[ Renovation of an old house ] Professor Shafaei -
Fall 2010
The subject of the Design studio was renovation of an old house while preserving the old columns.The Site of the project was in Azar street in Esfahan. the house was designed for a family that the parents were teachers and each needed a room to hold their class sessions in them. The class rooms were separated from the other spaces of the house. The family needed a Private Yard that was out of the sight of other houses. The concept of the project was the private Yard that all the private spaces of the house were dominant of. The green open spaces of the yard supplied the view of all spaces of the house.

south elevation - scale : 1/100 In Iran there is a rule that only 60% of the land can be built, and the rest should be open space. In figure the purple space is the maximum that can be built according to the 60% rule.
The west side of the project was extruded to get more eastern light. Because the west light is inappropriate in the climate of the project.
The family that the house was designed for needed privacy in their private and semi private spaces, thus a part of the western side of the project was stretched to block the view from the entrance to the private parts of the house.
The public spaces, which the parents classes were held were in the south part of the house, separated from the private and semi private spaces of the house.
The parking which was a one story building was exception to the 60% rule, and it was placed in a way to help the private yard be more out of sight

This is the main private yard of the house, which none of the public spaces are dominant of. The main sitting area of the family is located at the north-west corner of the yard, to be shaded in summer, and get east sunlight at winter.

[ village club ] Professor Farzian - Professor Shahbazi- Professor Maghrebi - Spring 2011 The subject of the Studio was Designing a Urban Club for a region in Esfahan, named Azadan. The design started with sketching some of the main spaces of the Club, after that the plans of the Club were formed according to the sketches. The main concept of the project is to make people who go to the club feel the presence of time.

The 4th Design Studio was a Biomimcry design project; Biomimicry is a design method that is inspired by the living creatures and nature. The project was designing a facade of a commercial complex in Chahar-Bagh street in Esfahan,Iran. The project was inspired by the human body. The facade had to be a energy saving element that reduced the energy loss, Thus warm blooded creatures mechanism was evaluated, and the facade had to work how warm blooded creatures work, and fix the air temperature of the inside of the building. 14 | 20
Human thermoregulation In hot conditions Endocrine sweat glands under the skin secrete sweat (a fluid containing mostly water with some dissolved ions) which travels up the sweat duct, through the sweat pore and onto the surface of the skin. This causes heat loss via evaporative cooling ; however, a lot of essential water is lost. The hairs on the skin lie flat, preventing heat from being trapped by the layer of still air between the hairs. This is caused by tiny muscles under the surface of the skin called Arrector pili muscles relaxing so that their attached hair follicles are not erect. These flat hairs increase the flow of air next to the skin increasing heat loss by convection. When environmental temperature is above core body temperature, sweating is the only physiological way for humans to lose heat. Arterioles Vasodilation occurs, this is the process of relaxation of smooth muscle in Arterioles walls allowing increased blood flow through the artery. This redirects blood into the superficial capillaries in the skin increasing heat loss by convection and conduction. In cold conditions Sweat stops being produced. The minute muscles under the surface of the skin called erector pili muscles (attached to an individual hair follicle) contract (pi lo erection), lifting the hair follicle upright. This makes the hairs stand on end which acts as an insulating layer, trapping heat. This is what also causes goose bumps since humans don›t have very much hair and the contracted muscles can easily be seen.

In cold conditions the hairs stand on end which acts as an insulating layer, trapping heat, and creating some air gaps, and stopping wind flow on the skin.
The design process of the facade was inspired by this quality of hairs, in addition the behaviour of the hairs was matched with sunlight absorption of the facade.

daytime view - summer The facade is at the most closed status in summer for blocking the sunlight and better wind flow on the surface of the surface. In the winter the facade is in the most open status for better sunlight absorption and blocking the wind flow.

The 5th Design studio project was designing a Residential complex in Mirzataher Street in Esfahan,Iran. The concept of the project was combination of lots of cubes for better connection with the site. The houses were all pushed and pulled to provide a good view of the site for all of them. All the houses of the complex have open spaces for better connection with the site. 17 | 20

The design started with transforming a module for better sunlight absorption and better view of the site.
The module was cut in to four pieces, and the forth piece was removed for south-east light and providing a yard.
In the next step the module was mirrored to form two house units.

The upper houses were pushed backward for providing open spaces and terraces.

