“All that glistens is not gold...”
I
’m reminded of William Shakespeare’s legendary advice from The Merchant of Venice:
All that glistens is not gold — Often have you heard that told. This year’s Commercial Master Builder of the Year is Vaughan Constructions. The building that earned them that award is now the largest coatings factory in Australia and New Zealand — a project at ground level so immense and utilitarian and, well, white, its builders had to send a camera dozens of metres skyward to find a perspective that tells its story on the printed page. It’s ironic that such a resolutely monochromatic building houses Dulux, a company that distinguishes itself by the spectrum of vivid colour it makes possible for other buildings. But let me be clear: I like the message this year’s selection sends — that a building doesn’t have to host gladiatorial sports battles, house a distinguished collection of books, or capture the zeitgeist of a bachelor of arts degree to be an industry-leading project. This one wins because it expresses remarkable craftsmanship in the way its components come together, and that includes people and processes as much as parts. Well done, Vaughan. This marks our eighth year at Crown Palladium for the Excellence in Construction Awards, an annual review and celebration of projects that have reached completion during the previous 12 months. All are of high quality, and each one is important. At this event in particular, projects join a long and distinguished tradition of construction excellence in Victoria. Your participation is stronger this year than last, with
nearly 100 projects submitted to our judges and events team to survey and evaluate. The broad and exceptional construction talent we enjoy this evening is a vivid demonstration of how much our industry contributes to the health of our economy and the quality of life we enjoy in Victoria. We also congratulate DAS Construction as Regional Master Builder of the Year for their work on Newhaven College Stage 1 Senior Learning Centre and Specialist Facility in Rhyll. It’s another project that reveals its merits on the inside, leaving the exterior to play a supporting role to the sky and landscape. And we commend Marco Bonadio from Kane Constructions, who wins the title of Young Builder of the Year. He is an accomplished, composed, professional builder who is driven by complex building challenges.

Dulux Merrifield Coatings Plant, Mickleham www.vaughans.com.au Watson Young Architects Nick Billings, Nick Billings Photography
A complex build, the Dulux Merrifield Coating Plant impresses in its design and delivery. The driving factor for the selection and detail of finishes was longevity in a harsh chemical based environment. The facility uses a compressed air system to pump the core materials required in the paint production process through stainless steel lines throughout the entire facility. To facilitate this a compressor room is located on the northern end of the facility. A VESDA system has been installed in the Production and Mezzaine areas of the building. Due to the propensity for detection systems to be exposed to high levels of dust, a reflected beam smoke detection system was chosen for the Powders Hall, which utilises mirrors and optical beams for detection. A gas compression system is installed in the power substation and standard smoke and thermal detection systems are used throughout the remainder of the facility. 16 MASTER BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA EXCELLENCE IN CONSTRUCTION AWARDS 2018

The unusual solid-aluminium cladding distinguishes the new Science & Technology Hub at the Melbourne Grammar School. The internal arrangement accommodates new and emerging pedagogies by being highly flexible, transparent, and efficient in its organisation. It is characterised by broader settings for teaching and learning; spaces that enable collaborative teaching; and blurred distinctions between formal and informal learning. Spaces are connected via a learning commons atrium, at the heart of the building and a sculptural curved staircase with views through the atrium to the oval and school campus beyond.

This project was designed and developed to adhere to the predefined production and distribution methodologies - including automated processing equipment - to produce paint. The production hall includes basement excavation for calcium carbonate silos, disperser units and plates, with a raised mezzanine level allowing access to the tank openings. Powders and tints required to create the paints are transferred to the production hall. Once mixing is complete, the paint solution is piped, using compressed air, to the filling hall where a further automated process transfers the final liquid product into cans. From here the cans are picked and packed, ready for transport. MASTER BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA EXCELLENCE IN CONSTRUCTION AWARDS 2018 35

The purpose-built childcare centre consists of eight individual age-based educational rooms, a parents’ retreat, reception, office area and a full commercial kitchen and laundry. Constructed predominately with Cross Laminated Timber and some minor steel-cast elements, some of the benefits include lighter building foundations, high material accuracy through factory prefabrication and a smaller site-construction team. Fast assembly compresses the building program, and offers an earlier occupancy opportunity with shorter financing requirements. Sustainability factors include no site waste disposal and life cycle savings with owners increasingly concerned with operational costs and sustainability which have become market drivers. 38 MASTER BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA EXCELLENCE IN CONSTRUCTION AWARDS 2018

