PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD Master Builders’ Excellence Awards represent the height of achievement for our industry in Victoria. For the ninth year, we meet at Crown Palladium for our celebration of great homes completed during the previous 12 months. Each one is exceptional and tells a unique story. The Master Builders brand represents a commitment to quality in building. The range of outstanding homes presented in this magazine demonstrates that commitment by our members. These projects also showcase the incredible and diverse skills of our trades people who make these projects possible. We should all be proud of the achievements of our industry peers as we celebrate work well done. I congratulate all the people and companies who have entered these awards. You take obvious pride in your work and are worthy entrants. Of course, there can be only one winner in each category, but every one of you has performed to an outstanding standard. We congratulate Larkin and Drought Builders Pty Ltd for earning the awards for both Master Builder of the Year, and Regional Residential Builder of the Year, for their project in Barwon Heads. Overlooking the Barwon River, the design of this home called for a builder who was able to meet exacting standards with many

challenging materials and finishes. Off form concrete is used extensively throughout, curved walls soften the visual mass, and three-metre high glass panels open a view to the swimming pool immediately outside. The attention to detail throughout is exemplary and has exceeded the client’s expectations. We also congratulate Peter Lo Bartolo, managing Director of APC Build dPty Ltd, our 2019 Young Builder of the Year. The firm undertakes 16-20 projects per year and employs two project managers and four site managers. The firm’s largest project includes a $2.5M two-storey home in Canterbury. We celebrate your achievements, and to you and all the other winners tonight, on behalf of all our members, well done to you all. Chief Judge Frank Pavan is Managing Director of Pavan Consultants, a Melbourne based, multi-disciplined firm of project managers, building designers, engineers and interior designers. Frank is a civil/structural engineer with post-graduate qualifications in building design, project management and commercial and domestic estimating. He has worked in many and varied industries including mining, petro-chemical, commercial, retail, educational, defence, industrial, judicial, local, state and federal governments including multi-unit developments. Frank has 38 years of experience in the building and construction industry and has worked in Saudi Arabia, Italy and in many Australian capital and regional cities. He is a Fellow of Engineers Australia (NPER), Fellow of the Australian Institute of Building and a member of the Building Designers Association of Victoria, Master Builders Association of Victoria, and the Green Building Council of Australia. He is also a VCAT building expert and a member of the Australian Society of Building Consultants. Pavan Consultants has won three project management awards in 2014 and 2017, that latest being a National Award in project management. The firm also won three design awards in 2011. He has worked on projects valued up to $30Million. Frank is the immediate past President of the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Building and is an on-going industry representative with the Victorian Building Authority.

Sustainable Building Advisor Master Builders Victoria Philip has been employed as the Sustainable Building Advisor at Master Builders Victoria for the past 15 years and on building and construction related projects and research for the last 18 years. Phil’s extensive experience in education and training has informed the development of nationally recognised sustainable construction training programs and the national roll out of the accredited Master Builder Green Living program. He has provided advice on sustainability solutions and onsite environmental management on projects ranging from large infrastructure developments to small residential building companies. Phil has also spent time working for the Environment Protection Authority Victoria, Melbourne Water, local government and as an academic. In 2014 he received a fellowship from the International Specialised Skills Institute which enabled him to travel to Germany in 2015 to investigate job skills in the prefabricated construction industry. He has presented at forums and conferences both nationally and internationally on sustainability, modular construction and emerging industry trends. Philip has a PhD in Ecology and land management, Masters of Environmental Science and is a Certified Passive House Consultant.

