“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”
– Galatians 6:9
It’s time for our August issue and time, once again, to showcase the winners of our annual “Best Of” competition. Each year, online voting is conducted throughout all of our Living Magazine communities to determine which businesses our readers think are the very best in: Beauty & Wellness, Dining, Entertainment, Healthcare, Home & Garden, Professional Services, and Retail, in your area. Within these pages, we’ll introduce you to some of those winners, business owners and healthcare providers who’ve gone above and beyond for our community. Congratulations to each of our “Best Of” winners!
August also means back to school. With school comes a welcome return to routine and a great time to establish some healthy routines such a family prayer time each morning or evening. How about posting a weekly scripture to memorize as a family? A good one for the beginning of a new school year is Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Consider beginning school with a note to your child’s teacher letting them know your family will be praying for them throughout the school year and inviting them to let you know about any special petitions they may have. May God keep all our students, teachers, administrators, and school workers safe and happy this school year.
Wow, Summer has almost come and gone. Mansfield is still the place to be as we round out the month of August. Speed camps are offered for teenagers all throughout the month, helping you to run faster and move better.

For the outdoors types we are offering our “Wild about Birds” event on the 13th, all at Oliver Nature Park.
Calling all Pickle Ball enthusiasts, you won’t want to miss an 80’s themed “Paddle Battle Pickleball Tournament at the Mansfield Activities Center (MAC) on the evening of the August 9th. Invite your cheering section and let’s have fun.

AUGUST 6 // 10 TO 25: THE SCIENCE OF MOTIVATING
YOUNG PEOPLE
BY DAVID YEAGER, PHD
Neuroscientists have discovered that around age ten, puberty spurs the brain to crave socially rewarding experiences, such as pride, admiration, and respect, and to become highly averse to social pain, such as humiliation or shame. As a result, young people are subtly reading between the lines of everything we say, trying to interpret the hidden implications of our words to find out if we are disrespecting or honoring them. Surprisingly, this sensitivity to status and respect continues into the mid-twenties.
In 10 to 25 , acclaimed developmental psychologist David Yeager explains how to adopt what he terms the mentor mindset, which is a leadership style that’s attuned to young people’s need for status and
respect. Anyone can adopt the mentor mindset by following a few highly effective and easy-to-learn practices. Yeager’s scientific experiments have shown these practices reduce a wide variety of behavior problems, including school dropout, unhealthy eating, stress, purposelessness, mental health problems, and more.
An essential read for anyone who interacts with young people, 10 to 25 is a groundbreaking book that offers long-term strategies to help nurture well-adjusted, independent, accomplished young people who contribute to society in positive ways — all while making our own lives easier.

A LUKEWARM dilemma
THE PECULIAR DISCONNECT IN THE AMERICAN CHURCH
BY MIKE MAZYCK
“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Origin of the creation of God, says this: I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of My mouth.” (Revelation 3:14–16)
Let’s summarize: God just told the church at Laodicea that He has taken the temperature of their hearts, and they are in grave danger. He’s telling them they make Him nauseous. Their version of Christianity made Him want to puke them out of His mouth. Their moderate, somewhere in the middle, response to the message of the Gospel disgusted Him. And He is warning them in the most serious way possible.
But what goes through your mind when you read those words? Do you, like many, fi nd yourself wondering; These words were written to His “church” at Laodicea, yet they will be vomited out of His mouth. How could this be so? What does this really mean? Surely, He isn’t telling His “church” they are in danger of Hell!
Maybe you say to yourself; These words were written to those Laodiceans two thousand years ago; they don’t apply to us today!
Or maybe this popular thought crosses your mind; These words must have come from the Father – that God of the Old Testament that was full of wrath and fury! They could not have come from my New Testament Jesus, the gentle and tender one, who is always longing for His children to come snuggle up in His lap. My loving New Testament Jesus will certainly keep me from this divine threat. I would like to address a few of these things…
One, it is clear from the Scriptures, and especially from the words of Jesus, that there is a visible church and an invisible church! The visible church is made up of all who profess to believe in Jesus. It’s made up of the wheat and the tares. (Matthew 13:24-30,36-43) They all profess His name… but many have deceived themselves. (Matthew 7:21-23) The invisible church is made up of only the true believers — the wheat! The fact that this passage is addressed to the “church” at Laodicea, in no way guarantees He is speaking to true believers!
