Toowoomba - the Garden City, one of the best places in Queensland to raise a family, the second-largest inland city in the country. A scenic 90-minute drive west of Brisbane and you’ve arrived, high above the surrounding country with a perfect mix of big city options and small town heart. This guide will help you find the spots the locals love, exploring urban artways and natural hideaways to your heart’s content, with plenty of great food and activities thrown in.

With its cooler elevation, you can experience the diversity of our region from one of many stunning lookouts. You’ll discover broad waterways and bright sunflower farms, native forests and gorgeous escarpments, dotted with quaint hamlets and vibrant country towns, all waiting to be explored and rich with unique stories and envy-inducing photo ops to share with friends back home. Settled in the mid 1800s, Toowoomba grew out of lush agricultural land and generations of farmers continue to call it home today. Harvests of award-winning produce, including wines, olives, cheeses, meats and much more, are enjoyed the world over and loved by locals and visitors at our many farmers’ markets. Enjoy our crisp winters, colourful springs, gentle summers and golden autumns. Home to an exciting calendar of events, you’ll enjoy jazz in vineyards, long table culinary events, art trails, country festivals and of course, our iconic Carnival of Flowers and The Chronicle Garden Competition, all reflective of the gorgeous scenery and community culture. You’ll find there really is something for everyone in our region. So come and find your Toowoomba, we can’t wait to meet you! We acknowledge and respect the traditional custodians of Toowoomba and the Darling Downs region and their elders past, present and emerging. Laurel Bank Park — 50 Hill Street, Toowoomba A One of Toowoomba’s oldest parks (gifted to the city in 1932), Laurel Bank is just a stone’s throw from the CBD, yet offers a green oasis of towering mature trees, topiaries and breathtaking garden designs. Stroll through its many hidden treasures at your leisure, but be sure to include the southeast corner of the park which is home to an expansive scented garden specifically created for people with visual impairments. QLD State Rose Garden, Newtown Park — 147 Taylor Street, Toowoomba An incredible undertaking by the Friends of the Queensland State Rose Garden has seen a glorious transformation of historic Newtown Park over the years into a ‘must-see’ attraction. A fitting acknowledgement for this true labour of love. Queens Park — 43-73 Lindsay Street, Toowoomba Set out across 26 acres of gorgeous rolling hills, tree-lined pathways and sporting fields, Queens Park is recognised as the very heart of Toowoomba’s garden scene. For more unique shopping, a visit to Highfields will hit the mark with the crafty Danish Flower Art, artsy Village Green, and quaint Abbey Lane and Jacaranda House. Smaller shopping centres around Toowoomba offer both main-stream stores and some hidden gems. Try High Street Plaza, Westridge Shopping Centre, or The Range Shopping Centre. For your home-making needs, try the Bernoth Centre or the Homemakers Centre. And we haven’t touched on our farmers’ markets yet, offering handmade goodies and glorious fresh produce, directly from the farm gate. Make these a ‘must do’ on your list!

There’s even a village silversmith and toyshop to explore; and be sure to top off your visit with some traditional Aussie fare of damper and billy tea. Crows Nest Soft Drinks — 8 Charlotte Street, Crows Nest Crows Nest Soft Drinks was established in 1903 under the name of Crows Nest Cordials. Visit us and experience 16 flavours of traditional soft drinks and 33 flavoured syrups. Glengallan Homestead & Heritage Centre — 18515 New England Hwy, Warwick Built from 1864 to 1904 (and restored from ruin in 2001), the gorgeous Glengallan Homestead is a heritage-listed sandstone mansion that has been frozen in time from its earliest days as a traditional pastoral stud property. The Southern Downs Region began as five separate entities: the City of Warwick and the Shires of Allora, Glengallan, Rosenthal and Stanthorpe. In July 2007, the Local Government Reform Commission released its report and recommended that Warwick and Stanthorpe amalgamate. It noted that Warwick was the regional centre for the region, with the maximum travelling time between Warwick and any other town being one hour. On March 15, 2008, the two Shires formally ceased to exist, and elections were held on the same day to elect eight councillors and a mayor to the Regional Council.

