West Point The United States Military Academy is renowned because of its historic and distinguished reputation as a military academy, and as a leading, progressive institution of higher education. Made legendary in books and movies produced over the years, the Academy’s “Long Gray Line” of graduates includes some of our nation’s most famous and influential men: Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, George S. Patton, Omar Bradley, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower and Norman Schwarzkopf. Because of this superb education and leadership experience, West Point graduates historically have been sought for high level civilian and military leadership positions. Their numbers include two U.S. presidents, several ambassadors, state governors, legislators, judges, cabinet members, educators, astronauts and corporate executives. Today, West Point continues to provide hundreds of young men and women the unique opportunity to develop physically, ethically and intellectually while building a foundation for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career as an Army officer in the service of our nation. Cadets have much more responsibility in running the Academy than students in most other colleges or universities. It adds to the leadership experience. Cadets succeed at West Point because of the support they receive from the staff and faculty. After all, many faculty members are West Point graduates and understand the challenge cadets face on a daily basis. They also serve as ideal role models, showing cadets what Army life is like. The U.S. Military Academy’s primary strength is its ability to develop leaders of character who are committed to “Duty, Honor, Country” and selfless service to our nation.

West Point The mission of the U.S. Military Academy is to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country; professional growth throughout a career as an officer in the U.S. Army; and a lifetime of selfless service to the Nation. Founded on March 16, 1802, the Academy celebrated its Bicentennial in 2002. But West Point’s role in America’s history dates to the Revolutionary War, when both sides realized the strategic importance of the commanding plateau on the west bank of the Hudson River. Gen. George Washington considered West Point to be the most strategic position in America. He personally selected Thaddeus Kosciuszko, one of the heroes of Saratoga, to design the fortifications in 1778 after problems arose with French engineers originally placed in charge of the design. In 1779, General Washington transferred his headquarters to West Point. Continental soldiers built forts, batteries and defensive barriers. A 100-ton iron chain was extended across the Hudson to control river traffic. Today, several links from that chain are arranged at Trophy Point as a reminder of West Point’s original fortifications. In 1802 President Thomas Jefferson signed the legislation establishing the U.S. Military Academy to create an institution devoted to the arts and sciences of warfare. This effectively eliminated America’s wartime reliance on foreign engineers and artillerists. West Point became the nation’s first engineering school and served as the model for engineering programs which were eventually established at other colleges. Col. Sylvanus Thayer, the “Father of the Military Academy,” served as Superintendent from 1817 through 1833. He upgraded academic standards, instilled military discipline and emphasized honorable conduct. Early graduates were largely responsible for the construction of the nation’s initial railway lines, bridges, harbors, and roads. Although the curriculum maintains its focus on engineering, in recent decades the program of instruction has markedly changed, providing cadets a selection of more than 40 majors. This tradition of academic and military excellence, guided by a demanding standard of moral and ethical conduct, remains the cornerstone of the West Point experience. It is said at West Point that “much of the history we teach was made by those people we taught.” The Academy has produced famous leaders throughout its illustrious past…Civil War Generals Grant, Sherman, Lee, and Jackson, to name but a few. In World War I, 34 of the 38 corps and division commanders were graduates. World War II would see many graduates reach brigadier general or higher, to include Eisenhower, MacArthur, Bradley and Patton. In more recent conflicts, MacArthur, Ridgway, Westmoreland, Abrams, Schwarzkopf and Abizaid were in command. Academy graduates have also excelled in air and space exploration, and countless others went on from military service to become leaders in medicine, law, business, religion and science. Since its founding, the Military Academy fulfills the same mission as it always has . . . to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets. It accomplishes this mission by developing cadets in three essential areas: intellectual, physical and military. These developmental paths are balanced and fully integrated into the daily life of each young man and woman at the Academy. Intellectual growth is fostered through an academic curriculum that provides a broad liberal education in the arts and sciences. The electives program builds upon the foundation of the core, allowing cadets to develop even greater competence in selected areas. In addition, the fields-of-study and majors nurture the development of creativity, critical thinking, and self-directed learning, essential characteristics of 21st century officers. The four-year academic experience leads to a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Army. Physical development is achieved through a rigorous athletic and physical education program. Each cadet participates at the intercollegiate, club or intramural level each semester. This readies the cadet for the physical demands of military life and helps teach good judgment and self-discipline, even while under mental and physical stress. Military development begins with the cadet’s first day at West Point. Most