Two, while it is my belief that He is speaking to a church full of false converts (tares), and that by using the word “vomit”, He is clearly speaking of everlasting damnation, I also know there are some theologians who would disagree with that position. Regardless of where one may stand on that topic though, there is one thing I believe we can all agree upon; This verse contains a threat! A divine threat! And due to the graphic imagery He used to illustrate that threat, we can only assume that it is extremely serious!
Three, the context is clear and obvious to any reader; These words came from the mouth of our New Testament Jesus — the soft and cuddly one!
Lastly, does this passage have application to our church today? Could He be speaking to us? To you? Or was this letter, that was sovereignly chosen to be included within the pages of Scripture, to be read by all believers for ages to come, only for those members of the Laodicean church two thousand years ago? I believe Jesus answered this question best in the very last sentence of this exact letter to the Laodiceans; “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches” (Revelation 3:22)
But here is where things begin to get interesting. When I speak to Christians about this passage of Scripture, and the graphic threat it contains, they all tend to agree that it does in fact have application to us today. But they don’t stop there. When I ask the logical follow up question: Do you believe that our church — the one in America — is lukewarm? Do you know what their response is? Likely the same as
yours would be: Yes, I do! I have yet to ask any professing Christian that question who has not responded by affi rming that the church in America is lukewarm!
Could this really be true? My friend, if I am understanding these words in Revelation correctly, then I fi nd this to be an astounding, and terrifying, indictment! The implications of such an accusation should surely drive us to a deep and sobering reflection; We are talking about the ones sitting next to us in church; our friends — our family!
But now I’d like to make a bold assumption; If all these same Christians — the ones who accuse our current church in America of being lukewarm — were gathered in one church building on Sunday morning, and the preacher had the audacity to ask the question; “Do you believe you are lukewarm?” I’ve come to the conclusion there would be very few who would say to themselves; Yes, I am lukewarm!
Do you see the peculiar disconnect? If the assumption I am making is true, then something must be wrong. If the vast majority of professing Christians in America believe the church is lukewarm, yet most of those same believers do not believe themselves to be lukewarm, there is a problem. Either they have made an incorrect assessment of the church, or they have made an incorrect assessment of themselves! I pray, for their sake, it is not the latter.
You may ask, “Mike, why do you assume they don’t believe they are lukewarm?” That is a fair question, and I will give you, my answer.
I’ve come to this conclusion for a very simple reason; I see no great concern in them. When I bring up this passage, and that word, lukewarm , and the state of our church, I see no signs of great distress. There is no fear or trembling. I look in their eyes. I see no tears. There is no anxiety and worry on the countenance of their face. I listen to their words. I hear the tone of their voice. Their response is casual and peaceful; With a bit of disappointment on their face, and a slight raising of the eyebrow, they give a nod of affi rmation that the church in America is indeed lukewarm — and then it’s on to the next topic of conversation.
Based on their response, I see only two options: They are either a fool who does not take seriously the threat being made by these graphic words of Jesus, or they do not believe they are in danger; they do not believe they are lukewarm. Based on the two options available, I choose to extend the same grace I would hope to receive and refuse to label them a fool. I choose to believe they have examined themselves and passed the test. Praise God!... if they have examined well!
What do you think about this passage? What do you think about the state of the church in America? What were the results of your own examination? Scan the QR code and leave me a comment on this article to let me know.

WHEN SPINE SURGERY IS THE BETTER OPTION
Considering spine surgery is a significant decision and typically comes after other treatments have been explored — but it can be your best path to overcoming diffi cult, recurring pain. Here are some of the reasons to consider spine surgery and early signs that it might be needed:
1. Persistent Pain: Chronic back or neck pain that doesn't improve with rest or conventional treatments like physical therapy, medications, or injections.
2. Radiating Pain: Pain that spreads from the spine to the arms or legs, often accompanied by tingling, numbness, or weakness, indicating nerve compression.
3. Loss of Function: Significant weakness or numbness in the limbs, difficulty lifting objects, walking, or performing daily tasks due to muscle weakness or nerve damage.
