Sleeping NEVER FELT

SO GOOD!

SAY GOODBYE TO SNORING! Whether you’re the one doing it or the one who has to listen to it all night, snoring can interfere with the restful sleep that’s so important for optimal health and wellness. It may even be a sign of a more serious problem: sleep apnea. If left untreated, this sleep-related breathing disorder can cause daytime exhaustion, headaches, memory loss and even affect your heart. If you are a chronic snorer or have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, a custom-made oral appliance from Dr. Sandi Hamm’s dental office may be all you need to finally get a good night’s rest. Contact Dr. Sandi Hamm at 817-477-4441 to schedule a FREE consultation!

Mother’s Day! I’ve always loved this precious holiday when we reflect on and honor the women who represented the mother in our lives. What stands out about my mom to me is her amazing cooking talent. To this day, she won’t cook anything from a box or package. I remember the smell of her fried chicken and biscuits and gravy. And her banana pudding is still unmatched. She took us kids to countless baseball, football, and cheerleading events. She volunteered at community haunted houses and concession stands and would do anything for us. How many times did I hear how she looked like the actress Angie Dickinson—and she never looked a day over 29? To this day, I tell her she is still 29 in my eyes. The most beautiful thing about my mom today is her love for Jesus and her daily walk with Him. There’s nothing like seeing her filled with peace and joy, no matter what life throws her way. Mom, thank you for putting up with all the pranks I played on you, through the years. Especially when I put catsup all over myself and faked a bicycle crash. You’re my hero. I honor you and I love you, Mom..

Community Service Opportunity!! There are more than 15,800 students in the Mansfield ISD eligible for the free or reduced meal program during the school year that keeps them fed and gives them the best opportunity for learning. But what happens during the summer when these same students don’t have access to the program that keeps them from going hungry during the school year? Each summer, the Feed the Kids Program, a joint effort of Common Ground Network, MISD Nutrition Department, and many local Churches, businesses and civic organizations, provide food for students so they can have enough to eat during summer vacation. The program needs volunteers that can help unload food from cases and fill bags that will then go to the

local food pantries. Volunteers unload cases of food every Wednesday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. and assemble bags each Wednesday evening from 6 to 7 p.m. These volunteers will work every Wednesday from May 22 to Aug. 7 at the Mansfield Cares Warehouse located here in Mansfield at 150 S. 6th Ave. The Volunteers for this Program quickly discover that although they are volunteering their time to Bless the less fortunate, in reality, the Volunteers are truly Blessed as well! Please help by volunteering or donating to this worthwhile Program. This Program is another example of the spirit of giving that makes our Community one of America’s Best Places to Live.

We can expect new construction on the Lake Joe Pool peninsula through 2020. On the northeast end, Lake Ridge Commons will develop: • 98 homes from $400K; • 100 townhomes $275K-$325K; • and condos above retail. Across the street, a 4,000-square-foot QuickStop convenience store will be built, with retail space, open this summer. Beside the QuickStop will be the Mansions of Grand Prairie luxury apartments. The Mansions include retail/restaurant space on the ground floor. Permits are issued.

Here are some encouraging numbers. Last year, the City of Arlington repaired and eliminated over 11,000 potholes. Each monthly, our citizens turn in over 2,000 tons of recyclables. The average 911 call in The American Dream City is answered within 10 seconds. And this past year, our city’s building inspectors inspected home on average, within 24 hours. Those are numbers we can all be proud of. If it’s been awhile since you visited the ArlingtonTX.gov website, I hope you’ll stop by and browse our new, revamped site. We’ve redesigned it to make it even more user-friendly, robust, and responsive. The site provides easier access to city services, with a greater degree of transparency for you. GRA ND PRAI RI E On the southeast end, the Mira Lagos Townhomes North will open mid 2020. These 125 high-end townhomes start at $275,000, are age 55+ and gated. Mira Lagos Townhomes South are also under construction. These 87 units are high-end, and not age restricted. Serving the city’s lake sector, an expanded Warmack Library just reopened. Our libraries have been reborn as relentlessly relevant community connectors that educate everyone. The library doubled its space, adding two program rooms, a teen center, study rooms and a new Children’s library. Live Life Grand,

One can hardly discuss 1990s comedies without mentioning the twisted baby-stepping of What About Bob?, which introduced us to the unlikely duo of Dreyfuss (self-centered psychoanalyst Dr. Leo Marvin) and Murray (good-natured but clingy patient Bob Wiley), whose reported off-screen friction only makes the on-screen dysfunction more hilarious.