military training takes place during the summer, with new cadets undergoing Cadet Basic Training, or Beast Barracks, their first year, followed the second summer by Cadet Field Training. Cadets spend their third and fourth summers serving in active Army units around the world; attending specialty training such as airborne, air assault or northern warfare or helping to train the firstand second-year cadets. The Cadet Leader Development System seeks to give the cadets increasing responsibility until they are ready to receive their commissions and assume their duties as leaders in today’s Army. Moral and ethical values guide cadets throughout their four years at West Point. Commitment to the Academy’s “Bedrock Values,” based on integrity and respect for the dignity of others, begins on the first day. Integrity is reflected in the Cadet Honor Code which states: “A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.” Respect denotes that cadets treat others with the same respect and dignity they themselves would expect. At West Point, it is not enough to train leaders—they must be leaders of character. Admission is keenly competitive and is open to young men and women from all states and territories and from every socioeconomic level. Prospective cadets must receive a nomination by a member of Congress or from the Department of the Army. The Academy seeks candidates who possess records of success in academics, athletics and leadership indicative of wellrounded individuals. Although the life of a cadet is demanding, there remains an array of club activities ranging from golf, skiing, boxing, crew and orienteering to such organizations as the cadet radio station, Habitat for Humanity and Big BrothersBig Sisters. Additionally, the U.S. Corps of Cadets hosts a Special Olympics event each spring. Today’s Military Academy is a vastly different institution from the small academy legislated into being by Congress in 1802. Originally just 1,800 acres, the Academy has grown to more than 16,000 acres. The first graduating class numbered just two men; today’s classes graduate more than 900 new officers annually, both men and women, who are prepared for leadership roles within the Army. With the expansion of knowledge and the changing needs of the United States Army and the nation, life at West Point has changed to keep pace. Ever mindful of its rich heritage, the U.S. Military Academy is developing leaders for tomorrow, and its focus remains the national Courtney Clement needs of the 21st century. 2010 Cross Country Team Captain USMA ’11

Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan BOO CORRIGAN • DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS • NOTRE DAME ’90 Boo Corrigan was named the Academy’s director of athletics on Feb. 1, 2011. “We have an opportunity to work every day with a truly exceptional group of young people,” Corrigan said. “The opportunities they receive through intercollegiate athletics will help shape their own leadership styles as they become officers in the U.S. Army. We have a great team that focuses daily on our cadetathletes. We strive to enhance their overall experience as they develop into the leaders our nation needs.” In his short time as athletic director, Corrigan has strengthened and expanded Army Athletics’ relationships in several key areas. In his tenure, Army has secured a new apparel agreement with Nike, a new pouring rights contract with Coke and bringing in the Aspire Group to enhance ticket sales and better serve Army season ticket holders. Corrigan also crafted the Team Army concept, a comprehensive plan designed to add significant value to Army’s corporate sponsorships while maintaining the tradition of West Point Athletics. Corrigan, who has a proven record as a fundraiser, spearheaded changes in the Army A Club and ticket operations that have resulted in more than $20 million dollars in major gifts and record-setting annual giving during his tenure. During that time the funding for a new lacrosse facility, that is scheduled to break ground, was secured. In addition to his role in enhancing revenues for Army Athletics, Corrigan led a strategic planning process that developed a new mission statement and goals for the department. In his first full two years at West Point, Corrigan has overseen a program that owns eight Patriot League regular season or tournament championships and sent eight teams to the NCAA postseason (rifle). Thirty-three cadets have earned a major award from their conference,. In 2012-13 alone, Army accounted for more than 100 all-league citations. Hockey’s Cheyne Rocha and lacrosse’s Brendan Buckley each captured the Senior CLASS Award in their respective sports, making Army the only school in the nation to have multiple winners in 2012-13. The 2012-13 season was one of the most successful in recent memory on the fields of friendly strife. Army teams combined to post an overall record of 236-183-8. The program’s .562 winning percentage was the highest in eight years. The winter sports programs had their best season in five years as the women’s basketball team won the Patriot League regular season title, the men’s basketball team posted its first winning season in 28 years and the rifle squad advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 10th consecutive season. It was also a great year in the competition against fellow service academies. Army split the season series versus Navy, 16-16-1, marking the best winning percentage against the Mids (.500) since 2004-05. The Black Knights owned a 4-2-1 record against Air Force, improving the record to 20-18-2 (.525) versus service academy foes in 201213. Cadet-athletes have continued to thrive in the classroom under Corrigan’s watch. In his two full years, Army has boasted seven Academic All-Americans, including six first-team selections. Lacrosse’s Brendan Buckely became the first Army athlete to capture Academic All-American of the Year honors in 2012. In 2011, the Black Knights’ football team boasted two first-team CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, a first for the program since 1957. Since the start of the 2011-12 season, Army boasts six Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year, including Buckley, a two-time overall men’s winner. Twenty of Army’s 24 NCAA programs scored above the national average in the

