..time to say “good-bye” to Summer 2018. I hope it’s been full of family memories for you and that you took some time to get away and unwind—even if it was just to enjoy some lazy hours cooking out with family and friends. It won’t be long before we’ll be bundling up to cheer our favorite team and planning all those wonderful holiday get togethers. Can’t wait! In the meantime, we’ve filled this month’s magazine with ideas for cool recreation, yummy light-weight recipes, summer wellness, beauty, fashion, and health tips and even some ideas for getting the family back to school. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed writing it. I’ll leave you with this challenge put forth in 1 Corinthians 13, “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” Above all this month, take the time to love. GRAND PRAIRIE
In just a couple of weeks, the doors will open at schools across Mansfield for the start of another academic year. Our city is fortunate to have the Mansfield Independent School District as a partner and as the educational provider for our children. More than 35,400 students are projected for the 2018-2019 school year. As Mansfield has grown, so has MISD, and vice versa. In the last 10 years, nine new campuses were added to MISD, in addition to five school rebuilds. While the MISD includes portions of Arlington, Grand Prairie and unincorporated Tarrant County, the entire 38 square miles of the City of Mansfield is in the district. Those schools are considered among the best in the state and the most innovative. MISD was one of the first to open a campus dedicated entirely to career and vocational education. Ben Barber Career Tech Academy (also known as Frontier High School) has seen its students excel in everything from manufacturing jobs at Klein Tools to medical professions in hospitals across the state. They accomplish a lot both inside and outside the classroom. Dr. Jim Vaszauskas has been named one of the Top 5 superintendents in Texas. Student athletes and musicians have won at numerous UIL competitions. Last year six MISD students were named as National Merit Finalists. Welcome back to school MISD students, staff, teachers and administrators. Mansfield is proud of all you accomplish. As our city and our school district continue to grow, we will achieve great things working together.
All around Grand Prairie, you may notice art has been added to traffic signal boxes at key intersections. A group of community and neighborhood leaders selected 20 artists from hundreds of entries in a competition last year. The artists range in age from a 13-year-old GPISD student to an 81-year-old Grand Prairie photographer, and hale from all over Texas. Thirteen of the boxes are painted and seven are wrapped with artworks printed on vinyl. From flowers to butterflies, water to wilderness, the project has enlivened streets and neighborhoods, and disguised big, grey boxes sitting on corners. I believe public art is a hallmark of a world-class city. It reflects our society and adds uniqueness to communities. Places with strong public art break the mold, and give cities a stronger sense of value, place and identity. This project embraces these benefits and has been so popular, we are hoping to expand in 2019. Come take a drive and see!
MAYOR JEFF WILLIAMS
ARLINGTON
July was a busy month in The American Dream City with the debut of the newest ultimate super-villain thrill ride at Six Flags Over Texas, Harley Quinn Spinsanity, University of Texas at Arlington formula racing students jetting off to the UK to participate in a formula event at Silverstone Circuit, and the City of Arlington being named one of the best-run cities in America by WalletHub. We came in 25th out of the 150 most populated cities in the country and nabbed the #1 slot for the state of Texas. August is already off to a busy start with major reconstruction on Deaver Park set to begin at the end of August and to last roughly six months. We’re excited to offer even more to Arlington families! Now, here’s a little something that could be fun for your family. Arlington Animal Services is looking for adorable and lively photos to include in their Adoptions & Rescues Calendar and they’re holding a photo contest, with the theme “A Decade of Adoptions and Rescues”, open to any pet owner of any animal rescued or adopted from the Arlington Animal Services Center since January 2009. Past entrees have been, not just dogs and cats, but chickens, pigs, snakes, parrots, ferrets, and hamsters. There’s a $1 charge for each entry and $1 charge to vote on the winner with all proceeds benefitting Arlington Animal Services. Start snapping those cute photos, enter at Arlington-tx.gov, and help us support this worthy cause. The contest ends Friday, August 31, 2018.