STEVEN THOMAS, DDS, PC

Providing Smiles that Last a Lifetime BY MEREDITH KNIGHT PHOTOS BY LAUREN MEDEAN

o matter where he is, who he’s with, or what he’s doing, Dr. Steven Thomas just enjoys being with people. How blessed he is, then, to have chosen a profession that allows him to get to know his patients personally and partner with them in their oral wellness journey. Since 1983, his practice has been the goto location for full-service dental care in a warm, inviting space. Integrity, empathy, and following God’s lead are the hallmarks of his practice. “My team helps me keep everything patient-centered,” he said. “We’re treating our friends, family, and neighbors. And I’m proud of the love and compassion my staff extends to each patient. Our goal is for your entire experience with us to exceed your expectations. My team truly makes my job a pleasure.”

DENTIST FEAR? Dr. Thomas says many of us carry “dental baggage”. Past experiences have developed a fear or dread of sitting in the dentist’s chair. “That fear is very real,” Dr. Thomas said. “I get it. Unfortunately, fear can keep some people from taking preventative steps to keep small little dental issues from becoming big problems. For those patients, I need to slow things down and offer them a chance to talk about what they’re feeling. My staff and I explain each treatment plan and give nervous patients the opportunity to ask questions, before we proceed. For our younger patients, we’re committed to doing everything we can to help them develop a positive impression of the dentist, from the start, so they never know what it’s like to be nervous or anxious about a visit.”

Lori, have a blended family of five children ranging in age from 18-33 and four delightful grandchildren. Outside of their busy professional lives they love to travel, play golf, try new restaurants, and spend time with family and friends. Walnut Ridge Baptist Church is an integral part of the Thomases family life. Lori is a member of the Walnut Ridge choir and praise and worship team. Steven serves as a greeter and was recently ordained a deacon, which he says is a humbling experience. He especially enjoys attending Tuesday night Bible study fellowship and Wednesday morning small group, before seeing his 7:00 a.m. patients. “These studies fuel and equip me for the challenges of day-to-day life,” he said. “Lori and I are thankful for the small part they’re able to play in the ministries supported by our

a

As Mother’s Day approaches, I find myself reflecting on motherhood and areas of my life that need improvement. Ah, who am I kidding? It has nothing to do with Mother’s Day and everything to do with my only-child perfectionist tendencies of over-analyzing every interaction every night when I turn out the light. I know I’m not alone. Many of you surely pull the covers to your chin as you wrap yourself in guilt, shame, and condemnation for not living up to the image you’ve created as the “perfect mother.” Here’s a newsflash: there is no perfect mother. Some of you have already grasped that reality and are happily settling into the mothering techniques unique to your gifts and talents, tailor-made for your family. And some of you might still struggle to know whether or not you’re doing it “right.” I’ve been a natural mother for 15 years and am still learning. I say “natural mother” because it is important for every woman to realize you are a mother even if you’ve never given birth, adopted, or fostered. Women have been innately granted an ability to nurture, to counsel, to extend grace and mercy. It’s important to the health of society that women embrace who we’re called to be, in spite of the voices screaming otherwise. The comparison trap is larger than life with the prevalence of social media and endless information at our fingertips. Former executives at Facebook can be heard in the YouTube video “You Won’t Believe What They Did” describing their work on social media sites and explaining how their primary intention was to create platforms that beckoned users to stay on their sites as long as possible. Social media is specifically designed to trigger feelings that lead to addiction. Our seeming realities are now linked to the phones in our hands while our true realities disintegrate into a pile of ashes, full of regrets, opportunities for meaningful relationships lost forever. This is where my focus lands at the end of every day, and this is an actual problem in need of a solution. We are created for relationships—with God and with others. Every commandment was reduced to one statement by Jesus, “Love God, love others.” How can we do either if we are not present in the present? A few years ago I watched the movie Transcendence. I’m a sci-fi lover, so

