Autumn is finally here! The leaves are crunching, the weather is cooling off, and we can finally start embracing beautiful beanies, scarves and everything we love about the autumn weather. Everything leading up to March for the Style team has been exciting. We have gathered some wonderful things to make this cosy, exciting and opportunistic edition for you. What we’re really excited about, however, is International Women’s Day on March 8. Ladies (and gentlemen), this day is such a special time worldwide — the call to #PressforProgress and have the whole community think, act and be gender inclusive is on the agenda for 2018. Do your best to #PressforProgress. We meet local lady Moyalia Tokmak (p8) of A’lia Collective, who has a fashionable eye and a charitable perspective. Her story is inspiring and so interesting for our community. We chat to leading lady for upcoming Empire Theatre production Pirates of Penzance Sophie Salvesani (p10), who gives us the inside scoop on being centre stage. Get behind the team that has created the Garden City Gala (p13) to be held on March 17, with all funds raised being donated to The Black Dog Institute. Nivard Nelson talks food tourism (p29), and its cohesion with social media. Check out our groovy entertainment pages, where we have a look at what’s new in movies, books and music (p48). Snuggle up with your March copy of Style, and enjoy.

The cause
collective BY JOSIE ADAMS
FOR MOYALIA TOKMAK, HER EXOTIC BOUTIQUE IS MORE THAN JUST A FASHION STORE. A’LIA COLLECTIVE OFFERS COMMUNITY, CREATIVITY AND CHARITY WITH AN EMPHASIS ON BEAUTY FROM THE INSIDE OUT.
M
oyalia Tokmak floats towards me. She is draped in rich, beautiful colour, her blonde hair is wild and her arms, adorned in silver and turquoise, move from prayer position to an embrace. “It is so good to meet you.” It’s unseasonably cold and miserable outside, but A’lia Collective, Moyalia’s boutique in Bowen St, feels warm and comforting. Spicy Arabic oil lingers in the air, Indian music softly plays and I feel transported to another world. From the walls hang racks of vibrant colour and varying textures of beautifully hand-crafted textiles from all over the world. A medley of patterns and shapes of what Moyalia describes as all the trappings of travel. “This place is like a travel journal to me,” she says, smiling. “I often think in colour and I’m moved by colours. To me, places reveal their identity through a palette.” There are block prints from Jaipur, pashminas and patchwork from Rajasthan, embroidery from the Banjara region, weavings from Bhutan and silks from Varanasi, reflecting Moyalia’s lifelong love for India and Nepal. Ceramics, homewares, handbags and bespoke jewellery fill the shelves like works of art. “I’ve never been a ‘less is more’ type. If there is a space, I’m going to fill it with something beautiful,” Moyalia laughs, adding she’s inspired by Frida Khalo, Bridget Bardot and Iris Apfel. 8 | March 2018
For the former co-owner/manager of Sofra, one of the city’s most-loved restaurants, the collective is more than a fashion boutique. Moyalia sees it as a way of life and an opportunity to work in communities both local and abroad. She admits the past few years have held wonderful moments, as well as challenges and life changes. In 2015, Moyalia was the driving force behind the Goodwill Village, a fundraising effort to rebuild a school in Satyadevi province in Nepal after the devastating earthquake that killed more
than 9000 people and destroyed villages. During her trip to Nepal, Moyalia was asked to meet 12 children at a small orphanage in Thankot, a four-hour drive from Kathmandu. Devyanter Community School and Home in Thankot housed three girls and nine boys of various ages and castes. In the past three years, with the help of Moyalia and money from the collective, the school and home has now grown to care for more than 150 students. “Sometimes you have to be brought to your knees, to have everything taken www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

away from you, to discover what you’re really made of,” she says. “We all have an inner resilience that keeps directing us to our true north, and when we are still enough … we are transformed. “And you know that can be as a woman or a community or even a country,” referring to her time spent in Nepal in the aftermath of the earthquake. “One thing that stays with me is that the Nepalese people, as far as owning things, really have nothing, yet they live with a grace and integrity and a deep www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle
sense of gratitude that is not always evident here. “I feel like this comes from living in the here and now, being present in the moment, worrying less about the future and trusting divine providence. “It made me think that greatest offering you can give to others is your presence. So I created a sacred space for just that. And those who come here can not only buy beautiful dresses, but they can also just be, and rest in awareness and be present for one another.” She works closely and creatively with
local artists, photographers, models and her ‘tribe’ of much-loved friends, who she says has been invaluable in helping her start the business. The collective hosts basket weaving workshops with local refugee groups, yoga nidra during the week and mehndi (henna application) on Saturday mornings. “I found this graffiti written on a wall once in India. It read, ‘It is a woman’s divine birthright to feel beautiful’ … and it really stuck with me and it’s what I want to create here.” Beautiful inside and out. Sophie dances to
new heights BY ALLY MARTELL
SOPHIE SALVESANI CATCHES UP WITH THE STYLE TEAM TO TALK COSTUMES, KISSES AND CHOREOGRAPHY AS SHE REHEARSES FOR THE ROLE OF MABEL IN THE EMPIRE THEATRE’S PRODUCTION OF ESSGEE’S PIRATES OF PENZANCE.
“
I love my costume,” Sophie says. “It’s very true to the original style. “All the costumes are fantastic and some are from the 1994 production with John English, Simon Gallagher and Toni Lamond and their names are still stitched into the garments which is so cool.” Having played Christine in Phantom of the Opera and Cosette in Les Miserables (with the Ipswich Musical Theatre Company) Sophie is used to cuddling up onstage. “It’s always a bit awkward at first, but Alex – who plays Frederic – and I get along really well and he is really easy to work with. “We both have partners so we are careful not to overstep the boundaries,” she says. “The choreography is really clever and I love working with George Canham and Alison Valette. “I’m not a professional dancer, but they are so upbeat and they make rehearsals a lot of fun. Director Terrence O’Connell is also great to work with and he really encourages me to bring my own ideas into the role.” As for working with Michael Cormack – Sophie is a bit smitten. “I’m still getting over my girlish crush on him,” she laughs. “He is so professional and always great to bounce ideas with. “It’s good for us younger ones to see him go through the same struggles we all do and realise it’s normal. 10 | March 2018

