Give Your Brain Exactly What it Needs to Hear!
Hearing Loss
Normal Hearing
It’s your brain that hears - not your ears. If you’re like most people, you’re used to thinking of hearing as something that happens in your ears. What people often don’t think about is what happens between their ears - in the hearing part of the brain. That’s where sound becomes information that has meaning. Your brain works hard to make that happen. When the sound signals from your ears are compromised, your brain has to work even harder to fill in the gaps.

Esports is not just a game, it’s big industry
I
n 2017, The University of Texas at Arlington demonstrated its dominance in a growing
sport that is estimated to become a $100 billion industry by 2020. That’s when UTA’s team won the Heroes of the Dorm esports competition, gaining international acclaim as a top university in this new, digital sports field.
Today, the University is a national leader in esports and has a growing team roster and fan base, along with its own practice room at the new Esports Stadium Arlington (ESA). Freshman Evan Anderson is the team’s competitive director for the game Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). “Players are able to learn how to operate as a team,” he says. “Having our own room in the new stadium is fantastic. Not everyone has access to equipment like that, so when we practice there, we know we are getting the best performance.” UTA Esports and EsportsLSU played an exhibition game during ESA’s inaugural event in November 2018, the CS:GO global professional championship. “Global” and “professional” are apt words for the sports, which offer a number of career opportunities for gamers and gaming fans. UTA is meeting the needs of this burgeoning industry by offering both credit and noncredit esports certifications that focus on gaming creation, innovation, and business.
n
n
Esports Stadium Arlington is the largest dedicated esports facility in North America
The undergraduate certificate allows students to choose up to 12 credit hours in video game-focused communications, music industry technology, graphic design, and digital imaging. There are even courses on the economics of video games and the sociology of sports. “Students who love gaming are thinking about a career in esports,” says Sonja Watson, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts who oversees the program. “The esports certificate brings together various fields to provide a comprehensive understanding of esports and the online gaming industry.” The esports management certification, offered through UTA’s Division for Enterprise Development, is a noncredit program that covers business, management, and marketing aspects of the growing industry.

Three special people to whom I will always be grateful hen I ran into my friend Daniel not long ago, we embraced, as is our custom. He said I was looking good, and then we played a little catch-up. He said his bum knee was feeling better, thanks to some acupuncture treatment, but he suspected it wouldn’t feel great again until he undergoes some reconstructive surgery. As fellow graduates of Baylor University, we felt compelled to share memories of our times in Waco, which we did. Then we both said to give our best to the respective families and parted ways. Even if we never really part ways. I met Maureen but once. You wouldn’t have suspected that, given that encounter. It came during an intermission of a high school dance team program, where my daughter Hannah was performing, along with Maureen’s daughter, who was a member of another school’s squad. “Dad,” Hannah whispered in my ear, “that’s Maureen.” Yale Youngblood Upon hearing those three words, I immediately pushed my way through a throng of parents and Editor well-wishers sipping on soft drinks and small talking with various members of the various troupes, and I gently touched Maureen on the shoulder. She turned. I told her who I was. We embraced. Our lone conversation lasted maybe five minutes, then we parted ways. Even if we never really part ways. Rosa happened to be at the hospital one day, when I was visiting an ill friend. When my eyes met hers, both sets of eyes grew wide. Whatever expressions had been on our faces turned into radiant smiles. And we embraced – I favor embraces, it would seem. Rosa told me she had gotten a promotion and that she loved her new work, which wasn’t much different from her old work, just better compensated. I told her how happy I was that we could have this chance meeting, which was cut short, as her new job was calling. Then we parted ways. Even if we never really part ways. Here’s the rest of the story: My first encounters with Daniel, Maureen and Rosa occurred at the same time (August of 2006), at the same place (a local hospital). I was a patient playing dodge ball with death. Daniel was a surgeon determined to help me win. Maureen was a nurse in the ICU ward who tirelessly cared for me during my 12-day, medically induced coma. Rosa was a nurses aide who literally walked me through the first three days of recovery. Their collective answering of a calling gave me a chance to beat long odds. Because I did just that, the lot of us never really part ways. In this issue, we salute health care providers with a section that begins on page 26. I would urge you to get to know these people, because they are special. Embraceably so, I would say.
This month, we introduce a new column, “Hot Spots,” in which Sara Pintilie shares a millennial’s perspective on the area. See page 74.

Actor Kit Hussey will be featured at the next AOT MANY, MANY THINGS CAN – and do – go wrong with an on-stage live theatrical production, but the result can sometimes be great. Or at least entertaining. Or maybe, on occasion, calamitous. No one knows more about this than the speaker for February’s Arlington on Tap, Arlington actor on stage, in movies and on TV, also screen play author, also an occasional director – Kit Hussey. “Whether you have thespian ambitions or simply like the theater, you’ll enjoy Hussey talking about his myriad experiences on stage, some of which did not go exactly by the script,” says O.K. Carter, director for popular Arlington on Tap, the popular happy hour with a talk series, all at downtown bars and bistros.
The place: J. Gilligan’s Bar and Grill (400 E Abram St.). This month’s Arlington on Tap session will take place in the saloon (of course). The time: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 12 (a Tuesday). “Hussey has been on many stages in live theater as well as numerous TV, documentary and movie roles, playing everybody from dentist-turned-gunfighter Doc Holiday (he wrote and played in ‘Outride the Devil: A Morning with Doc Holliday’) to President ‘Silent’ Calvin Coolidge in Larry King’s ‘The Dead Presidents Club,’” says Carter. “You’ll also recognize him from the movie ‘The Beat Hotel.’ His experiences have been unique, and this will be his first sort of tell-all. He might also drop into a character or two from time to time. He’s not a predictable type.” Hussey’s topic: Life on Stage. Hitting Your Marks. Or not. Sponsors of Arlington on Tap include the Arlington Historical Society, Downtown Arlington Management and Arlington Proud, with media sponsorship of Arlington Today magazine.
Mansfield names Ross Fire Chief THE CITY OF MANSFIELD recently appointed Mike Ross to the position of Fire Chief. Ross, who was formerly assistant fire chief and the interim fire chief, has served the Mansfield Fire Department for nearly two decades. “It is gratifying to maintain consistency and stability in a department while also finding the right person for the job,” says Mansfield City Manager Clayton Chandler. “Mike Ross has almost 20 years with the Mansfield Fire Rescue and has served in critical leadership roles since 2009. He has an exemplary record and received strong recommendations from former Fire Chief Barry Bondurant and other members of the command staff. He is the right person to lead a growing fire department into the future.” Former Fire Chief Barry Bondurant retired last month after 35 years of service. Ross has served as the assistant chief over operations since 2013. 14

