25 LOST

POUNDS IN 3 MONTHS!

I've tried so many diet plans that just didn't seem to fit what I was looking for, or just didn't work at all. I found myself feeling sick at the weight I was at, while I was trying to lose the weight. Hearing about Diet Solution Center from my daughter Michaela, and seeing her weight loss I decided to give it a try! Since starting Diet Solution Center I've lost a total of 25 pounds in just 13 weeks. I've never felt more comfortable than where I am at! Diet Solution Center has given me more confidence. A huge thank you to Dr. Knight and Michaela for all their help and encouragement! Without that I wouldn't have results and I have today! Thank you to all the staff at Diet Solutions Center.”

New grade. New teacher. Sometimes a new school. New challenges and adventures. I can still see the backpacks lined up with fresh, new notebooks, each child’s name carefully penned on the front. Fresh crayons and bottles of glue. Spotless new school shoes. Much has changed, since my kids were in school. My grandkids schooling includes much more technology and even virtual options. Some of my favorite times with my kids were our morning prayers on school days. I loved hearing them pray for their friends and loved catching a glimpse into their school life. I’m now blessed with six grandchildren and I love asking them what God is doing in their lives. Little voices and sweet smiles as we chat about our savior Jesus. I never want to stop teaching and directing the young ones. Here’s to all the parents and grandparents! May God bless you and keep you as you enjoy the blessings of children.

The “Dog Days” of summer have proven to be filled with fun and games in the City of Mansfield. While summertime is almost over for our students and teachers, there is still a lot to look forward to in the month of August. Participate in the festivities at the Mansfield Activities Center this August. Kids of all ages can take advantage of the “Watercolor Workshop,.” Who knows, you may be a burgeoning artist. The workshop is for people ages 13 years and older. The fun does not stop there. Our city is featuring the "Slide Outta Summer" event featuring water slides, music, and snacks for an incredibly fun summer send off. The Mansfield Activity Center is also the location for the “Smart Driver” defensive driving class that could help you lower the cost of your insurance. For cost and other information please visit their website: www.mansfieldtexas.gov /825/Mansfield-Activities-Center-MAC As summer winds down, the Mansfield Parks and

Recreation department will have the final playdate for our “100 hours of Play” challenge on August 5th and will be announcing winners shortly thereafter. The Parks and Recreation department is challenging families to spend 100 hours playing and engaging in activities away from their computer screens and smart phones. This is a citywide campaign to encourage screen-free quality time together. Every child who submits hours or attends an event will be entered in our weekly drawing for fun prizes, find out more by visiting their website www.mansfieldtexas.gov /1900/100-Hours-of-PLAY or the home page of the parks department. mansfieldparks.com. Don’t forget, the Fall Discount Day for Parks and Rec is Thursday, August 18th from 9am-9pm. If you register for recreation classes that day you save 15% on fees. Hope to see you around town!

As the hot summer blazes on, as of late July the city of Grand Prairie was under Stage 1 restrictions and nearing Stage 2. Residents and businesses are asked to conserve our water supply by following Stage 1 restrictions. Stage 2 would limit outdoor watering to once a week. The other alternative would be to have to purchase more water from our suppliers, but that is expensive (yes, cost is passed on to residents and businesses) and permanent. So let’s work together now to conserve our use of water by following these Stage 1 restrictions. STAGE 1 RESTRICTIONS

Water Restrictions in Effect For residences and businesses •Do not use landscape/lawn sprinklers between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. any day. •No landscape/lawn sprinkler use on Wednesday,

mayor

MA NSFI ELD

GRA ND PRAIRI E Saturday or Sunday. •Even numbered addresses may water using landscape/lawn sprinklers on Mondays and Thursdays. •Odd numbered addresses may water using landscape/lawn sprinklers on Tuesday and Fridays. •When watering, a constant stream of water should not be allowed to flow into the street. •Watering during precipitation is prohibited. Rain sensors are required on newer landscape/lawn sprinkler systems. •Hand watering and soaker hoses are allowed any time. Clean, fresh water is a limited precious resource. Many believe that our water supply is infinite. It is not. Conserving water means using our water supply wisely.

Arlington Tomorrow Foundation is at it again, making The American Dream City an even better place to live, play, and work. Again, this year, "Share the Stage,” at Levitt Pavilion is providing paying gigs to North Texas musicians, thanks in part to a $50,000 grant from the foundation. Share the Stage showcases emerging and established North Texas musicians, through bookings as opening acts for the Levitt’s signature free concert series, which runs through October.

To date, Share the Stage has supported more than 100 local artists including emerging music artists, women, and artists of color. Hope you and your family will come out and enjoy some of the free concerts this year and support these talented local artists.

A RLINGTON program this summer, thanks to The Texas Rangers Summer Reading Club. Over 20 libraries across DFW participated in the 20th year of Rangers Summer Reading, encouraging kids to set and exceed reading goals during their summer vacation.

