Most of us only take a week or two off during the summer for vacations, but the entire period between Memorial Day and Labor Day generally moves at a slower pace than the rest of the year. So, as we enter September we're going to ease in as we get back into the swing of things. To all of the new members that we welcomed this summer, if you were unable to make it to the New Member Orientation in July, mark your calendar for Tuesday, September 17. It's a relaxed event where you can learn about the different areas of the Club, meet other new members and staff, and most importantly, get to sample some specially selected items off of our catering menu.

The final Rooftop Happy Hour of the season will be the following day, September 18. While this series sold out quickly, rest assured that it will be back next year starting in May. Then on September 26, we'll have another gathering for the Professional Members Network (PMN); Headshots and Happy Hour. This is part of the professional development series that the staff runs in order to assist members who are looking to network within their field or starting down a new career path. Another facet of this series is what is known as a Lunch and Learn. A member of the Club, prominent in his or her field, is invited to host a small lunch in the Eagle Grill and speak to fellow members about their career and give advice. For our next one, however, we've enlisted the help of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). On October 25, Colonel Brian D. Anderson, USAF (Ret.), Senior Director, Career Transition & Member Services at the Military Officers Association of America, will be coming to the Club to speak to our membership specifically about transitioning from the military into civilian life, which will also include information for spouses. We expect that this will interest more than the dozen or so members who typically attend these events, so this one will be taking place in the ballroom and will be a buffet style lunch. Be sure to reserve your spot early! Some other career centered events taking place at the Club coming up will be delving into the topic of cybersecurity. This is a booming industry both within the military as well as in the private sector. This is another great networking opportunity for those already working in the field as well as for those looking to get into it. It will be a two-part series with the first on October 22 and the second on December 2. But if you want to take a break from all of the career talk, then you can come and enjoy yourself at the Scotch tastings set for October 24 and 25. This is always a sell out event, so rather than disappoint members, our very fine Food and Beverage Director, Patrick Grady, went ahead and put two on the calendar.

REFRESHING OUR CLUB'S STRATEGIC PLAN I appreciate our ANC Club leaders investing the time and resources to refresh our Strategic Plan. As your COO/GM seeking to successfully navigate and sustain our Club in today's dynamic cyber, social, technical and financial environments, while maintaining our unique and storied military heritage and traditions, my experiences at the ANC have made two things very clear. First, we know it is very important to address our facility improvements within a strategic context. Col James A. Bracken, USMC (Ret.), Vice President and Strategic Planning Commitee Chairman; and Lt Col John H. La Raia, USAFR (Ret.), Finance Committee Chairman have done a great job in keeping that at the forefront. The McMahon Group has continued to affirm that. Our membership survey last summer was an essential step in this process. Second, improvements should be considered within an overall master plan instead of discrete, separate projects. Commissioning the Miller/Dodson Capital Reserve Study was a huge step. Without these two elements, the ANC's tendency has been to fix depreciation and aesthetics while undershooting the larger issues – THE REALLY HARD PART – for most clubs, related to changing societal values that will impact demand for membership. Thus, our continuing well intended conversations about facility improvements should be second to our changes in lifestyles, resident and non-resident members' needs, desires and values, and current and future target markets. THIS IS THE REALLY HARD PIECE TO FIGURE OUT. This sets the stage for the tough reviewing and developing mission and vision statements to clarify the ANC's purpose and aspirations. These, in turn, provide the clarity that is required to identify the physical and cultural environments that would best serve the type of Club that our current service academy plebes that join the Club early in their careers, then officers, then highly sought-after ANC members. We want to authentically market and perpetuate the value proposition that as officer's transition into the private sector, the ANC is a vital ingredient that continually ensures their continued professional success and enhances the lives of their families. We have a highly talented Board that will continue to provide the insights needed to create the transformative and enduring investments that ensure the ANC's current and future excellence and sustainability. I think it was Lt Col La Raia who said, "It would be great if that 40 years from now the Board in 2060 say that those guys back in 2020 really knew what they were doing." General Wright has challenged our team to continually raise the bar and provide the best member experience. When members' expectations are exceeded and their needs are thoughtfully addressed in unexpected ways, they feel special. Taking an authentic interest in our ANC member interactions, not just their transactions. We are not a transactional culture, we foster a relational culture of empathy and gratitude – serving those who have served. Adapting to changing needs of ANC members is essential to remain relevant to our existing and future members. Delivering consistent daily positive member experiences requires perpetual innovation while remaining mindful of our illustrious military history.

