AN ALL STAR LINEUP SELECTED BY THE FANS

Per history.com, on July 6, 1933, Major League Baseball’s first All Star Game took place at Chicago’s Comiskey Park. The brainchild of a determined sports editor, the event was designed to bolster the sport and improve its reputation during the darkest years of the Great Depression. Originally billed as a one-time “Game of the Century,” it has now become a permanent and much-loved fixture of the baseball season.

Per another journalist – who, for the record, wasn’t even selected to the All Star team the year his dad served as one of the coaches, thus securing his own place in history as the only kid baseball player not selected to the All Star team the year his dad served as one of the coaches – Arlington Today magazine’s All Star edition has contributed to helping him get over his great depression. I mean, whose Dad doesn’t select his kid to the Little League All Star team?

Our All Star issue is one of the highlights of this publication’s “season,” in that it represents the ideal melding of the two most important elements in publishing: readers and the people/ places/things they read about.

For nearly a decade, we’ve let our readers tell us, via an online poll that runs every spring, just which entities in the Arlington/Mansfield/Grand Prairie area most tickle their fancies.

They share which eateries make them say, “yum.” They offer evidence about legal professionals who not only represent them well but represent their profession well, as well. They promote health care providers who help them talk, hear, see, breathe and sleep better.

They even tell us where they go when somebody tells them to take a hike. (Spoiler alert: They’ve told us the same place every time we’ve asked them to go to our virtual polling place at arlingtontoday.com to select a favorite local park.)

Mainly what they tell us, though, is that this great city and region has a lot of “favorites,” even if some of them aren’t listed in the All Star report that begins on page 30. Every spring, our diligent vote tabulators sort through literally thousands of cast ballots – and then sort through them again, because (A) they want to ensure accuracy, and (B) they want to revel in the notion that literally thousands of ballots were cast. That means our readers really care about the services and service providers that make their lives better. It also means that they are invested in what we at this magazine have been trying to do from Day One: Celebrate Arlington and the surrounding burgs.

I write all that to say this, knowing full well that many of you have skipped this page and jumped right to the All Star section: We appreciate our readers’ passion. And we congratulation its beneficiaries.

(Oh, and I forgive you, Dad. More or less.)

SOY COWBOY WILL BE THE RESTAURANT ANCHOR AT THE NEW LOEWS PROJECT

Loews Hotels & Co. last month topped off the $550 million Loews Arlington Hotel and Convention Center and announced the new signature restaurant.

As part of this milestone event, the hotel company has also named the hotel’s signature restaurant anchor, Soy Cowboy, a pan-Asian concept, from Houston-based restaurateur, Benjamin Berg of Berg Hospitality.

Berg Hospitality Group conceives, launches and operates restaurants in Texas with a commitment to giving back to the local communities. The budding culinary group is responsible for creating B&B Butchers & Restaurant in Houston and Fort Worth, B.B. Italia Bistro & Bar, B.B. Lemon, The Annie Café & Bar, Turner’s, NoPo Café, Market & Bar, and Trattoria Sofia, along with more concepts to come.

Soy Cowboy will be an upscale and sophisticated panAsian concept, transporting guests on an adventurous tour through the flavors of China, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan and more. The menu will include a selection of sharable plates exploring classic Asian cooking techniques including traditional sushi, tempura, wok, robatayaki, hibachi and teppanyaki, as well as Korean barbeque. Guests can also expect an innovative cocktail/wine/sake menu.

Opening in early 2024, Loews Arlington Hotel and Convention Center will feature 888 guestrooms and suites, 200,000 square feet of indoor meeting space, 66,000 square feet of outdoor space, including an event lawn, five food and beverage outlets, a 1,550-space parking garage, a resort-style beach club with two swimming pools, man-made beach, and cabanas, fire pits and a water slide. The Arlington Convention Center, also operated by Loews Hotels & Co, will be located within the hotel.

RAISE YOUR HAND if you think this summer’s heat pales compared to what you experienced here in 1980, when you had to sit on metal bleachers while watching the Rangers play at Arlington Stadium.

LOCAL EATERIES WILL PARTICIPATE IN DFW RESTAURANT WEEK TO BENEFIT LENA POPE

Four Arlington restaurants are participating in the 2022 DFW Restaurant Week, which will take place Aug. 8-14, with optional extension lasting until Sept. 4. This year marks the 25th anniversary of DFW Restaurant Week, which is North Texas’ largest annual culinary event and the second longest-running restaurant week in the U.S. (behind New York City).

For each meal purchased at a Tarrant-area participating restaurant, 20 percent will be donated back to Fort Worth-based nonprofit Lena Pope, which provides prevention and early intervention services that support child development and improve the behavioral and mental health of children and families. Since 1998, DFW Restaurant Week has raised more than $2.7 million for the charity.

This year’s participating restaurants will offer threecourse prix fixe dinners for $39 or $49, with some offering two-course lunch or brunch menus for $24 or $29.

ARLINGTON TOMORROW FOUNDATION GRANT HELPS LEVITT’S SHARE THE STAGE INITIATIVE PROSPER

Share the Stage, a Levitt Pavilion initiative supporting North Texas musicians, continued strong through a second concert season, thanks in large part to a $50,000 grant from the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation awarded to Levitt earlier this summer.

Conceived as a means of providing paid gigs and exposure for local artists in the wake of the pandemic, Share the Stage seeks to showcase both emerging and established North Texas musicians, primarily through bookings as opening acts for the Levitt’s signature free concert series, which runs May-October.

Letatia Teykl, the venue’s executive director, says Share the Stage has paid more than 100 local artists’ contracts to date for North Texas singer-songwriters and bands, many of which are emerging music artists, women, and artists of color.

“As a member of the North Texas arts community, we feel strongly about the need to create paid performance opportunities for local musicians,” says Teykl. “We created this initiative to give access to the Levitt stage, to our in-person and live-streaming fans, and our professional production crew. It’s a really cool giveback to the North Texas music industry ecosystem.”

Local artists who appeared at the Levitt this season as part of Share the Stage include: Abbey Brown & The Sound (Americana), AdamMarie (alt folk), Buddy Whittington (blues/R&B), Carlos Ramos (Latin), Cash Byers (country), Conjunto Baraja de Oro (Tejano/Conjunto), Grupo Pression (Latin), Igimèjí (funk/soul), Jackie Minton (folk), and Larry Ladale (pop/R&B).

EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT

SHINE BEHAVIORAL ACADEMY

Arlington’s SHINE BEHAVIORAL ACADEMY provides comprehensive, behaviorally based special education and intervention for children with autism and other developmental disabilities in elementary age students.

The educational philosophy is based upon the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA), with a focus on customization and parent education. Classrooms are kept small for personalized instruction and the number of children in each class is based on the function and abilities of the students within the class itself. Small group, as well as 1:1 teaching, is available for every child as needed throughout the day.

“SBA is the only private academic institution in the area that embraces children who are non-verbal, says Jennifer Nankivell, SBA board secretary and mother of a 7-year-old autistic son. “A student that uses an Augmentative and alternative communication device is not automatically disregarded because of the different approach the teachers and staff might need to take. Students that struggle with behavioral issues are observed and plans to best serve that student are developed with the lead teacher and the schools Board Certified Behavioral Analyst.”

These plans can include things as simple as providing the student extra breaks in the day to more complex plans that involve working with the family to be sure the student learns positive and appropriate behaviors at home and school.

“The academy meets the students where they are,” Nankivell says, “meaning that lessons are taught in one group, but if student A needs modifications, student B needs extra challenges, and student C simply needs to type their response, all accommodations are made and met in that lesson. The student doesn’t feel different or singled out. They are simply happy and learning!”

BEAT THE HEAT? GOOD LUCK WITH THAT THIS SUMMER

You know it’s hot when you spot a guy in a white tank top, baggie gray shorts, and flip-flops with a pair of fans strung around his neck.

Just a couple of small ones, but still. They’re fans.

Around his neck.

“Love it, love it, love it,” he gushes.

