All-Star memories Sports were ‘my thing’ – even if, really, they weren’t

I

never made an All-Star team. In fact, I might be the only player in youth baseball history whose coach, the dad, didn’t select his shortstop, the son, for the prestigious postseason squad. Still, that wasn’t the most significant footnote to my inconsequential athletic career. There was a much better candidate a few years later ...    For the 8th grade I enrolled in a brand new school with the hopes of furthering my sports career, and, sure enough, I drew the start at point guard in the fledgling junior high’s basketball season opener. Euless was our opponent.    Our center won the opening tap, which came to me. As I proceeded to dribble to midcourt, a redheaded guard from Euless swooped in, stole the ball and raced unimpeded for a layup. On the ensuing possession, as I again approached midcourt, the red-head again stole my dribble and scurried to make his second layup in 10 seconds to give Euless a 4-0 lead. Before we could inbound the ball a second time, a time-out was called, and I was promptly replaced at point guard – making me THE FIRST player in Watauga Junior High School history for whom to be substituted. Yale Youngblood    Wait – it gets better. Fast forward five years. Editor    During the spring semester of my freshman year in college, the school held a charity marathon basketball extravaganza, featuring participants representing Baylor University clubs, frats, sororities, dorms, etc. Some fellows in my living quarters and I decided to sign up, drawing a 4 a.m. Thursday start for our first of two games. I suggested we wear pajamas. I was outvoted, 7-1.    Anyway, as this epic game commenced, our center controlled the tap, which came to me. I dribbled to get to midcourt – to begin executing the only play we had practiced – when this redheaded guy on the other team snatched the ball from my hands and took off toward his basket for an uncontested layup.    As had been the case several years prior, I would be challenged a second time.   And ...    The guy with the red hair would steal the ball from me again– although a bit later in the game. No matter, I personally assisted two of his buckets.    Eventually, we would lose, 98 to 30-something, and during the post-game handshake ritual, I told the redheaded guy that he played a good game and that what he did reminded me of a day back in junior high when I played against Euless.    “I went to Euless,” he said.    Yep. Same guy. And now you know why I became a journalist.

3 great ways to celebrate

SUMMER

1. Movie under the stars – Turn your backyard into an outdoor movie theater. All you need for an evening filled with your favorite Hollywood stars is an inflatable screen and projector, a cozy area for seating or sleeping bags and, of course, popcorn. 2. Neighborhood block party – Host a summertime gathering on your street, inviting the neighbors to bring chairs and potluck dishes to share. Arrange games for the kids and invite your local fire or police department. 3. Old-fashioned campout – Sleeping bags, a tent, lawn chairs and a backyard fire pit create the perfect setting for telling ghost stories and enjoying late-night marshmallow roasts. Also, Methodist Mansfield Medical Center received the Silver Receiving Quality Achievement Award, and the Mansfield Fire Department received the Bronze Receiving Quality Achievement Awards.

2. Even more heart healthy ... The Arlington Emergency Medical System recently saved its 100th victim of cardiac arrest, and last month Medical Center Arlington helped the survivors and emergency response teams celebrate. Some nine heart attack survivors, EMS professionals and Medical Center Arlington representatives attended the party. 3. This is a recording ... The University of Texas at Arlington Libraries will welcome a new digital audio studio this fall thanks to an award from Amigos Library Services, one of the nation’s largest library resource-sharing networks and a provider of information technology to libraries. The Digital Audio Experience Studio will provide performing arts technologies for recording and mixing music and audio to all students, regardless of major or classification.

The mystical allure of Village Creek Knowing the history makes this all-star-caliber haven even more of a hidden jewel • By Kenneth Perkins

Village Creek is one of those hidden jewels of Arlington. It is 135 acres of beauty, with biking and hiking trails, picnic tables, grills and even a hidden area large enough for a soccer field. So soothing are the creek’s waters hitting the bank, you can sit there for hours.

ARLINGTON TODAY • August 2015 • arlingtontoday.com

ifteen-year-old girls with Ariana Grande blaring through earphones are a tough sell on the historical significance of the ground on which they stand.    More of a travesty is not trying to make a cultural dent when given the opportunity.    So there we were in Village Creek in West Arlington on a warm evening shortly after a twomile run that began in gloriously shaded greenery and snaked through a part of the northwest Arlington subdivision Interlochen.    Since her affinity these days is action movies where things blow up and novels full of suspense and shrouded mystery, I began by telling her that if we could transport ourselves back in time more than 100 years – May, 1941, to be exact - we’d be right in the middle of a raging shootout.    IN THE 1930S, this valley held one of the largest concentrations of Native Americans in the region; Village Creek snagged its name because of the vast number of Native American villages residing along its banks.    Caddos were plentiful there, as were Cherokees and Tonkawas. For the longest time it had served as home for these tribes (and more) and better yet a stronghold against the encroachments of white settlers from the east. As friction between these two groups escalated, the Republic of Texas decided to end all that mess.    They tried raiding the villages – twice – and were beaten back each time, obviously underestimating the numbers tucked away. General Edward H. Tarrant would organize a militia captained by John Denton, Henry Stout and James Bourland, which was successful, for a while, at least, taking over the southern part of the village. Going deeper into Village Creek was another story, as resistance grew in strength. The more the militia pressed on the more desperate and larger in numbers the tribes became. Denton would die; Stout and Bourland were wounded.    When Tarrant returned with far more men to do the job once and for all, what they found was, well, nothing. The Native Americans had packed up and scattered. In September of 1843,

a treaty between the Village Creek tribes and the republic opened the region to settlement and removed the Indians to a reservation on the upper Bravos River.    Much like this story, Village Creek today is one of those hidden jewels of Arlington. And I mean hidden literally.    It is 135 acres of beauty, with biking and hiking trails, picnic tables, grills and even a hidden area large enough for a soccer field. So soothing are the creek’s waters hitting the bank, you can sit there for hours.    Yet most people driving along Dottie Lynn Parkway on the edge of east Fort Worth often zoom by this place as though it does not exist. Some don’t even notice the entry point. (Try slowing down around the 1200 block of Dottie Lynn and better yet pulling into the small parking lot to take a looksee.)    Even in the heat of summer, Village Creek, with its abundance of trees, shades the trail before leaving for the neighborhood.    ONE MORE THING about Village Creek: Archeological excavations unearthed evidence of several prehistoric villages. Artifacts from the area date back almost 9,000 years and represent a culture of food-gatherers and hunters.    Knowing this gives Village Creek an allure as you walk or bike through this area.    All you’re thinking is this: If only all that greenery could talk.    And your daughter would actually listen.