4. Structural Problems: Diagnosed structural issues such as spinal deformities (scoliosis), spinal instability, or degenerative disc disease.
5. Quality of Life: Severe pain or disability that significantly impacts daily activities and overall quality of life.

START PREPARING NOW FOR A SMOOTH TRANSITION FROM SUMMER TO SCHOOL
I remember being six years old and a neighborhood kid explaining to me that summer was only three months long. In my young mind, we went to school for a year, then had a year to play and enjoy summer freedom. It was not welcome news. Summer break today is even shorter, averaging only two and a half months. Don’t look now, but it’s time to make the transition from lazy summer days to school routine. Here are some ideas for making that adjustment smooth — and even pleasant.
VISIT THE SCHOOL
Whether your child is returning to a familiar school or starting a new one, ring up and see if there’s a time you and your child can pop over and stroll around a bit. Visit the building where they’ll be having class, the cafeteria where they’ll eat lunch, the playground, gym, computer lab, etc., and give them a chance to ask questions. Becoming familiar or reacquainted with these spaces can relieve some of the stress of that first day.
ADOPT YOUR SCHOOL
ROUTINE EARLY
Give your kids — and yourself —

a week or two to adjust to earlier bedtimes and mornings. Reinstate evening bath routines and start waking up earlier a couple of weeks before school is scheduled to begin. That way, you’ll all be adjusted by the time the first day of class arrives. For very young kids, you can even have them practice eating lunch from a lunchbox.
MODEL POSITIVITY
In this and all things, your child takes their cue from you. Give them ample opportunity to talk about how they’re feeling about heading back to school and remind them of the fun aspects, such as reconnecting with friends. Talk about the things they like, such as art, music, or gym. For very young kids, talk them through what an average day will look like. Above all, keep your words and your mood positive. Let them know you expect this to be an amazing school year.
CLEAR THE
FAMILY SCHEDULE
As much as possible, simplify your evenings and weekends, especially during the first couple of weeks of school. Kids often come home exhausted those first

few days and will need plenty of downtime to rest.
ESTABLISH A HOMEWORK STATION
A good homework routine can make even reluctant students more compliant. They need to know the ground rules, and the rules need to stay consistent. (No technology until homework is complete is a good one.) And they need a nice, uncluttered homework station on which to work.
PREPARE FOR THE MORNING THE NIGHT BEFORE
My goal was to give my children a peaceful morning before sending them off to school each day. For me, it was worth spending an extra half hour at night planning breakfast, setting backpacks by the door, laying out their clothes, packing lunches, etc., to avoid a frantic start to the day.
Lastly, extend grace to your kids and yourself. Transitions are difficult, and this one probably won’t be perfect. But before you know it, you’ll be back in your schooltime routine and on your way to enjoying a great year.

THE SURPRISING ADVANTAGES OF GROUP FITNESS
BY ANNETTE BROOKS
Group fitness classes, both in-person and virtual, have surged in popularity as people seek effective, engaging, and social ways to achieve their health and fi tness goals. Each format offers a unique set of benefits that cater to different preferences and lifestyles, making fitness more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
IN-PERSON GROUP FITNESS: THE POWER OF PRESENCE
An immediate benefit of in-person group fitness classes is the tangible sense of community and accountability. Being physically present with others creates a unique energy and motivation that is hard to replicate. This shared experience can foster a sense of camaraderie and support, making it easier to push through workouts.
In-person classes also offer the advantage of immediate feedback from instructors. They help you with form, adjust intensity, and provide modifications on the spot, ensuring you get the most out of every session safely. This direct interaction can be especially benefi cial whether you’re a beginner or looking to master a new type of workout.
You’ll also benefit from a structured schedule provided by in-person classes. This can be a powerful motivator for those of us who struggle with self-discipline when it comes to exercise. Knowing you have a class at a specific time creates a commitment that can help establish a consistent routine. The variety of classes available at gyms and studios — from spinning, dance fitness, strength training, and Pilates to HIIT and yoga — means you can continuously challenge yourself and keep your workouts exciting.
VIRTUAL GROUP FITNESS: THE FLEXIBILITY OF DIGITAL
On the flip side, virtual group fitness classes offer unparalleled convenience and flexibility. You can join a live session from anywhere with an internet connection, eliminating commute time and making it easier to fit exercise into a busy schedule. This accessibility is a game-changer for people who live far from fi tness facilities, have irregular work hours, or are managing household responsibilities.
