AISD Back to School Kickoff

The AISD Back to School Kickoff will help thousands of Arlington ISD students and their families get the supplies and resources they need to be ready for the 2017-2018 academic year. At the AISD Back to School Kickoff, which will be held on the west outdoor plaza and indoor platform of AT&T Stadium from 8 a.m. to noon on Aug. 12, pre-registered students will receive a backpack filled with school supplies appropriate to their grade level, as well as the opportunity to visit a variety of resource booths. Women’s Health Services now in two Arlington locations: Women caring for women Dr. Joan Bergstrom was the first female OB-GYN doctor in Arlington. She grew up in Nebraska attending college and medical school at the University of Nebraska. She did her OB-GYN residency at the Kansas University Medical Center.

A strong advocate of the public school system, she ran for and was elected to the AISD Board of Trustees and served from 1993-1996. All of her three daughters attended the public schools in Arlington. In 1996, she collaborated with her parents to build The Sanford House Inn and Spa. This business has expanded to feature the Award-Winning Restaurant506 and the business is now managed by two of her daughters. Dr. Bergstrom served on the Arlington NRSA committee to identify and award grants for programs to improve infrastructure and developments in and around downtown Arlington. In 2011, she obtained an MBA from Texas Tech. In 2012, she was elected as the Chief of Staff of Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital, the first woman physician to serve in that position in the history of the hospital. Dr. Bergstrom is honored to have been the recipient of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce Women’s Alliance Hero’s Award in 2012, the Great Women of Texas Award (Fort Worth Business Press) in 2013, the Safe Haven Legacy of Women Award in 2014, and the Top OB-GYN award from Arlington Today from 2014-2017. Women’s Health Services opened its second location in south Arlington last year and will be adding a 7th physician, Dr. Jessica Brown, in August of 2017. This year’s Readers’ Choice awards garnered unprecedented attention

iddle me this: What do Adrian Beltre, Adhafera and Adele have in common? I’ll give you a hint: It’s the same shared thread that connects Shakira, Nashira and the recently retired Mark Teixeira. Are you getting warmer yet? Here’s one more lifeline: Roger Maris, Polaris and Matthew Broderick (the guy who played Ferris) each fits into a certain category, as does everyone on the aforementioned roster of names. OK, time’s up: They’re all stars. Get it? This is our All Star edition, and I’m teasing it by enumerating entities that are or were all stars in their respective fields. If you knew the correct answer before you got to line seven, I’ll purchase a hat just to tip it to you. And then I’ll give it to you to wear on your own egg head, because only really smart people would have recognized that Adhafera, Nashira and Polaris are visible predominantly via the Hubble Telescope or at the University of Texas at Arlington Planetarium. Yale Youngblood Editor I’m not a member of the Really Smart People Club; I just googled “names of stars” and found three that might fit the narrative. I might have to buy a second hat to tip to the person who came up with the idea of search engines. I probably should use one to look up who that is, but there are more pressing matters at hand, notably addressing this All Star thing that had much of the Arlington area all abuzz earlier this year. I’m not exaggerating. Literally thousands of you who turn to Arlington Today on a monthly basis to quench your thirst for area news and views cast e-ballots at arlingtoday.com this past spring to help decide who and what would win All Star plaques in 2017. There were more than 100 categories from which to choose, so that meant you invested some time into the endeavor. The fact that literally thousands of you invested your precious time and effort suggests to us that you’re invested in what we’re doing here at the magazine. Oh, boy. I’ve got to get yet another hat to tip. Until I do that, let me do this: Please accept my gratitude and the thanks of all of us at the publication who a little over four years ago rolled the dice on the notion that the Arlington area is a special place with a noteworthy story to tell. This month that story focuses on doctors. And lawyers. And sub sandwiches. And construction people. And bankers. And churches. The Salvation Army’s MOST Amazing Race will help raise money for the organization’s charitable projects WHETHER YOU ARE IN IT TO WIN or just looking for a fun experience, registration is now open for the Salvation Army’s annual The MOST Amazing Race in Arlington. Money raised by The MOST Amazing Race, set for Sept. 9, funds Salvation Army programs in the Arlington and Mansfield areas. These include providing meals and emergency shelter, after-school care, summer camp and the Angel Tree program. The competition is similar to the popular television show, “The Amazing Race.” Two-member teams race around Arlington, following clues to reach checkpoints and complete challenges such as running, climbing, performing, eating, and problem solving.

Competitors Kevin Blair and Rod Nicholas, otherwise known as the Turbos, are returning for a third year. “After looking up the event’s website, we knew this would be a blast and immediately signed up! Both of us had no idea this event existed and we were proud to see The Salvation Army raising money and awareness that would benefit our hometown, Arlington,” the Turbos said in an email to MyArlingtonTX.com. This year’s race features a new event – the Emergency Responders Challenge. “This will give DFW police, fire, EMS, and ER personnel an opportunity to compete in a challenge just for them,” says Race Chairman David Sanders. “We encourage

the Arlington Emergency Responders community to come out and have fun for a great cause.” The Salvation Army is able to serve more than 10,000 people a year in the community thanks in part to fundraising events such as the race. “We encourage others to be a part of raising money for our city’s needs fulfilled by The Salvation Army in Arlington,” the Turbos said. “This may be the most fun way to show support for a charitable cause. Arlington was the highest ranked city in North Texas and the second highest ranked in Texas. WalletHub’s analysts compared the cities across six key categories: financial stability, education, health, safety, economy, and infrastructure and pollution. Those factors include the city’s credit ratings, long-term debt per capita, graduation rates, crime rates, quality of roads and job growth rate. “We think we have something pretty special here in Arlington. Now, groups like WalletHub and Money Magazine, which ranked Arlington the ‘Best Big City’ in the South, are taking notice too,” says Arlington Marketing and Communications Manager Jay Warren. “This outside validation sends a message to our residents that their city government is working hard on their behalf and spending their taxpayer dollars wisely.”

