Ever wondered why the Glen Innes region is called ‘Celtic Country’? The early settlers in the area were mostly Scots. The first to settle here was a Cambridge-educated barrister from Selkirkshire named Archibald Boyd. In 1838 he established what is now known as Stonehenge Station.

Explore a rich and diverse range of fascinating stories
history & heritage They were two stockmen with long, flowing beards who roamed the vast, untamed plains of New England. The stockmen were John Duval and William Chandler. Today their names are perpetuated in the Glen Innes folk museum (one of Australia’s finest), the Land of the Beardies History House. Duval and Chandler are deeply connected with the romance of old Glen Innes, for they guided Glen Innes’ first settler, Scottish barrister Archibald Boyd to the district. Cambridgeeducated Boyd migrated to NSW in 1838 and took up Boyd’s Plains, at the source of Beardy Waters, and two other NSW properties. With Duval and Chandler, Archibald Boyd is remembered as part of Glen Innes’ rich history,
there’s St Joseph’s Convent on the site where Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop, signed the deeds for the original convent. History is reflected in the district’s tranquil rural villages such as Deepwater and Emmaville, that inspired poets such as Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson. The many Scottish settlers who were part of Glen Innes’ proud heritage are immortalised in the Australian Standing Stones, that is the official national monument to all Australia’s Celtic pioneers.
Glen Innes is one of the few towns in NSW to retain its federation style buildings. a history reflected in the charming, colonial main street. Grey Street is lined with more than 50 Heritage listed buildings, including the beautiful stone courthouse, built before they hanged Ned Kelly. There’s an 1860 pub that was serving drinks when Burke and Wills crossed the continent. On the tourist drive, you pass the Uniting Church honouring a pioneering minister who was robbed by notorious bushranger Thunderbolt, and

The Ngarabal (also: Ngoorabul, Ngarrabul, Ngarrbal) people are the traditional Aboriginal owners of the Glen Innes area. The Ngarabal name of the township of Glen Innes is Gindaaydjin, meaning ‘plenty of big round stones on clear plains’, and the region historically has been a siginificant meeting place for various indigenous tribes.

At the right time of year and with a permit cast a line to catch a Murray Cod, which has an outstanding reputation in the region, drawing families, celebrities and fishing writers. However, other species also abound around Glen Innes, like rainbow and brown trout, yellowbelly, silver perch, redfin and catfish. About half an hour from Glen Innes are the neighbouring World Heritage listed Washpool and Gibraltar Ranges National Parks. Both parks share an impressive network of walking tracks that present some spectacular and varied wilderness walking opportunities. An easy amble along the beautiful Coombadhja Creek takes you through rainforest and dry forest areas, where you will see rare and ancient giant red cedar trees, coachwood, crabapple and figs. If stamina and time permit, the extraordinary Gibraltar-Washpool World Heritage walk is an unforgettable multi-day journey through rugged mountains on the edge of the Great

‘must see’ top 5 nature experiences WASHPOOL NATIONAL PARK Take time out to explore the unparalleled landscape of Washpool National Park, a place of steep gorges, clear waters and magnificent tracts of ancient rainforest. You’ll find some of the most varied and least-disturbed forest in NSW, including the world’s largest stand of coachwood trees and extraordinary specimens of giant red cedar.
GIBRALTAR RANGE NATIONAL PARK Gibraltar Range has so many plants and animals descended from the dinosaur age, that it’s part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, a series of parks and reserves stretching from Barrington Tops to southern Queensland. That’s only the start of what makes this a remarkable natural playground.
MANN RIVER NATURE RESERVE With loads of natural beauty and historic significance, Mann River Nature Reserve is perched on the eastern edge of the New England Tablelands. With superb scenic views across The Great Dividing Range, it’s ideal for camping or stopping for a picnic on a car tour. Nature lovers will revel in the abundant wildlife, crystal clear waters and clear mountain air.
KINGS PLAINS NATIONAL PARK Set among rolling farmlands, Kings Plains National Park is a destination for the adventurous, independent traveller. Bushwalking along the creek, with its pools and rapids, to Kings Plain Falls is the park’s biggest attraction. Hiking or mountain biking along the park’s 15km of management trails takes you through grassy and shrubby woodlands, and a rare forest of McKies stringybark.
LITTLE LLANGOTHLIN NATURE RESERVE Little Llangothlin Nature Reserve covers 257 hectares and includes Little Llangothlin Lagoon of approx. 120 hectares and a portion of the smaller Billy Bung Lagoon. The Reserve is easily accessible by driving from Glen Innes, making it a great destination for car touring and day trips. Excellent for bushwalking along the Lagoon Circuit walking track, with plenty of birdwatching opportunities along the way.