Virtual classes also provide a level of anonymity that can be comforting for beginners or those self-conscious about exercising in front of others. You can work out in the privacy of your own home, at your own pace, without worrying about judgment. This can be a significant confidence booster and a gentle way to ease into a fitness routine.
Another benefit of virtual fitness is the vast array of options available online. Platforms offer classes from instructors worldwide, allowing you to try different styles and fi nd what works best for you. Whether it’s a calming yoga or Qi Gong session, a high-energy dance workout, or a challenging strength training class, the possibilities are practically endless. Plus, with the ability to connect with participants globally, virtual classes can still provide a sense of community and shared purpose, even from afar.
START ON YOUR PATH TO IMPROVED FITNESS AND HEALTH
Whether in-person or virtual, group fi tness classes offer a dynamic and supportive environment that can make the journey toward health and fitness more enjoyable and effective. So why not explore what group fitness has to offer? Your future self will thank you.
STRESS-FREE smile
TAKING THE ANXIETY OUT OF DENTAL WORK
BY ANNETTE BROOKS
Do you feel anxious about going to the dentist? It could be due to a negative experience in the past. Perhaps the treatment was unexpectedly painful, or you felt rushed through your appointment. Maybe the dentist wasn’t very communicative, the staff was unfriendly, or it felt like they dictated treatment without adequately explaining and showing you why you need it. Did you feel they judged you because you hadn’t visited the dentist in a while? Or maybe it’s a case of fear of the unknown.
Whatever the reason, please don’t let fear and anxiety hold you back from maintaining your oral health and keeping your smile in top condition. Many dentists know how to help you overcome these feelings and make seeing them a positive, stress-free experience. Here are some common methods used to accomplish this.
Open Communication and Patient Education: Effective communication that builds trust is an essential component of patient comfort. Dentists who put their patients first take the time to explain procedures in a way that is easy to understand, which can help alleviate fears and misconceptions. They also encourage patients to express their concerns, actively listen, and provide clear explanations about what to expect, and the technology and techniques they use to make treatment comfortable.
Empathy and Understanding: Recognizing and acknowledging a patient’s fear can go a long way toward making you feel more comfortable.
Welcoming Setting, Soothing Spa-like Amenities: Many dental offi ces are designed with a calming environment, inviting décor, and comfort amenities. During treatment
and exams, music or television, aromatherapy, blankets, noise-canceling headphones, and even virtual reality goggles may be available. Aftercare may include lip balm and a warm face towel.
Pain Management: Advances in dental techniques and anesthetics have made it possible to perform procedures with minimal to no discomfort. In addition to numbing gels and local anesthetics, dentists may offer various forms of anesthesia and sedation to help manage pain and anxiety. They include nitrous oxide, oral sedatives, or even IV sedation. These methods help patients relax or even sleep through their procedures.
Behavioral Techniques: Deep breathing, guided imagery, or progressive muscle relaxation can help patients manage anxiety. Some dentists or their dental staff may teach these techniques to patients to help them relax during their appointments.
Technology: Many dentists use advanced technology to make procedures more comfortable, effective, efficient, and less intimidating. For example, laser dentistry can be less invasive, faster, and may be virtually pain-free compared to traditional methods. And digital scanners eliminate the need for using goopy impression materials that can make you feel like gagging.
Regular Appointments: Encouraging regular dental visits helps patients become more familiar with the dental office environment, the staff, and routine procedures, which can reduce anxiety over time.
Recognizing that each patient’s level of anxiety is different, dentists often tailor their approach to meet individual needs, whether it requires more time to explain procedures, the use of sedation, or simply providing a reassuring presence. By employing these and other strategies, dentists aim to create a positive dental experience that encourages regular dental visits and maintaining good oral health.

ARTISTIC discovery
SELECTING AND SHOWCASING YOUR CREATIVE COMPOSITIONS
BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT
The right piece of art can do many things. It can evoke emotion, tell a story, start a conversation, serve as a focal point, and fi nish off a room. When considering artwork for your home, here are some things to consider.