Special thanks go out to Rangers Hall of Fame broadcaster Eric Nadel who served as honorary chairman of the program and hosted two in-person library readings. This year, kids 12 and younger who attended his reading event were entered to win game tickets, a pre-game tour of Globe Life Field, an inning in the radio booth with Nadel, and the opportunity to make the “play ball” call before a game. Thanks, Eric, for investing in the children of Arlington.

THINK YOURSELF

happy BY DON CLOWERS

LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET

august 2022

“The secret to overcoming every unpleasant issue in life lies in how we choose to think . How we think is the starting point of handling life’s problems.”

God wants you to be happy. If you are looking around today, you might not think so. Losses, disappointments, and the decisions of others can cloud our lens of God’s good intentions. In our own life and ministry, my wife and I have IDFHG EHWUD\DOV āQDQFLDO VHWEDFNV WKH near-fatal accident of our six-year-old GDXJKWHU DQG WKH GHDWK RI RXU āIWHHQ year-old son. Heartbreaks and calamity are common to us all. Yet, ever since Eden, God’s intentions have been clear. He wants his family to enjoy a life of abundance and happiness. The secret to overcoming every unpleasant issue in life lies in how we choose to think. How we think is the starting point of handling life’s problems.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? You might recall the story in the book of Acts, where the Apostle Paul stood trial before King Agrippa. I have read the story many times, but recently I saw something I had never noticed before. The story goes like this. Paul was in prison. The many charges against him included insurrection for allegedly coming against the Law, the Temple, and even Caesar himself. Paul was innocent of the trumped-up charges, none of which could be proved. But that did not stop two Roman governors, Felix and Festus, from unlawfully condemning him to prison. At that point, Paul had a decision to make. He could fold under pressure, give in to his fate, or rise up DQG āJKW IRU MXVWLFH $V D -HZ KH NQHZ his rights, but how he would think and respond to his situation was his choice. Instead of reacting to the biased decisions of these governors, Paul chose to go over their heads. As a Roman citizen, he filed an appeal to King Agrippa to have his case presented to the higher court of Caesar Nero. In the middle of an unpleasant situation, Paul chose how he would think, resulting in one of the greatest overturning of circumstances recorded in the Bible. Here’s how it went. “Then Agrippa said to Paul, ‘You are permitted to speak for yourself.’ So, Paul stretched out his hand and answered for himself: 2 ‘I think myself happy, King

Agrippa, because today I shall answer for myself before you concerning all the things of which I am accused by the -HZV ÚâÝ $FWV 1.-9 emphasis mine). He chose to create his ow n inner environment by choosing his thoughts, regardless of the thoughts, accusations, or intentions of others. He chose to think himself happy.

WHATEVER YOU THINK We have all been challenged by life experiences. As long as we live, we will have to decide how we will handle those challenges. Our decisions will be based on how and what we think. Where we are in our lives right now is the direct outcome of decisions based on our thinking at every crossroad. Many people feel their circumstances at the starting point of life put them at a disadvantage. Injustices, abuses, and bad things have happened that make life seem unfair. Let me settle that one for you: Life is not fair. God never promised anyone it would be. The quicker you get that straight, the happier you will be. You do not get to choose your beginning, but you do have the opportunity — and the responsibility — to FKRRVH ZKHUH \RX HQG XS -HVXV ZDV WKH āUVW WR ZDUQ DERXW WKH WULDOV WULEXODWLRQV and hardships we would all face. He did not say he would remove them. In my book, Think Myself Happy, I show how deep-seated beliefs can be uprooted and replace thoughts that trigger bad habits, depression, and despair. How we choose to think is critical. We can either think about how unfair, unkind, or ugly the situation is and feel sorry for ourselves, or we can think DERXW KRZ -HVXV KDV DOUHDG\ overcome it. What we think about right in the middle of trouble will determine the outcome. We get to choose.

FINALLY Learning to navigate through unhappy circumstances has never been more important than it is now. In a culture of polarizing opinions, heightened emotions, and a shifting economy, many feel the world is coming apart. The generations that follow us need our experienced life to

teach, train, and be an example of Christ to a confused and hurting world. One of my favorite reminders from the Bible is, “Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good UHSRUW LI WKHUH EH DQ\ YLUWXH DQG LI WKHUH be any praise, think RQ WKHVH WKLQJVÝ 3KLOLSSLDQV .-9 emphasis mine). How do you handle life’s challenges? What do you think? Be encouraged, friend. You can think yourself happy today.

Just down the road in Arlington, the only specialty hospital of its kind in the D F W Me t r o p l e x is investing even more resources into i t s t e c h n o l o g y.