-10-

2013 NCAA APR report. The men’s cross country and wrestling teams earned public recognition for finishing in the top 10 percent of their respective sport. The cross country squad boasted a perfect score of 1,000. In addition, former football standout Andrew Rodriguez, Class of 2012, became the first Army player to win the National Football Foundation’s Willam V. Campbell Trophy, which is presented annually to the nation’s top football scholar-athlete. Rodriguez later was honored with the Amateur Athletic Union’s James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the country. He was the first Army player to receive the award since 1946 and was just the third player in history (Peyton Manning, Tim Tebow) to win both the Campbell Trophy and Sullivan Award. Army has been the focus of national attention since Corrigan’s arrival. He was instrumental in supporting the CBS documentary, “Game of Honor,” that chronicled the Black Knights’ 2011 football season leading up to its annual showdown with archrival Navy. Not only was the two-hour program broadcast to a national audience on Showtime, but also won the Emmy Award for Best Sports Documentary. The Army football team was also the focus of a behind-the-scenes book titled, “Soldiers First,” written by New York Times writer Joe Drape. Corrigan has also made his mark on the aesthetics of historic Michie Stadium. In order to upgrade the appearance and provide a better experience for Army fans, Corrigan implemented a Michie Stadium branding and signage campaign that began in 2011. The first phase of the project was completed prior to the 2012 season. In addition to his duties at West Point, Corrigan has been an active leader in the Patriot League, serving as chairman of the conference’s Broadband Committee. Corrigan, who was the senior associate athletic director for external affairs at Duke University starting in August 2008, brings a wealth of leadership to his post. He is a proven administrator with 18 previous years of experience in all areas of revenue generation, external affairs, staff management and leadership. Corrigan’s chief responsibilities at Duke included the oversight of the Blue Devil corporate partnerships and the Marketing, Promotions, Ticket, Internet Operations, Sports Information and Video Services departments. In only two years at Duke, Corrigan was responsible for the negotiation of multi-media rights to ISP. A supervisor of the 2009 NCAA Champion women’s tennis and 2010 NCAA Champion men’s lacrosse programs, Corrigan was a part of three NCAA Championships at Duke in just two seasons. He is currently a member of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Rules committee and the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Committee, while serving on the Executive Budget Committee at Duke. Prior to arriving at Duke in August of 2008, he oversaw Notre Dame’s corporate relations and marketing as an associate athletic director for five years. During his stint at Notre Dame, Corrigan spearheaded the redesign of its official athletics website and creation of 15-20 hours of original video content weekly. That resulted in a 35 percent increase in page views and unique users. Corrigan also worked directly with ISP Sports, CSTV, and NBC Sports from a sales and marketing standpoint. Before joining the staff at Notre Dame, Corrigan spent nearly three years as the associate athletic director for marketing at the United States Naval Academy. He was responsible for turning the marketing department from a deficit to profit in his first year with full budget responsibility for the department. Corrigan also was intimately involved with the re-branding of the Annual Giving Campaign (The Blue and Gold), which led to an increase of 75 percent year over year donations. His collegiate experience also includes a stint as assistant director of marketing at Florida State from 1992-95. Corrigan is a 1990 University of Notre Dame graduate with a degree in economics. He is married to the former Kristen Aceto, a former field hockey and lacrosse player at the University of Virginia who also earned a master’s degree from the school. The couple has three children, Finley, Tre and Brian. He is the youngest of seven children of Gene and Lena Corrigan.

