June 6 will mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day. It was a day that changed the course of history when some 156,000 American, British, and Canadian forces landed on the beaches of Normandy commanded by our very own Club member, then General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Regular Feature Library Trust Fund Update ..... 18
We pay tribute to him and the troops that sacrificed everything for freedom, and dedicate this issue of The Dispatch to them. You can read General Eisenhower's inspiring message to the Allied forces as they prepared for the invasion on the next page. Let us never forget the courage exhibited that morning.

ON T H E COV E R
On Saturday, June 1, the Club will host a Mess Night Dinner to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day. COL Douglas Mastriano, USA (Ret.), a noted American military historian and politician, will be the guest speaker. It is sure to be a night full of informative history and military traditions, and certainly one not to be missed. Then, on Tuesday, June 18, Nigel Hamilton will be back for a book forum with the final book of his three-part series of FDR at war, War and Peace: FDR’s Final Odyssey: D-Day to Yalta, 1943-1945. We are honored to have him back at the Club as part of this historic anniversary. The second Rooftop Happy Hour of the season is on Wednesday, June 19. It sold out in a matter of hours, which goes to show why it's so important to keep up with Club communications. But not to worry, there are three more scheduled for this year! Mark your calendar and get your reservation in for July 17, August 21, and September 18. Remember that reservations open 60 days before the event. Last month you may have noticed that a Young Members Subcommittee of the Special Events Committee is forming. Their inaugural event will take place on Saturday, July 20 with a Fête Blanche, or White Party. While this event is hosted by the Young Members, it is open to all Club members. Check out page 16 for more details. Speaking of young members, real young members, the annual kids' event will be on the afternoon of Saturday, July 27. It's always a great event where the kids get to take over the Club for an afternoon, and give the parents much needed, albeit short, break. As you finalize your plans for the summer, I hope you keep your Club in mind, and I look forward to seeing you here.

A Message from General Dwight D. Eisenhower A Member of The Army and Navy Club
Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force: You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of libertyloving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world. Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped, and battlehardened. He will fight savagely. But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to victory! I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory! Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

ALBERT H. SMALL
A MAN WITH A MISSION We are including an excerpt from the General Manager's Letter from January 2019 regarding resident member Albert H. Small. We are indeed fortunate that we have citizens like Mr. Small who do not want us to forget the hard learned lessons of World War II.
H
ere at The Army Navy Club, we have our own D-Day "story." One of our Golden Knight members, Albert Small, is a 93-year-old World War II veteran who felt it was so important to pass on to future generations the lessons of sacrifice for freedom from World War II, and especially D-Day, that he wanted to create a program to do just that. Working with another Army and Navy Club member, his good friend Robert (Bob) Perry, who himself is a Vietnam veteran and whose uncle fought in World War II, the Albert H. Small Normandy Institute was created, and is about to begin its ninth year. It is an annual program for high school teachers and students to study the lessons of D-Day, culminating in a trip in June of each year to Washington, DC, and Normandy, France. Mr. Small has endowed this program so that it can be held in perpetuity, and continue to reach and teach successive generations about these important lessons. Below is a portrait of Mr. Small holding a copy of Ike's D-Day letter to the troops. A copy of this letter, along with other Normandy memorabilia, are gifts to the ANC from Mr. Small and are on permanent display in the Eagle Grill.

SUM MER R E A DING LIST Summer is a great time to catch up on reading, when the days are longer and the weather is ideal for lounging outside with a good book. And who better to get your summer "must-read" suggestions from than your very own Special Events Committee (SEC)? The members of the SEC spend the year reviewing more than 100 books for potential forums at the Club. Although many of these books are well written, only a select number make it to the actual forum stage, due to author availability as well as subject interest. The below list is offered simply for you to explore at your leisure. Catch up on a good spy story or read about leadership lessons from the great military minds of our day. We hope you enjoy! And just to note, many of these titles are available in the ANC library! "The Old Man and The Sea" by Ernest Hemingway Recommended by Mr. Tom McGonigle "You probably have not picked this up since high school English class, but returning with some life perspective to the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his battle with a giant marlin, adds greater appreciation to Hemingway's treatment of the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat."
