D

r Sharyn Donaldson is running late to receive her award at the annual International Women’s Day luncheon. Today, she is a working as a general practitioner and her appointments have run over. Club president Katherine Galea doesn’t seem to mind. “We can all get busy,” Katherine says. “Sharyn was one of many high-calibre applicants this year, it’s incredible what women are doing for the local community and they are all very humble and just quietly getting on with it. “However, Sharyn makes a significant contribution over such a broad range of areas. She really embodies what Zonta is all about, which is raising the status of women and helping them improve their lives.” Sharyn is certainly a worthy recipient. The principal doctor at St Andrew’s Hospital’s Diagnostic Breast Clinic, she also makes time as a general practitioner. She is CEO of Blush Cancer Care Inc and owner/manager of café, catering and cooking school The Sauce Kitchen. For the Style cover shoot I meet Sharyn at Sauce. The cafe has a casual, homely atmosphere where the cooks work in an open space preparing food and making coffee. “Sauce really grew out of a passion but has given work to some long-term unemployed and attempted to reinvigorate supporting ventures in our local community,” Sharyn says. “I think baking and creating food also allows women to come together, often in times of crisis, to support others and give back to others.” Instrumental in the establishment of the Diagnostic Breast Clinic at St Andrew’s Hospital in 2000, supporting women in times of crisis is a cause close to Sharyn. Since the clinic’s inception the quality of cancer screening and care in the region has improved dramatically. More importantly though, Sharyn says the team has been able to empower and educate women in their choices regarding breast cancer screening. “We also are empowering women to have ‘bad news’ delivered in a much more optimal setting with instant results and support through all stages of diagnosis.” Realising the need for additional funding, Sharyn started Blush Cancer Care Inc in 2012 to raise money to go directly back to local patients. “Blush at its core is a small group of women who volunteer to raise funds and host functions,” Sharyn says.

“We liaise very closely with both St Andrew’s and St Vincent’s and the medical and allied health professions involved in the care of the patients, so funds raised are prioritised to areas of need.” “For example,” Sharyn says, “we co-fund the wages of the breast care nurses at St Andrew’s and St Vincent’s Hospitals and these nurses are integral to the care of patients from the time of diagnosis, at all stages of their treatment. “They help patients move towards healthier lifestyles through education, practical and emotional support. They probably have made the biggest impact in the care of the breast cancer patients; they work as psychologists, social workers and liaise between patients, specialists, general practitioners and more.” Sharyn says acute inpatients receive a Blush Bundle at the start of their treatment, which along with a few pampering products, has a Blush diary allowing them to track their appointments and investigations. “In the first six months of treatment patients can have up to 50 appointments, so the idea was to help them get organised and in turn feel more in control.” Last year, Sharyn expanded the reach of Blush with Blush goes Bush. Medical forums were held in Warwick, Goondiwindi, St George and Roma. “Rural women with breast cancer have

poorer survival outcomes, unmet psycho-social needs, difficulty accessing breast care nurses and allied health services.” And this year Blush, in partnership with Queensland X-ray and local gym Fitlab, debuted the Fighting Back with Fitness program, which offers 12 women at a time to attend a 10-week program of personally prescribed exercise. “We have one patient currently going through acute treatment, who will stay in Toowoomba specifically so she can do this program. She said it’s the only thing that has got her through the treatment. “We are looking to facilitate a hundred women over the next two years through this program and hopefully beyond,” Sharyn says smiling. “It’s very exciting. And it’s empowering for women, which is what we aim to do. So through education and support they can choose their own pathway to navigate through breast cancer.” THE ZONTA CLUB OF TOOWOOMBA FACEBOOK: ZONTA CLUB OF TOOWOOMBA INC INSTAGRAM: ZONTACLUBOFTOOWOOMBA BLUSH CANCER CARE INC FACEBOOK: BLUSH CANCER CARE INC INSTAGRAM: BLUSH_CANCER_CARE THE SAUCE KITCHEN WWW.THESAUCEKITCHEN.COM.AU FACEBOOK: THE SAUCE KITCHEN INSTAGRAM: SAUCEKITCHEN

THE CHANTEUSE IS SET TO DELIGHT AUDIENCES UNDER THE STUNNING BACKDROP OF JIMBOUR HOMESTEAD

DAY ON THE PLAIN Join Wendy Matthews at the Jimbour Amphitheatre to hear some of Australia’s best rock ‘n’ roll artists - Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wilde, Richard Clapton, Glenn Shorrock, The Eurogliders and Joe Camilleri and the Black Sorrows. ou can sense Wendy Matthews’ sincerity and warmth – even over the phone, and I immediately feel at ease. I’ve been nervous about this interview. Not only did the Canadianborn singer feature heavily in the soundtrack of my childhood, her hauntingly beautiful The Day you Went Away is still the one song, after all these years, that can immediately reduce me to tears. Which can be a problem – when I’m grocery shopping. Wendy laughs when I tell her. “That happens to a lot of people, it’s special like that,” she says. In early May, the iconic musician with a career spanning over 30 years, will join friends and fellow troubadours for the inaugural Day on the Plain Festival at Jimbour Amphitheatre. She’ll share the stage with Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wilde, Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows, Richard Clapton, Glenn Shorrock and The Eurogliders in a day

dedicated to Australian rock. “I’ve heard the space is quite spectacular and outdoor festivals really are my new favourite thing,” she laughs. “It’s so nice to be outside with the grass under your feet and sunshine and good food and family. “It’s such a different experience from the dark, night-time club scene.” “It’s a bit like getting the old gang back together, we always have fun,” Wendy says of good friend Grace Knight (The Eurogliders). “She’s not only talented – she’s a great human being.” “And I’m still very good friends with Glenn (Shorrock), I stay with them whenever I’m in Sydney.” It was Glenn in fact, who discovered a teenage Wendy when The Little River Band passed through Los Angeles. At the time, she was working as a session singer and selling hand-made jewellery on Melrose Avenue to make ends meet. Glenn asked her to sing backing vocals www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