This is Teddie. Or Teddie Pitter Patter of Terror, as my husband calls her. Toes are in her diet. She is a four-month-old, four-pound terrier mix. We moved to Arlington from North Idaho in September, and our last dog died suddenly the day we moved here! After a period of grief, my husband told me he thought we needed a very special dog and he had seen a terrier mix with only one eye. It was instant love. She is still fast enough to catch lizards and little snakes, as well as giving squirrels a run for their money. She has brought so much joy to our lives. – Annie Vrooman

from being my best, most confident self. My hearing loss happened gradually making it difficult to realize that poor hearing was the source of my frustration. Things like not understanding my office staff or not hearing my wife like I used to were taking its toll on me and my relationships. When my audiologist showed me the difference amplification made, I immediately felt back in control of my life and knew that wearing hearing aids was not optional for me!” Get evaluated today and find out how your quality of life can be improved!

RNV Holdings, LLC, has broken ground on a Children’s Lighthouse Learning Center in Viridian, the first in the Arlington master-planned community. The facility, on a 2.16-acre site at 4000 Cascade Sky Drive, started construction in December and is expected to open by August, says Varun Sharma, owner of 3RNV Holdings. Danny Quinlan with Dan Quinlan and Co. represented Sharma in the land purchase, and Jennifer Johnson with Johnson Development represented Viridian. Children’s Lighthouse Viridian will be able to accommodate more than 200 children ranging in age from infants to school-age. The 11,000+-square-foot building will anchor outdoor spaces and large play areas. Because of the size of the property, Sharma says he may install a soccer field or basketball court. “Usually only 1.5 acres is required, so with our excess land, we will be able to offer our parents more,” he says. Sharma says he chose Viridian because he was looking for a community partner rooted in family values. “Our desire is to contribute to the community in a meaningful way,” he says. “We wanted a community that values family and education and whose residents will appreciate the type of high quality education and service we will offer.” Staff at Children’s Lighthouse follow the Lighthouse C.A.R.E.S. curriculum, an age-appropriate, comprehensive learning approach that incorporates character values such as integrity, fairness and honesty. Robert Kembel, general manager of Viridian, says having an on-site preschool will be a welcome convenience for residents. “With Viridian Elementary already in the community and soon Children’s Lighthouse, parents of young children will have first-rate educational opportunities available right at their front door,” he said. “It’s an important milestone for Viridian.”

UTA’s Flight 12 Improv troupe is soaring in popularity these days • By Kenneth Perkins

projects. The collaboration space also serves as a cafeteria area where the young learners sit down together for a family-style lunch and learn to portion their own food. District administration said the school is perfectly designed for inquiring young minds. Everything in the school is strategically placed to teach children how to master a different educational and socialemotional skill. “There’s not a single activity, there’s not a single drawing on the wall, there’s not a single item that’s not very intentional,” said Holly Teague, special projects administrator. “Everything has a purpose, and Mansfield ISD worked very closely with the designers and architects to make that happen because a place like this has never been built before.”
Students can learn to build and collaboratively work together in the academy’s Polar experience.
MISD pre-kindergarteners attend the academy for a half day in morning and afternoon sessions. Each experience has a capacity of 18 students and is equipped with a certified teacher and an instructional aide. Currently, pre-kindergarten programs from 11 MISD campuses are housed at the Jandrucko Academy for Early Learners. However, the district will provide access to the facility for all MISD pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students through off-site learning visits during the school year and summer. Staff members believe the academy will be a transformational school that will serve as a model for other organizations.
Traveling to outer space just got easier thanks to the interactive space shuttle in the Space experience.
“The Academy for Early Learners is not only innovative and creative, but it is going to become a flagship facility for what early childhood education can eventually be within our state and within our country,” said Kristi Cobb, director of early literacy. The facility officially opened to students in January 2019. A dedication ceremony was held Jan. 26. For more information about the Dr. Sarah K. Audiology
Audiology Experts: They Understand the Importance of Hearing Health and Audiology Care
Dr. Kristin Robbins and Dr. Lisa B. Fell of Audiology Experts
A
udiology Experts is an independent audiology care practice that addresses each patient’s specific hearing needs through experienced care providers, state-of-the-industry technology and a heart for patients. Practice founders Dr. Kristin Robbins and Dr. Lisa B. Fell have dedicated more than a decade at Audiology Experts to ensuring that individuals experiencing signs of hearing loss become aware of audiology care. “To understand the importance of independent audiology care, one must understand the role an audiologist plays in overall hearing care,” Dr. Fell says. “Audiologists provide patient-focused, long-term comprehensive hearing care that is vital to managing hearing loss and/or protecting one’s hearing.” Signs of Hearing Loss? Do you have trouble hearing high pitched sounds? Are you turning the volume up on your television louder than usual? There are quite a few signs of hearing loss to look out for, and while there are online hearing tests to help you find out if you’re experiencing hearing loss, Dr. Robbins notes that those tests are no substitutes for a comprehensive hearing (audiological) evaluation. “There are various types of hearing loss that can only be detected by the evaluation skills and equipment provided by an audiologist,” she says. “An accurate hearing loss diagnosis can be made and appropriate treatment options can be recommended and implemented by an audiologist. When the need for better hearing
arises, seeking audiology care is the first step toward determining your type and degree of hearing loss. Skipping this important step can potentially result in money lost on devices not suited for your hearing needs, as well as continued loss of sounds you’ve been missing.” Dr. Fell says that if you believe you’re experiencing signs of hearing loss, don’t wait: “The sooner we are able to diagnose your type of hearing loss, the sooner we can begin treatment and help you hear life again!” The team at Audiology Experts has witnessed how hearing care helps people be happier, more active, and more connected to friends and family. A growing body of research indicates a strong link between hearing loss and the onset of dementia. Even when people are enjoying life with full hearing, there are many other factors contributing to dementia in seniors such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Researchers are now exploring if earlier hearing care and its cognitive benefits may slow the onset of dementia. Generally speaking, age-related hearing loss starts slowly. Adults in their 40s and 50s often dismiss the early signs, especially when family members help them cope with their hearing loss symptoms. From the time people start noticing they have a hearing problem, data shows on average they don’t seek treatment for 7 to 10 years. “At Audiology Experts we believe treating hearing loss sooner increases quality of life,” Dr. Fell says. “If hearing treatment and audiology care are proven to delay the onset of dementia, that would be welcome news!”