I bumped into tank top dude at the corner of Abram and Center streets on an insanely sunny Saturday afternoon. He says he’s on his way to meet a friend for lunch. Temp is hovering around 99, according to my iPhone weather app.

We chat about the meteorological conditions, as we Texans are prone to do in the heart of summer, but try as I might, I can’t stop staring at those darn fans.

He looks ridiculous.

Cool and comfortable, but ridiculous.

“Tyron Adams,” the tank top dude says, sending a fist bump my way. “Got this on Amazon for, like, 12 dollars. So I never go anywhere without air blowing in my face.”

Adams says he’s in his early 30s and works for a bicycle shop in Fort Worth. We have our ways of beating the heat. This is his.

“Now that’s an interesting idea,” says Johanna Gilford, a 30ish mother of two rambunctious boys, who is strolling by us heading into the public library.

Her way of heat coexistence is going from one air conditioned spot to another.

“We stay at the library for at least two hours, sometimes three, depending on what activities are going on here,” Gilford says. “You don’t want to stay in the house with these two.”

I see. Her sons are 8 and 6. They wrestle and push one another and climb over tables.

Gilford doesn’t flinch.

“At some point, we sit down and read books,” she says, smiling. “I swear.”

Some might bristle at the fact that they are out at all, but kids will go stir crazy – and drive you crazy – stuck in the house.

Emergency Management Coordinator Shawna Lemley of the Arlington Fire Department has a video online urging us to take the dangers of heat seriously. Whatever you do, she says, “avoid direct sunlight” – or stay put at home.

I eventually head over to the Arlington Art Museum next door. It’s now 101, according to my app.

I duck into an open door at the museum only to find that it’s for summer art campers. I run into Shelley Overton, standing at the door.

“At the end of the camp, the kids will have a whole art portfolio,” she says. “Different kinds of paintings, sculptures, things like that.”

I ask about the heat, of course.

“This is a great way to get them out of the house but not deal with this heat,” she says. “We went swimming the other day and nearly burned to death.”

If only the camps were more than a half day for her seven-yearold.

“So the question is always what to do with the rest of the day in this heat?”

As I walk out, I run into Lorenzo, “just Lorenzo,” he says. Dressed in jeans, a long-sleeved T-shirt, and a Rangers baseball cap, he sits on a bench outside the door. He has a small shopping cart full of clothes. He’s obviously homeless.

How do you beat this heat? I ask him.

“I don’t,” he says. “I go into the library, and the McDonald’s over there to cool off. Not bad at night. When it’s hot, people feel sorry for you and want to talk to you. That’s cool. Usually, I just want to be left alone.”

I get the hint. It’s now 103.

As I head back to my car and its glorious air conditioning, I think of Lemley telling me to wear light-colored clothing (check), drink water (check), and limit physical activity (that’s why I’m leaving, so check).

Lemley mentioned nothing of carrying a couple of fans around the neck, but that sounds awfully good right now.

Kos/Danchak Audiology & Hearing Aids

Winner: Audiologist

An All Star for the seventh straight year, Kos/Danchak Audiology & Hearing Aids has been providing hearing solutions for North Texas patients for more than three and a half decades.

Owner Melissa Danchak began working at Kos/ Danchak Audiology in 1997 and purchased the practice five years later. With two and a half decades of experience helping those with hearing challenges in the Arlington and surrounding communities, Dr. Danchak has a passion for providing unparalleled care and service for her patients – as evidenced by the hundreds of online reviews they have been sharing for years.

While her formal education gave her the book knowledge needed to become an audiologist, Dr. Danchak certainly believes that learning is a lifelong process.

“Like any small business, we experience change, adversity, success, and a whole host of other ‘stuff’ on a regular basis,” she says. “We try to learn, every day. We evaluate how we help people, and we try to make the hearing health care experience better for the people that we meet with each day. Our goal is for each person to have a better experience with

us every time they visit. The fact that we have thousands of patients that have been trusting us with their hearing needs for 10 and 15 years tells us that we are doing a good job of providing a positive experience for our patients.”

Dr. Danchak and her team live by a fairly simple (professional) philosophy: Do our absolute best to serve our patients and fellow employees to the best of our ability; continue to learn and grow, every day, so that we can accomplish that in the best way possible!

“We make a difference in people’s lives,” she says. “We see it on their faces when they hear and understand clearly what a loved one is saying. We see it when a spouse or child experiences the feeling of being able to communicate again without raising their voice or repeating themselves. Patients and their families share with us that their investment in better hearing, and us, has changed their lives. It’s not always easy for people to admit that they have hearing loss or that they need hearing aids. We know we make a difference in people’s lives because so many of the new patients we meet each day are referrals from current patients that we have been helping for years! It doesn’t get any better than that.”

Al Clark

Winner: Insurance Agent, Insurance-Home & Auto

Al Clark has been helping Arlington-area customers with their insurance needs for more than four decades. So it isn’t surprising that many of those clients have teamed to reward his service and loyalty to them by selecting Clark to the Readers’ Choice All Star team for the sixth consecutive year.

When he established the Al Clark State Farm Agency on Sept.1, 1979, Clark wasn’t sure just what was in store for the new company. But he was certain he would give his best to those he served. His best has become THE BEST.

“As a new resident to Texas, I started from scratch with one part-time employee to help me build my agency,” Clark recalls. “Forty-plus years later of consistently providing insurance and financial services to the people in the DFW area, the Al Clark Agency has been recognized by State Farm and the Arlington community with numerous awards and recognition for our outstanding service to our customers and to the community.”

The accolades include the following: Arlington Small Business Leader of the Year; 19 times the leading State Farm producing agency in the United States out of 19,000 agencies and Texas Congress of Teachers and Parents recognition.

In addition to the awards, Clark has given back to the community, financially supporting the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Tarrant County, The Salvation Army, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, The Arlington Rotary Foundation scholarship program, the YMCA, Theatre Arlington and The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts.

“Having earned a Doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota, I have always considered education as a major emphasis of support,” Clark says. “My wife Shalyn and I have been honored to financially provide backing for many educational venues, including UTA, Tarrant County

College, Baylor University, the University of Minnesota, Bemidji State University, along with local elementary, junior high and high schools in Arlington. Most people probably do not know that I was a teacher, coach, advisor, and administrator in public education for 15 years in Minnesota.”

Clark and his current team offer an array of insurance products that include coverage of auto, home, property, business, life, health as well as various financial products.

Clark notes that throughout the past four-plus decades he has been blessed with excellent employees who have helped provide professional service and advice to their clients.

“What I think makes our company special,” he says, “is that we truly believe, live and demonstrate our professional values of helping people every day in every way we can through both our business practices and our involvement in the community.”

Donna J. Smiedt Winner: Attorney-Family Law

Donna J. Smiedt, principal attorney at The Family Law Firm of Donna J. Smiedt, has been named a Readers’ Choice All Star for the fifth straight year – and with good cause.

Smiedt has been a Board Certified Family Law Attorney since 1991, and she leads a team of divorce attorneys that approaches the complexities of Texas law with the help of a combined total of nearly 50 years of experience.

Her journey to All Star status is a fascinating tale. Donna was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was 14. She graduated from Lake Highlands High School in Dallas at the age of 15, and thereafter attended Southern Methodist University. After graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science in 1982 she obtained her Juris Doctorate from SMU School of Law in 1985 at the age of 22.

She established a solo practice in Dallas, serving clients there for a decade. “Then, on a hot Texas summer day,” she recalls, “I met the love of my life, an Arlington resident, and I immediately assimilated into this city. I instantly knew that I was home.“

Donna is very active in the community, serving on the board of the Arlington Animal Shelter, as President of the Arlington Bar Association and of the Arlington Business and Professional Women’s Association.

She has won many awards as an attorney. She has twice been selected by her peers as a Superlawyer (an honor reserved for 5% of practicing lawyers in Texas). She was voted by clients as an Avvo “Top Rated Lawyer” for many years, including 2020 and 2021. Additionally, she was voted by peers as a Top Attorney

in Fort Worth every year for over a decade. She also was named the favorite family lawyer in Arlington Today’s Readers’ Choice All Star edition the past four years.

