When I was a kid, Easter was about colored eggs and bunnies. I knew the story of Jesus, of course. But now as an adult, I realize the importance of that story—in my life and in the history of the world. Jesus willingly left the perfection of heaven to come to a fallen Earth. He lived a perfect life as an example to you and me. He died a martyr’s death on “the old, rugged cross” to erase the penalty of sin for anyone who chooses to follow Him. As the song goes, “When He was on the cross, I was on his mind”. You were, too. The perfect, sinless Lamb endured inhuman torture and a humiliating death, to pave the way for us. But thank God the story doesn’t end in the garden tomb on Good Friday. On Resurrection Sunday, the tomb burst open, the angels sang in heaven, our Savior stepped forth, and the world has never been the same. That’s the Easter story. Jesus may have been the first to rise, but He won’t be the last. Because He lives, we’ll all live again—with perfect bodies no longer bearing the burdens of mortality. “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, all fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future. Life is worth the living just because He lives.” Glorious Resurrection Sunday from the Daniels family to yours!

April will begin with the fresh fragrances of spring, the hope of Easter and the celebration of National Library Week and National Library Workers Day. Our community libraries and the dedicated people who work, serve and volunteer in them are the unsung heroes of our civilized society. The library is where people of all ages can travel to distant lands, meet people from various cultures and escape from reality. Those few valuable hours spent in the library often help patrons settle their troubled minds. The library provides opportunities to escape the pressures of life without leaving the city, state or country. Mansﬁeld’s Director of Library and Historical Services Yolanda Botello, MLS, reminded our City

Council recently that the work of the library stretches miles beyond the doors of our facility. She painted a picture for each of us and helped us to know that our libraries serve as the “building blocks” of our community. The library’s volumes of books and its engaging community activities will expand the minds of all who partake in that treasure trove of knowledge. Mansﬁeld salutes and oﬀers its most sincere thanks to the “Keepers of Knowledge,” our library workers and volunteers. Let’s continue to support our local libraries by securing the resources they need to help them thrive well into the future.

Produced in cooperation with the Levitt Pavilion, the classes take place on Saturday mornings from 10:00 to 11:00 and feature top Arlington fitness experts from Arlington Yoga Center, Camp Tuf, and the University of Texas at Arlington Department of Athletics. hen my daughter, Molly, was three and a half, we rocked her little world by bringing home a baby brother. From the moment I passed my home pregnancy test, Molly seemed to know something was up. She’d always been on the clingy side but, during the next nine months, she barely left my side — especially at bedtime. I consulted with my older sister, who’s years ahead in raising children. She told me to make a little pallet for Molly alongside my bed. “She’ll get tired of sleeping there, after a few nights, and go back to her own bed,” she assured me. Uhhhh…no. Molly happily slept on that pallet next to my bed for the better part of three years, long after Baby Brother had moved into his own room. But here’s the thing. I loved it. I loved lying down alongside that spunky girl each night. She decided since I’d sung her to sleep so many times, she’d return the favor. Many are the night I dozed off to the sound of my baby girl making up songs about all the things that had happened in her world that day. But the mornings were the best. I absolutely loved hearing this sweet child’s first thoughts in the morning. She’d lie there waiting for me to wake up. When I did and looked over the side of the bed, she’d say, “Mom, can we talk?” It didn’t matter what she said next — what her dreams had been, what she hoped we could make for breakfast, or “Why did Brother wake me up so much last night?” (Good question.) It wasn’t what she said. It was that sweet, early-morning time of just being together. One of those mornings, talking about nothing and everything with Molly, I heard the still, small voice of God say, “This is how I feel when you want to spend time with Me.” If I’d never been a mother, I guess I’d never understand the way our Heavenly Father feels just to have his daughter eager to share time with Him. In Philippians 4:6, God tells us through the Apostle Paul, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Now, that’s a Father who wants to hear from His children.

