“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness..”

– Lamentation 3:22-23

Welcome to my favorite time of year. How can you not love spring when everything is new and every day holds promise of something better than the one before? I love to stroll around my neighborhood in March because each day it’s noticeably different than the day before as leaves return to trees and flowers push their way up through the earth. Spring sunsets are spectacular, too. It’s refreshing to see and celebrate God’s extravagant love for us.

This is also the time of year when we introduce you to some of the outstanding medical professionals we have living and practicing all around us. North Texas is known worldwide for its medical expertise. People travel to DFW from around the world to be seen and treated by our medical experts. How fortunate we are to have them right here. I hope you enjoy meeting these wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, community leaders, and friends who work to keep us healthy so we can enjoy living in the most wonderful place in the world. And a big thank-you to our local healthcare heroes!

NUMB TO the reality

A CHRISTIAN’S VOYAGE ON THE COSMIC BATTLEFIELD

Dear Christian,

May I remind you of the current reality of your situation?

Right now, as you read these words, you are sitting — or standing — at some minuscule dot on a massive globe of dirt, lava, and water that is somehow suspended in a vast expanse of nothingness we call space. But that globe is not just suspended there; it is also spinning — you are spinning — at speeds that can exceed 1,000 miles per hour. But you, Christian, are not just suspended and spinning on that massive sphere in the vast expanse of nothingness. No, right now, as you rotate upon the axis of that giant orb, you are also charting a course around another, much more massive ball of nuclear energy that just so happens to give you the heat and the light that you need to live,

and breathe, and exist. Yes, in a divine twist of irony — your tiny existence literally revolves around the light — the “Sun.”

May I also remind you that all of this is happening within a galaxy that contains more than 5,000 other floating spheres of matter like yours. And your galaxy exists within a universe that contains an estimated 2 trillion other galaxies. And then, to top it all off, that universe you so humbly exist in is, at this very moment, infinitely expanding in all directions. Yes, Christian, you are a tiny, microscopic creature that exists on what is actually a relatively small ball of matter, doing laps around a slightly larger ball of energy and light in a constantly expanding universe. That is the current reality of your situation. But that is not the whole reality. There is more to your situation .

14 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | march 2024 community | FRUIT OF THE VINE

Within this universe exists something called “time.” And there was a time — an eternity, in fact — when you did not exist. You were nothing – for an eternity. And then, in the twinkle of an eye, there you were. You were something. You had life! You now existed — within time — spinning in nothingness in that constantly expanding universe. You lived and breathed. You ate and drank. You grew, and learned, and spoke. Your eternal story had begun!

Then, one day, as you were living, breathing, and walking upon your orb of spinning dirt in that vast expanse of nothingness, you received a message. It was unexpected. A Being — from outside of time itself — outside of your nothingness — spoke to you! He had a message for you! He gave you the message on ancient scrolls that had somehow been preserved for thousands of years. The scrolls said that He was their Author, and the message they contained told a story. But not just any story. A story that He wrote. A story of infinite importance. A story that would echo through all of eternity. It was the story of your current reality.

The story begins by telling you about the One who commanded your universe into existence. He simply said, “Let there be …,” and there it was. For eternities before, a universe was not there, and then it was — in the palm of His hand — as if it were nothing but a grain of sand, a droplet of water. The scrolls said He had no beginning and will have no end; He simply was — and is — and is to come.

The message went on to say that your parents, from many generations past, were loved by this eternal Being. They walked with Him in a magical Garden, in perfect communion. But your parents made a grave mistake. There was an enemy in that Garden they were supposed to conquer and rule over; instead, though, your parents were deceived by him. They were tricked into rebellion against the One who loved them. They sided with the enemy. They became traitors. A cosmic kidnapping had taken place. Upon this giant ball of dirt, floating and spinning in the expanse of nothingness, a celestial war had begun. The Earth had become a battlefield.

The scrolls said that, upon their decision to rebel, your parents were afflicted with a great disease called “sin.” This disease and their rebellion would result in their eternal execution. The scrolls said that they had passed this disease along to you! You realized that the Earth had become not only a battleground but also a holding cell, where all men and women, including you, existed for a short time before they stepped into the eternal courtroom to receive their sentence. The story said that you were condemned! You were doomed! But the story of the scrolls was not over.

The scrolls spoke of a Man who walked the Earth 2,000 years before you. You had heard of this Man before. He was a Man whose life was so prolific that men decided to divide all of time itself according to when He arrived. The scrolls said that He was … The One. The scrolls said that this One took upon Himself the punishment for your and your parents’ crimes. They said that He was the cure for your disease. They said that if you believed in who this Man was and what

He did, you would be rescued from your eternal execution. You would be set free from your holding cell. You believed! You were set free! But there was more … The scrolls say that right now, as you are reading these words and doing your rotations in your constantly expanding universe, there is another realm right in front of you — all around you; it is a dimension you are blinded to. Should this surprise you? No! Remember, you are a tiny and diseased creature that once didn’t exist. In this other dimension, that cosmic war that began thousands of years ago is still raging! In this other realm — all around you — diabolical creatures, filled with hate and a terror no mortal mind could ever fathom, are warring night and day, seeking to devour the souls of your loved ones. These beings are somehow interacting with and influencing the reality you exist within. They have only one goal: to keep men from receiving and believing the message contained within the ancient scrolls. The scrolls say that you have been enlisted as a soldier in this eternal cosmic war and that you have been given a task: to get the message of the scrolls to all those who are still doomed.

The ancient writings say that the time is very short. In only a few moments, the great war will be over. The One who had no beginning and will have no end will peel back the fabric of time and descend upon this spinning orb of dirt and lava and water that He once commanded into existence. His armies will follow behind. Vengeance and wrath will be executed on all His enemies. In just a few short moments, all mankind — your family, your children, your friends — will cross the threshold and enter the divine courtroom. In only a few moments, they will stand before the throne of Almighty God. There will be only two verdicts:

The ones who heard and believed the message contained in the ancient scrolls will go on to the land of the living, to an existence outside of time, where every moment becomes more joyous than the one before it. They will be given new bodies, capable of dwelling in the presence of the uncreated Being. They will exist in infinite glory, communing with Him, for all of eternity to come.

But the ones who did not believe the message in the scrolls would be sentenced to eternal execution, cast into the outer darkness. They, too, will exist in a place outside of time, but in their place, each moment will become more hopeless than the one before it. They, too, will be given new bodies, but they will be bodies that are capable of enduring the divine wrath of the uncreated Being for all of eternity to come. My Christian friend, are you currently weighted down with the anxiety of some trivial matter pertaining to these few short moments during which you exist on this tiny ball of dirt that floats in the nothingness? Maybe you even find yourself tempted to think of the Christian life as “boring” at times. If so, please remember, this is the story you say that you believe! This is your current reality!

“ A BEAUTIFUL, HEALTHY SMILE TRANSLATES INTO HAPPINESS, INVITES COMMUNICATION, AND OPENS THE DOOR TO SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT. MY GOAL IS TO PROVIDE MY PATIENTS WITH EXCEPTIONAL TREATMENT AND SERVICE DELIVERED WITH GENUINE WARMTH AND PROFESSIONALISM. I VALUE YOUR TRUST AND WILL DO EVERYTHING IN MY POWER TO CONTINUE TO EARN IT.”

HILDEBRAND ORTHODONTICS

It’s a normal day at Hildebrand Orthodontics, and the place is hopping.

The sun-filled, beach-themed office is fi lled with the happy sounds of patients chatting with their favorite orthodontic team. Drs. Jed Hildebrand and Lena Bortnem move from chair-to-chair greeting patients and their parents by name as they catch up on school activities, sports team records, and who’s planting what in their gardens this year as they provide highly personalized and tailored orthodontic treatment.

Those patients aren’t all kids either. In fact, about half of Hildebrand Orthodontics patients are adults. Some saw the results their child received from orthodontic treatment and realized what it could do for them. Others never had braces, or had them and experienced some minor shifting they’d like to have corrected. There’s something for everyone at this hometown practice. Unlike “big-box”

orthodontic practices, patients see Dr. Jed or Dr. Lena at every visit.

For more than 40 years, Arlington has trusted Hildebrand Orthodontics as the expert in smiles and as the go-to place for the latest in orthodontic care in a fun, friendly environment. As a leader in the industry, Dr. Jed has pioneered much of the new technology that straightens teeth faster, simpler, and more discretely than ever before. “You can straighten your teeth, often in about a year, and nobody has to know you’re in treatment,” he said.

CLEAR TOOTH ALIGNERS

Invisalign clear tooth aligners can treat a wide range of misalignment conditions including crossbites, crowding, open bites, gapped teeth, overbites, and underbites,” Dr. Lena informs. “You can take your aligners out when you eat or for special occasions and, because they’re clear, most people won’t even know you’re

wearing them.” And thanks to nextgeneration digital scanning, you can see how your new smile will look before treatment even begins. Every treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s exact anatomy for the best outcome and stable results, all at affordable family prices.

LATEST ORTHODONTIC SCIENCE

Hildebrand Orthodontics also offers the latest, cutting-edge technology in hightech flexible wires which respond to the temperature of the mouth to straighten teeth faster than ever before and with far less discomfort to patients. “No more tightening of braces and no more bands on back teeth,” Dr. Hildebrand said. “That means far less risk of cavities. We’re also using the new mini braces, the smallest braces on the market—50% smaller than traditional braces—that decrease treatment time by six months.”

