Unconditional
love BY DARREN BURTON
KING FAMILY PROVES THAT NO MATTER HOW HECTIC OUR LIVES CAN BE – LOVE CONQUERS ALL
T
hink things get a little busy in your household? Then spare a thought for the
Kings. Dad Daniel and Mum BJ live the trials and tribulations, the confusion and chaos that raising six children (Brittany 19, Chloe 18, Wade 17, Toby 12, Logan 10 and Declan 8) can bring to everyday life. A family of eight will keep any household in a constant flux of turmoil – getting ready for school and work, lunches to be made, dentist appointments, haircuts, weekend sport, fetes, eisteddfods – the list is endless. There’s just not enough hours in the day – and certainly, very little time for romance. Or so you’d think. Everywhere we turn during the month of February we’re reminded of love and allure and the importance of sharing our lives. It’s a message Daniel and BJ hear loud and clear, because not even the size and demands of their family unit can shut down Cupid’s influence. When asked: “How do you manage finding time to be together?” BJ has a simple, yet telling answer: “We make time”. And therein lies the secret to maintaining a loving relationship – as snowed under as we all get by life, it’s vitally important to set aside special time for partners. “People need to realise they are a
8 | February 2018
couple before they became parents,” BJ explains. “Too many people get so caught up in being parents that they lose who they are as a couple, and that’s where relationships break down. “There is no harm in taking a night off here and there to do something special together.”
It’s a wonderful philosophy, that we all should take to heart, made even more incredible given the King’s youngest boys need extra attention. Through consultations with their paediatrician and a child psychologist, they discovered Logan and Declan were autistic. The disorder is characterised by
www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle
feature | style
challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and non-verbal communication in sufferers and can put a great demand on parents’ time. “When I found out I was sad, but also relieved to have answers,” BJ recalls. And while Logan and Declan share the condition, the behavioural patterns of the boys couldn’t be more apart. “Declan is very shy and quiet and does not do well meeting new people or groups, whereas Logan is overly social and would happily walk off with anyone new,” BJ explains. “So, taking Logan out can be very stressful as he does not have any stranger danger awareness and that can get quite scary. “Then, with Declan, taking him out can cause high anxiety and mood swings depending on where we are going. “Afternoons are hard as both of the boys seem to hold in their emotions while at school and have a lot of meltdowns in the afternoons. “So, that can be hard on the other kids in the house!” Raising a growing family and dealing with the disruptive day-to-day impacts autism can have on a household can take its toll on any relationship. One-on-one time is at a premium because other priorities will always skip to the front of the line, but for the Kings, the romance is just as strong. “We love being together and doing things,” BJ declares. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle
“We were both young when we first got together, so we have grown up with each other. When it comes to our home life, I think we are a mix (of romance and practicality), but definitely head over heels for each other.” BJ and husband Daniel have shared a life together now for 21 years, with eldest Brittany coming on the scene a year after they met. The others soon followed and that cosy (and quiet) household of two became a distant memory.
But BJ insists everyone still needs to set aside time to share with their spouse. “Daniel and I try and have alone time a few times a week,” she said, “and, we go on dates at least once a week.” It’s a fail-safe blueprint for keeping the fires burning while still juggling the gruelling expectations of parenthood. And it’s also a great reminder that true love doesn’t come with an expiry date.

environmental or business challenge. With the importance of nurturing students to be innovative and collaborative, The Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards 2018 encourages teamwork between students, gives students an opportunity to present their ideas to a wider audience and recognises their efforts and achievements. Alongside this, it highlights the importance of study in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering Maths) fields for the future of the Toowoomba region. The awards aim to foster a culture of entrepreneurship among young people in the region through connecting students with opportunities, the business community, camaraderie and support channels. They provide students with valuable experience and knowledge in entrepreneurship, and offer incentives for them to take risks by exploring different opportunities.
THE MAYOR’S TELSTRA TECHNOLOGY AWARDS 2018 JUDGES LOOK FOR NEW AND CREATIVE CREATIVE USES OF TECHNOLOGY
T
oowoomba Regional Council is proud to partner with Telstra, USQ and TAFE Queensland to deliver the inaugural The Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards 2018 exclusively to high schools in the Toowoomba local government area. Open to students in Years 10 to 12 at schools across the Toowoomba region, the awards are a platform for bringing to life problem solving, design, technology and business. Encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship, students grow their ideas through practical learning
and mentoring with industry leaders. The awards are looking for a new and creative use of technology or the next technological idea — it could be a new app, new concepts in social media, gaming technology or robotics. It could be a smarter phone, watch or digital camera. It could even be a revolutionary idea for transport, health, agriculture, security, conservation, construction, energy or recreation. Perhaps, it could welcome the application of existing technology in a novel way to solve a community,

HELPING HAND LET’S MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND CLEAN UP OUR ACT
W
ith its spectacular tree-lined streets and stunning gardens and park lands, the Toowoomba region has long held the reputation for being a truly special part of Australia. That’s why we all need to do our part to help keep it clean and green. Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, March 4, is an opportunity to roll up the sleeves and donate a few hours to help keep our beautiful home looking its pristine best. To get involved, simply go to www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au and register as a volunteer or register a site/location that you wish to be cleaned.
Toowoomba Regional Council will be supporting the day through the removal of bagged rubbish from registered sites. If you are a site supervisor, a council representative will be in contact with you in late February to confirm all your site details, including where any rubbish bags will be for collection. Alternatively, you can dispose of all rubbish collected (at each registered site) for free at any of the staffed waste facilities in the Toowoomba region. All volunteers are welcome to join the day, but please dress appropriately for the conditions (including a hat and sunscreen) and be sure to wear shoes
suited to the area you will be working in (e.g. grassland, creeks, hillsides). And don’t forget your gloves. The success of a day like this is so often dependent on the generosity of volunteers, so if you can spare a little bit of your time, you’ll make a huge difference in the annual fight against rubbish. SCOOP
How did you discover your love for your art? My desire and fascination for creating art came as a child sitting on my aunt’s knee as she worked in her studio at our family home. I attended a Steiner primary school, where creative arts are a focus for everyday work. In high school I excelled in art, being chosen along with 30 other students from across the Northern Territory to exhibit at the Darwin Museum and Art Gallery in 2013. What is it that you particularly enjoy about it? Creating installations that are atypical, intimately shared environments, where I hope to build a life connection between the objects and viewer/s. Through my practice I am able to encourage others and express my own acknowledgement and appreciation for the concepts. Do you dabble in other creative media as well? Yes I really enjoy printmaking and created a series of prints that accompanied the Australian Mangrove Leaves. I also enjoy drawing and I think most artists do need to use drawing in their work to some degree for planning and design. What has your favourite work been so far? That’s a really hard question to answer, each body of work has been driven by a different purpose, with different forms of creation. It’s almost like asking who is your favourite child, there isn’t an answer. Is your family supportive of your endeavours? I am very lucky to have a really strong, loving and supportive family, as well as extended family and friends of the family who are all very supportive. I am very thankful to them; where I am now and who I am now has been greatly influenced by the special people in my life. What is your plan from here in regards to your art? I have recently finished my Bachelor of Creative Arts with a double major in Visual Arts and Music and am now enjoying time in the studio as an emerging artist. I have been working on a commission and my next solo show, to be held in April next year at No Comply Gallery. I was also honoured to be award the Bellmaine French Appreciation Travelling Scholarship in my second year at USQ. This scholarship gives me the opportunity to travel to France and participate in masterclasses/workshops, residencies, mentorship and exhibitions over a year-long period. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

