THE PREMIER LEADER DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTION IN THE NATION The United States Military Academy is renowned because of its historic and distinguished reputation as a military academy, and as a leading, progressive institution of higher education. Made legendary in books and movies produced over the years, the Academy’s “Long Gray Line” of graduates includes some of our nation’s most famous and influential men: Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, George S. Patton, Omar Bradley, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower and Norman Schwarzkopf. Because of this superb education and leadership experience, West Point graduates historically have been sought for high level civilian and military leadership positions. Their numbers include two U.S. presidents, several ambassadors, state governors, legislators, judges, cabinet members, educators, astronauts and corporate executives. Today, West Point continues to provide hundreds of young men and women the unique opportunity to develop physically, ethically and intellectually while building a foundation for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career as an Army officer in the service of our nation. Cadets have much more responsibility in running the Academy than students in most other colleges or universities. It adds to the leadership experience. Cadets succeed at West Point because of the support they receive from the staff and faculty. After all, many faculty members are West Point graduates and understand the challenge cadets face on a daily basis. They also serve as ideal role models, showing cadets what Army life is like. MILITARY ACADEMY

The mission of the U.S. Military Academy is to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country; professional growth throughout a career as an officer in the U.S. Army; and a lifetime of selfless service to the Nation. Founded on March 16, 1802, the Academy celebrated its Bicentennial in 2002. But West Point’s role in America’s history dates to the Revolutionary War, when both sides realized the strategic importance of the commanding plateau on the west bank of the Hudson River. Gen. George Washington considered West Point to be the most strategic position in America. He personally selected Thaddeus Kosciuszko, one of the heroes of Saratoga, to design the fortifications in 1778 after problems arose with French engineers originally placed in charge of the design. In 1779, General Washington transferred his headquarters to West Point. Continental soldiers built forts, batteries and defensive barriers. A 100-ton iron chain was extended across the Hudson to control river traffic. Today, several links from that chain are arranged at Trophy Point as a reminder of West Point’s original fortifications. In 1802 President Thomas Jefferson signed the legislation establishing the U.S. Military Academy to create an institution devoted to the arts and sciences of warfare. This effectively eliminated America’s wartime reliance on foreign engineers and artillerists. West Point became the nation’s first engineering school and served as the model for engineering programs which were eventually established at other colleges. Col. Sylvanus Thayer, the “Father of the Military Academy,” served as Superintendent from 1817 through 1833. He upgraded academic standards, instilled military discipline and emphasized honorable conduct. Early graduates were largely responsible for the construction of the nation’s initial railway lines, bridges, harbors, and roads. Although the curriculum maintains its focus on engineering, in recent decades the program of instruction has markedly changed, providing cadets a selection of more than 40 majors. This tradition of academic and military excellence, guided by a demanding standard of moral and ethical conduct, remains the cornerstone of the West Point experience. It is said at West Point that “much of the history we teach was made by those people we taught.” The Academy has produced famous leaders throughout its illustrious past…Civil War Generals Grant, Sherman, Lee, and Jackson, to name but a few. In World War I, 34 of the 38 corps and division commanders were graduates. World War II would see many graduates reach brigadier general or higher, to include Eisenhower, MacArthur, Bradley and Patton. In more recent conflicts, MacArthur, Ridgway, Westmoreland, Abrams, Schwarzkopf and Abizaid were in command. Academy graduates have also excelled in air and space exploration, and countless others went on from military service to become leaders in medicine, law, business, religion and science. Since its founding, the Military Academy fulfills the same mission as it always has . . . to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets. It accomplishes this mission by developing cadets in three essential areas: intellectual, physical and military. These developmental paths are balanced and fully integrated into the daily life of each young man and woman at the Academy. Intellectual growth is fostered through an academic curriculum that provides a broad liberal education in the arts and sciences. The electives program builds upon the foundation of the core, allowing cadets to develop even greater competence in selected areas. In addition, the fields-of-study and majors nurture the development of creativity, critical thinking, and self-directed learning, essential characteristics of 21st century officers. The four-year academic experience leads to a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Army.

Physical development is achieved through a rigorous athletic and physical education program. Each cadet participates at the intercollegiate, club or intramural level each semester. This readies the cadet for the physical demands of military life and helps teach good judgment and self-discipline, even while under mental and physical stress. Military development begins with the cadet’s first day at West Point. Most military training takes place during the summer, with new cadets undergoing Cadet Basic Training, or Beast Barracks, their first year, followed the second summer by Cadet Field Training. Cadets spend their third and fourth summers serving in active Army units around the world; attending specialty training such as airborne, air assault or northern warfare or helping to train the first- and second-year cadets. The Cadet Leader Development System seeks to give the cadets increasing responsibility until they are ready to receive their commissions and assume their duties as leaders in today’s Army. Moral and ethical values guide cadets throughout their four years at West Point. Commitment to the Academy’s “Bedrock Values,” based on integrity and respect for the dignity of others, begins on the first day. Integrity is reflected in the Cadet Honor Code which states: “A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.” Respect denotes that cadets treat others with the same respect and dignity they themselves would expect. At West Point, it is not enough to train leaders—they must be leaders of character. Admission is keenly competitive and is open to young men and women from all states and territories and from every socioeconomic level. Prospective cadets must receive a nomination by a member of Congress or from the Department of the Army. The Academy seeks candidates who possess records of success in academics, athletics and leadership indicative of well-rounded individuals. Although the life of a cadet is demanding, there remains an array of club activities ranging from golf, skiing, boxing, crew and orienteering to such organizations as the cadet radio station, Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers-Big Sisters. Additionally, the U.S. Corps of Cadets hosts a Special Olympics event each spring. Today’s Military Academy is a vastly different institution from the small academy legislated into being by Congress in 1802. Originally just 1,800 acres, the Academy has grown to more than 16,000 acres. The first graduating class numbered just two men; today’s classes graduate more than 900 new officers annually, both men and women, who are prepared for leadership roles within the Army. With the expansion of knowledge and the changing needs of the United States Army and the nation, life at West Point has changed to keep pace. Ever mindful of its rich heritage, the U.S. Military Academy is developing leaders for tomorrow, and its focus remains the national needs of the 21st century.