Audiology
Kos/Danchak Audiology & Hearing Aids: North Texas’ Trusted Provider for Better Hearing Since 1984! WHY is hearing health care so important? Our hearing is closely connected to the health of our brain. Although hearing loss is more prevalent as we age, many studies have shown a direct link between hearing loss and depression, mental fatigue and reduced cognitive capacity. Those are just a few reasons why hearing health care is so important! 48 Million...Americans have significant hearing loss. 1 in 3...people experience hearing loss by age 65. While early detection may not prevent hearing loss, it can help reduce the effects! WHEN was your last hearing test? For many, their last hearing test was a long, long time ago! Unlike a toothache or chronic back pain, hearing loss is not as noticeable because it sets in so gradually. This is one main reason why people wait so long to address their hearing health care - most are simply not aware of what they are missing.
Melissa Danchak, Au.D., CCC-A Doctor of Audiology
“Our experience with Kos/Danchak spans many years. We know that we can depend on receiving excellent service – in appointments, waiting time in office and clear, helpful information about our specific needs. On every visit we experience the caring professionalism that gives us confidence to know we are in good, caring hands for betting hearing.” – Melba B., Arlington, TX
WHAT happens during a hearing test? An inspection of your ears – otoscopy – is performed to understand if wax buildup is the issue. A baseline hearing test is performed to find out which pitches and tones you hear, or struggle to hear. A speech understanding assessment is done to understand how well you understand speech and speech in noise. A familiar voice test is also conducted to help identify how much better you could be hearing those you care about the most! WHERE should I go? Kos/Danchak Audiology & Hearing Aids has been helping North Texans hear better for more than 32 years! We also have over 100 five-star online reviews from satisfied people that we have helped hear better! Call (817) 277-7039 and experience better hearing today!

The Paragon Plastic Surgery & Med • Spa: At the Forefront in Helping You Be Your Best
E
Dr. Mark Bishara and the team at The Paragon Plastic Surgery & Med-Spa The Peyco Southwest Realty Team
ver the innovative vanguards, Dr. Mark Bishara and his staff at The Paragon Plastic Surgery & Med•Spa offer a wide range of procedures for patients hoping to improve the way they look and feel. To achieve state-of-the-art results for patients from around the world Dr. Bishara and the Paragon team stay on top of the latest medical technology to produce results patients love. To wit: Dr. Bishara and the staff use new lasers and cutting-edge gel implants for breast augmentation. Whether patients come to him for enhancement or corrective cosmetic surgery, Dr. Bishara delivers results that help patients take pride in how they look and feel after undergoing the various treatments and procedures. “We know that every woman is unique in both her desires and her body shape,” he says. “With that in mind, we take the time during the pre-operative consultations to learn what each patient hopes to gain from breast augmentation surgery and to decide which implant type and implant placement is best. In this way, every one of our patients enjoys completely customized treatment designed with her specific goals in mind.” Dr. Bishara says his patients elect to undergo breast augmentation for many different medical and aesthetic reasons, including balancing breast size, compensating for reduced breast mass after pregnancy or surgery and correcting a congenital breast defect. “Under our doctors’ expert care,” he says, “patients enjoy great-looking, natural-feeling breasts that are one or more cup sizes larger after the operation.” Last year, The Paragon Plastic Surgery & Med-Spa celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Mansfield facility, a beautiful, 8,200 squarefoot facility located on two-and-a-half acres. It has four operating
rooms, multi-bay recovery, two private preoperative rooms, three injection rooms and three spa treatment rooms. There Bishara, an M.D. who has practiced cosmetic surgery in North Texas since 2009, heads a group of surgeons, nurses, nurse anesthetists, aestheticians, surgical assistants and a support staff. Last year, Ben Gbulie, M.D., FACS, a board certified plastic surgeon, was recruited from Tennessee to join the Paragon faculty and began his cosmetic practice in Mansfield. Jeremy Parcels, M.D., also joined the staff and performs procedures related to weight reduction in obese patients. Collectively, The Paragon team offers a wide variety of cosmetic and corrective services for both women and men, including: breast augmentation; tummy tucks; liposuction; face, neck and eyelid lifts; rhinoplasty; robot hair restoration, Botox and fillers. An integral part of the Paragon team is the ensemble of three robots – “junior partners,” Dr. Bishara calls them – that are utilized whenever patients seek his services for the revolutionary ARTAS hair restoration process. Dr. Bishara is one of fewer than 220 Diplomats of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgeons worldwide and was the first doctor in Texas to acquire the ARTAS system. With eight years of robotic experience, he has performed more procedures with them than anyone in the world – more than 1.2 million grafts transplanted. To enhance the experience for all of his patients, regardless of the reason they visit his office, Dr. Bishara often offers friendly perks. “Patients can’t wait for Wrinkle Free Wednesday,” he says. “A recurrent theme is that we have an amazing and kind front office staff. We pride ourselves on customer service.”