As an outspoken advocate for the best interest of the children going through high-conflict family law custody battles, Donna and her Non-Equity Partner, Desaray R. Muma, have built sterling reputations as specialists in the area of high-conflict custody litigation. This specialization coupled with her equally extensive knowledge of separate tracing and characterization cases, as well as representing wealthy clients with large complex estates or closely held family businesses, make her the first choice for many clients needing this level of superlative representation in the field of family law.

RJ Construction

Winner: Remodeler F: Backyard Remodeler, Roofing

Six-time All Star R J Construction – and its venerable owner, Robert Jordan – have come a long way since the company was founded in 2007 with one employee, Robert, working from the back of a truck. Jordan now has more than 40 full-time crew members and lots of trucks – and now, in addition to the Arlington locale, he has offices in Kansas City and Greenville, S.C.

Jordan, who started as a roofer to make ends meet in high school, now not only roofs, but builds, remodels, plumbs, remodels backyards and more. In essence, any part of a home that needs to be created, fixed or enhanced falls in Robert and Company’s domain.

“Our goal,” says Jordan, “is to provide a wide array of services to meet any need that may arise, and to become your contractor of choice for all of your homeowner needs.”

The yearning to do stellar work for his neighbors is one of the things that sets Jordan – and his company – apart.

“This is my community – I was born and raised in Arlington – and my clients are like family,” he says. “When I started this business I made a promise that I would

do whatever it takes to make sure I took care of my customers – even if it’s not easy to do.”

In any given month, RJ Construction will be working on 75 to 150 jobs – some big, some not so. Most of his business comes via word of mouth. He also markets on his Facebook page (facebook.com/RJConstructionDFW), where his company’s craftsmanship and artistry is on display in the Photos section for all the area to see. One part of that work – a hailstorm repair for which he used prestigious Ludowici tile (imported in 1924) to replace a damaged roof – earned him a 2016 Golden Hammer Award for “Outstanding Residential Roofing Project.”

The company also has earned the Presidents Club award as the top roofer in the DFW Metroplex from GAF, the largest shingle manufacturer in the world. Only 1/10% of contractors receive this honor. In 2020, RJ Construction was named TOP 100 Roofing Companies in the country by Roofing Contractor Magazine.

“In each of the jobs that earned an award I got to do something to help someone in my hometown have a better home,” Jordan says. “That’s why we do this.”

Dino’s Subs

For the seventh straight year, local fans of the sub sandwich have made Dino’s Subs their choice for favorite Deli / Sandwich Shop. Dino’s has been an Arlington institution and the “go to” place for sandwiches since 1980, when the late Larry Dino first opened the restaurant’s doors.

Since then, his daughter Jade has stepped into the lead role at the eatery, and it has continued to make sandwiches so fresh and delicious that they prompted one customer to offer this Yelp review: “Dino’s is an Arlington staple. Everyone must visit and experience it for yourself.”

A Facebook friend added this: “Dino’s is just like home! I love them and travel in from Tyler just to pick up sandwiches.”

Jade says she is proud to carry on an Arlington tradition. “My dad said there’s one key to success in the restaurant business: ‘never, ever, go down on quality,” she says.

That, obviously, is never an issue at Dino’s Subs.

David’s Barbecue

W: BBQ

There’s little question David’s Barbecue has found its way into the hearts – by way of the tummies – of our reader voters, who, for the seventh straight year, have tabbed the popular eatery as their favorite local source for BBQ.

David’s offers a wide range of tasty barbecue items, each sliced or chopped as you place your order.

David’s Barbecue opened in Pantego in 1988 as a fourth-generation, family owned restaurant that has its roots in the North Texas barbecue eatery started by Elias Bryan in 1910. Today, David’s Barbecue is owned by Jimmy Harris and continues to draw critical acclaim.

For instance, this yelp.com review: “I have been going to Bryan-family restaurants for over 50 years now. After the first couple of months at David’s I didn’t need to even say my order - they knew: Sliced beef sandwich, open face. I want to be embalmed in their BBQ sauce!”

Now, THAT’S an endorsement!

Mercury Chophouse

For the fifth consecutive year, Mercury Chophouse Arlington has earned a spot on our All Star team, which is a rather notable achievement, considering the restaurant has only been open for ... wait for it .. the past five years.

The upscale eatery has evolved into one of the area’s “go to” dining destinations for outstanding food and service – and, from its perch on the ninth floor of the Brookhollow Two office building, it provides the best view of Arlington’s Entertainment District found anywhere.

Mercury Chophouse has gained a reputation around North Texas as the place to meet for a business lunch or for a dinner to celebrate a special occasion. Because of its vast reserve of fine wines and cocktails and the small-plate selection introduced a couple of years ago, Mercury Chophouse has drawn in the happy hour crowd, as well.

Your dining experience features chef-prepared delicacies, a stellar staff and lots of fun, every time.

Piccolo Mondo

W: Italian Cuisine

Sugar Bee Sweets Bakery/The Hive

For the seventh year in a row, our sweet-toothed readers have tabbed Sugar Bee Sweets as their favorite place to go to satisfy their craving for delectable baked goods.

Sugar Bee Sweets specializes in cakes and sweets of all kinds, including wedding and party cakes, cupcakes, cake balls, cookies, and more.

The bakery opened in 2010, and since then it has won more than four dozen awards, and its sweet desserts have been featured in magazines and on television programs, including the popular series “Cake Hunters.”

Open Tuesday-Saturday, Sugar Bee Sweets serves up a rotating menu of pastries and sweets (each week’s flavors are posted on social media), and the eatery offers a full coffee and tea bar, as well as lunch right under the same roof at The Hive Daytime Eatery (which, for the second year in a row, earned All Star status in the Deli/Sandwich Shop category).

Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop

Mondo has landed a spot on our annual All Star team for the eighth consecutive year, so it’s safe to say owner Antonio Capaccioli knows Italian cuisine – and how to present it to customers in a virtually perfect way.

Piccolo

Capaccioli says the popular eatery is simply what he would look for in a fine dining experience – if he were to venture to the homeland. That means great food, of course, but also attention to details that make venturing to Piccolo Mondo a true dining experience.

“We’re more traditional in style,” he says. “I traveled a lot when I was younger, and when I found something I liked to eat, I took note. When we opened the restaurant here, we offered things I liked to eat myself.”

While that would probably be enough, he and his team also offer alluring ambiance, a popular piano bar and a banquet room that is perfect for big groups.

One really big group, that representing our readers, certainly approves.

829 E. Lamar Blvd. 817-265-91749 • piccolomondo.com

Foreach of the past three years, Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop has touched our readers’ hearts – OK, more accurately, their tummies – and earned All Star status as one of their favorite bakeries.

And with just cause.

Owners Pam and Charles Pierson have elevated piemaking into a veritable art form.

They offer daily flavors such as Southern Custard, Granny’s Apple, Chocolate Cream, Key Lime, Peanut Butter Cream, I-40 (pecans, chocolate chips and a sprinkle of toasted coconut), Coconut Cream, Chewy Chocolate Chip and Nanny’s Pecan (toasted pecans and gooey filling enveloped in our buttery shortbread crust).

And, as if that isn’t enough, Buttermilk Sky even has a Pie Perks Club through which members are rewarded on their birthdays with a free four-inch pie, among other tasty perks.

F: Place for Live Music

Given the buzz that preceded the arrival of Texas Live! – and, the millions of its visitors who have labeled it “the go to place for a good time in Arlington” since it opened in 2018, it’s no surprise that our readers/voters made the entertainment hub an All Star for the third year in a row.

Here’s why: On practically any given moment of any given day, you can eat/drink/ be merry at the likes of Arlington Backyard, Choctaw Lounge, Guy Fieri’s Taco Joint, Lockhart Smokehouse, Miller Tavern & Beer Garden, PBR Texas, Pudge’s Pizza, Rangers Republic, Sports & Social Arlington, Troy’s and Revolver Brewhouse.