City recognizes Asian-American contributions to the Arlington community GRACE MCDERMOTT, the US Pan Asian Chamber Southwest president, recently represented the DFW Asian Citizen Council to receive a proclamation from Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams honoring Asian Heritage Month. The Asian Citizen Council’s mission is to encourage Asian-Americans to become active in the civic process and in public service. For the past 17 years, the DFW chapter has encouraged North Texas cities to proclaim May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month. The proclamation affirms how Arlington values the traditions of Asian and of Asian-Amer-

icans in the community and salutes their civic and public participation. About Asian Heritage Month ... In May 1990, President George H. W. Bush designated May to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and ... ... to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. Ninety percent of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. (It was recorded that many Chinese workers died from planting explosives while laying the track).

MORE THAN 20 children in the Arlington community will receive new bicycles for free this summer thanks to the generosity of Republic Services employees. The company, which collects garbage and recycling in the City of Arlington and operates the city’s landfill, donated 21 colorful youth bicycles to the Arlington Police Department last month as part of a community service project and teambuilding effort. Republic Services landfill divisions launched the bicycle donation project earlier this year and ordered 50 bikes to assemble and split among the various cities that the company serves, including Lewisville and Arlington. David Hildreth, Republic Services division manager, says the goal of the project was for the employees to have fun while spreading positivity and kindness.

The 82,000-square-foot building, at the corner of Hospital Drive and Matlock Road, will house physician offices and space for additional hospital services. The new $11.8 million building will be four stories tall when finished this winter.

RAISE YOUR HAND if you saw Texas Ranger outfielder Rusty Greer make this catch to preserve a perfect game for pitcher Kenny Rogers. It happened on July 28, 1994, some four months after the Rangers made their debut at The Ballpark in Arlington.

THE REPUBLIC of Texas signed its first Indian peace treaty in what is now Arlington in 1843. The signing took place at Bird’s Fort with nine tribes, including representatives of the Cherokee, Delaware, Biloxi, Caddo, Keechie and Waco. AFTER OVERSEEING the city pay off its part of the debt on the building of The Ballpark in Arlington in 2001 – some 10 years ahead of schedule – Mayor Elzie Odom began engaging in talks with Jerry Jones and other city leaders for a new Cowboys Stadium to be built in Arlington. ARLINGTON STATE College, then in the Texas A&M system, was the first school in the system to integrate African-American students, in 1962. Gospel artist Kirk Franklin’s new recording studio is unlike any in the country MULTI-PLATINUM GOSPEL ARTIST Kirk Franklin recently transformed a vacant furniture warehouse in downtown Arlington into a $2 million, state-of-the-art recording studio unlike any in the country. Fo Yo Soul Entertainment is located in a two-story stone and glass building at 102 S. Oak St. The 9,000-square-foot structure, originally built in 1968, was extensively remodeled with specialized construction techniques designed to block outside noise and vibrations from downtown traffic and the nearby train tracks. That’s not all that the makes the building unique. It’s also the first recording studio in America known to feature prototype technology that can change how large the space sounds, making it seem as intimate as a jazz club or as spacious as a cathedral, with a few simple taps on a computer screen. “You can literally change the design of the building on a laptop,” Franklin, a long-time Arlington resident, recently told MyArlingtonTV. “There are speakers and there are microphones in the walls. A resourceful principal and some dedicated police officers turned a negative into a positive • By Kenneth Perkins

rather non-descript bridge on Sherry Street in east Arlington was built as a much-needed lifeline, giving students leaving Lynn Hale Elementary a shortcut into their neighborhood of single-family bungalows, townhomes and apartment dwellings. Things were perfectly fine ... until they weren’t. That’s when Hale Principal Claudia Morales Herrera began hearing an assortment of complaints from parents displeased with the amount of disgusting graffiti popping up underneath the bridge in full view of their impressionable young children as they trekked to and from school grounds. Graffiti might be a nice way of putting it, actually. There’s a wide range of perceptions concerning this age-old craft that often hovers somewhere around artistry, cultural value, mindless vandalism and simply outright crudeness. Parents weren’t all that divided with what their children noticed on a daily basis. Let’s say it wasn’t PG. So in order to find a solution, neighbors banned together to paint murals over the graffiti, getting help from not only local businesses like Home Depot and a real estate firm, but also the Arlington Police Department. One problem down ... but there was one more to go. Turns out a second, more insular situation had been simmering for some time near that bridge and out of sight of school staff. “We were getting these reports of kids being harassed near the bridge and them being quite afraid of walking home,” Herrera told me. This wasn’t just bullying from classmates. This was kids being shoved and pushed and punched and frightened by older kids and even older adults often seen lurking nearby, or even standing near or on the bridge, as if waiting. “Conflict was brought into out school” is how Herrera explained it. So she reached out to the partner she knew could help. APD. Officers assigned to the department’s East District were already a hefty presence in the school, showing up for neighborhood watch meetings, of course, but also events like the Daddy Daughter Dance and Multicultural Night. They even tutored students. East District Police Lieutenant Becki Brandenburg began assigning patrol officers such as Sergeants Robert Walsh and JaNae Powell

to the bridge. They’d arrive shortly before the final bell and around 3:30 p.m. were in place to walk with students as they left the school and crossed the bridge. Herrera was well aware of the potential trouble here. She connected the graffiti situation with the “Broken Windows” concept, which suggests that in places with a multitude of broken windows the assumption is that no one is watching or even attempting to deter bad behavior. So it continues. “You don’t want to have that perception,” Herrera says. This longtime principal understands how academic achievement isn’t always an absolute measure of a student’s intelligence. Student behavior plays a major role, and that behavior often changes when the ability to learn is impacted by outside forces, such as being afraid of what awaits you after math class. “You have to be able to address the emotional behaviors of these kids before you can even begin the learning process,” Herrera says. “It’s important. You don’t want to spend too much classroom time trying to deal with things that are occurring outside of your own walls. It just doesn’t work.” Police officers were more than happy to stroll along with the students as they left the school and crossed the bridge. Not only did the APD step in to help quiet distressing activity in the area during dismissal but they took ownership by naming this unique partnership “The Bridge Kids.” Something unexpected happened in the process, as well. Police officers appeared, well, human. “These were the same kids who referred to officers as ‘The Po-Po,’ people to be afraid of,” Herrera says. Now these “Bridge Kids” look forward to having patrol officers stroll with them, even running to them “giving them high fives,” says Herrera. “They ask about them when they are not here. What a change.”