At Easter, more than any other time, we Christians reflect on the greatest gift we ever received when the curtain was torn top to bottom and heaven was thrown wide open for all believers. Thanks to the sacrifice of our Savior that first Easter morning, we now have complete access to our Heavenly Father — day or night — for praise or lamentation — in our mountaintop moments and when we find ourselves wallowing in the valley — on days when prayers fly from our lips and the times when all we can do is be still in His presence (Psalm 46:10). Our Abba Father is there waiting, watching, and wanting to talk with His children. I heard a pastor recently refer to the cross as “the Mercy Tree.” It’s only through God’s unfathomable mercy that a sinner like you or me has access to all the riches and all the wisdom of God. What is it that’s tugging at your heart this Easter season? Perhaps the challenges of keeping up with work, family life, and just trying to live in a pandemicridden world have caused you to drift from God. No matter how far away you might find yourself, He hasn’t moved. He’s still there with His arms open wide and your name on His lips. Take a moment to let these words from Romans 8:38-39 wash over you, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Through the Apostle Paul God issued His invitation “come boldly to the throne of grace” (Hebrews 4:16). And again through the Prophet Jeremiah, He offered us this goosebump-inducing summons, “Call to me and I will answer you and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” (Jeremiah 33:33) In these verses and others, God leaves little doubt. He wants to hear our thoughts, questions, concerns, requests and just to spend sweet time with His children. Let’s slow down this Easter season, turn off the noise of the world, and just BE still with our God. He’s waiting and hoping to hear from His children.

Yoga changed Lynn Rozak’s life. Her life’s mission is to offer that same transformation to men and women of all ages, body types, and fitness levels. “Yoga elevated my life and changed me, mind and body. After years of practice and teaching yoga on the mat I learned how to break free from the ground and fly in the silks. I knew I had found something magical I had to share.” she said. Lynn and her staff work to make yoga and aerial yoga accessible and obtainable. “Over the past 20 years, I’ve practiced yoga at every studio I could find. Too often, I notice an atmosphere of exclusivity,” she said. “My mission was to create a place where everyone feels welcome, and everyone is able to learn about yoga and aerial in a safe and fun environment.” She’s done exactly that at Sunshine Yoga Shack. “There are many misconceptions about yoga and aerial,” Lynn said. “Yoga is an ancient technique to explore the self through mindfulness. The benefits include a healthy body and mind. People need to understand we start where they are today and grow from there. Every practice will help bring mental clarity and peace as well as a physically stronger and more flexible body. Yoga has been found to help with stress, anxiety and depression.” To further her mission of making yoga accessible for everyone, Lynn opened Sunshine School of Yoga registered through Yoga Alliance, where she trains future yoga and aerial instructors. “We are one of the only studios in the Metroplex that offers comprehensive classes and teacher training for students who want to study on the mat or above it. We begin with the very basics of yoga and cover the history and science of yoga as well as the art of teaching yoga,” she said. When the COVID pandemic threatened to derail her efforts, Lynn and her team transitioned to online and on demand classes in 24 hours. “Since May 2020, all of our yoga and aerial classes, as well as teacher trainings are offered in studio, streaming and on demand. Meet Lynn Rozak, E-RYT-500, YACEP and Reiki Master Lynn is an E-RYT-500-Hour-Certified and Register Yoga Teacher who has taught over 5,000 hours of yoga, a Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (YACEP), and a Reiki Master. She’s certified in seniors yoga, prenatal yoga, and Thai body work and has 100-hour certification in trauma and recovery yoga. A Fort Worth native and 20-year Mansfield resident, Lynn spends her free time with her husband of 22 years, Eric, their three amazing kids, and two dogs. She enjoys reading, practicing and learning all she can about yoga and aerial yoga.

Last week, the Texas Health Hospital team volunteered 100+ hours with the Mansfield Mission Center, which prov ides a f ree healthcare clinic, financial and employment coaching, senior support, a food pantry, and so much more. During their time, they were able to help unload, sort, and tag donations while also preparing food baskets for families in need. “Volunteering with the Mansfield Mission Center was very rewarding — it allowed Texas Health Hospital to serve the community in a different way in the midst of the pandemic. Volunteers went to help others and received a huge personal blessing in return,” said Tiffany Hernandez, Director of Community Engagement & Foundation. Texas Health Hospital wants everyone to feel their mission in action — both inside and outside of the hospital — which is why they strive to be a neighbor in good health and provide uncommon compassion to every person every time.

