USA RUGBY Founded in 1975, USA Rugby is the national governing body for the sport of rugby in America, and a Full Sport Member of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the International Rugby Board (IRB).

Currently headquartered in Boulder, Colo., USA Rugby is charged with developing the game on all levels and has over 115,000 active members. USA Rugby oversees four national teams, multiple collegiate and high school All-American sides, and an emerging Olympic development pathway for elite athletes. USA Rugby is governed by a nine member Board of Directors, a Congress representing the membership and a professional staff headed by a CEO. In 2009, Rugby returned to the Olympic movement. In 2011, USA Rugby became a full sport member of the United States Olympic Committee and is now recognized by the USOC as the governing body for Rugby in the USA. Rugby Sevens will now be played at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining the qualities of body, will and mind in a balanced whole. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example, social responsibility and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles. The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced in accordance with Olympism and its values. The Olympic Movement is overseen by the International Olympic Committee. The IOC is supported by International Federations that govern each sport on a global level, National Olympic Committees that oversee Olympic sport as a whole in each nation, and National Federations that administer each sport at the national level (called National Governing Bodies in the United States). Forty-seven NGBs are members of the USOC.USA Rugby is also a member of the International Rugby Board, one of the 35 International Federations who are members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC.) The United States Military Academy is renowned because of its historic and distinguished reputation as a military academy, and as a leading, progressive institution of higher education. Made legendary in books and movies produced over the years, the Academy’s “Long Gray Line” of graduates includes some of our nation’s most famous and influential men: Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, George S. Patton, Omar Bradley, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower and Norman Schwarzkopf. Because of this superb education and leadership experience, West Point graduates historically have been sought for high level civilian and military leadership positions. Their numbers include two U.S. presidents, several ambassadors, state governors, legislators, judges, cabinet members, educators, astronauts and corporate executives. Today, West Point continues to provide hundreds of young men and women the unique opportunity to develop physically, ethically and intellectually while building a foundation for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career as an Army officer in the service of our nation. Cadets have much more responsibility in running the Academy than students in most other colleges or universities. It adds to the leadership experience. Cadets succeed at West Point because of the support they receive from the staff and faculty. After all, many faculty members are West Point graduates and understand the challenge cadets face on a daily basis. They also serve as ideal role models, showing cadets what Army life is like. ULYSSESS. S. GRANT ULYSSES GRANT

Robert E. Lee ’29 The Academy’s ninth Superintendent (1852-55), Lee was a model cadet during his four years at West Point. He graduated second in his class and never earned a single demerit during his four years at the Academy. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was selected to serve as Commanding General of the Army, but instead resigned his commission and was named GeneralIn-Chief of the Confederate Army from 1861 to 1865. Lee’s surrender to Ulysses S. Grant (USMA 1843), at Appomattox Court House, Va., ended the Civil War. Fort Lee, Va., was named in his honor. Ulysses S. Grant ’43 Grant distinguished himself during the Civil War at the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863; his victory secured control of the Mississippi River for the Union. President Abe Lincoln later appointed him Commanding General of the Army in March 1864. On April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House, Va., Robert E. Lee (USMA 1829) surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to him, ending the Civil War. Grant later served as the 18th President of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Today, his image graces the $50 bill. George W. Goethals ’80 Goethals became an architect and was builder of the Panama Canal, 1904 to 1914. John J. Pershing ’86 Considered the second most senior officer in Army history, behind only George Washington, Pershing served as commander of the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. The two-millionplus troops of the AEF made a decisive contribution to the defeat of Imperial Germany. Pershing’s abilities as a leader distinguished him among European commanders, and through repeated successes on the battlefield, promoted American prestige around the world. He served as Army Chief of Staff in 1921, and was named General of the Armies of the United States upon his retirement in 1924. Douglas MacArthur ’03 After World War I, MacArthur returned to West Point to serve as the Academy’s 31st Superintendent from 1919 to 1922. During that time, he was responsible for

the revitalization of the Academy. He was later promoted to General of the Army and served as Supreme Allied Commander in the Pacific Theater during World War II. During that time, he received the Medal of Honor for leading defense preparation and operations on the Philippine Islands. He later served as Supreme Allied Commander, Japan, and as commander, United Nations Command in the Far East. He was one of only five officers to be promoted to General of the Army (five stars).

Alexander M. Haig Jr. ’47 Haig served as Chief of Staff to President Richard Nixon from 1973 to 1974; Supreme Allied Commander in Europe 1974 to 1979; President of United Technologies Corporation 1980 to 1981 and Secretary of State during the Reagan administration from 1981 to 1982.

James V. Kimsey ’62 Kimsey was the founding chairman of America Online, and was named chairman emeritus in 1996. He founded the Kimsey Foundation in 1996.

George S. Patton Jr. ’09 “Old Blood and Guts,” Patton was one of the most colorful commanders in the Army. During World War II the famed commander of the 2nd Armored Division and later the Third Army displayed courage and daring as prominently as the pair of ivory handled revolvers he wore. Patton accomplished one of the most remarkable feats in military history in December 1944, when he quickly turned the Third Army northward to reinforce the Allied southern flank against the German attack in the Battle of the Bulge. The General’s doctrine of aggressive employment of massive armor forces continue to prove themselves in combat arenas around the world.

Frank Borman ’50 An astronaut from 1962 to 1970, Borman commanded the first circumlunar flight of the earth. He later served as President of Eastern Airlines.

Omar N. Bradley ’15 During his career, Bradley earned a reputation as one of the best infantry commanders in World War II. He commanded the 82nd Airborne and 28th Infantry Divisions before going on to command the 1st Army and the 12th Army Group. After the war he served as Army Chief of Staff from 1948 to 1949 and served as the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1949 to 1953. He was the last Army officer to be promoted to General of the Army (five stars), and the Bradley fighting vehicle is named in his honor. Dwight D. Eisenhower ’15 During World War II, Eisenhower served as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces Europe from 1943 to 1944, during which he led the D-Day invasion of Europe. During that time, he was promoted to General of the Army (five stars). After the war, he served as Army Chief of Staff from 1945 to 1948 and was named President of Columbia University in 1948. He served as the 34th President of the United States from

Fidel V. Ramos ’50 One of the Academy’s international cadets, Ramos served as a Philippine Army officer after graduation. He eventually became the country’s military Chief of Staff and later Secretary of National Defense. He also served as President of the Republic of the Philippines from 1992 to 1998. Edwin E. Aldrin ’51 An astronaut from 1963 to 1972, Aldrin participated in the first manned lunar landing with Michael Collins (USMA ’52) and was the second man to walk on the moon. Edward White ’52 An astronaut from 1962 to 1967, White was the first man to walk in space and was one of the three astronauts killed in the Apollo I disaster in 1967. H. Norman Schwarzkopf ’56 As Commander-in-Chief, United States Central Command from 1988 to 1991, Schwarzkopf’s command ultimately responded to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait with the largest U.S. deployment since the Vietnam War, including portions of the Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps as well as units from dozens of nations around the world. After retiring, Schwartzkopf received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Peter M. Dawkins ’59 Dawkins was Cadet Brigade Commander (First Captain of the U.S. Corps of Cadets) as a senior and became the third Heisman