Environmental Building Consultant Trainer MBAV- Sustainability Principles (2014 - 2018) Growing up in The Netherlands, Jan started his career as a writer/journalist and public relations manager with Elsevier’s Publishing Company in Amsterdam. The attraction of wide open spaces saw him immigrate in 1983 to the Yukon, Canada, where after a short stint as a communications strategist for the government, he became involved in Canada’s super energy efficient building program labelled ‘R-2000’. Over the following 12 years Jan developed extensive knowledge in sustainable and energy efficient construction. First starting as a builder of R-2000 homes in Canada’s far North in the 1980’s, he later progressed into a building consultant and building inspector. 1995 saw Jan immigrate to Australia. He soon discovered that the importance of energy efficiency was not widely recognised in Australian construction. To share his knowledge in this area, he developed a number of demonstration projects: ‘The Healthy House”, ‘The Eco-home’ and ‘ The Economical House’, which were all built in Sunbury, Victoria. He received invitations to guest lecture at a number of universities on sustainable building, and developed training programs for energy efficient construction. As an environmental building consultant Jan advises on a wide range of issues to both industry and private clients. As a trainer for Master Builders in Victoria, and 35 years of experience, Jan combines his journalism background with his practical building skills. His focus is strongly on future industry developments with education being the key ingredient.

Jeff is a qualified and registered domestic builder and building inspector. During his time completing primarily architectural new homes and extension/renovations throughout Melbourne’s South East, Jeff completed his Diploma of Building Surveying to gain registration as a Building Inspector. For the past 8 years Jeff has been self employed as a building consultant, specializing in domestic construction, and is studying a Diploma of Building Surveying.

After obtaining double degrees from the University of Melbourne, Paul has spent considerable amount of time participating on both local and international projects, working across all facets of the building construction industry including Domestic, Civil, Commercial, Land Subdivision and Property Development in both Private and Public Sectors. Through his career, Paul has being appointed as Estimator, Contract Administrator, Project Manager, Client Side Project Manager, Senior Project Manager, Chief Estimator, Project Director and had held various Company Directorship. His Roles have seen him successfully deliver a portfolio of diverse and complex projects and developments His most recent appointment has being Project Director at one of the Fastest growing company Greenland Holding Group Currently rank 202 in the Global Fortune 500 list, and worked on their tallest residential tower in Sydney known as “Greenland Centre” currently under construction and will stand 235m tall. Paul joined Codicote as Director in 2018 is also a director at a construction consultancy firm Pi Projects.

Neil Coulter is the Owner and Director of Mortar Life Quality Builders P/L which has been operating since 2006 and specialises in Knockdown & Rebuilding of new homes and architectural renovations and Extensions. With over 25 years industry experience Neil is a member of the Master Builders Housing Committee and has been a member of the Master Builders Victoria for 15 years. Mortar Life Quality Builders also has a Green Living Accreditation. Neil is also a Trainer and Building Consultant through his association and membership of the Australian Institute of Building Consultants.

Tony has in excess of 40 years experience in all facets of domestic building, both ‘hands on’ and in management positions. He is a carpenter by trade and for approximately 20 years ran his own company specialising in boutique construction and in particular period extensions renovations with a team of between five and 12 carpenters. Tony spent the next 10 years or so working with both smaller boutique builders and volume builders in the roles of Building Site Manager, Quality Assurance Manager, Warranty Services Manager, Construction Manager, and Metropolitan Building Manager. Tony spent the following eight years as a building consultant with one of Melbourne’s largest and most respected building consultancies, initially as a consultant and then as senior consultant. In July 2011, Tony started the consulting practice of Tony Croucher and Associates. As a Consultant, Tony specialises in domestic construction and is mostly involved in litigation matters before the Courts or VCAT. He regularly appears as an expert witness and has given evidence in all levels of the Courts and VCAT.

Neil commenced work in the industry as and apprentice carpenter working on high rise construction in Melbourne. After completing his apprenticeship and gaining some extra years experience he moved into working in domestic construction of new homes and renovations. During the late 80s Neil worked in local government as a building Inspector before becoming a Municipal Building Surveyor. When private certification was introduced in Victoria Neil worked with the MBAV as the private Building Surveyor to start a building permit service for members before moving on to become the National Technical Director for the Master Builders Australia representing Australia’s Master Builders on the Australian Building Codes committee and represented MBA members on over 23 Australian Standards Committees. His last role was Executive Director of another industry group overseeing to regions overall operations including policy, Government Liaison, management of the regional board, overseeing the business units and media.