MEET DR. LENA

Graduating summa cum laude, Dr. Lena Bortnem received her Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in chemistry from Chapman University in May of 2014. As a peer-tutor, she took pride in creating presentations and lecturing students in dental anatomy, physiology, pre-clinical techniques and more. In 2019, she passed the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) certifi cation and currently is a diplomat of the board (who’s duty is to uphold the highest standard of care for the orthodontic specialty for the purpose of protecting the public). Following her completion of residency, she led multiple orthodontic teams in Northern California, providing beautiful functional smiles to her patients. Her substantial experience

“A beautiful, healthy smile translates into happiness, invites communication, and opens the door to success and fulfillment,” Dr. Lena said. “My goal is to provide my patients with exceptional treatment and service delivered with genuine warmth and professionalism. I value your trust and will do everything in my power to continue to earn it.”

Dr. Lena’s devotion to giving back and making a difference has kept her involved in charity organizations. She has aided in dental treatments and provided prevention education to 200+ people with the Global Medical Training Organization in Nicaragua. During her Great Shape 1000 Smiles Dental Mission trip in Jamaica, Dr. Lena provided cleanings, fi llings, extractions, and more to the underserved population. She has also volunteered multiple times at CDA Cares which is a volunteer-powered event providing dental services at no charge to individuals in need. MEET DR. JED

Jed Hildebrand grew up in the Dallas/ Arlington area and now raises his own children there, even treating them with braces and Invisalign at ages seven and nine. Dr. Jed loves chatting with his patients about whatever they’re passionate about reminiscent of his own orthodontist taking an interest in his sports. (He won state championships in both football and soccer his senior year of high school.) Having also played soccer for Baylor University, while working on his Bachelor of Science in biology, he understands the importance of teamwork in sports—and in his practice. He enjoys speaking at churches about his experience as a contestant on “Survivor” on CBS imparting lessons such as “love your neighbor as yourself” and “be true to yourself and kind to others”.

Dr. Hildebrand enjoys participating in Christian dental missionary work in Mexico and has served in dental clinics in Cambodia, India, and Thailand and soon in impoverished parts of Jamaica on a dental mission trip with 10 fellow dentists in his MB2 dental group. “The gratitude and thankfulness on patients’ faces brings me more peace and joy than any other experience in the world”.

Dr. Jed received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Texas A&M College of Dentistry and completed a two-and-ahalf-year orthodontic residency program to become a specialist in orthodontics with a Masters in Science. Dr. Jed and his wife, fellow dentist, Dr. Kim Hildebrand, enjoy life with son, Kai, and daughter, Liv. He enjoys motorcycling, wakeboarding, surfing, and soccer, cheering Kai’s lacrosse travel team, and watching Liv cheer. Both kids have completed a Phase 1 of orthodontic care to create room for their permanent teeth in keeping with the philosophy of treating problems earlier to achieve a better, more esthetic smile that lasts a lifetime. Hildebrand Orthodontics sees kids starting at age six for a free initial consultations.

Designing with Natural Materials and Elements

Natural is in, including using natural materials and elements in interior design. Versatile and appealing, they fit with almost any style, from cozy boho and comfortable transitional to minimalist or relaxed opulence. Below are a few ideas to kick-start your creativity and find new ways to enhance your home with wood, stone, and organic fibers.

WOOD: Using rough-cut and reclaimed wood remains popular, but don’t shy away from finished wooden pieces. Place a low, polished live edge bench at the end of a bed instead of an upholstered piece by the fireplace, or use it as a coffee table instead of a large, tufted ottoman.

Another way to use finished wood is with a gorgeous hardwood dining table. If you’re into sustainability, find one you like at a consignment shop or an estate sale. The wood you select depends on the look you’re going for. Mahogany, for example, is luxurious and elegant. Walnut, known for its vibrant, rich color, has tight grains, often with swirls and wave patterns. Maple is light-colored with a smooth, even grain unless you splurge for birds-eye maple, which has swirling eyes within smooth grain lines. Soften it and add color, if you wish, with upholstered chairs.

And remember hardwood flooring. Sure, luxury vinyl that simulates wood is a popular choice for its ease of maintenance and durability, but there’s nothing like the eye-catching appeal of real hardwood floors.

STONE: Timeless and often breathtaking, stone is one of the easiest ways to add natural materials to your home décor. The options are almost limitless. Flooring, countertops, backsplashes, vases, wall cladding, fireplace mantels, shower surrounds, lamps, candle holders, coffee tables, sculptures — and the list goes on.

As with wood, the type of stone you select depends on the aesthetic you’re going for. It also depends on where you’re going to use it. Sedimentary stones such as limestone, sandstone, and travertine tend to be more porous and softer. Metamorphic stones like marble, quartzite, and slate are harder than sedimentary stone. Granite, which is volcanic in origin, is one of the hardest natural materials on earth.

If you have the option, choosing your own stone slabs puts the control in your hands, and you’ll know what the finished product should look like.

ORGANIC FIBERS: Natural fiber fabrics and décor accessories complement styles like modern farmhouse and add elegant comfort to virtually any living space, regardless of the style. Fabrics made from cotton, wool, jute, and sisal add warmth, softness, and texture to your home. Linen especially pairs well with minimalist design.

Choose natural fibers for throws and pillows coverings, rugs, upholstered ottomans and benches, and wall art, such as a grouping of sisal trays or shallow baskets. Or make a bold, beautiful statement with a striking mohair velvet sectional sofa. (Mohair velvet is a plush, durable upholstery fabric made from wool shorn from Angora goats.)

CONNECTIONS WELLNESS GROUP

A Blended Health Company

Mental health continues to be a hotbutton topic, and the comforting news is that North Texas residents and their loved ones are supported by a seemingly limitless list of mental health service providers. One of those providers, Connections Wellness Group, recently took its innovative continuity of care model to the next level.

Starting with one location in Denton in 2018, the growing provider of behavioral and mental health services now has 18 clinics across Texas and Tennessee, with plans to add more locations in 2024 under a newly formed platform company, Blended Health. The group announced it has merged with Integrated Addiction Care and Vertava Health of Tennessee and will now be known as Blended Health. Blended Health will continue to operate in Texas under the consumer-facing brand Connections Wellness Group – A Blended Health Company.

“The creation of Blended Health will directly benefit our patients’ journeys to health and well-being,” said Dr. Debra Atkisson, divisional medical director. “This merger creates flexible, high-quality, and accessible behavioral health care for adolescents and adults, connecting them with clinicians who will support them in living their best lives.”

Blended health will also primarily emphasize group services consisting of

partial hospitalization programs (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP). Regional Executive Director Shanna Dugan added, “By expanding access to outpatient behavioral health care, we can create a healthier society. Blended Health will do just that, through the provision of innovative and flexible care, making a lasting impact on the lives of our patients, their loved ones, and their communities.”

MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT IS VITAL

Many Americans experiencing mental health challenges seeking treatment wait up to three months to receive treatment, and fewer than 50% of adults and 70% of adolescents experiencing mental challenges receive treatment. That’s where Connections Wellness Group is changing the mental health care wheel. The idea is that with one phone call, a patient can receive comprehensive mental health services for depression, anxiety, thoughts of suicide, substance abuse, and anything that impacts how they think, feel, and act.

Once someone asks for help, they should never be turned away due to long wait lists, prohibitive costs, or services that don’t meet their needs. The localized IOP and PHP programs provide access and can help avoid and prevent crises and reduce the medical costs incurred by local hospital

emergency rooms. This allows for a more intensive therapy option from traditional mental health care and a local step down from inpatient care. Programs are offered during both the day and evening.

A ROBUST TEAM

Blended Health employs one of the largest teams with over 400 team members, including more than 300 medical psychiatrists, psychiatric physician assistants, advanced psychiatric nurse practitioners, and licensed clinical therapists, offering onsite and virtual treatment in medication management and group and individual therapy.

Making lasting improvements in a person’s mental health requires the assistance of trained professionals. If you or a family member is struggling with mental health, don’t wait to ask for help.

INSTITUTE FOR HORMONAL BALANCE

Mandy Cotten has a vision for the men and women of the Arlington, Mansfi eld, & DFW area. She wants them to live happier and age healthier. And she’d like to be their partner in this health journey as she provides full-body wellness care and education. One way she does this is through bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) at Institute for Hormonal Balance.

“Hormone imbalance affects women and men, and both can experience dramatic symptom relief with BHRT,” said Mandy, a hormone expert. “Men and women develop hormonal imbalances at every age and for many reasons, including stress, nutritional deficiencies, obesity, autoimmune diseases, and conditions affecting their hormoneproducing glands. Hormone therapy with IHB involves personalized treatment for restoring optimal hormone levels.”

The majority of people seek BHRT when their levels of estrogen and/or testosterone start causing them symptoms that affect their daily lives. “Low estrogen and testosterone have a widespread impact on nearly every part of your body — problems that can be prevented or treated with BHRT.” In women these symptoms can look like hot flashes and night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, loss of sex drive, painful intercourse, urinary incontinence, memory problems, dry skin, hair loss, insomnia, weight gain, and depression. Testosterone and estrogen are also essential for maintaining strong bones, making women vulnerable to osteoporosis after menopause and good cardiac blood fl ow, making menopausal women at increased risk for heart disease.

Low testosterone levels in men often result in low energy, loss of sex drive, erectile dysfunction (ED), loss of muscle mass, loss of body and beard hair, weight gain, insomnia, memory loss, diffi culty

concentrating, depression, and anxiety. Now for the good news. “BHRT uses hormones from sources that are natural with the ability to closely match the chemical makeup of your own hormones so you can return to your vibrant life again,” Mandy said. Because they mimic your own natural hormones, BHRT enters your body, goes directly to the receptor site, and achieves the desired results.

BHRT can be tailored to your specifi c needs and administered through your choice of creams, patches, pills, or pellets. “We recommend pellets because they maintain a better balance by delivering a steady level of hormones directly into the blood stream,” Mandy said. Mandy herself has performed almost 30,000 pellet procedures over the last 10 years. With this therapy, her patients experience balanced moods, improved sleep, reduced brain fog, decreased hot fl ashes, decreased vaginal dryness, increased stamina, increased muscle mass, decreased fat mass, and increased libido, typically noticing an improvement in seven-to-10 days!