Michael W. Krzyzewski ’69 Krzyzewski served as head basketball coach at West Point from 1974 to 1979 before assuming similar duties at Duke University. Krzyzewski has led the Blue Devils to three national championships and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in October 2001. He coached the U.S. at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. MARTIN E. DEMPSEY ’74 General Martin E. Dempsey serves as the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In this capacity, he serves as the principal military adviser to the President, the Secretary of Defense and the National Security Council. By law, he is the nation’s highest-ranking military officer. Prior to becoming Chairman, the general served as the Army’s 37th Chief of Staff. Dempsey served as the Deputy Commander and then Acting Commander of U.S. Central Command. Before becoming Chief of Staff of the Army, he commanded U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command.

Raymond T. Odierno ‘76 Odierno commanded the 4th Infantry Division during the fall of 2003 which, along with Special Forces units, captured Saddam Hussein in December of that year. Odierno helped plan and coordinate the raid that netted Iraq’s fallen dictator. He currently serves as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. Robert S. Kimbrough ’89 Kimbrough was named one of 11 new astronaut candidates by NASA in May 2004. Kimbrough ranks among Army Baseball’s career leaders in saves. A veteran of Desert Storm, he currently works for NASA in Houston as a flight simulation engineer and participated in a space shuttle mission in 2009.

Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen, Jr. became the 59th Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on July 17, 2013. Caslen graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1975. He earned master’s degrees from Long Island University and Kansas State University. Previous to this assignment, he served as the Chief of the Office of Security Cooperation-Iraq. His prior deployments and assignments include serving as the commander of the Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., the command that oversees the Command and General Staff College and 17 other schools, centers, and training programs located throughout the United States; commanding general of the 25th Infantry Division (Light) and commanding general of the Multi-National Division-North during Operation Iraqi Freedom; commandant of cadets for the U.S. Military Academy; deputy director for the War on Terrorism, J-5, The Joint Staff; assistant division commander (maneuver), 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized); chief of staff, 10th Mountain Division (Light); chief of staff, Combined Joint Task Force Mountain during Operation Enduring Freedom; commander, 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault); chief of staff, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault); senior brigade C2 Observer/Controller, Operations Group, Joint Readiness Training Center; commander, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division (Light); executive officer to the deputy commander in Haiti during Operation Uphold Democracy; J-3 in Honduras for Joint Task Force Bravo; brigade operations officer, 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault); executive officer, 2nd Battalion, 187th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) during Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Caslen’s awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Legion of Merit with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters. He has earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, and is Airborne, Air Assault, and Ranger qualified. Caslen is married with three children.

Brigadier General John (J.T.) Thomson became the 75th Commandt of Cadets this August. He hails from Tyler, Texas, and earned his commission as a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery in 1986. His initial assignment was with the 6th Battalion, 41st Field Artillery (M109A2, 155mm SP) in Kitzingen, Germany, in direct support to the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division from 1987 to 1990. In 1990, BG Thomson was assigned to the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Nuremburg, Germany. From 1992 to 1994, he served as Operations Officer for the 1st Armored Division Artillery in Baumholder, Germany, and then later commanded Bravo Battery, 4th Battalion, 29th Field Artillery (M109A2, 155mm SP) in direct support to the 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division. Following battery command, he served as a Tactical Officer for the U.S. Corps of Cadets at West Point until 1997. From June 1998 to June 2003, BG Thomson was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division (M) at Fort Hood, Texas. BG Thomson commanded the 2nd Battalion, 4th Field Artillery (MLRS) of the 214th Field Artillery Brigade at Fort Sill, Okla., from June 2003 to June 2005. Following battalion command, he served on the Joint Staff as an advisor to the Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, extensively interacting and traveling with the U.S. Department of State on national security affairs. From May 2007 to Feb. 2008, he served as the Executive Officer to the Commanding General of Multi-National Corps, Iraq. He later headed the Commander’s Initiatives Group for Multi-National Forces-Iraq from Oct. 2008 to Jan. 2009, and then served as Executive Officer to the MNF-I Commanding General from April 2009 to July 2009. BG Thomson commanded the 41st Fires Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas, from Oct. 2009 to July 2011. Following brigade command, he became the Director of the Chief’s Coordination Group (CCG) for the 38th Chief of Staff of the Army at Headquarters, Department of the Army through March 2013. In April 2013, he assumed duties as Deputy Commander for the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo. BG Thomson earned a B.S. degree in computer engineering from the U.S. Military Academy in 1986 and a M.S. degree in Counseling and Leader Development from Long Island University in 1995. BG Thomson and his wife, Holly, have two sons, Tyler and Parker.

Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen, Jr. became the 59th Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on July 17, 2013. Brigadier General Timothy E. Trainor, Ph.D., became the Dean of the Academic Board at the United States Military Academy in the summer of 2010. He previously served as professor and head of the Department of Systems Engineering at West Point where he taught courses in engineering management, systems engineering and decision analysis. Trainor graduated with a Bachelor of Science from West Point in 1983 and entered the Engineer Branch of the U.S. Army. As an engineering officer, Trainor has served in operational assignments around the world, including Germany, Honduras, Fort Bragg, N.C., Fort Riley, Kans. and Sarajevo, Bosnia. Trainor has a Master of Business Administration from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke and a doctorate degree in industrial engineering from North Carolina State University. He is a member of the Military Applications Society of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences the Military Operations Research Society, the American Society for Engineering Management and the American Society of Engineering Education. He is a past president of Epsilon Mu Eta, the national Engineering Management Honor Society. Trainor is also a member of the Board of Fellows for the David Crawford School of Engineering at Norwich University. As an analyst, Trainor helped develop the Installation Status Report that provides the Army a standardized means to assess infrastructure and environmental conditions on installations to support resource allocation decisions. He has applied decision analysis methods in completing an organizational analysis of the Army’s Installation Management Agency and in assessing defense security cooperation programs. Trainor deployed to Basrah, Iraq in the summer of 2007 and worked with the British-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in helping the provincial Iraqi leaders improve their infrastructure revitalization plans. Trainor is married to Col. Donna Brazil, a 1983 graduate of West Point, who is a professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at the Academy. They have a daughter Cory, who is currently attending West Point, and two sons; Danny and Zach.