I enjoyed the film, which in my opinion was really a love story. The primary plot revolves around a character played by Johnny Depp who is dying from some incurable disease, so he wants to be uploaded into cyberspace where his consciousness can live forever. As you might imagine, this doesn’t end well, and ultimately in order for the world to gain control back from artificial intelligence, they are forced to destroy the Internet altogether. I cannot tell you how often I’ve wished for that scenario—to awake one day and find that the Internet is no more. I know it’s foolishness. We all depend upon the utility of the Internet, and my businesses are driven by social media marketing. Our modern society could not continue if we were suddenly and indefinitely unplugged. And yet I long for the simple days of Little House on the Prairie. Yes, life in so many respects was harder, but they were present. They lived in the moment, with meaningful human interaction and realities filled with tangible experiences. They built lives together. A few months back I read the book How to Break Up with Your Phone. I then downloaded an app called Quality Time to track my phone usage. I was shocked—I was using my phone for 5 to 6 hours on some days! It’s stealing my time, and worse yet, the precious little time I have with my children—who won’t be under my roof forever. While our lists of things to do grow longer and our desire to be “perfect mothers” never quite goes away, there’s a very real problem here—a problem many of us face every day—that we can actually solve. More than anything in the world, our children want us! They desire quality time with face-to-face interaction, not distracted answers while staring at our phones. Play a board game, fly a kite, have a picnic. Remember the simple life and do all you can to embrace the moment right in front of you. Let’s pray for one another to be present in the present. It’s truly the greatest gift we can give our children and those around us. Happy Mother’s Day to every woman everywhere! You are chosen. You are blessed. You are loved and have so much love to give!

SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO GET THE BEST FOR YOUR NEST BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT

HIRE A PRO MOST HOUSES THAT ARE FOR SALE BY OWNER END UP LOSING MORE for their owner than they saved in real estate agent commission. Don’t go it alone. Do your homework and find a real estate agent who’s selling homes, selling them fast, and selling them for a good price. STEP BACK YOUR HOME IS A PLACE WHERE YOU’VE MADE COUNTLESS MEMORIES. But now is the time to stand back and look at each room as though through a stranger’s eyes. Try to see the spaces like you’re seeing them for the first time. If they appear cluttered or unattractive, make the changes you need to make so they give the visual impression that will attract a top-dollar buyer. EVALUATE IT’S EASY TO DO TOO MUCH. To avoid selecting the wrong things to improve or renovate before listing your home, take a moment to ask yourself if your project adds tangible value or a selling point to the home. Will your intended renovations be of

broad appeal? Stick to known, appreciated improvements and avoid getting too esoteric. Remember, you’re improving the house for the next owner, not for yourself. DECLUTTER YOUR HOME HAS ONE CHANCE TO MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION. Put in some time making your rooms look clutterfree and organized. (That includes closets and cupboards where potential buyers often peek.) Remove items from your kitchen and bathroom counters. Clear shelves of knick-knacks. Leave nothing on the floors but floor coverings and furniture. Pack away your collectibles and leave only a few tasteful items to create a simplified and calm atmosphere. Stow toothbrushes, products, and implements out of sight. If you have so much furniture that your rooms appear crowded, get some of It out of there. CLEAN A CLEAN HOME CAN REALLY APPEAL TO BUYERS. Windows should be clean and clear inside and out.

