OFFSET ILLUMINATION CONTROL: The control knob for the illuminated reticle on the 5-20x50 is off-set at a 45-degree angle to allow easy adjustments without blocking the view of the turrets, magnification setting or parallax adjustment. RZR ™ ZERO STOP MECHANISM: Vortex’s patented RZR™ (Rapid Zero Return) Zero Stop mechanism on the 5-20x50 prevents the turret from dialing below sight-in range for fast, precise return to zero after temporary elevation correction. HOW TO RANGE WITH MRAD AND MOA RETICLES Using simple formulas, both MOA and mrad hashmarked reticles can be used to estimate distance. This is a useful skill, and provides a good back-up should your laser rangefinder fail or lose battery power. To range with a reticle formula, you can use either the vertical or horizontal scale. Place the reticle on a target of known width or height and read the number of mrads or MOAs spanned. You will obtain maximum accuracy in ranging by calculating as exact a measurement as possible, down to fractions of an mrad or MOA. Accurate measuring will depend on a very steady hold. The rifle should be solidly braced using a rest, bipod or sling when measuring the size of the target or nearby object. Once you have an accurate reading, use a formula to calculate the distance.

Target’s Known Width or Height in Meters x 1000 = Range in Meters Target’s Width or Height in mrads as Measured on Reticle Target’s Known Width or Height in Inches x 27.8 = Range in Yards Target’s Width or Height in mrads as Measured on Reticle Mrad Example: Ranging a 6-foot target stand (2 yards) at 4 mrads to get 500 yards.

MOA RANGING FORMUL A Target’s Known Width or Height in Inches x 95.5 = Range in Yards Target’s Width or Height in MOAs as Measured on Reticle Note: In the MOA ranging formula, a shooter may substitute 100 for 95.5 in the interest of speedier calculations. Be aware that this will produce a five percent over-estimation error of the yardage distance obtained. MOA Example: Ranging a 6-foot target stand (72 inches) at 10 MOAs yields 688 yards.

FIRST FOCAL PLANE VERSUS SECOND FOCAL PLANE RIFLESCOPES All riflescope reticles can be termed either first focal plane (FFP) or second focal plane (SFP) depending upon their internal location within the riflescope. FFP reticles are located in the front of the erector tube near the windage and elevation turrets; SFP reticles are located in the eyepiece assembly. First Focal Plane Reticles (FFP)

Second Focal Plane Reticles (SFP)

This style of reticle will appear to grow or shrink in size as the magnification changes; reticle details appear heavier at higher magnifications and finer at lower magnifications. The main advantage of an FFP reticle is that the reticle subtensions used for ranging, holdover, and wind drift correction are consistent at all magnifications.

This style of reticle will not change in size as the magnification changes. The advantage of a SFP reticle is that the reticle maintains the same appearance at all magnifications. Reticle subtensions used for ranging, holdover and wind correction are only valid at a single magnificationâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;generally the highest.

Both minute-of-angle (MOA) and milliradian (mrad) unit of arc scales are effective when using subtension measurements for ranging and bullet trajectory drop compensation in riflescope reticles.

MRAD

MOA

MRAD unit of arc measurements are based on the radian. A radian is the angle subtended at the center of a circle by an arc that is equal in length to the radius of the circle.There are 6.283 radians in a circle and 1000 milliradians in a radian for a total of 6283 milliradians (mrads) in a circle. An mrad will subtend 3.6 inches at a distance of 100 yards. Most riflescopes using mrad adjustments will use 1/10 mrad clicks which subtend .36 inches at 100 yards.

MOA unit of arc measurements are based on degrees and minutes. There are 360 degrees in a circle and 60 minutes in a degree for a total of 21,600 minutes in a circle. A minute of angle will subtend 1.05 inches at a distance of 100 yards. Most riflescopes using MOA adjustments will use 1/4-minute clicks which subtend .26 inches at 100 yards.