RELATIONSHIPS AND SOCIAL MEDIA BY LAUREN HOPE, GENERAL COLUMNIST
I
think most people will agree that great relationships take hard work. In 2018, the modern family is juggling children, career, household, finances and marriage. We are a time-poor society and with the new advancements in technology we are more contactable and busier than ever (did we really need watches that buzz when we receive an email or text message?).
Now let’s throw social media into the mix. I am an avid social media user; I find it very powerful for business and in my organisation we manage multiple social media accounts on behalf of numerous clients. BUT – what impact does it have on our romantic relationships? Platforms such as Facebook and Instagram allow couples to post status
updates and pictures about their relationship but sometimes it can be a breeding-ground for jealousy, uncertainty and unrealistic expectations. We all know that loved-up couple who post updates of their exotic holidays, beautiful home, great job, perfectly dressed, well-mannered children and emotionally connected husband/wife (often with a killer bod!). I have made the mistake that many do; I started comparing my relationship and unintentionally setting unrealistic expectations which created disappointment and a sense of failure. I mean, surely if he loved me he would constantly declare his love on Facebook! On Valentine’s Day as your feeds fill with #flowers, #love, #romance (too long to list them all), don’t let it influence or define your sense of being. Whether you partake in the traditional Valentine’s Day or celebrate in your own way on another day, just remember that everyone’s relationship is different. Sometimes it’s the smallest gesture that means the most. If you’re regularly comparing your relationship against another on social media, you might need to hit the unfollow button. #happy

WHAT IS AN EXPERT?
THE WRONG KINDA LOVE The media has been bombarded with stories of unwanted affection in the workplace. Whether it is high-profile actors and actresses, or Johnny and Jilly who work at the corner store – it is the ‘wrong kinda love’! Sexual harassment in the workplace is prohibited under several pieces of legislation and the onus of making sure it doesn’t happen, sits not only with individuals, but also managers and business owners. Businesses, managers and owners can face hefty fines for not protecting employees from sexual (and other) harassment. This may not seem fair. Surely people should be responsible for their own actions? I certainly think so, however, for those in positions of power, there is also an obligation to protect others under their care. Businesses (no matter how large or small), need to have core policies and training in place on fundamentals like preventing sexual harassment, workplace bullying and discrimination. If your business does not have these in place, you are leaving your business open to greater risk. For practical, down-to-earth advice on protecting your business and having peace-of-mind, drop us a line at 4765 3456; info@focushr.com.au or call in to the office at 277 Hume Street. 20 | February 2018
I asked Siri and she came up with: “An expert, more generally, is a person with extensive knowledge or ability based on research, experience, or occupation and in a particular area of study”. At Somerville Merrin Neilson Optometrists, we fit that definition because we have six optometrists with a total of over 120 years of experience – and we understand that an eye examination is not just about spectacles. Our experience helps us to find ways of assisting them through these times and offer solutions to help read an electricity bill or a letter from a loved one – simple, but important tasks. However, it’s not just seniors who need our advice. As your child enters their school years, it is important to have their eyes examined. An examination is so much more than simply seeing if the child can read the bottom line of the chart. We will assess the child’s visual system in its entirety to find any areas of difficulty that might slow them down at school. We also prescribe contact lenses, from basic soft disposable options to more complex lenses such as Ortho K lenses (which are hard contact lenses that are worn overnight). When removed, your vision is clear without needing spectacles for the day. Dry eye is a very common problem and often produces symptoms like scratchy and watery eyes, hard-to-open eyes or that annoying, itchy feeling. We can assess this and use both medications and treatments (such as IPL) to help relieve these symptoms. We always endeavour to utilise the best products, and have been using Nikon lenses for a number of years now as we have found the lens’ designs, coatings and materials to be very successful. To the patient, this means better vision and comfort.

BE YOUR OWN VALENTINE BY FELICITY WRIGHT, FASHION COLUMNIST
This year, on February 14, why not do something just for you? Small things have a huge impact.
F
ebruary 14 is typically the day we show that special someone in our lives how much they mean to us. We shower them with gifts, romantic cards and other gestures to declare our love but what steps do you take to show love and care towards yourself? Here are four little tips to help make every day feel like Valentine’s. It doesn’t need to be anything extreme; sometimes the smallest things have the biggest impact. 1. Pucker Up – Do you ever look in the mirror and think ‘who is this tired individual and where did that fabulous
lady go’? If the answer is YES then reach for the lipstick! It’s amazing how a touch of lippy in a great colour can make you feel. 2. Put Down the Can – I don’t know about you but every now and then the idea of washing and blow drying my hair sounds all too hard and I reach for the dry shampoo – crazy because nothing beats the feeling of freshly washed and styled hair! So, on days when the motivation is low, resist the urge. You won’t regret it. 3. List It – We all write lists of things we need to do and at the beginning of the
year some may even make a list of things they want to improve but how often do you write a list of things you are grateful for or things you love about yourself? Give it a go, you will be surprised at how uplifted you feel. 4. Treat Yourself – It could be anything from a new top, nail polish, a magazine or even a coffee from your favourite cafe. Sometimes something just for you can really put a pep in your step. Happy Valentines Ladies Xxx

