ENTRANT PROFILE Strong family and community values create a recipe for success

Distinctive projects showcase the skills of the A. Gabrielli Constructions team

A. GABRIELLI Constructions (AGC) have been in the field for some time, and their experience shows in the high calibre of their projects. Founded in 1962 by Angelo and Helen Gabrielli, the company started out in residential housing developments. The couple’s son, Adrian, succeeded his father as managing director in 1987 when Angelo suddenly passed away. Adrian had been working with the company since 1977, initially as an apprentice carpenter, and has fostered his vision for the development of regional economies through infrastructure since his move to management. Now, with a team of 30 people, AGC focuses on commercial and industrial construction work in north and central Queensland. Their portfolio includes anything from schools and offices, to defence facilities, warehousing and refurbishment. “AGC has a long and proud history in North Queensland and we are well-known for our strong family and community values,” commercial manager, Maddalena Gabrielli, said.

Townsville Manufacturing Hub, and Palm Island Bwgcolman Retail Centre. For the Townsville Manufacturing Hub, AGC demolished and refurbished a 230sqm office space in the Bohle TAFE Centre. The Hub includes a director’s office, open office area, concierge, boardroom, lobby, kitchenette, and breakout areas. “The detail in the design helped to make this office a beautiful space to work in, including the feature walls, timber cladding, inlaid flooring and custom signage,” Maddalena said. “We had a great team of tradies who were willing to be flexible and make changes on the fly to support each other, ensuring that no detail was missed in the delivery.” The Palm Island project is also very impressive; a $9.45m retail precinct commissioned by Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council with an ecologically-sustainable design. “Palm Island is a beautiful remote island run from diesel power generation, so it was important to us to ensure that the building design reflected the location, including achieving an environmentally-friendly operating standard and not placing a burden on the local power grid,” Maddalena said. “To do this, we worked with Tippett Schrock Architects to design the building orientation and insulation to maximise airflow and natural cooling for a high energy efficiency rating; Yurika and EQL helped us to develop a solar and battery system that would complement the existing power supply. “It was important not to introduce any foreign vegetation and minimise and fully remove any construction waste.”

AGC credits the support and involvement of the Palm Island locals, the Palm Island Council and John Friend Carpentry for assisting in delivering a low-impact facility for the community.

Building dreams for a living

The industry runs in the blood of the TFA Constructions team

FAMILY-RUN TFA Constructions has a firm belief in the importance of strong foundations – be it for your dream property, or their own business which is built on more than 30 years of the combined experience of director Tariq Ali and supervisor Shane Ali. “You may say that construction is in our family’s blood, and the daily challenges we face are a constant source of motivation and enjoyment,” Tariq said. Running a small yet experienced team, TFA Constructions specialise in commercial projects. Their focus is on childcare facilities and residential sub-divisions, catering specifically to detailed, custom work. “We are focused on the ethical growth of strong partnerships with each of our clients,” Tariq said. “We put a strong emphasis on creating structures that will stand the test of time, while being designed and constructed using the latest practices and sustainable materials.” submission in the Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards.

The Eagleby Kids Early Learning Centre is a state-of-the-art facility which opened last year with an incredible fit-out. It features indoor and outdoor playscapes including an outdoor area with water play,

interior built-in slides, kitchen, an atelier – a specific area for art and design – and even a small stage for kindergarten graduations and performances. Meticulously constructed to be a fun, safe and educational environment in a stunning, contemporary structure, it’s a facility that children, educators and parents alike have

fallen in love with – it was even named one of the Top 50 childcare facilities in the world. TFA Constructions have more recently focused their expertise on residential subdivision development and civil works. The business bought their own earthmoving equipment including excavators, bobcats, dozers, trucks and site sheds to enhance the teams’ capabilities and ensuring longevity in the industry. “We take the hassle out of building; no job is too small, too large or too far.”

“Civil construction was a logical step forward and has helped grow our business,” Tariq said. “Over the years, we have realised that owning your own equipment saves a lot of money in both the civil and construction aspects of the industry.” TFA Constructions’ projects are mainly located on the southside of Brisbane with several works completed in Rochedale, Springwood, Underwood, and Tingalpa, along with northside projects in Eagle Farm, Rothwell and Taigum. Tariq said in industry marred by substandard work, the team at TFA Constructions take pride in producing excellence on every project. “We place very high expectations on ourselves,” he said. “We are proud that we have earned the respect of our clients, peers,

and employees and strive to deliver on our commitment to all stakeholders.

“We undertake a lot of work in-house with our employees, which not only assists in their professional development, but in turn ensures stability within the industry.”

Lory Construction is thrilled to be involved in the Racing for a Purpose program.

Commitment key to success

When speaking with Nick Lory of Lory Construction about his business philosophy, it is quickly apparent he is a man who does nothing in half measures. FURTHER reiterating this is the incredible success of Lory Construction at this year’s Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards.