Now in the midst of his fourth year as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at the Army West Point, Boo Corrigan has guided the Black Knights to incredible successes on the fields of friendly strife, victories over Navy, surpassed ambitious fundraising goals, upgraded several facilities and added three varsity sports, all while cadet-athletes continued to raise the bar academically. Corrigan was named Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on Feb. 1, 2011 and the short time since, Army has won the “Star” series against Navy, claimed the overall competition against the Midshipmen, added Academic All-American certificates, raised the annual fund by nearly $3 million, increased the “For Us All Capital Campaign by $55 million,” completed fundraising on a new lacrosse building and established 10new program endowments. Under Corrigan’s leadership, Army has added women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s rugby to its offering of sports with nearly a quarter of the Corps of Cadets, around 1,000, competing in varsity sports under the athletic department. In addition to the additional sport offerings, a massive state-of-the art videoboard was added to Tate Rink, a press box was included at Doubleday Field at Johnson Stadium, the ticket office was upgraded and moved to a more fanfriendly location in Michie Stadium and work will begin the fall on a lacrosse building that will include locker rooms, team rooms, weight room, athletic training space and much more for both the men’s and women’s lacrosse programs. A branding campaign that started in 2011 at Michie Stadium will continue with additions to Christl Arena this fall. Corrigan has strengthened and expanded Army Athletics’ relationships in several key areas. In his tenure, Army has secured a new apparel agreement with Nike, a new pouring rights contract with Coke and bringing in the Aspire Group to enhance ticket sales and better serve Army season ticket holders. Corrigan also crafted the Team Army concept, a comprehensive plan designed to add significant value to Army’s corporate sponsorships while maintaining the tradition of West Point Athletics. In his first full three years at West Point, Corrigan has overseen a program that owns 11 Patriot League regular season or tournament championships and sent eight teams to the NCAA postseason. Thirty-three cadets have earned a major award from their conference, Last season, Corrigan led Army Athletics to its first star series victory since 1996, going 12-11 in star competitions against Navy. It was the 12th victory in the series for the Academy. West Point went 18-13 overall against the Mids

during the year and has a 34-29-1 mark versus Navy in the last two seasons. Army finished a very successful campaign in 2013-14 with an overall record of 235-173-7 for a .575 winning percentage, the highest mark since 2004-05. In 2013-14, the Black Knights brought home league titles in men’s tennis, baseball and women’s basketball. Army won regular season titles in men’s tennis and baseball, while the women’s hoops squad won the league tournament and was a 13th seed in the NCAA Tournament. Ten of Army’s squads participated in Patriot League postseason, while rifle earned an NCAA berth for the 11th-straight season. Army collected more than 100 all-league citations in 2012-13 alone. Hockey’s Cheyne Rocha and lacrosse’s Brendan Buckley each captured the Senior CLASS Award in their respective sports, making Army the only school in the nation to have multiple winners in 2012-13. During the 2012-13 season, Army teams combined to post an overall record of 236-183-8 for a .562 winning percentage. The winter sports programs had their best season in five years as the women’s basketball team won the Patriot League regular season title, the men’s basketball team posted its first winning season in 28 years and the rifle squad advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 10th consecutive season. It was also a great year in the competition against fellow service academies. Army split the season series versus Navy, 16-16-1, marking the best winning percentage against the Mids (.500) since 2004-05. The Black Knights owned a 4-2-1 record against Air Force, improving the record to 2018-2 (.525) versus service academy foes in 2012-13. Cadet-athletes have continued to thrive in the classroom under Corrigan’s watch. In his three full years, Army has boasted 12 Academic All-Americans, including seven first-team selections. Lacrosse’s Brendan Buckely became the first Army athlete to capture Academic All-American of the Year honors in 2012. In 2011, the Black Knights’ football team boasted two first-team CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, a first for the program since 1957. Since the start of the 2011-12 season, Army boasts six Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year, including Buckley, a two-time overall men’s winner. During the 2013-14 season, Army registered five Academic All-American selections. Twenty of Army’s 24 NCAA programs scored above the national average in the 2013 NCAA APR report. The men’s cross country and wrestling teams earned public recognition for finishing in the top 10 percent of their respective sport. The cross country squad boasted a perfect score of 1,000. In addition, former football standout Andrew Rodriguez, Class of 2012, became the first Army player to win the National Football Foundation’s Willam V. Campbell Trophy, which is presented annually to the nation’s top football scholar-athlete. Rodriguez later was honored with the Amateur Athletic Union’s James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the country. He was the first Army player to receive the award since 1946 and was just the third player in history (Peyton Manning, Tim Tebow) to win both the Campbell Trophy and Sullivan Award. Army has been the focus of national attention since Corrigan’s arrival. He was instrumental in supporting the CBS documentary, “Game of Honor,” that chronicled the Black Knights’ 2011 football season leading up to its annual showdown with arch-rival Navy. Not only was the

two-hour program broadcast to a national audience on Showtime, but also won the Emmy Award for Best Sports Documentary. The Army football team was also the focus of a behind-the-scenes book titled, “Soldiers First,” written by New York Times writer Joe Drape. In addition to his duties at West Point, Corrigan has been an active leader in the Patriot League, serving as chairman of the conference’s Broadband Committee. Corrigan, who was the senior associate athletic director for external affairs at Duke University starting in August 2008, brings a wealth of leadership to his post. He is a proven administrator with 18 previous years of experience in all areas of revenue generation, external affairs, staff management and leadership. Corrigan’s chief responsibilities at Duke included the oversight of the Blue Devil corporate partnerships and the Marketing, Promotions, Ticket, Internet Operations, Sports Information and Video Services departments. In only two years at Duke, Corrigan was responsible for the negotiation of multi-media rights to ISP. A supervisor of the 2009 NCAA Champion women’s tennis and 2010 NCAA Champion men’s lacrosse programs, Corrigan was a part of three NCAA Championships at Duke in just two seasons. He served as a member of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Rules committee and the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Committee, while serving on the Executive Budget Committee at Duke. Prior to arriving at Duke in August of 2008, he oversaw Notre Dame’s corporate relations and marketing as an associate athletic director for five years. During his stint at Notre Dame, Corrigan spearheaded the redesign of its official athletics website and creation of 15-20 hours of original video content weekly. That resulted in a 35 percent increase in page views and unique users. Corrigan also worked directly with ISP Sports, CSTV, and NBC Sports from a sales and marketing standpoint. Before joining the staff at Notre Dame, Corrigan spent nearly three years as the associate athletic director for marketing at the United States Naval Academy. He was responsible for turning the marketing department from a deficit to profit in his first year with full budget responsibility for the department. Corrigan also was intimately involved with the re-branding of the Annual Giving Campaign (The Blue and Gold), which led to an increase of 75 percent year over year donations. His collegiate experience also includes a stint as assistant director of marketing at Florida State from 1992-95. Corrigan is a 1990 University of Notre Dame graduate with a degree in economics. He is married to the former Kristen Aceto, a former field hockey and lacrosse player at the University of Virginia who also earned a master’s degree from the school. The couple has three children, Finley, Tre and Brian. He is the youngest of seven children of Gene and Lena Corrigan.