Since opening its doors in 2010, Baylor Scott & White – Arlington has steadily grown to meet the increasing needs of North Texas. It is Dallas-Fort Worth’s only hospital concentrating strictly on orthopedic and spine care. Patients will fi nd orthopedic surgery, spine treatment, joint replacement, diagnostic imaging, pain management, sports medicine and physical therapy all in one place. The hospital recently added additional inpatient suites, so they can serve many more patients in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The boutique-style facility also offers 10 operating rooms, exceptional staff, and a pain management center.

ROBOT-ASSISTED SURGERY IMPROVES PATIENT OUTCOMES Baylor Scott & White – Arlington also invested in sophisticated robotic technology. Robotic surgery – also called robotically assisted surgery – is a major breakthrough in minimally invasive surgical capabilities. Through this proven technique, a surgeon uses a computer console to control very small instruments and a high-resolution camera attached to robotic arms. The surgeon has greater precision and control, resulting in a host of benefits for the patient: • Reduced pain and discomfort • Less blood loss • Smaller incisions, reducing the risk of infection • Minimal scarring • Shorter recovery time and hospital stay • Faster return to normal activities

RADIOLOGY INVESTMENT WILL HELP MORE PATIENTS Baylor Scott & White Orthopedic and Spine Hospital – Arlington recently added a second MRI to its radiology department. Patients will appreciate faster, more comfortable exams from the hospital’s two Philips Ingenia Ambition 1.5T MRI magnets. These scans can be fully customized for your particular need, and the crystal-clear images mean you can have confidence in your diagnosis. MRI is available 24/ 7 in the hospit a l’s emergency room, or you c a n s che du le a n app oi nt ment w it h a physician order. Baylor Scott & White – Arlington also offers advanced CT, ultrasound and x-ray. GE fully digital mobile x-ray technology allows for immediate visualization of your injury or condition in the emergency room, and is also used for post-operative imaging. Thanks to its portability, hospital staff can bring this sophisticated imaging system directly to you. The hospital now offers expanded hours for appointments. MRI and CT appointments are available 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, as well as 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. For your sudden

pains or injuries, the emergency room is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and wait times are consistently short. You won’t need to wait long for your imaging results either, as Baylor Scott & White – Arlington prioritizes fast turnaround times. On-site orthopedic and spine radiologists ensure the speed and accuracy of your scan results.

CENTER OF EXCELLENCE FOR SPINE SURGERY AND JOINT REPLACEMENT There’s a reason why Medicare and Medicaid, along with many private health plans, now encourage and often require patients to seek orthopedic care at certified Centers of Excellence in order to receive reimbursement for services. A Center of Excellence is a collective of physicians and administrators who commit to delivering the highest quality of care in a certain specialty. Certified hospitals must meet a long list of criteria, and they are audited

reg ularly to ensure st andards stay high. Baylor Scott & W hite – Arling ton worked diligently to become a Center of Excellence for both spine surgery and joint replacement. For patients, that equates to improved outcomes, lowered complications, thriving innovation and reduced costs. Research also indicates that Centers of Excellence r e d u c e m o r t a l i t y a n d i m p r o ve patient satisfaction. Surgery can feel intimidating to many patients. At Baylor Scott & White – Arlington, you can have assurance that your hospital adheres to the highest standards of safety with a consistent history of positive results.

Then, through hard work, determination, and an unwavering commitment to family, they make a way for themselves. As soon as they do, they set about helping others have the same abundant life they’ve built. That in a nutshell is the story of the Canales family. Sandoval and Irma Canales first relocated to the United States from Mexico in the early 90s with their nine children, five girls and four boys. They found a house and anyone in the family who was old enough to work took a job. But more than anything

L O C A L FA M I LY PAYS IT FORWARD they wanted to work together, to have a family business like they’d had in Mexico, one they could hand down to the next generation and the next. It was the oldest daughter, Sylvia, who first conceived of the idea of selling furniture. Her brothers quickly embraced her suggestion. They put together a furniture catalogue and the boys began selling to the parents of their friends. For each person who made a purchase, they asked for four references they could contact. The family members beat the pavement going door to door selling their wares, never focusing on any “nos” they heard but offering potential customers a

ARLINGTON/MANSFIELD/GRAND PRAIRIE

“FAMILY ISN’T AN IMPORTANT THING. IT’S EVERYTHING.” – MICHAEL J FOX good experience, so they might remember them, when they were ready to buy. The goal, from day one, was family unity and providing a good and stable living for everyone in the family (which is now 45 strong). That “everyone” has grown, not only as the next generation has become old enough to add their talents and energies to the business but as employees have become like family. The Canaleses are intentional about investing in those employees, teaching them how to become business owners themselves and several have left and opened their own small businesses. Everyone is family at Canales Furniture, and that includes customers many of whom have multiple generations shopping there. When a customer walks through the doors, they’re treated like family and programs like Family-to-Family reward them for referring others to Canales Furniture. They listen to their customers and implement changes they request adding manufacturers (with a total of 30 now), their own custom line, Canales Private Reserve, and in-house designers who visit customers’ homes to offer design advice and shopping services. They’ve expanded their inventory to include classic, contemporary, rustic, and even electronic furniture and installed model rooms and a fun kid’s section. But this family is more than entrepreneurial. They’re philanthropic. It would be hard to list all the community

