WEST POINT The United States Military Academy is renowned because of its historic and distinguished reputation as a military academy, and as a leading, progressive institution of higher education. Made legendary in books and movies produced over the years, the Academy’s “Long Gray Line” of graduates includes some of our nation’s most famous and influential men: Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, George S. Patton, Omar Bradley, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower and Norman Schwarzkopf. Because of this superb education and leadership experience, West Point graduates historically have been sought for high level civilian and military leadership positions. Their numbers include two U.S. presidents, several ambassadors, state governors, legislators, judges, cabinet members, educators, astronauts and corporate executives. Today, West Point continues to provide hundreds of young men and women the unique opportunity to develop physically, ethically and intellectually while building a foundation for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career as an Army officer in the service of our nation. Cadets have much more responsibility in running the Academy than students in most other colleges or universities. It adds to the leadership experience. Cadets succeed at West Point because of the support they receive from the staff and faculty. After all, many faculty members are West Point graduates and understand the challenge cadets face on a daily basis. They also serve as ideal role models, showing cadets what Army life is like. The U.S. Military Academy’s primary strength is its ability to develop leaders of character who are committed to “Duty, Honor, Country” and selfless service to our nation.

THE PREMIER LEADER DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTION IN THE NATION 3
2010-11 ARMY WOMEN’S TENNIS Peterson’s Guide ranks West Point as one of the most competitive colleges in the nation and Forbes ranked West Point as American’s best college in 2009. There are approximately 12,000 applications each year for less than 1,200 cadet vacancies. Applicants compete for vacancies and are evaluated in three areas: academics, physical aptitude and demonstrated leadership ability. Cadet vacancies are allocated to each member of Congress and to the representatives to Congress from Washington, D.C., Guam, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, American Samoa and the Mariana Islands. Many foreign governments are also invited to nominate cadets under a Department of State program, so the student population at West Point is incredibly diverse. The following is an overview of the first three steps toward gaining admittance to West Point. Further information regarding the admissions process and orientation visits is available by calling the Director of Admissions at (845) 938-4041. Should you wish to schedule an official visit, contact the Army Tennis office at (845) 938-6015. Determine if you meet entrance requirements.
DETERMINE IF YOU MEET ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS To meet West Point’s minimum entrance requirements, you must: be at least 17 but not yet 23 on the day you enter West Point; be a U.S. citizen at the time you enter (except for foreign cadets as noted above); not be married or pregnant, nor have a legal obligation to support a child or other dependent. Additionally, you must meet academic, medical and physical qualifications. To be considered academically qualified, you should have an aboveaverage high school or college academic record and strong performance on the standardized American College Testing (ACT) Assessment Program Exam or the College Board Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Additionally, you should take a strong college
preparatory program in high school, including four years of English, four years of math (including trigonometry), two years of laboratory science, two years of a foreign language and one year of U.S. history. To be medically qualified, you must be in good physical and mental health and pass a medical exam administered by the Department of Defense. To meet physical qualification standards, you must demonstrate above-average strength, endurance and agility. The West Point Field Force administers a Physical Aptitude Exam to measure these traits. The exam includes: pull-ups for men/ flexed arm hang for women, basketball throw from the kneeling position, standing long jump, a 300-yard shuttle run and a two-minute bout of push-ups.
APPLY FOR A NOMINATION A nomination is the legal authority for West Point to consider a candidate for admission. Nominations are available from every member of Congress and from the representatives to Congress listed above. At a minimum, you should apply to your two senators, your representative and the Vice President. Nominations are also available, from the President, for children of career military personnel, and from the Secretary of the Army for enlisted soldiers in the Regular Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard; for children of deceased or 100% disabled veterans; children of persons awarded the Medal of Honor; and students in Army ROTC, Army Junior ROTC, or Navy, Air Force, or Marine Junior ROTC units which have been designated as Honor Units with Distinction.