ultivitamins are a multi billion dollar industry and are consumed by half the population. Marketing promotes multivitamins as having added benefits to health but are they beneficial or money wasters? Many supplements on our supermarket shelves are derived from synthetic sources that our bodies cannot digest – leaving our body unable to metabolise such forms of supplement which end up in the toilet bowl. Many multivitamins are reported to contain harmful metals, anti-doping agents, and microbes. For example, the synthesis of Vitamin E: manufacturers derive this vitamin from synthetic materials such as acetone, citral, methanesulfonic acid, methylbutenol, ammonium hydroxide, and dimethyl sulfoxide. These are highly flammable, cause skin irritations, are corrosive to eyes, skin and harmful to the digestive tract. Therefore it is highly important to be aware of the source of the vitamin being consumed. When we understand the symptoms and lack of nutrients in our body, we can tailor our choice of supplements and the quality of product and experience increased health. It is important to find a trusted naturopath, integrative general practitioner or health practitioner to prescribe the correct supplements. Essential vitamins and minerals are a vital part of a healthy functioning body. If our food choices lack these nutrients we will require some form of supplementation. Within the field of psychology many studies have reported the positive benefits of fermented cod liver oil. Fermented Cod Liver Oil is high in Omega 3, EFA, Vitamin D, Vitamin A and Vitamin E. Children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD often respond positively to the use of fish oil. Results showed children reported increased concentration and lower anxiety. Understanding our symptoms with correct prescription of natural substances found in a supplement form can have a positive effect on our health.

What comes to mind when you think about February 14? Like most people, I’m sure Valentine’s Day is in there somewhere – the day that is universally dedicated to the celebration of love. While this day is usually linked to romantic love and relationships, what about “self love”? Things like depression and anxiety can rob us of the ability to love ourselves. 45 per cent of all Australians will experience some form of mental health issue in their lifetime, and in any year, two million Australians will suffer from anxiety. There are many factors which can influence your ability to cope with anxiety, but help is at hand as there are also many ways to help manage your symptoms.
Symptoms
Anxiety can cause the following: • Emotional – feelings of a high level of distress • Physical – arousal of the nervous system can result in physical symptoms such as an increased heart-rate • Cognitive – thoughts of not being able to cope with a given situation • Behavioural – anxiety may lead to actions which are out of character such as aggressiveness or avoidance.
Causes
Anxiety is usually caused by a combination of factors including: • Genetics – you are more likely to experience anxiety if your parents did • Life experience – difficult life experiences such as family break-up, abuse or bullying can trigger anxiety • Personality – some types of personality styles are more likely to experience anxiety
• Thinking styles – people who have higher levels of expectations are more likely to experience anxiety • Behaviour – people who avoid confronting and dealing with challenges are more likely to experience anxiety.
• make time for friends and family as socialising and talking can help you feel safe and cared for • ensure adequate time for personal reflection and relaxation • learn some breathing techniques to assist you to relax when your levels of anxiety start to increase. If your anxiety levels are still overwhelming you, talk to your local doctor to discuss further options.
Treatment options
The best way to deal with anxiety is to undertake training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with a registered psychologist. CBT will teach you how to react and process challenging circumstances in a more positive way. The following lifestyle changes can also be beneficial: • reduce caffeine intake as this stimulates your nervous system • consume a healthy diet to ensure that you are getting the nutrition that you need for good brain health • ensure adequate time for sleep as tiredness can increase anxiety • undertake regular physical activity as this is a great way to decrease stress levels • avoid alcohol and other drugs as combined with anxiety they increase your risk of acting out of character

Anxiety is an intense feeling of fear of what might happen. Although we all experience feelings of anxiety from time to time, anxiety may become debilitating in some people.

DON’T SKIP THE HARD WORK BY LISA MACHIN, STYLE COLUMNIST
Love, love what a beautiful thing. Until it’s gone.
T
hen it has this way of convincing you your whole worth was built around that love. The only way out of such a state is hard, personal work. But don’t despair, this actually becomes enjoyable and empowering once you get the ball rolling. So here are my tips after a big break-up. 1) Conserve your energy: There’s only one way to deal with this: immediately start declining social invitations that don’t serve you or nourish you in some way.
26 | February 2018
Cut yourself some slack. Sleep in instead, listen to some of your favourite music, and allow yourself to recover. 2) Jam the hamster wheel: Possibly the worst thing about splitting up with someone you love is the circular thinking you can get stuck in. What made you laugh in happier times? Good, download that. Play it. The mind can be taught to change its behaviour. 3) Reconnect with your support pillars:
Life is busy these days and sometimes friends need a nudge. Explain the situation simply – “I’m really struggling at the moment, it would be great if we could take the dogs for a walk together.” 4) Look back and smile: This can be the hardest step, and may not be possible until you’ve dealt with hurt, confusion and anger first. However it’s part of your healing. If you can, reflect on times you shared together that were special. This is part of letting go of them.

A CHANGE OF ROUTINE CAN GET YOU THROUGH How to stay hot this summer without getting too hot
I
open areas to make it a bit cooler for you. If you can, exercise indoors with a fan or air-conditioning. Otherwise, try out an air-conditioned gym.
UTILISE COLD WATER
SHORTEN AND SPLIT WORKOUTS
n this hot weather, it can be very hard to keep up the same exercise routine, and some flexibility needs to be afforded. Here are some tips to make sure your fitness regime isn’t pushed to the wayside this summer. It sounds obvious, but by saying this, there are a few different methods. Take a cold shower before exercising, as this will lower your body temperature. Carry a water bottle with you while you exercise, so when you do start to feel warm, put a little bit of water on the top of your head to cool you down.
KEEP UP THE FLUIDS TO BEAT THE SUMMER HEAT
CHANGE YOUR WORKOUTS
Take the opportunity to try different workouts such as biking in the wind or swimming on really hot days. If you do like to run, do it in shady places such as parks rather than out in
Elly-Rae
Rather than spending a lot of time in the sun in one go and potentially dehydrating yourself, split your workouts into multiple different sessions at the coolest parts of the day. Alternatively, shorten your workouts in the summer if you can’t do two workouts in one day.
STAY HYDRATED
Keep up your water levels so that you avoid dehydration in the warmer months. Avoid symptoms of dehydration by sipping water throughout your workout.