Given by Lee R. Anderson, class of 1961, and Penny Anderson, the Anderson Rugby Complex broke ground in the fall of 2005 and the $8.35 million project was completed in May of 2007. The Anderson Rugby Complex is positioned alongside the Hudson River, just north of West Point’s Shea Stadium. The facility boasts a state of the art all-weather practice pitch alongside the main natural turf competition field, which are floodlit, in addition to the center. The first floor of the two-story, 13,650 square foot center includes four team locker rooms, a locker room for referees, home and visitor showers, a commercial-quality laundry room, restrooms and a training room. The second floor features a weight-training room, multi-purpose team room, coaches’ offices, restrooms and a 1,800 square foot observation balcony that overlooks the pitch. Below the balcony is an external permanent 550 seat structure. Portable stands can also be brought in to surround Warrior Field, which features two electronic rugby-specific scoreboards.

Michael Mahan, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, is in his second stint as men’s rugby head coach. Mahan, one of the nation’s most successful coaches, has served both the men’s and women’s rugby teams for more than 25 years. The fall of 2014 was one of the most successful in program history as the team posted an unblemished 8-0 regular season record in their first year as a member of the Army Athletic Association. Mahan helped guide the team to wins over nationally ranked opponents such as Penn State, Kutztown and Air Force and led Army to the Rugby East title.

Championship Final Four, Mahan was the head coach for 10 of those seasons. In addition to his rugby coaching duties, Mahan served as an Airborne, Ranger and Infantryman for 21 years of active duty service. Mahan has worked at West Point as a military instructor, senior vice president with the Association of Graduates and coach. He retired from the military with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Two of Mahan’s former players were among the four Army-wide officers who were selected for the rank of Lieutenant General this year. In addition, he sat on the Executive Board of USA Rugby for three years. Mahan graduated from West Point with an engineering degree and later collected his master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mahan and his wife Dorothy, a marriage and family therapist, reside in Cornwall, N.Y. The couple has a son, Matthew of Boston and a granddaughter, Madeline.

The Black Knights were invited to the ACRC Bowl Series and dropped a 53-19 decision against second-ranked Life to conclude a historic fall. Mahan was named the Rugby East Coach of the Year for his outstanding efforts and coached eight Black Knights to All-Rugby East recognition. Captain Collum Magee was named the Forward of the Year and landed on the first team. He was joined by Andrew Fargo, Thomas Del Pino, David Huff and vice-captain Logan Pearce. John Banarhall earned second team honors and Greg Walker and Peter Basnight garnered honorable mention recognition. Magee, Fargo and Huff were also name to the All-ACRC squads with Magee earning MVP status. Mahan guided the Army men’s team as head coach from 1988-2002 and then returned in 2013. He was the first head coach of the Army women’s team in 2003 and served as women’s coach emeritus from 2005-07. He also led the Monterey Bay Mayhem for two seasons, spent three seasons as the head coach of the Combined Services U-25 National Team and four years as head coach of the U.S. Army National Team. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Army in 1980. During Mahan’s 15 years as a head coach, he led his squads to 10 Collegiate National Championship Final Fours and none of his team’s finished below ninth in the country. Major Mike Ziegelhofer, a native of Lexington, Ohio, enters his third season with the Army West Point men’s rugby program. He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and life sciences and receiving his commission as an armor officer in 2004. MAJ Ziegelhofer attended Columbia University in 2013, earning a master’s degree Organizational Psychology. He is a graduate of the Armor Officer Basic Course and Maneuver Captain’s Career Course. Major Ziegelhofer has served as a platoon leader, Aide-de-Camp, and Troop Commander in both garrison and combat operations. As a platoon leader with the 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Fort Irwin, CA, he deployed to Iraq in support of

Operation Iraqi Freedom III. He then served as the Aide-de-Camp to the commanding general of the National Training Center at Fort Irwin and to the commanding general of the Combined Services Training Command in Kabul, Afghanistan. In his most previous duty assignment, Major Ziegelhofer commanded Lightning Troop, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and the Regimental Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, deploying to Operation New Dawn in Iraq from 20102011. Major Ziegelhofer currently serves as the Tactical Officer of company F-3 at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Major Ziegelhofer’s military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Iraq Campaign Medal with three Campaign Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and NATO Medal. He has also earned the Combat Action Badge and the Air Assault Badge.

ASSISTANT COACH | SECOND SEASON | USMA, 2004 Major Brent Pafford enters his second year with the men’s rugby program. Major Pafford serves as an Instructor of Mechanical Engineering and an assistant Rugby Coach at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Brent played Rugby for four years at the United States Military Academy form 2000-2004. He has served in the Army for over 10 years since graduating from West Point in 2004, with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. MAJ Pafford also holds a Master’s of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.

1st Squadron, 6th Cavalry regiment to Kirkuk, Iraq in support of the Presidential Surge during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He moved to Kansas in 2009, where he commanded Avenger Troop, 1st Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment in the 1st Infantry Division. In the winter of 2010 CPT Pafford deployed with Avenger Troop to Taji, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn.

Commissioned as an Aviation Officer, his former assignments include Air Cavalry Platoon Leader, and Distribution Platoon Leader with 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment in Fort Carson, Colorado. While at Fort Carson he deployed as an assistant operations officer with

CPT Ian Folau joined the men’s rugby coaching staff in 2012.

A 2006 graduate of the United States Military Academy, Folau earned his bachelor’s of science degree in systems engineering. Folau was a member of Army’s men’s rugby team from 2001-2006. He also played for clubs in North Carolina from 2010-11 and in Germany with from 2011-2012.

As a member of the United States Army, Folau served in Germany and Afghanistan from February 2007 to June 2009, before becoming a company commander and security and intelligence chief at Fort Bragg. In July of 2012 he returned to West Point where he now serves as an assistant professor of German and human resources manager in the Foreign Languages department. Folau was born in Frankfurt, Germany and graduated from high school in Seoul, Korea. He is fluent in German and has studied Samoan, French, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Dutch and Hebrew. In 2012, he earned his master’s degree in Arts, German Studies from Middlebury College.

Men’s Rugby Opens Spring with 28-16 Victory Over UMass WEST POINT, N.Y. - Kicking off the spring portion of the 2014-15 season, the Army men’s rugby team posted a late 14-point run to claim a 28-16 victory over regional foe UMass from Foley Athletic Center at West Point. Army got on the board first when sophomore Andrew Fargo muscled down the far side of the field to put the Black Knights up by a score of 5-0. Dom Larkin converted the kick and the Black Knights took an early 7-0 lead in the fifth minute. UMass answered just three minutes later with its first of two first half penalty kicks, cutting Army’s lead to 7-3. Fargo did it again in the 36th minute with Larkin again succeeding on the points after, putting the Black Knights up 14-3. With stoppage time ticking off the clock in the first half, UMass posted another penalty kick, sending Army into the break with the eight-point advantage. UMass came out strong in the second half, opening play with a penalty kick in the 42nd minute and a try and successful conversion in the 57th minute to take the 16-14 lead. The Black Knights again came up big when it mattered, posting a late second half comeback to claim the victory. In the 68th minute, Jamison Geracci fought his way through the UMass defense to post his first points of the 2015 season. Larkin posted his third conversion of the game, putting Army on top again by a score of 21-16.

