The United States Military Academy is renowned because of its historic and distinguished reputation as a military academy, and as a leading, progressive institution of higher education. Made legendary in books and movies produced over the years, the Academy’s “Long Gray Line” of graduates includes some of our nation’s most famous and influential men: Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, George S. Patton, Omar Bradley, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower and Norman Schwarzkopf. Because of this superb education and leadership experience, West Point graduates historically have been sought for high level civilian and military leadership positions. Their numbers include two U.S. presidents, several ambassadors, state governors, legislators, judges, cabinet members, educators, astronauts and corporate executives. Today, West Point continues to provide hundreds of young men and women the unique opportunity to develop physically, ethically and intellectually while building a foundation for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career as an Army officer in the service of our nation. Cadets have much more responsibility in running the Academy than students in most other colleges or universities. It adds to the leadership experience. Cadets succeed at West Point because of the support they receive from the staff and faculty. After all, many faculty members are West Point graduates and understand the challenge cadets face on a daily basis. They also serve as ideal role models, showing cadets what Army life is like. The U.S. Military Academy’s primary strength is its ability to develop leaders of character who are committed to “Duty, Honor, Country” and selfless service to our nation.

Robert E. Lee ’29 The Academy’s ninth Superintendent (1852-55), Lee was a model cadet during his four years at West Point. He graduated second in his class and never earned a single demerit during his four years at the Academy. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was selected to serve as Commanding General of the Army, but instead resigned his commission and was named General-In-Chief of the Confederate Army from 1861 to 1865. Lee’s surrender to Ulysses S. Grant (USMA 1843), at Appomattox Court House, Va., ended the Civil War. Fort Lee, Va., was named in his honor. Ulysses S. Grant ’43 Grant distinguished himself during the Civil War at the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863; his victory secured control of the Mississippi River for the Union. President Abe Lincoln later appointed him Commanding General of the Army in March 1864. On April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House, Va., Robert E. Lee (USMA 1829) surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to him, ending the Civil War. Grant later served as the 18th President of the United States from 1869 to 1877. The General’s doctrine of aggressive employment of massive armor forces continue to prove themselves in combat arenas around the world. Omar N. “From the birth of our existence, America has had a faith in the future -- a belief that where we’re going is better than where we’ve been, even when the path ahead is uncertain. To fulfill that promise, generations of Americans have built upon the foundation of our forefathers -- finding opportunity, fighting injustice, forging a more perfect union. Our achievement would not be possible without the Long Gray Line that has sacrificed for duty, for honor, for country.” - PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA
“My four years at West Point were wonderful. I loved every minute of it and particularly the last three years. I loved the history. I loved the tradition. I liked wearing the uniform. I felt like I belonged there. Everything was meaningful to me. There is no question in my mind the proudest day of my father’s life was the day I graduated from West Point. There is a picture of the two of us standing on ‘The Plain’ and he is just beaming.” - General H. Norman Schwarzkopf “I was so proud to be on the verge of entering the only institution in American society at that time that was totally integrated, in which I would have the opportunity to rise, based solely on performance and ability. 2015 MEDIA GUIDE
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Now in the midst of his fifth year as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at the Army West Point, Boo Corrigan has guided the Black Knights to incredible successes on the fields of friendly strife, victories over Navy, surpassed ambitious fundraising goals, upgraded several facilities, added three varsity sports and created a new brand identity, all while cadet-athletes continued to raise the bar academically. Corrigan was named Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on Feb. 1, 2011 and the short time since, Army has won the “Star” series against Navy, claimed the overall competition against the Midshipmen, added Academic All-American certificates, raised the annual fund by nearly $3 million, increased the “For Us All Capital Campaign by $55 million,” completed fundraising on a new lacrosse building and established 10new program endowments. Under Corrigan’s leadership, Army has added women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s rugby to its offering of sports with nearly a quarter of the Corps of Cadets, around 1,000, competing in varsity sports under the athletic department. In addition to the additional sport offerings, a massive state-of-the art videoboard was added to Tate Rink, a press box was included at Doubleday Field at Johnson Stadium, the ticket office was upgraded and moved to a more fan-friendly location in Michie Stadium and work will begin the fall on a lacrosse building that will include locker rooms, team rooms, weight room, athletic training space and much more for both the men’s and women’s lacrosse programs. A branding campaign that started in 2011 at Michie Stadium will continue with additions to Christl Arena this fall. Corrigan has strengthened and expanded Army Athletics’ relationships in several key areas. In his tenure, Army has secured a new apparel agreement with Nike, a new pouring rights contract with Coke and bringing in the Aspire Group to enhance ticket sales and better serve Army season ticket holders. Corrigan also crafted the Team Army concept, a comprehensive plan designed to add significant value to Army’s corporate sponsorships while maintaining the tradition of West Point Athletics. In his first full three years at West Point, Corrigan has overseen a program that owns 11 Patriot League regular season or tournament championships and sent eight teams to the NCAA postseason. Thirty-three cadets have earned a major award from their conference,