NATURAL REMEDIES TO HELP LOOK YOUR BEST
FOOD FACIALS Raid the pantry for radiating skin PUMPKIN
SINCE 1895
Packed with anti-aging antioxidants and vitamins C and A, the flesh you would ordinarily scoop out can be processed into a thick mask to help hydrate and soften skin. Get two cups pumpkin flesh, four tablespoons low-fat vanilla yoghurt, four tablespoons honey and one teaspoon nutmeg, and blend together in a blender or food processor for a DIY face mask.
YOGHURT
It contains lactic acid which may help clear blemishes and discolouration, and reduce fine wrinkles. Mix one cup Greek yoghurt with two to three drops of almond or olive oil and a tablespoon of honey.
AVOCADO
Avocados are a great source of monounsaturated fats, vitamin B and potassium. They are important for heart health, and also help moisturise the skin. They are also great for dry skin. Mix together one avocado, one egg white, two tablespoons of quick oats, and one teaspoon of lemon juice for a wonderful face mask.
HONEY
Cleansing with antibacterial properties, honey helps the skin retain moisture (and tastes delicious). Mash together half a banana, one tablespoon of oats and one tablespoon of milk (make sure you keep it out of your hair).
GREEN TEA
Green tea has lots of anti-inflammatory compounds and tannins to help reduce puffiness on your skin, while fighting premature ageing. Chill damp tea bags in the fridge and put on your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes.

COLOUR, OH MY! THE SMOKY EYE BACK – WITH A TWIST
T
here’s something for almost everyone with this year’s make-up trends! On one side of the spectrum, soft and feminine colours are in – think rose pink lipstick, dewy highlights, gentle pink blush, and smoky sand-coloured eyeshadow. On the other side is a more notable look, with bold accent pieces. Retro-esque clumpy, heavy lashes will be seen everywhere. To get the look, brush your mascara over your lashes several times and optionally add some bold fake lashes as well. Eyebrows this year take an interesting turn into the world of brushed-up brows. While those of us with thick or bushy eyebrows can carry off this trend without any additions, those with thinner brows may like to add some pencil to complete the look. The smoky eye that was everywhere in 2016 has made a comeback, but with a twist. Black or light, sand-coloured shadows are used around the entire eye – bottom and top – or less commonly, just one simple smudge in the corner of the eye near the bridge of the nose. Eyeliner is taking a step further into bold; line your entire eye heavily with black. You can add a heavy flicked-up cat eye, or just a simple ‘fingerprint’ smudge instead. Speaking of eyes, also on-trend this year is a bold stripe of colour across the upper eyelid using either eyeliner or eye shadow – think emerald, teal, turquoise, bright orange, neon green, lilac, bright purple, and more. Finally, glitter and metallics both show no sign of leaving the make-up world this year. Replace your traditional highlighter with a gold one, or if you aren’t quite ready for that bold step, use a metallic liquid lipstick. Our shiny trend is taking a step up from tiny glitter to using rhinestones to line the eyelid or add accents to cheekbones. Meanwhile, traditional glitter is taking a ‘less is more’ approach with a gentle sprinkle on the inside corner of the eye or on lashes.

Comprising Kingaroy, Nanango, Murgon and Wondai, this area (rich in red volcanic soil) is helping to produce amazing wine and local produce.
EXPLORE YOUR BACK YARD BY NIVARD NELSON, FOOD COLUMNIST
L
et’s all dream for a minute about being able to visit an ancient volcano. Now picture that volcano only 1.5 hours from Toowoomba. Well, that dream is reality because the Bunya Mountains, to the northwest of Toowoomba, is just that place. Raising to an elevation above 950m, this natural beauty is still part of the Great Dividing Range with its mountains (covered by ancient conifer rainforests)
proving the ideal base for exploring the region and all it has to offer. The Bunya Mountains offer a range of accommodation with all levels of comfort. From studio cottages in the forest, to large family homes overlooking the landscape – there are options to suit all group sizes and budgets. While at the Bunya Mountains, take the time to explore the South Burnett Region to the north.
Kingaroy – the peanut capital of Australia: The iconic ‘Peanut Van’ at 77 Kingaroy St, is a must visit. Since 1969, their peanuts have been sold to customers all over Australia and the world – making this is a local success story that we should be proud of (and continue to support). Looking for a great wine to enjoy with the nuts? Why not visit Clovely Estate? Growing both olives and wine, this family owned business is a true jewel in the South Burnett. Becoming a 5-star rated winery by renowned wine critic James Halliday in 2015, Clovely Estate was recognised for their amazing products. Their olives are pressed in the old Murgon butter factory, bringing a sense of the Mediterranean to the South Burnett. In February, let’s get out and support our local regions and the amazing producers we have in the area – you might discover something truly special close to home.

Highlighting & contouring for your
face shape 32 | February 2018
ontouring and highlighting is about enhancing dimensionality. Contouring is used to define or reshape facial structures by darking areas. To contour, I recommend using a flat contouring brush to apply a foundation that is two shades darker than your natural skin tone. Highlighting accentuates facial features by lightening areas of the face. When highlighting apply a lightweight concealer or foundation that is two shades lighter than your natural skin tone, using a flat foundation or concealer brush. Finish by blending these two products with a beauty sponge. When enhancing the dimensions of the face, it is important to make a note of your face shape as this will dictate how you should apply highlight and contouring. This will help draw attention to your best features.
DIAMOND â—† Face highly angular â—† Widest at temples To balance the narrow hairline and pointy chin apply contour under the cheekbones and apply highlighter to the centre of forehead, under the eyes and chin.