It means so many things to so many people. And when I perform it I feel like I can really connect with my audience. I usually focus on a few people when I sing that song and I can look in their eyes and see that it means something to them.” on his solo tour. Wendy toured in Australia, found work in Sydney and stayed. During the 1980s she went onto work with some of the biggest Australian artists of the time including Icehouse, Richard Clapton, Tim Finn and Jimmy Barnes. She additionally featured on some of the best-selling Australian albums of the era, performing vocals on The Rockmelons’ Tales of The City and You’ve Always Got the Blues, an album of duets with Kate Ceberano. In the late ’80s she recorded lead vocals on I Don’t Want to be with Nobody but You, with Absent Friends, a collaboration between herself and then-partner and Models band member, Sean Kelly. After a year or so, Absent Friends disbanded and in the early ’90s and Wendy recorded her first solo album, Émigré. The singles Token Angels and Let’s Kiss (Like the Angels Do) became www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Top 40 hits. Her biggest hit was yet to come. For her follow-up album, Lily, Wendy was sent a song from a British electronic act. The Day you Went Away was originally a dance track that Wendy slowed to a piano ballad. The song went on to be the biggest-selling Australian single of 1992 and ARIA’s Song of the Year. More importantly Wendy says, listeners developed an emotional attachment to The Day you Went Away and the song is still being rediscovered by younger generations. “You really couldn’t get away from it on the radio for a few years there,” Wendy laughs. “The response I still get from it is beautiful.” Leaving Sydney and moving to a property near Coffs Harbour in 2003, Wendy started her own music label and has released several albums since.

She, released in 2008, is a collection of songs by her favourite female artists including Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt. The Welcome Fire (2013), Wendy’s first album of original songs in 12 years, saw soulful and poignant collaborations with Josh Pyke and Megan Washington. Her latest offering Billie and Me: The White Room Sessions, delves into the beautifully crafted songs of Billie Holiday, recorded over two days in a huge, empty piano factory. Wendy says she is writing an album in between performing all over Australia. “I’ll be performing a little bit of everything, some newer songs as well as some of the old ones,” she says of her performance at Jimbour. “I like to mix it up a bit, but I think audiences always like hearing the songs they are familiar with.” April 2018 | 11

FLYING THE FLAG T

he Curve-Ball black tie fundraising event is back again, bigger and better in 2018. This year The Curve-Ball will be held at the iconic Queens Park on Saturday, May 5, and will draw a crowd of more than 1500 attendees, donning gowns and tuxedos to support a worthy cause. The inaugural Curve-Ball was held in 2017 at Rumours International and held host to more than 700 attendees, raising $70,000 for that year’s chosen recipient and charity. Each year the funds from this glamorous event will be distributed between a chosen charity and a local recipient who is deemed to have been thrown a life curve-ball.

Our 2018 Curve-Ball recipient is 21-year-old local man Zach Nightingale, who was thrown a huge life curve-ball in December last year when a horrific motorbike accident left him fighting for his life. Zach’s extensive injuries meant the loss of his right leg and part of his right pelvic bone and hip. Zach has shown incredible resilience, having spent the past three months of his life in hospital with a long road to rehabilitation still ahead of him. The Curve Ball committee is proud to announce that in addition to recipient Zach, the committee’s charity of choice for this year’s event

is The Royal Flying Doctor’s Service, tying in perfectly with their 90-year celebrations. In particular, the proceeds donated will go towards the RFDS’ efforts to bridge the gap in access to vital mental health services throughout rural communities. Your ticket to the 2018 Curve-Ball includes a five-hour drinks package, canapes, entertainment and a guaranteed fantastic night. CURVE BALL WHEN: SATURDAY, MAY 5 FROM: 5PM TO 10.30PM WHERE: QUEENS PARK COST: TICKETS ARE $140. EVENTBRITE.COM.AU

LOCAL ARTIST TOM GILLESPIE LOCAL BAND VENICE ON FIRE HAS HAD A CRACKING YEAR

How did you discover your love for music? Personally, I discovered most of my early music through Mum and Dad. Dad has been a professional guitarist for more than 40 years, and Mum had great taste. My first discovery of rock music was Dad putting Billy Idol’s Rebel Yell on, and I’d dance around his studio as an eight-year-old. How long have you been playing for? I’ve been playing guitar since I was about 15. I was never really interested in it until my sister took it up. Sibling rivalry will do that. I started my first band The Weekend Hiatus (awful name) in 2008 and we ended up putting out one EP in 2013. How did your band Venice on Fire start? I met the boys while I was working out at Roma. Both were in school and even took the same classes together but never spoke. We started jamming in my garage, slowly crafting our sound before we moved together to Toowoomba in 2016 to keep the “fire” burning. Roma ended up being the perfect breeding ground for us, because there was no scene. Who are the other members in the group? Jarrod is the bass player, back-up singer (read: yeller) and hype man of VOF. Darcy is the drummer, which he does incredibly well. We are all such different people, yet it works so well. What has been the highlight of your artistic career so far? 2017 was filled with unforgettable moments for us, even though it was a year of extreme transition and evolution. We released our debut album Tempt A Saint, and the tour of that release in Nov-Dec included a spot at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music. That was without a doubt one of the greatest weekends of my life, and I’ll carry the memories for life. What was the process for creating this work? We write songs from a variety of places. Although I would probably be considered the main songwriter, no tune is complete without input from Jarrod and Darcy. We like to build powerful songs with aggression, distortion and energy. Lyrically, the songs often cover dark or complex subject matters. We have discussed depression, broken families, societal inequality and childhood memories in a variety of our songs. But by no means does that make us depressing people. In fact, we pride ourselves in being warm and approachable. What are your future plans for Venice on Fire? The next three years will be a make-or-break for us. By 2020, I’ll be 30 so I want to make a real go of this before I start getting too old for it. We have started writing new material for possibly two EPs or even another album. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

BY AMANDA HERRON, OWNER OF ART OF STYLE

PARENTHOOD TO ‘BOSSHOOD’

GETTING CARNIVAL WARDROBE READY

Parents often concur that taking the parenthood leap brings second guessing, guilt trips, agonising over our actions and regretting that we didn’t get a child psychology degree. Being a “boss” is kind of similar. We worry if we said the right thing, whether what we’ve done will motivate or demotivate and sometimes, just sometimes, whether it is all worth it (and I still want that psychology degree)! Fundamentally, I believe if we approach all people, from our children to those we surround ourselves with at work, in the same way, we are on the right track. I don’t mean treat people like babies. What I mean is to encourage others, give them a hand up when needed and let them learn from falling too. Comfort and reassure at the right time but also recognise when to hold someone accountable so they learn from mistakes and develop resilience. Just like going to mothers group and discovering you’re not the only one twisting yourself into a mental pretzel, it can help to have business confidantes who lend an objective ear. Surround yourself with these to build your own resilience as a boss. If you don’t know where to start or who to turn to, give us a call on 4765 3456 or drop into the office at 277 Hume St. Facebook.com/FocusHRQLD will also give you pointers, tips or just a good laugh!