Last season, the senior class of 2015 set a high standard for future classes with a .556 winning percentage, marking the highest four-year percentage since the Class of 1995 finished with a .557 mark. In addition, Army West Point had another great year in the classroom with three cadet-athletes earning Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports. Army West Point also partnered with Nike to complete a successful rebranding initiative in the spring of 2015. Corrigan ushered in a new logo and word mark for Army West Point as part of the rebrand. In 2013-14, Corrigan led Army Athletics to its first star series victory since 1996, going 12-11 in star competitions against Navy. It was the 12th victory in the series for the Academy. West Point went 18-13 overall against the Mids during the year and has a 34-29-1 mark versus Navy in the last two seasons. Army finished a very successful campaign in 2013-14 with an overall record of 235-173-7 for a .575 winning percentage, the highest mark since 2004-05. The Black Knights brought home league titles in men’s tennis, baseball and women’s basketball. Army won regular season titles in men’s tennis and baseball, while the women’s hoops squad won the league tournament and was a 13th seed in the NCAA Tournament. Ten of Army’s squads participated in Patriot League postseason, while rifle earned an NCAA berth for the 11th-straight season. Army collected more than 100 allleague citations in 2012-13 alone. Hockey’s Cheyne Rocha and lacrosse’s Brendan Buckley each captured the Senior CLASS Award in their respective sports, making Army the only school in the nation to have multiple winners in 2012-13. During the 2012-13 season, Army teams combined to post an overall record of 236-183-8 for a .562 winning percentage. The winter sports programs had their best season in five years as the women’s basketball team won the Patriot League regular season title, the men’s basketball team posted its first winning season in 28 years and the rifle squad advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 10th consecutive season. It was also a great year in the competition against fellow service academies. Army split the season series versus Navy, 16-16-1, marking the best winning percentage against the Mids (.500) since 2004-05. The Black Knights owned a 4-2-1 record against Air Force, improving the record to 20-18-2 (.525) versus service academy foes in 2012-13. Cadet-athletes have continued to thrive in the classroom under Corrigan’s watch. In his three full years, Army has boasted 12 Academic All-Americans, including seven first-team selections. Lacrosse’s Brendan Buckely became the first Army athlete to capture Academic All-American of the Year honors in 2012. In 2011, the Black Knights’ football team boasted two first-team CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, a first for the program since 1957. Since the start of the 2011-12 season, Army boasts six Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year, including Buckley, a two-
11
time overall men’s winner. During the 2013-14 season, Army registered five Academic All-American selections. Twenty of Army’s 24 NCAA programs scored above the national average in the 2013 NCAA APR report. The men’s cross country and wrestling teams earned public recognition for finishing in the top 10 percent of their respective sport. The cross country squad boasted a perfect score of 1,000. In addition, former football standout Andrew Rodriguez, Class of 2012, became the first Army player to win the National Football Foundation’s Willam V. Campbell Trophy, which is presented annually to the nation’s top football scholar-athlete. Rodriguez later was honored with the Amateur Athletic Union’s James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the country. He was the first Army player to receive the award since 1946 and was just the third player in history (Peyton Manning, Tim Tebow) to win both the Campbell Trophy and Sullivan Award. Army has been the focus of national attention since Corrigan’s arrival. He was instrumental in supporting the CBS documentary, “Game of Honor,” that chronicled the Black Knights’ 2011 football season leading up to its annual showdown with arch-rival Navy. Not only was the two-hour program broadcast to a national audience on Showtime, but also won the Emmy Award for Best Sports Documentary. The Army football team was also the focus of a behind-the-scenes book titled, “Soldiers First,” written by New York Times writer Joe Drape. In addition to his duties at West Point, Corrigan has been an active leader in the Patriot League, serving as chairman of the conference’s Broadband Committee. Given by Lee R. Anderson, class of 1961, and Penny Anderson, the Anderson Rugby Complex broke ground in the fall of 2005 and the $8.35 million project was completed in May of 2007. The Anderson Rugby Complex is positioned alongside the Hudson River, just north of West Point’s Shea Stadium. The facility boasts a state of the art all-weather practice pitch alongside the main natural turf competition field, which are floodlit, in addition to the center. The first floor of the two-story, 13,650 square foot center includes four team locker rooms, a locker room for referees, home and visitor showers, a commercial-quality laundry room, restrooms and a training room. The second floor features a weight-training room, multi-purpose team room, coaches’ offices, restrooms and a 1,800 square foot observation balcony that overlooks the pitch. Below the balcony is an external permanent 550 seat structure. Portable stands can also be brought in to surround Warrior Field, which features two electronic rugby-specific scoreboards.
“Having the privilege and opportunity to utilize the Anderson Rugby Complex has been an unbelievable experience. The facility is arguably one of the best rugby complexes in the country and by far the best facility I have had the opportunity to use. The team has an incredible respect for the complex and as stewards of the facility, we attempt to leave it in better shape than we received it. From the locker room, multi-purpose room, turf pitch and grass pitch, the complex offers us an unparalleled rugby experience. It is also offers a great game day experience with pristine grass, bleacher seating and overhanging balcony. Every day the team looks forward to practicing at ARC and being able to utilize its awesome benefits.” - ‘15 Men’s Rugby Captain Collum Magee

