Autumn Memories
There are many memories that are associated with the season of Autumn: the feeling of sitting in a coffee shop with rain outside and a hot chocolate in hand next to a fireplace, the crunchy red and golden leaves under your feet, the moment when the rain stops and the sky brightens, sweaters and hardy food, trying to squeeze under one umbrella with your friends after you accidentally got caught in the rain. If you asked anyone to describe autumn in one word, I bet it would be cosy. The funny thing is that I never grew up with the memories of Autumn I have just described, as I did not grow up in a country with a noticeable change in seasons- it was mostly hot and hotter. I just understand them as memories and feelings associated with the collective and Northern Hemisphere notion of what ‘Autumn’ entails. The UK, on the other hand, is a great place to experience the transition between summer and autumn. In my first year in the UK, I was fascinated by the changing of leaves and I would spend hours taking walks through
the gardens. Thus, my only memories of the stereotypical idea of Autumn were formed in the UK, and yet I felt like I knew what Autumn ‘feels’ like long before I arrived in England. Therefore, the feeling of cosiness I associate with Autumn comes not from my lived experiences, but from the collective experience which prescribes what ‘Autumn’ should constitute. I find that fascinating - how we give seasons tangible ‘personalities’, associated with certain feelings, colours and objects. Whether I grew up with the experiences I described or not, ‘Autumn’ to me feels alive with its snug and peculiar personality, and I always look forward to experiencing this bitter-sweet change of seasons.