MOVING FORWARD GROWING STRONGER I N T R O D U C I N G M AY O R A L C A N D I D AT E J I M R O S S BY MEREDITH KNIGHT IM ROSS DIDN’T SET OUT WITH THE IDEA OF RUNNING FOR MAYOR OF ARLINGTON, TEXAS. But after the city established term limits, he found himself at a function chatting with another attorney. “I asked, ‘What are we going to do when Mayor Williams’ term is up?’ He said, ‘You’re gonna’ run.’ We both had a laugh.” But as time went on, Jim began hearing the same idea from more and more people. “I was watching the people I hoped would run to see who’d throw their hat in the ring,” Jim said. “But they were all too busy. It took a while of waiting and watching before I considered, ‘Is this something I can do? Is this something I want to do?” If you’ve been in Arlington long enough, you know Jim is crazy busy himself with a thriving law firm in three locations with dozens of employees. He’s also a father and adoring grandfather and ardent advocate of local non-profits. His life was full and fulfilling.

“I’ve worked hard getting my businesses to where they are,” Jim said. “Mayor of Arlington isn’t a parttime job. It would take 110% of my time and energy. And I had no idea if my businesses could run without me.” But he knew he had outstanding people in place to run his offices. So, he started stepping back and realized the businesses could run fine without him. That’s when he spoke to his kids. “I know politicians families live in a fish bowl and I wouldn’t choose that for my kids, unless they were 100% onboard,” Jim said. “They all said, ‘Dad, do it!’ That’s when I spoke to Mayor Williams and Richard Greene who both encouraged me. So, I was as surprised as anyone to realize I was running for mayor of Arlington, Texas.”

A LEGACY OF SERVICE Jim Ross may not have set out to become mayor of The American Dream City but the life he’s lived has certainly equipped him for the challenge. The son of a blue-collar worker, Jim watched his dad work two and three jobs to give his family the life he wanted for them. His dad had also served in the US Navy. Jim joined the Marine Corp and took his turn serving his country for four years before settling in Texas. Arriving with his wife and young son, Jim took a job with the Arlington Police Department while working at night on his undergraduate degree. Over the next 13 years, he served on Arlington PD’s first fulltime SWAT team, taught self-defense to his fellow officers, and worked as an undercover officer. The latter found him frequently testifying in court where he observed defense attorneys and realized trial work is what he wanted to do. He began his law career practicing environmental law for some of the country’s most prestigious law firms. When he was ready to go out on his own, he began with nothing and built a thriving law practice now including offices in Arlington, Dallas, and Fort Worth, a dozen attorneys, and 36 employees. Any success Jim Ross has experienced as a businessman, a lawyer, a family man, and a human being he attributes to the relationships he’s forged. “The Lord has blessed me,” he said. “I’ve had a rich and fulfilling life. And

relationships have made it that way. When you treat people right, they have a tendency to tell others about it.” As his campaign builds steam, his emphasis on relationships is bringing him enthusiastic endorsements from all four local police associations—a first for any Arlington mayoral candidate. Arlington Police Association, Arlington Municipal Patrolman’s Association, African American Peace Officers Association of Arlington, and Hispanic Police Officers Association (Amigos en Azul de Arlington) are all backing him for mayor as are the Arlington Professional Fire Fighters Association and others.

COMMUNITY-MINDED Jim is a 40-year Arlington resident, an active member of Compass Church and an ardent supporter of Special Olympics, Inspiring Hope, Boys & Girls Club, The American Heart Association, and other local non-profits. He’s served as chairman of the board for the Arlington Police Foundation and is active with the Arlington Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. And one of his great joys is serving each year as a judge at the Special Needs Beauty Pageant. He was also appointed by the Mayor Jeff Williams and city council to serve on the Economic Recovery Task Force. “I’ve learned throughout my life experiences that it’s not about my accomplishments,” Jim said. “It’s about giving back and lifting up. The people of Arlington has been good to me and I want to give back. That’s why I’m running for mayor. Mayor Williams has done an outstanding job. Now, I want to take this great city to the next level.”