SQUARE ◆ Square jaw shape is a prominent feature ◆ Forehead, cheekbones and jawline are almost the same width For this face shape, you want to create the illusion of a narrower forehead and chin. Apply contouring along the hairline, in the hollows of your cheekbones and either side of the jaw. Highlight under the eyes and chin.
OVAL
HEART
◆ Wider forehead ◆ Prominent cheekbones ◆ Face tapers towards chin
◆ Forehead is a prominent feature ◆ Narrow/pointy chin ◆ Widow’s peak
Define the oval appearance by contouring the hairline, the hollows of your cheeks and the jawline. Enhance your cheekbones by the highlight under the eyes and on the chin.
To balance this face shape, sweep the contour down your hairline and taper it under your cheekbones. Additionally, contour under your chin. Apply highlighter to the centre of your forehead, under the eyes, top of the cheeks and chin.
ROUND ◆ Face width and length is the same ◆ Jaw and forehead are rounded ◆ Widest at the cheeks Tends to be youthful in appearance. You can contour the hollow of the cheeks and below the jaw line for definition. Draw attention upwards by highlight around the outer corner of the eyes and accentuate the length of the face by highlighting above the chin.

CARDIAC FUTURE AT ST VINCENT’S CONTEMPORARY NEW LOOK FOLLOWING MAJOR WORKS
W
hat a difference a year makes — a year ago St Vincent’s Private Hospital was about to become a construction site, hoarding was being erected and staff offices and services were being relocated in preparation for the closure of the main hospital entrance and demolition works to begin. Twelve months on and the builders are gone, the hospital main entrance with lift access to the wards has reopened and day-to-day operations and activity in the hospital has resumed. The $30-million Clive Berghofer Operating Theatre Suite is complete and due to be officially opened on February 22 — and what an amazing facility it is.
The hospital now boasts a contemporary new main reception area, six new operating theatres including a state-of-the-art hybrid theatre, and spacious new recovery areas. With the hybrid theatre has come the introduction of a cardiology service in partnership with Heart Care Partners and local cardiologists, Dr Bob Ayres and Hearts 1st. The St Vincent’s Cardiology Service, which will begin with cardiac diagnostics, will develop into full interventional services later in the year. Hospital chief executive officer Kathryn McKeefry said the new Clive Berghofer Operating Theatre Suite and the introduction of a cardiology service

was particularly exciting for the hospital and the community. “We thank Mr Clive Berghofer for his generosity and ongoing support of St Vincent’s — Clive donated $5 million to this project and thanks to this support, our new theatre suite also includes a hybrid theatre equipped with state-ofthe-art cardiac catheter laboratory technology,” Ms McKeefry said. “And once our cardiology service has developed to include full interventional services, in the majority of cases, cardiac patients can be brought to St Vincent’s in an emergency and not need to be transferred to another facility to receive the appropriate treatment, which could be a potential life saver for someone.”

CHANGE THE FLOORS
KEEPING YOUR COOL
ENJOY SUMMER WITHOUT BREAKING A SWEAT
S
ure, most of us have an air-conditioner now, but what about those who want to reduce running costs? The trusty fan is wonderful in mild heat, but often not enough on its own to cool down your home. Here are some tips to keep your house feeling cool in the summer months – and maybe an excuse to re-decorate a little!
UPDATE YOUR BEDROOM
No, this isn’t just an excuse to buy that new quilt cover from the shops that was just so pretty – changing the sheets and quilt cover, even pillows, on your bed
can actually make a massive difference. If you haven’t already, get sheets made from natural fibres like cotton or linen. These breathe a lot easier than man-made fibres, making you feel cooler while trying to get that all-essential shut-eye. The same goes for your quilt cover, but it is also important to take into account colours and patterns. It’s relatively well-known now that ‘cool colours’ trick the brain into believing it’s cooler than it actually is, but darker colours actually absorb light
Plushy rugs on the floor are cosy in winter, but only add to a stifling room in summer. Roll the rugs away during the warmer months and enjoy the cool tiling or floorboards on your feet. Or, if you simply can’t deal with there not being anything on the floor, opt for flat woven mats in fabric or other natural fibres – which are generally cheaper to purchase than plush rugs anyway.
MIX UP THE DÉCOR
Green, leafy plants are great indoors during summer. Not only does the green create the illusion of coolness, but the plants provide shade and improve the air. Pack away the bright reds, oranges, even yellows and pinks, and instead decorate your home with cool shades like blue, teal, green, grey, white, beige and other neutrals. Painting your ceiling and walls white can make a big difference, as white reflects light and heat rather than absorbing it.

HOW BIG? Ample space for the growing brood with five seats. HOW FAST? All variants feel punchy and all perform well. HOW THIRSTY? The diesel is a miser, but the petrol versions aren’t too heavy either. HOW MUCH? The Outback 2.5i starts at just $40,380 d/away with the 2.5i Premium from $46,500 drive away.

W
ithout doubt, this is one of the best family wagons on the market. Although we won’t call the Subaru Outback a wagon. For all those fashion savvy buyers, it’s an SUV – the style of vehicle which is dominating the Aussie landscape. But really, it’s essentially a high riding estate (see, that’s European and far fancier). On the subject of extravagance, that’s what you get from the Premium variants of Subaru’s Outback. Well equipped with the likes of a Bluetooth and MP3 compatible
six-speaker CD stereo with voice command, dual zone air-con, paddle shifters, alloys, sunroof, leather trim, power cargo door, heated front seats and sat nav… it’s an impressive option for the savvy family or active lifestyler. From all angles, the Outback delivers plush without the hefty price tag. In Premium guise, it’s available with three engine choices: a diesel, 2.5-litre four-cylinder or the range-topping six-cylinder petrols. All offer strong performance, and our experience behind the wheel can find
little weakness in the trio. Smooth shifting and strong powertrains make long journeys a cinch. The sizeable cabin ensures four adults find ample space, and you could squeeze in three across the rear bench. Leather trim comes standard on the Premium models, which is brilliant for families. The seats can be somewhat flat for some tastes. Analyse the performance, specifications and a strong reputation, the Outback offers brilliant value for money in a fashionable package.