ROBERT E. LEE ’29 The Academy’s ninth Superintendent (1852-55), Lee was a model cadet during his four years at West Point. He graduated second in his class and never earned a single demerit during his four years at the Academy. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was selected to serve as Commanding General of the Army, but instead resigned his commission and was named General-In-Chief of the Confederate Army from 1861 to 1865. Lee’s surrender to Ulysses S. Grant (USMA 1843), at Appomattox Court House, Va., ended the Civil War. Fort Lee, Va., was named in his honor. ULYSSES S. GRANT ’43 Grant distinguished himself during the Civil War at the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863; his victory secured control of the Mississippi River for the Union. President Abe Lincoln later appointed him Commanding General of the Army in March 1864. On April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House, Va., Robert E. Lee (USMA 1829) surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to him, ending the Civil War. Grant later served as the 18th President of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Today, his image graces the $50 bill. GEORGE W. GOETHALS ’80 Goethals became an architect and was builder of the Panama Canal, 1904 to 1914. JOHN J. PERSHING ’86 Considered the second most senior officer in Army history, behind only George Washington, Pershing served as commander of the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. The two-million-plus troops of the AEF made a decisive contribution to the defeat of Imperial Germany. Pershing’s abilities as a leader distinguished him among European commanders, and through repeated successes on the battlefield, promoted American prestige around the world. He served as Army Chief of Staff in 1921, and was named General of the Armies of the United States upon his retirement in 1924.

DOUGLAS MACARTHUR ’03 After World War I, MacArthur returned to West Point to serve as the Academy’s 31st Superintendent from 1919 to 1922. During that time, he was responsible for the revitalization of the Academy. He was later promoted to General of the Army and served as Supreme Allied Commander in the Pacific Theater during World War II. During that time, he received the Medal of Honor for leading defense preparation and operations on the Philippine Islands. He later served as Supreme Allied Commander, Japan, and as commander, United Nations Command in the Far East. He was one of only five officers to be promoted to General of the Army (five stars). GEORGE S. PATTON JR. ’09 “Old Blood and Guts,” Patton was one of the most colorful commanders in the Army. During World War II the famed commander of the 2nd Armored Division and later the Third Army displayed courage and daring as prominently as the pair of ivory handled revolvers he wore. Patton accomplished one of the most remarkable feats in military history in December 1944, when he quickly turned the Third Army northward to reinforce the Allied southern flank against the German attack in the Battle of the Bulge. The General’s doctrine of aggressive employment of massive armor forces continue to prove themselves in combat arenas around the world. OMAR N. BRADLEY ’15 During his career, Bradley earned a reputation as one of the best infantry commanders in World War II. He commanded the 82nd Airborne and 28th Infantry Divisions before going on to command the 1st Army and the 12th Army Group. After the war he served as Army Chief of Staff from 1948 to 1949 and served as the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1949 to 1953. He was the last Army officer to be promoted to General of the Army (five stars), and the Bradley fighting vehicle is named in his honor.

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER ’15 During World War II, Eisenhower served as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces Europe from 1943 to 1944, during which he led the D-Day invasion of Europe. During that time, he was promoted to General of the Army (five stars). After the war, he served as Army Chief of Staff from 1945 to 1948 and was named President of Columbia University in 1948. He served as the 34th President of the United States from 1953 to 1961 and was one of only five officers to be promoted to General of the Army (five stars). ALEXANDER M. HAIG JR. ’47 Haig served as Chief of Staff to President Richard Nixon from 1973 to 1974; Supreme Allied Commander in Europe 1974 to 1979; President of United Technologies Corporation 1980 to 1981 and Secretary of State during the Reagan administration from 1981 to 1982. FRANK BORMAN ’50 An astronaut from 1962 to 1970, Borman commanded the first circumlunar flight of the earth. He later served as President of Eastern Airlines. FIDEL V. RAMOS ’50 One of the Academy’s international cadets, Ramos served as a Philippine Army officer after graduation. He eventually became the country’s military Chief of Staff and later Secretary of National Defense. He also served as President of the Republic of the Philippines from 1992 to 1998. EDWIN E. ALDRIN ’51 An astronaut from 1963 to 1972, Aldrin participated in the first manned lunar landing with Michael Collins (USMA ’52) and was the second man to walk on the moon. EDWARD WHITE ’52 An astronaut from 1962 to 1967, White was the first man to walk in space and was one of the three astronauts killed in the Apollo I disaster in 1967.

H. NORMAN SCHWARZKOPF ’56 As Commander-in-Chief, United States Central Command from 1988 to 1991, Schwarzkopf’s command ultimately responded to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait with the largest U.S. deployment since the Vietnam War, including portions of the Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps as well as units from dozens of nations around the world. After retiring, Schwartzkopf received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. PETER M. DAWKINS ’59 Dawkins was Cadet Brigade Commander (First Captain of the U.S. Corps of Cadets) as a senior and became the third Heisman Trophy winner in Army football history. He later served as chairman and CEO of Primerica. JAMES V. KIMSEY ’62 Kimsey was the founding chairman of America Online, and was named chairman emeritus in 1996. He founded the Kimsey Foundation in 1996. MICHAEL W. KRZYZEWSKI ’69 Krzyzewski served as head basketball coach at West Point from 1974 to 1979 before assuming similar duties at Duke University. Krzyzewski has led the Blue Devils to three national championships and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in October 2001. He coached the U.S. at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. RAYMOND T. ODIERNO ‘76 Odierno commanded the 4th Infantry Division during the fall of 2003 which, along with Special Forces units, captured Saddam Hussein in December of that year. Odierno helped plan and coordinate the raid that netted Iraq’s fallen dictator. ROBERT S. KIMBROUGH ’89 Kimbrough was named one of 11 new astronaut candidates by NASA in May 2004. Kimbrough ranks among Army Baseball’s career leaders in saves. A veteran of Desert Storm, he currently works for NASA in Houston as a flight simulation engineer and participated in a space shuttle mission last fall.