“I am so lucky to be working with him, it’s just amazing.” In addition to Pirates of Penzance, Sophie is squeezing a lot into 2018. She’s a primary school teacher (graduating from USQ) as well as a recipient of a full scholarship with the Young Artists Program of the Pacific Opera in Sydney. “I travel to Sydney for 10 days each month and have private tuition, attend master classes and workshops on things like staging and make-up. “I’m performing with Shakespeare and Friends and doing some ensemble pieces too.” Her primary school class recently asked her to sing something from the show and when she did, they thought she was tricking them and playing a CD of

FOOTY STAR JOINS LOCAL MEN TO HELP TACKLE DEPRESSION ight men and three women take their lives every day in Australia and one in five will suffer from depression at least once in their life. It’s a confronting statistic but it’s the reality, and an inspired group of Toowoomba men want to take action and change that statistic. They’ve formed the Garden City Gala, an event that will take place on March 17 in Toowoomba, with all funds raised being donated to the Black Dog Institute. The guest speakers for the inaugural event are Darius and Kayla Boyd. Darius Boyd, the Broncos captain, has had his struggles with mental health well-documented. “You break a leg, you go to a doctor,” Darius says. “You have a few problems with your mental health, you do the same.
“Men have to know it’s not weak to speak. “I’m honoured Kayla and I can be a part of this great event, which is trying to break the stigma of mental health.” Kayla agrees awareness is needed. “Mental health is a big issue in society and it takes a significant burden, not only on the person battling mental health but also their families,” she says. “Love and support of your close network is vital in overcoming mental health. Events like this go a long way towards breaking the stigma.” GARDEN CITY GALA

#PRESSFORPROGRESS ON
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY O
n March 8, USQ is rallying the community to #PressforProgress at the third annual USQ Shine International Women’s Day Luncheon. Supported by YMCA Queensland, the event will also mark the announcement of the 2018 winners of the USQ Shine Bursary. International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate women and a strong call to action for whole communities to think,
act and be gender-inclusive. This year’s event will also feature a panel discussion on ‘investing in your future’, presented by the USQ Women’s Network and led by USQ alumnae international journalist Rebecca Vonhoff and managing director of Taylor’s Removals, Melissa Taylor. Rebecca says her speech could be an uncomfortable reality check for Toowoomba.
“I’ve seen on Twitter a #metooToowoomba hashtag, so it will be interesting to see what comes of that,” she says. “2018 is a time of cultural reckoning and I think how the city marks the day will be telling. “Are we happy with the status quo or do we think there needs to be change, and are we willing to make that change?” However, in Rebecca’s eyes, #PressforProgress has a multitude of uses. “I take it to mean two things: that the press can be used for progress, and that women ought to push for progress – and I’d say particularly in workplaces,” she says. Alongside a wonderful two-course lunch, there will be lucky door prizes, raffle prizes and a silent auction, thanks to 29 supportive sponsors from the generous community. The emcee for the event will be Hit FM host Gabi Elgood. Visit usq.edu.au/shine for tickets to this exciting and empowering event. Phone the USQ Alumni Relations Office on 4687 5717 or email aumni@usq.edu.au for more information.

WHEN THINGS GET CHILLY WITH autumn approaching we will soon say goodbye to hot summer days and be looking in the back of the cupboard for a coat and scarf. As fashionable as scarves may be, it should only be the weather that calls for this dress wear and not the temperature of your workplace. When a sudden, unexpected (metaphorically speaking) arctic blast rips though your work environment what do you do? At Focus HR, we believe what you need to do is get really good at having powerful, robust discussions. So often people shy away from conflict as it is viewed as negative. I challenge all workplaces to look at conflict, when handled in the right way, as a highly effective way to attain the exceptional. For practical, down-to-earth advice on creating powerful culture, managing workplace behaviours and conflict mediation, phone us on 4765 3456, email to info@focushr.com.au or call in to the office at 277 Hume St. 18 | March 2018
STYLISH SEASON
DIGITAL LENSES
AUTUMN gives us an abundance of fashionable options, with the best in racewear seen at the Weetwood Fashions on the Field competition at Clifford Park Racecourse. The field has been on fire in recent years and as a qualified personal stylist and regular FOTF finalist, I am here to give you the inside scoop on what to wear. On April 7, fashion and racewear lovers will gather for the Weetwood, and as part of the Winter Carnival, appropriate seasonal racewear is a must. Custom millinery made from felt, wool, leather and feathers are ideal, with crowns, halos, boaters and structured headpieces expected to steal the show. Bell sleeves and modest hemlines are on trend – think midi’s, mermaid skirts and pencil skirts – in navy, plum, burgundy, forest green and traditional blacks, greys and red. For more fashion inspiration, see my blog at www.artofstyle.com.au or call 0408 406 065 for more information.
DIGITAL lenses are a type of lens almost unknown a few years ago. They have become more necessary as we, young and old, engage in the digital world more. All near tasks involve us focussing and converging our eyes for much longer periods, so tired, dry eyes and even a worsening of eyesight is possible. Spectacle and contact lenses have now been designed to allow us to do these tasks more comfortably and safely by reducing fatigue of the eye muscles. We can also use lens coatings developed to block out high energy blue light, which can help to reduce fatigue and protect certain cells in your retina. These coatings decrease the disturbance to your circadian rhythm which can affect sleep cycles. Ask us at Somerville Merrin Neilson Optometrists about the options now available in digital spectacle and contact lenses, or any other vision problems you have. Visit www.smnoptometrists.com.au, email office@smnoptometrists.com.au or call 4635 7340 for details. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