outreach to which they lend their efforts. There’s the popular Back-to-School events where kids are invited to enjoy Disney movies, popcorn, and ice cream and leave with new school backpacks filled with school supplies. Last year, the Canaleses distributed 500 such backpacks. There’s Trunk of Treat at Halloween time and 50 to 100 turkeys given away each Thanksgiving. At Christmastime the family organizes a huge toy drive, and they can’t seem to do enough for our local first responders. Currently, they’re furnishing rooms in local fire stations where these hardworking men and women can relax in beautiful surroundings on donated recliners and sofas. And a little closer to home, they offer the Visionary Program where the children of current employees are welcomed to come and learn the business alongside their parent. One of the younger members of the family is Leonardo who at 19 is the same age as the business. The family jokes that he started working when he was still in the womb, since his mother was pregnant with him as she went door-to-door with that first furniture catalogue. “Growing up, I thought every family worked together like mine,” he said. “I thought that’s how the world worked. Our parents and grandparents made us feel like we could do anything and taught us to always look for ways to help others. Mostly, they taught us that family is the most important thing there is.” For this all-American family nothing could be truer.

IT’S DRIVE TIME PURCHASI N G A CAR FOR YOU R TE E N BY PETE ALFANO

T

he time many parents stress about has arrived. When their auto insurance rates rise like the temperature during a Texas summer, and they long for the days when their child was safely tucked away in a crib. Yes, it’s time to get that teenager a car.

First things first — can you afford to buy your teen a car? Will they contribute to the purchase price, insurance, maintenance, and gas? Do they even need a car, or is this a case of, “but all my friends are getting cars?” A teenager shouldn’t be expecting their first car to be a luxury ride. Look for a used car and find a make and model that is low maintenance and fuel-efficient. And ask for maintenance records and whether it has been in any accidents. Also, take it for an extended test drive, not just once around the dealership. Car experts recommend at least 30 minutes. This means a parent should drive the car and see how it handles before handing the keys to a teenager. If you purchase from a private seller, insist on taking the vehicle to your service provider for a complete checkup. Also, when buying a used car, you still may want one new enough to have a backup camera, blind-spot monitoring, and side door airbags to help your teenager stay as safe as possible. Buying a new car may not require the same scrutiny, and it will come with all the technological bells and whistles. But you will certainly

26

LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET

|

august 2022

want to take it on multiple test drives to see how it handles. And don’t be shy about negotiating a better price. You may also consider leasing a new car instead of purchasing one. A lot depends on how much financial flexibility parents have, given the increase in auto insurance and perhaps helping their teenager with maintenance and gas. The good part about leasing is that you can put less money down, and in some cases, practically none at all. You will have a monthly payment for a set number of years. Then the car must be turned in. If your teenager is in high school and plans to take the car to college, leasing may not be practicable as most leases are for three years and may have restrictions on total miles driven. If you can afford a down payment and the monthly loan, a new car may last your teenager for six years if properly maintained. The downside to buying a new car is that it can lose value once you drive it off the lot. There is a lot to evaluate, and parents should do their homework well ahead of time. Also, consider buying the car online from a dealer, as it could come with a discounted purchase price. And consult reputable car websites such as cars.com, Edmunds Car Finder, Kelley Blue Book, and others for invaluable information about cars you may buy.

Our mission to improve and save lives in our communities grows stronger each day, as does our appreciation for the unwavering support and partnerships from all our friends and neighbors in the DFW region.

We all know that one of the best forms of exercise is walking. All you do is open the front door and be on your way. But perhaps the most complete form of exercise is aquatics. Working out in the water can tone your muscles from head to toe, increase your strength and improve your endurance. We’re not suggesting that you will look like Jason Momoa, who plays Aquaman in the movies. You can, however, look and feel better by spending quality time in the water that doesn’t include taking a shower or bath. SKIN

deep

COMMON CONDITIONS A N D H O W T O AV O I D T H E M BY D AVID B U ICE

You may not usually think of your skin as one of your bodily organs, but it is, and it plays many vital roles. Among others, the skin helps the body retain fluids to prevent dehydration, enables you to feel sensations, guards against infections by protecting against germs and bacteria, stabilizes body temperature, and helps your body synthesize vitamin D from sun exposure.

COMMON SKIN DISORDERS Like any other organ, the skin is susceptible to diseases caused by things that inflame, irritate, or clog your skin. Aside from skin cancer, the following are among the more common skin disorders, including some that are temporary and others that are more lasting.

