FOReWoRD

Waterloo was a significant battle and victory. The centenary was largely forgotten because of the great struggle then taking place over similar ground with Britain now allied with its former enemy against its principal ally. Waterloo had the romance of colour and plumage, dash and valour, noise and smoke, and British “doggedness”. But it was a costly victory. About 1 in 5 soldiers taking part were casualties. It was also the last major battle fought before the invention of photography, so our imagination is stirred by paintings, first-hand accounts, and all the subsequent literature, poetry, music, perceived tradition and monuments which the event has inspired. The Club has arranged a varied bicentenary programme to commemorate and acknowledge the significance of the battle. This programme runs during “Napoleon’s Hundred Days, the period marked between his return from exile on Elba to Paris in March 1815. We invite you to actively participate in our programme of events, which will be hosted in the Clubhouse. Colonel BL Carter OBE RM Chairman of The Army & Navy Club.

Professor Charles Esdaile: Wargaming Waterloo

Dr Gregory Fremont-Barnes: Waterloo, Factors Accounting to Victory and Defeat

Wargaming is the re-enactment of real or generic historical battles on the floor, the table-top or, latterly, the computer screen, and has been with us for perhaps 300 years (indeed, 1000 years if one includes chess and its many oriental cousins). In this illustrated talk, veteran wargamer and leading expert on the Napoleonic Wars, Professor Charles Esdaile, looks at the different ways the battle of Waterloo has been recreated in this fashion, and the lengths to which game designers and others have been forced to go to give the French a chance of winning. In the process meanwhile, he shows how wargaming was given a major boost in popularity by the Napoleonic Wars, and suggests that, if the Prussian army performed so well at Waterloo, it was in part because many of its officers had turned to wargaming as a means of planning the defeat of Napoleon.

Professor Charles Esdaile is a Lecturer of History at the University of Liverpool. His main areas of interest include military, political and social history, and he is a specialist on Spain in the revolutionary and Napoleonic era. An established Author, Professor Esdaile has several publications including The Prussian army at Waterloo: The Waterloo Companion, and Women in the Peninsula War.

The presentation by Dr Fremont-Barnes will provide a broad outline of the Battle of Waterloo, including an analysis of the factors which led to victory and defeat. Yet since Waterloo must not be studied in isolation, attention will be paid placing this pivotal event in its historical context, including a background to events of 1815 and the consequences which followed. Gregory Fremont-Barnes holds a doctorate in Modern History from Oxford University and serves as a Senior Lecturer in War Studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He has written extensively, but with an emphasis on the Napoleonic Wars, including the recently published Waterloo 1815: The British Army’s Day of Destiny. He has led numerous battlefield studies for British Army officers to the Peninsula, Waterloo and to the Falklands.

Carole Divall: The 30th Regiment of Foot

Dr Michael Rowe: The Congress of Vienna The Congress of Vienna was a conference of ambassadors of European states, first held in September 1814. Its purpose was to initiate a series of discussions with a view to securing long-term peace and solve critical issues arising from the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.

By taking one regiment that fought at Waterloo as an example, Carole Divall will explore the life and experiences of the men who formed the backbone of Wellington’s allied army, the British and the King’s German Legion infantry. The 30th Foot was typical of British infantry battalions, performing all the duties assigned to such troops: active service, including serving as marines, garrison duty, recruiting, colonial service etc. Carole will examine every aspect of regimental life: the two-battalion structure, the officers (on and off duty), the men in the ranks, and the process of recruitment, courts martial, medical treatment and even religion. Nor will women and children be forgotten in this survey of the inner workings of a typical infantry regiment. Carole Divall is an author, researcher and historian and is currently the secretary to the education and learning group of Waterloo 200. Carole has a particular interest in regimental history and has published the books Redcoats against Napoleon, Inside the Regiment, and Napoleonic Lives.

In his lecture, author and historian, Dr Michael Rowe, will address important questions that were discussed such as how, as a result of the unprecedented scale of warfare that characterised this age, did the relationship between governments and peoples, princes and subjects, and elites and the masses, change? To what extent did the Napoleonic era mark the birth of modern Europe? Dr Rowe will also explore the individuals, their personalities, (mis) deeds and (mis) givings at the conference. Dr Michael Rowe is a Senior Lecturer in modern European History at King’s College London. He completed his PhD thesis in Cambridge after graduating with a BA History degree from King’s College London in 1992. His research interests are focused on Continental Europe during the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, analysing in particular how political culture changed under the impact of new ideas and events, and how the relationship between subject and state was transformed.