Mandy completed her Bachelor of Science in Psychology and her Bachelor of Science of Nursing (BSN) both from Texas

Christian University, and her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Loyola University in New Orleans, and is certifi ed through the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). She was the clinical director for BioTE Medical for 8 years and has trained over 4,000 other providers in hormone optimization.

When not on the job, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Casey, and their children Rylie & Ashton. Find out more about the Institute for Hormonal Balance at Donovitz.com.

MANSFIELD FAMILY DENTISTRY

Mansfi eld Family Dentistry was built on relationships. It all began in the early 80s, when Dr. John Bauer and his wife, Terri, decided Mansfield Texas—a place that had always felt like home—was the perfect place to settle down, raise their family, and open their family dental practice. Over the next four decades, the Bauers watched their kids grow up and begin families of their own even as they partnered with the families of Greater Mansfi eld providing them with a dental home for all their restorative and cosmetic dentistry needs. They were even blessed to welcome their son, Dr. Cody Bauer, into the practice. Together they’ve participated in—even pioneered—dental advancements that have made dentistry gentler, more artistic, and far more precise.

MANSFIELD’S DENTAL HOME

One particular joy has been welcoming patients they treated as children as they bring their own children to Mansfi eld Family Dentistry. They’re now treating three generations of many families offering them everything from simple cleanings and filling to advanced cosmetic procedures including teeth straightening

and full-mouth makeovers. Once a family is comfortable under their care, there’s no need for them to be referred elsewhere for special services.

ONE-STOP-SHOP

All the dental care they need can be found under this one roof. “When we realize, during a routine check-up, for instance, that a patient needs a root canal, tooth extraction, or dental implant or when they inquire about a cosmetic procedure, we don’t want to refer them out to an unfamiliar dental practice,” Dr. John said. “Cody and I have undertaken hundreds of hours of continuing education every year and investing in the latest, cutting-edge dental technology, so we can provide our patients with cosmetic procedures such as tooth whitening, porcelain veneers, inlays, onlays, Invisalign clear braces, and permanent dental implants, right here in their dental home.”

Dr. John and Dr. Cody place an emphasis on patient education. “We take seriously our job to provide each patient with the tools they need for a lifetime of vibrant oral health,” Dr. Cody said. “It’s not just about the health of your teeth but your

overall health, as links have been made between oral health and the health of the rest of the body and the chance of developing heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and other serious illnesses. Oral health is about more than beautiful teeth.”

“There’s nothing more rewarding to us than building relationships with our patients and being able to watch them grow, from before they lose their baby teeth to the day they bring their own kids in to see us,” Dr. John said. “Cody, Terri, and I along with our dynamic team of dental assistants and dental hygienists want every patient we see to feel like a member of our family because that’s what they are to us.” If you’re searching for a true dental home for your family, find out more at Mansfi eldDentistry.com.

METHODIST ORTHOPAEDIC SURGICAL ASSOCIATES

When Josefina Ortiz’s began experiencing pain in her shoulder, she thought she could soldier through it. She tried physical therapy, but the pain got worse. Soon she couldn’t raise or move her arm, couldn’t drive, couldn’t dress herself, and couldn’t sleep at night. Her PT recommended Methodist Orthopaedic Surgical Associates and Josefina scheduled shoulder surgery.

Two months post-surgery, she was independent again, feeling great, sleeping nights, and able to play with her precious granddaughter again.

Josefina is just one of thousands of patients who’ve gotten their quality of life back thanks to “The Bone Docs”, John Harris and Edward Mairura. While they share the goal of getting patients of all ages back to living the life they love as quickly and safely as possible, the two men took different paths to their orthopaedic medicine career.

Edward Mairura had he fi rst experience with orthopaedics while accompanying his uncle to Mayo Clinic for treatment for osteosarcoma of the pelvis. “I met his treating orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Michael Yaszemski, and was intrigued by his level of compassion for my family, knowledge, bedside manner, and communication skills,” Dr. Mairura said “Dr. Yaszemski offered me the opportunity to work in his lab performing research. I knew I

wanted to one day help people the way Dr. Yaszemski had helped my uncle.”

John Harris knew he wanted to practice medicine, to “help change people’s lives with new and exciting medical technology”. But it actually was an interest in woodworking, during his med school years, that sparks his interest in orthopaedics. “I fell in love with orthopaedics from the first case I saw that involved drills, screwdrivers, and tools just like the ones I used in my garage. It was fascinating, and I was hooked,” he said.

Dr. Mairura performs general orthopaedic surgery with a special interest in trauma, total knee replacements, anterior hip replacements, arthroscopic treatment of the knee, carpal tunnel, and trigger fingers. “I love listening to my patients’ needs and providing them with the best evidencebased options that maximize non-surgical treatment, considering surgery only after exploring all other options.”

While he is fellowship trained in sports and arthroscopy, Dr. Harris enjoys performing shoulder and knee replacements, fractures “from top to bottom” and especially knee and shoulder arthroscopy, and treating injuries such as ACL and meniscus tears, rotator cuff injuries and shoulder dislocations.

“We aim to show Christ’s love in all we do, and hopefully, help point patients back to God, to show His love and mercy in the

tough times and give Him all the glory for the good outcomes,” Dr. Harris said. Methodist Orthopaedic Surgical Associates is owned and operated by MedHealth/Methodist Medical Group and staffed by independently practicing physicians who are employees of MedHealth/Methodist Medical Group. The physicians and staff who provide services at these sites are not employees or agents of Methodist Health System or any of its affiliated hospitals.

DIVINETOUCH MEDICAL CENTER

Dr. Tomi Ola-Peters has a passion for empowering her patients to make healthy lifestyle choices. “It’s only when I slow down and really listen to my patients that I can truly understand their priorities and challenges, partner with them, and make a positive impact on their lives,” she said. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time working at Methodist Mansfi eld Medical Center, as it provides compassionate and excellent care and I enjoyed the staff comradery.

But I’ve always held a dream of starting my own private practice.”

As it did for many of us, the COVID pandemic offered Dr. Ola-Peters a catalyst to reconsider where she was in her career and where she’d like to be. “While I loved my seven years as a hospital physician, I frequently offered services to patients I wanted to continue to assist in improving their health, but I never saw them again.”

Through a private practice, Dr. Ola-Peters knew she could forge deeper patient/ doctor relationships that could last for years. And that’s exactly what she’s done.

She took a gargantuan leap of faith in 2023 founding DivineTouch Medical Center with the mission of delivering exceptional healthcare while empowering individuals to embrace a healthy lifestyle and practice self-care for improved well-being. Through her internal-medicine primarycare clinic she works in collaboration with patients to create and execute customized wellness plans that enhance their quality of life. It’s proactive health management that’s easily accessible, reasonably priced, and convenient—but first and foremost compassionate.

It’s been a journey transitioning from the hospital setting to a private practice. But for Dr. Ola-Peters it’s a privilege to serve her patients and community as their primary care physician, to integrate lifestyle

changes into the prevention, treatment, and management of chronic conditions.

“I’m grateful to God for the opportunity to serve my community, and I’m excited about what He has in store for me in the coming years,” she said. If you’re in need of a primary care doctor, contact DivineTouch Medical Center at (682) 422-9950 for sick visits, preventive care, physical exams, wellness tests, allergy treatments, chronic disease management and weight management.

Dr. Ola-Peters completed her postgraduate certificate in public health at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth and an internal medicine residency at The University of Tyler Health Science Center. She worked in outpatient and inpatient medical centers at Good Shepherd Medical Center Longview, John Peter Smith Hospital, and Methodist Mansfield Medical Center. Now at her private practice, she combines 16 years of medical experience with a compassionate “bedside manner”

and a friendly, family-like rapport with her patients.

When not on the job, Dr. Ola-Peters enjoys gardening, music, and spending time with family. She also serves as an adjunct associate professor at TCU School of Medicine mentoring the next generation of healthcare providers and volunteers in the children’s ministry at her church. NORTH TEXAS NEUROSURGICAL CONSULTANTS

Perhaps Jacob Rosenstein was destined to become an award-winning neurosurgeon. The son of a gifted tailor, he absorbed lessons during his formative years about hard work, hand-eye coordination, and how to visualize in three dimensions and then manifest it into existence. Born in Ukraine, he immigrated to Bronx, NY and quickly earned a spot at the prestigious Bronx High School of Science, famed alma mater to eight Nobel laureates.

This early academia set the stage for equally notable achievements including a medical degree from renown Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a residency and formal training in neurological surgery at U.T. Southwestern Medical Center/Parkland Hospital where he treated patients in the same ER trauma room where President Kennedy was attended in his fi nal moments.

Dr. Rosenstein next embarked on a neurosurgery fellowship at the National Hospital for Nervious Diseases at Queen's Square in London before returning to Texas in 1985 where he has pioneered excellence in neurosurgery for three decades and founded North Texas Neurosurgical Consultants. With over 40 years of experience under his belt and the vast amount of knowledge that brings, Dr. Rosenstein now provides a comprehensive

range of treatment options for both surgical and non-surgical cases. He specializes in managing a wide range of conditions, from minor sprains to intricate spine disorders. His expertise lies in treating spinal issues such as complex spine and spinal fusion procedures, diagnosing, and addressing spine-related disorders, and utilizing minimally invasive techniques. He also provides care for patients with compressive peripheral nerve conditions like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow.

With his formative lessons in precision and attention to detail, Dr. Rosenstein has garnered a reputation for taking on complex cases, planning for them like Tom Brady plans for the super bowl! Because each patient is unique, Dr. Rosenstein and his team undertake extensive imaging and spend time with each patient to truly understand their condition and how it’s limiting their lives.