Every week you can take in a live show featuring a favorite artist or band at a number of the aforementioned venues, or you can enjoy the company of friends wearing the same-colored jersey you’re wearing while being thoroughly entertained by the sports on televisions at many of the others.

J. Gilligan’s Bar & Grill

F or more than four decades, J. Gilligan’s Bar & Grill has been one of Arlington’s premier destinations for culinary and social pleasures. So it comes as no surprise that our readers continue to select the unique eatery as an All Star.

The food and service are great, and there’s always a game or several on the televisions scattered inside and out on the patio, so you can cheer for your favorite team alongside friends.

The fabled restaurant is much more than just a sports bar, though. It’s also a great venue for a casual lunch or dinner date, as well as party headquarters for gatherings that include reunions, birthdays, charity functions, political events, holiday parties, youth sports clubs, wedding events, business lunches and meetings and the proverbial “more.”

Bottom line: This is an All Star restaurant.

No Frills Grill & Sports Bar

Aback-to-back All Star, No Frills Grill & Sports Bar is exactly what you want your sports bar to be. The popular eatery offers sports action on wall-to-wall TVs that carry the NFL Sunday Ticket, NBA League Pass, ESPN Game Plan, NHL Center Ice, and MLB Extra Innings to ensure that you won’t miss any of the action.

No Frills Grill is a great place to bring your team after the game because the dining room was designed with large parties in mind. The staff provides a comfortable atmosphere for families with inexpensive kids’ meals and spacious game rooms featuring pool tables and the latest video games.

Then there is one of the more diverse menus you will find. With American Pub food to Tex–Mex and many Seafood entrees, you can always discover something new to eat, from burgers and wings to great chicken sandwiches and light and tasty salads.

El Gabacho Tex-Mex Grill

El Gabacho Tex-Mex Grill offers exquisite cuisine and outstanding service, qualities obviously appreciated by patron/readers, who have voted the restaurant to the All Star team for the fifth consecutive year.

Guests can dine inside or outside on the popular patio – or they can enjoy take-out service or have a lunch or dinner meal catered. In each case, they will enjoy a wide array of delicious Tex-Mex options.

The restaurant also is known throughout the Metroplex for its beverage menu, which includes numerous amounts of hand-crafted margaritas, over 30 tequilas and 13 beers on tap. Then there’s the eclectic decor, marked by a collection of John Wayne memorabilia scattered throughout the eatery.

General Manager David Govea says there’s a reason why guests enjoy their visits to El Gabacho Tex-Mex Grill: “Our personalized service, fresh food and friendly staff help set us apart as special.”

Mac’s Bar & Grill

F: Place for Lunch

For more than three decades, the team at Mac’s Bar & Grill has provided great experiences for Arlington area diners. Once again, that dedication has been honored with the popular restaurant being voted to the Readers’ Choice All Star team.

Food prepared by the culinary team ranges from the familiar to the unexpected with fresh seafood, steaks, prime rib and seasonally created specials. Mac’s proudly offers slow-roasted prime rib, fresh fish selections, and its Signature Mac’s Salad.

One of the keys to the kind of success Mac’s Bar & Grill has long enjoyed is its partnerships with local purveyors and individuals that enable the eatery to feature specials that are seasonal and most often locally sourced from the surrounding area.

The bar features classic cocktails, specialty cocktails, over 25 single malt scotches and an exceptional bourbon list. The wine list features bottles primarily from North and South America, and Mac’s has more than 10 wines available by the glass.

Grounds and Gold Co.

Grounds and Gold serves gourmet coffee, homemade baked goods and made from-scratch dishes. But that’s just part of why this business is a 2022 All Star. G&G was built on the foundation of fostering community through providing a warm atmosphere where family and friends can gather; as well as, providing community outreach through “Heart of Gold” notes and donations to local charities.

Grounds and Gold is rooted in a bakery, Ground Ribbon, that was founded to honor owner Maurice Ahern’s son, Micah Ahern, who died in July 2016 after a six-year battle with cancer. It was long Maurice’s dream to expand the bakery to a brick and mortar, café-style location that would focus on benefiting the community.

Maurice partnered with family members Jenifer and Jimmy Kinley to create Grounds and Gold, and the fruit of that union is an All Star community café that serves Gold Ribbon Confections’ baked goods, great coffee and fresh dishes to appreciative patrons.

The Uncluttered Life ®

First-time All Star The Uncluttered Life® is a professional in-home (as well as online subscriptionbased) organizing company that takes the endeavor to new heights.

The Uncluttered Life® co-founders, Cathy and Danica Orr, are a mother-daughter organizing duo who were on the de-clutter bandwagon long before “Spark Joy” was a household phrase. Cathy is one of only 50 people worldwide to hold a Master Level Certification in Marie Kondo’s KonMari Method® of organization.

When Danica is asked how long she has been organizing, she jokingly replies, “My entire life! When your mom is one of the most organized people on the planet, your training begins at birth.”

Their philosophy focuses on the notion that your home should reflect who you are now, rather than who you used to be, or hope to be someday. People are so much happier when their space functions well, and that’s what they strive to provide for their clients.

Susser Bank

W: Bank

Susser Bank is making its second straight appearance as a Readers’ Choice All Star. That kind of success is born from a number of factors. Here, bank officials share what they think makes the financial institution special:

Don Davis Auto Group

You can certainly say the Don Davis Auto Group is “driven” to success. Since we added the Auto Dealer category to our All Star list eight years ago, the venerable company has found itself in the winners’ circle every single time.

Don Davis Auto Group has served this community for more than four decades, offering quality cars of many makes and models, including Nissan, Ram, Wagoneer, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Ford. The dealership has long been recognized for its commitment to excellent customer service – regardless of the vehicle that buyers drive off of the lot.

In addition to selling new cars, Don Davis Auto Group offers a wide selection of pre-owned vehicles at each location.

To meet the needs of local would-be car buyers, Don Davis Auto Group holds a yearly “Garage Sale” that has been a dealership staple for more than three decades.

As if all that pertains to automobiles weren’t enough to show how special Don Davis Auto Group is, the dealership is also active in the community as a long-time supporter of WFAA Channel 8’s popular Santa’s Helpers Toy Drive.

To give you one final idea why Don Davis Auto Group is the readers’ choice for an automobile dealership, consider the glowing reviews that routinely are submitted by satisfied customers, such as these:

“ I have been a customer with Don Davis for 20 years. And in that time I have been very happy of the quality of your service at all levels of your team. Keep it up for my next visit. ”

“From start to finish, the experience was amazing. I received a great offer for my trade in, and the new cars were priced great. Test drove a car and fell in love with it. The process was quick and easy. I drove off with a brand new Nissan that afternoon. This was car #2. Will definitely be back for car #3.”

At Susser Bank, our reputation is everything. That is because we aim to be known for serving our clients and community with unwavering excellence.

We are committed to exceeding clients’ expectations at every turn – with responsiveness, technology-driven solutions, personalized support, and an intent on growing long-term relationships.

Arlington: Thank you for trusting us with your business. We take extraordinary pride in serving you today and for many generations to come and are honored to be named an All Star in the Bank category.

Frost Bank

F: Bank, Local Bank

In each of the past seven Readers’ Choice polls, Frost has earned our readers’ collective nod as an Arlington Area All Star. That’s not surprising. After all, this is a bank with a rich tradition of exceeding customer expectations, per bank officials:

Texas Trust Credit Union

W (tie): Credit Union

Texas Trust Credit Union clearly has captured the hearts of its members – at least those who are partial to voting in our annual Readers’ Choice poll. This is the seventh consecutive year the company has been selected as an All Star.