There's something uplifting and blissful about florals — whether they are dainty prints or bright blooms, it's a trend that just won't end. Historically, flowers have spoken their own language. Roses signified true love, orchids were a sign of elegance or wealth, daisy's expressed purity, and sunflowers represented loyalty. The symbolism may have lost its luster over time, but flowers will always tell a story that continuously conforms to the current day and age. The unapologetic print is mostly known for its heavy influence in the '60s and '70s. Think beyond your grandma's wallpaper or your mother 's retro sofa to romantic botanical gowns and blouses that were a staple during these decades. Rarely a season passes by without the influence of retro floral designs on the runways or in our wardrobes. But this season, florals are more significant to our world than ever before. Just like in the era of the Great Depression, the floral print is a breath of life and light into a time of social and economic struggles. Color is our comfort , and florals our freedom. Not only did colorful trends skyrocket during the pandemic, but so did playful patterns. When we can't control what's around us, historically, women tend to find freedom in what they wear. Spring is here and floral designs have sprouted once again. Take a tip from our ancestors and celebrate the season by wearing a print that signifies hope and new beginnings.

Steven Cateron took the reins of Rebecca Taylor ’s design department after 10 years at Club Monaco. His first order of business was to edit and consolidate the collections, bringing Tailored Rebecca Taylor, La Chemise, and La Vie back under the Rebecca umbrella. For his debut collection, Cateron took inspiration from vintage imagery, delicate embroidery, and antique pieces to guide his creative process and convey a new kind of casual elegance. Silhouettes derived from ‘50s couture techniques and elements of ‘70s sensuality feel familiar yet modern. Newness in the form of pleats and plisse add volume and a touch of romantic drama. Set against a backdrop of the city, the new Rebecca celebrates emotion, individualism, and the glorification of the past. Q: What are your goals as the new designer for Rebecca Taylor? A: My intention is to bring a sense of romance to every occasion to get dressed. I aim to apply feminine details to clothes in new ways — and as there have been fewer reasons to put on a dress in the last year, we have imbued in many other garments a more relaxed, less studied sense of femininity and sophistication; it appears throughout in a special knit technique on a sweater, a different shape for a pant , a hand-drawn print on a jumpsuit. There are plenty of ways to convey sensuality with more relaxed clothing. Q: What was the inspiration for your debut collection? A: Spring 2021 is about Art and Romance — nostalgic vintage fashion, art glass, Beaux Arts architecture, magazines from the sixties, an expressive sense of self. It was a collection designed from home, and I think that resonates throughout the collection, the rewarding practice of surrounding oneself with beautiful things. Q: Was there a pivotal moment in your life when you decided you wanted to become a designer? A: The first time I saw my grandma make clothes I was intrigued by how a paper pattern ultimately became a piece. In high school, I took a summer sewing class at a college in Pasadena — the whole class was older ladies — they told me I had a gift for it , said I just knew what to do. Most people in the class made a basic shirt. I made a suit for my grandma, and the ladies in the class told me this was going to be my career. Q: Who inspired your early designs, and who inspires you today? A: The way that my mother styled herself in feminine and romantic clothes to feel good and project confidence as a single working mom of three young boys inspired me then and inspires me now. Q: What are some of your go-to styling practices when it comes to florals? A: I work with a variety of print artists and dealers of vintage textiles, whose work we reference, then work together to reinterpret and often hand-paint as exclusive new designs for us. When approaching a season, my team creates prints that evoke the seasonal message that the customer can also come back to and wear in many different ways. And the base of the fabric is just as important as the artwork itself — that dynamic is something we work hard at to make seamless, but also create a tension between — that way, the end result is not such a literal reiteration of the original art that inspired us. To create depth, we print on jacquard and organza, and we also employ warp printing — that ’s when the yarn is printed before it ’s made into fabric — there are many different ways we look at print.