The same care and gentle approach required when operating so close to the human spine is the hallmark of his rapport with his patients during the pre-operative stage. He places an emphasis on patient empowerment, truly partnering with the patient, educating them about the surgical and non-surgical options that will best service them, involving them in all

decision making, and tailoring a treatment plan that’s unique to each patient.

Even with his four decades of experience and stellar reputation, Dr. Rosenstein is diligent about continuing education, routinely logging over and above the number of hours required with the goal of continuing to hone his surgical skill and knowledge. And it’s not only in medical training that he’s seeking to improve and advance. His commitment to his own health and fi tness led him to fi nd the Southwest Age Intervention Institute where he empowers others to achieve the astonishing wellness and fitness he’s found, even at the end of his sixth decade. These engaging free educational videos cover topics such as:

• The main toxic food sources that reduce bacterial diversity

• How to increase microbiome diversity

• Benefits of a healthy microbiome

• How to use the power of whole food and the microbiome to improve your mental clarity and GI function

TEXAS CENTER FOR UROLOGY

During his years as a urologist, Dr. James Kelley has witnessed—and participated in— some astounding medical advancements. Even as he has, he never wants to forget the basic principles that have made all the difference in his practice: truly listening to his patients, taking time to educate them about their condition, and never forgetting what it felt like to be a patient.

As a young man, James witnessed firsthand the difference a kind and caring doctor can make, when a hip disorder landed him in a wheelchair for two years followed by a complete hip replacement at age 21. “My goal is to provide my patients with a patient-centered approach to their urologic care, treating them as a whole person rather than just a disorder, diagnosis, or problem,” he said. “Patients tell me I’m easy to talk to. They feel like things were explained in ways they can understand. Certainly, that began with me being a patient first and a doctor second.”

PATIENT ADVOCATE

Dr. Kelley takes seriously his role as patient educator. “No two patients are exactly the same,” he said. “I like to spend as much time as I can with each patient until they feel comfortable with their treatment plan going forward. I want them to know they have a voice in making

decisions about their own care. That can only happen if I take the time to first listen to them then guide them toward the best options for them.

Urology has been the perfect specialty for Dr. Kelley. “It’s a rapidly advancing fi eld where I can follow my patients for years,” he said. “And I’m able to treat problems that greatly improve my patients' quality of life. My goal is to treat every patient like a member of my family. They can rest assured any treatment options I discuss I’d also recommend to my family and friends.”

As his practice has evolved and his patient base has grown, Dr. Kelley fi nds himself placing an emphasis on minimally invasive and innovative benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH/enlarged prostate) procedures for men and female urinary problems such as overactive bladder and incontinence. He offers many minimally invasive techniques and procedures with minimal recovery times.

In his free time, Dr. Kelley is a member of the Mansfi eld Chamber of Commerce where he participates in patient education events to help spread awareness regarding men's health issues. There’s no doubt where his inspiration comes from though. “I’m most passionate about my family,” he said. “My beautiful wife, three

daughters, and extended family are the most important things in the world to me. They’re the reason for everything I do.”

BACK 2 WELLNESS CHIROPRACTIC

Dr. Michael C Bank believes an informed patient is a healthier patient. At his Back 2 Wellness Chiropractic practice, he empowers patients to take their best health into their own hands. Dr. Bank was fi rst exposed to the idea of chiropractic care when he worked as a school athletic trainer alongside the team doctor who was a chiropractor. “He invited me work with him over the summer,” Dr. Bank said. “I saw people come in hurt and leave happy. But it wasn’t until I was injured myself, separating a rib from my spine which caused excruciating pain, that I had my fi rst adjustment.” With the relief that adjustment provided came a realization— chiropractic was what Michael wanted to do with his life.

In this day of big-box corporate medical practices where it’s easy to feel overlooked or like a condition rather than a whole person, Dr. Bank and his team offer knowyou-by-name care and leading-edge chiropractic science within a medical home where patients play an active part of their own care.

With a special interest in sports medicine, Dr. Michael Bank says his favorite part of the job is getting to know his patients,

taking his time to really listen, educate, advise, and offer them a healthcare partner on their wellness journey. Here’s what some of those patients wrote in fivestar online reviews.

“I truly believe Dr. Banks has kept me off the surgical table. I come in once a week for e-stem, adjustment, and decompression. My herniated disk has shown almost complete healing on my most recent MRI.”

- Kristin H.

“Dr. Banks takes detailed notes, spends the time to explain his adjustments, treatment plan, whatever you may need. No one makes spinal manipulations as consistent and thorough. I left my appointment thinking, ‘"Oh, wow! This must be what it’s like to have a normal, healthy back.”

- Patrick S.

“Dr. Bank is awesome and very knowledgeable. Staff is nothing short of amazing! Best chiro in the metroplex for sure!!”

- Sarah E.

“I want to do everything humanly possible to make my patients feel better and

allow them to live life to the fullest,” Dr. Banks said. “I’m blessed with a team who shares that vision. I’m also blessed that team includes my wife, two sisters-inlaw, and a staff that’s become like family to me. They make the offi ce warm and welcoming and take the same obsessive approach I do in making sure our patients get well and enjoy an amazing chiropractic experience,” he said.

After completing his bachelors and master’s degree, Dr. Banks earned his doctorate in chiropractic and post graduate certification in brain traumatology and whiplash injuries from the Spine Research Institute of San Diego. When not on the job, he enjoys working out, spending time with his family, and volunteering as a YMCA coach. Fine out more at BankChiropractic.com

WATER OAK FOOT AND ANKLE

When Dr. Matthew McCabe established his podiatry practice, he was eager to give to his patients and help them return to the things and people they love. But he had no idea just how much those patients would give to him. A special shelf in his office bears witness to some of the special doctor/patient relationships he’s forged, over the years. That shelf includes a cap from the USS Kitty Hawk, an autographed biography written by one of his patients, metals, accommodations, commemorative coins, and other mementos each one representing a friendship, a life well lived, and a family he’s been able to touch through caring for their loved one.

At a time when many medical practices can feel like a revolving door, Dr. McCabe and his staff take time getting to know their patients and not just treating their problem but educating them about it so they can be their own best healthcare advocate.

Dr. McCabe treats men, women, and children suffering with conditions of the foot and ankle including bunions, heel pain, plantar fasciitis, diabetic neuropathy and diabetic wounds, fl at feet, neuromas, hammertoes, and Achilles tendonitis.

“These are conditions that can affect

quality of life and productivity,” Dr. McCabe said. “We handle cases as complicated as total ankle replacement and as simple as toenail fungus always beginning with the most conservative treatment option then progress if we need to.”

PERIPHERAL DIABETIC NEUROPATHY

Diabetic neuropathy is a type of nerve damage which most often affects the legs and feet of those with diabetes. Symptoms can be mild or can be painful, debilitating, and in rare cases even fatal. “I see many patients who’ve been being misdiagnosed or given medication which doesn’t help their condition,” Dr. McCabe said. “But there are oral medications and topical ones that are highly effective in offering relief. Let’s take a new look at your diabetic foot pain. A simple preventative diabetic foot exam can evaluate your overall health, your diabetes, and identify problems that could arise related to your feet—ideally before they occur.” Most insurance companies— including Medicare and Medicaid—cover these preventative exams.

MEET DR. MCCABE

Matthew McCabe is fellowship trained in limb salvage, reconstructive surgery, and orthoplastics (a fi eld that combines plastics techniques and orthopedic

techniques with the goal of salvaging limbs after trauma or chronic wounds and infection). Even so, he considers surgery a last resort only after all non-surgical options have been explored.

Whether your complaint is heel pain, foot and ankle pain, arthritis, foot fractures, ankle fractures, bunion deformities, Achilles tendon issues, or something else, Dr. McCabe and his team will offer you options tailored to your individual needs. “The more patients understand about their condition and all the treatment options available to them, the better decisions they can make about their care,” Dr. McCabe said.

CITYVIEW AUDIOLOGY

& HEARING AIDS, INC.

It should have been no surprise to Diane Blaising’s family when she found her calling helping others live a better life through improved hearing. Way back in elementary school, it was a young Diane who wowed her classmates with a science project demonstrating bone-conduction hearing.

“This was back when we had portable record players,” she says. “I took the record player to school, and instead of using the needle on the record, I had a sewing needle stuck into a pencil eraser. We’d hold the wooden end of the pencil between our teeth and place the needle on the turning record and could hear the record through our teeth and bones in our skulls. It’s not coming through your ear canals. It’s bone-conduction hearing.”

The workings of the human auditory system haven’t ceased to amaze Diane. Now, as a board-certified doctor of audiology, she’s discovered she likes the human side of audiology even more than the medical/science side. “I love the patient contact and making a difference in the lives of my patients the most,” she says. After more than 32 years serving as an audiologist, the last 20 with her own practice, Dr.Blaising provides a source for total hearing care. “I want my office to serve as a resource center for everything hearing,” she says. “I opened Cityview Audiology & Hearing Aids because I wanted to do more for my patients. For instance, we offer a free aural rehab class for anyone who wants to learn coping strategies for people with hearing loss and their families. Sometimes family members need a little education about how to communicate with the one with hearing diffi culties.”

Dr. Blaising says, “Our entire team joins me in our mission to help our patients obtain a better quality of life by enhancing their ability to communicate with family

and friends, leading to deeper, more meaningful relationships,” she says. “We love helping working men and women be more successful in their careers. We love helping grandparents have better communication with their grandchildren. We live in a time when hearing aid technology is extremely sophisticated, and we have the ability to treat any hearing loss successfully. Every patient is different. So we stay abreast of advancements in the programming software that allows us to correctly fit hearing instruments to each unique hearing loss.”

“Research is out now that proves hearing loss is a major contributing factor for dementia. Our office now offers our patients a cognitive domain screening. This helps us to help our patients as we treat their hearing loss.”