And now, just to recap...
O
ver the past 12 months, we have gone step by step through the process of turning a vacant block of land into a new home. Now is a good time to take stock of what we’ve all learnt in the process, and reflect on where this exciting journey will ultimately take you. As a dedicated energy efficient builder, it’s part of our exciting journey too. We started with what to look for when choosing a block of land. Not all bare blocks of land are equal. It had to meet some vital criteria — especially so that it didn’t increase your building costs due to poor soil type, difficult and expensive site levels and wrong orientation. Having found the perfect block, we went through the process of designing your ideal home. Most of all it had to suit your land, lifestyle and budget. We also looked at the vital importance of getting your house plan correct and knowing exactly what’s included, or excluded, before signing a contract. Because these articles are all ultimately about improving energy efficiency and therefore reducing your ongoing energy costs, we considered the importance of using renewable building materials, the different types of insulation products, including glass, and how to increase thermal mass in your construction. Getting these factors right has a significant beneficial bearing on the final outcome — your new energy efficient and sustainable home. Continuing on we discussed how the right choice of internal fittings — the likes of kitchens, tapware, lights, window dressings and carpet — also has a bearing on the overall efficiency of your new home. We explored the assortment of hot water systems, photovoltaic panels and battery storages, even landscaping. As our monthly series of brief, home-building articles over the last year have come to a conclusion, I hope you have enjoyed reading and discovering more about how easy it is to build a genuinely energy efficient home.
It’s been a pleasure for us too, as it is always good to keep the big picture in view. Sharing with you some of the amazing cost-saving discoveries we’ve made over our numerous years of research into this fascinating subject has once again proven to us that building an energy efficient home should be essential, not merely an interesting option. In fact, we are committed to the view that it will become essential for every new home, as we steadily move toward self-sufficient homes. Therefore in the future, a home designed properly as sustainable and energy efficient will have greater value than one that’s not. Tellingly, the first thing new home owners say after we’ve built them a new energy efficient home is that the process was not half as scary as they thought it could be. They appreciated they were engaging with a local innovative building company, happy to always listen and answer questions no FINALISTS matter how strange they sounded. DISPLAY HOME ENERGY EFFICIENCY If you have missed any of these articles, they have all been listed on our website www.geoffgibsonhomes.com.au with the Look for this column permission of our good friends at Style in next month’s Style... magazine. we’ll be featuring an energy efficient homeThis coming year, we are going to delve builder sharing their deeper into the mysteries of each subject, own personal building revealing their simple, profound truths.

ONLINE MEETING TURNS INTO A NEW LIFE TOGETHER
BY JESSICA KRAMER
WHEN YOU JUST ‘CLICK’... D
ean and Suzzanne (nee Van Bael) Stoodley had a wonderfully country wedding at Adora Downs, Mt Tyson, in early October last year. The young couple met online over three years ago, and decided to meet in person at Wilsonton Hotel — and the rest, as they say, is history. “I knew I wanted to marry Dean after seeing him fit into my values and beliefs, and I knew I couldn’t part ways with him,” Suzzanne says. “Dean is a very thoughtful and caring person who will do anything for me.” Dean shares the same appreciation for his new spouse.
“(Suzzanne is) amazing and beautiful, very smart and intelligent,” he says. These traits shone through with the wedding proposal. “I had a hunch Dean was going to propose, and then began searching the car for the ring box,” Suzzanne recalls. “We both had a really good laugh because he knew I wouldn’t find the box — Dean proposed at the top of Picnic Point; he had the ring sitting in his pocket without the box.” The theme of the wedding itself was country, with centrepieces and bouquets all containing succulents —

Suzzanne’s favourite plant — and the wedding cars all being HiLuxes. “I made all of the centrepieces, bouquets for the bridesmaids and button holes for the groomsmen myself,” Suzzanne says. “My mum, who enjoys cake decorating in her personal time, made our cake. “Attached to my bouquet was two rings which belonged to my grandma who passed away in 2009, who I still hold very dear to my heart.” At this stage, the newlyweds are hoping to travel both overseas and locally, and Suzzanne has also begun university studies.

A NIGHT AT THE DRIVE-IN WILL BRING BACK SPECIAL MEMORIES
BORING TO ADORING Now’s the perfect time to relight the fire in your relationship
Y
ou’ve been together for 20 years – you know what she’s going to say before she says it, she knows what you’re going to do before you do it. That’s what true love is all about, but wouldn’t it be nice to freshen things up this Valentine’s Day? Here are a few ideas to rekindle that love and celebrate why you came together in the first place.
GO HORSEBACK RIDING
Even if you’ve never ridden before, there are plenty of stables that will assist you with lessons, equipment and horses with a temperament to match your experience. Staff can lead you on a guided ride through the tranquillity and beauty of local bush trails or, better yet, head to the beach and ride along the shore with the waves crashing at your feet.
GO TO THE DRIVE-IN
TAKE A BALLOON RIDE
There’s nothing as romantic (or exhilarating) as silently floating into the heavens as you watch the sun break over the horizon. The solitude and privacy creates an overwhelming sense of togetherness. Even if you’re sharing the flight with others, you’ll still feel like the only couple in the world.
VOLUNTEER TOGETHER
There are a host of charity organisations out there that would love some assistance. Helping others is good for the soul and a great way for you and your partner to share the love that comes from making someone’s life better.

If you’re old enough to remember going to the Drive-In on a date, memories of snuggling up as you watch the show will soon come flooding back. If you’re not old enough to have enjoyed the experience, you don’t know what you’re missing. Find the nearest Drive-In (yes, they’re still out there), park the car for optimal viewing and take in the rarity of a double feature. Who knows, you might even watch the movie this time.

rue romantics can probably ignore this story, because no doubt you’ve already booked your string quartet, 50-rose bouquet and sky writing in preparation for Valentine’s Day. But for the rest of us (without a clue of what to do), February 14 is charging ever closer, so here are a few Cupid-inspired gift ideas to impress the love of your life:
IF YOU’RE A ROMANTIC
◆ Recreate your honeymoon or first date. Return to that special place and let all those wonderful memories come flooding back from when you first became an item. ◆ Break out the popcorn, crank over the DVD player or Netflix and get those rom coms happening. Undoubtedly you have a favourite (and, if you don’t, now’s the perfect time to find one). ◆ Learn a new language together. Better yet, plan an exotic trip away where you can actually use your newly acquired linguistics.