Begin by evaluating the space and what size artwork would fi t without looking too big or too small. Do you want one dramatic piece or a grouping? Next, consider your budget. From affordable prints to high-end originals, how much can you comfortably spend without straining your finances? Don’t forget to factor in the cost of framing and lighting your art. Knowing your price and the size that will work best in your space will help narrow your search.
What kind of statement are you hoping to make? Do you want to color match or color crash? If you have a neutral palette, it can be fun to excite the eye with a pop of color. But if you already have a lot of colors in play, it might be better to choose a few and buy a piece that echoes those shades.
What mood would you like to create? Sophisticated and elegant or playful and fun? Artwork for the primary bedroom might be calming and therapeutic, while works in the living areas are more energetic and vibrant. And you might go downright zany in your outdoor spaces.
You do want to look for consistency in form and line. If your living room furniture features soft curves and fluid lines, look for artwork with sweeping strokes or flowing movement. If your home office furniture has hard, angled, industrial lines, look for art with defi ned lines and crisp detail.
Your frame and lighting are important, too. A frame should work as a bridge between the artwork and its surroundings. You might coordinate your natural wood furniture with a wood frame, or you can create excitement by contrasting vintage gold frames within a modern interior. Again, it’s all about the statement you want to make and emotions you want to evoke.
Generally, lighting should be three times brighter than the rest of the room. You can create this effect by using dimmer lights in the rest of the space or by selecting brighter artwork lights. LED lights are a good choice for bringing out the best in any artwork and reduce the risk damaging your piece.
While there are many online art sellers, it’s best to see the work in person before you buy it. And if you fi nd selecting your own artwork too stressful, consider enlisting the help of a decorator or professional art consultant who will work with you to fi nd the perfect artwork for each space in your home.
When all is said and done, the right piece of artwork for your home is the piece you like, that makes you feel the way you want to feel, and makes your space look the way you want it to look.
Just Picture It!
Mona Lisa’s Hidden Secrets : Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting is said to hide many secrets, including the tiny letters and numbers in her eyes.
Largest Art Theft: In 1990, 13 pieces worth $500 million were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston; they remain missing.
Expensive Doodle: Pablo Picasso’s doodles on napkins are highly valuable and have been sold for thousands of dollars.
Van Gogh’s Love for Yellow: Vincent van Gogh used the color yellow extensively, which some believe was due to a condition called xanthopsia, making him see colors more vividly.
Invisible Art: Artist Yves Klein created “invisible” works, selling empty spaces in exchange for gold.
Banksy’s Pranks: Street artist Banksy once shredded his artwork, Girl with Balloon, right after it was auctioned for over 1 million pounds.
Leonardo’s Notebook: Bill Gates purchased Leonardo da Vinci’s notebook, the Codex Leicester, for $30.8 million in 1994, showcasing the intersection of art, science, and history.
Fantastic Find: For years, a family used a thrift-store painting to cover a hole in the wall until, one day, they noticed a similar painting in the board game Masterpiece. It turns out they had a $1.2 million Martin Johnson Heade.
TROAD HAZARD
CAUTION, DISTRACTED DRIVERS AHEAD
BY PETE ALFANO
he National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines distracted driving as “any activity that diverts attention from the task at hand.”
This includes listening to the radio, drinking or eating while driving, carrying on a conversation with passengers, especially those in the rear seats, turning to scold your kids who are misbehaving in the back, fiddling with the rear-view mirror, combing your hair, applying makeup, adjusting the climate controls, wearing noise-canceling headphones, and smoking. You get the picture?
According to the NHTSA, however, the major culprit is texting. It is considered six times more dangerous than even drunk driving. The NHTSA says that sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent of driving 100 yards with your eyes closed. And research has shown that using a hands-free phone while driving is just as distracting as holding a phone in your hand. It is estimated that drivers lose half of their environmental awareness, resulting in running red lights and stop signs and missing an exit if they are on a highway.
But remember, any kind of distracted driving is dangerous, and not just to drivers and passengers.
The NHTSA reported that 3,308 people died as a direct result of distracted driving in 2022, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found that one of every five victims was a pedestrian, cyclist, or otherwise outside the vehicle.