Head Coach Troy Engle TROY ENGLE • HEAD COACH • SIXTH SEASON • AMHERST ’83 Troy Engle brings a wealth of international and collegiate coaching experience to West Point as he enters his sixth season as the head coach of the Army men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams.

1995-96 and again in 1998.

This is his third stint at the U.S. Military Academy after previously serving as an instructor of physical education and assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track and field teams from

In his first season at the helm, Engle guided the men to a sweep of the cross country, indoor, and outdoor Patriot League Championships, and was named the League’s men’s Coach of the Year in both the Indoor and Outdoor track campaigns. In 2009-10, Engle led the women’s cross country team to its first Star Meet win since 2005, as well as another indoor-outdoor season sweep of the Midshipmen by the Black Knight men’s track squad. The 2010 track season was also highlighted by Army’s 14th men’s indoor Patriot League title and an NCAA Outdoor Championship trip by Domonick Sylve. Sylve qualified for the national semifinals in the 110-meter hurdles after winning his heat in the national quarterfinal. Success continued in 2010-11 as women’s cross country defeated Navy for its first back-to-back Star Meet wins since 2004-05. Men’s track and field swept both the indoor and outdoor Star Meets for their sixth-straight victories against the Midshipmen. Sylve capped off his record-breaking career by earning All-America honors after advancing to the national semifinals once again. Sylve placed 11th overall at the 2011 NCAA Championships to earn secondteam recognition, becoming the 34th All-American in Academy track and field history. In February 2011, Engle was once against selected by USA Track & Field as an assistant coach for endurance events for the PanAmerican Games. The 2011 Pan-American Games took place in October in Guadalajara, Mexico. In 2012, the women’s distance contingent shined for Engle as freshman Lisa Junta became Army’s first ECAC Champion on the track with her winning time in the 10,000-meter run, simultaneously qualifying for the NCAA Regionals. The Black Knights spent most of the season attacking the Academy record book, as the cadets posted 47 marks that rank among the

top 10 all-time, including two Army records. Junta accounted for seven top-10 times during her first season. That theme continued in 2012-13, as Junta collected her second ECAC track title, this time at the indoor meet in the 5,000 meters. Junta’s time snapped a 26-year old Academy record and was one of six program standards set during the season. The Black Knights have also been successful in the classroom under Engle as men’s cross country has been named to the USTFCCCA AllAcademic team list each of his five seasons and the women being recognized each of the last four seasons. Junta was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year following the 2013 indoor season, becoming the third Black Knight (Tom Wagner, 2012; Andrew Ferrara, 2009) under Engle’s watch to earn the distinction. She also garnered First Team Academic AllDistrict accolades, narrowly missing Academic All-America plaudits. Engle also has a prominent career on the international coaching scene, most recently being chosen to coach the Team USA distance athletes at the 2013 World Games, which took place in Moscow, Russia this past August. Engle coached the U.S. track and field team in the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing. During his tenure with the United States Olympic Committee, which began in 2006, Engle also served as the associate director of the Paralympic Division. Engle directed all aspects of the U.S. track and field team’s preparation for the Paralympic Games and served as the head coach at all major international competitions leading up to the Paralympics, including the Pan American and World Cup games. Engle orchestrated a growth in the program that resulted in an increase in the U.S. team’s medal count and a jump in the track and field standings to second behind China. Engle has also served in various leadership capacities within USA Track and Field, both as assistant coach at such meets as the 1995 World Indoor Championships in Barcelona and through his involvement with the Coaching Education Program. He has lectured in the Level II endurance program since 1998. In addition, he has conducted clinics for the world governing body of track and field, the International Association of Athletic Federations in four nations and has lectured at numerous coaching clinics around the United States. Prior to joining the USOC, Engle was the head coach of the men’s and women’s track and field and cross country teams, assistant athletic director, and athletic department business manager at Division III Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif. He turned the women’s cross country team, which was initially unable to field a

