certiďŹ ed dishwasher safe
Platinum Glass Process After undergoing 1500 dishwasher cycles, Spiegelau stemware was certified as “extremely dishwasher safe” by an independent laboratory. They found no scratching, markings, loss of brilliance, foggy shadows, change in color or brilliance or build up of water chemicals and residue. Spiegelau’s remarkable durability can be attributed in large part to the Platinum Glass process. As the glass goes from its powder to its liquid stage, liquid glass is passed through platinum-lined tubes to eliminate any impurities and remove all imperfections and inconsistencies that might otherwise exist. (Platinum prevents leaching that may occur from other equipment linings.) While more expensive, this innovative use of technology proves Spiegelau’s commitment to quality. The result is a “high performance” wine glass with a remarkable marriage of elegance, functionality and durability.

History
Spiegelau History
The first recorded mention of the Spiegelau factory is in the last will and testament of Erasmus Mospurger, dated 1521.
Throughout history, glass has played a major role in shaping lives, propelling economies and advancing civilization. As thousands of other glass manufacturers have come and gone, the company has endured and flourished. In the sixteenth century, when mirrors were popular in royal courts, the company produced fine glass mirrors, beads and decorative bottles. In 1845 the factory produced snuff bottles, which were all the rage. In 1911 the factory was rebuilt and modernized. In 1926, owner Fritz Pretzfelder gave the company its current name – Kristallglasfabrik Spiegelau GmbH, or The Spiegelau Crystal Glass Factory. During World War II, he fled to England, and returned after the war to take repossession of his company. In 1990 Spiegelau was purchased by Nachtmann Group.

In 2004, Spiegelau was purchased by Georg Riedel, the owner of Riedel Glass Works, and is now part of the Riedel/Nachtmann/ Spiegelau Group. In response to this growth, in 2006, with its reputation on the rise, the company launched Spiegelau USA Ltd., its North American headquarters, under the direction of eleventh generation glass making executive Maximilian Riedel. Spiegelau´s unrelenting commitment to excellence combined with its ability to innovate and still remain accessible has allowed the company to endure and prosper where so many other glass manufacturers have melted away like so much molten glass.

Production From sand and flame come pleasure and beauty
Just how did that sleek, elegant wine glass that rests so smoothly in your hand as you sit and sip with friends come to be? All glass contains certain basic elements, but the “recipe of how these elements are combined, and the process by which the glass is produced, profoundly influence the quality and look of the finished product. A seemingly simple mix of sand, soda and lime, glass is actually a superheated and cooled liquid held in suspension. Glass is comprised mostly of silicon dioxide (silica), to which a potassium compound and sodium carbonate (soda ash) is added to lower its melting point. Lime (calcium oxide) must then be added to make the glass insoluble in water. This mixture is shaped, cooled and hardened into glass – with the crystal clarity, elegant smoothness, and dazzling brilliance that make it radiate beauty on a table.

Beer Classics Beer Classics Spiegelau has developed four different beer glass types that support the characteristics of specific beer styles.
2008/2009 Beer Classics
Lager, Wheat Beer Glass, Beer Tulip, Tall Pilsner
Made with Spiegelau’s trademark qualities of design excellence and durability, the Beer Classics collection combines function and aesthetics as a welcome departure from the awkward, clunky glasses that proliferate in the marketplace. Each of these glasses is especially thin blown, and has a thin rim that lifts the perception of mouth feel and taste. The beer specific glass shape supports the beer in releasing its full spectrum of flavours and delivers them to nose and mouth.