y husband and I recently enjoyed a trip to Dillon, Colorado where our daughterin-law, Jade, was participating in a professional-style photoshoot. Being from Texas, it ’s easy to forget how majestic the snow-covered mountains are. The world, God’s masterpiece, is absolutely amazing and his attention to detail is mindboggling. Jade and a group of photographers from across the country met for a styled wedding photography shoot with Taylor Olivares of Traveling Weddings. Originally working as a hair and makeup artist, Taylor Olivares learned what goes on behind the scenes of a wedding quickly realizing there’s a huge difference between a wedding planner and a wedding planner/ designer. A wedding design team handles every single detail taking 100% of the stress off not only the bride but both families as well. Taylor ’s company handles both wedding planning and design. Jade Anderson started her business, Peony + Pine Photography, five years ago after the birth of her first daughter. She began trying to capture her daughter candidly throughout the day so she could look back and remember the little things. Little did she realize those little things would turn into big things for her. The joy she experienced looking at her photos helped her create a business that would help others truly love getting their pictures taken as they preserve their own memories forever.

You’re capturing big life moments for people and creating something beautiful for them to remember.” Many of Jade’s clients return year after year as their families grow and change. It ’s one of her favorite perks of the job. Jade herself grew up in Grand Prairie and is currently living the life in Arlington. She says her business vibe can best be described as organized chaos. In addition to her photography business, she works fulltime as a neonatal and pediatric flight nurse at Cook Children’s Hospital. choo!!” Was that the sound of someone sneezing? Given the time of year, it must be the beginning of the spring allergy season in Texas. Of course, it always feels like allergy season in Texas, and experts say that one reason is that our winters are relatively mild compared to, let’s say, North Dakota. So, plants often survive a couple of short-lived freezes and pollenate all year round. Still, spring and fall are the worst times of the year for environmental allergies. According to the Asthma and Allerg y Foundation of America (AAFA), an estimated 54% of Americans suffer from one kind of allergy or another. Allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness. There are food allergies; some people are allergic to certain medications, and others cannot be around a dog or cat without their eyes tearing, nose running, and skin itching. These allergies can be avoided. But environmental allergies present a bigger challenge unless you decide to live in a bubble. These allergies can be simply a nuisance or lead to more health issues. e’ve all found ourselves in conversation with someone and wondered, “How’s my breath?” Of course, the other side of the coin is wondering how the person you’re talking to doesn’t realize they’re breathing dragon breath in your face. Either way, halitosis can be a formula for social embarrassment. What exactly causes bad breath, and what can you do about it? There are a number of possible culprits.

Think of bad breath as any other type of body odor, usually a social problem more than a medical one. If you have B.O., you take a shower. As you clean your body, you reduce the bacteria population under your arm, eliminating the odor. In the same way, brushing and flossing your teeth reduces and scatters the bacteria in your mouth, usually eliminating bad breath. One way to test your breath and see if you have a problem is to take a dry, clean unscented cloth and scrub your tongue as far back as you can for about five seconds. Wait thirty seconds, then smell the cloth. You can also ask your partner or a close

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), 90% of bad breath originates from bacteria on the tongue. Because our tongues consist of tiny hills, valleys, and crevices, it’s the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. If you suffer from chronic nasal drip, bacteria are even more at home. And since bacteria like to congregate at the back of your tongue, it’s important to attack it at its source. Just as you take time to floss and brush your teeth, devote some time to brushing your tongue, as far back as you can tolerate. Invest in a tongue scraper and use it, first thing in the morning and the last thing at night, also as far back as you can stand. Other than that, you can: Be diligent about regular professional cleanings and check-ups.

Drink plenty of liquids.

Chew sugar-free gum.