So, what can we do to cut down on distracted driving? Most states have enacted legislation to strictly limit or prohibit the use of cell phones. In Texas, driving with a hand-held device is illegal, although hands-free phones are allowed. It is illegal to use even a hands-free phone in a school zone and illegal to text while driving anywhere.
Laws are helpful, but education and mindset are considered the key to reducing distracted driving, especially among teenagers. Parents are encouraged to counsel their teenage drivers about the perils of using a cell phone or being distracted by any other means while driving. A survey of high school students in 2019 found that 39% of those who had driven in the previous 30 days had texted or emailed someone at least once while driving. Parents, however, must also practice what they preach because no one of any age should multi-task while driving.
That also means you don’t answer any phone calls while driving. If it is important, the caller will leave a voicemail. If you must make a call, pull over to the side of the road and park before dialing. Set your navigation system before you leave the driveway. And wait until you reach your destination before buying that coffee or cold drink. Truth be told, anyone with a driver’s license has been guilty of distracted driving. So, the next time you hit the road, have a look around you as you are driving. There’s not much wiggle room to spare.
ALL HANDS N DECK
BOATING IS A POPULAR PASTIME IN TEXAS
BY PETE ALFANO
According to Statistica.com, as of 2022, more than 567,000 recreational boats were registered in Texas. That is an armada exceeded by only six states, with Florida leading the way with more than one million registered recreational boats.
Boats come in all shapes and sizes, and a new boat can cost, on average, between $60,000 and $65,000. You can spend much less, of course, and if you are dripping in some of that Texas oil, you can purchase a yacht for well over a million dollars. So, the first order of business is determining your budget, the size of the boat you want, its purpose, and whether you are in the market for a new or used craft.
Perhaps your primary reason for boating is that you enjoy fishing. Maybe you want a boat for relaxing family daytime outings, such as a deck boat or Catamaran. For the more adventurous, you may want a sailboat that requires substantially more effort and skill. Or you might want a cabin cruiser with one or two rooms below deck for sleeping on overnight trips. And we
haven’t forgotten all you maritime Dale Earnhardts who want a sleek, highperformance craft, popularly known as a speed boat.
Just like a car, other factors when budgeting for watercraft include maintenance, storage, and, yes, insurance. Unless you have a smaller boat and do your own maintenance, which still isn’t free, the cost of upkeep can be in the several thousands. Storage may be as simple as towing a boat and keeping it in your garage. You may pay for an indoor or outdoor self-storage facility. You may choose wet storage, which is keeping the boat in the water at a marina, or dry-stack storage, where boats are kept on shelves levels above the ground. Dry-stack storage can generally accommodate boats between 35 and 40 feet long.
Unlike owning a car or house, Texas law does not require a boat owner to have insurance. Nonetheless, insurance is not an option unless you have money to burn. A boat owner can purchase insurance that covers the physical part of the boat, for instance, the engine, transmission, cooling
system, and electrical components. This type of insurance runs from about $750 for full boat coverage to more than $1,000 and higher for a boat with a cabin.
You will also want to protect yourself with comprehensive coverage for damage, either from an accident or natural causes such as storms or fires. This will include liability coverage to provide medical coverage for an accident, which, on average, costs up to $1,000 a year. Again, a lot depends on the size and type of boat.
Finally, watercraft must be registered in Texas and renewed every two years. Anyone born after Sept. 1, 1993, must pass a safety course and acquire a boater education card or license. Also, to avoid fines, all boats from inflatable dinghies to million-dollar yachts must have life jackets for anyone aboard. For motorized boats, a fire extinguisher and bell or horn is required too.
It may be a costly hobby, but recreational boating can be a relaxing way to spend time with friends and family.
SMALL-TOWN charm
FIVE HIDDEN GEMS IN TEXAS
BY CHRISTINA GARCIA
Summer is almost over, but there’s still plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors. Escape the ordinary and stroll or feast your way through these historic Texas towns on a day trip or weekend jaunt you won’t soon forget.
GRANBURY
About an hour southwest of Fort Worth, the city of Granbury offers a relaxing place to enjoy an attractive borough. Enjoy shopping, dining, and live music in the Historic Granbury Square, then explore the surprising Granbury City Beach for outdoor recreation just minutes away, right on Granbury Lake. Those with kiddos shouldn’t miss the chance to venture 20 minutes south and visit the Dinosaur Valley State Park. (Book passes online in advance. Weekends fi ll quickly.) For a “wilder” adventure, take a safari through Fossil Rim State Park and see the fierce yet gentle exotic wildlife up close.