TALK OF THE TOWN
A big thank you to Mansfield Custom Homes for leading the project!
Homes for our Troops SSgt. Omar Milan wanted to serve his country in the military, since he was a boy. He couldn’t have been prouder to wear the Marine uniform and work his way up to staff sergeant with the 6th Marine in the Nawa District of Afghanistan. But on January 9, 2012 everything changed. Out on routine duty, Omar stepped on an improvised explosive device which led to the loss of one leg below the knee, loss of the use of one hand, and extensive tissue damage on the lower half of his body, which landed him in a wheelchair. Forty surgeries and two years of physical therapy later Omar tried to resume a normal life, as a husband and father. But the home he’d purchased for his family fell far short of handicapped accessibility. His wheelchair wouldn’t fit through the doorways and he was unable to do the things he felt a husband and father should. It was then that the non-profit, Homes for our Troops, came to the rescue donating a fully-accessible house with enough room for his wheelchair, even room for him to pursue his passion for woodworking. The couple chose to build their home in Mansfield, where their two daughters will have access to excellent schools. Happily settled in their new home, Omar plans to pursue a mechanical engineers degree and his wife, Michelle, is on her way to completing nursing school. “I’m thankful for Homes for Our Troops for being able to create a better life, not just for myself but for my family,” he said.

So how did iKids become one of the top destinations for children’s oral healthcare? It started with the oldest of three brothers who was soon joined by the other two. Wanting to step away from the traditions of dentistry, iKids boasted no closed windows; no waiting rooms, but reception areas; no patients, but guests; no employees, but cast members; parents being allowed back into the treatment rooms (a very uncommon practice); ultimately creating a dental experience like no other. You want to be greeted by every single person you see? That’s the iKids way! Sound Disneyesque? It’s supposed to! Come in and see for yourself!

FRUIT OF THE VINE
Thirteen Guidelines for Success BY LISA JENKINS-MOORE
In May, my oldest son turned thirteen. In our household, we honor this birthday as a significant milestone—a crossing over from childhood into adulthood. We gathered the men in our family together as well as the leaders of our church for his celebration. I asked each of them to take some time to prepare a blessing for him as well as any words of wisdom for his coming of age. Everyone shared profound insight including the importance of a daily quiet time, journaling, living beyond the moment and more.
20
As school opens its doors again for a new year, may we remember the adolescents and the significant challenges that lie ahead. While not an exhaustive list of attributes, here are thirteen guidelines with Scriptural reference my father shared with my son. Perhaps they will be useful to help our loved ones navigate the often treacherous waters of adolescence and adulthood: 1. Revere and honor God. Proverbs 1:7; 8;13 2. Honor and Respect your father and mother. Ephesian 6:1-3 3. Accept your responsibility to be a good influence. I Timothy 6:20 4. Protect your future children by giving them a solid foundation to grow and mature. Deuteronomy 4:40 5. Choose friends that promote good behavior; ones you can look up to spiritually. 1 Corinthians 15:33; Proverbs 13:20 6. Choose the input/access to your mind carefully. Philippians 4:8 7. Be a man of your word; a man of truth. Proverbs 3:3-4 8. Be a man of humility. A real man gives God credit and praise for all talents and gifts and honors God with them. Matthew 20:26; 23:12 9. Be a futuristic thinker; wise men do not build on what they can gain in the moment but what will be of lifelong and eternal benefit. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 10. Be teachable; a successful man is ever learning and willing to receive instruction. Proverbs 3:7 11. Pick heroes and role models from men who honor God. Psalm 15:4 12. Develop an attitude of gratitude. I Thessalonians 5:18 13. Trust God for success and grace to overcome failure. Proverbs 3:5-6
My father was speaking to my son, thus using the male pronoun. However, these truths speak beyond gender and are essential to spiritual growth and maturity. My oldest son has been my most challenging child thus far, and though he would never admit it, his “crossing over” celebration made an impact on his life. Though his body and emotions may not have been ready to fully grasp the significance of the occasion, his spirit wholly embraced the magnitude. Great men of God gathered to celebrate him, encourage and instruct him, and pray a blessing over his future. His spirit received it and eventually the rest of him will catch up! Parenting is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life. I fail more often than I succeed. Yet I rest assured that God would not have entrusted me with such precious gifts and not given me the tools with which to steward them. In times of distress, I remember His promise, “All your children will be taught of the Lord, and great will be their peace” (Isaiah 54:13). One evening while distraught, praying over one of my children, I was reminded of this verse. The Lord spoke to my heart, “Will be taught by whom?” I responded, “The Lord.” He then whispered, “And you may not like the way I teach them.” Though that may sound ominous to some, it gave me great solace and continues to remind me that my children are His. I guide them, train them, love them, and do my best to protect and do what’s right for them, but ultimately, they belong to Him. I pray they are all able to learn gently, but if not my loving Heavenly Father knows just how to teach them. God loves the children in our lives more than we can imagine! He is trustworthy and His Word is full of the BEST guidelines for life. I am grateful to have extended family that knows Him, knows His Word, and pours into my children to help them grow in grace. God structures life in seasons. Some are more difficult than others. But He can always be trusted and His Word is always sure! Lisa is a freelance writer and speaker. ...Mansfield simply the best! A graduate of Texas A&M, Dr. Danny Wright completed dental school and pediatric residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his wife and three young children, trying new restaurants, and traveling. He is an avid snow skier and Aggie football fan. Dr. Deborah Sullivan grew up in Texas, wandered away to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to become a dentist, then got back as fast as she could to do her pediatric residency at Texas A&M School of Dentistry in Dallas. She loves her family, her church and her dogs...and teaching children about going to the dentist.

