ULTIMATE REAL ESTATE :: DALBY
DALBY OFFERS FAMILY BALANCE Giving locals the best of both worlds day in and day out
SITUATED just an hour from Toowoomba, Dalby is the bustling business hub of the Surat Basin. The town was founded in the early 1840s at a place known as The Crossing on Myall Ck. A small settlement was founded to assist travellers heading to Jimbour Station, which was eventually proclaimed a township in 1853. In 1859, Dalby was made part of Queensland, and was declared a municipality in August 1863. Located in the Darling Downs region on fertile volcanic soil, the region has an extensive and diverse agricultural industry including cotton, sorghum, wheat and barley. The town has a humid subtropical climate, which makes the region hotter and less humid in summer months and colder and drier during the winter. Built on a flood plain, the town has experienced many severe floods throughout its history. Other industries in the area include coal mining, manufacturing, and livestock farming. During the past decade, the landscape of the town and surrounding region has changed with the introduction of coal seam gas mining. The industry has brought with it a population boom and increased jobs in the region. Dalby has been described as a town where the city meets the country. While the town maintains a close distance to major cities including Toowoomba and Brisbane, it offers a relaxed country atmosphere to call home. With quality facilities, friendly faces and plenty of opportunities, Dalby is the ideal place for anyone looking for rural living close to the big cities.

IN RECENT years, Dalby has served as a major administrative centre for the oil and gas exploration industry in south west Queensland, but there is so much more powering its economy. It also services a major power station at nearby Kogan Creek, and with the announcement of a new solar farm on Blaxland-South Rd, it is set
to become an energy shire for Queensland. Though coal mining has dropped off significantly, and it still produces ethanol from sorghum at its United Petroleum Bio Refinery – the first of its kind in Australia. ULTIMATE REAL ESTATE :: CHINCHILLA
HEARTBEAT OF THE WESTERN DOWNS
Chinchilla, tucked neatly between Miles and Dalby, is the suburban hub of the Western Downs THOUGH modernity has brought enormous developments in the last decade, an old heart still beats in this town. The word Chinchilla was derived from the Aboriginal word for cypress pine, Jinchilla, after explorer Ludwig Leichhardt stopped here in October 1844. A monument in his honour can today seen in the Pioneer Cemetery on the busy Warrego Hwy, but it bears remembering that until1877 there was no township at all. The first major development was the railway. Built in 1878, the rail carted livestock, timber and grain out, and bringing in passengers seeking their fortune. It was a critical period of growth for the town. The peak number of passengers using the train was in 1949, when 9569 tickets were issued. To accommodate families making homes in the area, Chinchilla State School was built in 1883 to educate 31 pupils. By 1913, the number of students attending the school had increased to 102. The Chinchilla Shire Council was inaugurated in 1912 with the first chairman being Mr L.L. Atkins. Dairying was once a large industry in the area with the first butter factory built in 1910. In 1939, more than three million pounds of butter was produced locally.
Primary production has always played a huge role in the Chinchilla shire; however, it had the potential to be destroyed by a plant known as prickly pear. If it wasn’t for the introduction of the Cactoblastis cactorum, the Chinchilla shire may not be the thriving community it is today. Prickly pear was first discovered in the region back in 1862 and it is believed to have been brought to Queensland as a garden plant. By 1900 farmers were beginning to leave their land as they simply could not control the plant’s spread. By 1920, approximately 58 million acres was covered in prickly pear and it was spreading at around one million acres a year. Australia’s most fertile land was being overtaken by the plant and something had to be done to control its spread. In 1925, Cactoblastis eggs were imported from South America and were divided between the Sherwood laboratory and the Chinchilla Field Station, a property leased by the Commonwealth Prickly Pear Board from local landholder, Mr Thomas A Cole. The larvae at Chinchilla destroyed the first prickly pear plant in September 1926, making local land viable and productive once again. The Chinchilla research station closed its doors at the end of 1936.

