CASE STUDY – SEATTLE CONVENTION CENTER – SUMMIT BUILDING The recently completed Summit Building at the Seattle Convention Center is an impressive high-rise convention center designed by LMN Architects, completed in 2023. Sitting in the heart of downtown Seattle in a dense urban sprawl, this project presented unique challenges to the developers. The city of Seattle wanted to expand its convention center capabilities but was limited on how far the project could extend. Instead, the building was built vertically, going up multiple floors rather than horizontally to reduce sprawl. These distinctive, staggered floors feature a unique floorplan layout with more mindful spaces and a public art space.

The Summit Building boasts an impressive feature: SoftGrid® Skyline acoustic modules have been used throughout the convention center concourse. This design is visible on multiple levels and creates an illusion of urban horizons across the high ceilings of the Summit Building. Expansive arrays of interconnected acoustic cloud systems form continuous fields of a cityscape. This design provides convention goers with acoustic attenuation, creating a more peaceful and quieter atmosphere for all. Third-party lighting shines from above and throughout the modules, creating functional, decorative lighting effects onto the acoustic clouds. The Summit Building has already won several awards, including the 2023 Hospitality Design Award in the Event Space Category, and is certified LEED New Construction Platinum.

INDUSTRY NEWS & REPORTS Design Trends of 2024 The commercial design industry is expected to shift significantly towards creating dynamic working environments that offer employees revamped functional spaces as we enter 2024. Experts predict that modern workspaces in 2024 and beyond will focus on promoting wellness, collaboration, and sustainability. Let’s look at other popular design trends that will greatly impact commercial design this year. 1

Textured Walls Moving away from flat walls, expect threedimensional textured walls to become statement pieces in commercial design this year. Ribbed paneling is a prime example of how a material can add texture and visual appeal to different design styles. From scalloped walls to ribbed panels, this textured look shapes the panel’s contemporary look and character.

2

Acoustic Baffles Rectilinear baffles might be replaced by designs that feature organic, free-form shapes across the space. Moreover, we could see more geometric and abstract baffle formations this year. To embrace biophilia, designers could even incorporate plants and other greenery into baffle systems.

3

Flexible Spaces Creating productive, welcoming environments for employees is crucial as they return to the office. These spaces offer a warm, comfortable, and productive environment surpassing at-home workstations. Additionally, these enhanced spaces provide flexibility in hybrid offices, catering to employees who prefer to work from home and in the office.

4 Sustainability and Biophilia

Newspaper

Sustainability is an important aspect that companies cannot afford to ignore. We expect to see more ecofriendly construction projects, especially as builders require more sustainable building materials. Biophilic design incorporates natural elements into the workplace to enhance employee productivity and well-being, featuring workstations surrounded by plants or made of organic materials such as wood.

5

Holistic Wellnes From employees to customers, we expect more emphasis on maintaining people’s happiness and health. Through proper acoustics, clean air quality, and the right lighting for any task, employers can make their offices a productive place to be.

Color Trends 2024 Palette In years past, commercial design was limited to professional yet safe color palettes that may give way to more colorful options. Industry experts predict soft, playful color trends, including natural tones, will be popular in the coming year. This calming, soothing palette from paint manufacturer Benjamin Moore® shows a range of these comforting hues.

Whtie Dove

Pristine

Topaz

Teacup Rose

Honeybee

Regent Green

Antique Pewter

Blue Nova

Polar Sky

Hazy Lilac

Color of the Year: Pantone® has revealed Peach Fuzz as their annual color of the year, bringing more soft hues to future spaces. This pastel tone will bring in a wave of colorful hues, accentuating commercial and residential spaces. This trend towards soft, natural tones aligns with the recent launch of Arktura’s Elementals Collection of Soft Sound® acoustic finishes and our upcoming Vivids Collection.