WELLNESS
FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH Healthy choices that can (actually) extend your life BY DAVID BUICE
While nobody has ever found the restorative waters of the legendary Fountain of Youth, in a metaphorical sense it exists today thanks to centuries of research and understanding in the form of simple, healthy choices we can make to maintain our health and increase our chances of living well into old age. Quit smoking. An obvious choice, but one worth emphasizing. If you quit smoking by age 30, your survival rate can rival that of those who’ve never smoked. And if you
60
quit by 50, you’ll reduce by half your chances of dying in the next 15 years. Finally, if you’re a smoker who’s already had a heart attack, you reduce by 30 percent your chances of having a second attack if you stop smoking. Eat breakfast. Eating a healthy breakfast reduces the chances of becoming obese, developing diabetes, and having a heart attack. Researchers at Harvard Medical School have found that something as simple as eating whole grain cereal daily can reduce your chance of dying by 19 percent.

WELLNESS
Eat more fish. Eating fish once or twice a week can reduce your chances of a heart attack by more than a third and may also reduce the risk of certain cancers and ease the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. The Omega-3 fats in fish also reduce blood triglycerides, reduce abnormal heart rhythms and the incidence of stroke, slow the buildup of artery-clogging plaques, and lower blood pressure. Exercise. Canadian researchers have found that even if you’re already 50 years old and never exercised, a brisk 30 minute walk three times a week can reduce your physiological age by about ten years. Lift weights. It was once thought you couldn’t stop the withering of muscles associated with age. Recent research
62
in Denmark, however, indicates that men and women who lift weights twice a week made gains in bone density and maintained the strength of people half their age. Meditation. Mindful meditation is a great way to cope with stress and anxiety and encourage longevity. Studies at the University of California, Davis indicate that those meditating daily have on average of 30 percent or more of the enzyme telomerase which is associated with long life. Work hard. Seems counterintuitive, but meaningful and productive mental and physical activity throughout life helps prevent an early death. Remember, not all hard work is unhealthy, especially if it keeps you motivated.

FAMILY TIES
HOW CARING FOR OUR PARENTS CHANGES AS WE ALL AGE BY DAVID BUICE
Members of the Baby Boomer generation are rapidly becoming senior citizens, reaching age 65 at the rate of 10,000 per day. At the same time, however, members of this rapidly aging group of people often find themselves with parents now in their 80s and 90s needing more and more help, either physical or financial—and perhaps both. Caring for an aging parent may start very low key and involve doing a few things they can no longer handle. But as time passes, both the tasks and the financial burden of care may increase. If an elderly parent doesn’t have the financial resources for adequate care, that burden falls on other members of the family, and it can be difficult to shoulder the costs. That, in turn, can lead to resentment, hostility, and the breakdown of family cooperation. The key to avoiding this discord is keeping the lines of communication open. Even if you’ve fallen out of touch over the years, siblings should
64
meet regularly by phone or in person to determine who can help pay for care and who can do physical work when needed. A lot of anguish can be avoided if family members meet regularly and follow up with texts and emails, keeping everyone in the loop.
BEYOND REGULAR COMMUNICATION BETWEEN FAMILY MEMBERS, HERE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR CARING FOR YOUR OLDER PARENTS. • As much as possible, include them in the decision making. The more involved they are, the better. Try to understand what’s most important to them and reassure them you’re there for them.
• Be open with your parents about your concerns and offer your help in decision making rather than taking control. • Decide together what things they can no longer do. For example, if failing eyesight makes paying bills difficult, offer to assume that task. • Be the grown up, even if at times you have to leave the room to vent your frustration. Your roles are now reversed, so try now to be the parent your parent wishes they had. • Finally, let nature take its course and accept that you can’t stop the aging process and the challenges that often go with it. But with kindness and compassion you can reduce their fears and ease your frustrations as you make this final journey together.