"Washington's General" by Terry Golway Recommended by LCDR Neysa Slater-Chandler "A fascinating study of a fascinating man; a study in contrasts, and a great Rhode Islander!"
"Honoring the Enemy" by Robert N. Macomber Recommended by CDR Louis Husser "This book celebrates what the ANC honors on the walls of the Daiquiri Lounge."
"God, War, and Providence" by James A. Warren Recommended by LtCol Peter McCarthy "This is a beautifully written book. Interesting and entertaining. Topic ideal for the history buff focus on the very earliest aspect of colonial America and the North East."
"Rise and Kill First" by Ronen Bergman Recommended by COL Tom Woloszyn "This book is the first definitive history of the Mossad, Shin Bet, and the IDF’s targeted killing programs."
"The Good Mothers" by Alex Perry Recommended by Capt Don Hooper "An unprecedented look inside a deadly and obscenely wealthy branch of the Italian mafia and the electrifying story of the women who risked everything to bring them down."
"Killers of the Flower Moon" by David Grann Recommended by Mrs. Madeline Caporiccio "A true story of how the Osage Indians were systematically killed off after they discovered oil on the land where they were living, and became the richest people in America. Because of the number of suspicious deaths and the fact that they were not being investigated, the FBI was created.
"On Grand Strategy" by John Lewis Gaddis Recommended by CDR John Klein "The book explores the reasons for statecraft and war, through the perspective of great personalities from history."
"Thunder at the Gates" by Douglas Egerton Recommended by LTC Aric Raus "Thunder at the Gate provides the untold story of those fighting for their own freedom, while constantly questioning wether they would even see equality, even if they won."
"Nineteen Eighty-Four" by George Orwell Recommended by COL Brian Michelson "Worth a re-read, seems almost even more prophetic today than when it was written because we are actually approaching the ability to achieve the dystopia he describes." 7 | JUNE 2019

MILITARY HE RITAG E ME S S NIG HT Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings on June 6, 1944 Saturday, June 1, 2019 Cocktail Reception: 6 pm | Dinner: 7:30 pm Main Dining Room | $100 per person Attire: Mess Dress or Black Tie Open to all Club members and guests.
Guest Speaker COL Douglas Mastriano, USA (Ret.) The Military Mess is a tradition steeped in history and symbolism. Tracing its roots in Roman Legion and Viking victory dinners, the custom transferred from Saxon Nobility through medieval monasteries before finding its current form in the British and U.S. Military during the 18th century. The Army and Navy Club invites you to carry-on this military tradition at the upcoming Military Heritage Mess Night on June 1, commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. Designed to foster morale and increase esprit de corps, Military Mess nights provide attendees with an evening filled with historical activities, toasts, and hymns not found in the civilian world. From the President's opening proclamation that the meal is "tasty and fit for human consumption" to punishments for Violations of the Mess, and the sobering final toast to the fallen, the formal ceremony is an eclectic mix of the jovial comradery and somber reflection that are the hallmarks of military service. For reservations, please contact Elizabeth Newcomer at 202-355-0505 or enewcomer@armynavyclub.org.

BOOK FORUM "Oceans Ventured: Winning the Cold War at Sea" By John F. Lehman
BOOK FORUM "A Covert Action: Reagan, the CIA, and the Cold War Struggle in Poland" By Seth Jones
Tuesday, June 4, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm | Speaker: 7 pm Price: $10 per person
Tuesday, July 16, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm | Speaker: 7 pm Price: $10 per person
When Ronald Reagan took office in January 1981, the United States and NATO were losing the Cold War. The USSR had superiority in conventional weapons and manpower in Europe, and had embarked on a massive program to gain naval preeminence. But Reagan already had a plan to end the Cold War without armed conflict. Reagan led a bipartisan Congress to restore American command of the seas by building the navy back to six hundred major ships and fifteen aircraft carriers. He adopted a bold new strategy to deploy the growing fleet to northern waters around the periphery of the Soviet Union. The Soviets, suffocated by this naval strategy, were forced to bankrupt their economy trying to keep pace. In Oceans Ventured, John Lehman reveals for the first time the untold story of the naval operations that played a major role in winning the Cold War.