Stationed on the first floor of Kimsey Athletic Center, Army’s athletic training department moved into its new and spacious home in the spring of 2003. The athletic training room now covers 9,500 square feet, housing the finest equipment available for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Highlights of the facility include a 1,202-square-foot cardiovascular room containing more than 25 pieces of equipment; a state-of-the-art hydrotherapy area equipped with a 2,018-square-foot rehabilitation pool, Jacuzzi, two large pools, and four regular pools; 10 treatment tables; five modular taping tables; high-density storage; and a physician’s office with X-ray capability. The training room also features a vast array of the latest treatment and rehabilitation equipment. Thanks to the expansive new treatment area, Army’s athletic training staff can service countless Black Knight athletes simultaneously so they are able to realize their full potential on the “fields of friendly strife.”

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING O’MEARA, MALEK, DAWKINS CLASS OF 1959 STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT CENTER An integral component in Army’s intercollegiate athletic program is the strength and conditioning department. The most visible sign of Army’s commitment in this area is the O’Meara, Malek, Dawkins, Class of 1959 Strength Development Center in Kimsey Athletic Center, one of the finest facilities in the nation. The monstrous 20,000-squarefoot center is located on the second floor of Kimsey Athletic Center and features 30 tons of plates and dumbbells; 15 pieces of cardiovascular equipment, including six high-speed treadmills; a stateof-the-art weight training area with 16 rack and platform training stations, as well as a separate dumbbell area; and top-of-the-line Hammer strength equipment. Under the direction of Scott Swanson, the O’Meara, Malek, Dawkins, Class of 1959 Strength Development Center rivals any training facility in the country.

ADMISSIONS TO WEST POINT

Peterson’s Guide ranks West Point as one of the most competitive colleges in the nation. There are approximately 12,000 applications each year for less than 1,200 cadet vacancies. Applicants compete for vacancies and are evaluated in three areas: academics, physical aptitude and demonstrated leadership ability. Cadet vacancies are allocated to each member of Congress and to the representatives to Congress from Washington, D.C., Guam, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, American Samoa and the Mariana Islands. Many foreign governments are also invited to nominate cadets under a Department of State program, so the student population at West Point is incredibly diverse. The following is an overview of the first three steps toward gaining admittance to West Point. Determine if you meet entrance requirements: To meet West Point’s minimum entrance requirements, you must: be at least 17 but not yet 23 on the day you enter West Point; be a U.S. citizen at the time you enter (except for foreign cadets as noted above); not be married or pregnant, nor have a legal obligation to support a child or other dependent. Additionally, you must meet academic, medical and physical qualifications. To be considered academically qualified, you should have an above-average high school or college

academic record and strong performance on the standardized American College Testing (ACT) Assessment Program Exam or the College Board Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Additionally, you should take a strong college preparatory program in high school, including four years of English, four years of math (including trigonometry), two years of laboratory science, two years of a foreign language and one year of U.S. history. To be medically qualified, you must be in good physical and mental health and pass a medical exam administered by the Department of Defense. To meet physical qualification standards, you must demonstrate above-average strength, endurance and agility. The West Point Field Force administers a Physical Aptitude Exam to measure these traits. The exam includes: pull-ups for men/flexed arm hang for women, basketball throw from the kneeling position, standing long jump and 300-yard shuttle run. Apply for a nomination: A nomination is the legal authority for West Point to consider a candidate for admission. Nominations are available from every member of Congress and from the representatives to Congress listed above. At a minimum, you should apply to your two senators, your representative and the Vice President. Long recognized as one of the premier academic institutions in the United States, the U.S. Military Academy provides a challenging curriculum that culminates in a bachelor of science degree upon graduation. An array of over 40 majors in the academic program are available to cadets as West Point strives to educate and train the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate shall have the attributes essential to professional growth as an officer in the regular Army. The USMA curriculum is also geared toward providing West Point graduates with an intellectual foundation for increasing responsibility (as they ascend the ranks) through a balanced undergraduate education. The Academy’s highly competitive academic environment, coupled with its broad-based academic curriculum, has helped West Point rank fourth nationally in the number of both Rhodes Scholars and Hertz Scholars that it has produced. The West Point curriculum is divided into three portions - core courses, an engineering sequence and a field of study. Cadets are required to take 26 core courses plus five additional classes in one of seven engineering sequences (mechanical, electrical, civil, nuclear, systems, computer or environmental). Beginning with the first semester of the junior year, cadets begin to take electives for their chosen field of study. Fields of study require completion of nine additional courses, bringing to 40 the number of classes a cadet must pass in order to receive a degree. The selection of an optional major involves anywhere from one to four - usually three - additional courses above and beyond the nine field of study electives. This will allow the Cadet to expand his or her realm of study within a chosen discipline. Physical education and military science courses round out the challenging curriculum. Cadets are required to incorporate classes from both disciplines into each semester’s class schedule, creating a standard six-course load for each academic term.

ATHLETE OPPORTUNITIES CENTER FOR ENHANCED PERFORMANCE The Center for Enhanced Performance (CEP) is a state of the art facility committed to developing the full potential of each cadet through comprehensive mental toughness and academic skills training. It offers three programs designed to maximize West Point cadet performance, as well as export these critical mental skills to the United States Army at large. The Performance Enhancement Program (PEP) is the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most comprehensive training program for learning, practicing and mastering the intangible mental skills that underlie human performance; confidence despite setbacks, concentration amidst distractions, and composure under stress. Cadets participate in individual training sessions during free periods in their academic schedule, learning, and then applying the skills of imagery, attention control, energy management, and goal setting. Biofeedback training allows cadets to learn crucial self-regulation techniques, and sophisticated audio and video simulations of game and practice situations are used to facilitate mental rehearsal of specific physical, academic, or military skills. These training methods are derived from the field of applied sport psychology, where they are employed in the training of professional and Olympic athletes, but apply to every other area of human performance. The Academic Excellence Program provides instruction in academic support skills designed to help cadets succeed in the classroom. Three classes are offered throughout the academic year: 1) the Student Success Course, a 20 lesson course combining the study skills of textbook marking, note taking, test preparation and time management, with the mental skills such as attention control, confidence building, stress and energy management; 2) Reading Efficiency, a 10 lesson course designed to improve reading speed and comprehension through drill and utilization of modern computer technologies; and 3) Information Literacy and Critical Thinking, a 20-lesson course taught jointly with the USMA Library staff created to enhance problem-solving skills and critically read and evaluate research. The CEP Tutor Program organizes final exam preparation sessions at the end of each semester, and cadet tutors for nearly every academic course are available throughout the year. Most recently the CEP created the Military Enhancement Program (MEP), designed to apply the skills and techniques taught by the Performance Enhancement Program within a military context. MEP Training is now nested throughout the 47 months of the West Point experience. These programs are unique aids to the every member of the Corps of Cadets who seeks to achieve their full potential in academics, athletics and military training. The Center for Enhanced Performance is a powerful demonstration of the Academyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commitment to provide the finest training available to the future leaders of the nation.