SMOOTH TRANSITION BY FELICITY WRIGHT, FASHION COLUMNIST
M
arch in Australia — no longer summer, but not quite winter. For many of us ladies, this can throw the most organised wardrobe into a bit of a spin of confusion. Summer dress — goosebumps, knitted jumper — sweating bullets. What is a girl to do? Don’t fret ladies, here are a few tips and tricks to see your stylish self through. Add more layers: I know this sounds pretty simple, but don’t underestimate the power of a lightweight jacket this time of year. Pop it over your favourite summer dress and finished it with a loafer or ankle boot and you are ready for whatever the weather gods throw at you.
Button up: Take your pretty summer skirt and add a crisp button up shirt (white or denim are my faves) roll the sleeves up to elbow length to give more of a relaxed look. Crop it: A lightweight crop pant will definitely get a run for their money during this funny season. This will be a great way to continue to wear all your lovely summer tops but add more coverage than shorts or a flippy skirt. A light wash denim or cotton still gives that Summer feel but can be worn into the cooler months. Denim jacket: Enough said really! This bad boy will be your wardrobes saving grace. It adds instant warmth but not too much and there really isn’t anything
you can’t put it over! The midi: This length of skirt is so versatile. The midi shows just enough leg that it doesn’t look out of place if the sun is shining or hasn’t been seen for a week. Team it with one of your favourite summer tops, denim jacket and a lightweight scarf and you are ready to roll. Happy layering!

DR MAGNUSSON LEADING THE WAY Dr Mark Magnusson won the My Face My Body Awards 2017 category for Best Plastic Surgeon Australasia in Sydney
M
FMB is a global awards program with an international judging panel recognising leading aesthetic industry professionals. Judging is based on the nominees professional practice, contributions to research and education, commitment to delivering expert care in their speciality and contributions to the profession. The award also includes undercover consultations for a first-hand and anonymous evaluation of the practitioner at work. Dr Magnusson’s practices focus especially on the face, breast and body. “I have practised in Toowoomba for 17 years now and although I also work on the Gold Coast, Toowoomba remains our home and the bulk of our practice,” Dr Magnusson says. Dr Magnusson is one of only two Australian plastic surgeons on the editorial board for the prestigious
Aesthetic Surgery Journal, Aesthetic Surgery Section Editor for the Australasian Journal of Plastic Surgery and is current president of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS). There are many facets to his work, including his role as president of ASAPS. In this role he has continued to drive to raise industry standards, improved patient safety and push for a much clearer understanding of what the difference is between a specialist plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon. With current regulations it is possible for anybody to call themselves a cosmetic surgeon regardless of whether or not they have had any recognised specialist surgical training. THIS AUTUMN... Turn your attention to animal prints, statement sleeves and anything red
T
he change of season brings an exciting turn in fashion. Fortunately, many of the hottest autumn looks this year are enjoying their third or fourth season, which means you may have some on-trend pieces hiding in your wardrobe already. Animal attraction: An absolute style staple, animal prints never seem to go out of fashion and are trending again this autumn. Fitted jackets and oversized coats to scarves, belts, handbags and big sunglasses, this print works well both as an all-over leopard and jaguar seem to be the most popular prints making a stylish statement by day and offering an effortless transition to late night glamour. Statement sleeves: The 2017 trend is one to be repeated this autumn as sleeves make an even bigger statement. Expect more bells, flounces, ruffles, ruches and flares in everything from cotton pinstripe shirts to elegant form-fitting dresses. Pair with simple
designs such as a straight leg trousers or a pair of jeans for a more casual yet polished look. Red hot everything: Ultra-feminine and guaranteed to turn heads, the colour red is from deep crimson to bright cherry there is a flattering shade for everyone. Seen on the autumn catwalks in everything from sheer, floaty gowns to structured wool coats. All things glittery: Shine on in the cooler months in shimmery golds, bronze and the darling of this season; silver. Go all over gilded for night time glam or tone it down for the office with a simple grey or black knit. If committing to high-shine is not your style, opt for a statement accessory such as a silver ankle boot or lame` clutch. Polka dots: The black and white staple is making a huge comeback and can be seen on everything from whimsical satin ball gowns to form-fitting work attire. Mix it up with contrasting prints in bold colours or layer with an oversized knit.

SPONSORSHIP-
THE LIFEBLOOD OF EVENTS BY LAUREN HOPE, GENERAL COLUMNIST
P
Beautifully crafted Jewellery & Watches for every occasion!
utting together events is my speciality, my craft and my passion. I love them because they’re a fantastic opportunity to bring a concept to life, showcase our region and to partner with brands through strategic sponsorships. The value to our community is enormous. Local events provide a much-needed boost to our economy plus they encourage business and community involvement, togetherness and participation. Really, what’s not to love? However, how many events is too many? Is it based on a town’s population? By hosting too many events are we diluting our numbers and creating too much competition? I don’t know what the answer is (and that’s a whole other article), however my view would be to see a focus on quality events for our region rather than just trying to fill the yearly calendar. Let’s look at sponsorship as an example. Firstly, I must say that we live in a very generous community when it comes to sponsorship, I am often astounded at just how encouraging our local community is in relation to events. I’m not just referring to our well-known ‘big’ businesses, but also printers, photographers, caterers, security — the list goes on. Sponsorship often plays a determining factor if an event will proceed or not. For example, to host a music festival is extremely costly, especially with the growing legislative requirements, and there are only so many sponsors to approach. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all doom and gloom. Sponsorship can be one of the most overlooked components to a business marketing strategy. Attaching your business name to an event can buy back unmeasurable exposure while building credibility and generating leads. Let me leave you with this red-hot tip! If you are considering a sponsorship don’t just leave the marketing to the event organiser. Maximise your return by promoting your sponsorship to your networks, leverage your database by inviting them to attend, update your digital channels — get yourself seen!