There are many ways to have a family day out and avoid a wardrobe malfunction without compromising on style and comfort. The Toowoomba Royal Show is a destination event for many, and although we’re planning what we’re going to eat, ride and buy, how many of us have considered what we’re going to wear? With April weather being somewhat unpredictable, outfits need to be practical, versatile, radiating style and confidence at the same time. To keep it simple, you will need: ■ One pair of sneakers or boots for comfort and warmth ■ One pair of well-fitted pants or jeans ■ One top/blouse/T-shirt you’re dying to wear ■ One layering piece, e.g cardigan, etc ■ One backup layering piece to leave in the car (just in case) ■ One stylishly floppy hat ■ One large handbag to carry around all the essentials, leaving just enough space for fairy floss on your way out!

MUM’S THE WORD BY FELICITY WRIGHT, FASHION COLUMNIST

This month’s Style magazine is all about parenting. So, keeping with this theme, my article is for all the mums out there.

I

don’t have children, but many of my clients do. One of the main reasons they seek out my services is because they are time poor but still want to look and feel good. I have asked two awesome mothers what their biggest style struggles are. Q. Since having my darling children my body shape has changed and I now carry extra weight around my middle and struggle finding jeans that fit — HELP! A. I would suggest opting for a high-waisted jean that has some degree

of stretch. This way the jeans work with your body shape more and will give where you need them to. The higher waist will help you feel firmer and held in. Another tip when shopping for jeans – no matter what your body shape, always get them as firm as you can. I know it feels too tight, but jeans give at least half a size. Q. I wear loose fitting tops because I am self-conscious about my stomach, but I know they make me look frumpy. What can you suggest?

A. Unfortunately, this is actually making you look bigger. The waist is the smallest part of your torso, so by defining it you are balancing out your body in the most flattering way. The cut and style of top you opt for is important because you can flatter your torso without having to feel exposed. Tops that are well cut, so they have darts in the front and back to help give the top shape and to create clean lines, is a great choice. A crop jacket that finishes at the waist will honestly be a godsend – trust me.

ALWAYS IN VOGUE L

TIMELESS FASHION TRENDS THAT NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE

ike the 12.20 train, fashion crazes come and go all too quickly – but there are always ageless staples that you can rely on time and time again. Think you’ve got nothing to wear? Here’s some classic advice that will have you looking sensational, whether you’re on the catwalk or simply heading to lunch with the girls. Brighten up: Neutrals, navies, greys and blacks all have their place in every woman’s cupboard, but why not jazz them up with some accessories that really pop. A striking red clutch, oversized earrings that catch the light or chunky, layered necklaces that draw the eye can really turn ho-hum into head-turning. Add a scarf: Not only does a simple scarf look amazing (and keep your neck warm) – it can also zhoosh up the blandest of ensembles. Sophisticated and elegant, it can easily be hidden away in your purse or handbag to instantly be at the ready when required. Outer this world: Why shouldn’t your outerwear be just as stylish as the rest of your wardrobe? If the weather is

cooler, chances are you’ll be hiding the outfit you’re wearing underneath anyway, so make an impact with a coat that’s chic (but still warm and practical) at the same time. Get loose: Big and baggy can work – trust us. But don’t take it too far. A giant, loose-fitting top should be teamed with something a little more tapered like thin jeans or even leggings (and it’s a great excuse to throw on your trendy sandshoes). Double up: If you love, love, love it – then why not get a second? If you find THE fashion item straight off the rack that fits perfectly and flatteringly matches your curves, then go ahead and buy doubles. You mightn’t be so lucky again. Think “bird in the hand”. LBD - all the way: They’ve been around since the dawn of time and they’ll still be there at the end of days. The little black dress deserves its place as the instant “go to” for absolutely everything from a formal occasion, to a job interview, to a night on the town. No matter the event, it will never let you down.

FOREST BATHING: Why the healing power of a walk in the woods will change your life

#

forestbathing is big news on social media right now. Likewise #hiking and #biophilia. But a quiet walk in the woods or by the sea delivers far more than a photo opportunity for your social media feed. Immersing yourself in natural environments can actually deliver serious health benefits. Forest bathing or shinrin yoku, as it is called in Japan, can lower your blood pressure, blood glucose and stress hormones and relieve depression and anxiety. Studies have also shown it can also increase brain cognition and boost our mood, empathy and creativity. Shinrin yoku has become standard preventative medicine in Japan since 1982. But the healing power of nature has been recognised for far longer than that. The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates called it vis medicatrix nature. More recently, spending quiet time in nature has been scientifically proven to activate our parasympathetic nervous system which calms us down, lowering our heart rate and stress levels. In turn, this helps alleviate the side effects of stress which can include headaches, inflammation, depression and impaired concentration. Research has found forest bathing can boost our immune system. One study found that 20 minutes of forest scenery significantly lowered salivary levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Another study found that four days of immersion in nature, and the corresponding disconnection from multi-media and technology, increased performance on a creativity, problem-solving task by a full 50 per cent. Forest bathing is meant to be meditative and requires the use of all five senses. The sight of the natural landscape, sounds of birds, wind and trees, touching natural textures, smelling the essential oils emitted by plants and tasting the air or even plants along the way (remember don’t taste any plants you can’t identify). The aim is peaceful, mindful immersion and a temporary, restorative escape from our mostly urban existence. All good reasons to take a hike. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

PARENTING – THE STRUGGLE IS REAL! BY LAUREN HOPE, GENERAL COLUMNIST

W

Beautifully crafted Jewellery & Watches for every occasion!

hen you become a parent your whole life changes. Your child becomes your priority and focus – it is a completely amazing and rewarding experience. But, let’s get real about it! It’s not all roses, rainbows and unicorns, it is probably the most challenging job in the world. The struggle is most definitely real. I am a mum to two beautiful, healthy (well most of the time) boys aged one and five years. I live my life at 100 miles an hour while I juggle two businesses, two children, a FIFO husband and household (that’s always in a state of bedlam), all while maintaining some sort of social life. I must admit that I seem to thrive on the intensity, yes, I am exhausted, cranky and hard to live with (apparently), but I find some of my best decisions are made under pressure. Most of the time I feel like I have the balancing act under control but throw in an episode of hand, foot and mouth disease (our most recent illness) and life soon turns to chaos! However, I am not alone and I always find some solace when I speak to my other mummy friends and hear their struggles with broken arms, teeth getting knocked out, croup, lack of sleep and the list goes on. It’s like we are in a club and sharing our stories makes us all feel a little more human! #squadgoals Seriously though, I was always the person who had zero aspirations to be a parent, until the birth of my first son, Slater, I had never held a baby and I was 28-years-old and an aunty to three children. To set the scene the first nappy change was an earth-shattering experience for me! However, now I wouldn’t have it any other way. I absolutely love them with all my heart, vegemite faces and all! I was going to end my article with an inspirational quote but that doesn’t really suit the “Hope Mantra”. So, instead I leave you with this – ‘“before becoming a parent, I didn’t know that I could ruin someone’s life by asking them to put on pants”.