The Black Knights will return to action on Saturday, March 28 when they host service academy rival Navy at Anderson Rugby Complex. Rugby’s Andrew Fargo Earns Athlete of the Week Distinction WEST POINT, N.Y. - Posting two first half scores in the Army men’s rugby team’s spring opener, Andrew Fargo led the team to a 28-16 victory from Foley Athletic Complex. For his performance, the sophomore has been tabbed as the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week. Fargo opened up the scoring in the fifth minute, muscling his way through the UMass defense for the try and giving the Black Knights an early advantage. He closed out Army’s first half offense with a score in the 36th minute and helped the Black Knights to a 14-6 advantage at the half. Army ultimately earned the 28-16 win, improving to 9-1 on the season to remain perfect in regular season action during the 2014-15 campaign. This is the first Athlete of the Week nod for Fargo who garnered All-Rugby East first team and All-American Collegiate Rugby Conference first team recognition at the conclusion of the fall season. He posted 20 points in his nine starts during the fall, earning tries against Penn State, Iona, Buffalo and Wheeling Jesuit.

In stoppage time, plebe Thomas Del Pino added a score and a drop kick conversion to solidify the 28-16 win for Army.

Fargo and the Black Knights will return to the pitch at Anderson Rugby Complex on Saturday, March 28 when they host service academy rival Navy in a 1 p.m. matchup. That game is slated to be broadcast on Knight Vision.

With the victory the Black Knights move to 9-1 on the season in 15s play. They remain undefeated in regular season action with the only loss coming to No. 2 Life in the American Collegiate Rugby Conference Bowl Series.

Army Claims Four Leaf Tournament Title, Blanks Five Opponents NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Army men’s rugby team posted a dominant performance in the 12th Annual Four Leaf Tournament, claiming the tournament title with five victories. Army blanked each of its five opponents, earning wins over Seton Hall, Loyola, American, Fairfield and Stony Brook. Army kicked off the morning with a contest against Seton Hall, earning the 37-0 victory on the snow covered fields of Randall’s Island. Andrew Yoon kicked off the scoring with a try in the early minutes of the first half, putting the Black Knights up by a score of 5-0. Ben Lemon made it 10-0 just a few minutes later with his first try of the season. Captain Collum Magee put the Black Knights on top by a mark of 15-0, sending his team into the break with the commanding advantage. In the second half, Donald Goff posted a try and Dan Myers succeeded on the conversion to put Army up by a score of 22-0. He was followed by scores from Greg Walker and Ryan Manion, earning the Black Knights the 32-0 advantage. Plebe Alec Smith closed out the Army scoring with his first try of the year, earning Army a 37-0 victory. The Black Knights moved on to game two in poll play, securing a 33-0 victory over Loyola. Kevin Root got the Black Knights on the board first, putting Army up by a mark of 5-0. Andrew Fargo posted back-to-back scores, with Andrew Borer succeeding on both conversions, sending Army into the break with the 19-0 advantage. Logan Buzzard muscled through the Loyola defense for a score to kick off the second half, with Borer again converting the kick. Andy Sullivan followed with a burst of speed down the far side, with Borer posting the conversion to secure Army the 33-0 victory. The Black Knights closed out pool play with a 36-0 victory over American, earning a berth into the semifinal round.

Hayden Cross got the scoring started in the second half with a try to put Army up 31-0 and Alec Smith closed out the day with a try in the waning minutes of the game to secure the 36-0 victory. In pool play the Black Knights blanked all three opponents, outscoring Seton Hall, Loyola and American by an average of 35.3 points to earn the top seed. With three teams opting to forfeit in the semifinal round, Army squared off against Fairfield for the chance to play in the title game where the Black Knights continued their dominance, earning a 47-0 victory. Tyler Glasz got the scoring underway with Borer converting on the kick to give Army the early 7-0 advantage. Root followed with a score of his own, followed by scores from Joe Pervall, Cameron Hargis and Cross as well as four conversions from Borer which sent Army into the break with a 35-0 lead. Hargis and Harrison Farrell each posted scores in the second half, with Borer again succeeding on both conversions, earning Army the 47-0 victory. Moving to the tournament final to face Stony Brook, Army dominated from the beginning, earning a 70-0 victory to claim the Four Leaf title. Magee put the momentum in Army’s favor early on with a bit of flair to earn a try in the opening minute. Myers would successfully boot the conversion to earn Army the 7-0 advantage. The early lead sent Army into a scoring onslaught, where Sullivan, Basnight, Jamison Geracci, Foley and Jake Banarhall each found the try zone with Myers going 3-of-5 on conversions to put the Black Knights up by a score of 38-0. Basnight and Banarhall each posted tries in the final minutes of the half to send Army into the break holding the 50-0 advantage. Army continued its pressure in the second half as Heun put Army up 55-0 in the opening minutes. Yoon, Heun and Root would each post scores in the second half to earn Army the title.

Magee set the pace for Army, putting the team up 5-0 in the early minutes. Luke Heun followed just minutes later with Dom Larkin connecting on the points after, giving the Black Knights the 12-0 lead.

The Black Knights earned a total of five wins on the afternoon, never surrendering a point to their opponents and averaging of 44.6 points per game in the shortened 20-minute halves. With the wins, Army improves to 14-1 overall and 6-0 in the spring season.

Second Half Scoring Lifts No. 5 Army to 41-24 Win Over Navy

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Second half dominance and a late scoring onslaught propelled the fifth-ranked Black Knights to a 41-24 victory over service academy rival Navy on the snow covered turf of Anderson Rugby Complex.

Plebe David Huff used his speed to run in for a try down the Army sideline as Myers converted the kick to give Army the 29-22 lead. With the momentum firmly on the Black Knights’ side, Banarhall scored his third of the afternoon and Myers added the conversion as Army went up by a mark of 36-24.

Jake Banarhall recorded three tries for the Black Knights in the second half to help secure the victory as Army posted 36 second half points. “It was a typical Army-Navy game and they were in every bit of it,” said head coach Mike Mahan. “In the second half the guys just decided they were going to put their foot on the gas and not let up. It was just an awesome second half and they did a great job.”

Andrew Fargo sealed the deal for his top-ranked squad as he earned a score in the waning seconds of regulation to seal the 41-24 victory.