Texas Trust’s history in North Texas began in 1948 when Chance Vought Aircraft Corporation moved to Dallas from Connecticut. The credit union opened its first Arlington-based branch in 1990, which was located at Highway 360 and Arkansas and later relocated to Highway 360 and Pioneer (1998). Texas Trust continued to expand with more branches in Arlington: on Little Road and Green Oaks (1999), Bowen and Park Row (2013), Bardin and Matlock (2013), on the UTA campus at Center Street and First (2014) and Northeast Green Oaks and Collins (2019).

In 2012, Texas Trust purchased the two-building Cordovan Office Park located on Interstate 20 between Little Road and Green Oaks and renamed it the Texas Trust Business Park. One of the 37,000-square-foot buildings currently serves as the credit union’s headquarters, while the other serves as investment property.

Texas Trust exists for one simple purpose: To build brighter financial futures. The company is a not-for-profit credit union that focuses on giving back to its members and the community at large.

Texas Trust remains committed to providing service that others brag about and treating its members with personal attention. The Texas Trust team stands ready to help, through an array of outstanding products and services. The credit union is also focused on fulfilling the needs of its Arlington communities – and it shows through Texas Trust’s community service and support of local students.

Greater Texas Credit Union

W (tie): Credit Union

Greater Texas Credit Union is proud and honored to be making its repeat appearance on the readers’ choice All Star team this year!

Greater Texas Credit Union, founded in 1952, is a financial cooperative that emphasizes community stewardship, charitable giving, and employee volunteerism through its Greater Good initiative. Together with its subsidiary, Aggieland Credit Union – which serves the Brazos Valley – the credit union offers a wide variety of consumer-oriented banking services to its 80,000 members across the state of Texas.

Greater Texas has locations in Arlington, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Bryan-College Station, Edinburg, and the Dallas-Ft. Worth market with assets of nearly $1 billion.

supervised local offices for some of the country’s more prestigious law firms before opening his own practice in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Ross’ professional experience led him to partner with famed environmental activist Erin Brockovich and prosecute various environmental cases throughout the country.

In 2007, he left the big firm life to pursue his own practice. With a focus on litigation, Ross decided not to limit his practice to a particular area but to provide a firm that can handle a variety of his clients’ legal matters.

Those clients have responded in-kind and have been the driving force behind the significant growth of the firm.

The Jim Ross Law Group is a general practice litigation firm that handles cases involving personal injury, family law, civil and business litigation, criminal defense and probate matters.

The firm operates on the philosophy that all people deserve representation. “It’s the Texas way and part of the American spirit,” Ross says. “It’s often said that ‘no man is above the law.’ In America, that’s the truth. At our law firm, we represent people from many situations and walks of life.”

Ross says straight talk is the foundation of his practice. “Sometimes this isn’t easy to do, and the news isn’t always good,” he says. “However, we firmly believe that our clients deserve the truth and to have unyielding support from a tough legal team that delivers on its promises.”

Attorneys at Jim Ross Law realize that each case is unique. “We also know that what is right for others may not be right for you,” Ross says. “We will tailor a legal strategy to your needs, combining the legal tools that are right for you.”

Her law firm specializes in wills and trusts (including gun trusts), elder law and guardianships, asset and wealth protection and probate. Licensed as a Texas attorney since 1994, Schroeder has built a reputation as a problem-solver who serves clients’ needs with legal professionalism and a commitment to individualized attention.

“I believe in long-term partnerships and in building relationships in the community I still live in and love,” she says. “I strive to gain my clients’ trust, one case at a time. Stephanie Foster has been named a Readers’ Choice All Star for the fifth consecutive year, thanks to grateful clients who appreciate her compassion and persistence while dealing with one of the more important legal decisions a person can make: divorce.

Foster is a strong litigator who effectively articulates and argues for her clients’ interests in contested divorce cases. But her main priority is finding solutions that are beneficial to the family as a whole. “One option is traditional courtroom litigation. Another option is collaborative divorce,” Foster says. “Although I am prepared to be the warrior in your courtroom battle as I have been in thousands of Tarrant County divorce cases over the past 30 years, my preference is to be the peacemaker in your interest-based negotiations through the dignified, private, child-protecting process known as collaborative divorce, which involves no court.”

Foster believes the collaborative process is a powerful way to generate creative solutions in family law disputes while minimizing financial and emotional damage to families facing divorce.

Viridian

For the fifth consecutive year, the Viridian masterplanned community is being celebrated as a Readers’ Choice All Star.

And with just cause.

Teeming with wildlife, Viridian boasts a 2,000-acre master plan that includes five major lakes, 500 acres of open space and an additional 500 acres of lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands. Homes there are just steps away from a thriving town square with retail, business and medical offices, as well as an assortment of amenities for active lifestyles.

With miles of nature trails connecting to the River Legacy Park and the Living Science Center, Viridian is unlike anywhere else in the Metroplex. To wit ...

“Viridian was the first Audubon International Gold Signature Standard community in Texas,” says Robert Kembel, general manager at Viridian, a project of the Johnson Development Group.

The natural habitat – and all its inhabitants – help make Viridian an open door to fun and relaxation for the entire family. From agriculture programs that provide farm-fresh produce to purchase to excursions to dig for dinosaur “bones” at Fossil Park, there is always something to do – and new amenities are routinely added.

For example, the Viridian Lake Club is an exciting, 6-acre peninsula overlooking Lake Viridian, making it one of the focal points of fun in the community. It features five pools, a pavilion, and a small amphitheater. Some 850 acres of open space and lakes and a 150-acre wooded area to explore make interacting with neighbors and nature the norm. Other features include catchand-release fishing, sailing, bird watching, meeting neighbors for bridge or poker, canoeing on Lake Viridian, letting Rover romp at Arrowhead Park, enjoying a girls’ night out at the Women’s Wine Down, or jogging or cycling along miles of pathways that connect with existing River Legacy trails.

Three years ago, the development welcomed Viridian Elements, a vibrant, active 55+ lifestyle community featuring a state-of-the-art fitness center, demonstration kitchen, and meeting facilities.

Ebby Halliday REALTORS ®

As it closes in on eight decades of stellar real estate service to buyers and sellers of local homes, multi-time All Star Ebby Halliday Realtors® continues to uphold a tradition of service and client commitment that is rooted in a remarkable story – and that is virtually unmatched anywhere.

It all began in 1945, when one bold woman parlayed her wisdom, generosity, business acumen and endurance into what is today the No. 1 residential real estate brokerage in Texas.

“Long life is a privilege not everyone – or every company – gets to enjoy,” says Ebby Halliday Companies President & CEO Chris Kelly. “As we think about what Ebby Halliday has accomplished, we acknowledge this fact with a spirit of gratitude.”

Acquired by HomeServices of America, a Berkshire Hathaway affiliate, in 2018, the widely admired company has implemented a concerted effort to modernize homeownership services and ensure that homeownership is available to everyone buying or selling a home in North Texas.

Since the acquisition, the Ebby Halliday Companies’ expanded leadership team has focused intensely on ensuring its agents and clients benefit from the latest technology and tools. Among the company’s primary business objectives is furthering access to homeownership opportunities for historically marginalized communities.

Today, Ebby Halliday has more than 30 offices covering more than 12,000 square miles of North Texas, East Texas and Oklahoma.

Ebby Halliday’s first Arlington office opened in 1977. Due to growth, the office has moved twice since then to its current location in west Arlington. The Ebby Halliday family further expanded in 2010 when the Mansfield office opened.

And, now, the collective local Ebby Halliday family is taking all the principles of success that made the company founder a household name and taking the company to new heights.

And to yet another All Star nod.

Coy Garrett & Associates

F: Real Estate-Commercial Development

Throughout a brilliant career that has spanned more than a quarter of a century, All Star Coy Garrett has been all about building Arlington – in so many ways.

There is, for example, the $250 million General Motors Arlington Automotive Logistics Center by NorthPoint Development. He drove the deal that got that done, rallying principals from the various entities needed to convert a run-down property that once housed Six Flags Mall into one of the bigger job generators and money makers for his hometown. As a result, he became the first commercial real estate broker from Arlington to receive the prestigious William C. Jennings Award by the Texas Association of Realtors in the 68-year history of the organization.