ver the past six years, Dr. Jackilyn Dang has been providing state-ofthe-art dental care to Arlington-area patients. Dr. Dang opened Great Oak Dental in spring 2013 and added a second practice, Legacy Park Dental, nearly four years ago. She and her staff provide the utmost care in blending compassion and expertise as part of each patient’s treatment plan. During a patient’s first visit to either office, the staff begins with a comprehensive exam. They also go over the medical history, existing dental restorations and the patient’s current periodontal health. From there, they customize a treatment plan that the patient understands and feels comfortable with. “It’s important for our patients to be fully educated about their dental options, and we never want our patients to feel rushed or to be afraid to ask questions,” Dr. Dang says. Dr. Jackilyn Dang “We take the time to educate and inform our patients about their financial options and procedures so they can make the best decision possible for themselves.” Dr. Dang, who has practiced dentistry over the past decade, says she and the entire staff are dedicated to a professional philosophy that puts the patient first. To that end, both practices offer cutting-edge technology. For example, Dr. Dang offers MTM ® Clear • Aligner, which is a virtually undetectable way to align a smile without traditional braces. The surprisingly affordable Clear Aligner uses clear, removable aligners to correct slight misalignments (such as crowding or gaps). Each aligner is custom fabricated, per the treatment plan arranged between the patient and Dr. Dang, to progressively advance teeth into their ideal position, leaving patients with a beautiful smile. The practices also provide other services, such as implants, braces, veneers and bonding, laser dentistry, crowns and bridges, partials and dentures, and general dentistry. Both practices are taking new patients.

Stoney Kersh has been nominated for the NFL Hall of Fans. He’s definitely deserving • By Toni Randle-Cook hey are known as “America’s Team.” With 8.7 million fans, the Dallas Cowboys have the most followed National Football League team account on Facebook (September 2018, statista.com). And one of them is getting special recognition. Arlington resident Stoney Kersh was nominated for the Ford Hall of Fans. The automobile company chose only six people, nationwide, to participate in the contest. While the honor already exists for fans of NASCAR, 2019 is the inaugural year for the NFL Hall of Fans. “It’s a great honor. I mean, you figure all of the millions of Cowboy fans in the world, and they chose me,” says Kersh. “I still can’t wrap my mind around it. I’m truly blessed to be able to represent the Cowboys.” Kersh began collecting Dallas Cowboys memorabilia when he was four years old with a set of football cards – which he still has

to this day. The 51-year-old says he loves stuff with the star on it and will shop everywhere and anywhere he can find it: “I’ve been known to wait in line all night long if I saw something at an estate sale.” Over the years, the collection has grown – a lot! “I used to keep it to myself, and my friends would come over and see it and say you have to do something with all of this,” recalls Kersh. “So all I could come up with is a museum.” The Kersh home has been turned into the “Stoney’s Dallas Cowboys Museum.” It’s so impressive that the Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau has listed it as an attraction on its website. The museum consists of three buildings, as well as several vehicles and an outdoor display area. “That’s what we do this for, is to show this to people,” says Stoney’s wife, Diana Kersh. The Kershs welcome families, schools and other groups into their home. They say they get a few visitors each week, but the number tends to increase when the Cowboys are playing well. They’ve opened their door to fans from Mexico, New York, even as far away as Hawaii. “We get the most joy out of seeing people smile,” says Stoney. “That’s what it’s all about.” And while they are happy to host any football fan, the couple was excited to have these celebrities stop by this year: former Cowboys Michael Irvin, Dixon Edwards, Lincoln Coleman and NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell. After his museum tour, Goodell invited the Hershs to his suite at AT&T Stadium to watch a Cowboys game. “Mr. Goodell just sat and talked to me like I was one of the guys,” says Hersh. “I’d say it’s been a dream come true, but I never dreamt this.” The winner of the fan contest will be announced on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3. He or she will be inducted into the Ford Hall of Fans in July at an event in Canton, Ohio. Photos: Toni Randle-Cook “We don’t even have a Dallas Cowboys player nominated to go into the Hall of Fame this year, so if we could get a fan that would be awesome!” exclaims Hersh. THE ROCKET CAR
W
This 63-year-old classic loaded with family traditions is like new again • By Richard Greene hen classic car collector Neils Agather wanted his favorite vehicle restored to showroom condition, he called on Arlington’s Robert Massengale to take on the task. The Artesian Blue/Alcan White 1956 Super 88 Oldsmobile was purchased new by his father the same year Neils was born. In fact, his first ride in it was the trip home from the hospital. He repeated the trip twice more on the occasions of the birth of his two daughters. So, to say it had to be perfectly restored was entirely understandable. Robert had worked on three of Neils’ other cars and established his reputation of producing the desired results. After 14 months of meticulous labor ranging from the selection of tiny stainless steel screws to attach the refurbished trim to the complete rebuild of the massive 324-cubic-inch Rocket V8 engine, it was ready for delivery to its very proud owner. The Agathers put some 320,000 miles on the car over the years, and now they will add to that number as Neils drives it around to the delight of those who get to enjoy seeing it on the road as a