Dr. Diane Blaising began her career in audiology in 1992. She received her doctor of audiology degree from the Arizona School of Health Sciences and her master’s

degree in audiology from the Callier Center for Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas. She has years of experience working with hearing-impaired adults and children in otolaryngologists’ offices and as a pediatric audiologist at the Louisville Deaf Oral School. Dr. Blaising is board-certified in audiology by the American Board of Audiology and has twice been given the Ace Award for continuing education.

METHODIST MOODY BRAIN AND SPINE INSTITUTE

For one patient, the mere thought of surgery was terrifying, but unrelenting pain caused him to schedule an appointment with Dr. Stephen Katzen. “His mannerism was warm and friendly, which put me at ease,” he said. “He has excellent communication skills. What a blessing he and his staff have been to me.” He knew he’d found his doctor.

Another patient admits she and her husband went to Dr. Katzen’s offi ce with a bit of a negative attitude. But who could blame them? They’d already been shuffled from doctor to doctor and felt like no one listened or cared. All that changed in their very fi rst encounter with Dr. Katzen. “He was very patient, kind and understanding. He took time to explain the issues in words we could understand,” she said. “He made sure every one of our questions were answered and gave us peace of mind, for the fi rst time, since my husband started having issues. We felt like we were a team and that everything he did was for my husband’s good.”

PROVIDER WHO CARES

Let’s face it. Nobody really wants to see a neurosurgeon. When they do, it’s because they’ve encountered injury to, or diseases/disorders of the brain, spinal

cord, spinal column, or peripheral nerves throughout their body. What they need is someone who will sit down with them and really listen, who will reassure them, someone with the experience and training to take what is a devastating time of life and work to make it better. They want a highly skilled expert on their side who deeply cares about restoring their health and quality of life. For many grateful patients, Stephen Katzen is just such a specialist.

PATIENT EDUCATION

With a special interest in treating degenerative conditions of the spine and tumors of the brain and spine, Dr. Katzen sees many families like these who are feeling hopeless, when they meet him. The first thing he wants to give them is an understanding of their condition. The second it hope. He also addresses many other neurosurgical conditions including trigeminal neuralgia, Chiari malformations, hydrocephalus, and cranial and spine trauma which can rob an individual—and a family—of their quality of life. It’s his blessing to do whatever he can to help restore it.

DFW NATIVE

Born and raised in DFW, Stephen Katzen, MD, is a board-eligible neurosurgeon

who practices at the Methodist Moody Brain and Spine Institute at both the Mansfield and Dallas locations. Dr. Katzen completed his undergraduate degree in Spanish from Tulane University in New Orleans and his medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Science Center in Lubbock. Following graduation, Dr. Katzen completed his residency in neurological surgery from the University of Texas Health Science Center Houston. He is fl uent in Spanish and English, and thoroughly enjoys traveling, playing classical piano, and spending time with his wife and their sweet daughter.

Methodist Moody Brain and Spine Institute is owned and operated by MedHealth/Methodist Medical Group and staffed by independently practicing physicians who are employees of MedHealth/Methodist Medical Group. The physicians and staff who provide services at these sites are not employees or agents of Methodist Health System or any of its affiliated hospitals.

KOS/DANCHAK AUDIOLOGY & HEARING AIDS

Dr. Melissa Danchak, Owner/Audiologist at Kos/Danchak Audiology & Hearing Aids, and her staff, have been helping North Texans hear better for over 35 years.

“We want to help people hear the best they can, and we want to exceed the level of service they expect,” Dr. Danchak said.

“Because your hearing health directly contributes to your overall well-being and quality-of-life, it makes sense to care for your hearing health the same way you do the rest of your health. We believe that better hearing health is an investment, not a transaction. The patient-fi rst approach we take and services we provide refl ect that belief.”

Millions of people experience limitations in their daily lives due to hearing loss. Unfortunately, many people wait upwards of 10 years to do something about their hearing needs. "The good news is that hearing loss can be treated. Today’s technology, which is supported by decades of research and clinical trials, provides an incredibly natural listening experience in all types of settings - especially when background noise is present and, on the telephone, which are the two most common areas our patients have the most challenges,” says Dr. Melissa Danchak.

The staff at Kos/Danchak Audiology & Hearing Aids have decades of experience in helping patients in all walks of life. For example, helping a grandmother hear her grandchildren more clearly on the phone. They help a working professional hear better in their place of employment. They help people hear better in social settings and at their place of worship. "There are not many audiology practices in the North Texas area that have been helping people hear better as long as we have,” Dr. Danchak says. "We believe that how we meet with people and the delivery of the services we provide is about giving an experience that makes people feel

confident in their decision to address their hearing health care needs with us!”

Dr. Danchak and her staff are humbled by the positive feedback and reviews they have earned from satisfi ed patients. “They are sharing their experiences with our offi ce which helps others that are searching for an audiologist feel confident in making a decision to address their hearing health care needs!”

The fi rst step to hearing better begins with a discussion about the challenges you are having when it comes to hearing and understanding clearly. After a diagnostic hearing evaluation, a live listening demonstration with hearing devices is next. “One of the best ways to help someone realize how much better they can hear with hearing devices, is to provide them with that experience. Watching the almost immediate range of positive emotions when a patient realizes how much better, and more clearly, they can hear is really special,” Dr. Danchak says.

Your appointment will be informative and the best fi rst step to hearing the best you can! “Our goal is to ensure that you have a positive experience and that you understand your hearing health care needs and solutions we can provide.”

“We want to help people hear the best they can, and we want to exceed the level of service they expect."

ARLINGTON ORTHOPEDICS ASSOCIATION

From the time he was a boy, Frank Rodriguez dreamed of a career in medicine. He did, that is, when he wasn’t dreaming of becoming a professional ballplayer. “I loved sports of all kinds,” he said. “If I wasn’t on the baseball field, I was shooting hoops in my driveway. If I wasn’t there, I was perfecting the perfect spiral with the pigskin.” Alas, a sports career wasn’t in the cards for young Frank. But that didn’t stop him from directing his love of sports another way.

As a lifelong athlete, he knew fi rsthand how an injury can land anyone on the sidelines. Now as an orthopedic surgeon, he’s able to help people from all walks of life reduce their pain and restore their bodies’ functionality and mobility. It’s something he’s been doing and loving for almost 30 years. There’s nothing more rewarding for Dr. Rodrigues than seeing patients who were once riddled with pain and limitations get back to the active life they love, whether that’s training for a marathon or being able to play on the fl oor with the grandkids.

As his practice has grown, he’s settled into a specialty in reconstruction, replacement,

and arthroscopy of the shoulder, hip, and knee. Patient education is a hallmark of his practice. He believes in spending time with each patient explaining their options, answering their questions, and putting their minds at ease. Patients are like family to Dr. Rodriguez. Some of them, for over twenty years, have trusted him with more than one joint replacement, and others have encouraged family members to come in for care, so Dr. Rodriguez was able to improve the lives of several members of the same family.

Dr. Rodriguez lives with his wife Kimberly, the love of his life, his best friend, and his partner of over 40 years. He and Kimberly both agree that Texas is the best state to live in, and they’re proud to call it “home”. Together they’ve raised three kids and are keeping their fingers crossed for grandchildren. They love the Dallas Fort Worth area because it has the best combination of professional opportunities and lots of SPORTS!

In his free time, Dr. Rodriguez indulges his love of sports by cycling, going to college football games, and collecting sports memorabilia, especially sports cards

from the ‘60s and ‘70s. In fact, some of his basketball card sets are the top cards in the world. The family dog, Duncan, the ninth Golden Retriever the Rodríguezes’ have owned over the years, even gets his name from former Spurs star, Tim Duncan.

Dr. Rodriguez’s home-away-from-home is Christ Chapel Bible Church Burleson. He and his wife enjoy Bible study and putting God fi rst in everything they do. Dr. Rodriguez cherishes the opportunity to share the gospel with his patients and often prays with them before surgeries. Find out more at ArlingtonOrtho.com.

SOUTH ARLINGTON SMILES

What does Dr. Talon Davis like most about dentistry? Changing lives! As a general dentist offering everything from routine fillings, crowns, and dentures to root canals, extractions, tissue grafting, and dental implants, his goal is to treat people fi rst and their smiles second. His offi ce, South Arlington Smiles among the most technologically advanced dental practices in the state, focusing on fully digital techniques and utilizing AI software to improve patient outcomes.

A family dental practice in every sense, he and his team are comfortable treating folks of all ages and backgrounds, focusing on bringing JOY to dentistry. “We want our patients to enjoy their smiles as much as we enjoy our work,” he said. “We focus on our community impact, seeking to raise the level of dental education and care while providing services that are highly affordable.” Dr. Davis understands that changing someone’s smile can change their life, instilling a new level of confi dence and happiness that was otherwise not possible. Toward that end, he invests in the most advanced technology that provides a unique mix of speed, effi ciency, and precision and does all he can to keep wait times and procedure times as brief as possible. As a healthcare provider, Dr. Davis is aware of the impact he can have on the lives of his patients as well as his staff members.

“I’ve been an educator in one form or another most of my life,” he said. “From teaching music lessons as a teenager and at the collegiate level to helping staff members learn new techniques that will better serve our patients, to taking time to explain recommended treatments to our patients. We understand the discomfort associated with going to the dentist and find that patient education can mitigate much of that fear. I never want to proceed with a procedure until our patient understands what to expect and why the procedure is necessary.”

Originally from Edmond, Oklahoma, Dr. Davis grew up playing the double bass in symphony orchestras, staying active in his church choir, and helping out in his family music studio. He completed two degrees in music performance and performed with major symphonies in the DFW area for years, before hearing a call to serve through dentistry. When not on the job, he still loves playing his double bass. He and his wife, Kristin, an orchestra director for Arlington ISD whom he met while an undergraduate, have a beautiful three-year-old daughter that’s the light of their lives.