HELPING WITH
HOUSING
We all know the expression “Home is where the heart is.” As you transition into a caregiver for elderly parents who either no longer desire or are unable to live alone, you want your loved one to be in a safe environment where they can be content. The good news is that these days there are more and more options to choose from, even though making the right choice for your loved one can be challenging. To assist, we’ve taken a quick look at four of the more common options.
ACTIVE ADULT COMMUNITIES
These are places catering to adults age 55 and older and are often a mix of housing types—single-family homes, townhouses, apartments, or
66
mobile homes. There is a focus on an active lifestyle, and they are most appropriate for older adults who are still reasonably healthy, independent, and interested in the social benefits of living among their peers.
offer personal care services to those in need including bathing, dressing, and taking medicine. Some of these facilities also have special units for those with early- to middle-stage dementia.
INDEPENDENT LIVING COMMUNITIES
NURSING HOMES
In an independent living community, older adults can rent or buy their housing units. Meals are often provided, and housekeeping, laundry, and transportation may be available as well. Most residents can take care of themselves reasonably well and do not need help bathing, getting dressed, or taking medicine.
ASSISTED LIVING
Assisted living is similar to independent living, but they also
This option is for those needing 24-hour medical and personal care. Some older adults stay temporarily, recovering from a fall or surgery, while others must stay long term. Medicare or Medicaid often helps cover costs. The nursing home decision is one of the most difficult to make, and to find a certified facility in your area you can go to the Medicare website.

Skincare’s Newest Secret
Massage your way to younger, healthier skin BY AUDREY ASHE
Creams, masks, lasers, and fillers—these days we have it all when it comes to facial treatments for younger looking skin. While facial massage might not yet be super common in western countries, it’s gaining momentum as a natural path to vibrant, firmer-looking skin—and it feels pretty good too. Just like the muscles in your body, the muscles that support your face need to be relaxed, stimulated, and toned to keep your skin firm and lifted. And much like maintaining a workout routine, regular massage produces results. Stimulating the muscles in your face encourages blood flow to your skin, leaving it looking fresh and invigorated, and can stimulate collagen production which may help improve skin texture and fine lines. It can even address those pesky and uncomfortable seasonal allergies by relieving sinus pressure. Not only will massage help your face look refreshed, but it will feel it as well! We carry a tremendous amount of tension in our facial muscles, which only enhances the appearance of wrinkles. Just like a good stretch after a long day, your face will thank you for some exercise and TLC. Various types of facial massage target different problems. Lymphatic massage helps alleviate fluid retention in the face and reduces puffiness. Ayurvedic massage, using aromatic oils to soothe and de-stress, helps tone muscles, eliminate waste by improving lymphatic drainage from tissues, and may even improve energy levels. Shiatsu facial massage therapy uses fingertip pressure techniques to slow down the appearance of aging and improve skin tone. Geisha were famous for their beautiful facial skin and the Shiatsu technique has been credited as their secret for wrinkle-free skin, even in advanced age. Buccal facial massage lifts facial muscles and reduces jaw tension to minimize wrinkles around the mouth. It goes a step further than other techniques by applying motion from both the outside and the inside, namely, through the mouth. In fact, the newest addition to Great Britain’s royal family, Meghan Markle, is known to use these treatments for radiant and plump skin! It’s worth looking into trying facial massage—check your local salons, massage places, and day spas and see what they offer.