reminder of the transformative decade of the American car culture. Everything about the car is original. Only the re-plated gleaming chrome and upholstery was subcontracted. All the rest of the work was done by Robert, one piece and one day at a time until it was finally finished to specifications first achieved by General Motors engineers and assemblers more than six decades ago. One thing that is superior to what the big car manufacturer was able to do at the time is the exterior paint finish. After top-of-theline, two-stage Spies Hecker base coats and four applications of clear coat followed by labor intensive wet sanding, the car now has the gleam of today’s new vehicles. The first generation of the Olds 88 was developed in the postwar years of 1949-1953. Car makers had resumed the business of building automobiles in their plants that had been converted to produce WWII fighting machines. Oldsmobile’s success with the car led to the company’s slogan, “Make a Date with a Rocket 88.” Its name inspired what some say was the first ever Rock & Roll record released in 1951 by Bill Haley and the Saddlemen – “Rocket 88.” 52
ARLINGTON TODAY • February 2019 • arlingtontoday.com
The second generation ranging from 1954 to 1956 saw the Oldsmobile completely restyled with longer and lower bodies and wrap-around windshields and rear windows. The ’56 models like this one introduced a new front split grille and revised taillights and a revised chrome design along the sides. Horsepower increased to 240 for the Super 88, along with a new fourspeed transmission that added a new “Park” position to the shift console. The new oval speedometer replaced the round version, further enhancing the dramatic art-deco dashboard. Robert’s work on this car is a tribute to the passion the GM designers displayed across the company’s lineup from Chevys to the Cadillacs of the era with, according to some collectors, the Olds 88 as a flagship among them all. I first met Robert when he worked on my two old cars and found him to be capable in every way of keeping them in top-running condition and ensuring their appearance was up to original standards that made the enjoyment of owning them complete. What he has done for the Agather family is a pinnacle example of his many skills.

Texas Rangers to extend national award-winning scholarship program Rangers Board of Directors member Ken Hall, Richard Greene, Rangers Chief Operating Officer Neil Leibman and Mayor Jeff Williams looking over the MLB Commissioner’s Award recognizing the scholars program for Philanthropic Excellence.
W
hen the Texas Rangers launched the Richard Greene Scholarship Program in 1997, the promise from the owners at that time was to annually provide $10,000 in college money to one recipient from each of Arlington’s public high schools who demonstrated academic excellence and leadership potential. The commitment was to continue the program for 20 years through The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation. It came about as part of the many ways the ballclub planned to support the community that had partnered with them, during Greene’s tenure as mayor, to build The Ballpark in Arlington. As we previously reported, the Foundation’s scholarship program, having exceeded expectations of what recipients were achieving, was recognized nationally by winning the prestigious Major League Baseball Commissioner’s Award for Philanthropic Excellence. Now comes news from Rangers owners Ray Davis and Neil Leibman of plans for the Foundation to continue the program in perpetuity. They announced plans to raise an endowment of $1 million to achieve those ends and launched the kickoff of that effort in a gathering among community leaders and supporters of the Foundation.

Those attending the reception at Globe Life Park heard about the successes of the 114 Greene Scholars the program has helped to produce and how these outstanding young people are changing the world. While there are many examples among those who have been chosen for the program, recent achievements of one of the students, selected in 2010, is illustrative of that bold claim. Omomayowa Olawoyin’s parents brought her and her siblings to America from Nigeria when she was seven years old. She says that opportunity was “just enough” to launch what was to become an extraordinary response to being given a chance to succeed. Finishing first among 426 graduates from Seguin High School, she selected the University of Texas at Arlington from all the universities that would have liked to have had her as an entering freshman. Now pursuing her PhD in Mathematics, “Mayowa” has already contributed significantly to research first through the Undergraduate Training in Theoretical and Ecology Research program, where she engaged in the versatility of mathematics and shared that experience at numerous conferences, polishing her presentation skills. Next was research in mathematics education through the McNair Scholars Program, investigating how teacher reactions to pivotal
Making the world a better place ... moments in instruction impacted the level of student discourse in math classrooms at the elementary school level. Now with funding from the National Science Foundation’s graduate fellowship program, she’s doing research in mathematical biology and developing scientific models to describe the spread of diseases such as Zika. That initiative has already resulted in the publication of her collaborative research in the ScienceDirect Journal modeling multiple transmission pathways of the Zika virus. The abstract offers laymen a view of the breakthrough: “Although the Zika virus is transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of infected female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, it can also be sexually and vertically transmitted within both populations. In this study, we develop a new mathematical model of the Zika virus which incorporates sexual transmission in humans and mosquitoes, and vertical transmission in mosquitoes, and mosquito to human transmission through bites.” Included here is just one of the math formulas used to build the model that produces the new knowledge that confirms how she is changing the world by informing global medicine through math and science.
Omomayowa Olawoyin, who was chosen to be a Richard Greene scholar in 2010, epitomizes what the program represents. The high school valedictorian earned an undergraduate degree at UTA and is now pursuing her PhD in Mathematics. The formula to the left is part of research she is doing to help eradicate the Zika virus. “Mayowa” also recently married Toyin Richardson Awe.
She credits the Rangers Foundation for the start of her 10 years of educational pursuits that have prepared her for contributions that now may accelerate to new heights: “The Richard Greene Scholarship program was extremely influential in my academic professional journey.” That journey thus far has also been highlighted by her marriage last year to Toyin Richardson Awe. A traditional cultural ceremony that was celebrated by the couple’s extended families marked the occasion and added the dimension of marriage to her very busy life. The program’s real-life results produced by students and professionals alike that have been and are in the program is what inspired MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred’s explanation of his award decision that we reported in our December issue but bears repeating: “This unique initiative distinguished itself for its emphasis on mentorship, career opportunities and close ties to the Arlington community. The investment into the future of Arlington high school students by the Rangers and local city leadership has resulted in notable professional and collegiate careers by the Scholars.” The Rangers decision to continue the program, based on more than 20 years’ experience with it, is very good news, indeed.