LET ME LEND YOU MY EAR BY LISA MACHIN, OPINION COLUMNIST
Y
ou know the saying ‘treat people as you’d like to be treated,’... time to forget it! This edition of Style is all about events, people and making connections – viva la fiesta! Or that networking event (come on, they’re not that bad! Sometimes there are mini quiches!). The one major mistake we make as social beings is thinking all people are wired the same as us and operate with
our same value system. Take me for example, 90 per cent extrovert. I could be in a room of people for eight hours straight and still have something to say. I think it shows respect to look someone in the eyes and be direct. That’s how I like to deal with people. My dear introvert pals, however, might prefer to ease into a conversation, stand side by side rather than directly
facing the person, and perhaps not speak directly about things. So how do you make that connection when you’re wired opposite? It’s easy. The art of conversation has two parts… talking AND listening. Everybody has a story. Your job as a listener is… shock horror ... to listen. Even if you’re a flamboyant, annoying, loud extrovert like me, you can listen. Some of the professional connections and lifelong friendships I’ve made have been thanks to a little two-way convo. And I don’t mean nodding and absent-mindedly thinking about what you’ll make for dinner. I mean actually thinking about what they are saying. You’d be surprised how rarely someone actually engages in active listening, and you’d be surprised how much people open up to you when you do. A rich conversation brings the content to life, because you’re both engaged. And if you find yourself trapped by a person droning on and on, who themselves is a terrible listener, just politely take your leave and sidle off towards the food platters. Conversation, my dear, is a two-way street!

TALKING ABOUT LEPTIN BY ELSPETH HASWELL-SMITH, WELLBEING COLUMNIST
W
eight loss can be a hard journey and currently we are being told that reducing our calorie intake is the way to achieve weight loss. However, what we are not looking at, is the nutritional value in our food and how to feed our body with optimal nutrients. An example of this is consuming the same amount of calories in a chocolate bar compared to a salad with seeds, olive oil and avocado. You will receive more nutrients in essential vitamins and minerals than in a processed chocolate bar. If you are currently on a
weight loss journey make sure you are filling up on unprocessed foods focusing on an abundance of vegetables, palm sized portions of protein and a moderate serving of healthy fat at each meal. Consume regular meals that assist with keeping your blood sugar levels stable keeping cravings at bay. This style of eating will also support your leptin hormone to signal properly in your body. Leptin is a hormone in the body that is made in the fat cells. Its main role is to communicate to the hypothalamus
and indicate if more energy is required or not. The hypothalamus is a small part in our brain that is like a thermostat to the human body. If an individual is leptin sensitive, the leptin will be switched on to indicate to the hypothalamus that the body is well nourished and has good energy stores, thus there will be no strong hunger signals. However, in an individual that is leptin resistant, there is miscommunication in the hypothalamus, sending a message to the brain that leptin levels are low or none are present, creating constant levels of hunger. Consequences of leptin resistance are obesity, chronic disease, fertility issues, hormonal and thyroid dysfunction. Individuals will find it really hard to diet and likely to regain the weight lost if they do not address leptin resistance. Individuals will also experience uncontrollable cravings for sugars and carbohydrates. Therefore, consuming good nutrient dense foods with regular meals will assist in healthy leptin signalling. If you are struggling to lose weight, talk to your health practitioner about how leptin may be hindering your success.

Autumn brings a change of readily available fresh produce. Earthy and deep greens and reds as well as vibrant oranges and yellows uniquely benefit the immune system and general well-being as the temperatures slowly drop. Combining coloured veggies with warming garlic, ginger and a touch of chilli or cayenne pepper can enhance their immune-boosting power.
BE PRO-ACTIVE WITH YOUR PROBIOTICS
Dry, windy weather combined with pollen, dust and mould can really set off autumn allergies. Adding probiotics to your diet aids gut health and fires up your immune system, not only helping you fight allergies, but setting you up to successfully combat cold and flu season.
TRY TO KEEP MOVING
Our usually warm autumn weather is conducive to long walks and outdoor exercise. However, as the days get shorter and mornings cooler the motivation to crawl out from under those bed covers tends to disappear. Committing to set classes whether it be yoga, pilates or a pump class or booking a weekly session with a personal trainer can keep you motivated and your health on track.
ALLOW A LITTLE HIBERNATION
After a spring and summer filled with holidays and celebrations, slowing down in autumn can be a welcome reprieve. Shorter days and longer nights provide the perfect opportunity for some self-care, whether it’s a hot bath, a much-needed sleep-in or a quiet weekend wrapped up in a blanket watching Netflix. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