Geoffrey is a highly experienced architect having worked for over 40 years in the masterplanning and detailed design of major projects, urban spaces, multi-storey office buildings, schools and community buildings, single family homes and multi-unit residential buildings. He has extensive experience in areas of complex heritage issues and has also designed many sustainable buildings, residential, community and commercial, from some of the early buildings with passive and active sustainability features in the nineteen seventies, through to the present time. He is a strategic thinker with a sophisticated knowledge of architectural planning, detailed design, contemporary aesthetics and practiced environmental design skills and often works with other architectural practices in the development of masterplans and building concepts. Geoffrey has a great capacity to visualise and develop conceptual solutions for a wide array of project types and his visualizations are locally and internationally acknowledged as being highly successful in communicating to the public and stakeholder groups the key design criteria in planning and design.

Stephen is a qualified and registered domestic and commercial builder, with 30 years experience in both realms. His construction company covers all elements of major structural aspects of single, multi-level developments and refurbishments. Stephen has a particular skill sets in civil and all areas structural design and construction (timber steel and concrete) works, and has significant and vast experience with new buildings and major extension works. He has a particular interest in difficult builds, period restoration and sustainability. Stephen is currently studying Diploma in Building & Construction (Building) & Diploma in Building & Construction (Management).

Efy is currently the General Manager of the Victorian Government’s Domestic Building Insurance (DBI) Program responsible for the strategic direction and operational management of this mandatory insurance product that insures over 16,000 builders annually. Having completed a Construction Management degree at RMIT University and worked for a number of Melbourne’s leading building companies, Efy has extensive experience in commercial and residential building projects. Efy is a Past President of the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Building and was the first female appointed to this position, as well as being an Adjunct Fellow (Building and Construction) at Holmesglen Institute. In 2011 Efy was awarded the prestigious NAWIC Crystal Vision Award for the advancement of the interests of women in the construction industry. This recognised her contributions through professional roles in the building industry and on State and Federal Boards. In 2017, Efy led the transformation of the DBI service delivery model to the domestic building industry. This was underpinned by the successful launch of a new digital IT platform, “BuildVic” that provides builders with access to cover 24/7. Importantly, it resulted in a 20% reduction in the cost of insurance premiums to builders and enables homeowners to access information portals and online claims lodgement tools.

In 1977 Rob’s building career commenced working for McDougal Ireland as an estimator’s clerk and contract administrator. This experience encouraged him to obtain formal qualifications; he studied at RMIT where he achieved a Diploma of Building (with Distinction) in 1982. In 1983 Rob formed Faulkner Lees Constructions Pty Ltd, initially as an onsite project management company providing services to numerous developers mainly specialising in commercial and industrial projects. Design and construction projects, in light commercial, professional suites, new homes and domestic renovations and extensions. In the early 1990’s as well as being a registered Builder and Draftsman Rob completed a Graduate Diploma in Property at RMIT. Between 1997 and 2017 Building Consultancy was the primary source of business for Faulkner Lees Constructions Pty Ltd. Rob was equally engaged by Builders and Owners, he prepared expert witness reports and regularly appeared at tribunals as an expert witness. Rob has been a member of the MBAV for over 25 years and is past President of the Australian Society of Building Consultants (Vic).

Diploma Project Management (Swinburne), Diploma in Building & Construction, Diploma of Management (Building Academy), Associate Diploma Architectural Drafting (NMIT) Registered Building Practitioner BDAV Full Member Max Loche has been at the forefront of Victorian home design for the past 23 years. After owning and operating his own design and drafting business, Max joined Metricon where he began as a Project Designer and quickly escalated to Project Manager - Developments, where he was responsible for the delivery of medium density product from concept to completion. A four year period as Victorian Products Manager at Burbank provided a stepping stone to his current position at Victoria’s leading builder Simonds. Today, Max acts as National Products Range Manager, a position he has held for 8 years. Superintending the Products Department and with offices in Victoria, Queensland, South Australia & New South Wales, Max is responsible for Product Innovation and delivery of Product on all aspects of the business by the award-winning builder.

