The middle years of Yangui: A blessing in disguise After a car crash 11 years ago, Yangui was no longer able to perform hard labor, so she turned to painting as a form of rehabilitation, and also as a way to cheer herself up. That is also why Yangui’s creativity has flowed ever since, creating a large number of pieces. Her paintings include beautiful scenery from her memories, traditional Tsou legends, elders in the tribe, and recently themes concerning the environment. Her carefree strokes and natural, easygoing demeanor are both refreshingly stunning. After the devastation flooding of Typhoon Morakot in 2009, Yangui’s work began depicting imagery connected to disasters. A tribe trapped in a mudslide, the world rolling, and terrified faces reflect the fear that Yangui experienced.