If you’ve been considering a tuck here, a lift there, or maybe something as involved as a full mommy makeover, choosing the right plastic surgeon is paramount. But how? The most popular time for many procedures is in the fall and winter, so it’s time to start doing some research. Here are some tips to find a doctor who is experienced, vetted, qualified, and right for you. 1. Take your time and do your homework. Ask around. Peruse online reviews. Find some docs you like, then look at their bios, review their qualifications and training, and check out their before and after pictures. Make sure the doc you’re considering has a plethora of experience doing the procedure you’re considering. 2. Check for certifications. Make sure any doctor you are considering is board certified in plastic surgery. The reason this is so important is that certified plastic surgeons have verified experience and training in plastic
70
surgery and in the procedure they perform. Always check the websites for the American Board of Plastic Surgeons or the American Society of Plastic Surgeons to see if the doc in question is listed. 3. Schedule a consult and ask a lot of questions. “This is your time to get to know your doctor and understand your surgery,” said Cat Begovic, MD, FACS, a double board certified plastic surgeon who practices in Beverly Hills, California. “I always encourage patients to bring a list of questions to the consultation.” She also said bringing in photos of what you like and don’t like is very helpful during the consultation process.
QUESTIONS TO ASK THE DOC: How did you train in the procedure I am considering? How many times and for how long have you performed this type of procedure?
What does your process look like before and after this procedure?
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF: Do I like spending time and asking questions with this surgeon? Do I trust this surgeon to recommend what’s safe and right for me? Do I feel comfortable disclosing my full medical history and habits to this surgeon? After your consultation, “you should feel that your doctor understands what you are hoping to achieve,” Dr. Begovic said. Remember, this “is a relationship, so it is important to feel comfortable with the person who is operating on you.”
SHOP FRESH!
The easiest way to cut back on the amount of processed foods you consume is to shop the perimeter of the grocery store, where the freshest foods are located. Select foods with the shortest ingredient lists. If a product contains an ingredient you can’t pronounce or don’t recognize—don’t eat it.
WHAT IS PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE? Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a condition characterized by the narrowing of a person’s arteries – the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
KENNELS Since 1972
2016- 2018
SOME POSSIBLE SYMPTOMS OF PAD • Numbness, tingling or pain in the legs • Burning or aching in the feet or toes while resting • A sore on the leg or foot that won’t heal • One or both legs or feet feeling cold or changing color • Difficulty in finding a pulse in the leg or foot • Loss of hair on the legs • Impotence
Because people with PAD have an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, The American Heart Association encourages people at risk to be screened to ensure early diagnosis and treatment.

Summer vacation is the perfect time for new floors A new floor is considered a big-ticket home improvement, according to Consumer Reports. It can also be a big ordeal, one best attempted while no one is home. That makes summer vacation the ideal time to upgrade your flooring. Relax and enjoy your retreat while your home gets a refresher. You will be one step ahead for the holidays, ready to greet guests with fresh floors. Whether you decide to focus on the kitchen, bathroom, living areas, or bedrooms, start by considering the location’s foot traffic, sun exposure, and general wear and tear. Factor in your budget but remember that this is an investment not an indulgence. Then, take a look at your choices. There are probably more than you realized! Hardwoods: Tried, true, and sophisticated, hardwood floors create a classic appeal. Choose from oak, cherry, hickory, and many others in colors ranging from blonde to dark.

CARPET’S COMEBACK
Tile: Ceramic or natural stone tile feels palatial and crisp. Options abound in color, patterns, sizes, and finishes. Tile lasts nearly forever and complements most designs.
It’s not shag, but carpeting is back in style with more durable and ecofriendly options, such as:
Bamboo: An ecofriendly alternative, bamboo grows like a weed, making its harvest less of a strain on the planet. It’s also easy to install and fire resistant.
• Waterproof and stain resistant
Linoleum: This durable material comes from linseed oil, cork, limestone, wood flour, and tree resins. It’s low-maintenance and affordable.
• Adhesive carpet tiles you can mix, match, move, and wash
Laminate: A hardwood lookalike, laminate fits most budgets and gives the look of luxury. It’s often more durable and easier to maintain. Cork: Hypoallergenic, mold-andmildew resistant, and a renewable resource, cork works for pet owners as well as tree huggers. It’s soft enough for young children and lovely enough to please the parents.
• Floral, geometric, and animal prints • Plant fibers and recycled materials • Layers of area rugs
• Textured or ribbed selections that also feel soft UNUSUAL OPTIONS Unique flooring makes a statement while serving a functional purpose. Trends include: • Rubber or foam • Pennies, yes pennies • Polished concrete • Vintage black-and-white tiles • Reclaimed wood