MANSFIELD ISD EARNS SEVERAL ACCOLADES

he 2016-17 Mansfield ISD Board of Trustees has been selected as the 2017 Region 11 Outstanding School Board. The recent award is a rare sweep of the region’s executive-level educational awards program. Earlier this month, Superintendent Dr. Jim Vaszauskas was named Region 11 Superintendent of the Year. In addition, Raul Gonzalez, president of the MISD Board of Directors, recently earned the title of Master Trustee following completion of a year-long leadership program from the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB). To top off the good news, Mansfield ISD students exceeded state averages in every subject tested, according to the recently released 2017 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) scores. The school board award, sponsored by the Texas Association of School Administrators, was created in 1971 to recognize school boards that have demonstrated outstanding dedication and have rendered ethical service to the children of Texas.

School boards are nominated by their superintendent for the prestigious award. The application process involves creating a booklet of information and documentation that addresses topics such as supporting educational performance and improvements, putting students first and maintaining positive relationships. The regional winner is chosen by a panel of school superintendents. The Superintendent of the Year Award, sponsored by TASB, honors outstanding Texas administrators for achievement and excellence in public school administration. After earning his new distinction, Gonzalez said his plan is to help move the district, already one of a select group with the label “District of Innovation,” in an even more positive direction. In the STAAR report, MISD students in grades 3-8 scored higher than the state average in reading, math, writing, science and social studies. State averages were also surpassed in the STAAR End-ofCourse (EOC) exams, which assesses English I, English II, Algebra I, Biology and U.S. History classes.

s the summer clock ticks down, and parents and their children start thinking about the upcoming school year, staff members of the area’s public school districts and other local organizations are putting the finishing touches on programs designed to ease the seasonal transition. Here are some details you need to know about those projects ... Arlington ISD – The AISD Back to School Kickoff will be held from 8 a.m.-noon on Aug. 12 on the west outdoor plaza and indoor platform of AT&T Stadium. Pre-registered students will receive a backpack filled with school supplies appropriate to their grade level, as well as the opportunity to visit a variety of resource booths. Booths will include an immunization station, vision checks, eyeglass fittings, information on after-school care programs and more. Additionally, attendees can expect to see appearances by Dallas Cowboys mascot Rowdy and former Dallas Cowboys players. To be eligible to attend the AISD Back to School Kickoff, students should

qualify for the free or reduced-price meal program. Parents are required to pre-register their students. ven as it reigned as the 2016 readers’ choice for best emergency room in the area, Medical City Arlington recently completed construction on its emergency department, part of a $100 million facility expansion and renovation investment. The recent project includes several initiatives to increase efficiency and care within the ER. “Medical City Arlington is committed to being the healthcare leader in the Arlington community and surrounding area,” says Keith Zimmerman, the hosptial’s CEO. “This expansion provides for needed capacity and leading-edge technology as we move toward a Level II trauma designation.” The addition of an onsite computerized tomography (CT) scanner allows radiologists to conduct exams within the department and provide physicians with faster, quality imaging results. Additionally, the hospital has enhanced services by adding a separate suite for pediatric emergency care, which includes a

Moody takes regular mission trips to impoverished areas such as Ethiopia to provide dental care to the locals. He also developed the wooden nickel program, giving wooden nickels to reward good patients, who save them to earn fun prizes then donate the cash value of their earned nickels to help others in need around the world. “We realize the incredible blessings that we have in our lives and try to live by the passage from Luke that says ‘to whom much is given, much is required,’” Moody says. He said in an Arlington Today cover story in May that during one particularly threatening evening, he answered 11 calls seeking some form of roof or exterior remodeling due to storm damage. “In any given month this summer, we’ll be working on 75 to 150 jobs,” he says. “It’s been a crazy year.” While he has invested more on marketing efforts this year than in any previous – you’ve likely seen a billboard or television commercial featuring Clifford the dog – his primary means of connecting remains word of mouth. While RJ Construction jobs span just beyond the borders of Fort Worth and Dallas and include all the communities in between, it is Arlington that holds the special place in his heart. He went to school here and started his career here – and now he’s watching his business grow by the day. “I

A good friend, Duncan Wood, was going to England for an automotive event being staged in close proximity. He was able to thoroughly inspect and drive Rose – the name its owners had used to market its services. “I received an email from Duncan that read, ‘Drove the car. You’re an idiot if you don’t buy it. If you don’t, then I will!’ That totally sealed the deal for me,” Dave says. “An email and phone call handshake agreement was struck with the British owner, but our arrangement was kept under wraps since folks in the UK would not be happy with such a fine car leaving their country.” Following some degree of hassling with currency conversion, the next task was to arrange for its journey across the English Channel and beyond with the ultimate destination being the Port of Houston. “I decided to hire an agent to shepherd her through the process,” Dave explains. “If you’ve never shipped a car into the U.S., there are custom fees, port fees, inspection fees, and imagine this, unpacking fees. His experience is entirely understandable, given that the international legacy of his limo is all about providing brides and grooms with memories to last a lifetime. Before he acquired the rare vehicle on its 60th birthday in 2012, it was already long in its history of chauffeuring newlyweds in its home country of England. Dave learned of the car’s availability when he got word that its owner, who he had first contacted a couple of years earlier, was planning on getting out of the wedding business.