Arlington ISD, Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington partner for after-school center at Peach Elementary

T

he Arlington ISD has formed a unique partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington to include an after-school center in the new Peach Elementary, which will open on Baird Farm Road in August 2016.

“This first-of-its-kind partnership will provide AISD families an on-campus option for after-school care focused on science, technology, engineering, art and math that is research-based and outcome-driven,” AISD Superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos said. “The vision of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington closely aligns with the district’s mission and will provide our students with access to academic, healthy lifestyle and character programs as well as evening meals.” The additional 7,000 square feet included in the building as a result of this partnership will be funded by the Boys & Girls Clubs, with a lead matching grant from the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation, and will provide a mixeduse space that can serve 200 students per day. Since 1993, the Boys & Girls Clubs has operated a center in a portable

building at Roquemore Elementary that can only serve 110 students per day. There will be a dedicated space for teens in the new center, and students from Nichols who participate in the program will receive transportation. “This facility will allow us to provide increased opportunities for students in a 21st century space while saving donor funding by sharing construction costs,” said Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington President/CEO Steve Wurm. “Through our programming and work with other youth-service organizations, we

Candlelite Inn IF YOU WANT to spark a great debate, start talking about the best place in the area to get a steak. If you want to find that place ... well, our readers would point you in the direction of the Candlelite Inn, located at Favorite 1202 E. Division St. Steak   Alan Petsche, the eatery’s popular owner, said his restaurant knows the recipe, as it were, for making great steaks. “Basically, it takes three things,” he said. “You need a good cut of meat, seasoned well but not heavy handedly, and, most important, cooked to perfection by our veteran kitchen team.”   Petsche said he feels blessed to have such a loyal and enthusiastic customer base. “My definition of a memorable evening is good fellowship in a pleasant and friendly atmosphere featuring a large variety of good food at reasonable prices,” he said. “We want our customers smiling when they leave and smiling when they come back. Dr. Jackilyn Dang

DR. JACKILYN DANG, the dentist at Great Oak Dental (3851 S.W. Green Oaks Blvd., #101), said she is proud that her practice is highly thought of. Indeed, her patients thought so much of her that they helped her win this year’s “Favorite” distinction.    “I think my staff and I have managed to bond well with our patients because we take the time to ask them what they want and to listen to all of their concerns,” Dr. Dang said. “I also think it is because of trust. Trust is something that takes time to build. Since they see me every time they come in, we get to know one another and build more trust.” Favorite    Dr. Dang said the practice recently added a spefamily dentist cial new service for a special group of patients. “Service Smiles is one day of free dental service for our veterans on a first-come, first-serve basis,” Dr. Dang said. “After talking to many of our veterans, I found out that some of them do not have the means for adequate dental care. I feel that they have given so much for us, and I would like to help and give back.”    Dr. Dang said her entire staff eagerly volunteered to be a part of Service Smiles, set for Nov. 7. “I am very proud of them,” she said. “We are very blessed and will be honored to be able to serve the men and women who served us. We chose Nov. 7 due to it being the Saturday before Veterans Day, and November is the month of Thanksgiving.”    Other favorites: Dr. Nancy Bui - Dentalflossophy, Dr. Mark C. Dr. Earl Hampton VREHA is located at 1350 Caplin Drive.

VREHA HERE’S A TESTAMENT to the wisdom of the voters in this category: The team at Veterinary Referral & Emergency Hospital of Arlington (VREHA) recently diagnosed and treated a young dog with a serious disability, and now the pet is very likely to live a normal life. Oh ... It probably should be noted that the puppy was referred to the clinic from a veterinary hospital in Australia, where all treatment efforts there had failed. Favorite    Dr. Jantzen Strother, one of the veterinarian founders of VREHA, said the hospital was created to serve pet owners in the best manner possible – largely because the staff knows just what “mom” and “dad” are going through.    “When our staff gets a break from the long hours spent in the clinic, we go home and return as pet parents ourselves,” he said. “We personally know what it is like to face a medical challenge with our pets and how important it is to receive excellent customer service and a professional’s undivided attention.”   The new pet hospital’s state-of-the-industry equipment and technology have been chronicled several times in this magazine. Basically, anything that can be done for humans can be done for animals at VREHA. And, Dr. Strother said, there’s even more “new” in the works for him and the rest of the staff.    “We are currently in the process of expanding the services that we offer in Arlington to the North Dallas marketplace,” he said. “Plans for VREHA-Carrollton (a satellite clinic) are currently underway.” Other favorites: Cooper Street Animal Clinic, Farrell Animal Hospital and Gully Animal Hospital

Don Davis Auto Group DON DAVIS AUTO GROUP sells cars, for sure – a lot of cars – but that barely scratches the surface in describing what the company represents to the Arlington area. GM to spend $1.4 billion to enhance SUV production GENERAL MOTORS announced last month that it plans to invest $1.4 billion in the Arlington Assembly Plant, marking the largest investment in a single plant by the car/truck maker in the U.S. this year.    The move, announced during a press conference at South Street Patio, will focus on the production of high-quality, full-size sports utility vehicles (SUVs) to be sold at a competitive rate.    The automaker will reconfigure the Arlington plant with a new paint shop and body shop and will also upgrade the general assembly area. Construction on the new facilities will begin this summer and is expected to be completed over the course of three years. The construction is not expected to affect the production schedules for Chevrolet Tahoes

and Suburbans, GMC Yukons and Yukon XLs and Cadillac Escalades, which are mainstays of the local operation.    The move is in keeping with General Motors’ quest to supply cutting-edge SUVs – and to keep up with customer demand. Since 2011, the company has invested $2 billion in the Arlington Assembly Plant. The plant, which is more than 60 years old, produced its 10 millionth vehicle earlier this year.    The factory has some 3,800 hourly workers on three shifts making the Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and the Escalade, but it has not been able to produce enough SUVs to meet demand. Additional hiring is expected to be part of the expansion.

