From the President and Chairman of the Board Dear Friends, Our staff and volunteers always respond when called upon. Animals in distress, neglected, or abused receive the care and attention they deserve, as they have since our founding in 1899. The Animal Rescue League of Boston’s new mission statement reaffirms what has been true throughout our 117-year history:
“We are an unwavering champion for animals in need, committed to keeping them safe and healthy in habitats and homes.” We are excited to share with you ARL’s new vision for the future detailed in the following pages. This plan was carefully developed over the past three years and was supported by analysis of animal needs in our community, research from the broader animal welfare field, along with guidance from staff, volunteers, supporters, and ARL’s Board of Directors. As we look ahead into the next chapter of our organization’s rich history, our task is to ensure that the Animal Rescue League of Boston remains an unwavering champion for animals in need, as well as a reliable resource for people who care for them, and a dependable partner for the communities where they live. In order to realize this vision,
2
we must align our resources for greatest impact and sustain and expand the circle of individuals and businesses that will support this ambitious quest. Every animal deserves a safe and healthy home, and when people are unable to provide one, they should be connected with the resources they need to make things right. We also believe that through effective public advocacy we can strengthen laws and policies that protect animals from unnecessary suffering and neglect. This ambitious call to action is reflected in our new vision for the future. We ask all who share our goals to reaffirm a commitment to the future we all hope to achieve. Together, we can make it happen. Sincerely,
Mary Nee President
Malcolm McDonald Board Chair

VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Over the past three years, the ARL has embarked on a journey to evaluate the needs of animals in Massachusetts, to look beyond our borders to identify the innovations and best practices of animal welfare organizations across the nation, and to look within to assess our strengths and skills. All of this planning was undertaken in order to chart a new course for the ARL’s future. Along this journey we asked many big questions: what is our mission — our reason for being; what are our core values and beliefs for animals and people; and, what is our vision for the future? We shared research and analysis and sought the counsel and feedback from our dedicated and talented staff, committed volunteers, donors, and our Board of Directors. From these learnings, we set out to craft a future vision not only for the organization, but also for the animals in our communities whose lives we seek to improve every day. The outcomes of this effort are new expressions of our mission, values, guiding principles, and vision for the future. To achieve these ideals we have developed strategic goals to be met in the next five years. The next several pages outline the key elements of our plan. Since 1899 the ARL has responded to the needs of animals and has sought to foster a more humane community for both animals and people. The mission, vision, and plans outlined here grow out of and remain true to this rich history. It is our hope that this new framework will guide the ARL to achieve even greater impact for animals in need well into the year 2020 and beyond.

OUR V I S ION Animals are safe and healthy in the communities where they live. Our vision is to confront animal cruelty and neglect at its root causes. Through programs, services, and facilities focused on accessible animal care, public advocacy, and sustained anti-cruelty efforts, we will be a resource for people and an unwavering champion for animals most in need. Our focus will be to meet people and animals where they are, bringing veterinary and wellness services directly to those who need it most, so that animals are safe and healthy living in communities and out of shelters. We will align our resources to support this vision through a coordination of existing programs and the development of new, community-based services. The impact of our work will be seen in the lives of animals most in need across Massachusetts, with the greatest effect in our primary service areas of Greater Boston, Eastern Massachusetts, and the Cape Cod regions. We will strive to provide high-quality direct animals care which meets best practice standards in animals welfare. To meet these standards, we will pursue continuous improvement and innovation in program models and administrative operations, and we will continually measure and evaluate our performance and impact. Acknowledging that our success rests upon the skills and commitment of a well-trained and supported team of staff and volunteers, we are committed to cultivating an organization where they can excel. In turn, this ARL team will collaborate with community groups and other animal welfare organizations to leverage even greater impact and positive outcomes for animals.

Guiding Principles We believe that an animal’s welfare should be considered in terms of “Five Freedoms.” The freedoms guide our approach to animal welfare. 1 Freedom from Hunger and Thirst 2 Freedom from Discomfort 3 Freedom from Pain, Injury, or Disease 4 Freedom to Express Normal Behavior 5 Freedom from Fear and Distress
TEAMWORK T R A N S PA R E N C Y
Strategic Goals In order to see our vision realized, the ARL areas of focus for the next 5 years are: • Prevent animal cruelty and neglect by strengthening law and public policy and increasing community awareness and action to report and combat abuse. • Grow and refocus programs targeted towards those animals in greatest need and to the people who care for them. • Grow volunteer membership and attract and retain a well-trained, committed staff to support program growth and strategic goals. • Increase financial resources to achieve greater impact for animals in need. • Enhance the capacity of ARL infrastructure to ensure the most effective and efficient use of resources for achieving organizational goals.

Anna Harris Smith Legacy Society The Anna Harris Smith Legacy Society is an exceptional group of supporters who are passionate about helping animals now and after their lifetime. Each member has started to build a personal legacy of compassion by committing to a planned gift that will support our vision that all animals are safe and healthy in their habitats and homes. Planned gifts are a flexible and powerful investment that will care for animals where they belong, improve communities, and prevent animal neglect and abuse everywhere. If you have already included the ARL in your estate plans or are thinking of joining the Anna Harris Smith Legacy Society, please contact Advancement at (617) 426-9170 or advancement@arlboston.org.