WORLD CLASS ATHLETE PROGRAM While the Center for Enhanced Performance helps West Point student-athletes succeed in the classroom, the World Class Athlete Program provides outstanding soldierathletes the support and training to compete and succeed in national and international competitions to include the Olympic Games, while maintaining a professional military career and promoting the U.S. Army to the world. WCAP offers all graduates of West Point the same opportunity for selection. All soldiers must be in good military standing. All West Point graduates must have completed their branch Officer Basic Course. Soldiers applying for the program must demonstrate the ability to maintain a high national ranking in their specific sport. If selected to be a WCAP member after graduating from West Point, your Army objective will be to train to make the Olympic Team. Qualifiers of the World Class Athlete Program receive exceptional training from some of the finest coaches and trainers in the country. A total of 95 soldiers were assigned to WCAP to train for the 2000 Olympic Games and 2002 Winter Olympics. Of the 77 training for the Summer Games, 53 qualified for the Olympic Trials. Three athletes made the Olympic team, while four more were named alternates. Sixteen of the 18 athletes training for the 2002 Winter Olympics qualified for the Olympic Trials. Nine of those people advanced to the Olympic Games, while two qualified as alternates. WCAP athletes earned three medals, one gold and two bronze.

Since 1948, over 400 Army soldier-athletes have been selected to either an American summer or winter Olympic team, earning 102 medals overall. Recent WCAP accomplishments include: 2004 Fifteen WCAP members qualified for the Olympic Trials. Dremial Byers, Tina George and Faruk Sahin all won individual titles at the U.S. Open, while Oscar Wood qualified for the Athens Olympic Games. 2002 Glenn Nieradka, Keith Sieracki, Dremiel Byers and Iris Smith won their respective weight classes to lead the All-Army wrestling team to its second consecutive Greco-Roman crown at the U.S. National Wrestling Championships. 2000 Six freestyle and 11 Greco Roman WCAP wrestlers qualified for finals of Olympic Trials. 1999 WCAP athletes won 156 medals in national and international championships. 1998 At the Winter Olympic Games, nine soldiers made the U.S. Olympic team. 1996 60 soldiers qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials, 15 made the U.S. Olympic team.

CRANDALL POOL/ARMY DIVING Thanks to some renovations over the years, Army’s Crandall Pool is still considered one of the top venues on the East Coast. Since its completion in 1970, the pool has been the site of state, regional and national events, most notably the 1972 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships and the 1971 National AAU Indoor Diving Championships. Also among the best is the diving facility, which includes two one-meter and two three-meter springboards, as well as 6.5 and 10-meter platforms. They are located in a separate diving area, permitting simultaneous swimming and diving training. The diving facilities also include a dry board and a trampoline for dryland dive training. The electronic timing system can also calculate divers’ scores based on the judges’ scores and degree of difficulty. In 1995-96, the facility received a $10-million facelift. Included in the modifications were new men’s and women’s locker rooms, renovated storage and office areas, and a new heating and filtration system in the pool. The 1972 Men’s and 1976 Women’s Olympic teams selected West Point as the official training site before departing for Munich and Montreal, respectively. Army has served as host for both the Eastern Seaboard Swimming and Diving Championships and the Patriot League Championships. Most recently, the 2000 Patriot League Championships and the 2001 EISL Championships were held at West Point. Crandall Pool has also played host to other special events. Of recent note was the German National Swimming Team’s visit to West Point for training prior to the 1998 Goodwill Games on Long Island, N.Y. Crandall Pool was named in memory of Robert W. Crandall, USMA ’39, the captain of the 1938-39 Army swimming team who was killed in battle in Italy in World War II. Suitable for long- and short-course training, the pool is a six-lane, 50-meter course which can be divided by a submergible bulkhead into an eight-lane, 25-yard competition pool and a six-lane practice pool. The overall depth is not less than eight-feet, making for a very fast pool. The facility has a seating capacity of 1,210 and has an excellent view of the finish and scoreboard. There is also a fully electronic timing and judging system.

Army Diving

Army Diving strives to have each cadet-athlete fulfill his or her potential and reach the pinnacle of the Division I level through rigorous training and the utilization of a top-notch facility at Crandall Pool. Divers at USMA make use of two one- and three-meter springboards, a 6.5-meter platform, a 10-meter platform, dryboard, trampoline, spotting belts and TiVo. The daily schedule of an Army diver is a productive one, with six days of training each week. Nonetheless, the demands of the classroom at West Point are still met and surpassed by everyone who is a part of the program. Army Diving trains everyday during the week as well as Saturday, with Sundays off. During the course of the whole year, the Army diving team will use all the tools in its possession in order to peak for Navy and for Patriots. As with all cadets at West Point, the diving team works hard each and every day and strives to meet every challenge they face, both on the boards and in the classroom. Army divers are an indispensable part of the Army swimming and diving program. Interaction and reliance on the swimmers as teammates is an important part of the life of any Army diver. Together, swimmers and divers share the same daily challenges, make the same sacrifices, and have the same ultimate goal – win championships and BEAT NAVY!