Brianna Hicks has returned from her ‘world tour’ a grateful person STILL ON CLOUD NINE from her journey around the world with her father this summer, recent Martin High School graduate Brianna Hicks has a renewed appreciation for learning.    “There are people in our country that take education for granted,” she said. “People in Third World countries would give everything just so their children could be educated and have the chance at a better life.”    While visiting Cambodia, Brianna and her father Grady had a unique opportunity to see students in a classroom setting. “We brought them some school supplies, and they were so grateful,” Brianna said. “They all screamed, in English, ‘thank you for the pens and books!’”    But what tugged at Brianna’s heartstrings the most during this portion of the journey was a seven-year-old girl who, despite an injured foot, followed Brianna, determined to sell her some postcards. Ten postcards for one dollar would help her family save up for her education. “This was just one small example of how hard the people of Cambodia work for their education,” she said.    With dreams of being a teacher someday, Brianna hopes to take what she learned from this exciting adventure and make a difference in the lives of her future students. – Michele Duskin You can read more about Grady and Brianna’s 2015 summer trip around the world at theamazingjourneybooks.com

Recipe for success STEFON RISHEL is known for having good taste – he married Briana Sundberg, daughter of Texas Ranger legend Jim Sundberg. But he also knows a thing or two dozen about things that taste good, having just won “Fort Worth Texas” magazine’s Top Chef Challenge.    The executive chef at Max’s Wine Dive was one of four finalists vying to be named the city’s culinary king. Like all great meal preparers, Rishel has a specialty – actually two – he recommends you try. “Either the Peanut Butter and Jelly Wings, they are just that good,” he said, “or my Pot Roast Times Ten. It is a braised Niman Ranch Beef Cheek. We served this for our wedding reception. It quivers at the fork.”    Rishel said his job isn’t for everyone. “It’s hot and humid, and burns and cuts are day-to-day business,” he said. “There is a reason they call us ‘Kitchen Rats.’”   Last month, though, all he heard were compliments. To the top chef, no less.

Texas Trust TEXAS TRUST CREDIT UNION was named a 2015 favorite by our readers. One reason, no doubt, is convenience. The credit union has 14 branches, six in Arlington, along with the company headquarters at 5850 W. Interstate 20.    Texas Trust President and CEO Jim Minge said the credit union is a full-service financial institution. “We provide an array of financial products and services for both consumers and businesses,” he said, “including checking and savings accounts, auto loans, credit and debit cards, mortgage lending, insurance, and investments.”    Minge said Texas Trust’s mission is to build brighter financial futures for its members and the community. “Besides providing services for members that can help them be financially sound,” he said, “we partner with local schools and businesses to provide financial education and fundraising opportunities.” To date, Texas Trust has paid out more than $850,000 to local schools. Joseph Mentesana FOR THE SECOND year in a row, Joseph Mentesana was named a favorite provider of financial services in our annual Readers’ Choice poll. Joseph    “I am able to offer clients financial Mentesana strategies that have a proven track record,” Mentesana said. “At Edward Jones, we also take pride in our ability to offer one-on-one advice.”    Mentesana said that is one of the principles that governs practices at his Edward Jones firm. “Edward Jones is a decidedly different kind of investment firm,” he said.    And, obviously, Mentesana is a decidedly popular investment specialist. The Salvation Army’s MOST Amazing Race 2.0 will offer new challenges THE SALVATION ARMY’S second annual MOST Amazing Race will begin at 1 p.m. on Sept. 12, 2015 and offer some significant financial incentives to the top-three teams. There’s $5,000 first prize reward, $2,000 for the runner-up and $1,000 for the third place team.    Make no mistake, though – those victors will earn their spoils before the race is over. First, they have to do some initial fund-raising for The Salvation Army to become eligible. Two-person teams that garner at least $250 get the chance to vie for the cash prizes – by navigating fun and amazing challenges throughout Arlington.    Last year, racers kicked field goals at AT&T Stadium, took a quiz at the International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame, ate hot wings, built catapults at the University of Texas Arlington School of Engineering and learned new hooping Photo courtesy of The Salvation Army skills at the Levitt Pavilion, just to name a few of the race day Last year’s racers did karaoke at Louie Louie’s Dueling Piano Bar, among many tests. This year’s event will other challenges. This year’s tests feature all-new challenges and should be even more fun. new venues.    “The race is as much about raising awareness of Salvation Army programs as it is about raising money,” said Capt. Patrick Jones, a corps officer for The Salvation Army who is helping coordinate The MOST Amazing Race. ‘‘We want to reach a new crowd of potential donors, volunteers, and supporters. In addition to the racers, this event requires over 100 volunteers. As we recruit new challenge sites, we have the opportunity to get to know local business owners and help draw attention to their business as well. The city benefits because we bring teams in from other areas. Last year, in addition to many Arlington teams, we had teams from Plano, Richardson, Sulphur Springs, Dallas, Ft. Worth, and even one team from Minneapolis.”    Capt. Jones said last year’s inaugural race raised a little over $12,000 and he and his team hope to at least double that this year. “As we add more sponsors and as more racers become familiar with the event, we are confident that this will become a successful, longterm event for The Salvation Army, but also an event in the city of Arlington that many look forward to each year,” he said. “We are going to end the race at the Levitt Pavilion again this year. We will have massage therapists on hand to provide massages to the racers, dinner will be provided, and racers will then have reserved seating on the lawn at the Levitt Pavilion for that night’s concert with Sam Riggs. We will also present the checks to the winners on stage just before the concert.” For more: MOSTAmazingRaceTX.org. arlingtontoday.com • August 2015 • ARLINGTON TODAY

Q&A

A

rlington City Manager Trey Yelverton has held that post since 2012, after serving in various capacities with the city for two decades prior. This month, he discusses what he does – and hopes to do – to enhance the well being of the city.