Affairs of the Heart
21 ways to say
Happy Valentine’s Day
By Karen Gavis
1. Go “parking” – Experience a night beneath the stars at one of
Arlington’s city parks. Whether it’s a picnic in the park, a ride on a bicycle built for two or a quest to identify mating calls of the wild, a romantic outdoor adventure awaits.
2. Be part of the “inn” crowd – Sanford House, the elegant bed and breakfast inn located at 506 N. Center Street, also boasts a restaurant, bar and full service spa. With its picturesque veranda, classical music-themed rooms and flavorful wines, the entire B&B experience spells romance.
3. Go Live! – Texas Live!, the state-of-the-art entertainment venue
located in the heart of the Arlington’s entertainment district, will be pairing live music with world class cuisine. Brad Thompson will play at Troy’s, while Texas country music artist Bradley Banning will perform at Lockhart’s, with both shows starting at 8 p.m. on Feb 14. AND ... the shows are free.
4. Grab a flight downtown – With the craft beer scene booming, there are several places to sample some new brews downtown that are within walking distance of one another, such as Kool Keg, On Tap, Division Brewing and Legal Draft. 5. Check out “The Book of Love” – Steal away to the ultrainnovative George W. Hawkes downtown library (100 S. Center St.), where book lovers can revel in the modern technology, scenic rooftop patio or a good read. 6. Revel in “Raindrops” – B.J. Thomas lovers can anticipate more
than just “Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song” when the crooner settles in for a romantic evening Feb. 15 at Arlington Music Hall (224 N. Center St.).
7. Starry, starry night – Go cosmic at the University of Texas at Arlington Planetarium (700 Planetarium Place). “Romancing the Stars” will be showing at 6 p.m. on Feb. 14-16.
8. Art for your sake – Arlington Museum of Art (201 W. Main St.)

9. Java or vino? (Either way, you’re covered) – Start Valentine’s
Day off at one of the hottest spots in town, Urban Alchemy Coffee + Wine Bar (403 E. Main St.), as Frost Bank shares the love with a free first cup of coffee from 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. Not exactly a morning person? Not a problem. This subtly chic bar serves up wine, as well.
10. Claim your steak – There is no better romantic view in all of
Arlington than that from the windows of Mercury Chophouse. The upscale eatery sits high atop the city at 2221 E. Lamar Blvd. And the cuisine is as enticing as the atmosphere.
11. Plan your escape – Blue Ops Mission (351 W. Randol Mill
Road, Suite 131) offers private escape rooms where teammates can solve puzzles while having fun and trying to escape before the sands of time run out.
12. Tour history – Top O’ Hill Terrace (3001 W. Division St.) was once a historical gambling hall – complete with an underground escape tunnel. Now the location of Arlington Baptist University, the storied site holds tours, as Vickie Bryant gives an entertaining historical look back at a time when the rich and famous would frequent the casino, which was tastefully disguised as a tea room. 13. Craft a gift for your honey – For those with knack for making things – and a yearning to make something for someone special – there’s a “Craft My Valentine” session at 11 a.m. on Feb. 9 at Mansfield Public Library (104 S. Wisteria). The session is free, and supplies are provided.
14. Give love a chance to bloom – Calloway’s Nursery (1424 N. Center St.) provides a beautiful backdrop for bonding while couples plan their organic outdoor or patio garden. 15. Share some love songs – While some might view vinyl records as retro-ish, Truth Vinyl (300 E. Abram St., Suite 190) has an ultramodern feel. Plunder the cubicles for favorite love songs or dance tunes. Better yet, take to the stage and woo your significant other via open mic. >>>

Six Flags to debut new El Diablo roller coaster
W
hen Six Flags Over Texas opens for the 2019 season on Feb. 23, the famed theme park will introduce its 14th – and possibly its most exciting – roller coaster, El Diablo. The park warns thrill seekers not to let the coaster’s simple design fool them — this coaster is all about delivering some seriously powerful thrills. After park guests are locked securely into the 32-passenger curved train, this super-sized loop gets going right away, rocking back and forth as it slowly builds up energy. With every pass through the fly-through station, the train gets closer and closer to cresting the top of the loop. Finally, the train reaches the apex of the ride — a full 100 feet in the air — all while experiencing some serious hang time. Thanks to the unique, face-to-face seating train,
you can watch your friends and family’s reactions throughout this Texas-sized thrill. El Diablo will be located in the Spain section of the park.

Two new businesses make Mansfield debut
A PAIR OF NEW BUSINESSES, By the Horns Brewery and Tacos & Avocados, have joined the commercial lineup at The Backyard project at 109 S. Main St. in downtown Mansfield. The brewery and the eatery are located on land that once housed a gas station and auto repair shop, and they feature roll-up garage doors and hand-painted advertisements for oil changes and tires. Inside, patrons can order tacos (and more) and visit a working brewery that pipes nine different beers directly into the bar taps. 68

he Arlington Animal Services Center recently celebrated 10 years of providing care, services and educational programs that aim to protect the health, safety and welfare of both animals and the community. Last month, the Arlington City Council issued a proclamation in recognition of the growth and achievements of the Arlington Animal Services Center, its hardworking staff and dedicated volunteers. More than 58,000 animals have been adopted or transferred to one of the many adoption placement partners since the state-of-the-art facility opened in January 2009. The center, located at 1000 SE Green Oaks Blvd., was made possible through funding approved by Arlington voters in the 2003 bond election as well as individual and private contributions totaling more than $300,000. “Because of the outstanding leadership and management, the awesome staff, and the fantastic volunteers the shelter has been able to save and help many animals,” says Judith Flynn, Animal Services Center Advisory Board chair. “The shelter works with many quality organizations with healthy, caring results. I am proud to be a part of this amazing, caring service.” The anniversary celebration included a presentation by Manager Chris Huff, who provided volunteers and visitors with an overview of the shelter’s accomplishments, community opportunities, and the City’s deep appreciation for all the volunteers and partnerships instrumental to the shelter’s success. Animal Services had a 78.76-percent live release rate in 2018, thanks to 500 Service Enterprise Certified Volunteers and partnerships with rescue organizations.

