Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray…” LUKE 11:1

hey were our Lord’s own hand-picked disciples—just twelve in number—but their earnest question spoke for all the followers of Jesus Christ who would come in later generations: Teach us to pray, Lord. Give us the words to speak with our Father in heaven… Jesus’ answer is a masterpiece of devotional poetry: so compact in form, so economical in expression, yet revealing a deep spirituality of mankind’s trust in a loving, fatherly God. It would eventually become known as “The Lord’s Prayer”—not because it is reserved for the lordly few, but because it is the special prayer Jesus himself taught to all mankind: his tender instruction to God’s children. The Lord’s Prayer is the most beloved devotional statement in the Armenian Church: a source of inner strength and consolation; the climactic hymn of the Divine Liturgy; and surely one of the most exquisite verbal gems of the Armenian language. No other words dwell as deeply and permanently in the Armenian Christian heart. Sung with bold conviction in church, uttered in quiet moments of private joy and grief,

triumph and desperation, the Hayr Mer unites a people scattered across the world. The 2012 Calendar of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America invites readers to envision how the Hayr Mer filled the life of the Armenian people in ages past: how its vivid imagery was perceived in the splendor of Armenia’s landscape, and how Armenian craftsmen expressed elements of the prayer in profound works of creative imagination. Throughout the calendar, the words of the Hayr Mer are brought to life in evocative photographs of the Armenian homeland. These subtle, thought-provoking pairings of word and image seek to illuminate the prayer’s spiritual depth, and its eternal meaning for the Armenian Church. The universal character of the Lord’s Prayer resonates in the Eastern Diocese’s theme for 2012, “The Call to Serve: Ministry of the Faithful.” Hearing God’s call, discerning His will, and fulfilling His purpose as lay ministers of the church, all stand on the foundation laid by Jesus Christ, when he first taught the disciples—and all of us—how to pray to Hayr Mer: our Father in heaven.