Use a saline nose spray to break up mucus and moisturize nasal passages. Ask your dentist to recommend an ADA-approved mouthwash. If your dentist determines your teeth and gums aren’t the sources of your bad breath, consult with your primary care doctor to make sure odor isn’t caused by pneumonia or bronchitis, chronic sinus infections, postnasal drip, diabetes, chronic acid reflux, gastrointestinal issues, and liver or kidney problems. Lastly, there are a few home remedies you can try. Gargle with water and either apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, or salt. Or carry a few cloves that you can chew on (but don’t swallow) whenever you’re worried your breath might not score an A+.

Pom-Pom Marigold Garland No-bake Lemon Cheesecake This delicious dessert is the perfect blend of sweet and tangy, and it’s easy with just four ingredients. 16 oz. softened cream cheese 14 oz. condensed milk ⅓ cup lemon juice Zest of 1 lemon divided (leave ⅓ to sprinkle on top for garnish) Mix above ingredients and pour into a premade 10-inch graham cracker crust, top with the remaining lemon zest, and refrigerate a minimum of four hours or until the filling sets.

Give your room a pop of color with this fun, easy craft. It can be used to accentuate wall art, hang from the ceiling, or as a beaded curtain alternative. 1. Trace a circular object onto cardboard, then trace a smaller circle inside it to make a donut. Cut out the large round shape, then cut a slit in the side to cut out the center circle. 2. Wrap yellow yarn around the ring until it is covered. Repeat for a few layers to create a full pom-pom. 3. Snip the yarn around the circle’s outer edge to create a pom-pom that is secured inside the donut hole. 4. Saving for college is also a joint venture. Obviously, a six-year-old cannot get a job. But a prospective college student can find part-time jobs while in high school and while attending college. Students can also apply for academic scholarships, and you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to qualif y. Grant-in-aid is available for those who are financially strapped. And students can apply for college loans.

The groundwork for paying for a college education starts with parents and perhaps contributions from grandparents. Here are some popular options: Texas Tuition Promise Fund: You can lock in the price of tuition today at most Texas Universities. The money is tax-free if used for tuition. Anyone, not just a family member, can contribute, and the limit is $15,000 a year. The contributor or the beneficiary must meet Texas residency requirements. 529 Plans: Accounts owned by dependent students are treated as parent assets, and nothing has to be reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) when the funds are withdrawn to pay for college. Contributions can total $15,000 annually and qualif y for a gift tax exclusion. Funds are considered parental assets. Coverdale Education Savings Account: It is a tax-free plan but limits contributions to $2,000 a year. Deposits have to be made before a student turns 18. Tax-free withdrawals can be used for college or even elementary through high school expenses. Custodial Accounts: These can be set up at most banks. There is no limit on deposits, and a student does not get control of the account until he or she is considered an adult, which is either 18 or 21years old. The money does not have to be used to fund a college education. However, the funds are considered a student asset and subject to the “kiddie tax ” for unearned income over $2,100 annually.

FREDERICKSBURG WILL KICK OFF A Y E A R -L O N G C O M M E M O R AT I O N O F I T S 1 7 5 T H A N N I V E R S A RY I N M AY

troll through Fredericksburg’s Marktplatz Park on historic Main Street, past the Maypole that displays each chapter of the town’s history along its branches, past the octagonal Vereins Kirche building that is a replica of the town’s very first community building, and you will stumble onto a bust of John O. Meusebach. In the mid-1800s, Meusebach was responsible for leading a group of immigrants fleeing Germany’s social, political, and economic conditions that would result in the Revolution of 1848. The group known as the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas wanted to establish a new German settlement within the Lone Star State. After years of preparation, the group landed in Texas in 1844. The group first established themselves in New Braunfels after purchasing 1,265 acres of land for $1,112. On May 6, 1846, Meusebach chose a location 70 miles northwest of New Braunfels near the Pedernales River to be the group’s second Texas settlement. The 10,000-acre settlement was located between the two creeks with an abundance of water, stone, and wood. The 120 original German settlers received a parcel of land in town in addition to 10 acres outside of town. Meusebach named the new settlement Fredericksburg after Prince Frederick of Prussia. Like many pioneer towns, Fredrickburg’s first years were not easy. Disease, Comanche attacks, and drought proved trying for the early settlers. Since its humble beginnings, however, Fredericksburg has grown into a popular tourist destination known as the second most visited wine region in the nation while still holding on tightly to its German roots.