Long recognized as one of the premier academic institutions in the United States, the U.S. Military Academy provides a challenging curriculum that culminates in a bachelor of science degree upon graduation. More than 25 fields of study and 19 optional academic majors are available to cadets as West Point strives to educate and train the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate shall have the attributes essential to professional growth as an officer in the regular Army. The USMA curriculum is also geared toward providing West Point graduates with an intellectual foundation for increasing responsibility (as they ascend the ranks) through a balanced undergraduate education. The Academy’s highly competitive academic environment, coupled with its broad-based academic curriculum, has helped West Point rank fourth nationally in the number of both Rhodes Scholars and Hertz Scholars that it has produced. The West Point curriculum is divided into three portions - core courses, an engineering sequence and a field of study. Cadets are required to take 26 core courses plus five additional classes in one of seven engineering sequences (mechanical, electrical, civil, nuclear, systems, computer or environmental). Beginning with the first semester of the junior year, cadets begin to take electives for their chosen field of study. Fields of study require completion of nine additional courses, bringing to 40 the number of classes a cadet must pass in order to receive a degree. The selection of an optional major involves anywhere from one to four - usually three - additional courses above and beyond the nine field of study electives. This will allow the Cadet to expand his or her realm of study within a chosen discipline. Physical education and military science courses round out the challenging curriculum. Cadets are required to incorporate classes from both disciplines into each semester’s class schedule, creating a standard six-course load for each academic term.

The Academy’s ninth Superintendent (1852-55), Lee was a model cadet during his four years at West Point. He graduated second in his class and never earned a single demerit during his four years at the Academy. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was selected to serve as Commanding General of the Army, but instead resigned his commission and was named General-In-Chief of the Confederate Army from 1861 to 1865. Lee’s surrender to Ulysses S. Grant (USMA 1843), at Appomattox Court House, Va., ended the Civil War. Fort Lee, Va., was named in his honor.
After World War I, MacArthur returned to West Point to serve as the Academy’s 31st Superintendent from 1919 to 1922. During that time, he was responsible for the revitalization of the Academy. He was later promoted to General of the Army and served as Supreme Allied Commander in the Pacific Theater during World War II. During that time, he received the Medal of Honor for leading defense preparation and operations on the Philippine Islands. He later served as Supreme Allied Commander, Japan, and as commander, United Nations Command in the Far East. He was one of only five officers to be promoted to General of the Army (five stars).
During World War II, Eisenhower served as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces Europe from 1943 to 1944, during which he led the D-Day invasion of Europe. During that time, he was promoted to General of the Army (five stars). After the war, he served as Army Chief of Staff from 1945 to 1948 and was named President of Columbia University in 1948. He served as the 34th President of the United States from 1953 to 1961 and was one of only five officers to be promoted to General of the Army (five stars).
As Commander-in-Chief, United States Central Command from 1988 to 1991, Schwarzkopf’s command ultimately responded to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait with the largest U.S. deployment since the Vietnam War, including portions of the Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps as well as units from dozens of nations around the world. After retiring, Schwartzkopf received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
ULYSSES S. GRANT ’43 Grant distinguished himself during the Civil War at the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863; his victory secured control of the Mississippi River for the Union. President Abe Lincoln later appointed him Commanding General of the Army in March 1864. On April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House, Va., Robert E. Lee (USMA 1829) surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to him, ending the Civil War. Grant later served as the 18th President of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Today, his image graces the $50 bill.
GEORGE W. GOETHALS ’80 Goethals became an architect and was builder of the Panama Canal, 1904 TO 1914.
JOHN J. PERSHING ’86 Considered the second most senior officer in Army history, behind only George Washington, Pershing served as commander of the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. The two-million-plus troops of the AEF made a decisive contribution to the defeat of Imperial Germany. Pershing’s abilities as a leader distinguished him among European commanders, and through repeated successes on the battlefield, promoted American prestige around the world. He served as Army Chief of Staff in 1921, and was named General of the Armies of the United States upon his retirement in 1924.
GEORGE S. PATTON JR. ’09 “Old Blood and Guts,” Patton was one of the most colorful commanders in the Army. During World War II the famed commander of the 2nd Armored Division and later the Third Army displayed courage and daring as prominently as the pair of ivory handled revolvers he wore. Patton accomplished one of the most remarkable feats in military history in December 1944, when he quickly turned the Third Army northward to reinforce the Allied southern flank against the German attack in the Battle of the Bulge. The General’s doctrine of aggressive employment of massive armor forces continue to prove themselves in combat arenas around the world.