CHINCHILLA WEIR A FAMILY FAVOURITE
PLENTY OF OPTIONS FOR A NIGHT OUT A NIGHT on the town in Chinchilla is always great fun, and with the recent development of new restaurants and the influx of new characters the scene has evolved greatly. The Commercial Hotel, Chinchilla RSL, Club Hotel and Bowls Club offer a unique ambience, to appeal to a variety of local residents. While in the past a pub meal was the standard fare for celebrants, today the culinary landscape has
changed beyond recognition. Today residents have their pick of Thai, Indian or Chinese restaurants, with KFC, Subway, and McDonald’s fast food restaurants also doing good business. In the face of this competition, the Club and Commercial Hotels and the RSL have set about perfecting their menus with new chefs and premium quality restaurant meals and there’s no denying that they speak for themselves.
FAMILY FAVOURITE: THE CHINCHILLA WEIR IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO ENJOY QUALITY TIME WITH LOVED ONES PHOTO:T&GWSBT. CAMPING by the water is one of the great pleasures to be had in the Western Downs. Chinchilla is nestled amid a picturesque segment of the Charlie’s Creek catchment, which runs into the Condamine River, where picnic
facilities and walkways provide a relaxing waterside setting. Chinchilla Weir, about 10km south of the town on Tara Rd, provides the town’s water supply and is a fantastic site for recreational waterskiing. Skiing and boating
enthusiasts are lucky to have a freshwater location with an island to circle, unlike many other rural skiing areas that simply have a wide stretch of river. On warm weekends and holiday periods the weir becomes a
playground for water sports, with a loading ramp, grassy banks and barbecue facilities. Camping at the weir is free, with a two-night-stay limit, making it the perfect place to relax on the weekend.

ChinChilla – an affordable friendly town
Chinchilla is approximately 300 kilometres north west of Brisbane situated on the Warrego Highway in the heart of the Surat Basin. Just a comfortable 2 hours to Toowoomba and located within about 4 hour drive of many major destinations. Traditionally a rural based township reliant on pastoral and various broad acre grain cropping, cotton, melon growing and timber the town in the past decade has seen significant changes with the development of power stations, coal mines and the coal seam gas industry. Currently the Western Downs Regional Council is seeing a significant amount of development applications to build Solar Power projects due to the major investment by Powerlink within the region. Cattle Feedlots are expanding their operations and herd numbers. With the new Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport just on our doorstep the future for the region is very promising. The town underwent substantial population growth from 2009 to 2013 off the construction phase of the CSG industry and numerous other projects. New subdivisions were developed and homes built. With the cross over to the CSG Production phase, the housing market has come off its highs and now represents very affordable living for younger families and retirees looking to find a quieter more relaxed lifestyle or base from which to travel. Current population is approximately 5,500 in the town. A modern 4 Bedroom brick home with ensuite and double lock up car garage on various sized residential blocks are extremely great value and selling from $240k to $350k. Unit living is also a very affordable option for those considering down sizing or buying their first home. Land values have dropped and buying in the current market represents exceptional value for money. Rents have also dropped and so have the number of properties available for rent. These are strong but early signs of an improving property market. Strong education with 4 schools, State Primary & High School and 2 Christian Schools Woolworths, Supa IGA,Target Country and other National retailers An array of fast food and coffee shop franchises and outlets A tree lined and inviting main street, all 4 major banks Quality Medical, Health Services and local hospital Strong sporting community and various service clubs

ULTIMATE REAL ESTATE :: MILES
MILES: HEART OF THE BASIN Miles is a thriving rural town located at the junction of the Warrego and Leichhardt hwys
THE area was explored by Ludwig Leichhardt who, in October, 1844, named a tributary of the Condamine River, Dogwood Creek. When the railway creek crossing was constructed and opened in 1878 by the Minister for Railways, William Miles, the settlement at the area was named after him. The town had always been a thriving agricultural hub of sheep and cattle, but these days the market is dominated by several prominent stud cattle lines, and a strong cropping industry. In recent years the town, which is 46km west of Chinchilla, has experienced an explosion of activity as a result of the coal seam gas industry with hundreds of new houses built along with several new motels and large worker accommodation camps. The 2011 census listed Miles’ population at about 1800 people, however, the fluctuating nature of the CSG workforce means the area could have a population anywhere between that number and thousands more. A calendar favourite in the Miles district is the Beef, Bells and Bottle Tree Festival, a Biennial September showcase of community activities and events that capture the town’s living history, celebrate its relaxed country lifestyle, and provide ample opportunities for community and visitor involvement.