FOOD TOURISM BY NIVARD NELSON, FOOD COLUMNIST
I
nstagram, Snapchat, Facebook? Are these the new drivers of food tourism? Is public interest in food tourism fuelling, or being fuelled by social media? Has our pursuit of likes and followers created a boom in food tourism? Going out to eat now involves ‘checking in’ so others can see where we dine, making sure we get that photo of the dish at the right angle so it becomes online drool-worthy.
I say it is a combination of the two. People are searching for the next great thing. We have this FOMO (fear of missing out), driving us to search out the next and greatest experience. For many diners this now encompasses not just the food, but the decor, the furniture, the cutlery, glass wear and plates. I’m guilty of it. I look at glasses, making sure they are attractive. I know this is wrong and I should be judging on what’s in the glass
but I can’t help it. That’s the society we live in. All those touches and flourishes help to create an experience that brings out excitement and joy. And it’s that excitement and joy which fuels our desire to share our experiences. With the rise of social media, our sharing happens almost instantaneously and we allow people to live vicariously through our posts. Conversely, we live through others posts. This has encouraged restaurants and cafes to become more aware of their posts and how it plays a role in their advertising of their establishments. A fine example of this is two restaurants on opposite sides of Toowoomba. Bluebird Kitchen in Warwick and Emeraude in Hampton. Both are destination visits for people unless you live locally and are very conscious of their profile on social media. They encourage their guests to post images of the food as this delivers more people keen to try something new and interesting. So as diners we need to be sharing our experiences with our followers as this will drive demand and growth and encourage more tourism thereby giving us even greater experiences.

LASH MOB H OW TO A P P LY FA K E E Y E L A S H E S
STEP 1
STEP 3
STEP 5
SIZING THE LASHES
APPLYING THE LASHES
REMOVAL
Gently remove the fake eyelashes from their packaging to avoid damaging the strands. Wrap the lash band around your finger to soften the spine. Place the fake eyelashes against your natural lash line without any glue. If the lash extends past the outer edge of the eye, make a note of how much you will need to trim.
STEP 2
TRIMMING
Trim off excess strands, starting from the outer corner and working towards the middle. Some people may find they have slightly different-shaped eyes, therefore measure both eyes separately and cut the fake lashes accordingly. For a more natural look you can feather the lashes. Cut every other strand about 3mm shorter than the next.
www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle
Use a small synthetic brush to apply glue to the base line of the fake lashes, concentrating the glue on the outer and inner edges. After applying the glue, gently fan the lashes with your hand until the glue becomes tacky. Never blow on the lashes as this will introduce germs. Using tweezers, place the middle of the strip on the centre of your lashes. Press the band down along your lash line, concentrating on the outer and inner corners. Hold the strip in place for 40-60 seconds to make sure it is secure. Then slowly and gently release, ensuring the lashes don’t lift off at the corners of the eye.
STEP 4
To remove, soak a cotton pad in an eye make-up remover. Hold the cotton pad over your closed eye for 20 seconds to loosen the glue. Repeat as necessary until the lash strip loosens enough to lift away without pulling your skin.
STEP 6
CLEANING
After removing your fake lashes, place them into a shallow bowl. Pour eye make-up remover into the bowl so the lashes are soaked. Set aside for five minutes. Remove lashes from the bowl and place onto a clean paper towel. Use tweezers to remove any excess glue. Store the eyelashes in their original packaging.
APPLY MASCARA AND RETOUCH LINER Apply a coat of mascara by sweeping underneath the natural lash and pushing upwards into the fake ones. It is also recommended to retouch the eyeliner to conceal where the fake and natural lashes meet.

HEART HEALTH AT ST VINCENT’S PRIVATE HOSPITAL TOOWOOMBA
S
t Vincent’s Private Hospital has launched a new cardiology service in partnership with leading Queensland cardiology service provider HeartCare Partners. The St Vincent’s Cardiology Service, which is being delivered in collaboration with local cardiology providers Downs Cardiac Clinic and Heart 1st will commence as a diagnostic service, and expand to include a full range of interventional services later in 2018. The service is fully supported by the hospital’s experienced teams in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 24-hour Emergency Centre, Toowoomba’s only private Emergency service, as well as
Queensland X-Ray. The hospital’s team of experienced specialist and subspecialist cardiologists is supported by state-of-the-art cardiac imaging and cardiac catheter technology recently installed as part of the $30 million Clive Berghofer Operating Theatre Suite. To support the service, refurbishment is currently underway on the new 16-bed St Vincent’s Cardiac Unit. Private rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring to ensure patients recover safely, in a comfortable, modern and peaceful environment. While heart disease is one of the major diseases affecting Australian
adults, the good news is that many of the disease risk factors are modifiable. If you think your heart health needs attention, speak to your GP about a referral to St Vincent’s Private Hospital for a diagnostic assessment. Here are a few tips to help prevent cardiovascular disease: Quit smoking. Smokers are twice as likely to have a heart attack as non-smokers. From the moment you stop smoking, your risk of heart attack starts to reduce. Exercise and lose weight. Your heart needs exercise to keep fit for its arduous task of pumping blood efficiently around your body for the rest of your life. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a day. Eat a balanced diet. Healthy eating helps to reduce the risk of developing heart disease, and can also help increase your chances of survival after a heart attack. Cut your salt intake. Too much salt causes high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease. Limit your alcohol. Too much alcohol can damage the heart muscle, increase blood pressure and lead to weight gain.
St Vincent’s Private Hospital new Cardiology Service St Vincent’s Private Hospital now offfers a comprehensive range of specialist cardiology diagnostic services, including coronary angiography. •
Services are delivered by experienced local cardiologists from Hearts 1st and Downs Cardiac Clinic.