rlington Tennis Center offers lessons for all levels and ages to help youth players develop basic stroke techniques and advance their motor skills. Players from age 3 to 18 can learn the basics or improve on their game. 10 & Under Tennis Lessons – 10 & Under Tennis lessons give juniors an opportunity to learn tennis with equipment appropriate to their size. Red ball is the beginning stage, followed by orange and then green. Red Ball – Red ball is the beginning stage of tennis instruction and includes a slower foam ball to help players develop good technique. These lessons are for ages 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8 at this level. Orange Ball – Orange ball is the second stage of tennis instruction and includes a slightly faster ball and modified scoring to develop good technique. This is for ages 9-10. Green Ball – Green ball is the third and final stage of tennis instruction before using traditional tennis balls. The green ball is
faster than the orange ball, yet still slower than a traditional yellow tennis ball. These lessons are also for ages 9-10. Junior tennis lessons are for players ages 10 and up to learn and improve on their tennis skills. They include: Technique Lessons – Technique classes are an entry level for students with minimal to no experience. Hail, home!
Please join me each month as I share a millennial’s perspective of Arlington/Mansfield • By Sara Pintilie
H
i! I’m happy you stopped on this page and gave me a few minutes of your time. My name is Sara Pintilie, and I am a millennial that lives in Arlington and loves the city. I mean, I’m more than that, but I want to give you the main points – my elevator pitch if you will – for why you might want to give my column a bit of a read. As a millennial (I promise, I will restrict my usage of that word), I see Arlington at a bit of a crossroads. I spent my single-digits in Arlington, moved to Mansfield until I was 18 (Go Tigers!) and returned to Arlington to go to college at the University of Texas at Arlington. I have lived in Arlington; Mansfield; Fort Worth; Kennedale; Benbrook; Leicester, U.K.; Seoul, South Korea; Las Colinas and Dallas – but found myself back in Arlington Why? My friends ask that all the time. “Why Arlington?,” “There’s nothing to do in Arlington.” My answer is almost always the same: “You just don’t get it.” The Arlington I see can’t seem to get past the Arlington my Dallasite friends see – which is a bummer, because Arlington is “fire.” (Did I use that right?) But seriously, Arlington is at a moment in time where it is becoming a burgeoning community filled with innovation and entertainment. It’s even there in some areas. And Downtown. Man, Downtown Arlington isn’t your parent’s downtown anymore. When my friends and I went to UTA less than 10 years ago, not one of those revitalizations were there. College Park wasn’t even in existence. Though we love J. Gilligan’s with all our hearts – I am

envious of the college kids that can walk to Grease Monkey or Old School Pizza & Suds. Things keep a changin’, and it is all for the better. There’s always a pleasant surprise around the corner. Last year, I wanted to see Terry Crews – actor and Sara’s hero – speak during his University tour. When I looked it up, he was speaking at College Park Center as part of the Maverick Speaker Series. My friend and I went, and it was an incredible experience that was only 10 minutes down the road from my house. And, just the other day, I ordered a cute sleep mask (I’m big into sleep hygiene) online from The Sleepy Cottage. Low and behold, when I looked into the company, I found out that quirky small business is located in Downtown Arlington. Arlington has this ability to keep me on my toes – I love it. So, dear reader, hopefully you are still reading this (Yay! And Thank You! ), because in future columns I want to show Downtown Arlington, with an you my Arlington, an Arlington eclectic mix of eateries and that maybe you, your relative or entertainment options, is ever evolving – and becoming ever friend weren’t really acquainted more attractive to millennials. with. Or you are already savvy and want to rub it in your Dallasite friends’ faces (I got your back, fam). Either way, starting this month and continuing forward, I’m going to show Arlington some millennial love.
Sara Pintilie is a distinguished writer, editor and photographer who calls Arlington home.

Surprise!
Spring training begins this month, and that can mean only one thing: Baseball! • By John Rhadigan
W
hen I lived and worked in Michigan, going to spring training was the greatest trip of the year. I mean, think about it, a trip to the spring home of your favorite baseball team meant leaving snow and ice behind. It meant basking in the warm sun. It meant grouper sandwiches. Most importantly it meant Baseball! For nearly three decades now I have been traveling to spring training from Texas. I have never left snow or ice behind. The first thing I do each day at Spring Training now is to cover myself with sunscreen, so there is no basking. Since the Rangers moved to Arizona I have not found a good grouper sandwich – I have not even looked that hard in that landlocked state. Still, going to spring training is the greatest trip of the year. If you are wondering why I can explain it in one word: Baseball! Some of my fondest Rangers memories were made at one of the two spring training homes I have visited. I wish I had been covering the team when they trained in Pompano Beach. I hear tales of media hotels right on the beach and a place called the Fish Shack for grouper sandwiches. But I digress ... The distractions are few in Surprise, and it was the same way in Port Charlotte, where you were 20 minutes on a good day from the beach. The focus in each town is, wait for it, Baseball! I remember my first trip to Rangers Spring training. The year was 1990, and there was labor unrest, a lockout, the threat of “replacement players.” But on March 19 the owners and players agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement, and I was on the next plane to Florida. I am reasonably sure that Nolan Ryan was not at the gate of the complex to welcome me to Port Charlotte, but he might as well have been. I was thrilled to spend the next several weeks watching and reporting on this 40-something-year-old man getting ready for his second season with the Rangers. It would be a good season, too. One which saw him pitch his sixth no hitter and record his 300th win. With it, he moved into the top 20 of pitchers with the most wins in the history of Baseball! The thing I remember most about Nolan that spring was not his ability or his longevity or his tenacity. The lasting memory is of his kindness. Each day Rangers staff members would pass out cards to hundreds of fans on hand. The card got you a spot in line to get an
78