Dr. Davis regularly volunteers at Mission Arlington providing dental services to the underserved and has set a goal this year for South Arlington Smiles to provide $50,000 in dental care to underserved

communities throughout Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Mansfi eld. He’s also a big supporter of local school and health fairs where he offers dental health education. When time allows, he enjoys getting in as much golf and Sooner football as he can.

"We understand the discomfort associated with going to the dentist and find that patient education can mitigate much of that fear. I never want to proceed with a procedure until our patient understands what to expect and why the procedure is necessary.”

BAYLOR SCOTT & WHITE SPORTS MEDICINE AND ORTHOPEDIC INSTITUTE

Baylor Scott & White Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Institute provides quality and comprehensive orthopedic care for patients suffering from musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. Here are two of their highly trained professionals.

DR. BRIAN MBAH

Brian Mbah has no trouble putting himself in his patients’ shoes. A lifelong athlete, he endured many a sports injury. When it came time to choose a career, he knew he wanted to continue being involved with sports and athletes. Now, as a fellowship-trained primary care sports medicine physician, he specializes in management of non-operative acute and chronic sports and orthopedicrelated injuries and loves helping others get back to the activities they love.

“Whether it’s a young kid playing team sports or a senior who enjoys pickleball, my goal is to get them back in the game,” Dr. Mbah said. “I take time talking to them about their recovery goals, educating them about treatment options, and partnering with them in deciding how we’ll proceed.”

One of his patients had this to say, “Even though I’m sure he was very busy Dr. Mbah took time with me and gave me

more information in 15 minutes than I’d received with any of my other doctor’s visits. He made me feel comfortable. He made me feel safe. He made me feel we had a plan.”

Dr. Mbah’s practice includes arthritis, tendinopathies, non-operative fracture care, and concussions. He specializes in ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal procedures, including steroid injections, orthobiologics, nerve blocks, prolotherapy, and percutaneous tenotomy. In his free time, he enjoys playing and watching sports, traveling with his wife, and trying new cuisine.

For Dr. Haariss Ilyas, spine surgery holds a special interest. “Each patient is unique with unique problems,” he said. "It’s like putting together a puzzle with many pieces beginning with the physical exam and talking to them about their goals.”

Although he’s a board certified, fellowshiptrained spine surgeon with years of experience, for him surgery is always a last resort. “For most patients, a combination of medication, injections, and non-operative therapies can restore their function and quality of life,” Dr. Ilyas said. “It’s only after we exhaust all conservative measures that we’ll consider surgical options.”

Dr. Ilyas spends time getting to know each patient, where they are, and where they’d like to be. “What are the hobbies they’re not able to enjoy? How is their injury limiting their life?” From there, he keeps the patient involved in all decision making, showing them their imaging, explaining what’s contributing to their symptoms, and all viable treatment options.

“The best day is any day I see a patient who was once in pain with limited function and now has their strength and quality of life back.” His free time is happily spent with his wife and their four, two, and five-month-old children. He’s about to embark on his first medical mission trip to Pakistan.

WHY SLEEP IS SO IMPORTANT FOR KIDS

Fluff your pillows and slip into your coziest PJs — it’s National Sleep Month. While we all love sinking into a soft bed and waking up rested and recharged, sleep is especially important for kids. Children need enough sleep to promote healthy growth and development, yet most aren’t getting nearly enough. According to the CDC, about one-third of kids are sleep-deprived.

Here’s why parents and caregivers should work to change that and make sleep more of a priority for their children.

58 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | march 2024 wellness

Sleep promotes learning. Kids are constantly learning new information, and their brains are growing faster than at any other time in life. Getting enough sleep is critical in helping the brain move new information from short-term memory to long-term memory. When kids are well-rested, it’s easier for them to remember things like state capitals, multiplication facts, and elements on the periodic table.

Sleep enhances kids’ immunity . Research has shown that sleep and the immune system are closely intertwined. Consistent sleep allows for balanced and effective immune function. Well-rested kids are better able to recover and fi ght off illnesses they may pick up on the playground or in the classroom.

Sleep promotes a healthier weight. Children who log more hours of sleep tend to have a decreased obesity risk. This is because sleep deprivation is associated with elevated cortisol levels and growth hormone deficiency, which have both been linked to obesity.

Sleep can lead to better behavior. Just like adults, kids can be cranky when they don’t get enough sleep. A study published in “Sleep Medicine” found that poor sleep is related to poor school behavior. Getting more rest helps kids not only stay more alert in class but also keep a better handle on their emotions.

Sleep boosts kids’ overall wellness. Children can simply do more and feel better when they’ve had enough sleep. They’ll have the energy to play and learn throughout the day. This leads to a snowball effect of feeling tired by bedtime and then being ready for another good night’s sleep.

SLEEPING WELL AT EVERY STAGE

Kids’ sleep needs change as they grow. For example, babies need anywhere from 14 to 17 hours, while toddlers should snooze for 11 to 14 hours. By the time kids are in elementary school, they need 9 to 11 hours. Teens should rest 8 to 10 hours every night. Check out the sidebar for ideas on how to help your kids get a full night’s sleep.

Set The Stage for Restful Slumber

Are you practicing good sleep hygiene at your house? This term refers to the habits, behaviors, and environmental factors that you can adjust to ensure a good night’s sleep.

If you have a:

Baby : First, make sure they’re not hungry or need a diaper change. Then, try soothing them back to sleep by talking or patting their back. Very young babies haven’t yet developed a circadian rhythm, but you can help them by using light and darkness as visual cues on when to rest.

Toddler: Give your toddler some say over what pajamas they wear or what book to read before bed. This can help cut back on bedtime stalling and stubbornness. Also, establish a soothing bedtime routine. This may include a warm bath or soft music.

School-age kid: Try to stick to a consistent schedule whenever possible. Sports and other extracurricular activities can make it challenging but aim to follow the same routine every night. Make sure your kids complete their homework and other activities outside their bedroom to create a clear distinction between the bedroom and sleep.

Teenager : Only about 8% of American teens get the sleep they need, according to a study in the “Journal of Adolescent Health.” Instead of battling over bedtimes, try touting all the benefits of getting more sleep. For example, teenagers will perform better in the classroom and in their extracurricular activities with proper rest. They’ll also experience a lift in their mood. Try limiting screen time before bed and eliminating late-night eating and drinking.

YOUTH allergies

TIPS FOR MANAGING SYMPTOMS AT HOME AND SCHOOL

The most common food allergies in children are eggs, milk, and peanuts, followed by wheat, soy, and tree nuts. The most severe reactions are to peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish, which can include hives, asthma, itching in the mouth, breathing trouble, stomach pains, vomiting, and/or diarrhea.

Back when my husband and I were dreaming of starting our family, I imagined the things I wanted our kids to inherit from each of us and those I hoped they wouldn’t. One of the things I certainly hoped not to pass along was my seasonal allergies. Well, one child out of four isn’t bad, I guess. If you suspect your child may have allergies of any kind, the fi rst thing you want to do is schedule an appointment with a board-certified allergist. An allergist can run diagnostic testing to determine what — if anything — your child is allergic to and create an action plan to help them understand what causes their symptoms and determine what medications and practices can help. The 10 most common childhood allergies are foods, animals, pollen, mold, dust mites, medications, latex, insect stings, cockroaches, and perfumes/household chemicals. You can do many things at home to help mitigate allergy reactions. Vacuum and dust frequently in living areas, especially

60 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | march 2024 wellness

your child’s room. Wash their bedding in the hottest temperature possible and be diligent about replacing HVAC filters. If they have food allergies, there may be a learning curve for you as you fi nd your way around cooking the things they can eat. And always — always — keep an EpiPen where anyone in the family can fi nd it.

Talk to your child’s classroom teacher, school administrators, and school nurse about your child’s allergy or asthma treatment plan and what things your child needs to avoid. There are many places for allergens to hide in a classroom. Mold lurks in HVAC ducts. Pollen can float in through open windows. There may be trees growing around the playground that produce an allergic response or dander on a classroom pet. Allergens can be present in classroom rugs or carpets. They may even have reactions to the clothing and backpacks of other children.

If your child is starting at a new school or in a new classroom, pay

close attention to their allergies to determine whether something at school is triggering symptoms. If your child has food allergies, you’ll need to send lunches prepared at home and substitute classroom snacks with those they can tolerate.

If your child has been diagnosed with asthma, you’ll need to be diligent about warding off respiratory viruses, which can worsen their symptoms. Remind your child about healthy practices like frequent handwashing and not drinking from the same glass, cup, or straw as their buddies. If they’re not feeling well, keep them home from school since their resistance will be lower than usual.

Keep in mind that allergy and asthma symptoms can change as your child matures or moves from one environment to another, and their growth can impact medication effi cacy and dosage. For this reason, make an annual check-up with their allergist and reevaluation of their allergies a priority.

‘Tis the Season

One in five kids suffers from seasonal allergies, a number which is likely to grow, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, due to climate change leading to longer pollen seasons and more significant pollen production. Their advice? Get ahead of symptoms instead of reacting to them by starting medications early and using them regularly throughout the season.

This can calm the immune system and provide greater relief. Waiting until your child is miserable with itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, and a scratchy throat may take more medication to control their symptoms, which may also mean more side effects.

ALL ABOUT otoplasty

BOOST SELF-CONFIDENCE WITH COSMETIC EAR SURGERY

Around 5% of the population has prominent ears, making otoplasty — also known as cosmetic ear surgery — a sought-after procedure. The most commonly performed type of otoplasty, called ear pinning, helps people who feel self-conscious about ears that stick out conspicuously. Since our ears are around 90% grown by the time we start primary school, ear pinning can be performed as young as age fi ve.

WHY OTOPLASTY?