Bathrooms sanitized and scrubbed until sparkling. Faucets and fixtures polished to gleaming. Don’t neglect things like shower door tracks. If you don’t have the time or inclination to do it yourself, hire professionals and

REALTOR JULIE SHORT COMMITTED, COMPASSIONATE, CONNECTED BY MEREDITH KNIGHT PHOTOS BY LAUREN MARIE

“Remaining thankful and prayerful throughout any transaction helps me find the little things I can do to make any process smooth and enjoyable for my clients. Julie Short realizes it sounds cliché to claim she loves selling real estate because she loves helping people. But what can she say? It’s the truth. “I understand how stressful buying or selling a home can be,” she said. “It’s often the largest financial investment a family will make. As a realtor, I’m in a unique position to look for—and find—ways to reduce that stress and make my clients lives easier throughout the real estate process. Many of them are shocked to see that my team and I can even make buying or selling a home fun—really!” Julie didn’t originally set out to become a realtor. As the wife of a successful homebuilder, she thought it might be helpful for her to understand the real estate business. She was as surprised as anyone to realize she’d found her calling in helping families find and afford their dream home. “Over the years, I’ve developed a knack for viewing the issues that crop up, not as problems, but as a challenge, as I figure out a way to make the deal work, rather than getting frustrated and wanting to give up. It has helped me become more tenacious and persistent. And believe me, my job never gives me the chance to get bored.” In fact, Julie still gets excited about every deal. “It can be so easy to get flustered throughout the labyrinth that is realty,” Julie said. “But remaining thankful and prayerful throughout any transaction helps me find the little things I can do to make the process smoother and more enjoyable for my client. And I’ve been abundantly blessed with clients who recommend me and who call me for their next purchase—and their next. It’s very rewarding to be

taking and connected in the community and world of real estate to give you the best exposure and the best options.” There are misconceptions about realty Julie would like to clear up. “Some buyers still think it costs to have me represent them,” she said. “But I don’t charge a transaction fee or any other fees for my service as a buyer’s representative. Others think once a realtor gets a contract they just sit back and wait until closing… NOT. Marketing and selling a home is a lot more work than most people realize.”

dream of becoming a published author, with the publication of her first book, Cleaning Your House in Minutes a Day. She’s now hard at work on her second book, The Truth About God. “I really want to simplify things and I passionately want people to know how much God loves them,” she said.

When not helping local families buy and sell homes, Julie serves as a city councilwoman in Mansfield. She’s also active at Living Church where she serves as a prayer partner, greeter, and elder. As a board member for the Mansfield Education Foundation Board, she helps raise funds and provide grants to teachers and students throughout the district. Last December, Julie realized a lifelong

I understand the process and know what should be happening and how it should look along the way. I also have a good idea of what change orders and add-ons should cost, so my client gets a reasonable price.” Julie says she’s also blessed with a team that embraces her philosophy of being committed, compassionate, and connected. “Committed to give you the best service,” Julie said, “compassionate for the often life-changing steps you’re

AMANDA F. LOST 23.4 POUNDS IN 10 WEEKS AT DSC. LIVES IN CRANDALL, TX

“To be honest, I have never been on a diet or even considered modifications in my eating habits until recently. I broke my foot and had to have it surgically repaired over the fall. I ended up being non-weight bearing for months drastically decreasing my activity. I thought I was doing right by changing how much or what I ate, but I put myself into starvation mode and overall decreased my health, physically and mentally. My friend mentioned Diet Solution to me, and I was highly skeptical so we called together. I went to the consultation and this was the best decision I could have made. In ten weeks, I lost 24 pounds and over five inches on my waist. Now, I have ample amount of energy, my foot has healed, and due to being at a healthy weight and eating properly, I feel confident I will continue to succeed in my goals. Heather and the staff have been nothing but supportive. This journey has not felt like i'm going to an appointment or to see a clinician. The Burleson center has welcomed my family to be involved. In fact, their educational tools have impacted my house hold and co-workers. Their approach is individualized and super effective. I do not view this as a diet. I see it as another took for your toolbox to enable yourself to reach your goals, improve your overall health, gain lifelong knowledge, and impact others.”

DESK YOGA FOR YOUR WORKDAY Let’s do the twist. Sit straight with both feet on the floor. Bend your elbows until your arms form a 45-degree angle. Inhale slowly and deeply. As you exhale, twist to one side, using your lower spine. Hold the armrest on that side. Maintain that position for 5 deep breaths. Repeat on the opposite side. Be a forward thinker. From a straight seated position, place your arms behind your lower back. With fingers interlaced, bend forward from the waist. As you bend forward, lift your hands over your back. Hold for 10 breaths. Return to the fold. Stand with feet at shoulders width apart. Your knees should be loose. Bend forward at the waist and allow gravity to pull you forward. Your arms, head, and shoulders should all be loose. Hold this position for 25 seconds. This is ideal for relieving tension.

