Mex favorites, pasta, hand-tossed pizzas and gelato. If you’re looking for something sweet, the area has its own cupcake shop, along with a premium ice cream store and an all-natural yogurt chain offering fresh fruit parfaits and probiotic smoothies. No visit to the Heights would be complete without a leisurely stroll along the neighborhood’s promenade on Kavanaugh Boulevard. It’s a great place to take Fido for a stroll. 50

This Florida-based chain offers the deep-sea version of the Outback experience in a dressier setting with a convivial bar. A half-dozen or more types of fresh fish filets are offered daily, grilled (perfectly in our experience) over a wood fire. Several sauces are available, but the fish is good enough on its own. Shrimp, mussels and scallops star on the appetizer list and there’s plenty of meat and chicken for those who resist seafood. A slice of key lime pie is the perfect sweet/tart finish. 11525 Cantrell Rd. 228-0356 BUFFALO WILD WINGS A sports bar on steroids with numerous big screen TVs and a menu full of thirst-inducing items. The wings, which can be slathered with one of 14 sauces, are the star attraction and can become addictive. 14800 Cantrell Rd. 868-5279 CAPERS It’s never been better, with as good a wine list as any in the area, and a menu that covers a lot of ground—seafood, steaks, pasta—and does it all well. 14502 Cantrell Rd. 868-7600 CAPI’S Nuevo Latino Cuisine featuring tasty tamales, enchiladas and Central American inspired entrées. rom unique and trendy mom-and-pop shops to the biggest big-box, mini malls, life-style centers and all forms in-between, west Little Rock can best be described as the state’s “Shopper’s Paradise.” No trip to the city is complete without devoting a day or two to this section of the city. In addition to shopping and movies, there’s golfing, biking and hiking, just to name a few outdoor activities. After a full day, west Little Rock’s lineup of restaurants is second to none, from 1950s-style burgers and award-winning barbeque to exquisitely prepared steaks, seafood, Asian and more. When you walk into The Flying Fish restaurant you are struck by the laidback, rustic atmosphere, much like you’d find at a lakefront fish restaurant. Casual, family dining is the order of the day. The menu reflects a decidedly health-conscious approach: fresh grilled seafood, chicken and vegetables. Cornmeal is substituted for traditional batter for frying and only transfat-free peanut oil is used. Catfish and shrimp are the house specialties at The Flying Fish.