Bob is a Building Consultant with a total of 38 years building industry experience in design, documentation, estimating, supervision and construction. Worked and trained as an architectural draftsman and Clerk of Works from 1974 to 1978 on mainly large commercial and industrial projects including shopping centres, supermarkets, factories and office buildings. From 1978 to 1980 worked on design and sales of Kit Homes and other mid-level projects. From 1980 to 1990 worked as a Volume Builder Supervisor, Contracts Manager and Estimator. He has been involved in general building consulting since 1985 through John Coghlan & Associates Pty Ltd, then as a partner in Coghlan Lorich Associates Pty Ltd which became Buildspect & Co Pty Ltd from 1990 until October 2010. Former part owner and director of Buildspect & Co Pty Ltd. Bob is also a Registered Building Practitioner (retired Commercial and Domestic Builder). In 2011 formed Australiawide Building Consultancy. Currently the building consulting practice involves contract documentation and assessment, preparation of quantities and costing, expert witness, project management and quality supervision of commercial, industrial and residential projects. Mediation and Dispute resolution services are provided frequently for parties to a building contract. He appears regularly at V.C.A.T, County and Supreme Courts.

Gary commenced in the building industry as an apprentice carpenter in St. Arnaud, North Central Victoria where quality workmanship was the key to securing your next project. During the 80’s and 90’s Gary was self employed working on new homes, renovations, extensions and some smaller commercial projects. In 1993 Gary joined the Master Builders Association of Victoria attaining the role of membership manager in 1995 until 2005. Since leaving the association Gary has run his own successful building consultancy business ‘GeeMac Building Services P/L’ which is still operating successfully today.

Christopher McSteen is a Director of McSteen Tan Architects, an inner city architectural firm dealing in a number of design areas including new housing, town house developments, housing renovations and additions, school buildings, commercial offices, factories and Town Planning applications. His office projects vary enormously and range in size from $20M - $0.5M. Whilst Chris’s work has mainly been in Victoria, he has also spent several years overseas working in America and Italy on a range of design projects from high rise residential to urban design, to tourist related facilities. His interest in Italian architecture – classical and modern – takes him back to study in Italy every 1-2 years. He was involved as the Design Architect with several TV stations, Channel 7 and Channel 9, for a series of Architectural Programmes: Channel 7, 2004 – ‘The Terraces’ and Channel 9, 2013 – ‘The Tyler Fishlock Home’. He has received a number of design awards, including most recently in 2014, the Urban Design Award from Boroondara Council for Best Heritage Conservation, Additions and Alterations. He has acted as Architectural Lecturer at public forums for Environmental Design Seminars at Playbox and Sustainable Design Seminars at BMW Edge, Federation Square. His work has been published in a variety of areas including Home Beautiful, Kitchens and Bathrooms, RAIA Awards and The Age. He is a member of a number of Architectural and Building Associations including Australian Institute of Architects as an Associate Member and Archicentre as a Member and Panel member VSCC.

Mort has been a building consultant for over 20 years, where he has worked in arbitrations, building disputes, pre-purchase, building reports, and all matters relating to building construction. As a builder, Mort has been responsible for the construction of over 10,000 dwellings in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and has been Managing Director of a major building company for forty years. He served as President of Master Builders Association of Victoria and was Victorian President (Housing) of the Federal Master Builders, and Housing Advisor to the Australian Government. In his time in the Air Force he trained as an engineer. Mort is an experienced arbitrator and mediator and also appears as an Expert Witness at VCAT.

An interest in cities and the way in which people live their lives motivated Pamela to pursue a career in urban planning. With 25 years’ experience, she has worked on a wide variety of projects in both the public and private sectors as well as teaching to inspire the next generation of urban thinkers. Pamela’s passion for story telling prompted her to specialise in heritage planning and urban renewal so that she may be part of the telling of Melbourne’s own story. Other professional interests include urban design and the resilience of our cities to adapt and grow despite shocks and stresses. Pam’s own story expands well beyond that of urban planning; taking a hiatus to launch her own boutique sleepwear brand – Nightshift. The role as creative Director and Designer at Nightshift utilised her project management skills, which are strongly connected to her planning persona. When Pamela is not engrossed reading a copy of the Master Builders Association of Victoria magazine, she can be found planning her next renovation project.