JEWELS IN THECROWN SCHOOLING OF THE MILES REGION ENRICHES MILES
DRAWS THE CROWDS: Miles Historical Village and Museum is a must-see for visitors to the town. MILES Historical Village and Museum is one of Australia’s leading regional museums. It was officially opened in 1971, and over the years has developed into one of the premier tourism attractions within the region. The Village was the vision of some very inspiring community members who wanted to create a place where history could be preserved in a streetscape style for one and all to enjoy. There are currently more
than 30 buildings with amazing collections and links to a bygone era. Some of these include the shell house, coach house, blacksmiths, general store, post office, bakery, Union Hotel, barbers, chemist, the beautiful Rose Cafe, a bank, hospital, and a butcher. The Village is open from 8am to 5pm every day, except Christmas Day. Just up the highway towards town is the region’s premier art gallery and library, Dogwood Crossing.
Dogwood Crossing, Miles, is a centre for community, creativity and inspiration. Offering a first-class regional art gallery, library, IT centre event space, workshop room and social history displays, Dogwood Crossing is the leading cultural institution for the Western Downs region. The centre and its staff play a key leadership, advocacy and advisory role in the region’s arts and cultural development. The innovative centre is

strongly supported by the community it serves and is a destination frequently visited by travellers. More recently, the services it provides have been taken up by transient workers, resource companies and new families to the area. When it comes to natural attractions, the Chinaman’s Lagoon and Gil Weir just to the south of town on the Leichhardt Hwy should not be missed.
AS WELL as Miles’ own state school, the area also boasts thriving state schools at Drillham, Dulacca, Condamine, Wandoan and Taroom. In 2013 Miles State School became one of Queensland’s first Independent Public Schools. A trial program for a period of four years, the Independent Public School initiative aims to increase autonomy in decision making, cut red tape and remove layers of management to improve outcomes for students. The move has already seen great success among students. After completing their schooling with a tight-knit group of friends at primary school, many students go on to study at Miles State High School. A jewel in the school’s crown is the state-of-the-art Trade Training Centre. The Miles High Training Centre provides a range of quality trade
training opportunities for students in the areas of engineering and furnishings. Students in the centre work on projects that are used within the wider Miles community with quality projects ranging from picnic tables and seating that will be used in local estates, display cabinets for the Miles Historical Village and a range of products for other local organisations. The other standout in the Miles district’s educational capacity is Columboola Environmental Centre which all are proud of. The Education Queensland centre can offer full program support for up to 75 students. The expert teaching team runs activities such as water ecology, canoeing, orienteering, high and low ropes, problem solving and team building, to name a few, for visiting school groups from right across Queensland.

LUDWIG Leichhardt left his mark "LL. 1844" on what is now an historic coolibah tree in the main street. The northern entrance to the town is marked by a historic Steel Wings windmill and the main street of the town is where travellers will find that all their needs can be provided for. The information centre has internet access and National Parks and Wildlife information. The museum can be opened by arrangement. The town also provides for many outdoor activities. There is a river walk from the caravan park to the town centre and Gilberts Lookout with a panoramic view of the town and surrounding countryside. Golf, lawn bowls and tennis are offered year round. The agricultural show is held on the first weekend in May, with rodeos and campdrafts staged throughout the year. Another highlight on the social calendar is the huge Dawson River Festival, usually held bi-annually around September, which attracts hundreds of visitors to the area. The Taroom Racecourse is one of only four
racecourses in Queensland that runs in an anti-clockwise direction and it is one of the oldest racecourses in Queensland, dating back to 1871 The district is renowned for quality beef production, grain crops and forestry products. Several large cattle studs hold annual sales with buyers travelling from across the state. Visitors enjoy fishing on the Dawson River and at the Glebe Weir, which is a popular boating, and camping spot. Flagstaff Hill, 82km north of Taroom has a historically significant section of road, which was constructed in the early 1860s by hand, using large rock slabs. This was part of the road which was used to carry wool from Roma to the port at Rockhampton Isla Gorge National Park sits alongside the Leichhardt Highway north of Taroom. A short drive will take you to the lookout and camping ground with spectacular views of the Gorge. THE Maranoa Region, covering an area of 58,830km2 and home to roughly 13,000 people, has been one of the major economic centres for South West Queensland for decades. Renowned for its role in the agricultural and resource sectors, the region has since become a vibrant economic hub with its growing expansion into industries like energy and tourism. With one of the lowest unemployment rates in Queensland and a 0.24% growth in the labour force since 2015, the region continues to expand into innovative new industries. Apart from Roma, some of the Maranoa’s most prominent towns include Mitchell, Wallumbilla, Surat, Yuleba and Injune.