Army got on the board first with captain Collum Magee setting the pace, recording a diving try in the 17th minute to put the Black Knights up by a score of 5-0.

“Beating Navy is all about the intensity and hard work,” said Banarhall. “At the half it was 5-7 and then all of a sudden it got turned up. That’s Army-Navy. It’s just about tight game play and everything is close. No one is willing to lose. We amplified our offense. Our defense was strong in the first half but we didn’t’ really have the possession and that was our main goal. We could outplay the Navy team and we did.”

Navy took the 7-5 advantage in the 30th minute with a try and successful conversion and the Black Knights headed into the break with a two-point deficit.

The win improves Army to a mark of 15-1 overall, having earned seven consecutive wins to open the spring season. They remain unblemished in regular season action.

Andy Sullivan swung the momentum back in favor of the Black Knights when he posted a try in the 41st minute. Dan Myers connected on the kick to put Army up by a mark of 12-7.

The Black Knights will return to action on Saturday, April 4 when they host second-ranked St. Mary’s from Anderson Rugby Complex. That game is slated to be broadcast live on Knight Vision.

The Midshipmen rattled off backto-back scores in the 45th and 53rd minutes to go up by a score of 17-12 before Banarhall returned the favor. The junior recorded scores in the 54th and 57th minutes to earn the 22-17 advantage. Navy would respond in the 66th minute to regain the two-point lead. Men’s Rugby Falls to Second-Ranked St. Mary’s

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- A 26-point effort from second-ranked St. Mary’s was the deciding factor as No. 5 Army fell in its first regular season contest of the year, dropping a 40-12 decision from Anderson Rugby Complex.

Army threatened again with stoppage time ticking off the clock, but could not find the try zone.

The Gales unleashed a dominant offensive and defensive performance in the final 40 points, holding Army off the scoresheet and recording 26 points of their own to hand Army the loss.

With the loss, Army falls to 15-2 on the season, with both losses coming to top-two teams. They drop to 7-1 in the spring. The game was the final regular season contest for the Black Knights who will prepare to host the quarterfinal round of the USA Rugby National Tournament from Anderson Rugby Complex on April 25.

Army trailed by just two at the break, heading into the halftime down by a score of 14-12.

The Black Knights got on the board first, with David Huff recording a try in the eighth minute with a burst of speed down the Army sideline, giving his team the 5-0 advantage. St. Mary’s answered with back-to-back tries and conversions in the 16th and 26th minutes, taking a 14-5 lead. Peter Basnight responded for Army, earning a score in the 36th minute. Daniel Myers added the conversion and Army pulled within two of the Gales lead. In stoppage time of the first half, St. Mary’s lined up for what appeared to be a straightaway penalty kick, but the ball bounced off the uprights and into the waiting hands of the St. Mary’s offense. Huff was able to scramble on the try line and make the tackle, preventing a late St. Mary’s score and sending Army into the break down 14-12. The Gales set the pace early on in the second half, scoring at the 47th minute mark to go up 19-12. Army earned a few scoring chances, coming within feet of the try zone, but was unable to post a score. The St. Mary’s offense kept the pressure on, recording scores in the 66th and 72nd minutes to go up by a mark of 33-12. In the 77th minute, Huff was handed a yellow card following a

Men’s Rugby Opens Season with 49-0 Victory Over Cornell ITHACA, N.Y. – The men’s rugby team opened up the season with a 49-0 victory on the road against Cornell Saturday afternoon. Captain Logan Pearce got the scoring going in the 10th minute of play, scoring on a penalty kick to give the Black Knights the 3-0 advantage. He then followed that up in the 18th minute with a try to make it 8-0.

The North Royalton, Ohio native is one of just eight seniors on a young Black Knights squad that saw the graduation of 13 of its 15 starters from the previous season. Pearce and the Black Knights will return to the pitch Saturday afternoon, playing host to conference rival Penn State in a 1 p.m. matchup from Anderson Rugby Complex. The Black Knights are now 1-0 on the season.

In the 32nd minute of play, Thomas Del Pino scored, followed by Collum Magee in the 37th minute. Pearce was successful on the conversion following Magee’s try and Del Pino would add another in the 39th minute to give the Black Knights the 25-0 advantage at the half. In the 54th minute, David Huff started his own scoring onslaught, scoring on a try. He would score again at the 59th and 61st minutes to give the Black Knights the 42-0 lead. The Black Knights closed out the scoring in the 75th minute when Benjamin Foley added the game’s final try, with Pearce succeeding on the conversion. In their first action of the year, the Black Knights defeated Cornell 49-0. With the win, Army moves to 1-0 on the season. They’ll return home on Sept. 20, for a 1 p.m. matchup with Penn State from Anderson Rugby Complex. Pearce Named AAA Athlete of the Week WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army men’s rugby captain Logan Pearce was honored as the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week, following his stellar performance against Cornell Saturday afternoon. Pearce scored a penalty kick, a try and two successful conversions in the team’s 49-0 victory over Cornell. He registered the game’s first eight points with a penalty kick and a try and successfully completed the conversion attempts following tries from fellow captain Collum Magee and Benjamin Foley.

No. 5 Army Knocks Off No. 6 Penn State in Home Opener WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army men’s rugby team knocked off sixthranked Penn State in the 2014 season opener. The game came down to the final seconds as the Black Knights’ defense was able to hold off a surging Penn State offense. “What a great win, our two veteran forwards Magee and Foley were just huge and they let all the younger guys get in and make plays,” head coach Mike Mahan said. “It was just very exciting and a great win.” Penn State got on the board first, scoring a try but missing on the conversion in the fifth minute to take the 5-0 lead. Army answered in the 17th minute when Andrew Fargo scored and Logan Pearce added the conversion to give Army the 7-5 lead. A penalty kick from Penn State in the 24th minute gave the Nittany Lions the one-point advantage heading into the half. The Black Knights’ offense came out strong in the second half, with freshman David Huff scoring in the 44th minute and Pearce connecting on another conversion to put the Black Knights on top 14-8. Luke Heun added a try in the 59th minute to put Army up 19-8.