David has been involved in the Building and Construction industry since completing a Degree in Civil Engineering at Monash University in 1971. After over 20 years in project management in commercial building with projects including the Reserve Bank Note Printing Works at Craigieburn and the Melbourne Central Project, he moved to residential building as Victorian Building Manager for AVJennings in 1992. In 1997 he joined with two other partners for a management buyout of Stonehaven Homes where he remained until his retirement in 2016. Stonehaven Homes is an architectural design and construction company involved in inner suburban residential housing. David’s involvement with Master Builders extends back to receiving industrial advice in the late 1970’s. His main involvement occurred when he joined the housing sector committee in 1992. He was elected chairman soon thereafter and served on the state council from that time. Following eight years on the Board of Management he became President from 2008 to 2010. David served for eight years on the Building Practitioners Board from 2000 to 2008 and continued as a co-opted member until the Board was disbanded in 2016. He has served on the CoINVEST (building industry long service leave fund) board since being elected in 2011. David has enjoyed his time in the building industry and has recently joined the Victorian Small Business Mentoring Service as a volunteer to share his experience with others.

After completing Architecture, Michael worked with Graeme Gunn and Merchant Builders for nine years from 1970 - 79. In 1981, he established the Design & Construct Company of Urban Spaces in 1981 and registered as both Builder and Architect. The Company specialised in building restoration, custom housing and domestic alterations for 28 years. Over this period the Company won 12 Master Builders Awards for their projects. Michael became a member of the Master Builders Association of Victoria in 1983 and graduated from the Housing Committee in 1988 to Council and Board member in 1995. Michael was President of the Master Builders Association of Victoria from 2000 – 2002 and participated on the National Housing Board from 2000 – 2004. In 2004 Michael was awarded Life Membership to the Master Builders Association of Victoria.

Philip commenced in the family building business in 1973, with the task of learning the family building business established in 1955 under the guidance of his late father, principal and founder of John E Robinson, Master Builder. Additional studies after graduating as an accountant included Building Construction 1-3, Industry courses in estimating, management and leadership. During the 1970s – 1990s he was contracted to PWD & Ministry of Housing in the public sector for construction of Housing Estates, Schools, travelling widely from Colac to Hamilton in Western Victoria from our base at Camperdown. Whilst in the private sector many projects, included public halls, banks, factories, churches, new residences and home renovations. His focus is currently on project management, consultancy and design of client’s projects and his involvement with Master Builders commenced in 1978, representing the Western Section of Victoria on the newly established Country Section Committee leading to representation on Council of Management on 24th August 1981 and continue to serve as the longest member to Council of Management in 2019.

David is a Registered Domestic and Commercial Builder and Architectural Draftsman. His interest in the building industry began as a young school boy about 45 years ago when he worked with his father. He has kept that interest alive and is currently the Managing Director of not one but two companies. The first is a building company, Bond Homes, which completes around 80 homes a year across regional Victoria. The second a building design business, D.R. Design, which completes approximately 300 design jobs a year. In his time in the building industry David estimates that he has constructed over 3,000 homes and had more than 5,000 drafting clients. David is an active member of the Master Builders Association of Victoria. He is currently Vice President of the Master Builders Association of Ballarat and also attends monthly country sector meetings at the Master Builders Association of Victoria. David is also involved in various local Ballarat sporting groups at both committee and executive level. He has a particular interest in period architecture having lived in and brought back to life many properties in Ballarat. He enjoys completing sympathetic extensions to period homes to allow the modern open plan living his clients expect today. Having been the recipient of several MBAV Housing Awards in the past it has been an enjoyable experience for David to be a first-time judge.