Get the facts, not the flu

style l promotion

The flu is a highly contagious virus that is easily spread through droplets via coughing and sneezing. Severe cases can lead to life-threatening complications and hospitalisation. Unlike the common cold, an influenza infection can leave a patient bed-ridden with high fevers, body aching, loss of appetite and dehydration. With the winter months fast approaching, it is time to start thinking what you can do to get prepared for the cold and flu season.

How you can protect yourself and family this season • Book an appointment to get the influenza vaccine • Ensure good hand hygiene by washing your hands often with soap and water • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze • Support your immune system with supplements such as vitamin C, zinc, echinacea, and olive leaf extract. It is a common misperception that receiving the influenza vaccine will result in you getting the flu. This is not the case, however there is a potential to

• Localised pain, redness and swelling at the injection site • Low-grade fever • Muscle aches • Tiredness This year Priceline Pharmacy is offering the Quadrivalent Influenza vaccine. Clinics starting in late March/early April will ensure full protection is achieved by August. August is the month when the highest incidences of influenza occurs. This vaccine consists of four influenza strains - two A strains (H1N1 and H3N2) and two B strains (Victoria and Yamagata). The cost will be $19.95 and this price includes the vaccine and administration fee. No prescription is required. Please see one of the friendly staff to organise an appointment or

FIGURING OUT FOSTER CARING BY LISA MACHIN, OPINION COLUMNIST

A

column about parenting you say? Easy, peasy! I’ve always loved children, been able to make them laugh and enjoyed helping them grow and develop into little adults. In fact, by 2018 I had planned to have one! But life is full of twists and turns. The thought of anyone, especially a child, not having a place that feels safe and someone who believes and invests in them breaks my heart. So last year I put my name down to be a foster carer, and heart in throat sat on my front steps to read the info package. It’s not a thought you entertain lightly. I wouldn’t be able to sleep in, I’d have to get up and cut up banana and pack sandwiches. And sometimes I’d bear the brunt of some pretty bad behaviour, as little

people battled through abandonment, anger, mental health and just the normal strangeness of being away from their own home. Yet, it still all seemed worth it. On the day the foster care organisation came for my home visit, a mind-sapping heatwave had descended. We sipped water from my vintage glasses at the table, pedestal fans blaring uselessly at our side. “Do you have a gun licence? Do you live alone? Would the children have their own room? Do you have anger issues? What age group would you be best suited to care for?” The most recent statistics from Australian Institute of Health and Wellbeing (2017a) show that as of June

2016, there were 46,500 Australian children living in out-of-home care. Australia is desperately in need of foster carers. If I can give even a few weeks’ peace and support to someone whose life needs it, it’ll be worth it. THE DETAILS BEHIND KOMBUCHA BY ELSPETH HASWELL-SMITH, HEALTH AND WELLBEING COLUMNIST

ombucha tea, which is a fermented tea, is gaining popularity as the newest health drink on the market. However, what is kombucha and what do you need to know about its claimed beneficial properties? Kombucha contains a community of bacteria and yeast that thrive in two mutually non-exclusive compartments: the kombucha tea and the Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY), floating on it (Kozyrovska et al, 2012). The SCOBY is commonly termed as the ‘mother or mushroom’ and feeds off the sugar that is in the kombucha recipe. Kombucha is classified as a wild ferment, therefore the bacteria are uncontrolled

and unregulated (Kozyrovska et al, 2012). When it comes to wildly fermented drinks, our environment plays a role. While wild ferments, such as kombucha and kefir grains can be beneficial they may not be tolerated by some individuals. If you are battling Candida, Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth and Irritable Bowel Syndrome you will need to avoid wild ferments such as kombucha, while healing. Various studies have explored the various beneficial strains of lactic acid bacteria found in kombucha and found high levels of yeast. Mayser et al., (1995) found kombucha samples harbouring

Candida albicans, the yeast that is responsible for Candida overgrowth (thrush, fungal infections on the skin and nails, sinus infections, brain fog, fatigue, weight gain and so forth). Another study, explored bacteria growth over 21 days and found that their was a variation over time and was dominated by Candida sp. (73.5–83 per cent) (Teoh et al, 2004). Therefore, if you are on a journey of healing and overcoming health issues it is best to focus on bacteria strains that are controlled and have a high Colony Forming Unit (CFU) for example Lactobacteria and Bifidobacteria cultures. Understanding how strains of bacteria influence your health can support immune function and mental health. Suffering from chronic health issues and ongoing gut dysbiosis is best supported with a microbiome test. However, as a healthy vibrant individual that doesn’t experience anxiety, depression, gut dysbiosis or low immune function consuming kombucha can be an important part of a healthy diet. Be aware that a lot of commercially produced kombucha is high in sugar and contains ingredients such as glucose syrup, colours, flavours and preservatives.

TOP TIPS ON HOW TO RECHARGE AND REFOCUS YOUR GREY MATTER

BRAIN DRAIN O

ur lives are charging along at a mile a minute and juggling family life, a career and good health is an exhausting process. So, if you’re think it’s becoming all too much, here is some helpful advice to clear the mind clutter and get you back on track. Complete just one thing: When your mind is racing, it’s often impossible to prioritise – adding to that overwhelming sense of chaos. To combat this, make a "to-do list" and banish one item (no matter how small).

Need to call the bank, mow the lawn or go grocery shopping? Then pick a task and do it. Once completed, put a line through it and move on. Your list is getting shorter and your mind is better focussed because it’s not trying to juggle 20 items at once. Small victories lead to bigger tasks being completed. Don’t be frightened to ask for help: Often when we become overwhelmed, it’s because we struggle tackling too many tasks all alone.