Likewise, it was Garrett & Associates that spearheaded the city’s Hypermart commercial project and additional residential areas on South Cooper Street – and the WalMart project at Little Road, Highway 287 and I-20. He also helped conceive and was involved in the initial processes of the Baird Farm property in North Arlington that spurred expansion of the northeast portion of the city from Collins Street to Highway 360. And he developed the land located at Sublett Road and Matlock Road for commercial and residential use.

Though his company’s roots date to 1983, his trip to the top started before, first as an aeronautical engineer for LTV designing fighter jets, then as a part-time real estate professional who decided he liked the great outdoors so much that he would start a company that would ultimately define that very space in the city he loves.

That, you might say, is what an All Star is all about.

Athree-time All Star that has served the Arlington-area community for more than half a century, Green’s Produce & Plants is a farmers market and garden center that provides highquality produce, plants, garden decor, and vintage treasures to customers who visit from all over the Metroplex and beyond.

In the beginning, Owner Tom Baron arrived at market in the wee hours of morning to be the first to make his selection of produce from the farmers’ stalls. He traveled to local farms to get the freshest black-eyed peas, the best tasting tomatoes, or juiciest peaches. Then it was on to the greenhouses to hand pick the best geraniums, ferns, and mums.

Over the past 51 years Green’s has grown quite a bit. Tom has left the market trips in the capable hands of his grandson, Bruce White. The plants are now picked by Green’s knowledgeable operations manager Patti White, Tom’s daughter. After a tentative try at retirement Tom now helps out when needed at Green’s Produce & Plants.

The produce at Green’s follows the seasons, so the stock changes from week to week and month to month. The company also offers a huge selection of annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables and much more, including Texas natives and foreign wonders, for shade, sun or somewhere in between. Green’s sells fully matured plants, as well as starter plants and seeds and has a large selection of droughttolerant natives and plants adapted to the Dallas / Fort Worth area of North Texas.

Then, to complement the plants, Green’s offers all manner of pots, garden decor and vintage treasures for display indoors and in the garden.

Green’s also sells grab-and-go selections of items made in-house, such as jams, jellies, tamales, salsa and precut foods such as watermelon, cantaloupes, cucumber salad, cole slaw and fruit crisp.

Bond Cleaners

W (tie): Dry Cleaner

Multiple-time

All Star Bond Cleaners has always been a family owned and operated business, serving Arlington-area customers for the past 53 years.

In 1969 Jim and Linda Bond opened up the first Bond Cleaners to provide fast, quality dry cleaning and laundry services to Arlington’s citizens. More than five decades later, the business has grown modestly and humbly with the support of its “extended family” of customers and employees.

There are now three generations of the Bond family working with the business, each priding themselves on outstanding customer service and quality work. Notably, Bond Cleaners has had the same core team of employees for more than 30 years, now using one of the most eco-friendly cleaning processes that are safe for both humans and the environment.

“We want to say thank you to all our customers,” says Jim, “whether you have been doing business with us one year or 50 years.”

Comet Cleaners

W (tie): Dry Cleaner

There is one thing you can count on when we have a Readers’ Choice All Star team: Comet Cleaners will be part of it. The popular establishment has won every year since we added Dry Cleaner to the list of categories some seven years ago. Comet Cleaners has locations all over the country – and, even, outside it. Locally, you can easily find a Comet Cleaners near you. And, if you look in the history files, you’ll also find that the precursor to Comet Cleaners started in Arlington in 1924. The original business began after R.L. “Jack” Godfrey left home in 1920 to go work in a tailor’s shop and then decided to open his own dry cleaning company four years later.

Now, nearly a century later, Comet Cleaners operates more than 160 locations internationally, and the ones in our area consistently live up to the legacy of service and quality Godfrey established during the company’s genesis.

Farrell Animal Hospital

Perennial All Star Farrell Animal Hospital is founded on a simple, yet successful, philosophy: You and your pets are like family.

From the very first symptom through diagnosis and treatment, Farrell Animal Hospital provides a full range of services for your pet. Over the years, the animal hospital has earned a reputation for excellence.

“We make it a priority to keep pace with advances in veterinary medicine,” Turner says, “and we are proud to be one of the few hospitals in Tarrant County accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association.”

F: Pet Training

An All Star for the sixth time, Pet Resort in the Gardens continues to be a local success story for owners Mary and Dr. Jim Turner.

“I was born in Arlington. Jim moved here when he was less than a year old, so doing business here is personal,” Mary says.

“Our customers are our neighbors, friends and family whom we never want to disappoint. We take very seriously the care entrusted to us of pets who are so much more than just pets; they are family.”

The Turners opened Pet Resort in 2010. “We shared the dream of improving the way pet boarding was historically handled, and Pet Resort in the Gardens is that dream come true,” Mary says. With comfortable lofts and suites, indoor/outdoor play yards, obedience training and premium bathing and spa services, Pet Resort in the Gardens is a pet owner’s dream come true.

Three Dog Bakery

Three Dog Bakery’s trip to the All Star winners’ circle started in 1989, then three dogs, two guys and one $0.59 biscuit cutter created the world’s first bakery for dogs. This revolutionary idea – 100% natural, wholesome, human-quality ingredients – gave pet owners a new option in healthy feeding. Just like the Arlington location owned by Kim Harmon, the original Three Dog Bakery store was an inviting and exciting place for pets and the people that treasure them. Customers still enjoy the pleasant aroma of fresh-baked pastries, treats and food for dogs in a comfortable setting.

“We specialize in all-natural, fresh-baked dog treats and personalized celebration cakes, as well as premium dog food, toys, collars, and accessories,” Harmon says. “My inspiration for starting this journey are my pups: Max, Cash, Tinkerbell, Beltre, Lily, Papi Violet and Chuck. We’ve been making tails wag since 1989, and today our mission remains the same – feed the souls of dogs and the people that love them.”

Dr. Moody Alexander

W: Orthodontist

Dr.

Moody Alexander, the sole provider at Drs Alexander Orthodontics, is making his eighth straight appearance on the All Star team.

Over the past five and a half decades-plus, Drs Alexander Orthodontics has focused on providing orthodontic treatment for children and adults, many of whom have become like family to Dr. Alexander and his staff. Although Dr. Wick Alexander, fonder of the practice in 1964, passed away recently, his legacy continues through Dr. Moody and the thousands of smiles he helped create.

“We work hard to provide a 5-star service experience for our patients, from their initial phone call to the ‘getting braces off’ celebration,” Dr. Alexander says. “We understand that the orthodontic journey is so much more than just straightening teeth. We count it a privilege to get to know our patients and their families and strive to be the best part of our patients’ day.”

Another thing that sets the practice apart is its yearning to “give back.”

“We realize the incredible blessings that we have in our lives and try to live by the passage from Luke that says ‘to whom much is given, much is required,’” Dr. Alexander says. “That’s why we developed our wooden nickel program. Twice a year, we provide an opportunity for patients to be involved with a humanitarian project by donating wooden nickels they earned by being good patients.”

Drs Alexander Orthodontics also partners with like-minded organizations in town, such as Young Life, Arlington Southwest Little League, Gospel City Church, Pantego Christian Academy, Alliance for Children, Mission Arlington, and Dental Health Arlington.

Dr. William Nesbitt Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia

Dr. William Nesbitt, whose new Texas Cardiac Arrythmia office opened last year, is our 2022 Readers’ Choice All Star in the Cardio Surgeon category.

D1986 when she completed her residency in Kansas City, Kansas, and moved to Arlington to become the first female Ob-Gyn in the city. Her practice now has six other women physicians serving women patients: Dr. Jessica Brown, Dr. Dawnette Pepper, Dr. Kiran Nangrani, Dr. Sheri Puffer, Dr. Joy Carter and Dr. Maya Kuriakose.

WHS has two locations in Arlington. The North office is located adjacent to Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital, where the group does all deliveries and inpatient surgeries. The South office is at Cooper and Wimbledon, just south of I-20.