Head Coach Troy Engle full program, into a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title winner by his fourth year. In his seventh and final year at the school, Engle led the team to its first NCAA appearance in 12 years. Engle garnered three West Regional NCAA Division III Coach of the Year honors at Occidental; one for cross country (2006) and two in indoor track and field (2003 and 2005). A native of Council Grove, Kan., Engle served as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Kansas State University for the 1998-99 academic year. There, he helped coach all the events and assisted in recruiting a class which was rated fourth-best in Division I by Track and Field News. In between his first two stints at Army, Engle served as the director of sports for the Papua New Guinea Sports Commission. Engle directed all sports development programs for the nation of five million people, and served as the national track and field coach. He first served as the national coach for Papua New Guinea between 1987 and 1991. Engle closed out a successful stint as head men’s and women’s track and cross country coach at Washington (Mo.) University (1992-94) by guiding the women’s outdoor track and field and cross country teams to the University Athletic Association title in his final season. His efforts earned him UAA Coach of the Year honors in both track and cross country. Engle also served as the men’s track and cross country coach at Swarthmore College (1991-92). In addition to his international and collegiate coaching experience, Engle is a respected administrator and clinician. He was a member of the NCAA Track and Field Committee from 2001-06, chairing it from 2005-06. Engle earned his bachelor’s degree from Amherst College in 1983 and a master’s degree in sport management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1985. He currently resides at West Point with his wife, Katrina, and daughters Nawen and Kassidy, and are expecting a baby boy named Troy in September.

Coaches/Support Staff SHANNON O’BRIEN • ASSISTANT COACH • SECOND SEASON • KEENE STATE ’05 Shannon O’Brien enters her second season with the Black Knight cross country program in 2013. O’Brien, who also helps guide Army’s distance contingent during track season, came to West Point from Florida State, where she served two years as meet director and graduate manager for the women’s track and field and cross country programs. During her first season with the Army cross country program in 2012, the Black Knight men earned their best point total at the Patriot League Championships since 2008, while the women scored their best mark since 2005. Also at the conference meet, Lisa Junta earned Army’s best individual finish since 1998, running to a third-place finish to garner first-team all-league honors. The Black Knights collected five All-Patriot League certificates, their highest total since 2008. Success continued into the NCAA East Regional meet, where Junta earned the best individual finish in women’s program history and Ricardo Galindo recorded the men’s highest individual mark since 2008. Army also succeeded in the classroom as Junta, Galindo and Kendall Ward were voted to the Academic All-Patriot League team before both the men’s and women’s squads earned Division I All-Academic recognition by the USTFCCCA.