On their first day in the Budapest hotel, they met fellow Club Members Jim and Carol Rispoli (couple on the right). John and Jim quickly realized that they are both retired Navy Captains, that both couples were celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversaries in June, and that they are all Army and Navy Club members. Here they are in Kinderdijk, Netherlands at the UNESCO windmill heritage site. Club Member James Farley (third from the left) of Bristol, Rhode Island led our Nation's oldest 4th of July Celebration in Bristol as Chief Marshal. Beginning in the early 1800's through to the current celebration, it is considered to be one of the highest honors bestowed on a Bristolian. Club Members CDR Joe Troiani, USN (Ret.) and his wife Terrie recently returned from their Smithsonian Journeys tour of Morocco. Here they are in Marrakech in front of the Mosque Minaret which is featured in a famous painting by Winston S. Churchill titled "View of Marrakech 1943." That was the only completed painting he did during World War II, which he gave to President Roosevelt. Club member Ellis Craig (second from the left), Co-Director for Strategy with Veterans Leadership Council (VLC) participated in a panel discussion on 20 July 2019. The event was hosted by The Fund for American Studies (TFAS). MEMBERSHIP CORNER // MEMBERSHIP

MEMBERSHIP CORNER BY LIZ JUSKIE | DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP, M ARKETING & COM MUNICATIONS

As the Director of Membership, my hope is that when members join The Army and Navy Club, they are able to find meaningful connections within the Club. The job of the Membership and Marketing Department is to facilitate these connections, whether it be through our special events, the Community News section of The Dispatch, or social media. Our big focus over the past three years or so has been networking, and helping our members build their careers and friendships. While my team and I were working on this issue of The Dispatch, knowing it was going to focus on career building and transitioning, our General Manger, John Warnack, called me up to the Main Dining Room. There were two members that he wanted me to meet: Major Shannon M. Vinson, USAFR (pictured on the right) and Lieutenant Colonel Alex Wright, USAF (Ret.) (pictured below). They were having lunch, discussing Alex's new business and Shannon was offering ideas that could benefit his business. Alex joined the ANC 5 months ago. "Initially, what sparked my interest to join the Club was the networking opportunities and [having] a unique and classy location to host clients and business associations." Shannon originally joined the Club in 2005, crediting the decision to a Navy pilot friend. After spending the past 13 years either overseas or deployed, she and her husband are now back in the area and at the Club. Neither Shannon nor Alex knew of each other up until 2 months ago, having just met at a mutual friend's going away party this past July. They got to talking about Alex's company, The Inter-American Community Alliance. The entity offers comprehensive relocation services to international professionals on temporary assignment to the Washington, DC area. Shannon, who was previously the class leader for the Air Force Congressional Fellows, immediately recognized a void that Alex's business could fill. She encouraged him to consider offering his services to busy military professionals with families that move from overseas and cannot allocate time to house hunt, find the right schools for their children, find a church home, look into golf, tennis, dining memberships, sensibly calculate commute times to and from work, etc. And that is exactly what they were discussing when I met with them in the Main Dining Room. Networking at its finest, and two members finding that connection. And while Alex is still fairly new to the Club, he is confident it will have a positive impact on his career. Shannon is also going to start a new phase in her career as her time on the OSD team is nearing the end. Having transitioned to the reserves in 2010, Shannon says she is open to any possibility, "‌ as I have DoD, Congressional, inter-agency, and Fortune 500 experience." And who knows, maybe she will find her next opportunity through the Club. To learn more about networking opportunities at the Club, check out our website, www.armynavyclub.org. ◄