You’ll find the balance is just right – beautifully preserved sandstone buildings, the meandering Condamine River, pretty parks and gardens bursting with blooms in spring and summer, and lashings of country town charm with all the trappings of a thriving creative regional city.

Stanthorpe At the heart of the Granite Belt, Stanthorpe gives easy access to big sky panoramas, spectacular countryside dotted with precariously balancing prehistoric granite boulders and a generally cooler, temperate climate (there’s even an occasional winter snowfall!). In Stanthorpe’s CBD, you will discover an amazing range of cafés, shops, gift stores and an art gallery.

Allora Known by the locals as the ‘Best Little Town on the Downs’, Allora has an old-time streetscape filled with history. The author of Mary Poppins, PL Travers, lived in Allora as a child when her father Travers Goff managed the Australian Joint Stock Bank, now known as the Mary Poppins House (c.1880).

Killarney The rolling green hills, glorious mountain views and plummeting waterfalls of Killarney offer one of the region’s most relaxing getaways. You’ll love the village atmosphere and small town charm of the main street, dotted with galleries, cafes, parks and a museum.

Leyburn Known as the town of living history, Leyburn is the site of the 1949 Australian Grand Prix, now commemorated annually in August with the Historic Leyburn Sprints. Leyburn will charm you with its old time feel with many of the buildings dating back to mid- to late- 1800s.

Yangan A quaint rural village (population about 200) at the base of the glorious Swanfels Valley, Yangan offers unique examples of late 1800s timber architecture. Previously named Upper Swan Creek, the town became known as Yangan in 1887, an Aboriginal word thought to mean moving forward or upwards.

Welcome to the Western Downs There are many fascinating stories throughout the Western Downs that have shaped the way we live today. From pioneer villages to art galleries and museums, you can experience these stories across the many towns and villages in the districts of Chinchilla, Dalby, Miles, Tara and Wandoan. From humble beginnings in 1841 as a crossing for Myall Creek (a tributary of the Condamine River), Dalby is a vibrant regional centre with cafes and natural wonders in abundance. Stop by the nearby towns of Bell, Jimbour, with its magnificent country homestead, and Warra’s iconic Queenslander architecture. Further out, Chinchilla is known for its quirky and fun-filled biennial Melon Festival. Don’t be fooled by this small town’s size, it belies its population with the quantity of produce grown in the region. Visit nearby country townships of Brigalow, named after the local brigalow trees, and Kogan with its public artworks and sculptures. Take the road less travelled and you’ll discover some remarkable treasures in the Tara corner of the Western Downs. From an internationally renowned botanic garden to a quirky vintage car museum, Tara and its surrounds are a treat for the senses. Finally, but certainly not least, Jandowae is worth a visit for the second-longest man-made structure in the world – The Wild Dog Barrier Fence – stretching 5614km and passing through Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia.

Home of the spectacular Carnarvon National Park Hidden in the rugged ranges of outback Queensland, just north of Injune, Carnarvon features towering sandstone cliffs, vibrantly coloured side gorges, diverse flora and fauna and Aboriginal rock art. Carnarvon Gorge is an oasis in the semi-arid heart of Central Queensland. Here, towering white sandstone cliffs form a spectacular steep-sided gorge with narrow, vibrantlycoloured and lush side-gorges. Boulder-strewn Carnarvon Creek winds through the gorge. A wealth of cultural and natural heritage lies within this special place. The gorge is home to a range of significant plant and animal species, many of them relics of cooler, wetter times. Remnant rainforest flourishes in the sheltered side-gorges while endemic Carnarvon fan palms Livistona nitida, ancient cycads, ferns, flowering shrubs and gum trees line the main gorge. Grassy open forest grows on the cliff tops. The park’s creeks attract a wide variety of animals including more than 173 species of birds. Rock art on sandstone overhangs is a fragile reminder of Aboriginal people’s long and continuing connection with the gorge. Ochre stencils, rock engravings and freehand paintings include some of the finest Aboriginal rock imagery in Australia. Also within Carnarvon National Park is the stunning Mount Moffatt. This is a remote park of wild and diverse landscapes. Broad, sandy valleys of the Maranoa River are covered with open, grassy woodlands. Striking outcrops of sculpted sandstone rise above the trees. In the north-east of the park, sandstone cliffs lead up to the basalt-topped ridges of the Great Dividing Range. At more than 1000 metres above sea level, the Consuelo Tableland is the highest plateau in Queensland. Spectacular views reveal a sweeping landscape of mountain ranges, rugged peaks, escarpments and gorges. Mount Moffatt’s rich mosaic of open woodlands, forests and plains is home to a huge variety of plant and animal species. This is also a place rich in human history. Aboriginal rock art is evidence of people’s connection with the land that stretches back for at least 19,000 years. All of Mount Moffatt is a living cultural landscape of significant importance to the Traditional Custodians. Stockyards and fences are a reminder of the area’s history as a cattle station.