BOOK FORUM
In this gripping narrative history, Seth G. Jones reveals the little-known story of the CIA’s subsequent operations in Poland, which produced a landmark victory for democracy during the Cold War. While the Soviet-backed Polish government worked to crush a budding liberal opposition movement, the CIA began a sophisticated intelligence campaign, code-named QRHELPFUL, that supported dissident groups. The most powerful of these groups was Solidarity, a trade union that swelled to a membership of ten million and became one of the first legitimate anti-Communist opposition movements in Eastern Europe. QRHELPFUL proved vital in establishing a free and democratic Poland. A Covert Action celebrates a decisive victory over tyranny for U.S. intelligence behind the Iron Curtain, one that prefigured the Soviet collapse.
"War and Peace: FDR's Final Odyssey: D-Day to Yalta, 1943–1945" By Nigel Hamilton Tuesday, June 18, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm | Speaker: 7 pm Price: $10 per person To mark the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, the stirring climax to Nigel Hamilton's three-part saga of FDR at war—proof that he was WWII's key strategist, even on his deathbed. Nigel Hamilton's celebrated trilogy culminates with a story of triumph and tragedy. Just as FDR was proven right by the D-day landings he had championed, so was he found to be mortally ill in the spring of 1944. He was the architect of a victorious peace that he would not live to witness. Using hitherto unpublished documents and interviews, Hamilton rewrites the famous account of World War II strategy given by Winston Churchill in his memoirs. Seventy-five years after the D-day landings we finally get to see, close-up and in dramatic detail, who was responsible for rescuing, and insisting upon, the great American-led invasion of France in June 1944.
BOOK FORUM "Indianapolis: The True Story of the Worst Sea Disaster in U.S. Naval History and the Fifty-Year Fight to Exonerate an Innocent Man" By Lynn Vincent and Sara Vladic Tuesday, July 30, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm | Speaker: 7 pm Price: $10 per person For the better part of a century, the story of USS Indianapolis has been understood as a sinking tale. The reality, however, is far more complicated—and compelling. Now, for the first time, thanks to a decade of original research and interviews with 107 survivors and eyewit nesses, Lynn Vincent and Sara Vladic tell the complete story of the ship, her crew, and their final mission to save one of their own. A sweeping saga of survival, sacrifice, justice, and love, Indianapolis stands as both groundbreaking naval history and spellbinding narrative—and brings the ship and her heroic crew back to full, vivid, unforgettable life. It is the definitive account of one of the most remarkable episodes in American history.
LUNCH AND A LECTURE SERIES "The Future of American Space Power" with Dr. John J. Klein, Mr. Dean Cheng, Dr. Peter L. Hays, and Ms. Charity Weeden Friday, June 28, 2019 Lunch: 12:30 pm | Presentation: 1 pm Price: $24++ per person This lunch series will address current U.S. national security space initiatives, given the rise of great power competition in space. These initiatives include the potential establishment of a new military service—a U.S. Space Force. The panel will address deterrence in space, how China views exploiting space for strategic advantage, and how the United States can partner with allies and commercial companies to protect its interests in space.