My Thesis project was a professional project in Piramoun Architectural office, which I continued it as my thesis project, the project was designing the administrative office building of the medical university of Lar. Lar is a city in Fars, Iran. The hot climate of the Lar is it’s most important quality. The concept of the project as displaced in the following figures was providing better sunlight for all the spaces of the project.
At first the project was divided into three masses according to the Areas provided by the university

The masses were distanced from each other for providing sunlight and open spaces
The masses were bended to be Perpendicular to the south direction, which is the best direction for sunlight in Lar
The masses were transformed for matching the site

The ramps and stairways connected the three masses
The middle mass was lifted up in order to create a path from the main entrance to the back yard behind the project
The upper figure shows the main path that connects the southern and northern facades of the project. This path is used by the students of the university everyday, and plays an important role in connection of the different parts of the university.

The view below, is the courtyard that the students can spend their time in, while their administrative processes are being done by the administrative authorities.

the exhibition of the week of research
[ booth design ] project finished in 1 week The project was building a booth for holding students artworks in less than a week with a budget less than 100$. The dome was created with cheap recycled vases. The dome was supposed to represent the feeling old domes created with bricks. This project was designed by me, and built by me and two of my friends.

The vases were bigger at the bottom part of the dome, and those which were near the center of the dome they were smaller. In the project near 1000 vases were used, and after the exhibition the dome was disassembled and the vases were return to flower stores.

Velux competition
[ Light of life ] Supervisor Dr.Gharaati - (Group Project) The project lies within one of the second degree squares in Esfahan’s historical context. This place has the potential to witnesses a considerable number of people every day; including artists, tourists, photographers and the like. People would hang out: they can talk, rest or display their art works out there. We have two major obstacles making this place alive: -Because of the Esfahan’s hot weather, the very first problem is the absence of shadow or protection of some sort from the sharp sunlight. Next complication would be lack of spatial clarity Considering the fact that individuals show different behaviour throughout the day, we will need a shade that is alive and as dynamic and can adopt itself to the daily motions and emotions.

As the sun rises in the morning, life begins: people wake up and streets get crowded once again. Everything moves forward from a darkness and silence toward life and light. This phenomenon drew our attention to what it is that makes sunlight irreplaceable. The main difference between the sunlight and other lights is its life-giving energy which comes from its distinctive wave-length. We started with examining the effect of light on human›s daily life: first, we have day and night which are the results of the amount of light we receive from the sun. Second, we have seasons that are the results of the amount of energy that reaches earth. We want to visualize this energy and turn it into an ever-changing pattern, from which one can envision the flow of life. On the other hand, we have humans with their all unpredictable behaviour. It would be startling to have a building that presents almost the same amount of unpredictably and randomness. When it comes to drawing, among all mediums, we get the most randomness by using water colour. This randomness best matches with the mood of nature and life. 30 | 20
That›s how we came to the idea and used liquids› behaviour to visualize randomness: -When a small amount of liquid is placed between two sheets of flat glass, we can see a sudden change in its form as a result of capillarity action. -Contraction and expansion are other liquid behaviours when exposed to temperature fluctuations. As the temperature rises the liquid expands and blocks the light, and when it falls the liquid contracts and more light passes through.
At dawn, the city is calm; people sleeping and the structure is static. Only the rustle of leaves can be heard.

As the sun rises, people wake up, birds start singing, streets get crowded gradually and the sunlight sets the structure in motion.
The shadow changes from time to time as we go along the day and makes the place even more attractive.
At noon when the heat is at its peak and the weather becomes too hot for people, the liquid expands by the heat and spreads all over the glasses, which subsequently casts a shadow over the place for interior comfort

The project was near Emam sq, Esfahan, Iran. The western facade of the project was the main facade of the project, as it was the only facade of the project that was connected to an urban space. The windows of the western facade were deep, for creating terraces and controlling the western sunlight. The project is built with bricks in order to have a historical feeling because of the historical site of the project. The project was under supervision of Mr.Shahbazi my employer. My role in the project was designing the western facade, and modelling/rendering of the project.

The project was started at winter 2012, and is not finished yet. The concept of the project was based on providing good views from the site. The client wanted to build 80% of the site, which leads to a small yard, thus the design of the southern facade had to prevent the yard from looking small.

fall 2012-spring 2013 The project was a restaurant in Azna, Lorestan, Iran. The main element of the project was the ceiling, that were formed with curved lines. My role in the project was Designing the ceiling plus modelling/rendering the scenes of the project. The project was started in fall 2012 and finished in summer 2013.

The restaurant was divided into two parts, one part was dedicated to fast food, another part was a fancy restaurant. The ceilings of each part was different, due to the function of that part. The ceiling of the fancy restaurant was like a curtain, and the ceiling of the fast food section was inspired by geometrical forms used in historical architecture of Iran.

The project was a memorial symbol for the lost and dead soldiers of the Iran-Iraq war. The project was inspired by historical arcs of Iran. My role in the project was designing and modelling the arcs of the project.