Welcome to Balonne There is so much to see in the Balonne area, so make sure you leave plenty of time to explore this gorgeous part of western Queensland. Seven special towns — St George, Bollon, Dirranbandi, Hebel, Mungindi, Nindigully and Thallon — will welcome you with open arms and that great country hospitality that Australians are renowned for. So, get ready to say g’day and make your visit truly memorable.

Bollon Rich in rural history and Aboriginal culture, the Bollon Heritage Centre will draw history buffs like bees to a field of sunflowers. Once you’ve seen the town centre, escape the bitumen and ‘become one with nature’ at Thrushton National Park. A playground for campers and 4WDrivers, the park also houses the ruins of Thrushton homestead and the accompanying woolshed which date back to the 1920s.

Dirranbandi Dirranbandi sits at the end of the South West rail line and holds the honour of being the destination of the very last mail train to operate in Australia. Appropriately, the significance of the railway era is acknowledged here at Railway Park, where you’ll find the old waiting room, the original parcels office and the Station Master’s residence (1913).

Hebel The Hebel Pub is the quintessential outback hotel and will prove a memorable stop on your visit to the area. Local legend has it that the infamous Dan Kelly and Steve Hart from the Ned Kelly Gang once lived around the Hebel area and were regular visitors to the pub.

Mungindi When we speak of ‘border towns’, it doesn’t get more literal than Mungindi as the Barwon River runs alongside this unique town and acts as the border between

Queensland and New South Wales. In summer, the town endures the challenge of two separate time zones because of daylight savings, so make sure you have your alarm set correctly if you have somewhere important to be.

Nindigully Almost as famous as its Birdsville counterpart, the Nindigully pub is an iconic part of the Queensland outback and a watering hole you won’t want to skip. After a refreshing beverage, make sure you take a stroll around the Gully Walk.

St George Anyone familiar with the Balonne region knows all too well the therapeutic benefits of the artesian hot springs and the thermal pool at St George will prove a godsend for the weary traveller. First opened in December of 2019, the pool’s warming, mineral-rich waters will soon have you feeling a million dollars and ready to tackle some serious sightseeing.

Thallon Established in 1911 (and named after the former Railway Commissioner J.F. Thallon), the township of Thallon sits neatly between St George and Mungindi and has become one of the most photographed spots in rural Queensland thanks to an endangered local. Situated in the local town park, “William the Wombat” is a towering two-metre high sculpture of the northern hairy-nosed wombat which is found in the area. Another photographic magnet is the commanding Thallon Silos that are part of the Queensland Mural Art Trail. DOWNS & WESTERN VISITORS GUIDE 2022

7 things to do in the St George Region Less than four hours’ drive from Toowoomba, the St George Region, in southwest Queensland, is a welcoming oasis where country and outback converge. Home to 4500 people, it encompasses seven towns, Hebel, Bollon, Dirranbandi, Nindigully, Thallon, Mungindi, St George, all uniquely position on a waterway.

Enjoy a sunset cruise along the Balonne River aboard the Balonne Baroo Andoo with Sandytown River Cruises. Explore Dirranbandi’s River & Rail Precinct which was the destination of the last mail train to operate in Australia. Follow in the footsteps of our First Nations People on a Bollon Cultural Walk. Throw a boomerang, discover bush medicine, historical scar trees and taste gourmet bush tucker. Touch a piece of history at Mungindi’s One Ton Post, an extraordinary monument erected by JB Cameron in 1881 marking the QLD/NSW border.