LUNCH AND A LECTURE SERIES "5G Cyber Threats" with Michelle Combs Watson, President and CEO of Cyber Intelligent Partners LLC Friday, September 20, 2019 Lunch: 12:30 pm | Presentation: 1 pm $24++ per person

Opening with the 1930 London Conference, Symonds shows how any limitations on naval warfare would become irrelevant before the decade was up, as Europe erupted into conflict once more and its navies were brought to bear against each other. World War II at Sea offers a global perspective, focusing on the major engagements and personalities and revealing both their scale and their interconnection: the U-boat attack on Scapa Flow and the Battle of the Atlantic; the "miracle" evacuation from Dunkirk and the pitched battles for control of Norway fjords; Mussolini's Regia Marina-at the start of the war the fourth-largest navy in the world-and the dominance of the KidĂś Butai and Japanese naval power in the Pacific; Pearl Harbor then Midway; the struggles of the Russian Navy and the scuttling of the French Fleet in Toulon in 1942; the landings in North Africa and then Normandy.

BOOK FORUM

This lunch series will address the current 5G cyber threats. The guest speaker is Michelle Combs Watson, President and CEO of Cyber Intelligent Partners (CIP). Mayfield Tuesday, September 24, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm | Speaker: 7 pm Price: $10 per person Nathan Finney and Tyrell Mayfield, editors of Redefining the Modern Military, will be discussing the importance of re-examining the profession of arms during and between conflicts, as well the impact of modern warfare and social online communications on the military. This edited collection will expand upon and refine the ideas on the role of ethics and the profession in the 21st Century. The authors delve into whether Samuel Huntington and Morris Janowitz still ring true in the 21st century; whether training and continuing education play a role in defining a profession; and if there is a universal code of ethics required for the military as a profession.

"The British Are Coming: The War for America, Lexington to Princeton, 1775-1777" by Rick Atkinson Tuesday, October 8, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm | Speaker: 7 pm Price: $10 per person The British Are Coming recounts the first 21 months of America's violent war for independence. From the battles at Lexington and Concord in spring 1775 to those at Trenton and Princeton in winter 1777, American militiamen and then the ragged Continental Army take on the world's most formidable fighting force. It is a gripping saga alive with astonishing characters: Henry Knox, the former bookseller with an uncanny understanding of artillery; Nathanael Greene, the blue-eyed bumpkin who becomes a brilliant battle captain; Benjamin Franklin, the self-made man who proves to be the wiliest of diplomats; George Washington, the commander in chief who learns the difficult art of leadership when the war seems all but lost. The story is also told from the British perspective, making the mortal conflict between the redcoats and the rebels all the more compelling.

LIBR ARY TRUST FUND // UPDATE

A Letter from the Library Trust Chairman MG John D. Altenburg, USA (Ret.)

D-Day 75th Anniversary Exhibition Extended again through mid-September Members expressed interest in the Club's D-Day 75th Anniversary exhibition remaining in the Eagle Grill after the Grill re-opens in early September—and so it shall remain there for a few more weeks. Please stop by to see it and its inclusion of special art donations by members Albert Small, Carole Brookins, and Bill Adair. Thanks so much for your generous comments regarding the Omaha Door article in last month's Dispatch by our Director of Collections and Exhibits, Ari Post. Adair's Gold Doors to Infinity exhibit is being removed from the squash court this week—the first week in September—so try to see it before the squash court is returned, as it should be, to our squash players. ☺