PREPARE NOW FOR LOW STRESS AND A BIGGER IMPACT LATER BY MINNIE PAYNE
With flowers in bloom, the summer sun pouring down, and the sound of whirring lawnmowers in the air, thoughts of preparing for the holidays may be remote. But the proverb about the early bird catching the worm does sometimes hold true. Holiday out-of-town guests will appreciate your thinking ahead, refreshing your guest room with new paint or bedding. The handyman can take care of that leaky faucet, squeaky plank on the patio, or broken light switch that needs repair. Quilters, needle workers, and crafters know how long it takes to produce a perfect gift, so now’s the time to get busy. And who doesn’t appreciate a handmade leather or wooden gift, or an original painting? The newly married couple will appreciate the ample supply of kitchen gadgets that you slowly buy on sale. For the family who gardens, it’s time to cultivate vegetables, so that there’s time to can and save those prized green beans and fruit preserves— which will make thoughtful, delicious gifts. If you’re more the flower type, a pretty dried flower placed on a scripted inspirational quote in a frame will have a lasting effect on a child or grandchild. Summer estate sales are perfect
82
places to find unique vintage gifts at very reasonable prices. Early seasonal storefront sales offer bargains for name brand items, with unhurried shopping. Paper gifts are lasting gifts. From the poet, a book of personal poems is meaningful. The same goes for a writer—a devotional book is special. Card makers find great therapy in making handmade personal cards. And what elderly parent or grandparent doesn’t appreciate a family photo album? If you have an aging or ill family member or friend, you have time to find a special gift to share together as an experience. If possible, maybe a holiday play or athletic event that you could enjoy with each other. It’s not too early to purchase tickets. You will treasure the memory. Airline tickets cost money—if you’re traveling or helping someone travel home for the holidays, start looking early to save money as well as be assured of getting the reservations you want. As any financial advisor will tell you, “plan.” Your family will thank you. Your check book will thank you. Your friends will thank you. But most of all, you will thank yourself for taking care of things early and avoid last-minute stress.

About three and half hours apart lie two getaway destinations that share a name— Woodstock—each with its own distinctive history and personality. Woodstock, Vermont, nestled among the Green Mountains, is a quintessential New England town with a scene reminiscent of simpler days.

A Woodstock 50th Anniversary Festival is in the works for the summer of 2019. Details will be emerging on websites and social media pages, such as Facebook.com/ BethelWoodstock50thAnniversary. Keep an eye out!
ARTSY AND ECLECTIC WOODSTOCK, NEW YORK Mention the name Woodstock and what may be the most famous rock concert ever held immediately comes to mind. In mid-August of 1969, more than 400,000 young people descended on The Woodstock Music and Arts Fair. Although the three-day event was officially held on a farm in Bethel, New York, some 50 miles from Woodstock, the namesake village remains synonymous with peace, love, and rock-and-roll. Today, New York’s Woodstock is sprinkled with wellheeled day trippers and vacation home owners. The town center is a pleasant place to spend the day, complete with benches, shade trees, and some of the best people watching you’ll find anywhere. During warm weather months, this “colony of the arts” provides outdoor music, a drum circle in the Village Green, and other events catering to locals and tourists alike. Driving into Woodstock, the relaxed yet lively vibe is seen and felt. Here, a modern homage to the 1960s counterculture revolution lives on. If you stay long enough, you may spy a Volkswagen bus decorated with a peace symbol. Throughout town you will find
86
colorful wooden painted signs and an eclectic array of shops brimming with everything from tie-dyed tees, handmade jewelry, candles, and incense, to fashionable casual apparel. There’s a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery that serves as a retreat and study center, and Bearsville Theater, a popular venue with no bad seat in the house, which hosts musicians and other artists. Theatre, music, and events also abound at the Woodstock Playhouse. The picturesque, walkable town includes an assortment of art galleries and cafés. If you’re interested in wellprepared New American cuisine, killer cocktails, and good fun, make a dinner reservation at The Red Onion Restaurant & Bar, located in an historic pre-1850 farmhouse just three miles east of town. Woodstock, New York offers unique accommodations, such as The Enchanted Manor, an eco-friendly, spa-style B&B that focuses on health and wellness. For a luxe lodging experience in the Catskills, the historic, awardwinning Mohonk Mountain House luxury spa and resort is roughly 35 minutes away. The Emerson Resort & Spa in Mt. Tremper is another nearby upscale lodging option. It lays claim to having the largest kaleidoscope in the country.