Paddy Ryan comes with a whole parcel of old-world values. You can tell straight away from his handshake. It’s as firm as his word, and as warm as his engaging character. In fact, he’s known across Toowoomba for his country-bred integrity — his quiet and unfussed ability to make deals stick. While that’s partially thanks to his farming heritage, it’s also from how he’s forged a solid reputation as a great all rounder — his broad depth of up-to-the-minute market knowledge making him equally at home at both ends of the residential market, and lifestyle acreages. Paddy’s loyalty to his sellers and deep respect for his buyers shows up in his constant communication. Both parties are kept up-to-date with genuine and honest feedback. 2.5i model maintains the same starting price of $36,240. Inside, Subaru has remodelled the centre touchscreen to look like a tablet, which complements the addition of Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone mirroring. The infotainment will also hook up to Spotify, iHeartRadio and TuneIn. More expensive models get adaptive headlights that peer around corners and automatically dim the high-beam. The main focus of the update is safety. Images from new front-view and side-view monitors are displayed on the
centre screen, improving vision at intersections and when parking. Subaru has also improved the effectiveness of its driver assistance technology, adding lane keep assist with steering inputs and enhancing the existing pedestrian avoidance, adaptive cruise control and automated emergency braking. Engine and transmission changes are limited to the 2.5-litre engine and continuously variable transmission. Subaru’s changes make the CVT more responsive and the engine quieter yet more snappy.

When dreams meet experience
W
hen it comes to designing and creating the perfect home, Dave and Lorraine Lonsdale could be considered seasoned pros. They’ve built four of them now, and have a pretty good understanding of what’s needed to construct the home of their dreams. That’s why they knew they were on a winner with Geoff Gibson Homes. Having spent many years in South Australia, returning to the area was an exciting homecoming for Lorraine – as she was born in Toowoomba. After choosing their Gowrie Junction property online, the Lonsdales then turned their attention to selecting a team they could trust to build their new pride and joy. They had preliminary discussions with another builder, but it was the quality and details in Lorraine’s sister’s residence that convinced the couple that Geoff Gibson Homes could deliver on all their expectations. “Geoff built my sister’s house and we were very impressed,” Lorraine said.“It was so naturally cool in summer and warm in winter that we wanted to learn more about the energy-efficient processes Geoff applies,” Lorraine said. “After speaking with Rick, our salesman, we knew we had our builder. It felt right.” The Lonsdales had a clear idea of what was needed in their home and worked with the experienced Geoff Gibson team to finalise their vision. “My husband Dave has an engineer’s brain, so he understood structure and the techniques and materials,” Lorraine said. “But, for me – I wanted a bespoke home – so it was all about the aesthetics and Geoff and the team were able to deliver on both counts. “While they offered great advice, we were also able to give so much input from the get go as well.
“We’d built other homes off a plan, but this time we could virtually do whatever,” Lorraine revealed. “Some builders can give you all the basics and then extras keep adding on to your final price, but Geoff insists on working from a budget backwards – so there are no surprises or compromises. “They got where I was coming from and we only needed a few minor tweaks.” Lorraine said the insulation, quality windows and doors and the orientation of their home on the block has dramatically cut their energy usage. The Lonsdale home has an energy rating of 7.2 stars, while a standard home will come with approximately a 4.5 rating. “I was not energy focused at all – I was more about the aesthetics, but we have just spent the hottest few weeks of summer in our new home without the need for air-conditioning. People can’t believe how cool it is compared to the FINALISTS outside temperature and we’re now looking DISPLAY HOME forward to how it counters the coming ENERGY EFFICIENCY winter months.” Perhaps the most telling testimonial Look for this column to the quality of the work doesn’t in next month’s Style... come from the Lonsdale’s but their we’ll be talking about new neighbours, who are yet to finalise why you too can trust choosing their own builder. the wide-ranging energy “We invited them over and they were so efficiency expertise of impressed with our home that they’re our team. considering contacting Geoff as well,” Lorraine said.

“STAY GROUNDED AND REMEMBER THE REASON YOU’RE PLANNING ALL THIS – IT REALLY CREATES A MAGICAL DAY THAT YOU WILL CHERISH FOREVER"
A WINTER WONDERLAND H
eidi Teitzel and Joel Marshall were married in a beautiful winter ceremony at Gabbinbar Homestead. The couple met through family four years ago. “Joel is my cousin’s best friend,” Heidi says. “We got to know each other as friends and then one Christmas it developed into something more. Everything we wanted in life was so similar, and our values and attitudes are the same.” Joel is equally enamoured. “Heidi is beautiful inside and out, she is the most caring and loving person to everyone around her,” Joel says. Joel proposed to Heidi in Hawaii after a month-long holiday in the US. “Joel took me to watch the fireworks and then we went to the best seafood restaurant on the island,” Heidi says.
“After we finished dinner we sat on the beach and Joel lit some candles and popped a bottle of champagne and then the question … I knew it was coming so it was hilarious – very awkward, not too serious, and just totally us.” The couple married in a romantic and intimate ceremony in June. “We wanted a winter wedding because we both love the cooler weather,” Heidi says. “We had a small guest list, which made it easy to spend quality time with our guests. The day ran so smoothly. Even the rainy weather added to our cosy winter wedding.” The happy couple then celebrated their reception at The Conservatory at the homestead. “We had the fires lit and sipped warm mulled cider. colours were natural and neutral – whites and shades of green. We brought a little bit of a winter woodlands vibe in with the deer antlers on the tipi and on our stationery. I would describe the theme as earthy but elegant. “The day really was like a dream. Walking around together sharing a drink knowing we were now husband and wife, our energy and love instantly changed. It was so surreal and very cool.” And if Heidi could offer any advice to couples getting married, it would be to plan the wedding they really want. “Do what makes you happy and whatever will allow you to have your perfect day. Don’t focus your energy on other people’s opinions or comments,” she advises.