BASIC EXERCISES YOU CAN DO AT YOUR DESK Leg, we have liftoff! Sit upright. Straighten one leg so that it’s parallel to the floor. Hold that position for a count of ten. Do the same with the opposite leg. Continue the process for fifteen to twenty repetitions. What are you weighting for? Using two filled water bottles as weights, do some simple arm curls and overhead presses.

POSTURE 101 Take a stand.

30

Use the balls of your feet to bear the majority of your weight.

Keep knees slightly bent.

Tuck in your stomach.

Shift your weight from your toes to your heels.

Pull your shoulders back.

Don’t push your head forward.

HARD CORE BASICS

Pull up a chair.

Having a strong core is about more than rock-hard abs. In fact, the core is made up of muscles that run the entire length of the torso. A strong core can help alleviate back pain, improve posture, reduce injury, and improve digestion. It even boosts metabolism! Core building exercises offer benefits to everyone, including (and especially) people who spend most of the day behind a desk.

Keep your feet on the floor.

Keep your knees at or below the level of your hips.

Do not sit in the same position for long periods of time.

Relax your shoulders.

Adjust your chair’s backrest to support your lower back.

Keep your computer screen at eye level to avoid hunching your back.

Scharles Konadu believes in teamwork between doctors, patients, and caregivers. She also believes that the service she provides—to her patients and her patients’ families—can mean the difference between life and death. As a gastroenterologist, Dr. Konadu specializes in the management of the health of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. She also offers medical treatment options for many conditions including colon polyps, hepatitis, gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn), peptic ulcer disease, colitis, biliary tract disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and pancreatitis. “I approach every patient with the perspective that we are working together as a team,” Dr. Konadu said. “Some gastrointestinal symptoms can be personal or embarrassing, so it’s important for me to do everything I can to make the patient feel comfortable while working together towards a solution and seeing them through whatever may be happening. Also, on our healthcare team are my patients’ families and other caregivers and providers. Together we can do what’s best for the patient.” If there was one message, Dr. Konadu could shout from the rooftops, it would be not to neglect routine screening colonoscopies. “No, it’s not fun,” she said. “It’s not pleasant or something anybody wants to talk about. But it’s one of the greatest things you can do for yourself—and for the people who love you and count on you. And it can absolutely save your life.”

Dr. Konadu came to the south Fort Worth area from Duke Raleigh Hospital, in Durham, North Carolina where she practiced as an attending physician and gastroenterology consultant. Dr. Konadu completed her gastroenterology fellowship as well as her internal medicine residency program at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. everly Hills Rejuvenation Center (BHRC) is known for helping Hollywood celebrities, models, and even former Miss USA Ali Landry feel great and look youthful. But did you know BHRC also caters to regular people like you and me who want to experience the same age-defying results, including those of us living right here in the Metroplex? Since opening, award-winning BHRC Dallas has helped countless clients defy their age, look younger, and feel healthier. Linda is one of them. She raves about the results and her experiences at BHRC Dallas, and agrees with Ali Landry who says, “Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center is the only place I go for beauty and wellness!" Linda has been getting treatments from BHRC Dallas since they opened. “I’m young at heart and want to look the way I feel,” she says. Over the years Linda has had Coolsculpting, laser hair removal, and laser treatment around her lips to address those pesky lip lines we get as we age—all with wonderful results. She also gets “a sprinkling” of Botox to treat lines and wrinkles around her eyes and on her forehead, and B12 shots for increased energy. But as the years marched on, age began to take a toll on Linda on the inside, and her hair began thinning. “I saw dermatologists about my hair loss, but no one was much help,” Linda confides. “Then I talked to Heather and the nurse practitioner at BHRC about it. They suggested that I consider bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, which ended up being a godsend for me.” Bloodwork revealed Linda’s hormone levels were deficient. BHRC Dallas developed a customized hormone replacement plan and she gets her levels checked every two months. Based on the results, BHRC modifies her therapy plan, which is completely customized to best meet Linda’s needs. “I’m doing so much better now that I’m on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. I feel like a new person because of Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center! Even my hair is growing back!”