Maybe we don’t want to ask for help because it indicates weakness or creates a sense that we’re not good at our job – whatever the reason, put that hand up if you’re drowning. At work, at home, within your circle of friends – there is always someone who will be prepared to ease your burden if they see you stressed and struggling. Think of it as a temporary “reboot” to get you back on track. Who knows – you might be able to repay the favour when you get your own house in order. Always plan ahead: I know it’s hard – especially when your brain is cooked from trying to complete all the day’s errands, but making that list is a great way to increase your sense of control and add some direction for the coming week. Ignore what’s happened in the past and you can hit the road running with renewed energy and focus because you know how you’re going to face the challenges ahead.

TOURISM STARTS AT HOME BY NIVARD NELSON, NUTRITION COLUMNIST

T

ourism, the art of travel – allowing people to undertake activities in places outside of their normal location whether it be for leisure, business or other purposes. This idea of tourism in the context of food can be then further defined into hospitality tourism, culinary tourism, agri-tourism, food tourism and foodie travel. These categories of tourism are closely tied to the culture of the location. Experiences are not limited to simply eating out but are linked to the food markets, cooking classes, farm tours, vineyard visits and experiencing all that a region has to offer via its culinary exploits. This is considered one of the best ways to get to know the story of the place we are visiting.

Operators, suppliers and those people who are providing this experience play an important role by ensuring people can connect products with the traditions of the destination they are visiting. By this I mean that we need to find our own voice. We need to strive for our own identity. Yes we can take inspiration from both national and international influences but we, the Darling Downs region must fight for our traditions – our USP, or unique selling position. We need to promote what makes this region unique. We are blessed with awarding-winning wineries, fertile farmland that produces beef, lamb, pork and produce that rivals anything the rest

of the country has to offer. We are blessed that we have access via a world class airport, allowing tourists to spend more time experiencing than travelling. But tourism starts at home. I challenge everyone to look at our region and let’s start experiencing those traditions that are unique to us. Let us promote the Darling Downs because we all benefit from strong tourism.

THE ESSENTIAL

SKINCARE ROUTINE Keep your beauty routine fresh and simple

A

daily skin care routine is essential for optimising skin health. There are three steps that should be included in your facial skin care routine every morning and evening: cleanser, toner and moisturiser.

1

CLEANSERS

2

3

This product is used to remove dirt, sweat and bacteria that build up on the surface of the skin. To use, begin by dampening your face with warm water. Then apply a small amount of facial cleanser to your skin. Gently massage the cleanser into your face starting at your cheeks and extending to the rest of the face using circular motions. Be sure to clean the neck, under the chin and around the ears while avoiding the mouth and eyes area. Rinse off with warm water and dry by dabbing at your face using a soft towel. Do not rub the skin harshly.

TONERS

4

Used after cleansers, toners help stimulate circulation and help to remove dead skin cells. Toners restore the natural acidity of the skin and give it a smooth, even appearance. Simply soak a cotton pad in the toner and sweep it gently over the surface of the face being careful to avoid the eyes.

MOISTURISERS

5

6

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

To prevent flaking and dullness, use a moisturiser catering to your skin tone to improve hydration and create a protective layer on the surface of your skin. To use, squeeze a small amount of facial moisturiser onto you clean fingertips and gently massage the moisturiser into the skin. Thick creams are used for dry skin while gentle formulas are used for sensitive skin. Ask advice from skin specialists who know their products when purchasing your facial moisturiser.

FERTILITY PRESERVATION

A

negative pregnancy test followed by an exploratory colonoscopy ended with Katanya Watherston’s world being turned upside down after she was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Recently married and actively trying to start a family, the 36-year-old knew oncology treatment such as chemotherapy could leave her with lifelong hormonal and reproductive complications that could affect her fertility. Still shocked from her diagnosis and almost afraid of what the future might now hold, she asked her surgeon, Dr Mike Egerton, what hope she had of ever being able to have children. Dr Egerton called his colleague, local gynaecologist Dr John Esler for advice. Dr Esler, a leading fertility specialist with more than 20 years’ experience, was able to offer hope through fertility preservation treatment. Oocyte vitrification (freezing eggs) and embryo freezing are techniques Dr Esler uses every day to help infertile couples conceive. He could offer these

same techniques to help protect and preserve Katanya’s fertility. The aim of the medical fertility preservation is to give the patient the best chance of falling pregnant in the future. While Dr Esler’s first preference was to harvest and freeze Katanya’s eggs, the location of her surgery combined with her need to start chemotherapy meant harvesting and freezing eggs was not possible. Her best chance was a technique called ovarian cortex transplantation (OCT), which involved surgically removing one of her ovaries and freezing it for future use. Dr Esler said the technique had previously been considered experimental but recent published research found OCT was a very effective method of preserving fertility, allowing for natural pregnancy and restored ovarian function. Where oocyte vitrification (or egg freezing) was not possible, as in Katanya’s case, OCT was the fertility preservation technique of choice and should no longer be considered experimental.

“Katanya had good ovarian reserves but we did not have time to complete ovarian stimulation to enable us to collect and freeze her eggs, which meant her best hope to be able to achieve motherhood sometime in the future, was OCT,” Dr Esler says. “We are also taking steps to try to protect Katanya’s remaining ovary from the effects of chemotherapy, but there is no guarantee this will be successful.” Katanya said she was grateful her symptoms had led to an early cancer diagnosis and that she received advice to explore fertility preservation. “Now I have hope that once my oncology treatment is completed and I receive the ‘all-clear’ I will be able to start a family,” she says. “When I am ready, they will surgically graft a slice of my ovarian tissue back into my pelvis and several months later, the grafted ovarian tissue should begin producing reproductive hormones and follicular development. At this stage, I should be able to fall pregnant either with ovarian stimulation and IVF, or perhaps even naturally. “I wake up every day filled with gratitude for the care and support I have received.” Dr Esler says fertility preservation treatment was also available for young men, who for a variety of reasons find their fertility is affected. “Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can affect sperm production – sometimes this is temporary, but in other cases it can be permanent. Once treatment begins, it may be too late to collect and preserve sperm as it may already carry genetic damage, so it wise to take and freeze a semen sample as a precaution to ensure they can still have children in the future,” Dr Esler says. “Cancer is not the only reason for offering fertility preservation – there are numerous other medical conditions that may require medications which may be toxic to ovaries or sperm.”

who’s new in town | style WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

We recently moved to Toowoomba from Brisbane. I was actually born in Tasmania, and I spent several years in Papua New Guinea as a youngster. At the age of six my family moved back to Australia and we ended up settling in Brisbane.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.

My wife Wendy and I have three children, seven-year-old identical twins Chloe and Eloise, and a little boy Benjamin, who will soon be five. We will also have a puppy soon if I’m to listen to my children!