almost two weeks it took to get to the first U.S. port in Charleston, South Carolina,” Dave recalls. “Then to Miami and finally through the Galveston Breakwaters and into the Port of Houston.” Next was to stage a “Welcome Home” ceremony with a 60th birthday party for Rose. Dave proudly sums it up: “Good friends, cake, cards, roses and a stunning car. Who could ask for more?” The marvelous Triumph fits into the category of “Orphan Cars” – historic automobiles whose parent companies have disappeared from the scene. Along with names like Hudson, Studebaker, Kaiser, Frazer, Packard, Nash and Willys, to name a few, their rarity makes the cars very collectable. There were only 190 of these cars manufactured – Dave’s was number 17, built and registered in Coventry, England. The engine is a modest 4-cylinder version developing 68 horsepower with a 3-speed transmission producing a top speed advertised at 77.5

miles per hour. It sold new for just over $4,000 in 1952, which equates to about $36,000 in today’s dollars. Dave is past president and events coordinator for the Red River Triumph Club. The Renown is the sixth among the classic cars in his collection. “I was looking for something rarer than the others, specifically this limo,” he says. “My wife does the decorations and sets up the atmosphere for the weddings and proms; I become the chauffer. “One of the most memorable occasions was the one where the bride’s gown was so big that she couldn’t fit it into the front seat with her new husband. So, she rode in the back, and he rode in the front with me.” Whatever it takes, once anyone arranges this vehicle for such a special occasion, there’s no way any substitute would take its place.

Passengers in the back of this limousine aren’t the only ones who get to experience luxury. The driver is surrounded by an array of high-end features, as well.

UTA wheelchair basketball teams not only stake claims to titles, but they help change lives, as well • By Sam Thomas

ver the past few years, the city of Arlington has hosted two World Series, a Super Bowl, an NBA All-Star game, a college football national championship and countless other major sporting events. You might say that Arlington has become a “hub” of the sports world, with world-class facilities and three professional teams calling the city home. Few, however, are familiar with one prominent sports community that has been quietly thriving deep in the heart of the University of Texas at Arlington campus. Doug Garner is the Assistant Director for Adapted Sports and the head coach of UTA’s Movin’ Mavs wheelchair basketball team. In March of this year, the Movin’ Mavs won the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Intercollegiate Championship Tournament, the team’s eighth overall title and first in 11 years. The Movin’ Mavs team started with humble beginnings in 1976 under head coach Jim Hayes. The program was unable to grant scholarships until the 1989-90 school year. Garner took over the program after Hayes’s death in 2008 and has seen wheelchair sports grow both in the Arlington community and internationally. “It’s really an interesting time in the disability sports world,” Garner says. “The awareness of the Special Olympics and the 80

Paralympics is really booming. The NCAA is having more talks in its Equity and Inclusion division about how they can accommodate students with disabilities in sports. The social awareness of people with disabilities is really growing a lot.” Garner helped start the Lady Movin’ Mavs team in 2013, which won its first NWBA national championship in 2016 under head coach Jason Nelms. Abby Dunkin, a junior on last year’s championship team, was also a member of Team USA in the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. This summer, Garner and UTA hosted Dunkin’s U.S. teammates for a week-long camp as Team USA prepared for the America’s Cup tournament, which will be played Aug. 2-12 in Cali, Colombia. “I think it says a lot for the university to give them the opportunity to come here and train, and compete at that level,” Garner says. “The fact that UTA supports something like this says a lot about the university. It also puts the name of UTA out there around the world. UTA players go on to play international ball, or professional wheelchair basketball in Europe, and that’s how we get a lot of our international players. They find out about the program, they see how well our athletes do, and they want to come train at that level.” Garner estimates that more than 30 former Movin’ Mavs, men and women, have gone on to represent their national teams.

While many athletes discover UTA through international play, some like Dunkin do so through the military. The sport of wheelchair basketball itself began in Veterans Administration (VA) hospitals where World War II veterans were being treated for various degrees of paralysis. The first game occurred in 1946 in Birmingham, Calif., between a group of veterans and doctors. “As veterans came home from wars, the NWBA was started as a rehab program,” Garner says. “They come home with different disabilities, and as we helped meet the needs of those veterans, it carried over to the general population of people with spinal cord injuries, or birth defects, or other things that affect people being successful in their environment.” DUNKIN, WHO DEVELOPED A NERVE DISORDER called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome at the age of 13, visited Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio at 17 to watch their wheelchair basketball team. She was invited to play with the Fort Sam Houston team on the spot. It was the first time she played the sport, and in 2014 Dunkin committed to play with the Lady Movin’ Mavs and study at UTA. “Lately, more and more people are hearing about our program,” Garner says. “And they are understanding the value of our program for all people with disabilities. They see that we are able to help people with disabilities use sports as a vehicle to get an education, and to get jobs.” Those who have come through the program have experienced success after graduation, as well. One example of that is PER4MAX Wheelchairs, started by Movin’ Mav alum Willie Hernandez. The company builds new and innovative products for people with disabilities. Many UTA players use PER4MAX wheelchairs in competition, and the company partners with the NWBA to provide wheelchairs to its athletes. It is easy to see that the Movin’ Mavs provide a solid foundation of training and motivation for the players that pass through the program. For Garner, that is the driving force of the program that he runs. “To me, I think anything we can do to provide opportunities to people with disabilities to get a college degree, and to be independent, and to be financially successful, that’s what we need to do,” he says. And the trophies that come along with it? “Championships are great, and they are definitely a goal of the program,” he says. “But helping people with disabilities get degrees and go on and be successful in a society that presents a lot of roadblocks, I think that is the biggest part.”