COMFORT
Settled by German “Freethinkers” in the mid-1800s, the tiny unincorporated town of Comfort, Texas, is now a fetching and under-the-radar Hill Country getaway. About 40 minutes west of San Antonio, the quiet hamlet has attracted attention from “French Cowboys” Franklin Dusserre and Dylan Petrich, a pair sprucing up a few charming and historic boutique hotels. The two have helped refi ne the rustic Camp Comfort at the site of
Grandbury Square
Photos: Camp Comfort, Meyer Hotel, Trevo Marketing, The 8th Street Market
Camp Comfort
the old Turn Verein bowling alley on Cypress Creek, elaborating a similar vision of tasteful upgrades at the nearby Meyer Hotel.
Hotel Giles, a historic stone structure designed by Alfred Giles, a prominent 19th-century architect with work across Texas, is another magnifi cent option for travelers, with a sparkling lobby and outdoor courtyard open to the public in a continuation of the communal spirit Comfort’s founders might have approved of.
Stroll High Street, turn down the cross streets between Fifth and Eighth, and enjoy browsing antiques and sipping coffee at The 8th Street Market, then continue to the Comfort Antique Mall and peruse the well-curated selection. Grab lunch on the patio of the local Comfort Pizza and then stop by a wine-tasting room or brewery for an afternoon drink. Head to the nearby Joshua Springs Park and Preserve or James Kiehl River Bend Park for hiking, birding, and swimming.
JEFFERSON
If haunted houses give you a thrill, then be sure to look for the lady in white at The Grove in Jefferson, Texas, about two and a half hours east of Dallas. Ghost tours are said to be a big draw in the area. Otherwise, this unique city in Marion County might call to you for more relaxing reasons. Known as the Bed & Breakfast Capital of Texas, this scenic area offers more than just a few captivating cottages and even
mansions to loll away the hours in. Visit
The Excelsior House Hotel, the oldest hotel in Texas, the Kennedy Manor, or lounge on the wrap-around porches at The Carriage House, to name a few fantastic options, then enjoy some of the comfort food around town. Once you have settled in, step back in time with some nostalgic shopping at the Jefferson General Store or brush up on some local history at the Jefferson Historical Museum. Nearby Caddo Lake and Lake o’ the Pines make excellent outdoor areas for fun and play.
MISSION AND ALAMO
If food is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about travel, then we have an irresistible reason for you to venture down to the city of Mission in the Rio Grande Valley. Ana Liz Pulido of Ana Liz Taqueria won Best Chef in the 2024 James Beard Awards, the only Texas chef to take home a prize this year. Her from-scratch corn and flour tortillas have earned rave reviews, and her small menu boasts house-smoked meats. Birders should sightsee at the World Birding Center. For a shopping adventure and spectacular local dancing event in the Land of Two Summers, cruise 20 minutes east to La Pulga de Alamo, a flea market, on a weekend afternoon. After going viral on TikTok, the market recently attracted international attention with videos of some of the flamboyant, famous dancers at the event.
SALADO
When the weather is hot in historic Salado, Texas, families flock to the beautiful Salado Springs. Water from a crystal clear and refreshing creek runs just beneath Main Street, near the historic Stagecoach Inn motor court entrance, in the peaceful Sirena Park. This small recreation area lends the Bell County town the look of a beach community, drawing bathers toward it in their swimsuits.
Visitors also picnic, lounge on the banks, and even tube a short distance down the picturesque stream. Every Saturday through the end of September, you can follow that route to Barrow Brewing Company, where a weekly farmer’s market brings together dealers of all kinds. Laura Ramirez of Boutique Artesanal Colibri shares gorgeous, handpainted hats decorated by artists from Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Guanajuato. Her wares, and those of many other local makers, are also available across Main Street at boutiques like The Shoppes on Main and Sofi’s. Check out Grace Jones, a store named for the late World War II pilot turned fashion model who settled in Salado. With plenty of antiques, galleries, a glass-blowing studio, and live music on the weekend, Salado aims to please.