APPROACHING EASTER THE HEALTHY WAY IS IT JUST US, OR DOES EASTER FEEL EXTRA EARLY THIS YEAR? WITH EVENTS FAST APPROACHING, LIFESHAPE CLINIC DIETITIAN NICOLA MOORE GIVES US SOME PRACTICAL TIPS TO STAY ON TRACK
T
his time of year can be tempting for those who are trying to take control of their health. Rather than trying to avoid chocolate altogether, Nicola’s tips will help you stay on track without having to skip the celebrations. “First, remember chocolate is available all year round,” says Nicola. “There’s no need to overindulge the whole month before Easter. The traditional day to celebrate is Easter Sunday. When you do enjoy a treat, pick your favourite item or a good quality piece of dark chocolate, and savour it! You’ll feel far more satisfied.” Second, use Easter traditions to your advantage and try a new fish dish on Good Friday.
“There are plenty of delicious recipes on our website for inspiration,” says Nicola. Third, take the focus away from food entirely and use the extra days off to your advantage. “Now that autumn’s here, use the cooler weather to get outdoors and enjoy activities or crafts with the family,” says Nicola. On that note, think about upping your activity level where possible. Did you know, it takes more than 100 minutes of brisk walking to burn off a 135g hollow egg? Lastly, think about gifting mindfully. “Oxfam offer a range of gift cards which donate items to developing countries,” says Nicola.
“For Easter, a chicken or the veggie garden are my picks! You can also swap the traditional eggs in the family egg hunt for small toys or stationery items.” Contact LifeShape Clinic on 1800 567 348 or visit lifeshape.com.au.

CHICKEN TACOS
SCENE
Grilled to crispy perfection and full of Mexican flavour, the chicken was the star of this dish. Complemented again by a light drizzle of fresh tomato and herb-infused sauce and the zesty sour cream, this soft-shelled taco was simple, fresh and delicious. With two tacos in a serve, this dish would make a perfect lunchtime treat.
Delkys at The Ridge offers a fresh and zesty take on some Mexican favourites, with perfectly marinated meats and a sour cream to die for
DELKYS PULLED PORK SALAD BEEF NACHOS Marinated, grilled beef with just a hint of spice topped with cheese and a fresh tomato salsa was our first dish. While it can be hard to go wrong with this Tex-Mex favourite, the addition of tangy salsa and lime was exceptionally refreshing and brilliantly complemented the varying textures. Then there was Delkys side of signature sour cream featuring fresh herbs and a hint of lime, which took this staple to the next level.
Packed with fresh mixed greens, slow roasted vegetables, black beans and a hefty side of delicious salsa, there was a lot to love about this super-sized salad. The slow-cooked pulled pork was tender and flavoursome while the fresh herbs and lime-infused dressing complemented the meat perfectly. The addition of crunchy corn chips gave the salad an appealing texture.

GREAT AUTUMN READ THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A F*CK Author: Mark Manson
Popular internet blogger Mark Manson cuts through the ‘positive all the time crap’ and tells it like it is in his book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. Peppered with curse words and toilet references, Manson makes the argument, backed by academic research, that human beings are limited and flawed and not everybody can be extraordinary. There are winners and there are losers in everything and the best that we can do is accept our limitations, fears and faults and live the best life we can. More importantly though, in an age of filtered Instagrammed ‘realities’, #goals and outrageous expectations, Manson refreshingly shows us that it is ultimately up to us to choose what we honestly care about and to learn to not give a f--- about the things we really don’t.
BLACK PANTHER
Release date: February 15 Genre: Superhero Cast: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman Running time: 134 minutes THE latest instalment from the Marvel Cinematic Universe acts as somewhat of an origin story for the Black Panther superhero, introduced in 2016 film Captain America: Civil War. Chadwick Boseman plays T’Challa, the Black Panther, who takes over as King of mystical African nation Wakanda, a technologically advanced nation that is isolated from the rest of the world. What makes the film stand out is at times you can’t really tell who is the hero or villain. You are often led to sympathise with the film’s main baddie, Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan). Within days of its release, the film was already certified 97 per cent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and it’s not hard to see why. It is an exploration of oppression, racial politics and more. This film is a game-changer for the superhero genre and will be remembered for years to come.

PREPARING FOR THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE BY LEANNE MCDONALD, DIRECTOR AND SENIOR FINANCIAL PLANNER OF CREATE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS
T
he choices we make in life have a big influence on our personal happiness and also on the well-being of those we love. Perhaps you are thinking about a career change or how to achieve a better work/life balance? Maybe you are about to take the plunge into the property market, or choose a school for your child? Whatever choices are ahead of you, it’s better to be in the driver’s seat than just winging it. The cost of raising kids: The cost of raising two children is estimated to be more than $1 million today for higher income families, thanks largely to the cost of private education. The simple act of choosing the right school for your child can involve competing priorities
and trade-offs between lifestyle, career, income and family. For example, families need to weigh up whether one partner will take time out of the workforce to care for children or work part-time, or whether both parents need to work full-time. If money is tight, would you be better off sending the kids to a public school and spending the money saved on extra-curricular activities and holidays? Changing careers and work/life balance: Changing careers can also have a big impact on family life and finances. Will the short-term financial pain of switching to a job with a lower salary, re-training or starting a business lead to better long-term financial
prospects? And money is not the only issue. The decision to be your own boss or to work from home could also improve your work/life balance and make life less stressful for the entire family. Property choices: Take the decision to buy your first home or upgrade, rent or buy an investment property. Unless you have significant help from your family or an inheritance, you may need to cut back spending on clothes, travel or eating out in order to save a deposit. And it doesn’t stop there. Once you buy a property you may need to re-arrange your financial priorities in order to repay the mortgage quickly.