ALIGNMENT HOW YOU CAN HELP ENSURE YOUR CHILD’S FUTURE LINES UP PERFECTLY BY SAMANTHA GLUCK

rom Marrakech to Greece to the United States and all over the globe, people without a common language or cultural experience can still communicate powerfully through facial expression. According to psychologist and researcher Paul Ekman, our various facial expressions convey seven basic emotions.

F

WHAT’S THE MOST POWERFUL FACIAL EXPRESSION OF ALL? A SMILE. Like other facial expressions, the smile g ives people a peek into our interior world. It’s the way we express joy and happiness. Have you ever been having a bad day when suddenly someone passes you in the hallway or on the sidewalk and gives you a smile that makes everything feel better? That’s the power of a smile!

ORTHODONTICS CAN GIVE YOUR CHILD SMILE POWER Early orthodontic intervention boasts many benefits, including prevention of g um disease and tooth decay. Braces also improve speech, reduce bone loss, and resolve issues with under- and overbites. But after the braces come off, it’s actually the resulting boost in self-confidence that will do the most to improve your child’s future. Even if your child’s teeth don’t seem very crowded, getting an orthodontic evaluation is worthwhile. And if he or she is worried about how they’ll look, the orthodontist can put his or her concerns to rest by showing off new types of brackets

A few days ago, we were chatting as I made dinner and she asked about getting braces (admittedly, I’ve put off making an initial appointment). As we were ending our chat, she said, “I feel awkward and self-conscious smiling with an open mouth because of my teeth.” I can’t tell you how bad that one sentence made me feel. I called the next morning to schedule her consultation. Don’t be like me. A study by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry found that: •

MODERN ART FROM an ancient era PLASTIC SURGERY CONTINUES TO TRANSFORM BY DAVID BUICE

t may surprise you to know that plastic surgery is one of the world’s oldest healing arts. As early as 3400 BC, Egyptians practiced some forms of it, and by around 800 BC physicians in ancient India were using skin grafts for reconstructive work on some of their patients. From these primitive beginnings, over thousands of years, the practice of plastic surgery gradually and sporadically spread through Europe and eventually to America.

This technolog y allows surgeons to per for m procedures like reconstr uctive surger y on a computer using information gathered from CT scans. Then they create a 3D model of what they predict the patient will look like af ter surger y and use this model as a template during surgery.

ENDOSCOPIC FACELIFT The modern endoscope is a flexible tube with an attached camera and surgical instruments that allow surgeons to operate through very small incisions. Today plastic surgeons often use the instrument to perform an endoscopic facelift to minimize the risk of noticeable scarring. The surgeon makes small, 4-5 millimeter incisions at the temple and scalp, and then uses an endoscope with attached

instruments to lift and improve the appearance of the upper two-thirds of the face.

BREAST AUGMENTATION THROUGH FAT TRANSFER Breast aug ment ation remains popular and traditionally involves using silicone or saline implants. A recent development, fat transfer augmentation, uses liposuction to remove fat from other parts of the body to be injected into the breasts.

TISSUE EXPANSION This procedure “grows” extra skin to use in reconstructing just about any p a r t of t he b o d y. T he surgeon inserts a silicone balloon expander under the skin near the area to be repaired. The balloon is g radually f illed w ith saline or carbon dioxide, causing the skin to stretch and grow, providing added sk i n t o u se i n va r iou s cosmetic procedures.

SMARTLIPO With traditional liposuction a cannu la ( probe) removes fat from beneath t h e s k i n . I n c ont r a s t , Smartlipo uses a cannula containing a laser that heats and melts the fat and removes it in liquid form. With Smartlipo, recovery can be quicker than with traditional liposuction.