AT: The general notion about Arlington, both from inside and out, is that it is a “can do” city. Can you share some examples of some of the more important things you’ve seen your city accomplish in the recent past?

Arlington Today: Most people are better-versed on elected officials than they are on what you do. Can you give us a nutshell description of what a city manager does? Trey Yelverton: The City Manager is the chief administrative officer of our local government. The position is responsible for the proper administration of the city’s affairs. Duties include preparing the budget, keeping the mayor and city council advised of our financial condition, ensuring completion of the city’s administrative activities, assessing future needs of the city and making such recommendations as may be desirable. AT: What’s your personal professional history that helped you become qualified to be a city manager?

Trey Yelverton

TY: I completed my undergraduate degree in political science from UT-Arlington in 1988 and my master’s degree in public administration at the University of North Texas in 1989. I am a Credentialed Manager by the International City Manager Association. After a short stint at the City of Dallas Budget Office, I began

my career with the City of Arlington in 1993. I have had the opportunity to be involved in most of the lines of business Arlington offers its residents during my career. I have been fortunate to have been mentored and learned from some of the brightest managers and leaders in the business. 42

TY: The community has come together to achieve many great things in the recent years. Just to name a few: Viridian, Interstate 30 - Three Bridges, UT-Arlington College Park District, Arlington Commons redevelopment, Forum 303 Mall redevelopment, AT&T Stadium (and support of all of the world-class events that have come with it), Arlington Highlands, General Motors expansions, reinstallation of the Caelum Moor Stones, Southwest Nature Preserve, Levitt Pavilion and new airport terminal. AT: What are some of the goals you have for the city in the futue? TY: The mayor and city council establish our priorities each year. In the near term, the city will be focused on 1) championing great neighborhoods, 2) enhancing regional mobility, 3) supporting quality education, 4) investing in our economy, and 5) putting technology to work. On the horizon, we will be working to advance redevelopment, manage our natural resources, build citizen relationships and strategic partnerships, and strengthen our asset management. AT: What are the bigger challenges that your office faces as you attempt to achieve those goals? TY: Putting our staff’s great talents to work to get the most from our people is always on my mind. We constantly work getting the most out of our limited, yet substantial, financial and human capital resources. We have almost 2,500 dedicated city employees that serve our residents. Ensuring they know 1) our community’s priorities and expectations, 2) how to access the information or resources to get the job done, and 3) when to ask for help are ongoing efforts.

HOME SWEET! HOME P

Phil and Diane Mycoskie (pictured) were looking to build the ideal home for new empty nesters who love to entertain large gatherings of family and friends. They created just that – and so much more.

Phil and Diane Mycoskie’s central Arlington dwelling is a beautifully practical haven

hil and Diane Mycoskie wanted to build a home that reflected their new status as empty nesters, but was roomy enough to welcome all five of their children home. As a look at this and the ensuing pages testifies, the Mycoskies hit both targets in the bulls-eye.    The central Arlington lot they found in 2003 backs up to Rush Creek and to a world of nature beyond. Plus, there was one more bonus to the location – it’s just down the street from Phil’s orthopedic practice.   Diane designed the house with architect Don Wheaton and decorated herself with a little help from a designer friend. “Diane has designed five homes and loves the process of creating a new home,” Phil said. “She loves selecting all the paints, granites, tiles, textures, and decor for a home. While some women are paralyzed by those decisions, Diane thrives on them.”    FOR HER DWELLING, she chose to go with the classic English Tudor style, with the kitchen as the center of the home.   “It is an open concept where the family room, breakfast, and kitchen are all one room overlooking the trees and nature in the backyard,” Diane said. “Because we have a large and growing family, we designed an extra-large dining room where we can all be together during the holidays. We place the Christmas tree across from the dining room in the entry nestled next to the staircase where all 15 stockings hang along the stairs.”    Even on non-holiday occasions, family and friends enjoy a beautifully practical haven that says “Welcome!” to all who enter. “We love the extra touches,” Diane said, noting that the house has hardwood floors, exotic granite, large moldings, a diamond antique glass window, wood crank-out windows, a wood and iron staircase, a large cast-stone gas-log fireplace in the family room and a cozy master bedroom with a fireplace and a roomy master bath. >>>

From the wood and iron staircase in this photo to the living room “with a view” below, the Mycoskie home is full of upscale features that make it an ideal place to either relax or entertain.

Diane Mycoskie designed the home in the classic English Tudor style – with the spacious kitchen as the hub. From there, and from practically every other room, family members and guests can take in a beautiful view while they go about their business. Two other “favorite places” in the house are the dining room and the media center.

All those noted, she is particularly partial to one portion of the house, the aforementioned hub. “I love the kitchen,” she said. “I love to cook and enjoy being in the center of everything while I am preparing meals. Everyone always gathers in the kitchen. So we made it the heart of the home with the entertainment of the pool table and media rooms close by.”    Phil has his own favorite nook. “I prefer the pool table room,” he said. “When my sons were young we played a lot of pool. Now, when they come home, we’ll think and talk about the old days and enjoy a little friendly competition. It’s about the only thing that I still can occasionally beat them.”    The pool table room also holds his sports memorabilia. His father, Dr. B.J. Mycoskie, was the first team doctor for the Texas Rangers. “He collected autograph balls for all of us from players all over the country starting in the 1960s,” Phil said. “My brother and I followed him as team doctors for 20-plus years and added to the collection.”    AS COMFORTABLE as the home is inside, both Diane and Phil take equal pleasure when they venture outside. “We love that the backyard view of nature will never be obstructed,” Diane said. “You cannot see another home as you look out our picture windows.”    As with all great houses, various areas of the Mycoskie home have stories to tell. For example, the family room focuses on the fireplace and TV cabinet. “Diane flips on the gas logs everyday in winter for the cozy atmosphere,” Phil said.    The beautiful built-in cabinets, meanwhile, house all the grandkids’ toys and games. ”Whenever one of the five kids, four spouses, or four grandkids (with one on the way) are here,” Diane said, “games are being played at the kitchen table or at the pool table in the adjoining game room.”    And, she added, there always seems to be a sporting event going on in the adjoining media room. “Big kids enjoy the Super Bowl, and the little kids enjoy Disney movies in the leanback media chairs,” she said. “The media room has been more fun than we could have imagined. It truly feels like you are at 52