STUNNING SURROUNDS: Roma has beautiful sights worth seeing.
ROMA GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

A HUB OF ACTIVITY AND FUN Roma offers something for everyone
AFTER a long day of working hard, Roma residents love nothing more than kicking back and enjoying one of the many activities the town has to offer.
IMPORTANT ROLE: The cattle indsutry in Roma is integral to the town’s success. ROMA and the Maranoa have been and remain a hub for economic activity and growth in Regional Queensland. With new developments in both the private and government sectors happening all over the Maranoa, steady growth is a certainty. People looking to move to or invest in the Maranoa Page 20
have plenty of reasons to be excited. Roma is in a better position than many other regional areas and key industries are all strong, with businesses like Royal on 99 and refurbishments like MGA Insurance lighting up the main centre of Roma. It has given the town a new spark and the excitement is palpabale.
Record cattle prices and rain have meant graziers are doing better which brings trade to town. Roma is in line for a new hospital in the next twelve months and a new fire station is already being built. Both of which means more jobs in town and reinforces that Roma is a growing government hub.
PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED It is a great time to Live, Work and Invest in the Maranoa. Commerce Roma is the region’s leading Chamber of Commerce with over 100 members and growing. With a five year plan for the chamber and the economic communitywell underway, Roma is continually going from strength to strength.
Maranoa PCYC FOR those of you looking for a bit of fun and fitness, the Maranoa PCYC is the way to go for all kinds of sports. Started in 2012, the centre offers a variety of different services, from badminton to basketball to boxing and everything in between. PCYC branch manager Sgt Greg Caletti said the centre had grown since its creation. "By the end of December 2013 we had a membership of around 1000," he said. "All funds generated through our PCYC go back into the PCYC through crime prevention programs and to provide a safe environment for our youth." Sgt Caletti said the options for physical activity and fun were endless. Community Arts Centre LOOKING for something to do with your hands? Why not learn a new skill by taking a class at the Community Arts Centre. The Silversmiths Roma Group Inc. leader Helen McEwan believes working
with silver is an enjoyable and rewarding hobby to take part in. "I have a very stressful job that involves a lot of concentration and very long hours but coming down here just resets my mind," Ms McEwan said. "And at the end of the day you get to take home a beautiful piece of jewellery." The silversmith workshops operate every fourth Saturday from 9am-4pm and every Friday night from 6.30pm at Studio 2, Roma Community Arts Centre. Pools THE Denise Spencer Memorial Pool, named after the Roma Olympic athlete from the 1940s and 1950s, is open most of the year and runs classes and swimming squad for kids. There is also a water play park at the pool which the kids are sure to love. Walking and Parks The Adungadoo Walkway, which takes runners and walkers along the Bungil Creek through the middle of town, has plenty of greenery, BBQ areas and the famous Yarning Circle, used by the Mandandanji people for special occasions. The walkway leads into the Big Rig Parklands.