Enjoy birdwatching around Little Llangothlin picnic area and wander down to the nearby viewing platform. Meander along the gentle Lagoon Circuit walking track and take advantage of the many great vantage points to admire this spectacular natural setting and its water birds. The Reserve was declared a ‘Wetland of International Importance’ in 1996 and is an important refuge for migrating birds. At Kings Plains National Park you can expect to see all sorts of birds and wildlife, including brightly coloured turquoise parrots and crimson rosellas.

around town Step back in time when you walk the Glen Innes CBD and gaze at the historic buildings. Glen Innes CBD is situated one block to the west of the New England Highway, making it easy to park and explore on foot. At the northern end there’s the beautiful basalt stone courthouse built in 1873. Near the centre, the imposing Town Hall, reflecting all the grandeur of the Victorian era. A few doors away, the Westpac Bank is a stunning piece of architecture with its iconic columns and stables at the rear.

Grey Street and its side streets are a great place to shop. You will get a warm country welcome and great old-fashioned customer service. A detailed brochure on the Heritage Building Walk is available from the Visitor Information Centre. Loose yourself in one of two bookstores. The Big Book Store on Ferguson Street holds tens of thousands of secondhand, old and rare titles. Explore the inside of the old bank building while browsing in The Book Market on Grey Street, run by a father and son team who have hand picked every book in the store. Glen Innes offers a great range of activities for visitors. You can fossick for sapphires, emeralds and topaz in some of the world’s richest gemfields. The nearby towns of Emmaville, Torrington and Stannum were once thriving 10

At 1072 metres above sea level in Glen Innes, with nearby hills rising to 1500 metres at Ben Lomond and in the Deepwater district, the region enjoys four distinct seasons. Average temperatures range in summer from a minimum 12.5ยบC to a maximum 26ยบC; winter averages a minimum 1ยบC to maximum 13.5ยบC.

Glen Innes Art Gallery The Chapel Theatre Glen Innes is fiercely proud of its Chapel Theatre. Rightly so. This is not just another small cog in some huge multi-national cinema chain. Not at all. Run entirely by volunteers, the Chapel Theatre serves as a model for true community-based cinemas and theatres across Australia. Originally built as a Methodist church in 1885, it was purchased in 1983 by the Glen Innes Arts Council Inc. (which, by the way, was formed in 1944 and is the oldest continuing Arts Council in NSW) and converted to a theatre.
Glen Innes Art Gallery sits in the heart of Glen Innes. Established in 2005 the gallery offers changing exhibitions of contemporary art, across a range of mediums. Both local artists, and those from across the region exhibit frequently, showcasing a diverse mix of creative talent, in a modern and dedicated space.

arts & culture Glen Innes has a thriving arts scene. The Glen Innes Arts Council, created in 1944, is the oldest continuously operating Arts Council in Australia. The Arts Council shows popular and art house films in the 122-year-old ex church that is now the Chapel Theatre. The space is often put to use for theatre productions, concerts and touring groups. The Arts Council’s own performances have included hits such as ‘Chicago’, ‘The Full Monty’ and ‘Nunsense’, invariably drawing packed audiences. You can see the Chapel Theatre on the corner of Bourke and Church Streets (the New England Highway). Since 1996, Glen Innes has been home to Arts North West, the regional art board for the New England North West of NSW. Backed by the regional local governments and the state government through Arts NSW, Arts North West supports arts and culture across the whole region. Arts North West provides advice on funding and creative project management for communities to enable them to develop arts projects and cultural infrastructure. A far-sighted initiative of Glen Severn Council, TAFE and the community, the Glen Innes Learning Centre provides 24 hour access for young and mature students to Armidale’s University of New England. Journey into Australia’s romantic past...
scenic drives SCENIC DRIVE 11: The mining villages The drive takes you past the town’s landscaped parklands, spectacular in autumn, the Beardies History House and the hospital, across the now closed railway line, a part of the 1888 Great Northern Railway that was once the main freight line from Sydney to Brisbane. Turn right at the sign to Emmaville and drive through a majestic avenue of poplars, the road leads out through prime New England pasture known for beef cattle, fine wool sheep and seasonal crops. Brown and dry during the notoriously cold frosty winters, these pastures burst vividly to life in spring. The drive crosses Reddestone Creek, home of the prized blue sapphires and the site of the discovery of tusks of a giant Diprotodon, now on display at the Emmaville Mining Museum. The Emmaville to Torrington road is unsealed and weather dependent. It is advisable to check the condition before travelling, particularly if towing. Known locally as ‘the Zig Zag’, the road winds downhill past rocky outcrops, to arrive at Glen Creek. Continuing, you climb through the spectacular granite territory of the Torrington State Conservation Area. See the glistening rockface of Feathertop to the right. Only a few kilometers from here is the entrance to Curnows Mine, which is open to the public for fossicking, and accessed by a short walk through the State Conservation Area gate. camp site from where the notorious bushranger evaded police, and the enigmatic Mystery Face are a short drive further along. Deepwater is home to a small but thriving community. Golf, fishing and the annual races attract locals and visitors alike. Continuing south from Deepwater is the historic locality of Dundee, home to prime sheep and grazing properties. Further south is the Heritage Park on the Beardy Waters, a great shady picnic spot, before continuing on to Glen Innes. SCENIC DRIVE 2: The mountain villages Travelling south from Glen Innes, along the New England Highway, the drive passes through rolling countryside, and majestic stands of elm and poplar trees, aflame with colour in autumn. The Stonehenge Recreation Reserve, is accessed through a stone gateway 12km south of Glen Innes. Wander through the acres of parkland