the theater. We designed that room because we were leaving a sport’s court, batting cage, pingpong table and swimming pool. The kids have enjoyed the trade-off.”    The dining room is large so all the family can sit together. An added bonus there is a beautiful Butler’s Pantry. “Diane has her mother’s 1948 china and sterling, as well as her grandmother’s crystal and German hand-painted china to display.”    THOSE WHO GET to appreciate them run the gamut. “We have hosted many family holidays, friend’s weddings/baby showers and just-for-fun gatherings,” Phil said. “Diane is an elf at Christmas with garland and trees everywhere, and the backyard is perfect for Easter Egg Hunts. Because of the large dining room, we also host our Couples Bible Study group every sixth Monday, as well as other dinner groups to which we belong. Nothing gets you more energized to spruce up your home and look up a special recipe than planning a social occasion in your home.”    It’s a home that Phil described as casual and comfortable, with stylish upscale accents to enjoy.    “We like our home to be warm and welcoming to our family and guests alike,” he said. “We believe a home is to be enjoyed and not too formal and fussy.” 54

Philanthropy Allan Saxe shows one of the valuable works of art he acquired – and donated.

The art of giving Allan Saxe’s donations of works by renowned artists have given UTA and City Hall some true treasures • By Toni Randle-Cook

A

llan Saxe. You may have never met him. But you are sure to have heard, or at least seen, his name somewhere in North Texas.    It is featured on facades from the JPS Health Center for Women to the Fort Worth Zoo, from a dental clinic to several libraries. Even a parkway that runs through Arlington bears the Saxe name.    The reason behind such recognition is Saxe’s philanthropy over the years. It’s estimated that the University of Texas Arlington political science professor has given away millions of dollars in donations.    But it was not all in cash. Some of the gifts were actually pieces of artwork, now very valuable – lithographs and etchings by Pablo Picasso, Georges Rouault, Leonard Baskin and Norman Rockwell to name just a few.   Despite having bought such famous pieces, Saxe does not consider himself an art connoisseur. “I accidentally tumbled into art by wandering around Dallas when I first arrived in the area in the mid-1960s,” he said, noting that he walked into a small contemporary gallery and encountered works by these renowned artists for the Now that he has donated a number of first time. valuable artworks, Saxe says his days as an art collector are over.    The gallery owners, a husband and wife, were very kind to Saxe. He said they essentially became art historians to him and helped him choose which pieces to buy. The prices ranged 56

from a few thousand dollars to $10,000. Saxe could not afford even the less-expensive ones, so the couple allowed him to pay for the artwork in installments. “I paid them off like one would pay off a car, weekly, monthly payments,” Saxe said.    The first one Saxe paid off was a Picasso. After that, he was hooked. But it wasn’t necessarily for the appreciation of the art. Saxe said his desire to purchase the art was for very personal reasons. “Regardless of what people may think,” he said, “I was very lonely at the time, and these famous art names gave me some degree of presence and worth.”    Speaking of worth, the pieces he bought over the years are now more valuable than he ever imagined. And for that reason he admits, his days as an art collector are over. “They have gone up in worth over the years,” he said, “and I could never purchase any of them today at such inflated prices.”   Even decades ago and with the help of installment plans, Saxe said he had several “missed opportunities.” He recalled that one Dallas art dealer repeatedly asked him to buy some newly acquired artwork. But Saxe could not afford it at the time. Besides, he said, “The artist was really a musician.” The musician

THE ART AND Art History Departments at UT Arlington recently took over care and stewardship of the Allan Saxe Masterworks Collection.    The works, donated to the school more than 20 years ago, have been on display in the University Center. But since the younger generations of students were unaware of them, the collection is currently being reframed and will be reintroduced to the community at a special exhibition coming this fall to The Gallery at UT Arlington.    The university is also working to locate and document all of Saxe’s donations as part of a larger project, the UT Arlington Collections Database and Inventory Project. It will showcase the efforts the departments and university are making toward ensuring that these works of art, along with all of the others on campus, are not only revered for their aesthetic quality and beauty, but also for their educational value.    There is no decision as to where the Masterworks will be displayed after the exhibition. The hope is to build an on-campus museum to house the fine art collections and undocumented art forms in the university’s holdings.

was John Lennon. The artwork was a drawing of Yoko Ono, now worth a fortune.    Saxe does not have any of the expensive artwork in his home. He gave all of the pieces away. And true to his philanthropic spirit, Saxe said he donated them “because I enjoy people viewing them apart from museums.”    The Saxe art collection now adorns walls from the Oklahoma Museum of Art to the Modern in Fort Worth and in several Tarrant County community centers, churches and small galleries. You can also find many of the famous lithographs and etchings on display at TCU and on the campus of UT Arlington.    Others, including Rouault’s “Face of Christ” and a Picasso etching, usually hang on the walls at Arlington City Hall, but they have been taken down and moved to a vault during a renovation. They will soon be replaced on the building’s third floor, for all to see. Saxe said it’s one of the city’s “best kept secrets.”