Chris is an active member of the building industry for the last 42 years, beginning his apprenticeship in the Latrobe Valley back in 1977, worked in multiple roles within the industry over that time. On the completion of Chris’ apprenticeship he worked for himself doing renovations and new homes. He met his wife-to-be and followed her to Bendigo in 1986. In 1988 he joined the AV Jennings team as a supervisor before moving across to Glen Loddon Homes as a supervisor/maintenance manager in 1990. Geelong-based Larkin and Drought Builders created this cleverly-designed home. The concrete walls are the main feature of the home and have been carefully and neatly constructed. A salt and pepper finished concrete slab was poured over the hydronic heating. Joinery was made from American Oak veneer and sprayed in a clear satin finish, cupboards doors and panels used throughout to match the ceiling linings. A custom brass pendant was designed and constructed to be the central piece above the dining area. Spotted Gum decking was laid around the pool and alfresco area. Kitchen benchtops were poured in place and then polished. Overlooking the Barwon River, the clever design of this home by the Auhaus Architecture has the upper floors overhanging, to create the eaves and alfresco ceiling above the barbeque area. Curved walls were used to soften the overall look, while three-metre high glass panels allow the swimming pool to be viewed from inside the house. Internally the adults and childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s areas are separated by a perforated steel walk bridge, but not isolated. The huge rumpus room was designed for three kids and includes timber study desks and plenty of play area for visiting friends. The project was a challenge with the installation of new floor beams and the cutting out of the webbing and supporting rafters completed while the clients were living in the space below. Each bedroom has extensive floor space to fit within the roof area with raked ceilings that mirror each other. The rumpus room at the top of the stairs leads to a beautifully appointed bathroom. The placement of the windows cleverly captures light and warms the space during winter, with eaves offering protection during summer, while letting plenty of natural light into the rooms.

Attic Magic’ honours a child’s imagination with a joyful roof-space renovation atop a Melbourne heritage home. The Brutalist-inspired, light-filled design of this transformation was brought to life though recycled and new materials. Quality was key to bring the design of the master ensuite to life. The construction and materials used needed to be of the highest standard, as would be expected in a luxury hotel. All cabinetry was made in the Grollo Homesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; joinery workshop with an American Walnut trim and assembled on-site by carpenters. The floor and benchtops were made from a combination of Pietra Grigio and Statuario marble, with bronze mirror-coated glass used on the walls of the ensuite. The use of bronze glass was reprised to cleverly separate the wardrobe area from the ensuite, creating the look and feel of a luxury boudoir. Black and chrome Milli Axon fittings add the perfect finishing touch.

From a building family, Bill began his apprenticeship in 1970 with Ross and Smith Builders. In 1975 he transferred to John W. Henderson P/L working on commercial and industrial projects. In 1980 Bill commenced as Site Foreman with Ron Alexander Builders P/L mainly on commercial projects.

Chris completed an apprenticeship with H.F.Yuncken in Melbourne in 1970 followed by training in Estimating and Project Management.

Bill began his career as assistant Building Surveyor I Inspector in 1985 with the Borough of Eaglehawk and The Shire of Huntly on a shared time basis. After 10 years he joined the Master Builders Association of Victoria as a building inspector for the Bendigo region, shortly after the Victorian government introduced private Surveyors/ Inspectors to Victoria. Bill has been involved with the MBAV golf days, judging “Apprentice of the Year” awards and various other member activities. Married with three children, eight grandchildren, Bill enjoys an active lifestyle playing golf, bike riding, fishing and outback touring. Now retired, Bill has been a judge since 2012.

In 1974 a move to Bendigo saw Chris take up the position of Area Manager. After gaining valuable experience, Chris established Morey and Hurford Master Builders in 1991. The company specialised in medium to large commercial work throughout central Victoria, employing an average of 40 people during his 18 years in business. Chris retired in 2009 but has not slowed down; with a 12 acre property he grows olive trees and Winning numerous area and Regional Master Builders Awards.Chris retired in 2009 but occupies his time maintaining his 12 arce property, producing excellence shiraz wine and olive oil.He continues his active interest in breeding and racing thoroughbreds, visiting many local and international racing venues.8 grandchildren all living in Victoria, keep Chris and his wife Lyn, occupied with family visits to the farm. Chris has maintained an interest in the building scene assisting the local Grammar school in Bendigo as a building consultant; and has maintained a domestic unlimited and commercial licence and is presently assisting his son-in-law with the setup of his own building company in Melbourne also A member of Master Builders Association of Victoria since 1970, this was Chris’ eight year judging the Regional Building Awards.

Tony has in excess of 40 years experience in all facets of domestic building, both ‘hands on’ and in management positions.

The founder of Pivot homes, a custom design and construction company building on the surf coast for over 25 years, Austin has himself been the recipient of over 50 awards including Building Designer of the Year and Builder of the Year.