ADVENTURE QUAINT AND CHARMING WOODSTOCK, VERMONT A true embodiment of a peaceful New England village, Woodstock, Vermont has been named the most beautiful town in the United States by Condé Nast Traveler. Complemented by centuries of history and featuring a covered bridge close to downtown, strolling the streets is like stepping back to a bygone era. A handwritten chalkboard in the middle of town, labeled the Town Crier, indicates upcoming events and festivities. Numerous small shops, boutiques, and restaurants fill the downtown area. Many visitors also enjoy meandering along the side streets and looking at all the old, immaculately kept houses, especially when they are decorated for the autumn season. Take a scenic walk from the town center to Billings Farm & Museum. Regarded as one of the finest outdoor history museums in the country, it combines a fully-operating Jersey dairy farm with educational exhibits and interactive programs and events. If you want to get up close to eagles, hawks, owls, and other raptors, visit the VINS Nature Center, just 15 minutes from Woodstock. This well-maintained sanctuary rescues, treats, and rehabilitates injured birds, but the raptors that live there permanently are the main attraction. Since their past injuries make it impossible for them to survive in the wild, they remain at VINS where visitors get to meet them. Or perhaps you might fancy a short hike up Mount Tom that offers a stunning view of Woodstock from the summit? The trail begins on Mountain Avenue behind the covered bridge, and the hike takes you just 30 minutes from town. Local artisans are plentiful in and around Woodstock, Vermont. For instance, Farmhouse Pottery has been designing and crafting pottery, housewares, and accessories for more than a decade. Bookworms will find a well-curated selection at the Yankee Bookshop. And be sure to stop by Woodstock Farmers’ Market, a haven for foodies stocked with fresh produce, staples, prepared foods, and Vermont-made cheeses, chocolates, jams, breads, and more. B&Bs and privately-owned hotels are plentiful in and around both towns. In Vermont, The Woodstock Inn & Resort offers a classic New England resort experience that evokes a timeless elegance. Guestrooms are decorated with Vermont original artwork and include cozy handdyed blankets. The breakfasts are hearty, and the spa is divine. If you’re a golfer, check out their unlimited golf package. Other lodging options include the newer, familyfriendly 506 On The River. The river view penthouse suite even comes with a private patio with rocking chairs.

NEW MONEY TEACHING YOUR KIDS ABOUT THE POWER OF BUDGETING AND SAVING BY ANNETTE BROOKS
Our children see us spending money on just about everything as they grow up—vacations, toys, household items, vehicles, lessons, sports gear and costumes, electronics, and the list goes on. So what are we teaching our offspring about money besides how to spend it? Luckily, there are easy ways by which you can show your kids how to save as well as spend money responsibly, and to help them appreciate its value. Children as young as age three can grasp concepts like saving and spending. Get old school when they are little. Use a piggy bank and real money, then give them opportunities to save up for something they relish. The lesson learned is that you may have to wait to buy something you want. Compare this to the possible lessons we’re teaching kids when we always use our “plastic money card” or cater to their every desire. Likewise, adolescents can grasp the concept of compound interest—one of the most useful concepts in finance and the basis of everything from a personal savings plan to the long-term growth of the stock market. Use online tools, such as the compound interest calculator found at MoneyChimp.com, to show them how compounding works.

It’s also wise to help your college student prepare to maneuver through the financial world. Explain 401Ks, company matching, corporate profit sharing, and the value of a good benefits package. While these aren’t the only decision-making elements that go into job hunting, this information arms your children with the knowledge they need to make an informed decision. You will also do your kids a favor by helping them create a budget. Add up their bills, debts, and expenses, then figure out exactly how much money they need to make to stay afloat. Also suggest ways to slash expenses so they can save more for retirement or that first home. Teach them how to cook at home and brown bag it to work. Suggest “free” outdoor activities instead of things that cost money. Reduce content or eliminate cable TV and stop paying for any barely used streaming services. It all adds up, and if you show them how with a savings and compounded interest scenario, your words will suddenly have real meaning. Teaching your children how to be “money wise” helps them save for retirement and more. And you can benefit, too, because it may mean fewer trips to the “parental money well” when they’re older.

The ham and cheese combination can also be turkey and cheese, or whatever you would like to use up from your refrigerator.