Will YOUR RETIREMENT Be the One You Always Wanted? Start having the “Critical Conversations” now

H

ere’s a regular occurrence in financial advisor Derrick Kinney’s office: Picture the scene – A couple walks into Derrick’s office, excited to discuss their upcoming retirement. They begin to talk and paint the picture of the retirement they want. But suddenly, one spouse’s face turns from excitement to fear. Derrick pauses and asks her, “What’s wrong?” And she replies with a concerned look on her face, “Oh my goodness, he’s going to be home all the time!”    And that’s where it begins – the unrealistic expectations of what retirement is all about. As Derrick Kinney and his team visit with clients throughout the D/FW Metroplex, and specialize in retirement income planning, here are the most critical conversations they have found will help their clients prepare for the retirement they’ve always wanted:   1. How do we keep from running out of money in retirement? The fear of running out of money can completely paralyze couples from taking the time to create a savings plan.   2. How will I find significance in retirement? As an executive, business owner or employee, you may really enjoy your job. Leaving it in retirement can leave you wondering who you will be without a formal job title and responsibilities.   3. How do we provide for aging parents and kids that come back home without going broke? You’ve just finished putting your kids through college and now it’s your

time together – alone! But now the kids come back home. Or you’ve retired and you’re about to start seeing the world – on your schedule. But not so fast, now mom or dad need your help caring for them.    Whether you’re thinking about retirement or already there, it’s never too late or too early to have these critical conversations. You only get one retirement. Make sure it’s the one you’ve always wanted. For the complete list of critical conversations, email Derrick at derrick.t.kinney@ampf.com. mong all the remarkable things about this amazing 75-yearold limousine, the fact that it has fewer than 13,000 actual miles on it tops the story of its multi-state excursion from Detroit through the Midwest and ultimately to Arlington.    I asked its owner – local attorney Grey Pierson – how his 1940 V-16 Cadillac could have made such a journey over all that time averaging less than 175 miles per year. He was most happy to provide the answer, because he knows all about it.    The car rolled off the GM assembly line in November 1939, as one of only 51 versions of the Caddy that would become famous for its unique features that included, for the first time, turn sig60

He put an ad in the Wall Street Journal that was noticed by Grey’s father, Don Pierson, who owned a Cadillac dealership in Eastland, Texas.    “Dad placed the winning bid of $800 and hired a guy to drive it to Texas, where it arrived when I was 6 years old,” Grey fondly recalled. “I fell in love with it right away.”    It remained in Don’s store, sometimes as an attraction, and then was just kept in storage there until Grey finally had it brought to Arlington in 2003 – still bearing the 1957 Wisconsin license plates.    Then began a multi-year labor of love that featured some selective restoration, always inspired by a mission to keep much of the vehicle unmodified – it is, after all, a rarity. The only wear on the car was that which was occasioned by the passage of time.    The biggest project was replacing the exterior leather roof and padding with materials designed to withstand the elements. “I finally found what I needed from a high-end supplier in Connecti-

cut. If my wife knew what I spent on that leather, I would be what is technically known as ‘single,’” Grey joked. “So, please don’t let her know that part of the story.”    The “Sixteen” has all kinds of really neat appointments, such as its nine-passenger capacity, a sort of telephone in the far back seat so riders there can communicate with the driver, art deco touches and even a gold plaque on the dash that warns of a $200 reward that would be paid for the “arrest, conviction and incarceration in a penitentiary of persons stealing this car.”    You can see it yourself right on the floor of Wally Hardin’s Man’s Shop in Downtown Arlington. Wally, quite a car and racing enthusiast himself, and Grey have a long relationship. Grey provided both of Wally’s daughters with getaway cars for their weddings – one of them a Rolls-Royce Silver Streak and the other this magnificent Cadillac.    The timeless beauty seems right at home at Wally’s place, surrounded by men’s clothing and accessories you can’t find anywhere else – just as you aren’t likely to find a better example of a 75-year-old inspired luxury car designated as “Full Classic” – a rating reserved only for the finest automobiles of the 1924-1948 period.

T

heatre Arlington has erased the word “interim” from Valerie Galloway’s job title. Theater President Craig Lidell said the board unanimously agrees that Galloway, who joined the theater as interim executive director in February, is the right person to take Tarrant County’s second oldest and second largest theater to “the next step.”    Galloway, formerly managing director at Lyric Theater in Irving, is well known in area theater. Since moving to Arlington when her husband, Joe Chapa, joined the University of Texas Arlington theater faculty more than 20 years ago, she has acted, directed and taught at Creative Arts Theatre and School and Theatre Arlington. She also was director of education at Casa Manana, with duties including managing classes, productions and budgeting for the 700-student school.

Denton Yockey, executive producer at Casa Manana for 11 years and now executive director at the Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts in Orange Park, Fla., applauded the theater’s decision. He said successful arts administrators are a bit like the proverbial needle in a haystack.    “It’s rare to find an individual like Valerie, who is a talented artist and a strategic, organized businessperson: Someone with the whole right brain, left brain thing in balance,” Yockey said. “[She} is thoughtful and prudent about business and connects so well with people that when she makes a difficult decision, all sides feel good about it. She is always cool and calm under pressure and never gets stressed.” The entire Galloway-Chapa family is deeply involved in theater. Two of their daughters, twins Kaitlin and Graham, traveled

“Favorite Chiropractor” Dr. Kenyon Godwin, Godwin Chiropractic

by train to attend Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas. (Imagine the morning rush to get the kids not to the local school, but to the TRE station in Hurst.) Kaitlin went on to earn a BFA in acting from Southern Methodist University, and Graham received a BFA in Musical Theatre from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. Both young women now work professionally in theater. Younger sister Beckett is a sophomore at Booker T. Washington and is performing Shakespeare in Dallas this summer. Valerie said the twins literally grew up in Green Rooms (the area off stage where actors await their cues.) “When we first came to Arlington, the twins were babies, and Joe and I were both in a play at UTA,” she said. “It was quite a sight to see Dennis Maher (professor of theatre and dramaturge at the university) with a baby in each arm, blocking the show.” The couple married when both were graduate school students and theater teachers at Ole Miss. The twins were born over Christmas break, and the young parents arranged their schedules so that one of them could be home with the baby girls. Galloway said she is excited about Theatre Arlington’s 2015 season – the first one she has chosen. She said she is driven to make the theater’s artistry superior, while producing entertaining shows that will sell tickets and fill the seats. She also wants to gain a better understanding in the community that the theater is not just about the arts; it is an economic asset to the city. She is armed with economic statistics that prove her point. Tickets are now on sale for Theatre Arlington’s 2015-16 season. For information, call (817) 275-7661.