At FSU, O’Brien was responsible for designing a training regiment for walk-on athletes as well as conducting daily practices for that contingent. With her guidance, four student-athletes were offered scholarships to run for the perennial national contender program. Working alongside FSU head coach Karen Harvey, the women’s cross country team placed second at the NCAAs in 2010 and fourth in 2011, while the track team’s distance unit enjoyed similar success on the regional and national stage. Prior to her two-year stint with the Seminoles, O’Brien was an assistant coach/coaching intern at Dartmouth College with the Big Green’s track and cross country teams. O’Brien got her first taste of recruiting while in Hanover, N.H., as she worked on arranging official visits and contacted potential student-athletes. O’Brien also spent her undergraduate years in New Hampshire, receiving a bachelor’s degree in English from Keene State College in 2005. The middle-distance specialist was an All-American for the Owls in the 800 meters, and still maintains her hold on school records in the 500 meters, 400-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay. Following her graduation, she worked at her alma mater as an assistant coach through the summer of 2006. O’Brien, who received her master’s degree in sport management from Florida State in 2012, has a USATF Level 1 Certification and has worked for running camps across the country, including Vermont and Oregon.

2013 Season Preview It’s a new season and new mentality for Army cross country, but the goals remain unchanged. It’s been five years since the Black Knights took home a Patriot League title and three years since capturing a Gold Star in the annual Navy meet. But instead of being angry and going into panic mode, a calm, centered and focused aura can be felt by the always-hungry for success Army team. “To quote Invictus, ‘I am the master of my fate,’” said sixthyear Army head coach Troy Engle. “We’ve made it a point to constantly remind each other, as a team and coaching staff, that all we have control over is our own preparation. We’re healthier and more fit than we’ve ever been and that’s all we can focus on, taking care of the moment.” Ricardo Galindo and Lisa Junta earned the top finishes in every race last season for the men’s and women’s teams, respectively, and both are back in uniform this fall. With an experienced support cast around them and the addition of a talented group of freshmen, Army has the tools to move to the front of the pack. Captains Galindo was tabbed to lead the men’s squad this season after having a breakout year in 2012. The senior earned the Black Knights’ top finish in all seven races last season highlighted by winning the individual title at Navy, a ninth-place finish at the Patriot League Championships, and Army’s best individual showing at the NCAA Regionals since 2008. “We have a unique situation on the men’s side that our captain will lead at or near the front,” Engle said of Galindo. “Ricky is a great captain in terms of his presence and leadership abilities. He brings the whole package and has a great supportive cast around him.”

Ricardo Galindo

Galindo, an All-Patriot League second-team performer in 2012, is partnered on the women’s side by senior Liz O’Donnell. O’Donnell, a former Patriot League

Rookie of the Meet (2010), got off to a strong start last year before having the campaign cut short with injury. She finished in Army’s top three in all four meets, including the Black Knights’ No. 2 time at the Iona Meet of Champions. “The women have been exceptionally diligent this season,” said Engle. “They have been focusing on the small things, and without hesitation, in unison, they said it’s Liz O’Donnell because Liz is doing a great job as a captain; she’s really stepped up as a leader and set a great tone.” Returners Galindo and O’Donnell have the support of an experienced and talented group around them. The key returner on the women’s side is Lisa Junta. Junta had Army’s top time in all seven meets last season, including the best individual finish at the NCAA Regional meet in program history. The AllPatriot League first-team honoree will look to continue the momentum of a record-setting track season in 2013. “In addition to Lisa, I’m excited to see Lindsay Gabow, Madison Hill and Katie Collins step up. Gabow had an outstanding start as a freshman but it was curtailed by a lingering injury from CBT. Hill missed her entire freshman season with an injury, and Collins has plans to go out with a big bang as a senior.” With the exception of Galindo, the men’s side graduated the majority of their top finishers

2013 Season Preview from a season ago, offering an opportunity for those on the current roster to move into key contributing positions in 2013.

Cody Barger

“The thing that has most impressed me about the men’s group is that we go 12 deep this year,” said Engle. “We’ll have someone break out to the front, that was Ricky last year and it could be him again, but it could be any number of guys, especially Cody Barger and Thomas Girardot.”