2014-15 GAME RECAPS ARMY 17
SEPT. 6, 2014 | HAMDEN, CONN.
Black Knights Fall to Quinnipiac in Season Opener Hamden, Conn. - The sixth-ranked Black Knights women’s rugby team opened up the season Saturday afternoon, falling to 11th-ranked Quinnipiac 50-17. The game was scoreless through the 17th minute of play, until Quinnipiac’s Elisa Cuellar opened up the scoring, giving the team the early advantage. They added another score to take a 12-0 lead moments later. The Bobcats would jump out to a 24-0 advantage, capitalizing on an Army turnover and an ignited offense. Army got on the board late in the first half, when Allison Wilson scored her first try of the season, and the conversion from Ari Efaw was successful. The Black Knights, however, headed into the break trailing 24-7.

Quinnipiac continued its offensive display, earning a 43-7 advantage. Carissa Penky added the team’s second score of the afternoon, the Black Knights, however, were unsuccessful on the conversion. Pekny added the final score for the Black Knights, and the team was again unsuccessful on the conversion. The Bobcats added the final punch when freshman Megan Johnson recorded her first career try in the fifth minute, solidifying her team’s 50-17 victory. Army will look to rebound on Saturday, Sept. 13 when they host conference rival Norwich in their first home action of the season.

NORWICH 39
Army Drops Home Opener to Norwich
as they walked away with the 39-5 victory.
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army women’s rugby team fell to Norwich 39-5 in its rain-soaked home-opener from Anderson Rugby Complex.
“We were a little naïve heading into contact, we weren’t protecting the ball well and we didn’t maintain possession for any length of time,” LeClerc said. “Turnovers were costly, as they are in any position based game, but we just couldn’t hold on to the ball.”
“On a day like today, it was just difficult to handle the ball,” head coach Bill LeClerc said. “The conditions made it difficult to play the way we wanted to play.” It was all Norwich in the first half as the Cadets got the scoring started less than four minutes into the game to take the 5-0 lead. With 25:00 remaining on the clock, the Cadets scored again to go up 10-0.
With the loss, the women drop to 0-2 on the season. They’ll hit the road next week for a matchup with Connecticut. Game time is set for 6 p.m. on Sept. 20 from Mansfield, Conn.
Norwich would add two more scores though with 18:18 to go to take the 20-0 lead. Army’s defense stood strong, however. With just minutes to go, the Black Knights came out of a scrum which had Norwich threatening, sending the teams into the break with Norwich leading 20-0. The Black Knights’ defense picked up right where it left off in the second half, making key stops and keeping the Cadets from scoring through 15 minutes of play. The Cadets, however, would go on to score to more tries and add two successful conversions to get up by a score of 39-0 with just over 10 minutes to play. Army responded when Kate Roose blocked a kick attempt by a Norwich player. Roose scooped up the ball on the left side of the pitch and ran untouched for the score. Arianna Efaw missed on the conversion attempt. With the score 39-5 and just minutes remaining on the clock, Allison Wilson gave the Black Knights hope, grabbing the ball in Army territory and making a nice run, eluding three Norwich defenders and brining the ball into the Cadets’ territory. Norwich was able to regain control of the ball with time running off the clock, but Army’s defense remained strong, preventing the cadets from another score. However, the Norwich offense proved too much for Army