his September, when a 54-foot-long, 12-foot-tall metal sculpture becomes the first public art project of its kind in downtown Arlington, it will not be making its debut. The piece, titled “Dream,” will enjoy an inaugural run at the annual Burning Man festival, held in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada.    This year’s festival runs from Aug. 30-Sept. 7.    The custom sculpture, designed by artists Jeff Schomberg and Laura Kimpton, who are known for their large word sculptures, is made up of the five letters of the word “dream.” Each letter weighs between 1,000 and 1,500 pounds.    Cut in rows within each letter are silhouettes of flying birds. By day, the pattern enhances the letters with texture, movement and depth. By night, interactive lights bring the piece to life. “While the cachet of showing at Burning Man enhances the story of the piece, the selection of the word ‘dream’ for the sculpture happened organically, right here in Arlington,” said Bob Pruitt, Arlington Today contributing photographer, entrepreneur, and the mastermind behind the project. “It was inspired by the City of Arlington brand ‘Arlington, The American Dream City.’”    Pruitt isn’t alone in his enthusiasm over the project. “We’re excited to have our piece in Arlington, Texas,” said Schomberg, “particularly one with such a strong connection to the city’s identity.”    In addition to a singular sculpture, Pruitt envisions an urban park near the new downtown Arlington Central Library with “Dream” as its anchor.    Downtown Arlington Management Corporation has pledged $25,000 in support of the $75,000 sculpture project.

Freeze away fat CoolSculpting® from Arlington Surgical MedSpa is a proven way to get your body trimmer and slimmer

A

rlington Surgical MedSpa offers a cutting-edge technology called CoolSculpting that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat that resists normal efforts through diet and exercise.    “CoolSculpting technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin,” said Natalie Morrissey, CoolSculpting team leader at Arlington Surgical MedSpa. “The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), then die. Over two to three months, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead fat cells, leaving a more sculpted you.”    The first step to CoolSculpting is a free consultation. Morrissey said the practice has after-hours appointments and Saturday appointments. Here is more about the process:   CoolSculpting contours the body. “This enhances existing features and complements weight loss,” Morrissey said. CoolSculpting treats the abdomen, inner and outer thighs and flanks (or love handles). “Results are comparable to liposuction without many of the side effects such as scarring, dimpling and downtime,” Morrissey said.

“It takes two to three months to see the best results of CoolSculpting, [which occur] through a natural process of elimination.”    CoolSculpting is a one-hour procedure. “Patients have free time during the procedure to relax and watch TV, read or browse the internet,” she said. “CoolSculpting removes fat from the body for good – meaning there’s no need for retreatment of the area unless even better results are wanted,” she said.    All areas can be treated in as little as one appointment. Morrissey said appointments can be as spaced out over as short of a time period as the patient prefers. “CoolSculpting removes fat from the body for good – meaning there’s no need for retreatment of the area unless even better results are wanted,” she said. CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared procedure. “It’s the only [such] fat freezing technology, meaning that the results are proven,” Morrissey said. “We expect to see approximately 28 percent loss of fat volume in the areas treated. The results are noticeable, lasting and proven.”    For more information, visit Coolsculptingarlingtonsurgical.com. 圀圀圀⸀䴀伀匀吀䄀䴀䄀娀䤀一䜀刀䄀䌀䔀吀堀⸀伀刀䜀

Tennis Tips

Find your comfort zone

One key to success on the court: practicing what is preached.

Whether you’re a novice or someone getting back in the game, here are good tacks to take • By Angel Martinez

The possibilities are endless. And breathtaking.

WHEN I AM OUTSIDE of the Arlington Tennis Center, the two comments I hear most are, “I’ve always wanted to play tennis, but just don’t know where to start,” or, “I used to play years ago … I would love to play again, but I would be HORRIBLE!” The beginner – A self-assessment can determine what type of setting is in comfort zone. Some new players prefer one-on-one through private lessons. Others prefer a more social setting with group classes. Next, choose a reputable facility or club that has qualified staff to get you off to the right start.    Once you choose the “where,” private lessons or group instruction will allow you to learn tennis in the environment that best suits you. Expect to do some homework. A lesson or class is not enough to reinforce what you have learned. PLAY! After initial instruction, your teaching professional will give you options for the next level that may include repeating the class to develop muscle memory, group drills, additional private lessons, beginning play with same-level players, or a combination of instruction and play.

PREMIUM SYNTHETIC GRASS DuPont™ ForeverLawn® Select Synthetic Grass provides a waterless, low-maintenance alternative to live grass. Designed to look and feel realistic from thatch to top, this product creates a lush, well-manicured landscape with minimal upkeep that stays green year-round. 76

Returning to the game – A great way for former players who want to return to tennis is to first choose the “where,” and start with a private lesson. A teaching professional can help you find your best return point: advanced classes, adult drills, private lessons or leagues. Returning players generally have a working knowledge of the game, and they just need a refresher on strokes and strategy, or simulated game situations. The teaching professional can guide you to the right option.    Remember, whether you are a beginner player or are picking up the game again after a few years away, you are taking the right steps to invest in your health and to begin enjoying the lifetime sport of tennis. Angel Martinez is on staff at Arlington Tennis Center. He is the women’s tennis coach at Texas Wesleyan University.