ULTIMATE REAL ESTATE :: CENTRAL HIGHLANDS
DISCOVER THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS With so much to offer travellers and residents, a move to the Central Highlands is one you will always remember
STUNNING FAIRBAIRN DAM PHOTO: TOURISM AND EVENTS QUEENSLAND/BLINK PHOTOGRAPHY Emerald and the Central Highlands are a stunning part of Queensland waiting to be explored. Emerald was established in 1879 with the intention of providing a base for the building of the Western Railway. A large, modern country town, Emerald was named after ‘Emerald Downs Hill’, which is located just north of the town. Emerald is the hub of the Central Highlands and the gateway to the richest sapphire fields in the southern hemisphere, the Sapphire Gemfields. Agriculture in the region is thriving and this was due in part to the construction of the Fairbairn Dam and the Emerald Irrigation Scheme in 1972. These developments allowed for the significant growth of agriculture in the area and from there, many more initiatives and developments have stemmed. Coal mining with the Bowen Basin began in 1977 and this was initiated through the dam constructions and its associated Lake Maraboon. Fairbairn Dam is a holiday destination in itself with a selection of cabin, caravan and camping accommodation. The lake is stocked with eight different kinds of fish including barramundi, but is famous for the Red Claw Crayfish. Once famous for its reputation as a major sunflower producer, Emerald is now home to the world's biggest Van Gogh sunflower painting on an easel located in Morton Park at the western end of Clermont Street (Capricorn Highway). The superstructure is 25 metres high with approximately 13.6 tonnes of steel involved in its construction. And while Emerald may be the hub of the Central Highlands – the surrounding towns and communities also have so much to offer. Encompassing an area of around 60,000 square kilometres, the Central Highlands falls just short of the size of Tasmania. Home to 30,000 people in thirteen communities, the Central Highlands is a terrific area to live and raise a family. The Central Highland communities, along with the aforementioned Emerald, include the Sapphire Gemfields, Arcadia Valley, Bauhinia, Blackwater, Bluff, Capella, Comet, Dingo, Duaringa, Rolleston, Springsure and Tieri. Sapphire Gemfields
Covering almost 900 square kilometres, the Sapphire Gemfields is one of the world’s largest sapphire fields, and takes in the townships of Anakie, Rubyvale, Sapphire and Willows Gemfields. The sapphire fields date back to 1875 when the first gem was found by a Railway Surveyor. Visitors now come from all over the world to search for the blue, green, yellow, parti-coloured and star sapphires. Arcadia Valley Arcadia Valley is a must see as it adjoins the stunning Canarvan Ranges, and supports extensive pastoral and agricultural holdings. Lake Nuga Nuga is within the locality and as part of the Nuga Nuga National Park, it is the largest natural lake in the Central Queensland sandstone belt and is popular for bird-watching (over 150 kinds of birds), fishing and canoeing. Bauhinia The small town of Bauhinia is just off the Capricorn Highway or on the Dawson Highway to Moura, but well worth the detour. Established in 1967 to service a growing centre for cattle and grain, Bauhinia has a range of attractions that capture the spirit of Central Queensland. Whether it is fishing in renowned Zamia lake, water skiing or swimming in nearby Fairfield Lake or 4x4’ing through ‘Cattle Dip Gorge’ in the Expedition Ranges a trip to this gorgeous town is well worth a visit. Blackwater Blackwater has grown to become an important service centre with exceptional facilities for visitors and its 5000 residents. Blackwater is unabashedly a coal mining town and earns its title as the ‘coal mining capital of Queensland’ by its central location and substantial export earnings. While visiting, a stop into the visitor information centre, also known as the Blackwater International Coal Centre, is a must. Opened in 2008, the one-of-a-kind Blackwater International Coal Centre showcases the Australian coal industry and provides an interactive learning experience. Incorporating over twenty separate exhibits, the BICC explores the past, present and future of the coal mining industry. Facilities include a cafe, cinema, picnic area, Japanese and Timeless Gardens. Another attraction of Blackwater is the Bedford Weir on the Mackenzie River, which is a popular spot for skiing, boating and fishing. Bluff Bluff’s location between some of Queensland’s largest coal mines and the port of Gladstone has led to it becoming a major interchange station for large coal trains. Visiting the town of Bluff is like being immersed in a full-scale model railway, and should be on the ‘must see’ list for all train buffs. Where you find railway stations, you often find beautifully manicured gardens and Bluff is no exception. The town’s people take great pride in the results