Anthony and Lori Henegar’s North Arlington house is breathtaking (in case you haven’t noticed already)

hen Anthony and Lori Henegar first moved into their North Arlington dwelling six years ago, they knew they were going to be afforded quite the view – even when they weren’t standing at a window. volunteer and proud graduate of Texas A&M University. She and Anthony, a local dentist, share the modern mansion full-time with 16-year-old daughter Mason, who attends The Oakridge School, and part-time with 19-year-old daughter Drue, whenever she returns to the nest during breaks at the University of Texas. As for the architecture Lori noted, it encompasses many noteworthy features, including four bedrooms and six and one half baths spread over two stories, rock/stone and stucco construction, three fireplaces, a gourmet kitchen that is open to two main living areas and living areas galore. The home showcases an impressive media room, a fitness studio, two built-in refrigerators in the aforementioned kitchen, a Viking gas cooktop, quartz countertops, a climate controlled wine cellar, and a five-car garage. The master suite is sanctuary-like with expansive custom closets, dual vanities, an oversized walk-in-shower, a sitting area, and a fireplace. The outdoor living area features an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, cascading pool with spa, a lap pool, an outdoor steam shower, and a water pond. And the vista Lori referenced earlier? Well, the pictures accompanying this story are a several-thousand-word testament to her keen observation skills. Wherever you look, you’ll likely enjoy what you see. But that’s just the house proper. Lori says she and Anthony are also fortunate to be able to live in a unique, extremely friendly neighborhood. “The area around us is heavily treed, which is beautiful,” she says. “And it has a diverse offering of many different styles of architecture. You are not going to see all Austin stone or any two homes that look alike, which is nice.” The neighbors, she says, are “fantastic,” the kind of caring people who are very watchful over each other’s properties. “Several of our close friends live nearby,” she says, “and we can easily walk down the street to a party.” >>> arlingtontoday.com • August 2017 • ARLINGTON TODAY

Here are some of the indoor highlights of the Henegar home, where family and friends find ample space for both entertainment and relaxation.

The Henegars entertain quite a bit, and Lori says she is grateful for the home’s ability to accommodate visiting groups, small and large. “It has been so convenient to have a well-appointed gourmet kitchen open to the two other main living areas in the house,” she says. “Also, our circle drive is ideal for high-volume attendance at our home because it makes it easy for the valet to move traffic.” Following an evening of entertaining – or just after a long day (“There’s been a few of those lately!” Lori says) – she likes to retreat to her favorite room in the house: the master bedroom. “It’s nice to pour a glass of wine and crawl in bed and have 84

such a lovely view of the sunset,” she says. “I get made fun of in my house because I go to bed early, but that is when the sky is streaked with spectacular orange and pink hues. It gets even more beautiful as it gets darker outside.” While the Henegars were enamored with the house “as it was” when they purchased it, they’ve definitely given it personal family flavor over the past half decade. “We received the house ‘stripped,’ so yes, we did a massive amount of replacement and renovation that took up to a year to complete,” she says. “We had fun picking out all new Viking appliances for our kitchen and added the Viking vent-a-hood. We built a new

outdoor kitchen with a DSC grill and DSC stainless cabinets. We also raised the floor in our theater room and created a step down that we had covered in absolute black granite that created a border around our red theater chairs that looks really cool. Then we did some fun step lighting that really makes it feel like you are in a theater.” Visitors no doubt appreciate those touches – and there are plenty of visitors to “Henegar Manor.” Lori says she and Anthony welcome any charity organization to their home but have had the most opportunity hosting Boys and Girls Clubs of Arlington special events. “We had a fun casino party one year when my oldest daughter, Drue, was involved in Cinderella Ball,” she says. “I think we have had a couple of Arlington Today magazine events, as well.” Lori says she hopes and tries to be a gracious host and is thankful that her home is a place to help her in that endeavor. “I think what I truly love best is how well this solid, vast, magnificent home has housed and nurtured our family and friends that come to visit,” she says. “I think Contemporary can come across a little cold if not executed properly, but the rich, jewel tones in our glass installation and many colors in our home really play well against all the stainless steel and concrete. People feel welcome and comfortable in our home and know they can go into our wine room, take any bottle out, and jump on the couch if they want to.” This aerial view shows the expanse of the Henegar home. Arlington Charities has spent nearly four decades making lives better for fellow residents in need

rlington Charities is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization helping to stabilize families, individuals and the homeless by assisting them in covering their most basic needs through food, clothing, hygiene items, holiday baskets, financial literacy, and information and referral. However, as the organization’s Development Director Penny Rowell discovered when she joined the team this past spring, despite the fact that Arlington Charities was founded nearly four decades ago, it is one of the city’s better-kept secrets. She would like to change that. “Having lived in Arlington for over 30 years I have experienced the growth of the city from the border at Pioneer Parkway to the border of Mansfield,” Rowell says. “I have been involved with various charities in the Arlington area and have seen firsthand the needs of the community. I have always known of Arlington Charities, but as I have said it has been the best-kept

secret, for until I joined the charity I did not know actually all the wonderful things they do for the people in such need in Arlington. Watching the clients interface with the staff and the volunteers as I walk around the building, I see how clients feel about all that Arlington Charities is doing for them and how grateful they are. Those smiles going out the door tell it all.” Arlington Charities’ mission is to lead and engage the community in the fight against hunger and poverty, to provide help, and to create hope. The agency was founded in 1978 when a small group of concerned citizens partnered with the Arlington Ministerial Association to create a safety net for the hungry. What started as a few volunteers providing food out of their car for the neediest in Arlington has grown into the largest food pantry in the area helping 50 families per day and having distributed over 935,000 pounds of food to residents in 2016. “Using a “client choice” model, we help stabilize families by providing for their basic need of food,” Rowell says. “The Waste Not Want Not Project recommendations show that the average community in America today can essentially double its capacity to address its hunger problem by switching from giving out standardized food boxes to letting clients pick out their own food. We believe our using this model allows us to assist more families, providing options, and allowing clients to maintain dignity.” In response to community and client needs, Arlington Charities continues to evolve. In fall of 2016 it began hosting monthly mobile pantries through its partnership with Tarrant Area Food Bank to provide community members access to more fresh produce, bakery and other items. “We also have recently begun piloting pantry services in offsite locations to support clients unable to visit our main center,” Rowell says. “Additionally, we will be adding Saturday hours once per month to expand access to services.” >>>