◆ Foot spa/massager – After a hard day at work, there’s nothing more relaxing than a soothing foot massage. Go on, spoil those tootsies. ◆ Waterproof shower radio – You sing in there anyway…why not have some proper music to go with the performance. ◆ Suitcase – Yes, on its own we admit it’s a little ho-hum, but having a strong and sturdy travel companion for your next travel adventure is essential. ◆ Touch screen gloves – This is a great accessory for the colder months. It allows you to still use your iPad or send text messages on your phone without the hassle of taking off your gloves. Genius. ◆ Wireless headphones – Perfect for the bedroom or even the loungeroom, as they let you watch TV without disturbing your partner if they’re sleeping or reading.

ON THE BIG SCREEN
BASED ON ONE OF THE WORLD’S BIGGEST SPORTING SCANDALS
GREAT AUTUMN READ AND ON THAT BOMBSHELL
BY RICHARD PORTER It was a car show with a difference; even roping in viewers previously not interested in the automobile world. Marking the end of the Top Gear era with Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May, the TV series’ script editor has written an inside look of the show as this book. But And on that bombshell is far from a dry and dull tome on processes and equipment. Instead, it shakes up the stereotype of its book genre with that old beloved Top Gear trademark – humour. Even if you are not a fan of the show or its ex-presenters, this book is still a fantastic read as a humorous insight into the world of television.
I, TONYA
Release date: Thursday, January 25 Genre: Biographical drama Cast: Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, Mckenna Grace Running time: 119 minutes In 1994, one of the biggest scandals in sporting history occurred – a calculated attack on champion ice-skater Nancy Kerrigan, aimed at crippling her and forcing her to not participate in the Olympics. Many years later, this tale of bitter rivalry gone wrong has inspired the biopic I, Tonya. The film is set around Kerrigan’s main competition, Tonya Harding, whose ex-husband was charged with hiring the hitman responsible for Kerrigan’s injury. This eventually led to Harding losing her ice-skating career. Previews of the film have already received an average rating of almost eight out of 10, with most reviewers commenting that I, Tonya, finds humour in the story without losing sight of the more emotional elements.
FRESH SOUNDS ADAM AND BROOKE Release date: Friday, February 9
Husband-and-wife music-makers Adam Eckersley and Brooke McClymont pictured themselves growing old and making music together, but their first collaboration – an album fittingly titled Adam and Brooke – came about earlier than expected. Both Grafton natives are accomplished musicians in their own rights; Adam heads up the Adam Eckersley Band while Brooke is one third of the acclaimed country music trio The McClymonts. The songs on Adam and Brooke are a melding of styles, Brooke’s being more classically country while Adam veers more towards the rock/alt-country genres. Lyrically, they capture the couple’s busy life as touring musicians and parents to daughter Tiggy. Toowoomba’s Highfields Tavern will host the duo on May 19 as part of their album tour.

A MALTESE EXPERIENCE W
ith a coastline sheltered by the Mediterranean, Malta is a small country south of Italy with loads of history. Toowoomba resident Mary-Ann Zammit recently visited Malta, where she visited family and revelled in her Maltese heritage. While on holidays, Mary-Ann delved into Malta at full speed under the clever guidance of her family. She discovered Hagar Qim, an archaeological site dating back to 3200BC, and was amazed by the unique Tarxien Temples. A replica is now on display of the Mosta Dome, a church that survived a direct bomb hit when the bomb did not explode. Malta is surrounded by forts and bunkers as it was the most bombed

nation during World War II. “The most memorable one for me would have been the World War II bunkers at the site of the St Paul’s Catacombs, the largest Roman underground cemetery in Malta,’’ Mary-Ann said. “On the day I visited I was informed one of my aunties was born in these bunkers. “St Paul’s Grotto is also located on this site. It is where the apostle Paul took refuge after being wrecked off the coast of Malta.” Malta has a Christian background and churches are prominent. They are lavishly decorated on the inside, unlike Italian churches, where they prefer their patrons to be focused on the service rather than the decorations. Malta is known for its beautiful food,
and Mary-Ann tasted some renowned delicacies, particularly at Elia Cafe, recommended by her father. Founded in 1953, the cafe is still run by the same family. Mary-Ann recommends trying their pastizzi and cannoli, along with Kinnie, the national Maltese beverage. When travelling to Malta, Mary-Ann suggests taking your own hand sanitiser and tissues or toilet paper as a lot of public toilets don’t offer them. Alongside this, plan ahead for Maltese weather – it can often have four seasons in one day, and definitely bring an umbrella. “Definitely try as much Maltese food you can – you can buy Italian food anywhere,” Mary-Ann said. “I was able to bring back Maltese sweets I cannot buy in Australia.”

to lower my tax on investments”, and you have to say, “that’s unfortunate because there could be a very long wait in the family court system”. While there are exceptions and interim measures you can take, the starting point would be you presently own nothing and until that final hearing and a property alteration is made, your wife/husband owns everything.
MONEY MISTAKES COUPLES MAKE
EYES OFF THE MONEY
oney is usually a distant second to the whirlwind of love. But people in their 20s and 30s are just as prone to financial heartbreak as older couples, and frequently, costly mistakes are setting their financial goals back years.
Consider making any cash advance a properly documented loan, not a gift, or take a direct interest in the property (ie, become co-owners). Or if it is a gift, be very specific in writing about who the gift is for.
The most important advice to a couple is, don’t lose your networks. Your best asset is — and will always be — your capacity for personal exertion or income. And watch the finances, always. We see circumstances all the time when one spouse controls the finances. It’s important to be across your super, mortgage, investments and general debts, so that you don’t have to play catch-up if things go awry.
More and more, parents are loaning or advancing money to children to help them acquire real estate. But if the couple separates, things often take a nasty turn when the parents want the money back. Otherwise you can have this awful situation of family court litigation against in-laws.
When it comes to structuring your wealth for tax avoidance, it might be advisable to steer clear of this. Many people structure their affairs for tax purposes or insolvency reasons. We come across circumstances where we hear, “I put everything in my wife or husband’s name in case I got sued and

ongoing financial security. For those of us who see people at one of the most difficult points in their lives, we don’t want to see the new love dimmed by dispute when it can be very easily sorted out (if the worst was to happen later) at any early date. Things such as mutual debts, tenants in common (instead of joint tenancy) when purchasing property, and wills and estates should all be considered, along with beneficiaries for superannuation and life insurances. At the end of the day, there are very few of us who would not wish for our
children and other family members to be appropriately protected if the worst was to happen. Such discussions can be hard to start, but in a majority of occasions can be undertaken in a friendly and amicable basis – after all, what everyone is doing is protecting themselves, their families, and their new romance. At the end of the day who doesn’t want to stop a dispute if they can? While the romance continues, and the flowers bloom, ensure you seek the advice you need.