Large or misshapen ears can offset facial balance to the point that sometimes the ears are the fi rst thing you notice

62 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | march 2024 aesthetics |

about a person. Understandably, those individuals may feel unhappy about their ears, and children can be teased and bullied by their peers. Ear plastic surgery, a permanent procedure that addresses the size, shape, and position of the ears, can address a variety of concerns. Issues include ears that protrude from the sides of the head, or that fold over on the top (lop ears). Or you may want to reshape ears that are asymmetrical or overly large in proportion to your facial features. Plastic surgeons also repair ears that have been injured and repair tears from piercing and excessive holes from wearing gauges.

AGING, DROOPY, OR CREASED EAR LOBES?

Have you looked in the mirror lately and thought, “What’s up with my ears?” Like everything else on your body, your ears can be affected by the changes of age. Cute ears that fi t your facial structure when you were younger may look more prominent, and lobes may appear to grow and lengthen and even become wrinkled or creased. This is because gravity causes the cartilage in your ears to break down and sag. Luckily, there’s no real age limit for otoplasty as long as you’re healthy. Consult with a plastic surgeon to see if you’re a good candidate and to review recommended options.

IS MY CHILD READY FOR EAR PINNING?

If you wonder whether your child is ready for otoplasty, consider

whether they can understand and want the procedure and can follow basic instructions given during the recovery process. Otoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia for children, so your plastic surgeon will take a thorough medical history to ensure the procedure can be safe and successful and will determine if their age is appropriate for the procedure.

OVERLY SMALL EARS?

In many cases, ear augmentation can be performed to increase the outer portion of the ear when ears are abnormally small or haven’t fully developed. This may require cartilage, often taken from the ribs or tissue grafting.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR COSMETIC EAR SURGERY?

Healthy children ages fi ve and up are usually considered good candidates, and adults in good overall health with a healthy heart and lungs. If you smoke, don’t be surprised if you’re asked to quit two months before undergoing otoplasty. During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will review your medical history, examine the ear size, shape, and placement, discuss corrective options, and answer questions about the procedure and recovery. It’s also important to have realistic expectations about the results and to fully comply with all post-op instructions provided by your plastic surgeon for the best outcome.

Otoplasty Fast Facts

• This one to three-hour outpatient procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia.

• Be prepared to sleep on your back for a couple of weeks after undergoing otoplasty.

• Minimize swelling by keeping your head elevated, including while you sleep.

• Avoid sudden head movements and bending over the first two to three days after surgery.

• Incisions are usually “invisible” because they’re hidden at the back of the ear or inside the folds of the ear.

• Results can be seen as early as two weeks after surgery.

• If you had otoplasty before, per haps as a child, and aren’t satisfied, ask your plastic surgeon about a revision procedure to fine-tune your results.

• Adults should schedule a week off after surgery or arrange to work remotely.

• Everyone experiences pain differently, but generally, postoperative pain from otoplasty is considered minimal. Expect ears to be swollen and sore for 24 to 72 hours.

• Avoid prolonged sun exposure and extreme temperatures for a couple of months after ear surgery. After this, avoid tanning to prevent hyperpigmentation of scars.

• Avoid activities during recovery that may interfere with healing, including wearing headphones or ear pods.

AU naturel

IS IT PLASTIC SURGERY OR MOTHER NATURE’S HANDIWORK ?

Have you ever noticed someone who’s had plastic surgery that looks completely natural? Ok, we admit this is a trick question. When results appear natural, you won’t know for sure if they used cosmetic surgery to enhance their appearance.

Looking natural starts with choosing an experienced plastic surgeon with an excellent reputation and having realistic expectations. But there’s more to it. If you do things a little at a time as you age versus waiting and having major work all at once, you can maintain a naturally youthful, age-defying appearance. Below, we outline a few procedures

64 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | march 2024 aesthetics
65 march 2024 | LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET

people are interested in from their 20s and up, but nothing’s set in stone. Age is just a number if you’re in overall good health and a viable candidate for plastic surgery.

20 s AND 30 s

During these years plastic surgery is generally focused on addressing body appearance or a feature you’re unhappy with, such as your nose.

Per the American Society for Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the most popular plastic surgery for patients ages 20 to 29 and 30 to 39, by far, is breast augmentation. Breast augmentation addresses breast size, shape, projection, and symmetry, and today’s breast implants offer more options than ever before. Let your plastic surgeon know you’re interested in natural-looking results so they can help you choose implants that suit your body frame. Mommy makeovers, performed after you’re done having children, help

restore your body to its pre-pregnancy condition. They include a combination of customized body contouring procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lift, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) to address stretched abdominal muscles and loose, excess skin, and liposuction to reduce diet and exercise-resistant body fat.

AGES 40 TO 50

People in this age bracket who are good candidates opt for almost any type of body contouring procedure to address signs of aging and issues resulting from weight gain and loss. They include liposuction, arm and knee lifts, tummy tucks, and more.

It’s also a time when facial aging becomes a growing concern. Eyelid surgery, performed on the upper or lower lids addresses excess skin and fat that gather above and below your eyelids, causing sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids, and bags under the eyes. Minimally

invasive procedures such as the mini face lift, neck lift, and endoscopic brow lift involve using shorter incisions than regular surgical facial procedures. They help you look refreshed, usually with less downtime. Ask your plastic surgeon to compare mini procedures with regular services, including typical results and what to expect during recovery.

THE 50 s , 60 s , AND UP

According to the ASPS, the total cosmetic surgery procedures for the face signifi cantly outnumber those for the breast and body as we get older. A regular face, neck, or forehead lift can noticeably turn back the clock and put a new spring in your step. Fat transfer (using your own fat collected via liposuction) can help restore lost volume. The timing of a facelift and other procedures depends on your facial aging and your ideals for your appearance. Everyone is unique, and if you’ve had a mini procedure before, you may only need a touch-up versus a full procedure.

What About Nonsurgical Minimally and Noninvasive Medspa Services?

Say “Yes, please!” to medspa services to maintain a youthful look over the years. They’re an excellent way to enjoy a refreshed appearance before you’re ready for something more invasive. Keep in mind, however, that these services rarely yield results that last as long or are as dramatic as surgical procedures.

Some of the most sought-after medspa

services include injectables like dermal fillers, which restore volume and smooth lines, and Botox. Noninvasive procedures using advanced technology such as lasers, BBL (broadband light), RF (radio frequency), and ultrasound energy are sought-after for skin resurfacing and tightening and addressing sun damage and discoloration. Minimally invasive

body contouring services — alternatives to liposuction — can reduce stubborn pockets of body fat.

Also, remember that medspa services complement surgical procedures and are often included in rejuvenation packages. For example, skin resurfacing and injectables can be added to a facelift for a more complete rejuvenation.

MARINE-BASED SKINCARE INGREDIENTS: NOURISH, SMOOTH, RESTORE, AND HYDRATE

Enhancing your skin with marine-based ingredients may seem like a recent trend, but it’s centuries-old. According to historians, a Qin Dynasty empress in China included ingredients like seaweed and jellyfi sh in her skincare routine, and Cleopatra, the ultimate beauty queen, used Dead Sea salts.

Today’s luxury skincare products with marine ingredients range from expensive options like La Mer moisturizing cream, a favorite among the Hollywood crowd, to those more

reasonably priced. They include Spa Technologies Marine Repair Cream with seaweed extracts, SkinMedica

TNS Advanced+Serum with algaederived extracts, Blue Lagoon’s Algae Mask, OxygenCeuticals Age Defying Caviar Cream with caviar extract, and Restørsea Rejuvenating Day Cream with hydrolyzed salmon roe, to name a few.

If you’re interested in trying new products with marine-based ingredients, ask your dermatologist or aesthetician to recommend brands that will benefit your skin type. When purchasing overthe-counter products, look for marine ingredients such as those below.

SEAWEED EXTRACTS

Chock-full of amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, seaweed is used in cleansers, toners, moisturizers, serums, masks, and lip gloss. Benefits include collagen production, exfoliation, soothing inflammation, toning, and moisturizing. A brown seaweed called laminaria digitata (aka oarweed, tangleweed, or sea ribbon) helps soothe distressed skin and ease signs of aging due to sun damage. Another, fucus

vesiculosus (bladderwrack), promotes anti-aging activities and improves skin elasticity and fi rmness.

FISH ROE ENZYMES AND EXTRACTS

Did you know that fi sh roe, like salmon eggs and caviar (sturgeon eggs), are not used solely for culinary purposes? With plenty of vitamins and antioxidants, caviar boasts moisturizing, nourishing, and retexturizing protective qualities, which help reverse signs of aging. The enzymes in salmon roe can correct uneven skin tone, increase elasticity, and smooth fi ne lines and wrinkles.

PHYTOPLANKTON EXTRACTS

Rich in vitamins, amino acids, and essential fatty acids, phytoplankton extracts stimulate skin cells to produce pro-ceramides, which help create ceramides from within. Ceramides are fats or lipids in skin cells that help maintain a healthy, protective barrier that locks in moisture.

MARINE ALGAE

According to LiveScience.com, marine algae are a diverse group of

photosynthetic aquatic organisms. So, an ingredient listed as algae extract can contain almost anything from seaweed to microalgae like phytoplankton. Think of it as an overall umbrella term.

JELLYFISH

These strange sea creatures may look like something from outer space, but with regenerative properties and naturally containing collagen, jellyfi sh extract plays a leading role in maintaining and improving skin hydration and elasticity.

SEA SALTS AND MINERALS

The beauty benefits of sea salts are far-reaching. Primarily composed of sodium and chloride, sea salt also contains traces of magnesium, calcium, potassium, zinc, iron, gold, sodium, iodine, manganese, chloride, selenium, and bromide, which help maintain healthy skin. Although it may seem contrary to intuition or common sense, sea salt helps create a protective barrier that locks in moisture and prevents dryness.

RENOVATION ready

GET A RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT WITH THESE HOME UPDATES

Before taking on your next home remodeling project, it’s a good idea to get your ducks in a row by doing some essential preliminary work.