OMAR N. BRADLEY ’15 During his career, Bradley earned a reputation as one of the best infantry commanders in World War II. He commanded the 82nd Airborne and 28th Infantry Divisions before going on to command the 1st Army and the 12th Army Group. After the war he served as Army Chief of Staff from 1948 to 1949 and served as the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1949 to 1953. He was the last Army officer to be promoted to General of the Army (five stars), and the Bradley fighting vehicle is named in his honor.
ALEXANDER M. HAIG JR. ’47 Haig served as Chief of Staff to President Richard Nixon from 1973 to 1974; Supreme Allied Commander in Europe 1974 to 1979; President of United Technologies Corporation 1980 to 1981 and Secretary of State during the Reagan administration from 1981 to 1982.
FRANK BORMAN ’50 An astronaut from 1962 to 1970, Borman commanded the first circumlunar flight of the earth. He later served as President of Eastern Airlines.
FIDEL V. RAMOS ’50 One of the Academy’s international cadets, Ramos served as a Philippine Army officer after graduation. He eventually became the country’s military Chief of Staff and later Secretary of National Defense. He also served as President of the Republic of the Philippines from 1992 to 1998.
EDWIN E. ALDRIN ’51 An astronaut from 1963 to 1972, Aldrin participated in the first manned lunar landing with Michael Collins (USMA ’52) and was the second man to walk on the moon.
EDWARD WHITE ’52 An astronaut from 1962 to 1967, White was the first man to walk in space and was one of the three astronauts killed in the Apollo I disaster in 1967.
PETER M. DAWKINS ’59 Dawkins was Cadet Brigade Commander (First Captain of the U.S. Corps of Cadets) as a senior and became the third Heisman Trophy winner in Army football history. He later served as chairman and CEO of Primerica.
JAMES V. KIMSEY ’62 Kimsey was the founding chairman of America Online, and was named chairman emeritus in 1996. He founded the Kimsey Foundation in 1996.
MICHAEL W. KRZYZEWSKI ’69 Krzyzewski served as head basketball coach at West Point from 1974 to 1979 before assuming similar duties at Duke University. Krzyzewski has led the Blue Devils to three national championships and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in October 2001. He coached the U.S. at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
RAYMOND T. ODIERNO ‘76 Odierno commanded the 4th Infantry Division during the fall of 2003 which, along with Special Forces units, captured Saddam Hussein in December of that year. Odierno helped plan and coordinate the raid that netted Iraq’s fallen dictator.
ROBERT S. KIMBROUGH ’89 Kimbrough was named one of 11 new astronaut candidates by NASA in May 2004. Kimbrough ranks among Army Baseball’s career leaders in saves. A veteran of Desert Storm, he currently works for NASA in Houston as a flight simulation engineer and participated in a space shuttle mission last fall.