2019 AND BEYOND L ook ing to the f ut ure, many cosmetic plastic s u r ge on s b el ie ve t h at one of the main trends in their field will be providing their patients what is called a “tweak-ment.” This means an increasing number of patients want their plastic surgeon to perform micro-optimizations that provide a few refined tweaks that make them feel more confident and “touched up,” without being as obvious as other cosmetic changes.

A whole-house humidifier during dry winter months not only makes your home more comfortable, it may reduce the likelihood of respiratory infections and allergy and asthma symptoms by minimizing the formation of bacteria and viruses, fungi, and dust mites. It can also help preserve natural wood f loors, cabinetry, and furnishings. KITCHEN PERKS Love to cook? If you frequently prepare foods that require water, install a foldaway faucet on the wall above your stove. No more carrying or sliding heavy pots from the sink to the stove. And if you have deep lower cabinets, install pull out shelves to make pots and pans more easily accessible (and add some soft-close attachments for extra niceness). Calling all small kitchen appliance junkies! Add a couple of big, deep drawers in the kitchen for storage. No room in your current cabinetry configuration? Think outside the box. You may, for example, convert a rarely used breakfast nook into a handy appliance storage space. CLOSET AND LAUNDRY LOGISTICS Even if you have a small closet, a closet organization system can help you maximize space and improve organization. And don’t just reserve

these tools for bedroom closets. Any closet in your home can benefit. If your laundry space is small, the addition of a simple over the washer/dryer folding station (a counter on top of your machines) and a wall mountable, extending drying rack can make a huge difference. Or install a laundry guard to keep laundry from falling behind or off the sides of your front loading washer or dryer. If you’re lucky enough to have a dedicated laundry room with some space, plan an organization system that will streamline, simplify, and help de-stress your laundry activities. POOL POSSIBILITIES Have a pool with a simple floodlight or other basic pool lighting? Consider upgrading to LED lights. They are more energy efficient than traditional options, and an easy way to transform an ordinary pool into an eye-catching backyard oasis. LED lights can be installed below the water or anywhere in the pool area and come in different colors. If your pool is older, other upgrades to consider include robotic cleaners, automatic pool covers, and all-in-one pool automation systems, some of which can be controlled through a smartphone.

Off in the distance I can see grey rain clouds billowing over the mountains, threatening to cut my surf lesson short. The rhythmic motion of the ocean lulls me into a daze, allowing me a moment to savor my surroundings before being whisked up—only to be immediately knocked back down. Is this really what I wanted from my “relaxing” vacation?

smoothie bar and a Bloody Mary bar. It stands to reason that “Detox. Retox. Repeat.” is their official philosophy. Despite my best intentions, the retox portion of my stay is immediately peddled as I push open the door to my room only to find two Tajin-rimmed glasses, two small bottles of tequila, fresh grapefruit juice, agave, honey, lime juice, and soda, along with instructions on how to make a Piwiwi, the hotel’s house cocktail (named after a local bird). Detoxing on property could be as easy as strolling up a hill to the 4,000-square-foot spa. One can never be too relaxed on vacation, so I book a body treatment to scrub away any remaining anxieties I’ve carried with me from home. The spa has an intricate layout of therapy pools all set to varying temperatures. For the truly brave they even have a cold plunge pool set at 63 degrees. I’m not in the mood to be brave, so I relax in a hot tub underneath a towering fig tree as I wait for my massage therapist to retrieve me.

Even though Mexico is just a two hour flight from Dallas, I haven’t set foot in the country in more than a decade prior to planning this trip. My more recent travels have taken me further south in Latin America to hike the mountains of Peru, to taste wine in Argentina, and to backpack through the jungles of Colombia. But when I decided I wanted to end 2018 with a quick beach vacation I figured it was time to revisit my neighbor to the south. While arranging the trip, I’m intent on experiencing a decidedly different style of Mexican beach vacation than what I experienced in my 20s—one remembered by days spent on the beach surrounded by empty Tecate cans, and nights in dark dance clubs full of waiters holding whistles and trays of tequila shots. This time around I want to relax sans copious amounts of alcohol, experience local culture, and try something new. No longer in pursuit of an all-you-can-drink resort, I book three nights at the W Punta de Mita, 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta. The W is known for its balance of health and fun. The morning buffet features, delightfully, both a