Library Trust Donations We'd like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you who support the Library Trust. Thank you for your continuing donations, contributions, and investment of all variety. Without your enthusiasm and engagement, none of our efforts over the years would have been possible, or meaningful. For all of us that work to enhance the beauty, history, and community on which this Club was founded, your support of the Library Trust is essential and deeply appreciated. Library Trust donations are more essential than ever. We continue working to enhance our Club through new exhibitions, artist talks, and new acquisitions, as well as expand our online collection for the edification of our members and the public and to facilitate new partnerships with institutions like the Smithsonian Institute and the Naval War College Museum. Conservation is expensive, but essential to the future of our collection, which I believe we all agree is one of the most valuable and enriching amenities our Club offers. Will Andersen, our new Club Librarian (pictured on the left), is off to a fast start in analyzing our book collection. There was no time for a PreDeployment Site Survey, but Aleksandra Zajackowski, our now-retired librarian of 23 years, provided an excellent two week Right-Seat-Ride for him. Will has an impressive background and holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Literature from Davidson College in North Carolina, a Master of Arts in History from North Carolina State University, and a Master's in Library Science (MLS) from UNC-Chapel Hill. Prior to accepting this position, he worked at the Union Club of New York City as their librarian for four years. Will has maintained the energy and momentum derived from Aleksandra's experience and guidance. We have in this space in previous months alluded to Library Trust Committee interest in expanding our book capabilities, especially on our website, which since its first posting just a few years ago, has been devoted only to our art collection. We intend to leverage the website for library books also, so expect an online library catalogue and an integrated library system. Will is screening the current collection and will develop a Collection Development Plan as he works to shape our collection. Don't hesitate to contact us with your suggestions and good ideas for a better library as so many of you have done regarding the art collection. Determining where we may have excess volumes and where we may want to strengthen the library with an acquisition plan are just two areas where your suggestions are most welcome. Once the library collection has been screened thoroughly, Will intends to re-catalogue the entire collection in MAchine Readable Cataloging (MARC). Our 501(c)(3) status enables members to contribute to our continuing improvement and acquisition efforts. There are several ways to donate other than through monthly Club dues and periodic contributions through those invoices. Donations to the Library Trust are fully tax deductible. Please contact John Altenburg (altenburgj@gtlaw.com) for more information. As always, we greatly appreciate your generosity, especially the regular donations. Thanks!!! ◄

THE LOYAL LEGION // HISTORY VAULT

The Loyal Legion By Col James A. Bracken, USMC (Ret.) Club Vice President & Historian

O

ur Club origins trace back to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865. With his death, rumors of conspiracy to destroy the Federal Government by assassinating its leaders spread quickly. Three former Union Army officers, in reaction to the rumors in Philadelphia, organized a mass meeting of Philadelphia veterans to pledge renewed allegiance to the Union. From this came a permanent organization of active and former officers named the “Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States,” or simply, “The Loyal Legion.”

The Loyal Legion grew rapidly by establishing Companions in 14 states and in Washington, DC. In 1885 five veteran officers from the Mexican War and the Civil War, all members of the Loyal Legion Washington, DC Companion, joined with two senior active duty officers to transform their local organization into a professional military club, which they initially named the United Services Club. And, as they say, the rest is history – the history of our Club. Membership in the United Services Club, soon to be renamed The Army and Navy Club, was open to all former and active Army, Navy and Marine Corps officers and to members of the Loyal Legion. Granting eligibility to the Loyal Legion made good sense as in 1885 a mere 2000 officers comprised the entire Army, 1235 the Navy and 77 the Marine Corps. Additionally there were 222 cadets at West Point and 140 midshipmen at Annapolis. Such numbers, scattered across the United States, were hardly a large enough base for building a flourishing club. At its height, the Loyal Legion counted over 8,000 Civil War veterans enrolled as active members. That number included nearly all notable general and flag officers and several presidents. Among the names were Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, McClellan, Rutherford Hayes, Chester Arthur and William McKinley. Many of them, of course, joined our Club. Today, the Loyal Legion serves as a hereditary society, as does the Society of Cincinnati and the Aztec Society. Most certainly the founding seven officers of the United Services Club would be pleased to see our clubhouse today and the enjoyment it offers our members. We tip our hat to the Loyal Legion and the impetus they provided in creating our Army and Navy Club. ◄

This was not the first time former officers joined together after a war. The Loyal Legion took inspiration for properly establishing and governing itself from the Society of Cincinnati, an association of officers from America's War of Independence and from the Aztec Club of 1847, an organization of officer veterans from the Mexican War.