Women’s Health Services has been a steady provider of women’s healthcare for more than three decades. Patients can count on Dr. Bergstrom and her colleagues to be accessible for any female issues from puberty through menopause.

The doctors of WHS provide services for pregnancy, birth control, heavy periods, treatment for uterine prolapse and urinary incontinence, menopausal hormonal changes and well woman exams.

The group performs all their in-patient hospital services at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital, Arlington’s Community Hospital, which promotes the highest standard of health care for all patients in the Metroplex. Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital finished a complete renovation of the Women’s Services facility three years ago.

Women’s Health Services offers full obstetrical and gynecological services. The team’s philosophy is to promote a comfortable atmosphere with expert services in all aspects of female health. The practice has an electronic appointment booking system that has an easy-access app.

The acclaimed cardiac electrophysiologist says the new facility – and all it entails – offers patients a state-of-the-art medical option. Because it is located next to Texas Health Heart and Vascular Hospital and Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital in North Arlington, patients have access to an electrophysiology group that can offer a wide array of treatment options and access to local patients searching for compassionate, practical and effective solutions to cardiac issues.

“Both Medical City Arlington and Texas Health Heart and Vascular Hospital have the latest mapping systems, techniques and other services to provide the latest advances in cardiac electrophysiology,” he says.

Dr. Nesbitt says that while evolving technology is exciting and important, a caring team of health providers is always at the “heart” of the most successful cardiac care. Consequently, he tries to “walk the walk” as he tends to each patient.

“I strive every day to provide the best possible treatment options with a focus on successful outcomes while always keeping patient safety at the forefront of my mind,” he says. “In addition, it is vitally important to me to ensure my patients understand their heart condition completely and know all the available options. We are in this together.”

“There’s one thing I try never to forget,” he continues. “And that is that diagnosing and treating patients with electrical disorders of the heart is a privilege. It is a privilege to do what I do.”

Long a favorite of our readers, The Sanford House (and its various entities) have been chosen to the Readers’ Choice All Star team for the ninth time. This year The Sanford House is an All Star in eight categories.

General Manager Valerie Landry proudly notes that the family-owned-and-operated Inn has been a staple in Arlington for more two and a half decades. “When we originally opened in 1997, my grandparents lived on property and ran the business as a true bed and breakfast,” she says. “As the business developed, my grandparents eventually decided to retire, and my Mom, Dr. Joan Bergstrom, ran the business with various managers at the helm.”

Since Landry came on board in 2008, she has worked with her mom to create “House Hosted” events and develop a more strategic management plan. “We continually put a lot of effort into the quality of products and services we provide,” Landry says.

When the pandemic prompted temporary closures of the restaurant and salon/spa in 2020, Landry used the time as an opportunity to completely re-brand the Inn, Spa, and Restaurant506, remodel the Grand Courtyard, repaint the exterior of the Inn, and upgrade fixtures and features throughout the property.

Now celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2022, they opted to celebrate by performing 25 acts of kindness for the Greater Arlington community throughout the year.

With Arlington’s long-term vision of a bustling and walkable downtown finally reaching fruition, The Sanford House is in a perfect location for visitors wanting to settle into the heart of the Metroplex and experience Arlington, as well as for locals seeking a change of scenery for a relaxing staycation.

Landry says the company’s professional philosophy is to provide tremendous, sincere hospitality to everyone. “The Sanford House is most special because of the unparalleled service we provide,” Landry says. “Our vision is to lift up all of our guests so they feel nourished, accepted, and celebrated.”

Amulti-time All Star, Sheraton Arlington Hotel is centrally located on Convention Center Drive adjacent to the Esports Stadium Arlington + Expo Center, making it a favorite of both event attendees and locals looking for a perfect close-tohome respite as part of their staycation.

Sheraton Arlington Hotel guests enjoy an array of amenities, including spacious, modern hotel suites with natural light and plush bedding. They can fuel up for their day with Starbucks® coffee at The Market Place and wind down with a casual dinner at Sheraton’s on-site restaurant, Parkside Bar & Grille. Show Me the Monet Gallery of Fine Art

ShowMe the Monet Gallery of Fine Art, located in Gracie Lane, is making its debut on our All Star team. Per owner Pepper Crary, it’s “a place for local artists to show/sell their work, to host workshops and to hang out together and share our ideas with one another.”

Of course, for Crary, it is even more than that. “The Gallery is affectionately called my ‘Toy Box,’” she says. “It’s a Gallery filled with everything I love, most importantly the people that come through the Gallery. It brightens my day when my customers share their decorating ideas and seek ideas for their homes.”

The Gallery carries many high-end boutique gift items, for many occasions. And one of its better draws is the fact that it is a place for local artists to engage with other local artists. Another highlight: Crary offers workshops taught by Show Me the Monet artists.

Great Skin Spa & Facial Club

Great Skin Spa & Facial Club is a nine-time winner of Best Skin Care in Arlington.

Owner Brenda Cureton Hunt was the first U.S. franchisee of Canadian-based Face cosmetics, and at Great Skin, she not only shares her experience in creating and maintaining beautiful skin via state-ofthe-industry technology and products; she also has championed the practice of receiving professional spa services as part of personal care, as opposed to a special occasional visit or gift due to affordability.

Great Skin Facial Club members receive a wide range of treatment options at the spa, as well as guidance and products they can use at home.

“I developed the concept of Great Skin based on the goals of the thousands of clients – men and women – wanting to have more beautiful skin and manage the signs of aging skin through treatments, knowledge and skin care,” Cureton Hunt says.

Great Skin offers skin care products for antiaging, acne, hyperpigmentation and general skin care, as well as skin and body care for men, women and teens, and waxing, teeth whitening and massage. Services also include microneedling, non-needle lip plumping and enhancement, non-surgical Brazilian Butt Lifting and contouring, cellulite and fat melting treatments, along with body contouring, foot detoxing and an extensive line of skin and body care products.

“We now also offer a line of natural supplements for weight loss, detox, digestion and cbd products to reduce body pain and help relaxation,” Cureton Hunt say. “We also offer Colombian Fajas to contour and shape the body while you sleep or to wear under your clothes to shape, slim and contour, as well as Great Skin signature candles and men’s and ladies’ Terry shower wraps to enjoy that spa feel at home. In spite of where we are in our world right now, we keep our quality exceptionally high in every area.”

River Legacy Park & Living Science Center

W: Local Park, Place for a Kids Party, Place to Volunteer F: Outdoor Festival

There’s a strong, notable, bond between Arlington area residents and River Legacy Parks – this is the ninth time the natural city treasure has been named an All Star. Of course, who could argue against something that offers the beauty of the wilderness with open spaces for your favorite pastime – pretty much whatever that favorite pastime might be?

From botany to bicycling or rollerblading to strolls through the woods, this 1,300-acre public park has something for everyone. The park’s ecological diversity of bottomland forest, wetlands and prairie provides abundant habitat for countless wildlife and native plants. And then there are amenities, such as trails, picnic areas, river overlooks, canoe launches and more.

Texas Rangers Golf Club

This three-time All Star is unique. Arlington Golf and the Texas Rangers partnered to build the world’s only Major League Baseball-branded golf course — the Texas Rangers Golf Club — which opened in February 2019.

The branding partnership, along with $24 million in renovations of what was formerly Chester W. Ditto Golf Course, affords the opportunity for the city to offer a destination golf course for both Arlington residents and visitors alike.

The club’s 23-acre practice area includes a double-ended range, a practice hole and two shortgame areas – one with four greens and the other with one.

The fairways are broad and playable, and the greens are large and golfer friendly. The overall scale of the course is “Texas Big,” and the 111,000 square feet of sand bunkers frame each hole nicely.

Levitt Pavilion

W: Pain Management

Pretty much every year the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Arlington finds a spot on our All Star team. And, why not?

˜˜It provides more than 50 free concerts a year with a broad-based concert calendar of original music by professional musical artists from world music to jazz and country to Indie artists.