Dr Russ E. Foster: Wellington and Waterloo, Monumental Oversights 1815-2015

Oskar Cox-Jenson: Battle Ballads: Waterloo, Song, and the Fight for Posterity

Based on his recently published book, Dr Foster’s illustrated talk will consider the huge impact which the Battle of Waterloo had in the years after 1815. Britons commemorated Wellington and his victory in a myriad of ways: in poems, paintings and statues; in street names and pub signs. They also joined the masses that descended on the battlefield itself, which quickly became more a tourist attraction than a war memorial. After Wellington’s death in 1852, however, official acts of public commemoration declined. This was the consequence of something more than the simple passage of time - for the legacy of Waterloo was both contested and politicised. As we approach the bi-centenary, it might be suggested, it remains so.

No sooner had one battle ended, than another began. Waterloo was fought twice, on the field and at home, an arsenal of bayonets, muskets, sabres and round shot replaced by illuminations, poems, paintings and songs. More than ever before, the Napoleonic Wars were cultural and ideological, and the right to interpret events was contested on the home front, for the sake of both contemporary politics and posterity.

Russ Foster graduated with a First in History from the University of Southampton. Recipient of a major state studentship from the British Academy, he became the first graduate to work on the Wellington Papers when they were deposited at Southampton in 1983. A book stemming from the resulting doctoral thesis was published in 1990. Since then he has contributed over thirty articles to books and journals on various aspects of modern British history. He is a member of the Waterloo Association as well as the Education and Learning Group of Waterloo 200.

Members: Free Guest of members: £10 NON-MEMBERS: £10

In this lecture, Oskar will consider the British experience of Waterloo as sung: by soldiers marching on Paris and on patrol in its streets; by Romantic poets in London parlours; and, most importantly, by ordinary men and women across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, in Britain’s streets, homes, and pubs. Aided by a live band, many of these songs, varying widely in politics and musical affect, are brought to life in all their tragedy and their glory. The picture that emerges is of a conflict almost as dangerous and every bit as emotional as that fought on a Belgian field; a conflict taking in treason, pride, love and hatred – and a conflict that, in the long run, Napoleon won. Oskar Cox-Jensen read Modern History at Christ Church, Oxford, where he completed his doctoral thesis on ‘Napoleon and British Popular Song, 1797-1822’ (currently being reworked as a book at Cambridge University Press). He is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Music Department of King’s College London, preparing two new academic volumes; on ballad-singers, and the songwriter Charles Dibdin the Elder. He appears here with The Waterloo Singers, a group of folk musicians and historians specialising in the music of the Napoleonic Wars.

Waterloo Regency Ball

The Army & Navy Club will be hosting a Ball to commemorate the Duchess of Richmond’s Ball which was held in Brussels on the 15th June 1815, one day before the Battle of Quatre Bras. Elizabeth Pakenham, Countess of Longford has described it as “the most famous ball in history, at which with the exception of three generals, every officer high in (Wellington’s) army was there to be seen”. For those uninitiated in the ways of Georgian ballroom dancing, the Duke of Wellington’s Dancers shall be entertaining guests by providing a Regency dance workshop in the early afternoon. Following the workshop, afternoon tea will be served before the Ball which will commence at 19.00. Dinner will be served after a period of dancing. Music shall be provided by professional music group, Green Ginger Band. Canapés and drinks will be served on arrival. Located on page 16 of this brochure is a list of clothiers and costume stores which specialise in the hiring and selling of Regency outfits for ladies and gentlemen.

Wednesday 17th June, 18.00 Professor Sir Hew Strachan: Strategy & Tactics, How the Battle of Waterloo was won On the eve of the day of the Battle, Professor Sir Hew Strachan will deliver a talk on the strategy and tactics used by Wellington and Blücher to turn the tide of battle in their favour and ultimately claim a decisive victory that heralded a sustained period of peace throughout most of Europe. From the stern defence of Hougoumont Farm by the Coldstream and Third Guards, to the barrages of artillery and advancing thrusts of Marshall Ney’s Cavalrymen at La Haye Sante, Sir Hew Strachan will paint a very visceral picture to the key decisions and actions that decided the fate of a continent. Professor Sir Hew Strachan has been chichele Professor of the History of War at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of All Souls College since 2002, and was Director of the Oxford Programme on the Changing Character of War between 2003 and 2012.