of their green thumbs and hard work. Capella Capella offers visitors the chance to travel and see the spectacular Peak Range, and the scenic agricultural and grazing lands that surround it. The rich fertile soils of the Peak Downs and a 590mm rainfall produce millions of tonnes of sorghum, sunflower, wheat, legumes and beef annually. The local Pioneer Village is a great place to stop and visit and includes the ‘Peak Downs’ Homestead, Australia’s largest restored shingle-roofed station homestead. Built in 1869 from local pit-sawn spotted gum, the Homestead is a tribute to 19th century carpentry Comet Comet is one of the earliest townships in the region and this small rural town is a service centre for the local farming community and draws its name from the Comet River. The river itself was named after Ludwig Leichhardt’s observation of Haley’s Comet in the skies during his travels through Central Queensland in the late 1800’s. Here you can see the tree trunk that Ludwig Leichhardt marked with ‘Dig’ during his exploration of the region in 1844. ‘Dig’ indicated to those who followed that he had buried food and journals in this spot. Enjoy a quiet drink on the shady verandah of the historic Comet River Hotel, and watch the world go by. Dingo Dingo is busy small town which sits on two major highways that service the beef, timber and coal industries. Dingo is home to the only known life-size bronze dingo statue. Just out of town is an exciting host cattle property. Visitors can take the tour and try their hand at horse riding, helicopter flights, quad riding, camp outs and didgeridoo making. If you are in the area in July, join visitors from across Australia and experience a real-life country race meeting including the World Dingo trap throwing. The township of Dingo is a convenient access point for exploring the Blackdown Tablelands, a sandstone plateau rising abruptly from the surrounding plains. Blackdown Tableland National Park is home to rare fauna, diverse vegetations, Aboriginal culture and spectacular scenery. Duaringa Duaringa is one of the oldest townships in the region, with buildings dating back to the 1860s. An example of this rich history can still be seen at the local hotel, where a portion has been preserved to show how the pioneers lived. The Duaringa Tourist Information Centre is artistic inside and out. From the highway, you can see the huge mural local artists created on its feature wall. On the inside, the Centre has local arts and crafts for sale and plenty of information to offer on the history and attractions of the town.
Mackenzie Park is a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch under the shade of the budgeroo tree and hear the splash of the waterfall in the lagoon. At night see the waterfall lit up to create colourful reflections on the sand and the lagoon. Anglers can try their luck in the Mackenzie River 20km to the north, or in the Dawson River 9km to the south-east. Rolleston The township of Rolleston was famous for the notorious Kenniff Brothers, the last of the legendary Queensland bushrangers. Today, Rolleston lies in the centre of a rich, resourceful and productive valley, bordered by the sandstone cliffs that follow the edges of the Carnarvon, Expedition and Shotover Ranges. The turn-off to one of Queensland’s most famous National Parks, Carnarvon Gorge, is 60km south of Rolleston. Featuring spectacular sandstone cliffs and gorges, clear streams and many unique species of ferns, palms and trees, the park also provides camping and lodge accommodation. On the access road is the Rewan Memorial, which marks the site of an American aircraft which crashed in 1943. There are many other natural attractions in the area, including the Arcadia Valley, Lake Nuga Nuga, and Lonesome National Park. Springsure Approaching from the south, Springsure is seen as an attractive township nestled into the foothills of the prominent Mt Zamia escarpment, with the illuminated ‘Virgin Rock’ on the eastern side of the range. In town, the heritage listed Hospital and museum contains many interesting relics, and the Yumba Burin keeping place at the local cemetery can be visited accompanied by the caretaker. 10km south-west of Springsure is the historic complex of Old Rainworth Fort, made up of the unique stone building of the ‘fort’, and the Cairdbeign Homestead and School. Local elder and traditional owner, Lindsay Black, runs regular tag-along 4WD drives through the district. These tours provide a fascinating glimpse into the history and cultures of the Aboriginals and pioneering families. The region has several unique National Parks: Minerva Hills National Park; Ka Ka Mundi, and Salvator Rosa sections of the Carnarvon National Park. Tieri The town of Tieri was established by Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Holdings Pty Ltd to house the employees of the Oaky Creek Mine, 14km to the east. Tieri also holds the distinction of being rated as the postcode with the highest average income earnings per person in Queensland by the Australian Tax Office since 1998. Bundoora Dam is located nearby, and is a popular spot for camping, boating and fishing. The region has so much to offer thanks to through its rich agriculture and mineral reserves.