LT. GEN. FRANKLIN L. HAGENBECK SUPERINTENDENT Lt. Gen. Franklin L. Hagenbeck assumed duties as the 57th Superintendent of the United States Military Academy in June 2006. Hagenbeck was commissioned from West Point in 1971. He earned a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology and served as an assistant football coach at Florida State University. While assigned to the Academy’s Department of Physical Education, he earned a Master of Business Administration from Long Island University. His military education includes the Army War College, Army Command and General Staff College and the Infantry Officer Advanced Course. Hagenbeck has commanded at every level from company through division, culminating as Commanding General of the 10th Mountain Division. He has also served in the 25th Infantry Division, 10th Mountain Division, 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions and The U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. Among his other assignments, Hagenbeck served as the Army’s Deputy Chief of Staff, G-1, and in numerous staff positions. His Joint assignments include: Exchange Officer and Tactics Instructor to the Royal Australian Infantry Center; Deputy Director for Politico-Military Affairs for Global and Multi-Lateral Issues and Western Hemisphere; Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate (J5); and Deputy Director for Current Operations, J33, Joint Staff. He served as Commander, Coalition Joint Task Force Mountain, Operations Enduring Freedom/Anaconda and Deputy Commanding General, Combined Joint Task Force 180 in Afghanistan. Hagenbeck’s decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal; Defense Superior Service Medal (oak leaf cluster); Legion of Merit (four oak leaf clusters); Bronze Star (oak leaf cluster); Meritorious Service Medal (two oak leaf clusters); Army Commendation Medal (oak leaf cluster); Army Achievement Medal; Air Assault Badge; Master Parachutist Badge; Expert Infantryman Badge; Australian, British, and Honduran Airborne Wings; Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge and Army Staff Identification Badge.

BRIG. GEN. WILLIAM E. RAPP COMMANDANT OF CADETS Brig. General William E. Rapp took command of the United States Corps of Cadets as West Point’s 72nd Commandant of Cadets in October 2009. Rapp was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers from the U.S. Military Academy in 1984. His civilian education includes a Masters of Arts in Political Science and a PhD in International Relations from Stanford University. His military education includes the Engineer Officer Basic Course, Infantry Officer Advanced Course, US Army Command and General Staff College, the Army War College where he earned a Masters of Arts in National Security Policy, and the Joint Forces Staff College. He was the distinguished honor graduate of his Infantry Officer Advance Course, Ranger School class, Jumpmaster class, and the Strategist Program at CGSC. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Virginia. Rapp’s early assignments included duties as a Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, Assistant S3, and the Corps Operations Officer in Germany and at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He commanded an airborne engineer company during Operation Desert Storm. Following grad school, he served as an instructor and assistant professor in the Department of Social Sciences at USMA and as an Engineer Battalion S3 and Group S3 at Fort Lewis, Wash. He also served as the Military Assistant to the Secretary of the Army (Civil Works) before commanding the 54th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Mech) in Bamberg, Germany. Following command, Rapp was selected for the Council of Foreign Relations Fellowship at the Institute for International Policy Studies in Tokyo, Japan. He returned to the States in the summer of 2003 to attend the Army War College before proceeding to Fort Lewis to serve as the Chief of Plans (G3) for I Corps Headquarters. In June 2005, he assumed command of 555th Combat Engineer Group and deployed in support of the 101st Airborne Division for Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2007, Rapp completed his command and returned to Iraq as the Director of the Commander’s Initiatives Group serving under GEN Petraeus in Multi-National Forces-Iraq. In his most recent assignment, Rapp served as the Commanding General of the Northwestern Division of the Corps of Engineers in Portland, Oregon. Rapp’s awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters, and the Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He has earned the Combat Action Badge, Master Parachutist wings, Air Assault wings, Ranger Tab, and the Engineer Regiment’s Bronze DeFleury Medal. Rapp is married to the former Debbie Biggi of Sacramento, California. They have three children: Anna Marie, David and Robby.

BRIG. GEN. PATRICK FINNEGAN DEAN OF THE ACADEMIC BOARD In the summer of 2005, Brig. Gen. Patrick Finnegan was named Dean of the Academic Board at the United States Military Academy. Upon graduation from West Point in 1971, he was commissioned a second lieutenant, attended the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and earned a Master of Public Administration degree in 1973. As a cadet, he served as Chairman of the Honor Committee and head manager of the Army football team. Finnegan received his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia Law School in 1979. While attending law school, he was a member and editor of the Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Finnegan has served JAG Corps tours at Bad Kreuznach, Germany (1979-82); the Judge Advocate General’s School, Charlottesville, Va. (198387); Fort Bragg, N.C. (1988-93); MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. (1994-96); and Stuttgart, Germany (1996-98). He served as USMA Staff Judge Advocate from August 1998 until he was appointed as Professor and Head of the Department of Law in July 1999. Prior to his appointment as Dean, Finnegan also served as head officer representative for the Army football team. During his time at Fort Bragg, Finnegan was deployed to the Persian Gulf to participate in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Finnegan’s awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal (oak leaf cluster), Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (two oak leaf clusters), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (two oak leaf clusters), Humanitarian Service Medal, Saudi Arabia/Kuwait Liberation Medal and Defense Meritorious Unit Award (oak leaf cluster). A member of the Virginia Bar and the Phi Kappa Phi Academic Honor Society, Finnegan has also been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. Finnegan and his wife, Joan, have two daughters: Katie Finnegan Rucker and Jenna Finnegan Bechen; and four grandchildren.