Girardot was among Army’s top seven throughout the season in 2012, while Barger broke his way into the top seven by midyear. Newcomers Joining Army’s returners are 17 plebes – 13 on the men’s side and four on the women’s. Unlike previous summers, however, the newest Black Knights returned to post with only small bumps and bruises. “It’s a season of firsts,” said Engle. “In addition to our returners coming back in really good shape, it’s the first time we’ve come out of Cadet Basic Training with all of our plebes healthy. In my wildest dreams I never would have thought of having a class this big. While a handful of them are true middle distance runners who will be among the best in the Patriot League within the next 2-3 years, we also have some truly talented cross country runners. “We have a group that is passionate about representing Army who has the ability to contribute right away,” Engle continued. “However, we don’t expect anything from them because with expectations come pressure and urgency, and that only results in carelessness and recklessness. The quality of the class and the group dynamics are really impressive.” Newcomers to keep an eye on, based on Engle and assistant coach Shannon O’Brien’s evaluations, include Jack Scranton, Matt Bearden, Nicole Carter and Brianna Miller, all of whom could step into the top seven or 12 for the Black Knights.

Schedule Army’s schedule remains relatively unchanged from recent seasons, with the one wrinkle being the annual CornellBinghamton tri-meet changed to a dual meet solely with the Big Red (Sept. 13). With the Army-Navy Star Meet set for Oct. 18 at West Point, the Black Knights will have two dual meets on their calendar for the first time since 2010. “The Army-Navy Star Meet is at home this year which is exciting,” Engle stated. “We always look forward to running in front of our home crowd. It takes on an important place in our schedule.” In addition to the Army Open to begin the year on Sept. 6, the Black Knights will compete in two other large meets prior to the postseason – the Iona Meet of Champions (Sept. 21) and the Paul Short Run (Oct. 5). Lafayette will serve as the host for this season’s Patriot League Championships, slated for Nov. 2. Army will then battle for a spot at the NCAA Championships when it competes at the NCAA Regionals at Van Cortlandt Park on Nov. 15. “We’re starting everything a week later and that’s by design,” said Engle of the Army schedule. “We’ve tried to remove this sense of urgency. We’ve changed the focus. I don’t expect our first couple meets to be good indicators of race ability or fitness, we won’t showcase in those races. I don’t anticipate us toeing the line and strapping on the competitive spikes until probably Paul Short, which will have nine out of 10 of the Patriot League teams.” Two of those conference teams are rather unknowns to Army as Boston University and Loyola (Md.) joined the Patriot League this summer. Despite the lack of familiarity, Engle is not concerned. “At the end of the day, all we have control over is ourselves. And for us that means each kid has to stay healthy and keep a good perspective. As long as that happens, I’m confident that the rest will take care of itself and we’ll have a successful fall.”

The Patriot League, which was founded on the principles of admitting athletes who are academically representative of their class, is in its third decade of academic and athletic achievement. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education. The Patriot League began as a successful Division I-AA (now called Football Championship Subdivision) football conference in 1986. Full League members include American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy. Associate members include Fordham in football, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in women’s rowing and Georgetown in both football and women’s rowing. These member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. Alumni from Patriot League colleges and universities have played a leadership role in the shaping of our country. In the classroom, the Patriot League’s full-member institutions, individually and collectively, consistently rank among the top Division I programs in the NCAA Graduation Rates Report. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first among all Division I conferences offering scholarships in student-athlete graduation rates according to the NCAA Graduation Rates report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 90 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. League members have also distinguished themselves on the field of play. The Patriot League sponsors championship competition in 24 sports (11 for men; 13 for women). Championship teams from 15 sports are guaranteed advancement into NCAA post-season competition: baseball, men and women’s basketball, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men and women’s lacrosse, rowing, men and women’s soccer, softball, men and women’s tennis and volleyball. Along the timeline of Patriot League history about three-quarters of the Patriot League’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year also received All-Patriot League status for their exemplary athletic performance. In the Patriot League’s history, more than 200 student-athletes have been recognized as CoSIDA Academic AllAmericans, while more than 12,000 have qualified for the League’s Academic Honor Roll. More than 30 studentathletes have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Additionally, Patriot League student-athletes have earned Fulbright Scholarships, Rhodes Scholarships, Marshall Scholarships and NACDA/Disney Scholarships.