ULTIMATE REAL ESTATE :: BLACKALL
BLACKALL IS SURE TO SURPRISE Boasting a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, a trip to Blackall is sure to wow all visitors
WORTH A VISIT: THE BLACKALL WOOLSCOUR. PHOTO:TOURISM AND EVENTS QUEENSLAND
BEYOND THE BLACK STUMP: The Black Stump is integral to the town. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED AS FAR as friendly, local atmosphere’s go — you would be hard pressed to find one more welcoming than the spirit of Blackall. This is due in part to the communities “salt of the Earth” folk and the peaceful and relaxed atmosphere of the town. Blackall is located on the Matilda Highway and was named after Sir Samuel Blackall, the second Governor of Queensland. Art holds a significant place in the Blackall story, and a visit will allow you to marvel at the renowned works of sculptor Richard Moffat such as the Eagles Nest, Circle of Friends and Roly Poly and a three metre high Bottle Tree by Adriaan Vanderlugt, all made from scrap metal. Lifespan by Fredrick White is made
largely from recycled bore casing, while Robert Bridgewater created the exceptional wood carvings “Wood, Water and Wool” and Jennie Scott’s Cutting Out depicts a rider and horse cutting out a steer. Also, one is not to forget to check out the numerous murals created by local artist Bob Wilson which are peppered throughout the town. The Don depicts wool being carted in the Blackall area in the 1920’s, and another exceptional piece lives at the Pioneer Bore. Along with the town’s stunning art — Blackall is home to many other significant sights and people. Blade shearer Jack Howe is renowned for setting the sheep shearing world record in 1892 at Alice Downs and he hailed from Blackall. Officially putting the town on the map due to his achievement, Jack Howe shorn 321 sheep in seven hours and 40 minutes. That incredible world record would go on to stand for another 58 years.
THE BLACKALL WOOLSCOUR: TRULY PICTURESQUE PHOTO: TOURISM AND EVENTS QUEENSLANDOTO: Blackall was also the first Outback town to start drilling an artesian bore back in 1885. The historic Blackall Woolscour is the only wool-washing plant left fully intact in Australia and is an absolute must-see. It is open seven days a week all year round with hourly tours and runs on steam from May through to August. The Woolscour has one of the few remaining examples of a free flowing artesian bore. Also, as many may already know, Blackall is home to the Black Stump, which was used for surveying purposes and permanently marks the original Astro Station established in 1887. Anything west of this point is said to be “beyond the black stump”. In Shamrock Street you will find the Australian Labor Federation Memorial which commemorates the first meeting of the first shearers union in December 1886. In Memorial Park is a statue of Major Edgar
Towner who was awarded the Victoria Cross and the Military Cross in WW1. A walk down Hawthorne Street will delight visitors when they stumble across the Masonic Lodge, built in 1908, and restored to its original condition. Ram Park is another spot in the town which is well-worth a visit. Boasting the famous “Big Ram” — Ram Park symbolises the importance of the wool industry to the town of Blackall. A trip to Blackall would not be complete without a stroll along the Barcoo River. Marvel at the stunning bird and wild life and take your time soaking in the sights. Last but certainly not least, Blackall’s Aquatic Centre offers the perfect space to unwind after all of your sightseeing. Boasting an artesian bubble-spa and 50m swimming pool — the Aquatic Centre is the ideal place to rest, relax and revive. Page 37

Cunnamulla is never shy of a great family-friendly event and it is always a good idea to plan a trip around either the annual show, a local race meeting or, the highlight event of each year, being the annual "Cunnamulla Fella Festival". Cowboys, bull riders, shearers and stockmen all converge on the famous town for one of the most diverse events in the state. As previously mentioned, the Warrego River is a truly stunning attraction and there is no better way to take in the sights than on a Warrego Boat Cruise, or with a simple trail walk along its banks. The Artesian Time Tunnel Experience at the Cunnamulla Fella Centre pays homage to the fact that Cunnamulla is home to an underground artesian water supply.