Since Kevin Anderson was introduced as Army’s Director of Athletics on Dec. 13, 2004, West Point’s intercollegiate athletic program has enjoyed immense success both on and off the “fields of friendly strife.” Boasting more than two decades of leadership and experience, Anderson departed his post as executive associate athletic director at Oregon State University to accept the challenge of re-invigorating Army’s proud athletic program. The veteran administrator has played a large role in accomplishing that goal during his five years along the banks of the Hudson. In that time, Army has sent 19 intercollegiate athletic teams to the NCAAs, captured its first National Championship in more than 50 years, witnessed the revitalization of its hockey and men’s basketball programs, and experienced unparalleled success in several others, such as baseball, women’s volleyball, women’s tennis and women’s basketball. A year ago, Army’s women’s soccer team became West Point’s ninth different intercollegiate program to advance to the NCAAs under Anderson’s watch, while the baseball team reached a regional final for the first time in school history. During the 2004-05 academic year, Anderson’s first at West Point, Army’s athletic program won a National Championship in rifle, sent a record seven teams to postseason appearances, defeated Navy in the yearlong series for the first time since 1978 and forged an overall winning percentage of .582. It marked Army’s finest overall performance in more than a decade. Seventeen of Army’s 25 intercollegiate teams carved records of .500 or better that year as the Black Knights put forth their highest year-long winning percentage since a .604 effort in 1993-94. In addition, Army reclaimed the Patriot League’s Presidents’ Cup—signifying the league’s all-sports champion—for the first time since 1997. Army sent its rifle, gymnastics, baseball, lacrosse, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and golf squads to postseason play, surpassing the previous standard of six teams in NCAA action. Six of Army’s eight spring teams won Patriot League titles that year. Army’s success opposite Navy snapped a 27-year drought in the all-sports rivalry, giving the Black Knights their first series win over Navy since going 9-8-1 (.528) in 1977-78. While Michael Phelps and the rest of the world were making swimming history in Beijing at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, Army head coach Mickey Wender was there making his own mark. Appointed head coach of the American Samoa swimming contingent for the games, he and rising Black Knight junior Stewart Glenister, who’s parents are native to the small island in the South Pacific, made the trip to the Far East to compete against the best athletes in the world on the grandest stage the sport has to offer.

In his first season with the Black Knights, Wender was named Patriot League Coach of the Year after leading the men’s program to second place at the conference championship meet with the team’s highest point total since Army won the meet in 2001. He also guided the women to a fourth-place outcome as 11 total members of the two teams earned All-Patriot League recognition. Wender then directed the men’s team to a second-place finish at the USA Swimming Championships while two of his swimmers – Zach Disbrow ’07 and Jake Mentele ’08 – registered qualifying times for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. Twenty-one members of the team either earned a spot or moved up on Army’s all-time top-10 performance list, with nearly 95 percent of the roster achieving personal bests in their primary events. Mentele followed in Disbrow’s footsteps in 2008, bringing home Male Swimmer of the Meet honors at the Patriot League Championships after winning individual titles in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes as well as the 200 IM.

Under Wender’s watchful eye, Glenister swam to first place in his heat of the 50-meter freestyle, while setting an American Samoan national record in the process. Wender was also able to soak up as much of the Olympic experience as he could to bring back to the West Point pool deck at Crandall Pool.

“I was so proud of what both teams accomplished in my first two seasons,” stated Wender. “We grew a lot since first meeting after I took over, as individuals, as a team and as a coaching staff. I’m really pleased with the foundation that group laid for the Army swimming program and what we plan to achieve in the future.”

The ninth head coach in the 87-year history of the men’s program and the sixth women’s coach in the program’s 30-year history, Wender enters his fourth year at West Point after eight seasons at the head of the swimming & diving program at the University of Washington where he authored an impressive dual-meet record of 154-58.

The Setauket, N.Y., native restored the Washington program to national prominence during his tenure with the Huskies while competing in the Pacific-10 conference. His women’s program appeared in the national rankings in 2003 and 2005, and the men’s squad earned national recognition from 2000 to 2005.

During the 2003-04 campaign, his men’s team finished 25th at nationals on the strength of five NCAA qualifiers, including Phil Davis, a Pac-10 Champion and conference record-holder in the 200 breaststroke. It was the men’s team’s highest finish at the NCAA Championships in more than 30 years. The women’s team sent four swimmers to the 2003 NCAA Championships and placed 19th for the highest national finish since swimming became an NCAA sponsored sport in 1982. Kim Harada, who coached with Wender for three years at Washington and two years at Army, recorded two fourth-place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle events to earn All-America honors. She also earned honorable mention honors in the 200 freestyle relay along with teammates Annette Vayo, Melody Staubitz and Sharon Olson. Wender’s swimmers not only achieved success in the pool, but were just as impressive in the classroom. Ten Huskies were named to the Pac-10 All-Academic squad during the 2001-02 season, including David Moilanen who was a first team Academic All-American, a Rhodes Scholar finalist and the school record holder in the 100 backstroke. Wender’s swimmers were honored with postseason awards at the conference and national level for four consecutive years. Five men and seven women were named to the Pac-10 AllAcademic team in 2005. I’m excited to put all of the knowledge and experience that I’ve gained into action at West Point.” Before joining the Huskies’ program in 1998, Wender led the University of California-Santa Cruz swimming and diving squad to four Top-10 national finishes in six years (1992-98), compiling a 54-6 divisional dual-meet record. After four years, he boosted the Banana Slugs from being unranked to finishing sixth in the Women’s NCAA Division III Championships and ninth in the men’s division. Wender also coached the 1996 NCAA Division III 200 individual medley champion and guided his athletes to more than 60 All-America perfor-

mances while at UC-Santa Cruz. Furthermore, 90 percent of his athletes graduated in four years. He also served as the aquatics manager and a physical education instructor. Prior to his appointment at UC-Santa Cruz, Wender served as head assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Cal StateNorthridge for two seasons from 1990-92. During that time, he aided Pete Accardy, NCAA Division II “Coach of the Decade,” as he transitioned the program to Division-I status. Wender was an assistant coach for the USA National Team that competed in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1997. He also has been active coaching and implementing programs at the high school and master’s levels, as well as in public relations and public speaking. In addition, he was the founder of the NIKE Swim Camps at UC-Santa Cruz, as well as the San Diego Triathlon Camp. He has also produced a best-selling instructional swim video series and is the founder of Team Starbucks Aquatics, a highly-successful club program. Wender has been a leader in the sport politically, serving in leadership positions of several national and local organizations. He served as the president of the Greater Seattle Swim Coaches Association, and he currently sits on the board of the College Swim Coaches Association of America.