ACNE This is a very common skin condition that causes pimples on the face, forehead, chest, shoulders, and upper back. Acne most commonly affects teenagers, and causes include stress, fluctuating hormone levels, high humidity, and the use of oily or greasy skincare products.

ECZEMA Also known as atopic dermatitis, eczema most often develops in childhood but can appear in adults. It may cause rashes around the face, scalp, neck, elbows, ankles, or legs. There is no known cure for eczema, though sometimes it resolves on its own. Medications to relieve its symptoms are available.

PSORIASIS This is an autoimmune disorder, and typical symptoms include itchy patches of skin that have an unusual

82

appearance. In people with white skin, psoriasis typically appears as areas of red or pink skin with white scales. It may appear as gray, violet, or dark brown patches for African Americans. It can be treated with various medications.

ROSACEA This fairly common skin disorder affects about 14 million Americans and is characterized by redness on the nose, chin, cheeks, and forehead. Over the years, the redness may become more noticeable, and small blood vessels may become visible. It appears more commonly in women than men, although it tends to be more severe in men. The cause of rosacea is unclear and is a subject of debate in the medical community. Genetics may play a role as a family history of rosacea increases the likelihood of suffering from the disorder.

VITILIGO Pronounced vit-il-EYE-go, this disorder causes white patches to appear on the skin when the skin cells that produce melanin, the chemical that gives skin its color, are destroyed by the body’s immune system. Sometimes the patches widen and spread, but commonly they stay in the same place for years. There is no cure for vitiligo, and medical treatment often involves either restoring skin color through repigmentation or eliminating the remaining color through depigmentation.

OPTIONS FOR RESHAPING AND REFINING YOUR NOSE BY A N N ET TE BROOKS

Even a tiny adjustment to your nose can significantly change your appearance. So, it’s no surprise that a transformative, highlycustomizable, long-lasting procedure like rhinoplasty — also known as nose job or nose surgery — is one of the most popular facial plastic surgeries. Although rhinoplasty isn’t a magic cure-all, you might feel more selfassured and confident with a more flattering, proportionate, reshaped nose. People seek cosmetic rhinoplasty for various reasons, including: Narrow a wide bridge Reshape a bumpy bridge Refine the shape of the tip Smooth general bumps, indentations, asymmetries

YOUR COSMETIC CONSULTATION Rhinoplasty is one of the most complex cosmetic surgeries and demands unparalleled expertise. Schedule consultations with at least three experienced, reputable, boardcertified plastic or facial cosmetic surgeons with a well-proven track record performing rhinoplasty. Prepare for your consultation by considering your goals for reshaping your nose, including psychological and cosmetic factors. Find images of nose shapes that appeal to you and bring them to your consultation. Keep in mind that while you may want a replica of a particular celebrity’s nose, it may not be

proportional to your facial structure. Bringing your nose into balance and harmony with your facial features helps ensure an outcome that looks natural. Your surgeon will discuss proportion with you, answer questions, review options and recommendations, and walk you through the details of your surgery and the recovery process. Be open to realistic expectations and have an honest discussion with your surgeon. Ask to browse before-and-after galleries of their actual rhinoplasty patients, particularly those with similar features to your own. Expect your surgeon to take photographs of your face and nose, then use technology that allows you to preview various nose styles on your face in 3D. While these images can’t guarantee that your outcome will look exactly like the 3D image, they should be reasonably close. Discuss what results may be possible and appropriate for you with the surgeon as you view your pictures.

THE PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY Rhinoplasty is an outpatient surgery that usually lasts one-and-a-half to three hours. General anesthesia is typically used, although your surgeon may provide the option of local anesthesia with sedation depending on the extent of the procedure. The adjustments your surgeon makes to your nose and the techniques used depend on your goals for your appearance and your unique facial anatomy. Your surgeon will go through these with you during your consultation. When the surgery is complete and the incisions are closed, a splint and possibly nasal packing may be used to support the healing tissues. Carefully follow the recovery and care instructions provided. Expect your nose to be swollen and bruised, and you may experience bruising around your eyes which will fade in about a week. Results are visible in a few weeks after the swelling subsides. However, your final nose shape may not be completely visible for up to a year after surgery once everything is fully healed, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

What is a Liquid Nose Job? Injectable dermal fillers are popular alternatives to traditional plastic surgery. O n e u s e gro w in g in popu l ar i t y i s a liq uid nose job (nonsurgical rhinoplasty). Dermal fillers are injected into the nose to alter its shape during the procedure, and results are instant with little to no downtime. Nonsurgical nose jobs can address isolated nose deformities, such as a hump in the bridge or minor asymmetries. They also enable you to tr y out a reshaped nose and determine whether you want to undergo rhinoplasty. W hen considering a liquid nose job, keep in mind the results are temporar y, lasting anywhere from four to five months to a year or more, depending on the filler used. Also, injecting filler adds volume to the nose. Although there are techniques to create the illusion of a smaller nose, a liquid nose job may not be the right option if your goal is to decrease your nose size.