t’s the time of year again for love, with the romance of Christmas and holidays, and Valentine’s Day just around the corner. The excitement and joy of the new beginnings (or older stability) of romance and love should not bring concern for the future, although for those of us who have previously had relationships that have ended, there can be. “Never again” is often the last thing that people say to me as a family lawyer at the end of their matter. Although over the years I often see those same people some time later with a new de facto partner or married and, for the unfortunate few, in a situation of separation once more. If you are one of the many that fit into the previously separated category (for want of a better phrase), it is important, for your wellbeing and that of your children, that you consider how your new love is going to impact on both your personal family situation as well as your

LOVE BITES
A FEW SIMPLE IDEAS TO HELP PREVENT CONFLICT IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP
S
hakespeare told us “the course of true love never did run smooth” and anyone who has been in a relationship will soon be nodding in agreement with the bard’s wise words. Sadly, as mere mortals governed by our emotions, it’s inevitable that conflicts, disagreements or silly misunderstandings are going to creep into our lives – quickly testing the mettle of any loving union. Next time you find yourself at odds with your partner, just remember these helpful relationship savers:
Communication is key Talk it through calmly and logically, identify the problem in passive, non-confronting words and then let your partner respond (without interrupting). Even if you don’t agree with the counter argument, you can hear a different perspective to your concerns – ultimately creating a platform to work from. Make sure everybody wins Instead of looking to change your partner, see where you might be able to
change to help resolve the issue. Establish what is important to both of you and then offer solutions to reach that common ground. By creating a win-win strategy to achieve a ‘greater good’, you can move past any initial conflicts or reservations and work together. It’s okay to take a break If things are getting too heated, a time-out is a necessary (and extremely helpful) way to prevent a minor disagreement escalating into a full-blown battle. Be sure to agree beforehand that you will both step back and take a time-out if one of you becomes too upset or overwhelmed. If the need arises, stop the discussion immediately and head to your respective corners. Go for a walk or to the gym, watch some TV in separate rooms or read a book, but agree to return to the conversation once you’ve both settled down. Don’t make it personal Nothing is going to be achieved by trading insults. Avoid put-downs or throwing blame at your partner. Don’t kill the chance for a productive conversation because you let ‘school yard’ insults derail the reconciliation.

to win at the love game than take the bull by the horns with a romantic meal, bottle of wine and watch the fireworks.
bolt from the blue but once smitten you will be grinning like a Cheshire cat.
GEMINI
Sept 24th – Oct 23rd 2018 sees big changes in your love life. If in a relationship, now is the time to possibly think about a real commitment by naming the day. Everyone loves a wedding which could be taking place in 2019; it is entirely up to you just remember all things in moderation.
IT’S IN THE STARS
May 22nd – June 22nd Just like a Gemini you need variety in your life; someone who is practical, caring, imaginative and downright romantic when need be. Think of a Prince Charming guy with a tool belt that could rival a major wizard at Hogwarts. Love is magical with the right person by your side, so gather up your supplies and explore some mystical realm together.
AQUARIUS
CANCER
Jan 21st – Feb 19th Your love light glows this Feb, so be prepared to take your relationship to the next level; it could be a brilliant time for showing off that new accessory. Diamonds are a girl’s best friend after all.
PISCES
Feb 20th – Mar 20th Pisces, it is time you decided to settle down with a good book and think about the direction your love life is taking. Loving you is the easy part; it is getting to know all of your weird and wonderful ways that is difficult.
ARIES
Mar 21st – Apr 20th Loving for Aries is a ritual. It involves your partner to be on the same page romantically speaking. Learning to love with the beautiful ram of the Zodiac can be tricky as you usually fall for the wolf in sheep’s clothing.
TAURUS
Apr 21st – May 21st Love me tender comes to mind with Taurus. You may be staunch and stubborn, but deep down you are a softie when it comes to romance. There is no better way
June 23rd – July 23rd Love is in the air — famous lines but so true. Cancerians are hopeless romantics; you love nothing more than to be pampered with flowers and jewellery all the way. Lucky in love, it is easy for you to find such a dreamboat as your natural good vibes attract people to you like a moth to a flame. Shine on you crazy diamond.
LEO
July 24th – Aug 23rd Love for Leo is commitment — no pussyfooting around for you; it is either 100% or nothing. Just like you to be selective though, but the person who wins your heart has it for life. That doesn’t mean you will curtail you flirting; they just learn to live with it. It is a little like window shopping — just looking not interested in buying.
VIRGO
Aug 24th – Sept 24th Romance is a dance under the stars; while you have a practical side you show to the world, when in love you lose your head and it is wonderful. So if someone is coming into your life, that will make you look at life and love differently. They may be like a
LIBRA
SCORPIO
Oct 24th – Nov 22nd Snap! You come out with that sting in your tail — it is good to be wary. Scorpios are very sensual people and can quite easily attract many admirers from afar with your radiant beauty. However they best be warned — don’t mess with you or they will feel the sting of a Scorpio. Ouch.
SAGITTARIUS
Nov 23rd – Dec 21st It has taken all this time to be sure the right person is in your life. Sagittarians love adventure; seeking out like-minded partners. If you are going to do back flips off a huge cliff then you need someone who is either waiting at the bottom to catch you if you fall or who is going to take the back flip with you. Just like Cupid, you carry the bow and arrow; if it is love you are hunting then you are ready.
CAPRICORN
Dec 22nd – Jan 20th Goats are stubborn if in a relationship. They would rather stay with the old than be adventurous and seek out new company. If single, go mingle — you never know who could be waiting around the corner. It just takes one small step outside of your comfort zone and the rest is history. - Lunar