A four-year letterwinner at the University of Vermont, Wender served as team captain and won a state championship while swimming for the Catamounts from 1985 to 1989. He graduated from Vermont in 1989, boasting the school’s highest grade-point average in the physical education program. He went on to earn his master’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis on sport psychology in 1992 from Cal State-Northridge, and was honored again as the top-ranked student in the school’s Kinesiology Department. Wender’s passion, in addition to coaching, is competing in endurance races. The innovative and energetic coach has completed two Ironman Triathlons, and, along with four teammates, placed ninth in the 1996 Eco Challenge, widely known as one of the world’s toughest athletic events. Wender also added to his list of accomplishments an ascent to the peak of Washington’s Mt. Rainier in 1999. Wender and his wife, Kate, have been married for 12 years. They have four children, Samantha Jane (8) and twin boys, Jack and Luke (5) and Grace (2). The family resides at West Point, N.Y.

ASSISTANT COACHING STAFF In three seasons with the Black Knights, his divers have broken three of the four Academy diving records. In 2008, Greg Sievers ‘08 smashed both the 1-meter and 3-meter marks, while current senior Lindsey Adao put together a record setting performance on 1-meter board. Prior to West Point, Kontura served as the diving coach at the University of California-Berkley and saw several divers set numerous school records during his tenure. In 2005, the divers were a key reason the squad finished atop the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Dual Meet polls. That same year, he also led a group of the nation’s top young divers to a team championship at the Junior PanAmerican Games in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. During the summer of 2008, he led Team USA to a tie for third place at the FINA Junior World Championships in Aachen, Germany. Before his tenure at Berkley, Kontura coached the Mission Viejo Nadadores Diving Club, leading the 2003 team to the West Junior National Title.

RON KONTURA

DIVING COACH - 4TH SEASON OHIO UNIVERSITY ‘91 With over 16 years of competitive diving coaching experience, Ron Kontura, Jr. begins his fourth year as diving coach at West Point “I am proud and honored to be able to serve as the diving coach at the United Sates Military Academy,” said Kontura. “I am looking forward to the upcoming season, and I’m thrilled to be a part of the program’s future.”

From 1996-2000, Kontura coached at Illinois State University where he helped produce the first Academic All-American in program history while his divers broke every school record. He also coached and directed the Redbird Diving Club, which developed numerous Junior Olympic qualifiers and one Olympic Trials participant. Kontura’s coaching abilities were molded by his mentors Dick Kimball and Hobie Billingsley, both legendary Olympic coaches. As an assistant coach at Michigan, Kontura worked with Kimball to produce two AllAmerican divers and also helped the women’s program to the 1996 Big Ten Championship and a third-place showing at the NCAA Championships. He had the opportunity to train alongside Billingsley leading up to the 1996 Olympics, and saw one of his teammates, Mark Lenzi, go on to win a spring board Gold

Medal in 1992 and a Bronze in 1996. Kontura began his collegiate coaching career at Allegheny College from 1994-1995 where he developed four NCAA Division III All-Americans. “I am excited to have Ron on our staff,” stated Army swimming and diving head coach Mickey Wender. “He brings a wealth of experience to our team both in and out of the pool, and is a great fit for the Academy and for my coaching philosophies.” A 1996 USA Diving National Team member, Kontura medaled four times at USA Diving Nationals. Still active in the sport, Kontura has been a U.S. Masters National Champion since 1994 and recently won a gold and two silver medals at the 2006 FINA World Masters Diving Championships. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Kontura was a four-year letterman at Ohio University, while working toward a degree in business administration in 1991. He also earned his MBA from Illinois State University in 1999. Kontura currently resides in Cornwall, N.Y. with his wife Erin and newborn son, Kyler. he coached novice and high school level swimmers, along with elite level competitors. He also was the head coach for the Special Olympics squad in his home town for three years, helping prepare swimmers for their annual competition, including one individual who qualified for the World Championships.

Last season, Lundgaard was an assistant coach for the Boulder City (Nev.) High School where he helped lead the squad to the 4A Regional Championship and a fourth-place finish at the state championships. Lundgaard also worked as a psychosocial rehabilitative skills specialist, working with children with social, cognitive and emotional disorders.

Primarily a backstroke and butterfly specialist, she attended California following a high school career that included being crowned Arizona State Champion in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke in 2002, as well as numerous school records at Red Mountain High School in Mesa, Ariz.

A 2008 University of Washington graduate, Lundgaard was a member of the Huskie swimming & diving squad under current Army head coach Mickey Wender during his tenure in Seattle. A Las Vegas native, Lundgaard was an assistant coach for the Desert Storm Swim Team for the last five years where

Voted team captain for his junior and senior campaigns, the butterfly and individual medley specialist was a four-time Pac-10 All-Academic honoree and also qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 butterfly. A member of the school-record setting 200 free relay, he also finished his collegiate career ranked in the top three of the 100 and 200 butterfly lists as well as the 200 IM. He was voted “Most Inspirational” by his Huskie teammates on three occasions during his stay in Seattle.

ABOUT THE PATRIOT LEAGUE In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 76 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2008-09 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following: *15 student-athletes earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, including First-Team selections for: Army’s Elizabeth Betterbed, Sarah Goss, Briana Stremick Scott Rosenshein and Kevin Kumlien; Navy’s Lizzie Barnes and Kelly Zahalka; and Colgate’s Daniel Kerley. *61 student-athletes were recognized as ESPN The Magazine/ CoSIDA Academic All-District recipients, with 45 on the First Team. *Bucknell won its 15th overall and women’s Patriot League Presidents’ Cup trophy, while Army won the men’s trophy for the first time since 2005. *Holy Cross men’s soccer senior Jerry Dickinson was awarded a Fulbright Grant to work and study in South Africa. *Navy’s Kelly Zahalka earned her third Academic All-America selection from CoSIDA, and was also named to the USA Today First-Team All-Academic squad. She also earned both a Truman and Marshall Scholarship. *Navy’s Lizzie Barnes was one of 58 student-athletes nationally to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was also a First-Team All-Senior All-America selection. *Army became the first Patriot League team to advance to the finals of the NCAA Baseball Regional, and also the first to win two regional games by beating Texas State and Boston College. *Lehigh advanced to the finals of the NCAA Softball Regional, knocking off Florida A & M and Texas A & M in elimination games before falling to top-seed Florida. *Army’s Ben Koenigsfeld became the first baseball studentathlete to earn a pair of First-Team All-League honors in the same season, and also the first to win both the Pitcher of

the Year and Tournament Most Valuable Player award in the same year. *Colgate’s Nick Hennessey and Steve Jonas and Holy Cross’ Brett McDermott all signed NFL free agent contracts. *Hennessey became the first Patriot Leaguer since 2004 to earn consensus FCS All-America honors with his selection by each of the four major organizations. *The Lehigh women’s basketball team was one of 14 NCAA Tournament participants to record a perfect graduation rate. *Colgate’s Jordan Scott finished his career as the all-time Division I leader in carries (1,240), and fifth in FCS history while breaking the Patriot League record in rushing yardage (5,621).