ON THE

surface W H AT C O U N T E R T O P IS RIGHT FOR YOU? BY COURTNEY WARREN

Many of my interior design clients are opting to update their homes instead of moving. Frequently, the kitchen is the first room on the list. New cabinets, backsplash, and appliances can take a space from eyesore to exquisite. Surprisingly, almost all kitchen renovators (91% according to recent research from realtor.com) agree that countertop changes are in order. Updated countertops can change the entire look and functionality of the space and are a worthwhile investment to elevate a kitchen design. Not sure where to st ar t? These are some of my preferred options.

QUARTZ For a high-end kitchen, hearty quartz is the optimal choice. Almost half of new renovations include this engineered stone for its ease and varied color selection. Like the Energizer Bunny of countertops, it does not need to be sealed and can withstand heat, scratches, or stains. With various finishes to replicate natural stone, this is a low-maintenance option with a clean appearance. It is comparable in price to granite.

MARBLE On the other hand, one of the most popular and beautiful stones, marble, is also the highest maintenance. When I hunted for kitchen countertops in my last home, I longed for the delicate veining of Carrera Marble. Still, I hesitated to purchase it because of its reputation for being high maintenance. Thus, many contractors will steer you away from sensitive stone because it can “etch” if an acidic substance spills on it and shows imperfections plainly. My best friend had just installed this marble in her kitchen, so I consulted her advice. “We have decided that we will embrace the limitations of marble. I am fine if it etches because it is part of the character. I am not going to live my life worrying about my kitchen countertop.” This healthy outlook suddenly empowered me with newfound freedom. I moved forward with the marble choice, loved the look, and hardly noticed when there were imperfections.

GRANITE Several years ago, granite was the go-to option for high-end homes. While other materials have become popular, granite is still a solid contender when choosing a countertop. It is second to the most used behind quartz. Granite has the beauty of a natural stone and, when sealed correctly, can be durable against heat, stains, or scratches. My advice when using granite is to consider the markings and choose a backsplash that compliments it. For instance, if your granite has a lot of movement, choose a simple, solid tile for the backsplash, so it complements, not competes, with the busy look of the slab.

BUTCHER BLOCK When I chose marble for my kitchen, I opted for a butcher block on my oversized island. I love the rustic undertones that wood introduces. And from a practical standpoint, it is a very sturdy workspace. I used the wood countertop just as I would a cutting board and allowed the scuffs and wear to contribute to the patina of the home. Behind quartz and granite, butcher block is the third most popular choice by home renovators.

MULCH AND COMPOST The decomposing elements that make compost good can be bad for pets, according to the National Garden Society. Keep compost in a secure container or fenced-off area so pets can’t get to it. Cocoa mulch can be a particular problem for dogs. A byproduct of chocolate production, cocoa mulch can cause digestive issues and even seizures in dogs. Shredded pine or cedar mulch is a safer choice.

FERTILIZER AND INSECTICIDES The chemicals used to get rid of pests or make your lawn lush can be toxic to pets. Some of the most dangerous pesticides include snail bait with metaldehyde, fly bait with methomyl, systemic insecticides with disyston or disulfoton, mole or gopher bait with zinc phosphide, and most forms of rat poison, according to the ASPCA. Follow all instructions carefully, and store pesticides and fertilizers in a secure area out of the reach of animals.

FLEAS AND TICKS In addition to using appropriate flea and tick prevention methods such as collars and sprays, make sure your yard isn’t a welcoming environment for these pests. Keep the lawn trimmed and remove brush and detritus, where fleas and ticks often lurk. Fleas can cause hair loss, scabs, excessive scratching, tapeworms, and anemia. Ticks can do all of that, plus bring you and your family in contact with diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease. If you believe your animal may have ingested a poisonous substance, contact your local veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour emergency poison hotline at (888) 426-4435. HOW TO PICK THE BEST EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY FOR YOUR CHILD

S

B Y AU D R E Y S E L L E R S

chool is almost back in session, which means you can soon expect to see enrollment flyers and registration forms coming home in your kids’ backpacks. No doubt, many of these forms will promote extracurricular activities. From soccer and science club to music and math club, there’s an extracurricular activity to suit nearly every kid’s interests and talents. But how do you pick the best ones for your child? Here are some helpful pointers for your search.

Collaborate With Your Kids Choosing an activity that aligns with what your children want to do is essential. Sit down with them and ask them what sport, club, or activity sounds fun or exciting to them. Remember that your children may not share your same love of softball or piano — and that’s okay.

Consider Your Kids’ Natural Strengths Maybe your child can run like the wind or shoot hoops like a pro. Or maybe your kid has some serious skills in singing or painting. Think about where their natural talents would shine in an

94

LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET

|

august 2022

extracurricular activity, and then sign them up for the group that fits best.