WHAT IS YOUR WORKING BACKGROUND?

I initially started out in the sports science field training elite athletes. I had always intended on going into medicine and so I went back to complete a medical degree with the intention of going into orthopaedics. However, on a rotation at Brisbane’s Mater Hospital as a medical student, I helped deliver a baby and after that I was hooked. Since then I’ve worked in obstetrics and gynaecology.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS INDUSTRY?

WHAT DO YOU THINK EARNS SUCCESS IN BUSINESS?

Staying up-to-date with medical and surgical advancements is paramount, however I believe good communication skills are one of the biggest factors dictating a doctor’s success, along with respect and empathy for their patients.

WHAT DO YOU PRIDE YOURSELF ON?

Having a family of our own, my wife and I understand all about the ups and downs of the ‘baby journey’ as well as the changes women experience after the baby-making phase of life is over. At our practice, Evolve Women’s Health, we can relate and empathise with our patients, having experienced many of those moments ourselves. We know it can be wonderful, but we also know it can be difficult and, at times, heartbreaking. I believe one of my strengths is being able to understand and empathise with my patients, but also communicate with them.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE TOOWOOMBA REGION?

We wanted a relaxed lifestyle and a better work/life balance for our family. We wanted our kids to grow up with a decent backyard, and the opportunity to attend a good school without

Dr. David Chettle, obstetrician and gynaecologist having to travel. We were tired of the traffic and the lack of community that living in a big city brings.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT TOOWOOMBA?

It’s a beautiful city and it has so much to offer. There are so many excellent schools in the region, you’re really spoiled for choice. We love all the parks, trees and gardens, and the locals have all been so nice, welcoming and honest – we are really loving the change.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE FOR THE TOOWOOMBA REGION IN THE FUTURE?

It’s hard for me to say as I’ve really only been here for two months and we are still discovering all that Toowoomba has to offer. If I listen to what my kids have been saying, perhaps another public swimming pool and a roller skating rink – we heard that there was one but it closed. Our girls would have loved that.

IVF JOY – A YEAR ON Wayne and Tracy Peters shared every part of their IVF journey with Style in May 2017. Fast forward a year later...

n May last year, Style magazine featured local couple Wayne and Tracy Peters, who shared their very personal story about conceiving a child through in-vitro fertilisation, or IVF. On April 20, 2017 at 6.48am in St Vincent’s Hospital, Toowoomba, Wayne and Tracy welcomed their son, Jackson Lee Peters, into the world. Almost a year later, we chat with Tracy about how her experience of being a mother for the first time has been. “Jackson has changed our lives immensely,” Tracy says. “He makes us laugh every day. Of course, like any new parent, there have been ups and downs (and long nights) since his arrival, but the joy we experience far outweighs any hard times. We feel like we have been on an incredible journey with him and love watching him learn and develop. Obviously, we have learnt

leaving the house with an infant is now a process, as is going on holidays!” Wayne is the proprietor of Joyce Mayne Toowoomba, and Tracy works as the small appliance manager. The couple conceived Jackson through IVF, which is a process used to overcome a range of fertility issues, and they would recommend it to others. “Yes, we have no regrets whatsoever about going through IVF, and would do it again,” Tracy says. “Dr [John] Esler (gynaecologist and fertility specialist) and his team were very supportive during the process.” Tracy says there’s a huge amount of support available throughout the various stages of IVF. The happy mother offers one bit of advice to new parents. “Go with the flow! Babies are tiny for a such a short time, cuddle them as much as possible.”

Following their success with 21 fashion houses from across the city participating in 2017, Stepping Out Winter Glamour Runway is adding something new this

What’s it really cost to build a true energy efficient home?

F

or this article, we are going to dig a little deeper into the issue. We feel this has an importance far bigger than what it is often given — as not only will your domestic costs of heating and cooling your home continue to rise, so will the environmental costs of creating and supplying that energy in the first place. True energy efficiency is not about not running the reverse cycle air con too much, it’s about not needing to run the air con because your home remains cool on a hot day, and warm on a cold day. The really good news is that building a highly energy efficient home is not expensive or difficult, perhaps adding only a few thousand dollars to the overall cost of your new home. This is a once-only cost, but the savings generated will pay you back every year for the entire life of the home. In a nod towards energy efficiency, the government requires every new home to achieve at least a 4.5-star energy rating, plus nominal credits. For an average four-bedroom family home, this will translate to using about 180/190 megajules of energy per square metre, per year. Our own goal for any new home we build on the Darling Downs is to achieve at least a 7-star energy rating. For the same family home, this would translate to around a 50 MJ/m2 rating. If a 4.5-star family home costs around $2000 a year for heating and cooling, a 7-star home will reduce that to around $600. If that saving was kicking straight into your mortgage, imagine where your financial position would be in just 10 years time.

you can’t change — the weather and your outside environment. We often have customers come to us with their plans, either already drawn up, or just as a scratched out idea. One customer showed us his house plan on his block, and we rotated it just one metre around, dramatically improving his home’s energy efficiency, and therefore his ongoing energy savings — without adding one extra cent to the build cost. Just by looking at house plans, along with the elevations and the site plans, we can very quickly see where any potential problems are. At this point, just swapping the layout of rooms around may improve the home’s energy efficiency, without changing any exterior walls or roof line, and therefore not adding any building costs. Extra costs may be incurred in installing the proper insulation, quality glass, adding awnings, sealing doorways and the like.

Let’s sum up and answer our own question

What’s it really cost? An extraordinary amount that keeps biting every year, if you don’t. We only ever see a truly energy efficient home as the genuine low-cost option. FINALISTS When you are comparing DISPLAY HOME builders’ quotes and plans, take ENERGY EFFICIENCY a few moments to consider the deeper issues like the ongoing energy costs, and what is really included, and Look for this column excluded. When house plans are drawn in next month’s Style... up to a budget, and not to an energy we’ll be digging deeper efficiency strategy first, you may end up into what true energy paying a very high price for a low-price efficiency for your home home.