and explore the towering granite boulders that make it a popular spot to enjoy a picnic beneath the shady trees. Balancing Rock is just 500m away. The giant boulder is spectacularly balanced on a point. The picturesque village of Glencoe is 22km south of Glen Innes, and known for sheep and cattle farming. The Red Lion Tavern is an atmospheric old English style pub, a perfect stop for lunch and refreshments.
Continuing south, wind high into the Ben Lomond range to 1500m. The village of Ben Lomond, the top of the Great Dividing Range, was once a thriving town on the Great
Northern Railway. The station c.1844 was the highest on the National Line. The Brothers Mountains rise in the east, and to the north west lies Mt Rumbee. Choose one of two routes to travel back to Glen Innes. Enjoy panoramic views and wind along the top of the range on an unsealed road via Maybole and Grahams valley. Alternatively travel back via the NE Highway. There is the option to divert into Little Llangothlin Nature Reserve, a 120 hectare fresh water lagoon, home to over 100 bird species including migratory waterfowl, nomadic pelicans and sea eagles. events Come to Glen Innes, home of the Australian Standing Stones and celebrate the great and varied traditions of Celtic culture with song, dance, history and food. The Australian Celtic Festival is unique for its colour, spectacle and range of entertainment and history.
Be sure to mark the first weekend of May on the calendar for the Australian Celtic Festival, held annually every year. Crowds pour into Glen Innes for the Celtic Festival attracted by the Celtic experience, Australian Standing Stones, the opportunity to meet with friends and to enjoy our famous country hospitality. The festival’s main venue is the Australian Standing Stones, an array of granite monoliths like those around which the ancient Celts danced. To rise at dawn and listen to the eerie skirl of pipes in the autumn mists at the Standing Stones is an experience not to be missed. The four day festival provides non stop entertainment including the street parade, Celtic Strongman events, kirking of the Tartan, massed bands, children’s entertainment, dancing, flag raising ceremonies, poets breakfasts, yard dog trials, market stalls, fun run and Celtic foods.
Don’t miss the annual Deepwater Scarecrow and Wool festival, a fun family friendly weekend where scarecrows spring to life in unison with the changing seasons and the end of frosty, wintry months. The rich local wool heritage of the region is showcased with local fleece on display, spinning demonstrations and shearing demonstrations throughout the festival. The Emmaville Sheep Races in March showcase the good natured humour you’d expect from a country town and is another ‘must-see’ event. Ever since sapphires were discover in the creek gullies west of Glen Innes, fossickers have been drawn to the area in search of the deep blue stones for which Glen Innes is famous. As the
largest annual fossicking, gem and jewellery show in NSW, Minerama has been drawing regular visitors to Glen Innes for almost 20 years. Held every year in March, Minerama is perfect for all gem lovers, rockhounds and outdoor adventurers. Search for buried treasure in Celtic Country with a fabulous 3 day program (Friday to Sunday) of guided fossicking field trips to suit both beginner and experienced gem stone hunters.

fossicking Ever since sapphires were discovered in the creek gullies west of Glen Innes, professional and amateur fossickers have been drawn to the area in search of the famous deep blue stones. The area surrounding Glen Innes is part of the most prolific sapphire region in New South Wales, and has the world’s richest mineral diversity belt. The region is internationally renowned for deep rich, royal blue sapphires. As well as sapphires, try your luck at unearthing topaz, quartz crystals, gold, zircons, aquamarine, fluorite, beryl, emeralds (just to name a few). You don’t need much equipment to go fossicking. Basic gear includes a sieve, a miner’s pick, a scratching blade, shovel and bucket. You can bring your own gear, hire some in town, or book a trip with a local guide to try your luck. Most of the stones are found in a layer of earth called the wash, which sits between the clay bed and the subsoil. rock The Glen Innes district is renowned for its unique rock formations. Stonehenge Recreation Park, just 12km south of Glen Innes, is a great bouldering spot, with over seventy routes.