He is a carpenter by trade and for approximately 20 years ran his own company specialising in boutique construction and in particular period extensions renovations with a team of between five and 12 carpenters. Tony spent the next 10 years or so working with both smaller boutique builders and volume builders in the roles of Building Site Manager, Quality Assurance Manager, Warranty Services Manager, Construction Manager, and Metropolitan Building Manager. Tony spent the following eight years as a building consultant with one of Melbourne’s largest and most respected building consultancies, initially as a consultant and then as senior consultant. In July 2011, Tony started the consulting practice of Tony Croucher and Associates. As a Consultant, Tony specialises in domestic construction and is mostly involved in litigation matters before the Courts or VCAT. He regularly appears as an expert witness and has given evidence in all levels of the Courts and VCAT.

Austin has served as a past chairman of the western district Master Builders Association of Victoria country housing and Apprentice of the Year committees. He is also a member of the surf coast planning committee and was a member of the Geelong land committee for some time. Having recently retired, Austin is now finding time to return to the water. As a keen sailor, he and his wife, Jan, have sailed their yacht up to the Whitsundays. He also enjoys water skiing, snow skiing and golf. Austin was delighted to this year take on the challenge of judging these awards.

Peter has over 35 years experience in planning, design and construction, having held senior executive roles in both the public and private sectors.

David joined the Building Industry in 1959 as an apprentice. After completion, he spent the next 16 years self employed with three apprentices.

As Business Development/Design Manager for Devco Project and Construction Management, Peter develops and implements business growth and marketing strategies. Peter joined Devco in 2013 after several years in similar roles with major commercial construction Contractors.

He worked on extensions, renovations and new homes, as well as Government contracts, major restoration projects in Mt Macedon and Toorak.

Angelo Inguanti entered into the building industry in 1965 as a young carpenter apprentice, after leaving the family market gardening business, to carry out cabinetry, framing, lockup and fixings and progressed to become a registered builder in 1983. Angelo has built more than 250 homes as a sole trader within the metropolitan area and Bellarine Peninsula.

He joined the Master Builders in August 1981. Along with Barry Partridge, David was involved in the Master Builders Group Scheme until BIGS took it over.

Now retired at Point Lonsdale, Angelo gives much more time to enjoying his family and grandchildren and travelling around Australia and Europe with his wife, Antoinette.

Geoffrey is highly experienced as an architect specializing in the master planning and design of major projects, urban spaces, and large scale public facilities. He has extensive experience in integrated community projects, design for the community and arts and complex heritage issues. He has also practiced environmentally sustainable design since the 1970â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and is a strategic thinker with a sophisticated knowledge of architectural planning and contemporary aesthetics and practiced environmental design skills.

Previously Peter was the Victorian Director of a national architectural practice where he was leading a team of architects, interior designers, planners and urban designers on construction and related consultancy projects. Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experience in capital works planning, project development and design management are services he provides to clients as part of his role at Devco Project and Construction Management. Peter holds a Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Engineering (Project Management). He has been a judge with the Master Builders for the Regional Building Awards since 2009.

David went on to work in the Membership department, servicing members in Gippsland and the North East of the State. David ran seminars on several issues including the introduction of HGFL, 5 Star, Building Practitioners Board, Warranty Insurance, RES Code, GST, Red card, and spoke on Industry topics at Trade Nights. David joined CBus in 2005 on a 12 month contract to help with the introduction of choice to the Building Industry, where employees can choose between retail and industry funds. This turned into a full time position and after seven years David is now enjoying retirement.

Throughout his career Geoffrey has been commissioned to design, document and project manage many one family custom designed houses, project houses and multi-unit residential projects. Geoffrey has a great capacity to visualise and develop conceptual solutions for a wide array of project types. His visualizations are locally and internationally acknowledged as being highly successful in communicating to the public and stakeholder groups the key design criteria in planning and urban design.

The project was designed to replace the outdated original section of the home with an attractive, light filled and practical space, providing sleeping quarters and wash rooms to complement the living and kitchen areas. Solar passive design was a large consideration in the orientation of the building. The form and scale of the building was to complement the existing living section with the roof pitch, shape and materials matched to the existing dwelling; the wall cladding is a blend of corrugated galvanised iron and coloured render, which is a continuation of the existing external. The corrugated iron was both a cost saving exercise as well as a low maintenance cladding which works well in the rural setting.