f it’s Saturday night, Charlie Weatherford will likely be found in his regular spot at the Western Kountry Klub, an old white metal dance hall on the outskirts of Mansfield. The Midlothian resident, 73, has been a fixture at the dance hall since 1955 when it opened its doors as a skating rink, drawing kids and adults from the surrounding cities to roll across the oak floor. When the club was converted to a dance hall in 1967, Weatherford didn’t miss a beat. “I couldn’t roller skate, but I used to come out here,” Weatherford says. “I don’t dance much now, but I still like to come.” Weatherford is one of the regulars who pull on their cowboy boots every Saturday night and scoot across the 2,000-squarefoot dance floor to live country music. Most weekends the club

draws 200 to 300 people, from teens eager for the line dances to couples who have been dancing together for half a century. Parents lead their youngsters through the two-step, while babies sleep in carriers on the long tables. The snack bar sells food and soft drinks, but no alcohol. People over age 21 are welcome to BYOB. With a $10 admission fee ($12 on a rare Saturday night) and a no-smoking policy, the club is popular with families, sometimes drawing three and even four generations in one night. “You come here and everybody just wants to have fun,” says Justin Dunn, 29, of Mansfield. “It’s something very special, very unique. Everybody here, you’re not treated like a stranger. You’re treated like family.” In the past 50 years, the club has drawn some famous customers, too. George Strait’s “Pure Country” turned the Western Kountry Klub into the Prairie Rose Dance Hall, filming several of the movie scenes inside and one in the parking lot where Strait winds up in the mud after a one-sided bar fight. People still come looking for the Prairie Rose and Strait, say Barbara and Jerry Cook, who run the club. “One family drove up from Brownsville on a family vacation,” Jerry Cook says. “They were just going to take pictures outside the building, but we happened to be here.” Boyd and Linda Williams of Midlothian were already Western Kountry Klub regulars when “Pure Country” set up for filming in 1991, and they appeared as extras in the movie. They’ve seen the club go through a lot of changes in the past three decades. “The place got air-conditioning,” Boyd Williams says. “We used to open the door for air. It was hotter than hell. Most of the time they had a band. Sometimes they didn’t show up, so we just went home.” Back in 1955, Roger Easterwood built the roller rink on the mesquite-covered prairie between Mansfield and Midlothian. “After World War II, they were giving away barracks from Carswell Air Force Base (now Naval Air Station Fort Worth) if you

would come get them,” Jerry Cook says. “They brought two and put them together.” Easterwood started having dances in the front of the building, while the skaters whizzed by in the back, Weatherford remembers. Ruel and Wanda “Mom” Hendrick bought the Western Kountry Klub in 1972, and their family still owns the building. Bill and Gerry Garner began helping Mom Hendrick run the dances after Ruel’s death, then took over as she got older. By 2009, the Garners were ready to retire. That’s when the Cooks stepped in. “We’d been playing music for awhile (as the arlingtontoday.com • August 2017 • ARLINGTON TODAY

Mack & Dyan Band), and several of the places we played at had either closed or were only playing music one night a week,” Barbara Cook recalls. “This is a unique place. We really didn’t want it to close.” The Cooks took over in January 2010 and brought in some new bands, attracting larger crowds that filled the club. But the club wasn’t out of danger. Grand Prairie had annexed the area in 2009 and wanted the club brought up to code, a formidable feat for the old barracks. The club actually closed for two weeks in 2012 before the Cooks were able to resolve issues with the city. Keeping the 8,000-square-foot building intact is still a battle, they say. Assistance from faithful volunteers and a crew of helpful regulars, among them a plumber, A/C repairman, construction foreman and pest control specialist, make it possible. Marsha and Miles Hutchinson of Arlington showed up the first weekend the Cooks took over the club, and they’ve been helping since.

“They had chicken wire with Coca-Cola carton cardboard covering the walls,” Marsha Hutchinson says. “We couldn’t afford to buy posters. Miles said, ‘What if I painted pictures of people that influenced you to cover up all the bad spots in the walls?’” His 4-foot-square, black-and-white paintings of Willie Nelson, Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline and other classic country artists line the walls. As high-dollar subdivisions creep closer to Western Kountry Klub, the Cooks fear that progress will do what rock ‘n’ roll, television and dance clubs couldn’t – close the Western Kountry Klub for good. “When it’s over, we can’t stay,” Jerry Cook says. “Until then, they can’t run us off.” The Western Kountry Klub is located at 5728 Lakeview Road, off U.S. 287. ODOMS CELEBRATE 70TH ANNIVERSARY

lzie and Ruby Odom have added another milestone to their life’s journey together. Among four generations of their family, they recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Their daughter Barbara Odom-Wesley perfectly describes her parents as role models demonstrating a combination of traditional family values and devotion to community service. As reported in the Arlington Citizen Journal, Odom-Wesley revealed the essence of their successful life together: “They attribute their long, happy marriage to always sharing everything and doing everything together. The most important attribute for their marriage is putting God first in all things.” Ruby and Elzie were childhood sweethearts and were married shortly after graduating from high school. Ruby was the daughter of Elzie’s pastor at Mount Hope Baptist Church in Shankleville, Texas. The couple described their courtship days as always taking place under the supervision of a parent or other family member. “The first time we were ever alone,” Elzie says, “was on our wedding night.” The couple became Arlington residents in 1979 with Elzie’s work in the Postal Service. He rose to the position of a postal inspector before his retirement. He was the first African-American to serve on the Arlington City Council and then was elected mayor of the city in 1997 – a position he would hold for six years before stepping down after leading the city through a period of maturity that culminated with Arlington growing to become the 50th largest in the country. Former mayor Richard Greene who served with Odom and preceded him in the office, marked the occasion, “I helped the Odom’s celebrate their 50th anniversary, and it’s hard to believe another 20 years has passed. “Elzie’s service was exemplary. His hard work for the people of our community was recognized across the city and led to his successful campaign to follow me as mayor. But, his devotion to the community didn’t end after his three terms in the office, as Elzie has remained an active supporter for every initiative that would improve the quality of life for our citizens.”