First, determine whether you’ll need a professional or not. If you do, then research the professionals you’ll want to hire. Then consider that not all renovations are equal. Many projects make for a better return on investment (ROI) when it’s time to sell. Lean on the side of neutrality so that house hunters will clearly visualize their own personalities in the home.

Also, research current trends. Each year, surveys are conducted revealing the ROI of popular home renovations. Contractors nation-wide are polled to calculate what these upgrades cost to complete. The data collected is compared with how much real estate agents estimated these features would boost a home’s market price. This year’s answers overwhelmingly show that the focus should be on the parts of your home that are the most visible because most buyers will decide whether they want to purchase in the fi rst few minutes of looking. That means a new garage door and front door, new siding, and fresh, updated landscaping should be the fi rst projects you consider.

New garage doors have a huge visual impact on a house you’re planning to put on the market and replacing them can recoup over 100% of the cost in resale. Entry door replacement is

impactful and one of the fi rst things a buyer will see. And the ROI is a whopping 90.7%.

The exterior of your house can take a beating from the elements, and after a while it shows. New siding could recoup 75.6% of the cost when you sell your house. Replacing part of that siding with manufactured stone veneer, however, will have a bigger impact. Homeowners who install a stone veneer on their house – usually on the bottom third of the exterior – see as much as 94.9% of the cost come back in the sale price.

Fresh landscaping could be just what the home needs to look new and appealing and with an ROI of 100%, every dollar spent here is worth it. It’s important to replace dead patches of grass, mow the lawn regularly and add a bit of color with flowers or bushes. Indoors for kitchens and bathrooms, think minor renovations. A major upscale kitchen renovation will recoup just 50% of the cost when the property sells, and an upscale bathroom remodel only 56%. Instead, consider simply updating the kitchen cabinets and backsplash or installing a double vanity or new lights and showerhead in the bathroom.

Another worthy consideration is replacing the windows, which impacts both the outdoor appearance and the indoor bottom line. Replacement of midrange windows can see an ROI up to $1.15 for every dollar spent on the project, but that profit decreases with more upscale windows.

PONDERING A new fence?

HERE ARE A FEW OPTIONS TO CONSIDER

Fences have always been the best way to ensure privacy and deter unwanted visitors. Whether you’re making sure pets stay in the yard or keeping the neighborhood children out of your flowerbeds, there’s a fence for you. First, check with your local zoning office and homeowner’s association to take the correct preliminary steps. Once you’ve received approvals, the next step is selecting the right fence material. Hire a professional to install your new fence for the best results.

WOODEN FENCES

Wooden fences are popular because they’re attractive, durable, versatile, and can be carved, painted, or stained to match any home or garden style. Cedar is stable, rarely warps, and doesn’t shrink. Southern pine is usually best if your yard has a combination of some sunlight and moist leaves. You’ll pay top dollar for a redwood or teak fence, but nothing compares to their softness and luster. Install wood fences in a concrete base or secure planks to treated wooden fence posts.

VINYL

Vinyl fences are attractive, non-porous, and easy to clean. PVC is most often used because it’s durable and affordable. However, its synthetic appearance can stick out against natural backgrounds, and it can be more expensive than wood. Thickness counts for quality and will look best for the longest time (some with a lifetime guarantee).

CHAIN LINK

While chain links don’t provide much privacy or beauty, they offer adequate security for pets and kids at a low cost, especially

if you have a large rural yard. Installation is easy, offering even more savings. However, they add less value to your investment and are easier to damage than other options.

METAL

Metal fences are costly upfront, with wrought iron typically more expensive than aluminum. However, the aesthetic appeal and durability can’t be beaten. Although they usually don’t provide much privacy, they offer security, especially around a pool. Options range from classic to contemporary to match any home style.

COMPOSITE

Manufactured from wood fibers combined with plastic polymers, composite fencing is a wood look-a-like without the susceptibility to insects and rot. There are a variety of colors and styles, contingent on engineering and application. Because they’re more durable and require little maintenance, they cost more, plus professional installation is required. Quality can vary, so buy from a reputable dealer.

MASONRY

Masonry is stately and beautiful, but materials and installation can be costly, and they usually require structural footing poured below the frost line because they’re heavy. Many homeowners pair masonry with wrought iron or wood to enhance the design and lower costs. Block and poured concrete need steel reinforcement, and brick fences often feature a concrete or block inner fence with a brick veneer exterior.

SPRING INTO Texas

TAKE A DIP IN THE STATE’S NATURAL WATER WONDERS

When the sweat drips, take a dip. However, we didn’t forget the steamy hot springs in this list of natural springfed pools, though they’re better suited for a soak than a swim. If you’re partial to cold plunges, head to the state’s fresh and frigid spring pools. Our advice on acclimating? If you’re in good health, jump in!

KRAUSE SPRINGS, SPICEWOOD

It’s the scenery here, really. Cliffside ferns, elephant ears, and vines drape near a small waterfall. The mossy, picturesque grotto is hard to resist. Add a naturally springfed pool that stays a brisk 68 degrees, and you have a Central Texas must-see. The pool is not clear, and the shore is hard rock, but Krause Springs remains a bucket list stop for many. Remember to explore the butterfl y garden, but don’t expect to visit in the winter, when the private site closes for the season. Online reservations are often booked many weeks ahead of time. Ticketed visitors may tent camp without a reservation, but RV spots must be booked in advance.

Balmorhea Springs Pool

BALMORHEA STATE PARK, TOYAHVALE

The San Solomon Springs pumps millions of gallons to this oasis in the desert, the largest spring-fed pool in the world. With deepest points at 25 feet below the surface, scuba divers are not an unusual sight, either. About halfway between Fort Stockton and Van Horn in southwest Texas, this massive pool is a can’t-miss.

BARTON SPRINGS POOL, AUSTIN

Hot days are thick with swimmers at this chilly jewel in Austin’s outdoor crown. Sometimes, the algae are thick, too. That won’t keep front crawlers, back-strokers, and float-loungers from this natural pool fed from an underground spring. Enjoying waters from the sensitive and precious Edwards aquifer in the heart of Austin’s Zilker Park, divers backfl ip, twirl, and belly fl op from the board while families watch near the shallow end. Giant infl atable donuts have become more popular of late. You’ll fi nd a sea of beach towels on the big grassy (hopefully) lawn, with cool water temperatures of around 68 degrees keeping the grounds busy.

“The water is warmer than the outside air in the winter,” say the year-rounders, including many seniors, taking their daily constitutional at Barton Springs Pool. Tip: Visit nearby Deep Eddy for a smaller, quieter experience at a spring-fed pool in Austin.

BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK

In the ruins of the old bath house right on the edge of the Rio Grande, there’s a small concrete tub people sit in to watch the sunset. Built early in the 20th century by J.O. Langford, the rocky tub is all that’s left of his efforts. Crystal clear, 105-degree water fi lls the ruins, and the hot springs are very popular with tourists. Most restorative soak seekers visit Big Bend National Park, where the hot springs are located during the busy season from November to April. Due to surging park popularity, lodging reservations can be made six months in advance, but you need not camp to soak. Day-use visitors can take the quarter-mile hike down an easy trail past the pictographs and petroglyphs of days gone by.

CHINATI HOT SPRINGS, RUIDOSA

Once owned by the minimalist sculptor Donald Judd, the secluded Chinati Hot Springs is only open to those staying on the property in one of several colorful desert cabins. Natural lithium content in the water, pumped from fi ve miles below the earth’s surface, is a big draw, according to General Manager Diana Burbach. Guests make the two-hour drive from Marfa to visit year-round, bathing in the cold pool after a hot bath during the sweltering summer months. Groups book the entire property from time to time. Dark skies make this a great place to stargaze. No Wi-Fi makes it an even better place to unplug.

HANCOCK SPRINGS POOL, LAMPASAS

Located in Hancock Springs Park, this little spring-fed, free-flow pool was constructed for baptisms in the late 1800s. This sulfurous pool is known to be much less crowded than some of the other spots on our list while still offering lots of shade and grassy picnic areas.

Honorable mention: Camp Hot Wells, San Antonio

While this location features well water, we thought you should know about it anyway. Next to the ruins of what was once a luxurious turn-of-the-century resort touting the innumerable benefits of bathing in the sulfuric, geothermically heated waters from an Edwards well, Camp Hot Wells breathes new life into San Antonio’s past. Book one of two clawfoot or cedar tubs for 60 to 90 minutes and enjoy a cold shower, too. Opened in 2023, Camp Hot Wells invites guests to dip their toes into their heated front pool. The pool is open to the public without a reservation and free to patrons of their beverage bar, which offers short lists of non-alcoholic beverages, seltzer and sake, and more extensive beer and wine lists.

SET aside 1 cup of peas. BLEND peas, parmesan, and olive oil in a blender until smooth. SEASON with salt, pepper, and lemon, set aside. When potatoes are done, remove from oven and let potatoes cool long enough to handle. PEEL the potatoes and cut the flesh into large pieces. PASS the potato flesh through a potato ricer into a mound on a clean work surface. Let the potatoes cool completely. SPRINKLE the flour and salt over the mound of potatoes. CRACK the egg over the flour and begin to combine with a fork. USE your hands to gently knead and fully combine the ingredients. GATHER the dough into a ball. LINE a baking sheet with parchment. ROLL each piece on a gnocchi paddle or the back of the tines of a fork to form grooves. PLACE on the prepared baking sheet. REPEAT with the remaining dough. BRING a large pot of salted water to a boil. ADD the gnocchi and cook until they begin to float, 1 to 2 minutes, then cook 1 minute longer. STRAIN and toss with pea pesto and remaining peas.

TIPS & TRICKS: You can boil the potatoes instead of baking for about 50 minutes, then follow the same process. Potato, flour, and egg mixture should be light and fluffy, not dense. You can also buy store-made gnocchi to save time.