The W is a self-contained complex with a beach, two pools, multiple restaurants and bars, and a spa. “Most of our guests never leave the resort during their stay,” says Javier Puente, the hotel’s marketing manager. That said, one of my general rules of travel is that no matter how amazing and all-inclusive your hotel stay is, you still need to leave the property. Bearing that in mind, on my second day in Mexico I head to the nearby boho surfer town of Sayulita. Like any good Latin America town there’s a central plaza playing host to wooden benches, raised planters, and palm trees surrounding a teal and pink gazebo. The central plaza is where friends stop to chat, teenagers sit closely on the benches holding hands, and children run around playing endless games of tag. It’s easy to people watch the day away sitting on a bench eating a coconut paleta.

I’m intent on experiencing a decidedly different style of Mexican beach vacation than what I experienced in my 20s

Colorful flags line the five streets that spoke off of the central plaza’s hub. The pedestrian-only street that heads to the beach is crowded with barefoot surfers, tourists on vacation, young backpackers who also seem to be on vacation (permanently?), and families with young children. Vendors line the streets selling handmade trinkets and souvenirs while the shops above the street sell surprisingly high quality artwork. Back at the hotel I expand my knowledge of local culture with The W’s culinary and

It’s a fresh, tasty, healthy dish that I learn during my class is as easy to make as letting raw fish soak in lime juice for ten minutes, cutting up cilantro, tomatoes, onions and jalapeños, then mixing everything together. I had thought I knew everything there was to know about Mexican liquors, but during a mezcal class later that evening the instructor introduces me to my new favorite liquor—raicilla. “It is a cross between mezcal and tequila,” says Viridiana Garcia, who’s running the class. Raicilla is made from an agave plant like tequila and is roasted like mezcal. It’s smoother than tequila, but not as smoky as mezcal. A long w ith explaining the

On my final day in Mexico, after getting my fill of relaxation and culture, I sign up for a surfing lesson to challenge myself. “This is the Mexican vacation you wanted,” I say to myself, preparing to stand up on my board, planting my weight on my back foot, sticking my hands out for balance, and staying upright for all of five seconds longer than my precious attempts—before splashing down face-first into the surf.

Now I watch DIDN’T KNOW EXISTED. this new part of me carry on outside my body, experiencing the world. Her first wobbly steps on Christmas Eve. Her fascination with sticks and stick-like objects. Her unprompted, goofy four-toothed smile. Her love of the shoes we leave by the door, particularly the delicious bottom parts. Lucy is so excited about being alive that I can’t help but feel it too. Last month I decided we’d share in the excitement by taking a mother-daughter trip to Europe. We endured and occasionally relished long plane, train, and bus rides, afternoon tea, and miles of museums. One evening, we ducked into the Sacré-Cœur Catholic church just before closing time. It was lit with hundreds of candles and utterly silent, harboring just a few people scattered in voiceless prayer. We had only just made it to the back of the church when the baby in my sling emitted a loud, echoing burp. Thrilled with her handiwork, Lucy sang. She shouted “Hi!” She barked. I made a beeline for the door, but by the time we got there she was shouting “BABY!” and every bowed head was turned our way. Mortified as I was, the memory of her joyful noise will keep me laughing for years to come.

I thought it was silly until my first few nights as a mother, when I was too scared to go to sleep out of fear I’d wake and Lucy would be gone. One year later, I still walk into her room every night before I go to bed, and rest my hand on the small of her back to feel the steady rise and fall of her breathing. And yet I understand that the most important gift I can give her aside from life and love is independence. Like my mother before me, and my grandmother before her, I have been tasked with preparing her to live without me. If my mother is lucky enough, I will outlive her, while the fierce love she gave to me will continue to live on through my daughter long after I’m gone. As I stand in Lucy’s bedroom next to her crib, I can see my mom placing her hand on me, kissing me goodnight. And I realize that I’ll probably still call my daughter when she’s 30 to make sure her plane has landed safely.