HOUSE

ENERGY RATING SCHEME

How hard, or expensive is it to upgrade a 4.5-star rated home plan into a cost-saving 7-star home? First, don’t be confused by the star rating on its own. Just by adding a ceiling fan to your outdoor patio you will raise a 4.5-star rating to 6 — but the reality is there is no energy saving, just more cost. Rather than focussing on the star rating, we focus on what each home plan needs to maximise and minimise what

PERSONAL TOUCHES FROM FRIENDS AND FAMILY MADE THIS STUNNING WEDDING SPECIAL

PHOTOS: LIFE & LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY

MAGIC DAY IN THE MOUNTAINS M

elissa Taylor and Nirvard Nelson tied the knot in a beautiful and elegant ceremony at Spicers Clovelly in Montville in July, after what Melissa describes as a rather unforgettable proposal. “Nivard had planned to propose at Burleigh headland with oysters and champagne, but I had made dinner plans with friends. So, instead he proposed with a bottle of champagne overlooking the beach,” Melissa says. “The next day was Valentine’s Day and Nivard had organised a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. It was very romantic until the balloon crashed and I crashed and broke my knee. “It certainly was a memorable engagement.” The couple say their perfect day was made even more extraordinary with personal contributions and touches from their close friends and family.

“Melissa’s gown was created and made by the extremely talented couturier, Clare Greenhill, of Rowen Couture, who was at the wedding to see her special creation walk down the aisle. Melissa looked absolutely stunning,” Nivard says. “Melissa wore her mother’s veil. And this was made even more special because the veil featured crocheted rosettes by her aunt who had passed away in December 2015. Auntie Margie played a huge part in Melissa’s life. As a tribute to her, Melissa had her girlfriends each hand-stitch a rosette onto her veil at her bridal shower.” “My niece Gracie was in our wedding party and she wore my mother’s wedding dress part of which my grandmother crocheted. It really is a very treasured memory,” Melissa adds. The couple’s wedding cake was made by two of their very close friends, Sarah

YOUR BODY DESERVES MORE

Cerqui of Oh For Heavens Cake and Jane Barham. The flowers were designed by long-term family friend Rebecca Krog-Osborne, of Dawn Osborne Florist. Sketchbook Designs created the couple’s personalised M&N insignia used on the ring box. The couple and their guests celebrated the reception under fairy lights with a six-course degustation meal accompanied by Melissa’s favourite champagne, Perrier-Jouët. Melissa says if she could give any advice to brides-to-be, it would be to enjoy the lead up to their special day with family and friends. “It goes so quickly and can be very stressful… but take the time to enjoy it and don’t let the little things stress you out.” Nivard agrees. “Enjoy the day. What will be will be.”

CHILL OUT

BY DARREN BURTON

T

he giant beast stood less than two metres away, staring us down with its angry beady eyes. The frost of the early morn still sat across the bison’s tangled woolly hide and it wasn’t concealing its annoyance that we had dared enter its territory. Welcome to Yellowstone. Looking to experience something truly unique, my wife and I recently joined a snow mobile tour to explore the lush forests, canyons and untouched wilderness of Yellowstone National Park. This incredible reserve stretches through three American states delivering more than 9000sq m of natural wonder, river courses, spectacular geysers and hot springs. For us, there was the added backdrop of an unspoilt winter wonderland with

thick powdery snow blanketing every panoramic turn. It was breathtaking. The trip also provided the opportunity to observe wolves, coyotes, bald eagles, moose, elk and herd after herd of big ole bison. We knew we were going to get up close and personal, we just didn’t know it would be THIS close. Our previously mentioned buffalo buddy was travelling solo – and even though we were “sharing” a roadway, he had obviously taken exception to our presence. As per the instructions of our wonderful tour guide Tom, we nervously waited at the side of the road, sitting in single formation on our snow mobiles as the bison slowly turned its head left and right, surveying the intruders.

And then he decided to make his point. Seven hundred angry kilos literally started bouncing on the spot looking to take out the closest enemy snow mobile and we didn’t need a second invitation to hit that accelerator and “get the hell out of Dodge”. Yes, it got the heart racing, but it was a priceless memory that reinforced just how lucky we were to be a part of this one-of-a-kind winter adventure. As Australia sweltered through a baking summer heatwave, we endured three days of the mercury hitting -18°C... it was numbing. But the freezing temperatures guaranteed we virtually had the park to ourselves – making it the perfect holiday that we’ll remember forever.

Make this the last time you lose weight.

GREAT WINTER READ

ON THE BIG SCREEN

THE NAME OF THE WIND BY PATRICK ROTHFUSS TENTH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL EDITION

A WRINKLE IN TIME

Stars: Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reece Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Mindy Kaling, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis Rating: PG Running time: 109 minutes Release date: Thursday, March 29

BRISBANE actor Levi Miller stars opposite Oprah Winfrey, Reece Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Chris Pine in the big-screen adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s award-winnng teen sci-fi novel. The visually extravagant film – featuring eye-catching costumes by Oscar-nominee Paco Delgado – follows teen Meg Murry, who goes in search of her missing father with the help of three celestial beings. Meg is a typical middle school student struggling with issues of self-worth and just wanting to fit in. But what makes her not so typical is the fact that she’s the daughter of two world-renowned physicists, and she is uniquely gifted. Together with Meg’s brother Charles Wallace, they meet Mrs Which, Mrs Whatsit and Mrs Who (Winfrey, Witherspoon and Kaling) who have journeyed to Earth to help search for Meg’s father (Pine). Travelling via a wrinkling of time and space, they are transported to worlds beyond their imagination where they must confront an evil force. To make it back home, Meg must harness the strength necessary to defeat the darkness rapidly enveloping the universe.

A beautiful hard-cover with a new author’s note is the ideal celebration for this previously little-known story. According to Rothfuss’ author note, the book took many years and reworks to get to publication – and the result for the reader is worth the wait. The tale is introduced somewhat uniquely, as rather than jumping straight into the story, the reader is introduced to a tavern-owner with a secretive past. Several chapters in, this man – known to locals as Kote – meets a scribe who convinces Kote to share his story. It is revealed that Kote is actually somewhat of a legend in his own right, and it is here that The Name of the Wind changes from third-person prose to a first-person account from Kote – better known as Kvothe Kingkiller. Full of magic, action, mystery, and excellent writing, this book is a must-read.

FRESH SOUND WE GOT LOVE BY JESSICA MAUBOY

Australian singer-songwriter Jessica Mauboy is performing at Eurovision with new song We Got Love. Mauboy said she wanted to write a healing song. She penned the soaring made-for-Eurovision pop anthem with the DNA hitmakers David Musumeci and Anthony Egizii. “All of these things we see online, whether in our indigenous communities, past and present and how the world is turning, made me angry,” she said. “But what affected me more was the love coming from people, seeing people standing tall and strong.” Mauboy and the SBS team behind the Eurovision campaign not only wanted an uplifting song but one which would connect with the all-important voters in Europe. “We needed something that someone who doesn’t speak English would be able to understand so as simple as it sounds, it could still mean so much more to them,” she said.

