WINNER’S PROFILE 300 George delivers praise for construction giant
Multiplex’s health and safety game changer
FOR MORE than 55 years Multiplex Constructions has been building iconic projects across the globe and has established itself as a premier global construction company. They are committed to outperforming for people and places utilising their powerful thinking, rewarding partnerships and culture of empowerment. It is these attributes that will continue to hold them in good stead for the future. Integrity and certainty of delivery are at the heart of their approach, and they challenge themselves to deliver more than just on time and on budget. When others say it cannot be done – Multiplex delivers. Multiplex is on a continuous journey to enhance safety culture and standards across the business and the broader industry, and their clients benefit from 55 years of health and safety expertise. They work with their clients to design
and integrate safety controls during the planning phase of their projects, with the aim of minimising or eliminating risk on their sites. Multiplex embrace the Safer by Design approach and recognise through early planning, they stand to have a much greater impact on project outcomes. They don’t simply tick a box when it comes to health and safety; they strive to have a practical impact on the safety of their projects and this is enriched by collaboration between their staff, their clients and the people they work with. It is their ability to deliver consistently and safely that has earned them multiple Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards nominations including Commercial Building over $50 million and Excellence in Workplace Health & Safety for 300 George St. 300 GEORGE STREET The project consisted of the construction
of the remarkable 42-level commercial tower, which commenced in mid-2017, with the completion at the end of 2019. Multiplex took up this challenge with some building methods that are uncommon in Brisbane, but assisted in a more efficient and flexible build. They chose to utilise a structural steel frame to reduce concrete placement, thereby improving the floor cycle time. “By implementing composite steel components into the typical structural deck design, building mass was reduced, the carbon footprint was significantly improved, and construction cycle times were more efficient without compromising cost or safety,” said project manager James Davey. 300 George St showcases the skill and expertise Multiplex needed to design and build such a stunning piece of Brisbane’s skyline. They were able to create 58,209sqm worth of office space within the 42 levels. “300 George Street not only sets the new benchmark for commercial office space in the Brisbane CBD, it defines the future expectations for advancements in building innovation and construction techniques,” said James. Innovations such as the column rotator developed by Multiplex greatly minimised the risk associated with rotating steel columns, from horizontal at delivery to vertically for installation.
While assessing the typical installation process of the steel columns, the 300 George St team determined the following hazards needed to be managed:
Potential collision/interaction between tower cranes while rotating the columns on the deck.
Use of mobile cranes in a high-level traffic area
Potential for columns to strike temporary construction support works while being rotated
In line with the Multiplex strategy of managing risks and opportunities through early intervention, a solution was proposed to Beenleigh Steel as a means of minimising the use of high-risk plant. The result of the collaboration was the column rotator, made in two variations (single or double column capacity) and fixed to the delivery trucks.
The steel columns were bolted to the column rotator at the Beenleigh Steel yard. Using the column rotator as a pivot point, only one crane was required to vertically rotate each column. The design process was a success and essentially eliminated all possible interaction/collision between tower cranes, mobile cranes, and temporary edge protection during rotation. An added benefit to the design was that it didn’t restrict the use of both site tower cranes, therefore allowing other structural elements to continue while the columns were installed.
Proud to be Stroud

This proven track record, combined with their strong reputation for exceptional service and superior quality, are why they have such a promising referral network and connections to the best tradespeople. When choosing Stroud Homes, there are three steps to take before they can start finding the perfect fit for their clients’ home. Once they’ve got the clients’ land, family and budget in the picture the final step is starting on the build. It all starts with the land. How much land does the client have and what sort of block is it? Is it level, sloping or wooded? All these factors influence what sort of home can be built.
“We’ll work with you to make sure your house is oriented correctly to take advantage of morning sun and cross ventilation,” the Stroud Homes team said.
Stroud Homes also offers great house and land packages, where the home and location are already ideally matched. “When designing your dream home, another important factor to consider is your family and the type of lifestyle you lead,” they said.
“The first obvious question is ‘How big is your family?’ “From there we consider other factors.
“What are the lifestyle priorities of different family members and how will this influence the home design? “Do you like to entertain, have a growing family, hobbies or a home business?” After land and family factors are considered Stroud Homes move on to budget. The team works with their clients to select and adjust plans to suit their budget.
At Stroud Homes, they understand how important build time is to their customers. “We’re not a laid-back building company; we know you’re paying interest, we know you’re paying rent, and we know you need your new home built on time.”