2010-11 ARMY WOMEN’S TENNIS STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITIES Housing both the men’s and women’s tennis teams, Lichtenberg Tennis Center continues to make a large impact on both programs as the home of Army Tennis. The seven-court arena, which was completed in time for Army’s 1999 winter/spring season, features a sophisticated synthetic indoor hardcourt surface, state-of-theart lighting, locker facilities, coaches’ offices and meeting rooms, and an elevated spectator area that gives Army tennis fans a birds-eye view of all seven courts. Through the generosity of Herb (USMA ’55) and Alan (USMA ’51) Lichtenberg and the Class of 1955, Army’s men’s and women’s tennis teams boast one of the finest indoor tennis facilities in the nation. “I think it gives us a big psychological advantage over our opponents,” said Army women’s tennis coach Paul Peck. “When opposing teams walk in they know they are standing in the best college tennis facility that they have ever been in. The building is just unbelievable. It shows our athletes and our recruits that the Academy is serious about a quality tennis program.” In the fall of 2004, a brand new, state-of-the-art scoreboard was installed in the Lichtenberg Tennis Center, which allows fans to follow the action on all seven courts simultaneously. The scoreboard, which measures 26” wide by 13” high with “Army Tennis” and an Army logo printed on it, includes changeable team name, message centers, and a 32’ by 80’ LED matrix display for messages and graphics. The center, constructed by Indoor Courts of America, of Olathe, Kan., earned its first prestigious award in June 1999, when the United States Tennis Association (USTA) cited it as “one of the outstanding public tennis facilities for 1999.” Other recipients of the USTA Facility Award were Harvard, Texas A&M, Penn State, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Whitman College and Florida. The addition of the award-winning Lichtenberg Center has made tennis a yearround sport at West Point, rendering the Northeast’s typically unpredictable spring weather a non-factor. In the past, Army teams were forced to travel as far as 15 miles to play in an indoor facility that was not only costly, but contained an insufficient number of courts. That is the case no longer. The Army men’s team opened its home slate on Feb. 5, 2000, with the women’s squad debuting a week later. The Army tennis teams home in Lichtenberg is complete with visiting and team locker rooms, team meeting rooms and coaches offices. In the spring of 2002, the Black Knights welcomed their latest addition, the Malek Tennis Center. Featuring enhancements to the former Clinton Courts, this new outdoor facility boasts a new spectator seating area and a pedestrian plaza adjoining the tennis and baseball stadiums. Thanks in large part to these two top-notch facilities, the Army women’s tennis squad looks to continue its dominance in the Northeast. The nine courts, which are named after the project’s lead donor, Frederick V. Malek (USMA ’59), are located directly parallel to Clinton Field and adjacent to Doubleday Field. Both the Lichtenberg Tennis Center and Malek Courts have also served as the backdrop for the ITA Eastern Championships for the past several fall seasons.

2010-11 ARMY WOMEN’S TENNIS SEASON OUTLOOK
Back (L to R): Erin Colton, Annie Hang, Jessica Ahn, Robie Verano, Annie Houghton, Margaret Iliev, Morgen Kiser, Audrey Hansen. Front (L to R): Lt. Col. Steve Fleming, Emily Stein, Carley Riney, Jurelle Mendoza, Holly Pappafotis, Jamila Paul, Larraine Saavedra, Della Taylor, Patricia Vollmer, Head Coach Paul Peck. Missing from photo: Kari Pope, 2nd Lt. Pagie Ford. Army women’s tennis has become synonymous with excellence and the 2010-11 campaign is expected to be no exception. Head coach Paul Peck returns a plethora of talent from a year ago, including three All-Patriot League performers, and added five rookies to the mix as the Black Knights begin 201011 in search of a seventh-straight Patriot League title and accompanying trip to the NCAA Tournament. Highlighting one of the strongest classes to pass through the program in recent memory is senior Annie Houghton, who returns for her final season the banks of the Hudson. Houghton is a three-time AllPatriot League player, former Player and Rookie of the Year and became Army’s first player to be regionally ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) last spring. The Sewickley, Pa., native is expected to resume her role atop Army’s starting lineup. She enters her final season sitting on 74 career wins, leaving her 15 shy of breaking the Black Knights’ career record (88). Houghton has registered at least 20 wins in all three seasons up until now. Peck, an 11-time Patriot League Coach of the Year, also welcomes back his No. 2 singles player in sophomore Erin Colton. The 2009 Patriot League Rookie of the Year posted a 10-12 