It has been around for a decade or so, with refinements over the years, but it is now the standard method of teaching and playing for age 10 and under, as well as for many teen and adult beginners. ROG balls are most often marked with dot, rather than being a full red, orange or green color. They have lower compression than yellow balls, which means a lower bounce. The Red and Orange ball programs also integrate shorter racquets. ROG balls bounce in the appropriate strike zones, which means players develop proper techniques, better ball control, longer rallies and more complete court coverage. Red Ball: Red ball emphasis is on fundamental skills, movement, coordination and confidence. Red balls are either foam (great for indoor play) or traditional felt. Both are slightly larger than yellow balls, and the non-foam balls have 25 percent of the compression of yellow balls. Orange Ball: The Orange balls are the same size as yellow balls but have 50 percent of the compression. Orange ball is played on a 60-foot x 21-foot (singles) court. Players have time to hit good, basic shots. Generally, Orange ball is for 10U. Green Ball: Green balls are also the same size as yellow balls, and play is on a full-sized court, with a full-sized racquet. Green ball players are still working on control and rallying. At 75 percent of the compression of yellow ball, green balls produce a strike zone that stays a little lower, allowing for more consistency. Generally, Green ball is for 10U, but also for beginning teens and adults. Players who begin with ROG training develop at their own pace, but overall, generally progress faster, which translates into more FUN, confidence and greater skill improvement. Youth and even teens and adults who begin their learning experience with ROG usually make fewer errors, build longer rallies and develop better techniques. No ROG courts around? No worries. Parmigiano Reggiano: An Italian gastronomic treasure

ITALY IS MANY THINGS to many people. To some, it is the wonderful art and architecture of the renaissance period. The sculptures and artworks of Botticelli, Raphael and, of course, Michelangelo have brought joy and wonder to millions of people around the world. Leonardo da Vinci was another great Italian master who had amazing talents in art, science, mathematics and so much more. Those who have been fortunate enough to visit Rome can attest to the wonders of the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The Vatican City with its beautiful Sistine Chapel with the famous ceiling painted by Michelangelo is truly awe-inspiring. Others enjoy the rolling hills of Tuscany with its olive trees and vineyards, or perhaps the romantic city of Venice comes to mind when we think of Italy. However, the humble parmesan cheese is a true Italian gastronomic treasure. Parmesan cheese is an integral part of Italian food. In Italian cuisine Parmesan cheese helps transform a few simple ingredients into something truly delicious. Think about an Italian-American favorite like Alfredo sauce – fresh cream with a bit of garlic and lots of Parmesan cheese, fettuccini pasta, and you have dinner on the table. It doesn’t get simpler or more delicious than that! Parmesan has been called the “King of Cheeses.” This hard and granular cheese has been made in and around the province of Parma for more than eight centuries. In 1954 an alliance of cheese makers formed a consortium, the Consorzio del Formaggio Parimigiano-Reggiano. The consortium followed strict production standards and marketed their product as Parmigiano Reggiano. The name paid homage to the area of Parma and Reggio where the cheese originated. The name Parmigiano Reggiano is indicated by pin dots imprinted on each wheel of cheese. In 2008, European courts passed a decree that only Parmigiano Reggiano may be called Parmesan. Only this Parmesan conforms to the Protected Designation of Origin or PDO standards. When the wheel of cheese has been aged 12 months, the consortium tests and grades each cheese. If the cheese passes the test, the consortiums’ logo is heat-branded onto the rind of the cheese. This ensures that consumers are able to tell which wheels of cheese are top-grade Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. European law can only be enforced in Europe, so that explains why we see Parmesan cheese made in Wisconsin or elsewhere! Parmesan Crisps Ingredients: 8 ounces of freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Method: Preheat the oven to 400°F. Place a silicon mat or parchment paper in a baking sheet. Pour a heaped tablespoon of Parmesan onto the silicon. Tap down gently to flatten. Place mounds of cheese at least 1/2 inch apart as it will spread as it bakes. Bake 3 to 5 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. Cool. The Parmesan crisps can be used as croutons in salad or just enjoyed as a snack with a glass of wine. Buon Appetito!

This month, Dr. William Nesbitt, president of Texas Health Heart & Vascular Hospital Arlington and a cardiac electrophysiologist specializing in electrical disorders of the heart, talks about what the hospital brings to the community. ARLINGTON TODAY: Tell us about the facility itself. Dr. William Nesbitt: The facility has 47 beds with four cardiac catheterization laboratories, two of which are electrophysiology labs. In addition, it also houses a device implantation operating room and four cardiovascular operating rooms. AT: Who are some of the other principals at the hospital? WN: The Chief Operating Officer is Sherri Emerson, who has been instrumental in the success of our facility. She brings her experiences leading hospitals in Austin and Ennis, Texas, and has been an invaluable member of our leadership team. Baron Hamman, MD, is a cardiovascular surgeon from Dallas and serves as the Chief Medical Officer, providing outstanding leadership since the beginning of our organization. In addition, Richard Wray, M.D., serves as Chairman of the Board of Managers and also is a practicing cardiologist. In the beginning, Kirk King, Southwest Zone Leader for Texas Health Resources, identified a need for advanced cardiology services and spearheaded the founding of Texas Health Heart & Vascular Hospital Arlington. Kirk remains an active Board member. Our hospital works hand in hand with the leadership at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital, including Blake Kretz, THAM President, and Jim Sammons, M.D., Texas Health Arlington Memorial’s Chief Medical Officer. We have an outstanding group of administrative and physician leaders working together to provide the highest quality cardiovascular care to our patients. AT: The hospital is physician-led. Can you explain how that process works and why it is important? WN: Being physician-led provides many unique advantages and is an important driver of our success. Our President, Chief Medical 106