Although the 175th Anniversary Steering Committee has decided to postpone portions of the opening weekend celebration formerly slated for May 2021 and remains committed to following local, state, and national CDC guidelines and recommendations relating to COVID-19 safety, there are still several socially-distanced events starting May 7, 2021. Updated 175th Anniversary Opening Weekend Celebration events include: • “The Art of Fredericksburg: 175 Years” art show featuring more than 60 pieces of original art created by nearly 30 talented artists throughout Fredericksburg’s history will be on display May 8 through September 19, 2021. The free exhibit will take place in the George H.W. Bush Gallery’s temporary exhibit hall at the National Museum of the Pacific War. • Opening Weekend Celebratory Fireworks Show will take place on Friday, May 7, at approximately 9:00 PM at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park.

MORE WAYS TO CELEBRATE To plan a historic weekend in Fredericksburg, start by booking a stay at one of the Sunday Houses around downtown. The original settlers who lived and farmed on large swaths of land surrounding Fredericksburg built one-room homes on their downtown plot of land. These tiny homes became known as Sunday Houses because settlers would use them during the weekend when they came to town to conduct business and attend church. Several of the original Sunday Houses that dot the downtown area are available for short-term rentals. The white-washed, two-bedroom Metzger Sunday House is one of the most popular Sunday Houses for rent. In 1898 the farming family built the tiny home one block away from Main Street. The picturesque home with its hanging swing on a small, covered porch looks like it did when it was built. The outside staircase leading up to an upstairs loft is typical of homes in the time period. Children would sleep in the upstairs loft while their parents slept and cooked downstairs.

Pioneer Museum

The town’s rich history does not end with lodging. The Pioneer Museum provides a glimpse of what life was like for the early settlers and how Fredericksburg evolved into the German-Texan town it is today. 11 historic buildings from the town’s early days make up the outdoor museum. Visitors can walk through one of the town’s original log cabins, a one-room schoolhouse, the town’s first barbershop, and several early Texas homes staged with furniture from the time period. History-loving visitors can also take a tour of St. Mary’s Parish that dates back to 1846 and browse the collection of Gillespie County archives in the replica of the Vereins Kirche. While museums provide important historical context, one of the best ways to explore a region’s culture is through food and drink. Walking around town, visitors will find an abundance of restaurants and biergartens dedicated to preserving the town’s German roots. It is easy to spend a whole day eating German food in Fredericksburg. For breakfast, stop by the Old German Bakery and Restaurant for potato pancakes or a Holstein schnitzel. For lunch or a late afternoon snack, the Auslander in the heart of historic Fredericksburg is a go-to destination. The restaurant specializes in authentic German dishes from the state of Bavaria, which means the menu is full of various types of smoked sausage, schnitzels, and German beer. Otto’s German Bistro just off Main Street uses locally sourced ingredients to create German comfort food like duck schnitzel, German Kassler, and apfelstrudel.

Speaking of beer, finish your celebration by raising a pint of hefeweizen to the town’s history at Altstadt Brewery. The brewery spared no expense when building the Bavarian-inspired biergarten just outside of the historic downtown. Brewers at Altstadt follow the historic German purity law of 1516, which dictates that they only make beer using four ingredients - hops, barley, yeast, and spring water. INGREDIENTS: 3 Tbsp. olive oil | 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar | 1 Tbsp. tarragon | 2 tsp. fresh lemon juice | ¼ tsp. sugar | 3 celery stalks, thinly sliced diagonally, plus ¼ cup loosely packed celery leaves | 2 small fennel bulbs, thinly sliced crosswise, plus 1 Tbsp. chopped fennel fronds | Salt and pepper DIRECTIONS: WHISK the first 5 ingredients in a large bowl and set aside.