singes record a year ago and went 17-7 in doubles play. Joining Houghton and Colton among the team’s returning Patriot League all-stars is senior Jessica Ahn, who posted a 14-13 singles mark a year ago. Ahn battled through nagging injury throughout her junior campaign, but still managed to post four Patriot League wins in the spring. This year’s senior class has posted an 80-27 overall record, including a perfect 15-0 in regular season Patriot League matches, during its four years at the Academy, along with capturing three Patriot League titles. The group would like nothing more than to attain that status once again in 2010-11. Houghton will serve as a tri-captain, along with fellow seniors Audrey Hansen and Jurelle Mendoza. This marks the first time in program history that three players will all share the role as captain. Mendoza is coming off arguably her finest
10
season yet after closing out 2010 with a 19-6 overall mark. The lefty played No. 5 singles in the 2010 Patriot League Tournament and clinched the thrilling 4-3 victory for the Black Knights over rival Bucknell in the title match on April 18. Mendoza took home the John “Pat” Rooney Award as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player for her efforts. Mendoza holds a 4816 career singles mark. Hansen was one of 10 Army players to post double-digit singles wins over the course of 2009-10, going 11-7 overall. That mark included a 7-3 effort during the spring dual match schedule and a run of five straight wins at the end of February and into March. Annie Hang, Robie Verano and Patricia Vollmer all return for their final seasons at West Point. Boasting a 22-10 mark, Hang tied with Houghton in producing the most singles wins in 2009-10. Hang posted a 13-5 record in the spring and also went 1610 overall in doubles. Verano enters her final season tied for 10th on Army’s all-time doubles wins list with 59. Doubles continued to be her strong suit during a junior campaign in which she led the team with a careerhigh 22 doubles wins. Verano was 6-0 in doubles against Patriot League opponents a year ago. Vollmer enjoyed a solid junior season during which she topped Army’s second lineup on many occasions. She went 8-7 in singles and recorded an 8-8 doubles mark on the year. Peck’s 2010-11 roster does not include a single junior and Colton highlights a five sophomores to include Morgen Kiser, Holly Pappafotis, Kari Pope and Larraine Saavedra. All five gained significant experience last season. Saavedra was one of 11 players to reach double-digit singles wins. The Class of 2014 encompasses five different states, includes a trio of four-star recruits, and was ranked No. 14 nationally among women’s Top-25 Mid-Major programs by the Tennis Recruiting Network (www.tennisrecruiting.net). This marks the second time in the last four years that one of Peck’s incoming classes has ranked among the nation’s elite mid-
PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
major classes, as the members of this year’s senior class landed eighth when they entered West Point in 2007. Jamila Paul, Emily Stein and Della Taylor all earned a four-star rating, while the Black Knights also welcome three-star recruit Carly Riney and local product Margaret Iliev to the mix. With a challenging fall slate and equally demanding spring lineup on tap, Peck knows what his team will face if it should remain on track for another conference title. “The Patriot League is continuing to get better each year,” Peck said. “With the addition of Navy and marked improvement within some of the other programs in the league, this season will be a challenge. Although we have quite a few players coming back, we’re still going to be quite a young team and it’s my goal to get those players as much match experience as possible heading into the championships. “I stand by my philosophy that depth is going to be our greatest strength come May,” he continued. “We’ve seen it in the past and you never know what can happen to a player here or there - especially when you consider the rigors of an Academy. It’s my job to make sure that I have a handful of players that are ready to step in at any given moment and not miss a beat. I believe some members of this plebe class will have that ability.” Navy and Army will not meet in the regular season, but the rivals have a chance to do battle in the postseason. The Mids, who became a varsitylevel squad and joined the Patriot League in 200910, advanced to the tournament semifinals last year. Navy will host the 2011 Patriot League Championships in Annapolis, Md., the weekend of April 22-24. Army defeated rival Bucknell, 4-3, to capture the 2010 Patriot League crown on April 18 at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, N.Y. Army will again take full advantage of its stateof-the-art Lichtenberg Tennis Center this spring. The Black Knights are set to host 24 of their 28 spring dual matches at West Point.