RESERVATIONS For reservations, please call 202-355-0505 or visit www. armynavyclub.org. All book forums, unless otherwise noted, are $10 per person. LIBR ARY TRUST FUND // UPDATE
Historic Civil War Stereographs Are Now Online at Collections.ArmyNavyClub.org Reginald Oakie donated a rare and important collection of original Civil War stereographs to the Library Trust in 1983. Unfortunately, due to the combination of their fragile condition, old age, and the wear-and-tear they would inevitably sustain from the handling required to view them properly, the collection could not be made widely available. But now, thanks to our online collection website, these stereographs are available for members to see for the first time. The first batch of stereographs, roughly 160 in total, have been posted to our Collections website for a month now. To see them, visit Collections.ArmyNavyClub.org, and click "Special Collections" in the dropdown Collections menu bar. We estimate that the collection numbers approximately 1,200 unique stereographs. The scanning and archiving of this collection will continue during the next year until it is available online in its entirety, with advanced keyword search from the Librar y Trust Chairman functions. You will be able to search specifically for certain battles, landmarks, historical figures, and much more (you can already do that, of course, but you'll soon be able to use the search functions with the entire collection of 1,200 stereographs!).
A LETTER
The Oakie collection contains several stereoscope viewers. Some are in excellent working condition. While we cannot make these publicly available because of their antique condition, any Club member with interest in viewing them should contact John Altenburg to set up a private viewing appointment. We'll discuss more thoroughly in a future Dispatch the donor, Reginald Oakie, and a brief "History of Stereographs" that we are researching and writing.
Miniature Collections The Library Trust now has two collections of miniature Soldiers. They were donated by Club members thirty-five years apart. Colonel Chester Cotter USA (Ret.) donated his extensive collection in 1983. Colonel Tom Fahres (House Committee) has worked diligently for several years to rotate the collection in the display case near the Eagle Grill entrance on floor B-1. Captain Conway Zeigler USN (Ret.) recently donated his unique collection which includes many 18th and 19th century pieces. His collection is in a display case in the Club Library on the third floor. Captain Zeigler's extensive collection also must be rotated occasionally because of the number of pieces.
WW II Commando Escape Map on French Silk Scarf Club Member Carol Brookins has donated to the Library Trust an original World War II commando escape map of occupied France. It was used by commandos and resistance operatives for escape and evasion to safety. The scarf is framed and exhibited at the entrance to the Eagle Grill, near other paintings and photographs related to the June 6, 1944 Normandy invasion.
"Depicting the Invisible" Exhibition Gone But Not Forgotten The 5-month exhibition of Susan Barron's exceptional portraits received extraordinary praise from our members and guests. For the first time in memory, the Library Trust publicized that an exhibit was open to the public on specific dates and for limited hours. A gentle reminder was included that with the opportunity to visit the exhibit came Club dress code compliance. Our dress code presented no obstacle to those who were captivated by the opportunity to see the poignant exhibit on both first and second floors of the Club. We continue to seek permission to show the award-winning documentary of "Depicting the Invisible." It won Best Documentary Short at the New York City International Film Festival, but remains unavailable to the public to protect the intellectual property rights.
Library Trust Donations Library Trust donations are critical to our ability to continue to improve both the library book collection and the art collection. We continue to seek donors for two significant naming opportunities for sponsors who want to help the Trust attain an endowment corpus sufficient to support the Library Trust in perpetuity. Please contact John Altenburg (altenburgj@gtlaw.com) for more information. Always know we appreciate your generosity, especially the regular donations through the Club’s invoicing of member accounts. Thanks!!! 18 | THE DISPATCH
NORMANDY // HISTORY VAULT
France Will Never Forget
An aerial view from June 30, 2007 of Omaha Beach at Colleville-sur-Mer, France, where 3,000 people form a message, “France Will Never Forget, below the U.S. military cemetery. Omaha Beach was the scene of the bloodiest of the WWII D-Day landings that began on June 6, 1944. This event took place on the 63rd anniversary of D-Day. This photograph was a gift to the Club from member Albert H. Small, Jr., a World War II Navy Veteran. Small established Project Normandy: Sacrifice for Freedom. Through this foundation, selected students and teachers have the opportunity to research and build memorial websites for soldiers from their home states who are buried at an American Cemetery in Normandy. The Foundation funds their travel to France and tours of D-Day battlefields.