Think About Time Commitments Depending on your kids’ ages, they may have a heavy amount of homework. You don’t want to overbook their schedules, so they don’t have ample time to study or sleep. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, most teens need eight to 10 hours of sleep each night, while younger kids need nine to 12 hours of shuteye. Also, consider how your kids will get to their various activities. While teens may be able to drive themselves, younger children will need transportation.

Try a Trial Run Some extracurricular activities let kids try out a free class or session before fully committing. You and your children could also go and watch a game or sit in on an activity to see if it’s something they would enjoy.

Remember the Benefits When choosing the best extracurricular activity for your children, consider what they’ll gain from the experience. For younger kids, participating in extracurricular activities could help them build confidence and boost their social skills. The benefits for older kids could include learning more about themselves and improving their time-management skills. Support Your Kids’ Choices It may take some time for your children to find the right activity. Sometimes, a sport or club doesn’t turn out to be a great fit. It can be counterproductive to force your kids to continue something that distresses or doesn’t interest them. Instead, try to find a balance between teaching your children the importance of commitment while also helping them find something that suits them better.

A New Start The start of a new school year means new opportunities for kids to grow their skills and social circles. The American Academy of Pediatrics says most children are ready to participate in extracurricular activities like sports by age six. Consider the points above to help make the smartest extracurricular selections for your children.

Where to Start While each school and community offer different extracurricular activities, here’s a sample of some possible opportunities for your children:

• Team sports like football or volleyball • Individual sports like swimming or golf • Music-forward extracurricular activities like concert band or school choir

• Performance arts like dance or theater • Scouting groups • Arts-based extracurricular activities like art club or ceramics club

• Special interest groups like chess club or horticulture club

• Social activism groups like an animal rights club or fair-trade club

• Religious extracurricular activities like church youth groups or mission work

• Martial arts like karate or jiu-jitsu • Military extracurricular activities like Junior ROTC

• Volunteering activities like helping at an

Tree Talk FOUR TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL PLANTING

T

rees are virtually everywhere you turn, from your backyard to nearby parks and forests. They provide shade and beauty, and some even bear fruit.

When you plant a tree in your yard or neighborhood, that tree goes to work filtering out pollutants, intercepting stormwater, and capturing carbon. With proper placement, that tree can also help lower household energy use by as much as 20%. Here are a few tips to make your planting endeavor successful.

Consider the Growing Region Choosing a tree that will flourish in your region is fundamental to success. Start by getting familiar with the growing conditions of your planting site, including factors like sunlight, soil condition, and room to grow. The available sunlight will determine which tree species will thrive. Most trees require full sunlight for proper growth and flowering. Some do well in (or even prefer) partial or light shade, but few perform well in dense shade. Before you plant, get your soil tested by a lab to evaluate what’s happening underground. Test results are usually returned in a couple of weeks and provide a complete analysis of nutrients, possible contamination, pH (alkalinity or acidity), and directions for correcting problems.

96

LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET

august 2022

Be conscious of overhead or underground utilities, pavement, buildings, other trees, traffic intersections, and other factors that may impact your planting space.

Shopping for a Tree When choosing a tree, be mindful of details like size, flowering, color (including how colors may vary through the seasons), and your view from inside the house. Two common trees are container-grown trees, which spend their entire nursery lives growing in a container, and ball-andburlap trees, which grow in the ground until they achieve a targeted size. A well-tended container-grown tree has been carefully monitored and moved into larger containers as the plant grows. Be wary of a tree with roots that circle or twist within the container, which may cause roots to die. For a ball-and-burlap tree, look for a firm, securely tied root ball that is large enough to support the mature tree. It should be about 10 to 12 inches wide for every inch of trunk diameter.

Prepare Your Planting Site Properly preparing your planting site is one of the best things you can do to get your tree off to a strong start. Before planting, ensure your tree is thoroughly hydrated by watering the container or root ball several hours before proceeding. When planting into a lawn, remove a circle of grass at least 3 feet in diameter where the tree will go to reduce competition between turf and fine tree roots.

Start Digging

THE POWER OF TREES From backyards to tropical rainforests, trees provide the necessities of life. Trees clean air and water, provide habitats for wildlife, connect communities and support human health. • Trees are a proven, affordable, natural way to pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. • Trees provide shade, cooling cities by up to 10 degrees, which can help prevent heat-related deaths. • Neighborhood trees can reduce stress, improve children’s overall health, and encourage physical activity. • Trees support wildlife and aquatic life by providing habitats and helping keep water ways healthy, which ensures ecosystem balance and promotes biodiversity. • Trees and other forest life work together to ensure a clean source of drinking water, buffer against extreme weather, offer outdoor recreation, and enrich human culture.