autograph from Nolan. My memory is that he signed every day and he signed for everyone who had a card. The greatest thing about Nolan was that he didn’t just sign, he talked. When the fans asked questions he answered. When they told stories he listened. When they looked him in the eye he looked back. After a live shot on NBC 5 one day he asked if my photographer and I would like to get a picture with him. To this day that picture hangs in my den. It serves as a daily reminder of my first love, Baseball! There have been other Hall of Famers to follow Nolan through Rangers camp. Pudge is on my wall, too. His This month, this great work at spring training was constant and image returns to Surprise, quiet. The biggest buzz I remember at spring Ariz. training was the year Alex Rodriguez signed. He had to sit on top of the dugout for the “first day press conference.” Every media outlet in Texas and most of the national media were there to hear from a guy who had just signed a $252 million contract. Amazingly, that does not sound like a lot today, but in 2000 we could not believe that a guy was going to make 252 million dollars to play Baseball! This year Rangers spring training will be a lot like it has been for the past 15 years or so. It will be relaxed and intense. After A-Rod left, Michael Young became the undisputed leader of this team. His approach was passed on to Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus. His approach: this is just a game – but it is a game that is really important to a lot of people. As such, the players treat it with respect and play it with intensity. New manager Chris Woodward is one of Michael’s childhood friends and teammates. Like Michael he gets it. This is a game, but, in a way, it is more than that because it is Baseball! So if you are looking for something to do, somewhere to go between February 13 and March 25, may I suggest Surprise, Ariz. Thirty plus years of covering spring training has taught me that you won’t really care about the weather, the food or the accommodations. The thing you will remember about your trip to spring training is the ... Baseball!

Boom!
The latest growth statistics in the city, region and state are truly amazing • By Richard Greene
R
adio DJs coined a popular refrain when their station was going to play one popular hit record after another – “And the hits just keep on coming.” It means one good thing after another is happening. We live in a part of the country where that phrase has a whole different meaning. It can easily be applied when looking over the latest population numbers for our city, region and the great state we call home. Texas is again the fastest growing of all the states. Our numbers increase by about one thousand persons every day. Yes, every day. That means Texas has grown during 2018 equivalent to a city almost the size of Arlington. When adding up the combined residents of the four states that surround Texas, you come up with about half our population, which is approaching the 29 million mark that will be achieved before this year’s end. We’ll likely hit the 30 million within the next two or three years. Closer to home the numbers are even more awesome. Our urban region is the fourth largest in the country and, with a current population nearing 7.5 million, the fastest growing of them all. Only the metropolitan regions of New York, Los Angeles and Chicago are larger than ours. Then there’s a distinction for Tarrant County not matched anywhere else in the state. We are the only county with two cities the size of Fort Worth and Arlington. Here’s another way to relate to the size of Arlington, now the country’s 47th largest city – take this pop quiz and see if you know the answer: What do all the following well-known cities have in common? – New Orleans, Tulsa, Cleveland, Tampa, Honolulu, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Orlando – and the list goes on. Here’s another list – see if you know how these cities relate to ours: Salt Lake City, Amarillo, Little Rock, Augusta, Charleston, Shreveport, Mobile, Fort Lauderdale, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Tallahassee and Grand Rapids. Answers are at the end of this story – no peeking while you ponder if you know. Of the nation’s 25 largest cities, six of them are in Texas. No other state has as many on that list. California has only four, and New York has but one.

Among those three metropolitan areas larger than ours, their growth rates since the 2010 census have come nowhere close to ours that exceeds 15 percent. New York’s is less than four percent, about the same as Los Angeles and Chicago is less than one percent, on the verge of decreasing. The entire state of New York actually saw the largest population decrease, losing more than 48,000 people, followed by Illinois with a loss of more than 45,000. According to Forbes, the U. S. Census Bureau reported in the five years from 2012 to 2016 that more than 520,000 Californians moved out. Their main destination? You guessed it, more than 114,000 of them came to Texas. For the same five-year period, an estimated 542,432 more Americans moved to Texas than moved out. The Forbes report concluded that it is Texas’ strong job market and economy that sustains “the state’s vibrant population growth.” A year from now we all will be counted again. The results of the 2020 census are expected to provide Texas increased power in Washington with three more seats in the U. S. House of Representatives. Okay, here’s the answers to those two questions: The first list is of cities with fewer residents than Arlington. Many who see these familiar cities just presume they are larger than ours. That surprises a lot of people. The second is a list of cities less than half the size of Arlington. Here’s another factoid that people don’t usually think about: 24 states in the country don’t have a city with as large a population as Arlington. Our greatest advantage of being centrally located between the big cities to our East and West has always denied us the visibility that so many smaller cities around the country enjoy. Nevertheless, considering all the dynamics of this great region, we wouldn’t trade places with any other city anywhere in the land.
Richard Greene served as Arlington’s mayor from 1987-1997 and currently teaches in the University of Texas at Arlington’s graduate program in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs.
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