Officer and Board Chairman positions are held by physicians who provide daily input to decisions throughout the hospital. Being a physician-led hospital allows for a more focused and directed positive impact on quality of care and the ability to create organizational decisions that lead to improved patient outcomes and overall patient experience. AT: What particular medical needs does the hospital address? WN: Our primary focus is care of patients with cardiac disorders. This includes cardiovascular bypass surgery and valve replacement surgery, acute care of patients having a heart attack, angioplasty and stent placement. Also caring for the patients with electrical disorders of the heart (i.e., pacemakers, defibrillators and ablations of arrhythmias). Our cardiologists specialize in other aspects of cardiovascular care, including the prevention of cardiac disease, as well. Thus, our facility is able to address multiple cardiac needs by incorporating several aspects of cardiac care into one patient visit. AT: The hospital seems to be on the cutting edge, technologically speaking. Can you elaborate on some of the ways this medical center is different from others that treat similar medical conditions? WN: Our unique technology includes the Hansen Sensei robot used to ablate arrhythmias in the heart. It allows the physician to manipulate a catheter in the heart sitting at a computer console via a joystick. We expect to stay on the cutting edge with robotic technology as it evolves. Also, James Norcross, M.D., one of our cardiovascular surgeons, has begun performing minimally invasive valve replacement surgeries that should lead to a better patient experience and outcomes. In addition, we are working on developing a program to provide minimally invasive aortic valve replacement via a catheter system. Texas Health Heart & Vascular Hospital Arlington also has the latest 3D-mapping systems and contact force sensing technology, making electrophysiology procedures safer and more effective. We are excited about our future in providing cutting-edge cardiovascular care. AT: In what other ways is the hospital special? Could this be the year Cowboys fans finally get to see the team return to the Super Bowl? • By John Rhadigan

hen two words can inspire emotion and passion it is special. “Play Ball,” “Happy Birthday” and “Love Ya” are examples of two-word phrases that make me smile and bring me joy. Now for an example that may not be so obvious or universal: Training Camp. To me, those two words are rich with subtext and implication. To me, training camp means, “The Dallas Cowboys are set to embark on another season, which, of course, means that they have a chance to capture the affection of football fans everywhere, and they have a chance to win another Super Bowl.” Those two words don’t have that same meaning every year. In fact, this is the first time since the ‘90s that those two words have made my brain construct a 37-word word run-on sentence. But that is where we are with this team. The Cowboys are good, they are ready – and they are built to live up to the usually lofty expectations of a fan base that is absolutely spoiled by the success of previous generations of America’s Team. That is not to say this will be easy. The NFL loves parity and does not like dynasties, so the league is very good at making it very difficult for teams to have back-to-back great seasons. Last year, the Cowboys played a last-place schedule; recall that Tony Romo was hurt in 2015, and the Cowboys limped to a 4-12 record. That ensured an easier schedule in 2016, and the Cowboys took advantage even though Tony got hurt again. But after Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott lead them to a 13-3 record last year, the Cowboys will play a first-place schedule this season, and that will make repeating as NFC East Champs a tall

order. However, it’s not as tough as some years in the past. The strength-of-schedule numbers indicate that the Cowboys have the 10th-toughest schedule in the league, and divisional rivals New York and Washington have what appear to be even tougher rows to hoe than Dallas. The team from Washington has the seventh-toughest schedule, the Giants are No. 8, and the Philadelphia Eagles are actually tied with the Cowboys at No. 10. Thanks to a well-meaning initiative, 400,000 acts of kindness are now underway in the city • By Richard Greene

rlington Mayor Jeff William’s kindness initiative has been launched. At the city council meeting before the summer break, he challenged all Arlington residents to commit and report an act of kindness. If they all follow his request, the result would be 400,000 deeds that would benefit someone. The goal represents the approximate population of the city, which is currently about 390,000. So, some will need to commit more than one act of kindness. If early results are any indication, that won’t be a problem. Already people are reporting multiple things they are doing for others. It seems unselfish behaviors result in the giver wanting to do more. With full coverage by the local media, including television newscasts, it’s no wonder that the word is spreading and people are joining the program in increasing numbers. The whole concept of the program goes directly to the notion that the betterment of the community can be enhanced if everyone gets involved in helping others. Local government is often the first place people turn to when they need something they believe to be in the public domain. But, the reality is that government can’t and, in many cases shouldn’t, be within the realm of the public body. The best example of this reality is to look at the great many non-profit and community service organizations that work for the benefit of the public. Without them the city would be but a fraction of itself as many needs would go unmet. When everyone joins in helping others, the result is a higher quality of life, making the community individually and collectively more successful in many ways. The city has made it really easy to report any kindness, big or small. A free mobile app that will work on any smart phone can be installed in seconds. The app is “Ask Arlington” and includes opportunities to report problems or needs the city should address, to request services and to access the city’s website. The link you would look for to join the kindness initiative is immediately accessible on the app’s home page. From right there in your hand you can see all the things people have done for others – or others have done for them – that they have reported. Pinpointed

by location and a short description, you can see how and where someone has helped someone else. Then you can add your act of kindness with a couple of clicks and share it with everyone else. Here’s the kind of things people are reporting: • A stranger stopped on South Fielder Road to help us unload a refrigerator. • After posting a life-threatening cancer suffered by pet, Arlington friends stepped up and provided 95 percent of the cost for a successful treatment. • Trash collectors picked up small branches that were in my yard. • Another neighbor gave Gatorade to three municipal workers on a truck. • Help from friends on the street with chainsaws came and removed a downed tree from my driveway so we could get home. • Marquise playing the saxophone in Sprouts parking lot made us smile and brightened our day. • My friend will mow the yards of our neighbors who have difficulty doing so themselves. He’s a great guy. • Coworkers surprised me with a delicious birthday cake. It’s so rewarding to be part of a team where members truly care about each other. • Rose just turned 94 and has never been on a fire truck but always wanted to. Today, Engine 13 arrived with flowers for Rose and made her day with a ride in a fire engine. These are just a few samples from those who have already joined the initiative. Once the 400,000 goal is reached, it, too, will be just the beginning. It’s all wrapped up as part of the new “Experience the Kindness of Our Dream City” campaign under the guidance of the recently formed Community Relations Commission. Following the success of other cities with similar kindness programs, Arlington now is making its own.

Richard Greene was Arlington’s mayor from 1987-1997, was appointed by President George W. Bush as Regional Administrator of the EPA, and currently teaches in the University of Texas at Arlington’s graduate program in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs.