A significant development, providing a counterpoint to typically uniform, residential towers, with a nest of bespoke individual dwellings. Acknowledgement of the local landscape is present in the reimaging and modernisation of the building’s brickwork – a material ubiquitous in the area. Concrete hoists are expressed to the balconies and internal living areas provide the occupant with a sense of space and a tactile connection with the building’s materiality. Upper level balconies introduce a layering of brick elements to incorporate planting, emulating the ‘terra firma’ experience. Deep openings in the facade elaborate on the idea of decoupling adjoining units, providing occupants a sense of space and individuality. Angelo Inguanti entered into the building industry as a young carpenter apprentice in 1965 after leaving the family market gardening business to carry out cabinetry, framing, lockup and fixings and progressed to become a registered builder in 1983. Angelo has built more than 250 homes as a sole trader within the metropolitan area and Bellarine Peninsula.
Born and breed in Geelong, Ian completed a Carpentry & Joinery apprenticeship in 1958 mainly building houses & maintenance. After meeting the love of his life in Hobart after a yacht race, Ian and his wife set up home in Hobart and set about building Spec homes until 1977 when the desire for some warmer weather brought about a move to the Gold Coast where he continued with Spec Building. In 1980 Ian returned to his home town of Geelong where he continued building now with the help of his two sons.
Chris completed an apprenticeship with H.F. Yuncken in Melbourne in 1970, followed by training in Estimating and Project Management. In 1974 Chris took the position of Area Manager in Bendigo.
Peter has over 35 years experience in capital works development and construction having held senior roles in both the public and private sectors. Peter is the Business Development Manager for Devco Project and Construction Management where he is responsible for pre-construction business and marketing strategies. Ian has been retired for 13 years enjoying quality time with his wife which includes sailing in the summer and an annual caravan holiday to Queensland for 3 months during the chilly winter months.
Chris retired in 2009 but has not slowed down; with a 12 acre property he grows olive trees and Shiraz grapes, has many alpacas and a keen and active interest in breeding and racing thoroughbreds. With six grandchildren across different states, Chris and his wife enjoy catching up with their family and travelling. Chris has maintained an interest in the building industry, assisting the local Grammar school in Bendigo as a building consultant. He has maintained a domestic unlimited and commercial licence and is presently assisting his son-in-law with the setup of his own building company. A member of Master Builders Association of Victoria since 1970, this is his seventh year judging the Regional Building Awards.

DAVID MCMATH SOUTH EAST REGION
BILL MILLER SOUTH WEST REGION
BRIAN MACSWEENEY SOUTH WEST REGION
AUSTIN SWAIN SOUTH WEST REGION
David joined the Building Industry in 1959 as an apprentice. After completion he spent the next 16 years self employed, with three apprentices.
Married with three children and eight grandchildren, Bill enjoys an active lifestyle playing golf, bike riding, fishing and touring the outback.
Starting an apprenticeship in carpentry at just 14 years of age, Brian spent 53 years working in the building industry, forming Brimor Constructions in the 1970s.
He worked on extensions, renovations and new homes, as well as Government contracts, major restoration projects in Mt Macedon and Toorak.
As an apprentice carpenter in 1970, Bill began his career with Ross and Smith Pty Ltd Builders — learning all facets of building work, residential, extensions and commercial projects. In 1975, he began work with John W Henderson Pty Ltd — making a move to commercial and light industrial work. Bill was also a site foreman with Ron Alexander Builders for five years.
Working on residential projects in metropolitan Melbourne and throughout the North West of the state, Brian has seen many changes within the industry.
The founder of Pivot homes, a custom design and construction company building on the surf coast for over 25 years, Austin has himself been the recipient of over 50 awards including Building Designer of the Year and Builder of the Year.
He joined the Master Builders in August 1981. Along with Barry Partridge, David was involved in the Master Builders Group Scheme until BIGS took it over. David went on to work in the membership department, servicing members in Gippsland and the North East of the State. David ran seminars on several issues including the introduction of HGFL, 5 Star, Building Practitioners Board, Warranty Insurance, RES Code, GST, Red card, and spoke on industry topics at trade nights. David joined CBus in 2005 on a 12 month contract to help with the introduction of choice to the building industry (where employees can choose between retail and industry funds). This turned into a full time position and after seven years David is now enjoying retirement.
Bill began his career as Assistant Building Surveyor and Building Inspector in 1985 when he commenced at Borough of Eaglehawk and shared half his time with the Shire of Huntly. After 10 years he joined Master Builders Association of Victoria as a building inspector for the Bendigo region, shortly after the Victorian Government permitted private surveyors /inspectors to operate in Victoria. Bill has been involved with the MBAV Golf Day, judging of the “Apprentice of the Year” Awards and various other member activities.
With an initial focus on renovations Brian’s work soon moved to the construction of new homes, providing mostly for the first home buyers market. A Master Builders member for more than 20 years, this was his fourth year at judging of the Regional Building Awards. In his spare time, Brian enjoys spending time on his property breeding parrots and goats and simply enjoying the rural lifestyle. With three grandchildren, Brian and his wife are kept busy with regular Queensland holidays.
Austin has served as a past chairman of the Western District Master Builders Association of Victoria Country Housing and Apprentice of the Year committees. He is also a member of the surf coast planning committee and was a member of the Geelong land committee for some time. Having recently retired, Austin is now finding time to return to the water. As a keen sailor, he and his wife Jan, have sailed their yacht up to the Whitsundays. He also enjoys water skiing, snow skiing and golf. Austin was delighted this year to take on the challenge of judging these awards.

A UTE IS A UTE, RIGHT? Wheels, motor, seats, they’re all the same, aren’t they? If you walk into two dealerships and ask for a ‘ute’ would you take the cheapest one? Or would you compare the tray, fuel type, transmission, air-conditioning, warranty, capped priced servicing, build quality? Without all the specifications, you aren’t able to make an informed decision about which ute represents the best value.
Construction insurance is no different. It has conditions, exclusions, clauses and definitions and these can be significantly different from one insurer to the next. We can help you get the best value for money because we are the construction insurance specialists.