STORRS, CONN. - The Army women’s rugby team recorded its first win of the season, defeating the Huskies of the University of Connecticut 53-5.
Allison Wilson and Roose would each add a score to send the Black Knights into the break leading 29-5. Army picked up right where it left off in the second half, with Allie McDonald scoring in the 49th minute and Rebecca Stipp adding a try in the 56th with Peky adding the conversion following Stipp’s score.
“This was a much needed win for us,” head coach Bill LeClerc said. “We are looking forward to building on this win and improving throughout the season.” The Black Knights dominated from the start, as Ashley Mohr scored in the first minute of action and Carissa Pekny was successful on the conversion, giving Army the 7-0 lead. Less than eight minutes later, Kate Roose would score her first of four tries on the evening, giving the Black Kinghts the 12-0 lead. Roose scored again in the 17th minute and Pekny’s kick was good, making it 19-0 in favor of the Black Knights. The Huskies would score their only points of the game in the 25th min-

Roose closed out her scoring onslaught with a try in the 64th minute, followed by the final score from Kirsten Redmon 70th minute and a successful kick from Penky. “It is a pleasure to have been her at UConn,” head officer representative Lt. Col. Steve Henderson said. “They have been great hosts and have a beautiful campus. The girls have really come together to play as a team this past week.” The win is the first for the Black Knights, who improve to 1-0 on the season. The last three minutes was pleasing to see that we could still come back after basically tanking the first 30 minutes. The girls never stopped trying and there was some positive stuff to take from the game.
At halftime, Army led 17-8, but was unable to keep the Yellow Jackets off the board in the final 40 minutes.
With the loss, the Black Knights fall to 1-3 on the season. They’ll return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they host Northeastern at noon.
American International opened up scoring in the 10th minute, successfully converting on a penalty kick to take the 3-0 lead. Six minutes later, Kate Roose added a try and Carissa Pekny was successful on the conversion, giving the Black Knights the 12-3 lead. AIC answered in the 26th minute, cutting the Army lead to 12-8. With just over six minutes to go in the half, Pekny picked off an AIC pass and ran the length of the field before being brought down just shy of the goal line. Allison Wilson punched the ball in for the score and sent Army into the break with a 17-8 lead. The Yellow Jackets came out strong in the second half, scoring in the 54th minute and converting on the kick to cut the Army lead to 17-15. They would go on to add three more scores to get up by 32-17. With just two minutes to go in regulation, Pekny turned the momentum in Army’s favor, scoring a try to cut the Yellow Jackets’ lead to 32-22. In extra time, Wilson added her second of the game and Pekny converted the kick, but AIC walked away with the 32-29 victory. It’s an 80-minute game, not a 40-minute game. If it was, we would have been okay,” head coach Bill LeClerc said. “We started well in the second half but we didn’t finish the opportunities we created. “It was what we really needed, a good, solid 80-minute performance,” head coach Bill LeClerc said. “We worked on a lot of things running wise, etc. that worked out well. I thought our ball movement was really good, our ball placement, our ball retention were all good. “We need to tidy up the back of the scrum against Norwich, who will put us under a lot of pressure there. But today was satisfying. A lot of people stepped up and it was a good day.” Army will look to ride the momentum of Sunday’s victory as they hit the road for a tough, three-game road trip. They’ll face Norwich on Oct. 11 for a rematch of their early season loss to the Cadets. 2015 MEDIA GUIDE
NCVWRA ARMY WOMEN’S RUGBY ONE OF EIGHT FOUNDING MEMBERS OF NCVWRA WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army women’s rugby program is one of eight founding members of the National Collegiate Varsity Women’s Rugby Association (NCVWRA). Army, Bowdoin, Brown, Central Washington, Harvard, Norwich, Quinnipiac and West Chester are the founding members of the organization, which focuses on the promotion and development of varsity women’s rugby. Membership is open to NCAA schools in all divisions who commit to sponsor women’s rugby on the varsity level. It is the first collegiate organization of its kind. The NCVWRA looks to serve as the primary point of contact with the NCAA on issues related to intercollegiate women’s rugby. In addition, it will be a resource for athletic administrators considering elevating their current women’s rugby clubs or creating new varsity programs. The association will also look to coordinate the actions of its members to ensure the smoothest transition from club to varsity status. The NCAA currently classifies women’s rugby as an emerging sport. “I am very excited and proud to have the United States Military Academy as a founding member of NCVWRA,” said Army athletic director Boo Corrigan. “As an emerging sport, it is extremely important for women’s rugby to have an organization that is focused on the promotion of the game. With the elevation of our women’s rugby team to the varsity level, we are privileged to be a resource for other universities that wish to do the same.”
