NSW President’s foreword
Building more opportunities than any other industry
T
his publication recognises and celebrates what is best about our industry. The magazine showcases the built environment and its contribution to the social fabric of the community, something we should all be very proud of. It is worth noting the building and construction sector engages, and gives more opportunities to small businesses than any other industry in Australia. Our industry is the largest employer of full-time employees and trains more apprentices than any other industry. This year our industry produced magnificent quality and exceptional level of construction. The judges conducted onsite inspections of projects worth over $500M in the Newcastle and Hunter regions, and were thrilled with the level of skill and professionalism displayed by the industry.
On behalf of The Master Builders Association of NSW, I offer my congratulations to all the entrants and winners. I thank the judges, who I might add, freely donate their time and expertise to examine, evaluate, deliberate and make very difficult decisions when considering all entries received. I thank the sponsors who not only support the industry, but also the Awards Presentation. Once again congratulations on your success.

LET’S TALK SAFETY Newcastle Master Builders Apprenticeship Scheme’s goal is to provide Builders and Contractors with quality apprentices and trainees at an affordable cost and easy management!
Inspectors will be visiting construction sites state-wide throughout January and February 2022, to talk with principal contractors and site supervisors about silica dust and mental health risks.
We employ apprentices and trainees and then place them with you for as long as you need them. We take care of the associated paperwork, wages, allowances, workers compensation, superannuation etc, while all you have to do is focus on getting your project done! All the while, we provide continual and dedicated support for both our apprentices and you, the Host Employer.
Construction work can lead to the creation of silica dust which may cause serious long term illnesses or death if not managed correctly, and Mental ill-health is a “real” and serious problem in the building and construction industry. To find out more, see our newly updated building and construction industry safety page on the SafeWork NSW website.

This criteria requests that each entrant be 40 years of age or younger, that the applicant be a Licensed Builder and can demonstrate, by way of written evidence, that they have maintained quality of workmanship and a strong respect for safety standards on all of their projects. The entrants need to demonstrate to the judges, by way of written evidence, that they have continually produced quality buildings and have references from satisfied clients and peers. SORENSEN & CALDON BUILDERS The Manhattan This home was purposely designed for orientation and privacy. Sorensen & Caldon applied great safety measures when facing the onsite challenges. This single storey design required ¾ of its mass to be scaffolded and the very large lengths of roofing material required craning onto the roof, long runs of raked ceilings, finnicky skylight installs, and hoisting 1200 x 600 tiles for the ceiling. The home, with a small roof cavity for Air conditioning also made designing the AC challenging. The nature of this home meant quite a lot of fine detailed laborious carpentry work, especially in the entry and the front door, ensuring the shiplap lined up perfectly and seamlessly. This project took place on a street where 25 other builders were trying to build their display homes, which resulted in no access, constant delays and a situation further exacerbated by supply issues caused by Covid-19. Despite the many challenges, the end result is spectacular.

Milleen’s were required to support and remove existing reinforced footings and replace them with large “Cruciform” footings. This involved temporary supports for the towers and removal of footings. During this time the entire power grid was still active. New footings of approximately 450 – 500m3 were poured. This was carried out to allow for long wall mining below ground and to ensure the stability of the towers in the immediate area.

A W EDWARDS Mid Coast Council, Taree Phone: 02 9958 1474 Design: Group GSA The refurbishment and alterations of an existing retail warehouse has given The Mid Coast Council an extremely modern, user-friendly environment, not only for the employees but for the general community. A huge amount of planning and design was carried out prior to starting. Internal structural strengthening was required to allow for suspended services throughout the large void area above the main office floor space. Walkways linking all services above make for easy maintenance and repairs. Raised floor sections within the design has created service voids which also allowed various functions a separate identity. A W Edwards has achieved an extremely high level of acoustic performance throughout the refurbishment. This was noted during onsite testing. A W Edwards ensured a very high percentage of local trades and suppliers were engaged to carry out the work, which at the time of uncertainty due to the pandemic gave a great boost to the local economy.

LET’S TALK SAFETY LET’S TALK SAFETY
SafeWork NSW Executive Director, Tony Williams, has announced that inspectors will be visiting construction sites state-wide throughout January and February 2022, to talk with principal contractors and site supervisors about silica dust and mental health risks. Silica dust is deadly Most sand is made up of quartz which is another name for silica. Because sand is used in so many building products, silica dust can be found on nearly all construction sites. When you cut, grind or drill concrete, bricks, or sandstone you can breathe in large amounts of very fine silica dust, which can be deadly. Principal contractors and builders have a duty to provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risks to health and safety, so far as is reasonably practicable. This includes having safe systems of work and the correct safety equipment, such as water or on-tool dust capture, when working with products/materials containing silica. Mental ill-health in construction Mental ill-health is a “real” and serious problem in the building and construction industry. Whilst not all mental ill-health is caused at work, employers have responsibilities under work health and safety laws to ensure that workplace mental health hazards (also called psychosocial hazards) are effectively managed. This includes having the appropriate systems in place to identify, consult and manage psychosocial hazards such as; not tolerating bullying or violence, not having unreasonable deadlines, giving clear instructions, and ensuring a physically safe working environment. Get the facts To find out more about what you can do to reduce the risks of silica dust exposure and mental ill-health at work, see our newly updated building and construction industry safety page on the SafeWork NSW website. Here you will find toolbox talks, safety checklists and fact sheets on silica and mental health risks. Small construction businesses can also learn more about our $500 small business rebate program, register for an online safety workshop, listen to a SafetyCAST, or access other construction specific simple safety tools.

SafeWork NSW
LET’S TALK SAFETY
