The Sunset Media Center in Los Angeles is a mixed-use development combining multiple levels of program. It acts as destination in the busy Sunset Corridor but also a familiar hub in the daily lives of the people who work there. As part of the building’s recent renovation, Arktura created a custom louvered facade that transitions down three levels of parking and melds with exterior ceiling system baffles from our Atmosphera® family of products.

“It’s about understanding the city at a larger scale and seeing a way for that urban logic to fit into a building. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 20 years. Maybe it just seeped in.

1313 SUNSET
Los Angeles-based firm Warren Techentin Architecture enlisted Arktura to design and manufacture its Elysian Fields exterior feature facade. The cladding comprised of Exterior Graphic Perf® designed in tandem with Arktura’s Solution Studio® to pay homage to nearby automotive body shops. The eprforated and formed aluminum panels gently curve along Sunset Boulevard providing protection against the harsh sun. It supports flared voids to allow the inclusion of expansive sliding windows for the residences within. In keeping up with the ever-changing eclectic character of Los Angeles, this project provides a parametric poem of perforations to the neighborhood it graciously nests within.

FOLONIS ARCHITECTURE SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA, USA
TESLA
At the crossroad of the Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Place, with Michael W. Folonis Architects and Arktura’s Solution Studio®’s guidance, Tesla developed a facade inspired by the namesake of the company, Nikola Tesla, and magnetic flux diagrams to wrap the exterior facade of their flagship auto showroom. Translating the inspired brief, Arktura utilized proprietary software to develop the complex curved custom exterior Graphic Perf® system into a synergetic graphic form to capture the relationship between magnetic flux and electron decay. The resulting facade is visually impactful and filters heat, sunlight, and serves as a rain shield while representing the electric propulsion’s linear energy release.

PRESERVATION THROUGH PERFORATION
STUDIO PALI FEKETE ARCHITECTS SILVERLAKE, CALIFORNIA, USA
COCKERHAM
In 1926, oil tycoon Edward Petitfils, in true “California Style” commissioned Wallace Neff, iconic early 20th Century Architect, to design what would become the historical Ptetfils Residence. Almost a century later, the legacy renews as its new owners request a renovation by Studio Pali Fekete Architects to modernize the home. SPFA worked with the Secretary of the Interior to preserve the historic homes’ distinctive character and maintained its landmark designation while uniting the house with modern advances, technologies, materials, and insight. Arktura manufactured the Exterior Graphic Perf® screen facade that was part of the new additions in the preservation efforts. In support of the preservation, the perforation pattern mimics the “original home’s precast concrete window grilles.” The perforated bronze anodized aluminum panels open and close on hinges, providing the homeworner with clear views, intimate privacy, and sun-shielding options. Now named the Morgan Phoa Library & Residence, the project has garnered awards in preservation, restoration, and adaptive reuse for SPFA.
“It has been the honor of my career to lead a talented team of people in designing a flagship building for my alma mater, I spent my formative years as an aspiring architect at UNLV studying the buildings on campus and never anticipated that I would have the opportunity to contribute to the campus.
- MICHAEL DEL GATTO
CARPENTER SELLERS DEL GATTO ARCHITECTS LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, USA
UNLV
Carpenter Sellers Del Gatto Architects designed the new Hospitality Hall of UNLV’s William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration. Arktura worked with Del Gatto to develop the Secare® facade, to add texture that is visible from both outside and inside the structure, creating an impressive visual feature. Del Gatto strived to mirror the experience the students would have entering the hospitality industry as part of the UNLV’s premier program in the building’s architecture by creating a space that reflects the industry’s finest resorts. The LEED Silver Certified Hall’s glass entranec is cloaked in a Secare® facade of jagged steel tubes by Arktura. This facade contributes to the campus’s eclectic presence. Still, it exudes a visually dynamic and permanent presence while simultaneously reducing the harsh desert sun’s western exposure by up to 60% for its occupants.

SIMPSON COULTER STUDIO HENDERSON, NEVADA, USA
SECTA
Southeast Career Technical Academy, a magnet public high school in Nevada, required a facade to protect its students and its building from the Las Vegas heat. Simpson Coulter Studio sought out Arktura to design an exterior system that would provide sun-shielding and evoke pride by incorporating the school mascot’s image - the roadrunner - and signage for SECTA’s campus. The stunning rendition of the imagery was made possible by Arktura’s Graphic Perf®, which uses proprietary software to render tonal variations in perforated panels. The resulting exterior mimics higher-educational campuses and provides ample natural light within its learning spaces.
