OUR MISSION The Animal Rescue League of Boston is dedicated to rescuing domesticated animals and wildlife from suffering, cruelty, abandonment, and neglect.
Tuukka was one of 13 puppies the ARL rescued from cruel conditions. Today, he is thriving in his new home.
T
Sugar was taken in by the ARL after she had been seriously neglected. She was recently adopted.
Philbert lost his leg to an illegal leghold trap. After six months of recovery at the ARL, he found a loving new family.
he red barn in our logo reminds us of where the Animal Rescue Leage of Boston (ARL) came from and stands as an important symbol of protection against the suffering so many animals endure.
The brutal treatment of horses, cats, and dogs in Boston’s neighborhoods first moved Anna Harris Smith to establish the ARL and open animal shelters throughout the state in 1899. She asked many ARL supporters for the use of their barns to provide refuge for homeless animals. Harris Smith herself dedicated considerable time and resources to helping Boston’s working horses. In the red barn adjacent to her summer residence in Dedham, she offered a haven from the poor and sometimes cruel treatment they often suffered. Though horses may no longer roam the streets of Boston, animal suffering, cruelty, abandonment, and neglect still exist today. Animals like Tuukka, Sugar, and Philbert still need your help. arlboston.org 1
From the President & Chairman of the Board
Dear Friends, We are very happy to report that through the hard work of staff, volunteers, and your extraordinary generosity, in 2013 we were able to provide muchneeded assistance and care to over 14,000 animals. They arrived at our doors from many different paths: emergency rescues, law enforcement investigations, transfers from other shelters and owner surrenders. No matter how they arrived, each was treated with kindness and compassion. Including Puppy Doe, the young adult dog found tortured, starved, and left for dead in the fall of 2013. Our initial forensic analysis of Puppy Doe revealed an extreme level of abuse, and compelled us to bring her case to the attention of the Quincy Police Department and Norfolk County District Attorney. Our on-going work to pursue justice in her case continually reminds us that there is still much progress to be made in the way we care for and value animals in our society. With that in mind, we are evaluating virtually every corner of our organization and also looking outside our doors to learn about emerging programs and best practices of animal welfare organizations all across the country. We want to continue building a foundation of knowledge that will support a vision for our future; a future where we can reach more animals in need, prevent abuse and cruelty, and help foster a more humane society for both people and animals. While we plan for the ARL’s future, we also continue to work every day for a better future for animals. Already in 2014, we rallied our supporters to help push through passage of the PAWS act. Inspired by Puppy Doe, the recently-enacted law increases penalties for animal abuse, requires veterinarians to report abuse, and forms a task force to comprehensively review all animal-related laws in Massachusetts. 2 2013 Annual Report
We also brought concerns about the Boston Animal Control Shelter to the attention of Mayor Martin Walsh, which has prompted much needed reform of the city’s Animal Care and Control Department. We believe changes are underway now that will have an immediate positive effect for animals in Boston and, we hope, other animal control facilities in the Commonwealth. Throughout the year we provided support to local law enforcement in hoarding cases, taking in large numbers of animals and getting them ready for adoption; rehabilitated abandoned and neglected animals; and supported pet owners through affordable spay-neuter options, dog training classes, and exceptional private veterinary care through our reinvigorated Boston Veterinary Care clinic. We could not do any of this work without your support. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of thousands of animals and the communities where they live. Sincerely,
Mary Nee Malcolm McDonald President Board Chair

“I chose to support the ARL on a monthly basis for three reasons. One, I learned that while a lump sum of money is always needed and appreciated, rescue groups greatly depend on their monthly donors. I wanted to be a dependable donor and not just donate when something big comes up. The second reason I became a monthly donor is that I usually pick an amount per year that I want to donate and my monthly donations will help me get to my yearly goal. The third and most important reason is because I love animals and want to do as much as I can to help the ones in need.”