SAVING IS A FAMILY AFFAIR BY LEANNE MCDONALD, DIRECTOR AND SENIOR FINANCIAL PLANNER OF CREATE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS

Y

ou eat together, play together and live under the same roof – so why not save together? While many parents bear the brunt of their brood’s finances, it’s a good idea to consider making household saving a family affair by involving kids in the process. It is never too early to teach your children about money, shape positive habits, and instil valuable life lessons. By getting the whole family on board, not only will you help your kids develop into money-savvy adults, you’ll also play a helping hand in creating a prosperous future for you and your spouse. Plan for the future: A goal without a plan is just a wish, so it’s important to

take the time to sit down as a family and discuss your financial priorities for the year ahead. Whether you plan to buy a new family car, have an overseas holiday or upgrade to a bigger home, establishing clear goals will help you to prioritise what’s important. Get your kids involved by asking them what they hope to achieve this year. Be a positive role model: Kids form many of their habits and attitudes early on by watching their parents, so it is important that you demonstrate good financial practices whenever possible.

OWN YOUR TOMORROW

You can teach your kids to be savvy spenders by showing them how to shop around for the best price. Spread the load: Kids should be made aware of how their actions impact on household finances early in life. While younger children shouldn’t be expected to make financial contributions, they should be able to contribute around the house. Simple measures such as turning off the lights, having shorter showers and unplugging computers from the wall at night can all make a big difference to household running costs.

No matter what your current situation, Create Financial Solutions can work with you and your family to plan a great future and prepare for any uncertainties life may throw at you. We have partnered with AMP, Australia’s largest financial planning network, to give you access to some of the most reliable and competitive financial products and solutions while maintaining the friendly personal attention you only get from a locally-owned and operated business. We will take the time to talk with you and listen to your goals and objectives, then we can develop a personalised plan to help you to:

COLLABORATIVE PARENTING STRATEGIES TO AVOID THE CONFLICT

BY KARA BEST, BEST WILSON BUCKLEY LEGAL PRACTICE DIRECTOR AND ACCREDITED FAMILY LAW SPECIALIST

hen two people separate there has most likely been a degree of conflict, and difficulty communicating. When there are children involved, it is important that both parents have an awareness that the conflict between them is unlikely to have positive consequences for the children.

COMPROMISE – THE OLD ‘GIVE AND TAKE’ PRINCIPLE

It is the old adage of “a bit of give leads to a bit of take” but making the other parent’s life difficult is only going to make matters worse. Let’s not beat around the bush, and contemplate that facilitating parenting arrangements is easy. It is not. Often parenting orders are laced with complex paragraphs about time spent between each parent and often, without some level of give and take, any parenting arrangement in

place will not operate smoothly. Parents need to be aware that while parenting arrangements may be inconvenient for them, it is most likely the children who are truly inconvenienced by any situation where there is no give and both parents are taking.

MAKE ARRANGEMENTS AND NOTE THEM ON THE CALENDAR!

Arrangements for the care of children and the time the children would spend with each parent (whether informal or formal) need to be made with a commitment to do all you can to abide by them. A good method is to mark specific details in advance on a calendar and then seek comment or agreement from the other parent and exchanging a copy of the calendar with that parent when agreement is reached. A calendar

ensures that each parent is on the same page and gives parties the ability to sort out any misinterpretations, misunderstandings or inconsistencies before a situation arises where both parents think they are abiding by the arrangements only to find out that they are abiding by different arrangements. There is no consensus on the best way to make parenting arrangements run smoothly. What there is for the most part though is consensus that conflict between parents is unlikely to have positive consequences for the children. Approaching such matters with a mindset of compromise and acceptance rather than the “my way or the highway” approach and implementing arrangements which will lead to the lowest chance of conflict occurring between the parents is essential.

security | style

SAFE AND SOUND I

t’s a difficult reality to face but, sooner or later, your home most likely will be targeted for a break-in. But while ever-increasing burglary statistics can paint a disheartening picture, it doesn’t mean you should just sit back and let it happen. Here are a few simple suggestions to help protect your home, your

possessions and, most of all, your family. Lock up: It sounds so simple, turn that latch. So many unlawful house entries are often “crimes of opportunity” where a window or door was left open – inviting resourceful criminals to walk inside and help themselves. And if you have done the right thing and have your house

locked and secured, don’t hide the key under the mat or the pot plant next to the door… it’s the first place a would-be criminal would look. Get to know your neighbours: When it comes to security, the more eyes watching over your property the better. While having a good relationship with your neighbours is the wish of any home owner, exchanging phone numbers (in case of emergency), collecting each other’s mail when on holidays and keeping a check on suspicious people or vehicles in the area will give everyone peace of mind (and strengthen neighbourly ties). Be alarmed: A number of electronic companies can supply and install the very latest in home security (including back-to-base 24-hour monitoring), but there are a host of inexpensive hi-tech systems available on the market today available from major retailers and hardware stores. They can incorporate everything from easy-to-install door and window break-in sensors, to infra-red motion detection with recording features or alerts to your mobile phone. Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

WE CHOSE OAK TREE Moving into the Oak Tree Retirement Village at Toowoomba was a lifestyle choice for Stephen and Robyn Beasley who wanted to age with independence and dignity without placing a burden on their children.

Stephen, 70, and Robyn, 65, had lived in the same house at Gatton for 39 years and realised they needed to be prepared for the future. “Both of our fathers died before our mothers leaving them all at sea,” Robyn said. “We didn’t want to do that to each other, especially when our three children were living overseas.” When Stephen retired from the Gatton Campus of the University of Queensland the couple were keen to downsize while they were still young enough to make new friends and embrace a different way of life. They had been looking at retirement villages for quite a while and were impressed by the ethos of the Oak Tree group.

“We liked the mature way they kept in touch without hounding us,” Robyn said. “When our son moved back to Australia and settled in Toowoomba it seemed the right choice for us as well. “We waited 20 months for our unit to be built at the Toowoomba village and felt comfortable that it was going to be a smaller village, mainly for like-minded country folk. “For us retirement village living is all about safety, security and companionship. You are not buying real estate in the hope that it will make lots of money up the track. “Going into a retirement community provides peace of mind and, at the end of the day, you cannot put a price on that.” Throughout their married life Stephen and Robyn had been a single income family concentrating on educating three bright children. Their finances couldn’t stretch to moving into a smaller house for a few years before eventually going into a village. “We could only afford to make one move and it had to be the right one,” Robyn said.