The Levitt Pavilion’s concerts provide our community with an accessible, safe gathering place for free music and performing arts open to everyone – all ages, ethnicities, neighborhoods and income levels, especially those who could not afford to enjoy and benefit from live music and the performing arts in any other way.

To further enhance our entertainment pleasure, the Levitt recently added a new hospitality center and permanent restrooms, which should make the concerts – and other events the center will attract in the future – even more enticing.

AN EVENTFUL YEAR FOR AN ANNIVERSARY GIFT

It was 1954. Marilyn Monroe marries Joe DiMaggio, Elvis releases his first single, “That’s All Right,” “From Here to Eternity” dominates the Academy Awards, the words “under God” are added to the Pledge of Allegiance, the Supreme Court rules that segregated schools are unconstitutional, Willie Mays makes “The Catch” in game one of the World Series, and the Buick Motor Company produces its second and final year of the imaginative Skylark.

Arlington classic car collector Mike Ames’ wife, Joy, identified the car that Buick offered only as a convertible as her favorite from the era – especially in Ocean Mist Green – so he presented

our anniversary dinner and had it on the driveway as a surprise gift that we drove to our celebration that evening.

“With controversial styling and pricing that rivaled Cadillac, Buick dealers sold only 836 Skylarks in 1954, and the model was discontinued at the end of the year. Joy always thought it was exceptional.”

Buick had introduced the first Skylark as its 1953 model celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary – a noteworthy point in automotive history considering that Buick was General Motors’ first brand. It proved to be the most successful among all of GM’s top-of-the line vehicles that year, selling 1,690 units at

a list price higher than the Cadillac. Inspired by the famous GM Motorama experimental cars that toured the country in the ‘50s, Chief of GM Design, Harley Earl, insisted on completely redesigning the ’54 Skylark.

“Production was hard to justify” but, as Mike explains, “Harley had extraordinary power because his styling successes helped GM control 60% of the total U.S. car market.”

Built on a different platform and with no interchangeable body or chassis parts, it was completely changed from the ’53 Skylark.

“Styling features exclusive to the ’54 version included large, swept back wheel openings, chrome plated true wire wheels, and a dramatically sculptured rear deck flanked by rounded rear fenders with large, chrome taillight housings.”

And something all Buick enthusiasts would immediately notice: The trademark front fender portholes weren’t there – another feature that makes the Skylark a one-of-a-kind among the brand’s long history.

Notably, the hood ornament was unique, and adopted the following year across the entire Buick lineup. Buick would go on to build a total of 444,609 cars in 1954, but only those 836 mentioned earlier were Skylarks – 1.88% of the company’s total production and, again, selling for more than a new Cadillac convertible.

The interior presented an upholstery “waffle iron” pattern –

highly visible when the top is down which was most of the time. After all, buyers who wanted a convertible did so because they enjoyed cruising around in the open air.

Under the hood is a big 322 CID Fireball V8 200 horsepower engine supported by a 122-inch wheelbase spanning the car’s total length of 207 inches and weighing 4,260 pounds.

The rare ’54 Skylarks are highly collectible, and bring prices today well into six figures. However, Joy has made it clear, “this one is not for sale.”

Mike concludes: “With 58,715 original miles, fully restored and driving perfectly, it is a beautiful, dramatic design that always attracts a crowd. Regardless of all of that, you don’t sell anniversary gifts, so this member of my classic car collection is permanent.”

GIVE HIM SOME SPACE

Aspace physicist at The University of Texas at Arlington will play a key role in NASA’s Geospace Dynamics Constellation (GDC) mission.

GDC is a coordinated group of satellites that will provide the first direct global measurements of the region of space enveloping earth known as the ionosphere and thermosphere (I-T) region, according to a NASA press release.

Rick Wilder, assistant professor of physics, will be the lead scientist for an instrument known as the Atmospheric Electrodynamics probe for THERmal plasma (AETHER). AETHER will measure electron density and temperature, allowing researchers to describe the complex nature and structure of the ionosphere. The team’s goal is to understand phenomena that contribute to space weather and its

effects on human activity.

When solar flares collide with earth’s atmosphere, the exchange of energy can disrupt satellite operations, communication signals and electrical grids. Changes in the density of the ionosphere can interrupt global positioning systems, which affect navigation for a variety of vehicles.

“Transcontinental communications and satellite signals rely on stable conditions within the earth’s upper atmosphere,” Wilder says.

“Understanding the I-T region’s variability and potential for disturbances will allow scientists to develop methods to mitigate negative effects on human activities.”

The investigation team is led by Laila Andersson, principal investigator and a space plasma researcher at the Laboratory for

Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado. Wilder will work directly with Andersson to define the investigation’s science objectives and oversee the team’s publications to report its findings. Under Wilder’s supervision, a UT Arlington graduate student will assist with data analysis for the investigation.

Wilder is the second UT Arlington faculty member to participate in GDC. NASA named Yue Deng, UT Arlington distinguished professor of physics, as one of the mission’s interdisciplinary scientists. Deng’s team will support GDC with state-of-the-art physical models and ground-based operations, which are important for successful launch, operations and closure of the mission.

ARE GREAT DAYS IN ARLINGTON IN THE OFFING THIS SEASON?

Former Mayor Jeff Williams started almost every speech he ever gave with a joyous refrain, “It’s a great day in Arlington.” Most often he was right. But some days are greater than others. Logic suggests that if there are great days and greater days there must also be greatest days. For me the greatest days have been those that included significant sporting events.

Like October 22, 2010 – the night the Rangers first qualified for the World Series. They beat the Yankees and punched their ticket to the fall classic. Spoiler alert, that was #1 on most lists of the top 50 moments in the first 50 years of Texas Rangers baseball.

Unfortunately, the Cowboys have not given us that moment yet. Not since they moved to Arlington anyway. It was Winston Churchill who said, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Not quite as upbeat as Mayor Williams’ line, but easily as profound.

two decades of success instead of being doomed to repeat the past two and a half decades of frustration?

Here’s the thing: Building a Championship team is an art, not a science, so we can’t just follow the instruction manual and put it all together.

The key word from Churchill’s quote may be “learn.” What did we learn from the ‘90s Cowboys? Among other things we learned that a set of triplets is good. Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith were the heart and soul of those teams.

If the current version of triplets – Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliot and CeeDee Lamb – can take it to the next level, these Cowboys have a chance to look like those ‘90s teams. The ‘70s teams were powered by a legendary defense known as “Doomsday.” With Dan Quinn at the helm, Micah Parsons in the middle and Trevon Diggs picking passes, maybe this is a “Doomsday” starter kit.

This business of repeating history can be complicated. After all, in some cases you want a repeat of history, in others you don’t. Who among us would not take a repeat of the ‘90s? Or the ‘70s. America’s Team played in five Super Bowls in the ‘70s, winning two of them. The Cowboys were three for three in the ‘90s.

Five of the eight Super Bowl runs included playing at home in the NFC Championship Game. This is where Arlington and AT&T Stadium come in. As a guy who covered all of those ‘90s Cowboys teams, I contend that the most exciting games of the year were those Conference Championship games. On that Sunday it is all or nothing, do or die. And, unlike the Super Bowl, that game will always be played in front of one team’s home fans.

So the next “greatest day” in Arlington could be the Cowboys playing in a conference title game for the first time since 1995 and for the first time ever in Arlington. But how do we get there? How do we find a way to repeat those

The atmosphere around AT&T Stadium on game day is always awesome. When I walk from my parking spot to the press box I see so many people who are so glad to be there. For many you can tell that they have been waiting a long time just for the opportunity to see the best stadium in the NFL, to see their favorite team. There is always passion, excitement and undying support for a team that these fans love.

Now picture that crowd when there is something on the line. Picture that crowd when the winner goes to the Super Bowl and the loser goes home. That is a day we would all like to see. That is a day that would prove the Cowboys have learned from their history.

That is a day that would be among the greatest days in Arlington.

If Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott can replicate this pose on a regular basis, local fans could be in for a special season.