2010-11 ARMY WOMEN’S TENNIS PAUL PECK HEAD COACH Head coach Paul Peck has led the Army women’s tennis program to unprecedented success as the dominant force in the Patriot League since taking the reins in the spring of 1995. Beginning with his inaugural campaign, Peck has managed a winning record in all but his first full season at West Point. The Black Knights captured a sixth-straight Patriot League title this April, accompanied by the program’s 10th NCAA Tournament appearance. Under Peck’s guidance, the Black Knights have appeared at the NCAA Tournament in 1999-2001, 2003, 2005-10, while averaging 23 wins a season over the last three years. Peck was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for a 10th time in 2009. He has garnered the award in each of the last four years. Army eclipsed the 15-win mark for the 13th consecutive year en route to claiming its 11th Patriot League title in 2010. The Black Knights did so defeating rival Bucknell, 4-3, in a thrilling championship match at the Turning Stone Resort courts on April 18. Peck has guided the Black Knights to 42 consecutive regular season victories over Patriot League foes. He is also the most successful coach in the history of the program with 274 career wins entering the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Peck has mentored three of the last four Patriot League Players of the Year in Niki Flach (2007) and Anne Houghton (2008, 2009), while placing a multitude of others on the all-league teams. Five players from the 2009 squad earned all-star status in the Patriot League. Houghton became the first Army player in program history to receive a Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional rankings, landing at #20 in March of 2010. Under Peck’s guidance, the Black Knights have established themselves as one of the top tennis programs in the Northeast. West Point has hosted the Eastern Championships since 1998. Peck serves as the organizer and director for the 25-team event, which has grown into one of the largest college tennis tournaments on the East Coast. West Point also hosted the prestigious Wilson/ Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Eastern Women’s Regional Championships in October 2005. Army has hosted the Patriot League Championships six times, including five of the last eight years. A 1984 honors graduate of the University of Illinois, Peck enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1985 and received his commission at officer candidate school at Fort Benning, Ga. He spent three years as a platoon leader in an artillery unit in Germany. Later, Peck commanded an Alpha Battery of 5/18 FA during Operation Desert Storm, earning a Bronze Star for his accomplishments during the war. He also received the MacArthur Leadership Award as the most outstanding officer who exemplified the Army code. After receiving a master’s degree in exercise physiology from Illinois, Peck was assigned to teach in the Academy’s Department of Physical Education. In 1997, he was promoted to the rank of Major before retiring from the Army. Just as notable as his military pursuits are his accomplishments on the tennis
court. After being ranked regionally in the Midwest as a junior player, Peck went on to play at the collegiate level and in many USTA tournaments as an adult. Ranked as high as eighth in the Missouri Valley, he won the Duncan Open in 1990, and twice was selected to play for the All-Army tennis team. A USPTA and USPTR certified pro, Peck boasts a stellar winning percentage of .643 (274-152) during his 15 years as head coach at West Point. A native of Mundelein, Ill., Peck currently resides at West Point with his wife, Karen. Peck has four children, Alex, Caroline, Danny and Haley.
BOBBE VASOS-BENNETT ASSISTANT COACH Ten-time Patriot League Coach of the Year Paul Peck added Bobbe Vasos-Bennett as an assistant coach midway through the 2008-09 season. Since her arrival, the Black Knights have collected two Patriot League crowns. Bennett helps in all aspects of an Army program that has won six-straight Patriot League titles. A two-year letterwinnner at Colorado State, Bennett left her mark on the Rams’ program. She still holds two of the top-10 single-season records in singles play, landing sixth with a 21-9 record in 2001-02 and 10th with a 21-11 mark prior to that in 1999-00. Following graduation in 2002, she returned to her alma mater, Rocky Mountain High School, to serve as the head boys and girls coach from 2003-07. While at Rocky Mountain, Bennett collected two Coach of the Year citations and guided the Lobos to a third-place finish at the state championships in 2007. The team was later honored with the Ned Cooney team sportsmanship award, along with team of the year recognition. Born and raised in Fort Collins, Colo., and the oldest of three children, Bennett had the opportunity to coach her younger brother, Will, during his time at Rocky Mountain. Will, who won the program’s first No. 1 singles title as a senior in 2007, is in the midst of his sophomore season on the University of Iowa’s tennis roster. Before her move to West Point, Bennett spent eight years (2001-08) coaching Team Colorado, a junior elite tennis program. She also served as a zonal and intersectional coach in the Intermountain region. Bennett and her husband, Capt. James Bennett, are the parents of four children – Luke, Ellie, Anna and Jake.