5 6 7

Tackle a ‘road train’ burger – a whopping 5kg burger, big enough to feed you and 10 of your mates – at the Nindigully Pub which claims to be the longest continually licensed pub in QLD. View Australian realist painter, John Murray’s, artwork at the Hebel Hotel. If the walls could talk, they’d tell tales of the Ned Kelly Gang who are said to have frequented the pub. Capture the colours of the vibrant Thallon GrainCorp Silos. Painted by Joel Fergie and Travis Vinson, aka The Zookeeper and Drapl, the mural celebrates the area’s history.

Welcome to the Paroo Shire Your south-west Queensland outback adventure isn’t complete without a visit to the Paroo Shire. This incredible region is a “must see” for international tourists, grey nomads and camera buffs thanks to its rugged beauty and wide-open spaces. The shire is made up of four unique townships, Cunnamulla, Eulo, Wyandra and Yowah and a visit here is rural tourism at its very best as you take in the history of the area and hear first-hand from the graziers and stockmen/women who work the land. Pull up a seat at any bar and find out from the locals why they wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in the world.

THE SHACK OUT THE BACK “Rumour Has It” is a quirky Tea Room / brica-brac store run by the beautifully eccentric Hellen. Cunnamulla Here’s your opportunity to immerse yourself in a true outback experience. See how a local station operates with plenty of working properties to visit (and stay at) while you explore the area. There’s always cattle and sheep to rangle, not to mention the home cooking and a warm bed that can’t be beaten. With the Warrego River winding its way through the region, you’ll find plenty of spots to drop a line, take your kayak for a paddle or have a refreshing swim, all the while appreciating the true beauty of the surrounding natural bushland and wonders.

Eulo Renowned for the talent of its local artists, a visit to Eulo will see you take home much more than just memories. Beautifully crafted leather works including handbags and belts will capture your imagination, as will the opal art and one-of-a-kind jewellery. The award-winning local honey is also a tasty hit and the natural honey skin products available are sure to impress.

Wyandra For anyone with an architectural bent, the town of Wyandra (100km north of Cunnamulla) will prove a wonderful destination as you explore the many heritage buildings that help create such an appealing township. Previously a railway settlement, you’ll want to check out the powerhouse and the Station Master’s Office, but an unexpected treat is Wyandra’s beach (and that’s despite Australia’s coastline not being within cooee of the area). Instead, a natural sandy strip of the Warrego River will prove the perfect spot to put down a towel and grab some rays or enjoy a picnic as you plan your next adventure.

Yowah The humble Aussie opal is synonymous with Yowah and you’ll find many of the locals of this small, yet welcoming, town are miners/fossickers themselves. Accordingly, there are a number of opal galleries in the area and you can even roll up your sleeves and see if you can find your own ‘Yowah Nut’ in a designated fossicking area near town. Great fun, and incredibly rewarding, if you happen to uncover one of these colourful national gems. DOWNS & WESTERN VISITORS GUIDE 2022

7. Wander the Graham Andrews parklands and Outback Native Timber Walk 8. Step back in time at the Historic House Museum 9. Wander along the Warrego River Walk 10. View the Water Tower mural – part of the Silo Art Trail

Magnificent Murweh Home to more than 5300 people and towns like Charleville and Augathella, the Murweh region is worth the drive out. The main hub of Charleville is a welcoming outback town on the intersection of the Warrego Highway, Matilda Way and at the start of the Diamantina Development Road, Australia’s longest road. It forms part of the Natural Sciences Loop, a drive following trails of dinosaurs, the largest artesian basin in the world, lookouts with 360° views to glistening gems and historical landmarks. Pause a while and immerse yourself in iconic outback experiences from nature to the stars, fishing to history – there’s enough to entice you for a few days or more. Charleville is home to the iconic bilby; see this flagship endangered species up close in their specially built nocturnal house. Visit the School of Distance Education and join the largest classroom in the world, then view the mural on the Water Tower, lit up at night and the weather balloon as it’s released daily and don’t miss the Royal Flying Doctor Base and the Historical House. Maybe even take a scenic flight to see the heart of the Mulga Lands from the air.