Nominated in the Commercial Building up to $5 million category and Industrial Building over $5 million category, it is evident Nick and his team employ a clear commitment to high quality and cost-efficient design and construct solutions in every project they undertake.

dedication translates into all his pursuits in life.

Namely, one of his proudest affiliations to date - the Racing for a Purpose program. As key sponsors of Volante Rosso in the Porsche Wilsons Carrera Cup Championship, Lory Construction and Volante Rosso recognised a mutual passion for charity which has since strongly driven the partnership. “The Racing for a Purpose program has been a collaborative effort between directors to combine advertising, motor sport, charity awareness and philanthropy,” Nick said. “This has further intensified the goal to put one car on track with 100 per cent of profits going to various charities, hence Racing for a Purpose.” Since its inception in 2018, The Racing for a Purpose program has donated more than $200,000 to charity, and when it comes Nick’s driving force, there is a very personal motivation spurring on his charitable pursuits. “Lory Construction, being a family-oriented business and consisting of many families with young kids, our heart leans toward anything relating to helping children,” he said. And with plans to reach an even higher target per annum, it seems the sky is the limit for this truly impressive partnership.

And for Nick, it seems this unwavering “Our latest structure has goals to raise $1 million in donations to charity each financial year,” said Volante Rosso director Josh Hunt.

“This is going to be a tall order and may not be achieved this year taking into consideration recent global issues, however we will keep pushing until we do achieve it. The structure is quite simple, as we can provide unique benefits for companies through the race team and more specifically, our Porsche Carrera Cup program. “So far with this program and the help of Lory Construction we have attracted the support of like-minded construction companies, gold companies, private donors, energy companies, and even medical marijuana funds.”

And while the charitable element of his sponsorship is undeniably fulfilling, Nick has been blown away by the experience as a whole.

“Being a sponsor feels as much a part of the team, as an engineer, driver or owner. The excitement, nail-biting stress, highs and lows all form part of the exhilarating experience, all the while knowing that you are behind something much bigger, for a genuine cause.”

“The team has involved us a lot in the process along the way, much more than we anticipated, which really makes you feel like we are part of the team, and not just a sponsor. “We couldn’t recommend it more to anyone else looking to satisfy more than just advertising.” With both companies showing unwavering commitment to the cause and clear passion for truly making a difference, it is an exciting prospect to see what this inspiring partnership will achieve in the years to come.

Every builder strives to do the best they can and winning an award makes it feel pretty special,” Ash said. The two projects won multiple categories in their respected regional awards. They employ two exceptional and qualified carpenters and one apprentice carpenter, and a reliable team of sub-trades and contractors to ensure a seamless build every time. While Michelle takes care of all the estimates and administration, Ash prides himself on a

hands-on building approach for every project. He is at his build sites daily and involved in the ordering and supervision of materials and trades to keep the quality of builds at an all-time high. “Our home designs may ‘look expensive’ but this doesn’t mean we only build million-dollar homes,” Ash said.

The office was fitted with new perforated metal grid ceiling throughout, timber feature walls separating the work areas and green walls added to give the office area a fresh feeling. “Our design consultant came up with some great ideas and I was happy to bring them to reality for her,” Dean said.

McLachlan Homes build each project around their client’s lifestyle

ESTABLISHED in 1997 by director Brad McLachlan, McLachlan Homes’ passion for providing customers with high-quality designs and one-on-one personalised customer services shines through in each and every project. Primarily working in the construction of new homes, the company has built more than 2200 homes for Queenslanders – from the Sunshine Coast to South Brisbane.

“We take pride in offering solutions to a wide range of needs, from small lots, steep blocks, acreage, dual occupancy, and townhouses,” Brad said.

The overall idea is to offer freedom. With a motto of ‘built around lifestyle’, each McLachlan Homes project aims to meet the customer’s individual needs, tastes and budgets. They even permit changes during construction, provided it is possible, without the nasty admin fees. For the Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards, McLachlan Homes entered two recent projects: the Drury residence, and the Hicks and McInerney residence.

Located in Newport, the Drury residence is set alongside the water. “Drawing inspiration from the client’s list of must-haves, wishes, and how they wanted their new home to ‘feel’ was an absolute pleasure,” Brad said. “This stunning design is opulent and contemporary with a modern façade, with elements such as a striking ledgestonecladded brick pier, stunning balcony and a variety of different materials, textures and colours that create a memorable streetscape.” For the Hicks and McInerney property, McLachlan Homes exceeded the client’s expectations with a multi-functioning family

home that is a true entertainer’s delight, with a little something extra. “The finished home has heart, function, and a touch of glamour, with a bold streetscape to boot. “It has been a pleasure providing a unique, contemporary, high-quality forever home,” Brad concluded.