Health & Fitness

Better sleep = a better life MCA’s Director of Imaging Services Tim Everidge shares ways the hospital addresses slumber issues

S

leep disorders affect virtually every facet of a person’s health. That’s why Medical Center Arlington (MCA) has crafted treatments – and created the Sleep Diagnostic Center – to assist patients in this vital area. This month, Tim Everidge, MCA’s director of imaging services, discusses some of the ways the hospital works with patients to help them get more healthy rest. Arlington Today: A great place to start this discussion would be to discuss the importance of sleep. What does it do and why do we need it? Tim Everidge: In the past, people thought of sleep as a part of our daily lives when the mind and body was at rest. We now know that sleep is a period of time when there is much activity in the brain that plays a critical role in obtaining optimal health and well being.    Research has demonstrated the benefits of getting an appropriate amount of sleep, which includes the ability to retain information, perform better on memory tasks, faster repair of tissue, and enhance the immune system to fight disease. AT: How is Medical Center Arlington involved in helping people address this important element of their lives? TE: The Medical Center Arlington is committed to the care and improvement of human life. The Sleep Diagnostic Center allows us to fulfill this commitment by providing a dedicated service that addresses sleep and sleep-related problems that affect important aspects of our lives such as work, driving and social activities. Our medical specialists are able to assist individuals that deal with health issues that are associated with sleep problems like stroke, asthma attacks, epilepsy, cancer and depression. AT: What does a sleep evaluation entail? TE: One of the most common evaluation tools is an in-lab sleep study referred to as a polysomnogram (PSG). It is a comprehensive test that measures multiple parameters required for the assessment of sleep and wake disorders. The results from the study are analyzed by a qualified doctor to determine whether or not you have a sleep disorder.    The diagnostic PSG is the general monitoring of sleep architecture (such as the amount of REM and NREM sleep, number of 82

ARLINGTON TODAY • August 2015 • arlingtontoday.com

arousals) and a variety of body functions during sleep, including breathing patterns, heart rhythms and limb movements. It is performed to identify sleep-related breathing disorders or abnormal movements during sleep.    Other types of sleep studies that can be performed include Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) titration, Split-night PSG with PAP titration, and Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT). AT: Once problems/potential issues are diagnosed, how does the hospital craft treatment procedures that can address the diagnosis? TE: Sleep disorders can be managed effectively once they are correctly diagnosed. The Medical Center Arlington has a multidisciplinary team of physician specialists and other healthcare professionals that collaboratively coordinate a plan of care based on the type of sleep issue. The most common sleep disorders include insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome (RLS), and narcolepsy.    For short-term insomnia, doctors may prescribe sleeping pills. The recommendation for mild insomnia is the practice of good sleeping habits. Other alternative treatment therapies are applied for more serious cases.    Sleep apnea can be overcome through weight loss or by preventing the individual from sleeping on his or her back. Other people with more severe sleep apnea may need special devices or surgery to correct the disorder.    RLS is usually treated with drugs that affect the neurological system that create the urge to move the legs and feet. Stimulants, antidepressants, or other drugs can help control the symptoms associated with narcolepsy. AT: What’s the best way for a patient with a potential sleep issue to contact the hospital, and where does the process go from there? TE: If you have trouble falling asleep night after night, or you always feel tired the next day, then you may have a sleep disorder and should see a physician. Your primary care physician can contact Medical Center Arlington’s scheduling services at (817) 472-4857 if he or she determines that you need diagnostic testing for a sleep problem.

Could this be the year? A more mature Cowboys team prepares for what could be a special season • By John Rhadigan

We have seen the Dez Bryant sideline tantrums when the game is not going well or when he is not getting the ball. I shudder to think what those would have looked like if he had not gotten his money and a sense of security. He is arguably the Cowboys’ best player, so it was vital to have him here and happy.

hen the Dallas Cowboys are good, the world watches. That means the eyes of Texas – and the world – will be on Arlington this season. After a season where the Cowboys were a blown call away from the NFC Championship game, for the first time in 20 years there is a reason for real optimism. What I see is a team that has grown up.    Maturity is not always easy to find among men who play a kids game, but there are real signs of maturity, from the front office to the field.    It may be hard to imagine that the 72-year-old owner and general manager of America’s Team needed to grow up. But in football terms he did and he has. It has actually been happening for the past several off seasons. We have seen Jerry Jones transition from the spoiled rich kid who wanted the shiniest new toy (a.k.a. skill position players) to a guy who has drafted offensive lineman with regularity.    The decision to let the NFL’s leading rusher leave and sign with a division rival is a classic example of this growth. By building the team from the inside out, Jerry may end up with the only shiny toy he really cares about, another Lombardi Trophy.    Of course, he can’t let all of the skill position players leave. That is why the decision to sign Dez Bryant to a long-term contract was wise. The fact that Dez signed a deal that is less valuable than the one Calvin Johnson has in Detroit represents maturity on the part of Bryant. The contract will pay Dez $70 million, $45 million of which are guaranteed.    We have seen the Dez Bryant sideline tantrums when the game is not going well or when he is not getting the ball. I shudder to think what those would have looked like if he had not gotten his money and a sense of security. He is arguably the Cowboys’ best player, so it was vital to have him here and happy.    Dez might be the best, but he is not the most important Cowboys’ player. That would be Tony Romo.    The Cowboys quarterback has grown is subtle ways that allow him to master his remarkable athletic ability and skill.

Recently, I was master of ceremonies at an event where Tony received a lifetime achievement award. He joked, “am I really old enough to get a lifetime achievement award? I still feel like I am in my 20s.” He may feel that way, but he does not play that way, and later in a very polished acceptance speech, Tony revealed part of the reason why: His growth as a football player came through a selfhelp book. Tony believes that his success is a simple math equation, and the numbers don’t lie.    The book is called “Outliers: The Story of Success.” In it author Malcolm Gladwell often refers to the “10,000 hour rule.” Tony paraphrased for those of us who had not read the book and said Gladwell asserts that to be truly great at anything you must devote 10,000 hours of practice to it. Tony reminded that he did not start playing football until he was 16 years old, so he did not reach 10,000 hours of football until he was in his late 20s and in the NFL. He said, “I would see high school kids, 14 years old who could make better throws than me, and I was an NFL starter.”    In the course of achieving those 10,000 hours he has also become a husband and a father and a “grown up.” He has gotten better with age. Here is another example he shared: He does not remember when, but a few years into his time as a starter he stopped caring about personal numbers. He says now that he wants to win for everyone else as much as for himself. He mentioned Jason Witten, the Jones family and the fans. He wants to win for them. He wants to win for you.    The season begins on Sept. 13 at AT&T Stadium right here in Arlington. If you are not at the corner of Collins and Randol Mill that day you will be watching the game on television, and so will the rest of the world. Welcome back, Cowboys!