IT’S JUST THE VIBE OF THE THING BY JENNIFER RYDER, GENERAL MANAGER OF BEST WILSON BUCKLEY FAMILY LAW
great movie character once distilled a good passage of legal precedent into that most simple and understandable of phrases that still resonates with Australians today. Our team has recently worked to distil the essence of Best Wilson Buckley Family Law into such a turn of phrase. The result is the clearest sense of who we are to ourselves, to each other, to our clients, to our colleagues and as part of the legal fraternity and wider community. As a small firm we have a big dream and that is to shift how family law is practised in such a way that we help separating parties to honour the time that they’ve had together and the family they’ve built, and we prioritise an
optimal experience for the children involved. Rigid, black letter law, doesn’t do this naturally or well in our experience. We share a desire to see the “legal” better fit the personal experience of separating families. To better define this we have determined what it is that drives us on this journey each and every day – the values we hold dear and share. It is our individual and collective desire to make this world a better place when we leave it than when we came into it, and working with separated families in a legal context is the means by which we do that. Our values for ourselves, each other, our clients, our colleagues and our community are:
Nurture – to care for, support, protect and grow. Contribution – to craft a more meaningful outcome. Vision – to create a renewed sense of possibility for the future. Connection – to hear, understand and reach. Stability – to be consistent, structured and responsive. There it is, our essence distilled. What has quickly become evident is that there is nothing soft about these values, in many ways they are responsible for our collective strength and will no doubt fuel our continuing strength in the years to come, and it is truly our vibe.

YOU’RE INVITED…
A BEAUTIFUL INVITATION IS A VERY PERSUASIVE THING. YOU ARE SO CAPTIVATED BY ITS CHARM AND FLATTERED BY ITS QUALITY, YOU CANNOT POSSIBLY SAY NO
I
t’s the invitation to an event that sets the overall tone from the outset. If it’s a formal event, choose a formal invitation. If it’s a creative event, you can lash out and make the invitation unique. In a world of fantastic apps and software, what is the best way to send out invitations these days? A lot of businesses are creating interest with amusing animated apps or software that is easy to email and track.
Invitations slip out of envelopes and unfurl in front of you – it’s mesmerising! Just don’t send these too often or you dampen the effect. Other businesses swear by online booking agencies, which are superefficient at tracking RSVPs. They’re great for big events, especially when you’re asking for payment. But they are a little impersonal and easy to ignore. So where does this leave paper invitations?
Nothing compares to a beautiful invitation on quality stock with matching envelope. It takes time, effort and expense, which makes the recipient feel like royalty. They will display that invitation in a prominent place for all to see. Regardless of the type of invitation you send, you must ensure it is easy for your guests to RSVP and equally easy for you to gather in those replies. Happy inviting!

GEMINI
May 22 – June 22 If you are working on getting your dream job there has never been a better time, the stars are aligning just at the right time, so go for it, I say. Live that dream, buy that expensive wardrobe, eat the cake and dance as if everyone is watching. You are in the cycle of success. nd
IT’S IN THE STARS PISCES
Feb 20th – Mar 20th Start swimming little fish before the colder months arrive. When the weather starts to get cooler some Pisceans move back indoors so they can prepare their house for the winter months ahead, stocking up on snacks so they don’t have to brave the cold months once they hit. It is also time to do your sums, work out what needs to change and go for it. You won’t regret one moment.
ARIES
Mar 21st – Apr 20th Imagine your ideal holiday destination. Have you got a place in mind? Start saving so by the end of the year it will be first class all the way, depending on your work commitments of course. Remember to save up spending money, as you are going to need big bucks if you want a holiday to remember.
TAURUS
Apr 21st – May 21st Try to imagine living life out of the fast lane — it might be time to take a chill pill and relax a little, as you will get more achieved if you don’t go like a bull in a china shop. Time heals all wounds and strengthens bonds that will remain with you for many days.
nd
CANCER
June 23rd – July 23rd While one door may close, another opens, so even though you may be feeling a little fragile now, it is time to open to a brand-new journey you are destined to walk. This is the time to make sure you are headed in the right direction. Go with your gut feeling — what feels right probably will be, so it is onwards and upwards from here on.
LEO
July 24th – Aug 23rd Leo’s are made of strong dedicated commitment and while you may feel a little like the train that could, it is the constant I-think-I-can attitude that will get you far. If considering study, now is the time to improve your skill set which will lead to achieving career goals.
VIRGO
Aug 24th – Sept 24th Breathe in, your world is beautiful at present so embrace it and take in all the positive energy that surrounds you to welcome a brand-new chapter in your life. Life often throws a few trials, but with strength, determination and drive there is nothing you cannot handle.
LIBRA
Sept 24th – Oct 23rd Libra, wow! What a whirlwind journey you have been on. However, it has given you the strength to grow spiritually and mentally. Your life is now feeling
complete, with all the goals you set yourself last year ticked off and completed. Looking for new challenges can only add to your skills, seeing you fly higher this year than ever before.
SCORPIO
Oct 24th – Nov 22nd Sexy Scorpio, you are looking fine and people are noticing, so whether it is your career sector that is gearing up for greatness or in your personal life, you are smoking hot right now.
SAGITTARIUS
Nov 23rd – Dec 21st Bow at the ready, Sagittarius you are ready to take on all comers, no one backs baby into a corner unless they are really wanting to test their wits. You make all the tough ones look like Mary Poppins — there is nothing deadlier than a Sagittarian in attack mode.
CAPRICORN
Dec 22nd – Jan 20th Still plodding along, you may feel a bit like a hamster on a wheel of destiny as you go through the same old, same old, but perseverance will achieve greatness in the long run. It is down to hard work, training and discipline, that is very much needed in your life at present. So knuckle down buttercup, otherwise you will still be on that wheel until next year.
AQUARIUS
Jan 21st – Feb 19th You have a bit of a burden on your shoulders this month but you need to shake it off. It’s time to revamp your wardrobe, look good and feel great by treating yourself to a much-needed makeover. Autumn is a time for frolicking through the leaves — as they fall, you will feel like a child all over again.