Evans was named a Mid-Major Freshman All-American. *Three Patriot League men’s basketball players were named NABC All-District selections, the most for the League since 1995. *The Patriot League finished 17th in the final women’s basketball RPI rating, the highest mark in League annals. LINDSEY ADAO Senior Jeff Tolbert was named the Class of 1923 Award winner that is presented to the graduating senior who has exhibited qualities of leadership and sportsmanship while showing outstanding ability. Also named the Captain Michael W. Kilroy Award winner recognizing the captain of the men’s team, Tolbert was one of the Black Knights’ top distance swimmers over the last four years. As a senior, he registered times in the 200, 500, 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle events that ranked in the top-three on the team, including the squad’s fastest time in the 1,000 (9:25.48) in a dual meet victory opposite Columbia. Junior diver Lindsey Adao and freshman Paige Brink were named co-recipients of the Rex Storch award recognizing the most valuable member of the women’s team. Adao took home the honor for the second-straight season after being crowned Patriot League Champion on both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events at the conference championships and garnering Patriot League Female Diver of the Year honors. Brink was named the Patriot League Female Rookie of the Year after a season that included five plebe records and two Academyrecord setting swims in a runner-up showing in the 200 butterfly and third-place showing in the100 butterfly. “Most Inspirational” award along with junior Gordon Cooper, Brink touched the wall sixth in the 200 IM and swam on four relays that placed for Army. Both Adao and Brink lauded first-team All-Patriot League accolades. Senior Sally White was named the recipient of the Lt. Gen. John Daley Award honoring the captain of the women’s team. White walked on to to the team as a junior catching the eye of Coach Wender at the Brigade All-Star Swim Meet and went on to distinguish herself for two seasons with the Black Knights. White was appointed the Brigade Deputy Commander (the second-highest rank in the USMA Corps of Cadets) for the 2008-09 academic year and was one of the top student-athletes in the Class of 2009. Sophomore Matt Leegan was honored with the Steve Childer’s Award, given to the sophomore or junior on the men’s team who shows the most improvement throughout the season. Leegan placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke at the Patriot League Championships and was also a member of the 200 free relay squad that finished fourth. Leegan also competed in the 200 breaststroke and the 50 freestyle during the meet, logging the team’s second-fastest 50 free time of the season in the prelims.

Freshmen Brody Blickle was dubbed the Dorothy “Skipper” Buncher Award as the top plebe on the men’s team that contributes most to the varsity program. Blickle was named a firstteam All-Patriot League performer after placing third in the 100 butterfly, sixth in the 200 IM and seventh in the 200 fly at the Patriot League Championships. He also swam on the third-place 400 and 200 medley relays as well as the 200 and 400 free relays that placed. Junior Amy Tang was recognized with the Most Improved Female award. Tang won the consolation final of the 100 butterfly and touched the wall fourth in the 200 butterfly consolation at the Patriot League Championships, swimming personal-best times in both events in the process. She additionally was a member of the scoring 200 and 400 medley relay squads. Sophomore Brendan Murphy was the recipient of a Coaches Award after a season highlighted by a fourth-place effort in the 50 freestyle and a fifth-place showing in the 100 freestyle at the Patriot League Championships. Logging personal-best performances in both events, he was the Black Knights’ fastest swimmer in both events during the season and also swam on the scoring 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays at the conference meet.

TURN BACK THE CLOCK: ARMY MEN FINISH SECOND AT 2007 USA SWIMMING SPRING CHAMPIONSHIPS March 31, 31 2007 EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Army men’s swimming and diving team’s success this spring has gone from the conference to national level following a second place finish at the USA Swimming Spring Championships East Meadow, N.Y. “We had tremendous performances all week,” commented Army head coach Mickey Wender. “I’m proud of what our guys did out here, they represented Army swimming and the Academy extremely well. Jake (Mentele) and Zach (Disbrow) had great swims as they both made Olympic Trial cuts. This was a great way to cap what has been a very rewarding first year for me personally.” The Black Knights had been in seventh place at the midpoint of the competition, but used a very solid final two days of swims to improve upon that placement and finish second in the men’s team division. Army was represented in four events over the final two days and notched Top- 8 finishes in three, including a second place finish in the 400-meter freestyle relay. The quartet of Zach Disbrow, Mike Soderberg, Jake Mentele and Efri Ruthenberg notched the best finish of the Spring Championships for Army with their runner-up placing in the event. The foursome touched the wall in 3 minutes, 31.42 seconds to help catapult the team up the leaderboard. Mentele and Disbrow also enjoyed individual success as both qualified for the Olympic Trials in their respective disciplines. Mentele followed up his sixth place finish and Olympic Trials cut in the 200 breaststroke by touching the wall seventh in the 100 breast in a time of 1:05.02. His time in the preliminaries of the event of 1:04.60 was below the Olympic Trials cut for the event, marking the first time he has made the cut in the 100 breast. Disbrow improved upon his 14th place finish in the 200 butterfly with a seventh place finish in the 100 fly clocking a time of 55.74. The team captain touched the wall in 55.50 in the preliminaries qualifying him for the Olympic Trials for the first time in his career. Disbrow also competed in the 50 free where he placed 37th with a time of 24.48. Ruthenberg joined him in the event finishing 42nd in 24.60.