The project brief was to build a modest but chic holiday home at the base of Mt Buller to accommodate two families. It had to be low maintenance and be able to withstand the harsh winters and hot summers of this climate. The design takes advantage of the wonderful views of both Mt Stirling and Mt Buller. Built on two levels, it features two master bedrooms with ensuites and private living space upstairs with expansive indoor and outdoor living overlooking the mountains on the ground floor. The lower level was cut into the earth to provide stability and protection from the elements, as well as staying within the building envelope.

Each chalet consists of a ground level garage with main entry, drying rooms and ski storage. There are three levels above each consisting of a three-bedroom apartment with ensuites, expansive living and dining zones accented with feature fireplaces and external terraces to the north. The apartments are accessed via stairs and lift and each has electric panel heating and double glazing. Each chalet has angulated roofs with snowguards and heat trace elements for the control of snowshed.

The scope of works set out by the owners was detailed and precise. First and foremost was to deliver a home that was solar efficient; fully off the grid and self-sustainable but also at a realistic and affordable price. Much planning went into its position on the site with a “twisted roof” structure to the gable on the eastern side of the central ridge; the Northern aspect for this home is optimised with the major axis running east –west, promoting excellent passive design features. The building’s thick, “double skinned” external walls are covered in a combination of metal cladding with feature areas of Corten steel and timber features. The protective rammed earth wall at the entrance gives hint to the significant thermal mass embodied within this ultimately comfortable home.

The design evolved from EcoTecture Design Group executing the ownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s design, external facade ideas and orientation of rooms, to maximise the sweeping views of the Murray River. The builder was able to guide them through a number of decisions to simplify the plan which would allow them to build a home within their budget without compromising on build quality, fixtures and fittings. External facades were carefully executed to ensure a pleasing and quality finish was achieved. From the sharp zinc bricks, which blend perfectly with the River Red Gums, to the rich, red hues of ironbark, the structure was finished with a matrix painted in Dulux Monument colour to also blend with the environment. The addition of the floor-to-ceiling windows and raked ceiling let light in and create the illusion of the room being much larger than it is.

A lounge was added in lieu of the existing decking and two new bedrooms were added. A large decking area running down the middle of the dwelling became the entertainment area and is accessed from both the dining and the lounge through French doors.

The detail and execution of this project was second to none, with care and pride for the project provided from start to finish. There were five separate materials used on the external walls with each requiring a different specialist trade. Parquetry flooring throughout the main living areas and marble panelling on the bathroom walls adds an appeal of luxury, as does the four-piece, book-ended panel of marble found underneath the suspended fireplace. Curved walls in the gallery and bedrooms made for interesting features to further highlight the stunning outdoor views.

The concrete walls are the main feature of the home and have been carefully and neatly constructed, the salt and pepper finished concrete slab was poured over the hydronic heating. Joinery was made from American oak veneer and sprayed in a clear satin finish, cupboards doors and panels were chosen to match the ceiling linings. Ceiling and wall linings are mitred and return up to the void height of 7m. A custom brass pendant was designed and constructed to be the central piece above the dining area. Spotted Gum decking was layed around the pool and alfresco area. Kitchen benchtops were poured in place and then polished. Culcutta Marble splashbacks were used as a contrast and the theme was continued into the wet areas for benchtops.

The use of Native sustainable timber Blackbutt fins down the north side of the building is matched in the decking and the theme is also carried on into the open plan kitchen living area, with matching engineered blackbutt flooring and Blackbutt kitchen doors, with concealed pantry door. It was also decided to create a beautiful feature ceiling out of Blackbutt lining boards that runs the full length of the home. The use of extensive green roof areas above the garage and second storey bedrooms will help the building blend in with its natural surroundings.

It also features rammed earth walls which help control the temperature and noise. The insulated concrete slab naturally contributes to sustainability, in summer it acts as a cooling element benefiting from the earths near-constant low temperature and can improve thermal comfort by absorbing radiant heat from the occupants and appliances.
