Message from Rider Levett Bucknall

For over 240 years, RLB has thrived on a foundation of shared values and a commitment to doing things the right way. As we mark our 75th year in Australia, these principles continue to guide us, ensuring that we not only succeed but also contribute meaningfully to the communities we serve.

Our journey has always been about bringing people together – 4,500 diverse and talented individuals who support one another, much like a family. This sense of togetherness drives us to work hard, stand by each other, and make a lasting, positive impact on the world around us. It’s how we ensure that our legacy endures, always evolving to meet the needs of tomorrow.

At RLB, our focus on sustainability isn’t just a goal – it’s a way of life. Over the years, we’ve learned that progress and responsibility go hand in hand. As we continue to innovate, our commitment to sustainability remains at the core of everything we do, reflecting our belief that long-term success is built on the foundation of truth, trust, and collaboration.

Tonight, as we welcome you to the 2024 Property Council of Australia Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation & Excellence Awards, we celebrate not only the achievements of the past but also the promise of the future. These awards are a testament to the creativity, resilience, and dedication that define Australia’s built environment. The RLB Award for Best Public Art Project, now in its third year, highlights our belief in the transformative power of art to build stronger, more vibrant communities.

2024 COPY

With 18 award categories, the Innovation & Excellence Awards shine a spotlight on the exceptional work that drives our industry forward. Each project recognised tonight is a reminder that excellence is not just an aspiration – it’s a shared commitment to making progress that benefits everyone.

On behalf of RLB, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Property Council of Australia for their continued partnership and to the judges who have dedicated their time and expertise to evaluating this year’s outstanding entries. Your commitment to upholding the standards of excellence within our industry is invaluable, and we are grateful for your contributions.

Congratulations to all the nominees. Your work exemplifies the spirit of innovation and excellence that these awards honour. Whether you take home a trophy tonight or not, your contributions have left a significant mark, and for that, we celebrate you.

Here’s to the continued success of our industry, to the next 75 years, and to the lasting legacy we will leave in Australia’s built environment.

History of the Awards

In 1982, as the property industry gathered to present its first annual awards for excellence and innovation, many of the buildings that now shape our skylines, bring life to our cities and energy to local economies were still distant dreams or sketches on the drawing board.

Since then, the Property Council of Australia (originally the Builders

Owners and Managers Association) has been recognising and rewarding excellence. And Rider Levett Bucknall has been the proud sponsor and supporter of the awards program for each of these 41 years.

In 1991, the Property Council’s state-based award programs were amalgamated into a national program to recognise excellence across the country.

From 1991, the Rider Levett Bucknall Australian Development of the Year has been presented to some of the nation’s most iconic buildings:

1991 Advance Bank Centre, ACT

1992 1 O’Connell Street, Sydney

1993 Carindale Shopping Centre, Brisbane and 120 Collins Street, Melbourne

1994 Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, Gold Coast

• Government Leadership

• Heritage & Adaptive Reuse

• Master Planned Communities

• Mixed Use Development

As Australian cities continue to expand, our industry responds to myriad challengers — from delivering affordable housing to supporting Australians as they age, and from improving the environmental sustainability or buildings or creating a rich and diverse workforce.

2023 COPY

As a result, a number of new categories have been introduced.

In 2007, we began to recognise our next generation of talent through Future Leader of the Year Award. In 2010, the Retirement Living and office Workplace categories were introduced, and the following year the Sustainable Development category was expanded to recognise the different approaches taken on new and existing buildings.

In 2012, the Award for Innovation first gained its moment in the spotlight and has since transformed into two awards: one for Project Innovation and another for Development Innovation.

The Award for Best affordable Housing Development was presented in 2015, while the Award for Diversity, introduced in 2016, has been split into two categories in 2017 in response to the number of entries.

In 2022, the Award for Best Public Art Project was revived to commemorate the 40-year celebration of the awards and the longstanding partnership with Rider Levett Bucknall and the Property Council.

2019 International House Sydney, Barangaroo

2020 Investa’s Barrack Place, Sydney

2024 COPY

2021 Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre, Victoria

2022 Wentworth Point Town Centre, Wentworth Point

2023 Brookfield Place, Sydney

In 2006 our awards program evolved once more, rebranded as the Innovation & Excellence Awards to celebrate leading-edge practice and inspire innovation within our industry.

While the categories and number of entrants have grown, and the quality and sophistication of the entries have increased, the underlying aim of the awards remains the same: to support and showcase the developments creating brilliant places for all Australians.

Congratulations to the 2023 Property Council of Australia Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation & Excellence Awards winners:

Message from the Judges

On behalf of the entire panel of judges, I wish to express our gratitude to all the businesses and individuals who participated in the 2024 National Innovation & Excellence

These prestigious awards, which have been a tradition since 1982, aim to acknowledge and celebrate innovation, excellence, and success in the Australia’s built environment.

This year’s awards hold particular significance because many of the projects were designed and, or built, amidst the challenges posed by COVID-19. It highlights the exceptional professionalism of individuals in our industry that, despite movement restrictions and major disruptions to supply chains, these developments were successfully delivered.

These awards represent the culmination of the hard work and dedication of numerous individuals. I would like to express my appreciation to all Property Council members who invested significant time and effort in compiling their entries.