Knights in the young season. “I think the team did very well,” Huff said. “Going in there was a lot of speculation about which team would bounce back better. If you looked at the conference rankings they had us at third and Penn State right above us, so we went out there with a chip on our shoulder and did what we had to do to come out with the win.” With the win, the Black Knights improve to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in Rugby East Conference action. “Coming into the game after Cornell we were pretty excited for our victory. We knew they really weren’t that great of competition, but coming into Penn State, they’ve always traditionally been a pretty big rival for us,” said senior captain Collum Magee. “The guys responded unbelievably to a more high-caliber team and we got big plays from everyone, from Ben Foley going down with an injury pretty early but playing through it and David Huff laying down a try as well as Tom Del Pino. It’s a huge win for us early on in the season and we hope to carry this momentum on with us through the rest of the year.” The men will continue conference play, hitting the road to take on St. Bonaventure on Sept. 27. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Penn State kept the pressure on for the remainder of the game, scoring in the 68th minute to pull within four of the Army lead. The Nittany Lions brought the game down to the waning seconds, fighting hard deep in Army territory, but the Black Knights were able to hold on and walk away with the 19-15 victory. “Penn State is a great team and we knew it was going to be a challenge coming in,” said Pearce. “We really rose to the challenge. As a young team we really didn’t know how we were going to respond, but everyone stepped up and played great. The best part is we have a lot more room to improve, so we’re going to be really good going forward.” Ranked sixth in the Canterbury D1A Rugby Top 20 Poll and second in the American Collegiate Rugby Conference Top 20 Poll, the Nittany Lions entered the game as the toughest challenge for the Black

Rugby Remains Perfect with Win Over St. Bonaventure ST BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The Army men’s rugby team claimed its third-straight victory to open the season, defeating the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure 36-22 in a road meeting Saturday evening. The Black Knights started off hot, with Jack Ireland scoring a try in the first minute of action. Twenty minutes later, captain Collum Magee added a try and Dom Mori followed in the 31st minute, with Logan Pearce converting on the kick. In the second half, Mori scored his second of the game. Freshman David Huff added a try in the 72nd minute, followed by Magee’s second of the game in the 79th minute. Pearce converted on both kicks. With the victory, the Black Knights improve to 3-0 on the season claiming victories over Cornell and nationally-ranked Penn State. Army will have a week off before getting back in action, Oct. 11 when they host Iona from Anderson Rugby Complex. They’ll hit the road the following week to play Buffalo before hosting top-ranked Kutztown (Oct. 25) and service academy rival Air Force (Oct. 31).

Rugby Remains Perfect, Escapes Iona 26-19 WEST POINT, N.Y. - Despite a rocky start, the Army men’s rugby team claimed its fourth straight victory to open the 2014 season, defeating Iona 26-19 at Anderson Rugby Complex under the lights on Sunday night. “It was a good game, hard fought,” head coach Mike Mahan said. “We wouldn’t quit and that’s what’s really important.” Iona came out hot, getting up by as much as 12-0 through 37 minutes of play. The nationally ranked Black Knights, however, rebounded, showing their dominance to close out the game. “We came out, unfortunately we might have been a little flat,” Magee said. “Those kids are all New York boys so the opportunity for them to come to West Point and play at Anderson Rugby Complex is a huge deal for them, so we kind of knew they were going to come out tough. We unfortunately didn’t match their toughness, but the team really rallied. I feel like that’s a characteristic of an Army rugby team, we don’t give up, we’re going to play that 80 minutes and we’re going to come out with the W no matter what.” Jacob Banarhall added Army’s first try in the 38th minute, with Logan Pearce converting the kick. Army headed into the break trailing the Gaels 12-7. The Black Knights dominated the second half, with captain Collum Magee muscling through the Iona defense for a score in the 53rd minute. Pearce was again successful on the kick, giving Army the 14-12 lead. Just three minutes later, Andrew Fargo capitalized on a burst of speed, running down the right side of the field, for his second try of the season. Pearce would capitalize on his third conversion of the evening and Army took the 21-12 lead.

“I saw open space and I committed to the inside and then broke outside and just took their fullback to the corner and beat him. It was a good try and it felt good to get it down there.” David Huff added the Black Knights’ final score of the game with an explosion of speed down the right side to give Army the 26-12 lead, as Pearce’s kick bounced off the crossbar. Huff’s first try of the game, was called back after it was deemed that the ball bounced off of his knee before touching the ground. “They kicked the ball and it came right to me, I looked at the opposite No. 10 and he looked at me and I just went to the outside and burned him on the edge,” Huff said. “It felt good because my first one didn’t work out very well.” Iona kept the game interesting, scoring in the 72nd minute to pull within seven points of the Army lead. In more than five minutes of stoppage time play, the Gaels threatened, forcing Army to come up with big defensive stops deep in their own territory. Despite the late pressure from the Gaels, Army walked away with the 26-19 victory. “First of all, we came out with the win, so that’s the important part,” Pearce said. “They came out playing tough and we just weren’t ready for it at this point, but we’re working to get better every week, so you can expect us to come out even harder next week.” With the victory, the men improve to 4-0 on the season and 3-0 in Rugby East Conference action. They’ll continue their toughest stretch of games on the season, traveling to Buffalo on Oct. 18 for a 1 p.m. meeting with the Bulls. They’ll then return home for backto-back high implication games, first facing top-ranked Kutztown on Oct. 25, before battling with service academy rival Air Force.

Just four minutes later Andrew Fargo would add a score, with Logan Pearce converting the kick, giving Army the 12-0 lead. In the 13th minute, Peter Basnight gave the Black Knights the 17-0 lead and John Banarhall followed in the 24th minute, with Pearce converting the kick, to make it 24-0 in favor of Army. Three straight tries from Collum Magee, John Sproul and Jamison Geracci would give Army the 39-0 lead before Buffalo scored in the waning minutes of the first. At the half, the Black Knights owned a 39-7 lead. Pearce opened up the scoring in the second half with a try in the 51st minute. David Huff followed in the 57th minute to put the Black Knights up 49-7. Andrew Borer and Benjamin Lemon scored back-to-back tries in the 57th and 65th minutes and Pearce added his second of the day in the 74th. Borer took over the kicking duties and added his first conversion of the day to put Army up 66-7. Huff closed out the scoring for the Black Knights in the 78th minute and Borer added his second kick of the outing, giving Army the 73-7 lead. No. 6 Army Downs No. 3 Kutztown in Thriller WEST POINT, N.Y. - A try from captain Collum Magee in the 76th minute of the game lifted the sixth-ranked Black Knights to a 34-30 upset victory over third-ranked Kutztown in conference play from Anderson Rugby Complex on Saturday afternoon. Army held the advantage for a majority of the game before Kutztown pounded out 11 unanswered to take the lead. Magee’s try and a successful conversion from vice-captain Logan Pearce gave the Black Knights the edge in the waning minutes. “It’s a great day to play rugby against a great team like Kutztown and everyone really came together and it’s a great victory for us this year,” head coach Mike Mahan said. Peter Basnight, Jake Lachina, Magee and Pearce all factored in on the scoresheet, handing Kutztown its first loss of the season and lifting the Black Knights to a perfect 6-0. Basnight opened the scoring in the second minute with a quick try to get things going and putting the Black Knights up 5-0. Kutztown responded in the 6th and 12th minutes to take the 12-5 lead. A penalty kick from Pearce in the 16th minute brought the Black Knights within three points of the Golden Bears lead, turning the momentum in favor of the young Army squad. Plebe Jake Lachina muscled through for a try in the 24th minute, putting the Black Knights back on top 13-12, but Kutztown would respond just three minutes later, regaining the 19-13 advantage. Magee and Lachina picked up right where they left off to close out a strong first half for Army. In the 30th minute, Magee’s first score of the afternoon brought the team within one, with Pearce succeeding on the conversion to put the Black Knights up 20-19.