2010-11 ARMY WOMEN’S TENNIS LOOKING BACK AT 2009-10
Army rallied from a 5-5 start to the spring season to finish with its fourth 20-plus-win season since 2005, posting a 20-10 record which included a 5-0 regular season Patriot League mark. The Black Knights won the conference’s regular season crown and served as the No. 1 seed for the 2010 Patriot League Championships for a seventh-straight season. Army defeated tournament host Colgate in the semifinals and met rival Bucknell in the finals. Army defeated the Bison for a fifth consecutive year, 4-3, to capture the Patriot League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for a 10th time.
The Black Knights captured an unprecedented sixth-straight Patriot League title in 2010. The championships were hosted by Colgate at the Turning Stone Resort on Verona, N.Y. Army captured the No. 1 seed for the seventh year in a row to earn a first-round bye. The team cruised to a 4-0 victory over No. 4 Colgate in the semifinals before edging the Bison, 4-3, in a dramatic championship match on Sunday, April 18. Junior Jurelle Mendoza was named the John “Pat” Rooney Award winner as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. After junior Annie Hang’s No. 6 singles victory tied the match, 3-3, Mendoza finished the job with a victory at No. 5 singles to ensure Army would leave upstate New York with championship hardware. Army has claimed 11 championships in the 19 years of the Patriot League’s existence. The conference began receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in 1999, and, since then, Army has captured the title on all but two occasions.
Rookie of the Year: Erin Colton Coach of the Year: Paul Peck
Army went 5-0 against Patriot League competition once again, marking the Black Knights’ eighth undefeated conference season in a row. Army has not lost a Patriot League regularseason match since 2002, winning 42 regular season dual matches in a row against its league foes.
TEAM HONORS
Junior Annie Houghton, Army’s No. 1 singles player since arriving at West Point, continued to make history in 2010 as she became the first player in program history to break into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional rankings. Houghton ranked No. 20 in the northeast.
Junior Jurelle Mendoza entered the NCAA Tournament riding a team-best 14-match win streak. She went a perfect 12-0 in dual-match play in the spring and finished with a 19-6 singles mark in 2009-10. Mendoza is one of 10 players who eclipsed the double-digit singles win mark, including Jessica Ahn (14), Kristin Beehler (13), Erin Colton (10), Paige Ford (10), Annie Hang (22), Audrey Hansen (11), Annie Houghton (22), Larraine Saavedra (10), Michael Tollerton (15) and Robie Verano (11).
Juniors Michael Tollerton and Robie Verano lead Army’s doubles corps with a 22-11 mark this season, playing primarily at No. 3. Junior Annie Houghton and senior co-captain Kristin Beehler spent the majority of the season as Army’s No. 1 doubles tandem. The pair boasts a 17-10 record, which included a 14-5 spring mark. After an injury sidelined Beehler for the 2010 Patriot League Tournament, junior Jessica Ahn stepped in to fill her shoes. Ahn and Houghton posted a 2-0 record at the championships.
Army went 19-4 when winning the doubles point in 2009-10.
Freshman Erin Colton became the sixth Army player in the last eight years to garner Patriot League Rookie of the Year laurels. The first team All-Patriot League honoree went 2-2 in singles and 4-0 in doubles against Patriot League competition. Colton has spent nearly the entirety of her rookie campaign saddled with filling the No. 2 singles and doubles flights for head coach Paul Peck.
Army enjoyed home court advantage in 22 of its dual matches this spring. Snow and cool Northeast temperatures kept the Black Knights inside the state-of-the-art Lichtenberg Tennis Center throughout much of the spring. Army enters the NCAA Tournament having played outside just twice this season, facing Fairleigh Dickinson (April 3) and Long Island (April 10) outdoors. Army lost both matches by a 4-3 score. Long Island went on to finish the regular season with a 15-3 mark and earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Cool temperatures and high winds forced the Patriot League Tournament to be played inside.
Head coach Paul Peck ended 2009-10 sitting on 274 career victories, all of which have come at West Point. The winningest coach in program history, Peck has coached in 427 career matches during his 15-plus years at West Point. Peck repeated as Patriot League Coach of the Year for an 11th time in 2009-10.
Women’s tennis contributed to what was a more than an impressive spring for Army’s athletic teams. The Patriot League powerhouse was among five Army teams to win a regular season and/or tournament crown, joining baseball, lacrosse, men’s tennis and softball.