A HANDY GUIDE

Dig a wide, shallow planting hole with gently sloping sides 3 to 4 times wider than the diameter of the root mass and the same depth. Mound removed soil on a tarp for easy backfilling. Loosening the dirt on the sides of the hole allows roots to expand and establish faster but be sure not to disturb the soil at the bottom of the hole.

Now is the Time for Trees is an inspirational and informative guide that explains the vital role trees can play in preserving the environment.

Once the tree is positioned, replace the soil while firmly but gently tamping the original soil around the base of the root ball to stabilize it. Create a water-holding basin around the tree by building up a ring of soil and water to settle roots. Spread protective mulch 2 to 4 inches deep in a 3-foot diameter around the tree’s base but not touching the trunk.

Author Dan Lambe, CEO of the Arbor Day Foundation, offers compelling reasons to plant more trees while providing simple, actionable steps to get involved, choose the right tree and achieve planting success. For each book sold, the foundation will plant a tree in a forest in need.

My husband and I surround ourselves with friends who share our passion for adventure. In celebration of several milestones, twenty of us made the 500-mile trek to the wild west Ghost Town of Terlingua. We planned to make Basecamp Terlingua our village for the week, take in the panoramic views of the Chisos Mountains, canoe the Rio Grande, and enjoy some of the best stargazing Texas has to offer.

If you want to break up the long drive, spend the night in Marfa. Just two hours northwest of Terlingua, this middle-of-nowhere arts hub is known for its galleries and outdoor art installations. You can explore the many art galleries and boutiques, many of which are run by New York City transplants. Depending on when you visit, many galleries are open by appointment only. Hotels.com now offers “Airbnb style” rentals, where a home is split into several room rentals

with a private bath sharing a communal kitchen. Be sure to snap a picture in front of the renowned Prada storefront just 20 minutes outside of town. Kick back with the locals with some nachos and a cold brew at Planet Marfa. When we asked an older local gentleman one not-to-miss thing on our 24-hour visit, his reply was, “If you don’t go see the Marfa Lights, I’ll shoot you.” The Marfa Lights are a mysterious phenomenon of glowing orbs appearing in the night’s sky outside the west Texas town. There is a viewing area just outside of town, but there is no way to predict when the lights will appear. They have been seen in various weather conditions, but only on a dozen or so nights each year. There are many theories, but nobody knows for sure what they are or if they really exist.

TEXAS MINING Terlingua is a retired mining district, now semi-ghost-town (there are no streetlights, so bring a flashlight), located near the Rio Grande and the Mexican st ate of Chihuahua. Once cinnabar (the chief ore minera l of mercur y) was discovered in the mid-1880s, the area slowly transformed into a mining district and eventually a community that supported the operation and mine workers. In May of 1903, the Chisos Mining Company was founded by a Chicago industrialist. World War I was a peak time for quicksilver production, and the area was the richest mercury mining region in North America. The mine operated until 1943, producing 100,000 fl asks of quicksilver. You can grab a brochure from the General Store with a self-guided tour of what remains from that era. Be sure to check out the local cemetery, one of the most photographed graveyards in the country. With a population of 110, this may be the only Texas town where the dead outnumber the living.

THINGS TO DO Terlingua is located between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. Hiking, rafting, horseback riding, mountain biking, camping, and jeeping are some of the activities favored by tourists here. There are several local outfitters eager to show you the wonders of Big Bend National Park. Our group enjoyed a kayaking adventure with Big Bend Boating and Hiking Company. Big Bend offers a wide range of activities from guided raft and paddle trips, hiking, camping and horse-back riding adventures. Our guides were very knowledgeable and a lot of fun. While on our kayaking adventure, we stopped on the Mexico side of the Rio Grande, took a break, and waded in the refreshingly cool water. There are a few restaurants in town, but you must visit the Starlight Theatre. The theatre was built in the 1930s as the town movie theatre during the heyday of quicksilver mining. It lives on today as the only fi ne dining restaurant in Terlingua. The cocktails are flowing, with a selection of meat butchered in-house. Try the chicken-fried antelope. You can also enjoy live music entertainment throughout the week.

Rio Grande, Big Bend National Park

No matter if you are getting away as a group, exploring as a family, or taking a long-needed couples’ trip, the road to Terlingua has something for the adventurous at heart.

The First Chili Cook-off You can catch the Original Terlingua International Championship Chili Cookoff on the first Saturday of November each year. What started as a small contest between two cooks (one from New York and one from Texas) to settle a dispute over “who does it better” has turned into 50-plus years of tradition. Now the largest chili cook-off in the world, thousands of people flock to Terlingua for the hot, red meaty goodness.

Desert Spirits Sotol is a liquor distilled from the Sotol (Dasylirion) plant, native to the Chihuahuan Desert of Mexico. You can spot the plant shooting up along the rock walls of the Rio Grande. Sotol has a distinctive smoky flavor, similar to Mezcal.