Magee showed his leadership and dominance in the 76th minute, as the reigning D1A Player of the Week, pounded his way through the Kutztown defense to score what would be the game winning try. Pearce succeeded on his third conversion of the afternoon to put the Black Knights on top 34-30. “They took a penalty and we decided to run a set piece,” Magee said. “Jamison Geracci took the ball in and gave us a great ball and Ben Foley then took it in and gave us a great ball and then Jake just gave me a wide open pass. Because of the work of the other guys I just had a wide open gap and it was easy to put it down.” Kutztown kept the game interesting in the final minutes, threatening late in the game, but Army’s defense came up big, regaining possession of the ball deep in their own territory and allowing the clock to run down. With the victory, Army moves to a perfect 6-0 on the season, in sole possession of first place in the Rugby East Conference. The team will play in their final regular season home competition of the fall season on Friday, Oct. 31 as they play host to service academy rival and seventh-ranked Air Force. They’ll close out the season with a road contest with Wheeling Jesuit the following week.

No. 3 Men’s Rugby Holds on For Thrilling 19-17 Victory Over No. 8 Air Force WEST POINT, N.Y. - A try in the second half from Andy Sullivan and an Andrew Borer conversion lifted the third-ranked Black Knights to a 19-17 victory over eighth-ranked and service academy foe Air Force under the lights from Anderson Rugby Complex. Sullivan’s try came in the 68th minute, with Borer’s kick putting Army on top for the first time since the 27th minute. Both Sullivan and Borer did not start the game but came in replacement of injured starers Jake Lachina and Logan Pearce. “I’m thrilled, it’s always a great game when we get to play another service academy, they’re the same kind of kids that we have here and they’re just America’s best so it’s just a privilidge to play them,” head coach Mike Mahan said. “It was a close game, I didn’t think it should have been that close, we just maybe were playing with a little too much emotion and not using our heads enough, but we made it through and we’re looking forward to next week in Wheeling.” Air Force missed two penalty kicks early on to keep the game scorless through the beginning of play. Army suffered a huge blow midway through the first half, as starting fullback and vice-captain Logan Pearce left the game due to injury. In the 21st minute, Army opened up the scoring with Jamison Geracci scoring the try and Borer succeeding on the kick to put the Black Knights up 7-0. Air Force would rattle off two tries, a conversion and a penalty kick to send Army into the break trailing 17-7. In the second half, David Huff broke free down the far side of the field, recording a try in the 45th minute to pull Army with five. Following Huff’s score, Air Force dominated possession as it appeared the game was getting away from the Black Knights.

It was a typical service academy rival game, so that’s what we had to do to win the game. It was a huge win, we’ve got Navy and the rest of the season to look forward to. To beat Air Force on our home turf like this is a big win for us but we’ve got a lot of work to do.” Leading 19-17 and performing in front of a gigantic crowd at Anderson Rugby Complex, the Black Knights were unable to hold on to the ball with neither team gaining possession for an extended period of time. The Falcons were awarded a penalty kick, with the opportunity to take the lead, in the 76th minute, but the ball sailed wide. Army maintained possession of the ball for a majority of the wanning minutes, holding on for the 19-17 victory. “To come off the bench and play at fullback, the position where all the pressure is, you’re back there all alone, Borer did such a great job,” Mahan added. “There’s not but a tiny bit of difference between him and Pearce so he just filled in great.” With the win, the Black Knights move to 7-0 on the season and still remain atop the Rugby East Conference standings. They’ll close out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 8 when they travel to No. 13 Wheeling Jesuit.

Army Holds Off Late Comeback to Finish Regular Season Undefeated WHEELING, W.Va. - The third-ranked Army menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rugby team completed a perfect season, capturing a 34-29 victory over conference rival and 13th-ranked Wheeling Jesuit on the road Saturday afternoon.

With the win Army moves to 8-0 on the season and the undisputed Rugby East Conference champion. The Black Knights will head to the American Collegiate Rugby Conference (ACRC) Tournament in Charlotte, N.C., on Nov. 21-22.

With the victory, Army moves to 8-0 on the season, having claimed victories over four nationally ranked opponents, including three straight to close out the year. Despite allowing Wheeling Jesuit to remain close, the Army defense held strong in the final minutes of action following three straight scores from the Cardinals. Wheeling Jesuit opened up the scoring in the ninth minute, taking the early 7-0 advantage. From that point, the Black Knights dominated play deep into the second half. Cody Brown scored first for Army, recording a try in the 13th minute. David Huff would follow suit, giving the Black Knights the 10-7 advantage through 20 minutes of play. In the 28th minute, Wheeling Jesuit tied the game up with a penalty kick, but a try from Collum Magee and a successful kick from Andrew Borer in the 31st minute would send the Black Knights into the break with the 17-10 advantage. Army picked up right where it left off in the second half with Andrew Fargo scoring in the 44th minute to put the Black Knights up 22-10. In the 53rd minute Borer would add his second try of the season, also converting the kick, to put Army up by 19. Andy Sullivan capped of the Army scoring in the 60th minute, putting the Black Knights up 34-10. Wheeling Jesuit would rattle off three straight scores in the waning minutes of the second half, getting within five of the Army lead, but the Black Knightsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; defense held strong, lifting the team to its eighth straight victory.

Men’s Rugby Falls to No. 2 Life in ACRC Bowl Game CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Army men’s rugby team dropped its first contest of the season, falling to No. 2 Life in the American Collegiate Rugby Conference (ACRC) Bowl Series from Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday evening. The Black Knights trailed for the entirety of the game, battling back from deep deficits to pull within 12 of the Running Eagles’ lead at half. Life, however, showed its dominance in the final 40 minutes of play to claim the 53-19 victory. Life got on the board first, scoring three straight tries to get up by a score of 17-0 through 25 minutes of play. Captain Collum Magee scored first for the Black Knights in the 29th minute, putting the score at 17-5 in favor of the Running Eagles. Another score from Life in the 34th minute gave them the 24-5 advantage, but a try from David Huff and successful conversion from Andrew Borer breathed life into the Black Knights and sent them into the break trailing 24-12. The Running Eagles came out hot in the second half, scoring four unanswered to take a commanding 48-12 lead through 66 minutes. In the 71st minute, senior Ben Foley muscled his way through the Life defense to score his first try of the game, with Borer again converting on the kick. Life would add a final score in the 79th minute to walk away with the 53-19 victory. The loss is the first of the season for the Black Knights who completed an unblemished 8-0 regular season, grabbing victories over four nationally-ranked programs.
