Wisconsin Family THREE GENERATIONS OF WISCONSIN ARMY FAMILY PREPARE FOR ARMY TEN-MILER

With fitness and conditioning so critical to military service, it comes as no surprise that many armed forces families participate in the Army Ten-Miler each year, many of whom travel great distances for the experience. Retired Wisconsin Army National Guard Major Dale Ray Bergeson will bring “Papa’s Crew” to run this year, a multi-generational team that includes his 18-year-old grandson, Liam O’Keefe, a high school senior who plans to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps and pursue a career in the US Army, and two of his daughters -- one of whom is an ATM rookie.

6

An experienced distance runner, Bergeson discovered his love for running while undergoing physical training during basic training at Fort Campbell, Ky. Raised on a dairy farm, Dale’s early morning and afternoon chores barred his participation in school sports, but he quickly discovered that, as one among some 180 Soldiers in basic, he performed better than most in the physical fitness test. “I made the best of it because the physical fitness test was the first spark for me, allowing me to compete and later master. Once I accomplished that, I thought I’ll actually keep this up, because the exercise simply feels good. So I started running and I kept running!”

When his draft number was called, Bergeson took advantage of his engineering background and enlisted via the Civilian Acquired Skills Program, with the support of his father Donald. The elder Bergeson had served as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army, was wounded in the Pacific Theater and earned a Purple Heart. A busy dairy farmer with four children, Donald Bergeson was reticent about his own service record with his family but assured his son that the Army would be good for him. And so it was. MAJ Bergeson (Ret.) shares that on the last day of basic, his name was called to board a bus bound for Fort Sam Houston, Texas where he would train as a combat medic before deployment to Germany. While he says he had no interest in becoming a medic, and preferred working with heavy equipment, it proved a positive experience and he decided to pursue a career as a

Physician’s Assistant. He applied for PA school and joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard as a CW-1 where he was assigned for 17 years to an Infantry Battalion. “When my two years was up, I joined the National Guard and was studying to become a PA. Based on my PT test, the state called and asked me if I would run the Lincoln (NE) Marathon as part of the Wisconsin Army National Guard team because of my fitness test performance in the National Guard as well. I ended up running with their marathon team for 10 years, but for that first one, I only had 10 days to train!” Throughout the process, Dale also ran the Army Ten-Miler, traveling to Washington, D.C. with the Wisconsin National Guard team until he retired in 1999. Fondly recollecting, he savored the experience of running through city streets, taking in the Memorials and Monuments along the route. The Wisconsin team always took a day for sightseeing, and Dale took full advantage of the camaraderie, the opportunity to meet other units from across the country and beyond, as well as other military branches, and the manner in which runners supported each other throughout the weekend. During his service, Dale had the opportunity to attend flight surgeon school at Fort Rucker, Ala. and became an Aeromedical PA, eventually serving in Desert Storm in 1990-91 with the 13th Evacuation Hospital.

7

Wisconsin Family

“ATM is a perfect bonding experience for Soldiers, but I didn’t consider continuing to run it until my daughter Tabatha (O’Keefe) suggested that she and I register in 2015 or so. In 2019, her sons Liam [the first year he was eligible, at 16] and Morgan joined us, and the full experience had a tremendous impact on Liam, who had already been talking about joining the Army,” said Dale. Liam, who followed his mother and Dale in running by signing up for cross-country in 7th grade, loved the experience of running his first Army Ten-Miler, but says he is also looking forward to the ATM Expo, which had a big impact on him in 2019 and confirmed his desire to join the Army. Entering his senior year in high school, he is planning to enlist and hopes to attend flight school, eventually becoming a helicopter pilot. He credits a Black Hawk pilot he met at the 2019 ATM Expo with sparking that idea.

8

As one of the youngest runners in his first ATM, was Liam intimidated by the race? “I wasn’t really at all because I was just so excited to be there and experience the race with everyone else,” he said. “I never ran with my grandfather before and I didn’t realize how fast he is. Within the first mile, I was running with my brother Morgan and then Papa just ran past us!”

“ATM is a perfect bonding experience for Soldiers...the full experience had a tremendous impact on Liam, who had already been talking about joining the Army” Dale credits his daughter Tabatha for leading the family runs. “My daughter challenges me and has gotten ahead of me over time. I have been working harder to try to catch back up to her.”

Now Dale and Tabatha have Megan preparing for her first ATM with plans to join Papa’s Crew in D.C. this October. While it may seem like an intimidating endeavor, she has the advantage of joining her family members who are experienced Army Ten-Miler runners who can provide accurate expectations, and even talk through some of their lessons learned.

NOTE: Based on the news of the ATM going virtual, the family was touring Washington, DC on October 10 with plans to run as a family back in Wisconsin upon their return.

Most importantly, as part of her family’s team, she has their support. Together, Papa’s Crew will #RunArmyRunStrong at the 37th Annual ATM.

Team Page FATHER-SON BOND FROM ARMY TEN-MILER INSPIRES WHOLE FAMILY Team Page to Honor Dad’s Running Legacy

Each year, the Army Ten-Miler (ATM) draws in competitors from across the country, each with their own inspiration to run. For some, this event provides incredible athletic competition within our nation’s capital. Others love the patriotism, camaraderie, and tradition of the event. And for many, the race is a way for them to honor and pay respect to the men and women who have served. 14

SGM Alfred Page’s motivation was no different. He ran in the ATM annually to honor the soldiers he fought alongside and those who were left behind. Beginning in the late eighties, US Army Sergeant Major (SGM, retired) Alfred Page ran in more than 30 Army Ten-Milers (including last year’s virtual race).

“Besides Christmas, Easter, and our birthdays, this was the best time me and my dad spent together one on one.” In 1996, his son Todd began training and running the ATM alongside his father, forging a special bond between the two. Todd notes that “Besides Christmas, Easter, and our birthdays, this was the best time me and my dad spent together one on one.” The pair ran in the ATM to strengthen their relationship, test their endurance, pray for the country and show their support and respect for all service members. For the first time in over 20 years, Todd will not run this race alongside his father, but rather with Team Page, preserving and honoring SGM Page’s incredible legacy.

At just 19 years old, Alfred Page was drafted into the Army to serve his country in the Vietnam War. Page initially served as a combat medic in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne and the 1st Infantry Division. Shortly before he was drafted, he married Connie Hines Page, and they were happily together for 52 years. While in Vietnam, Connie gave birth to their first born, Todd. Upon returning from the war, Page decided to reenlist in the Army, taking his young family to posts including Fort Campbell, Ky., Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and Mainz Germany. Eventually, he was transferred for his final assignment to Washington, D.C., stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital, rising to the post of Non-Commissioned Officer-in-Charge (NCOIC) of the operating room.

15

Team Page

“When I run the ATM in October, I know that I will feel like my dad is with me. Army Ten-Miler Sunday will remain one of the most special days of the year.” Although Page was always a runner, moving to the Military District of Washington ignited a stronger passion for running and a desire to compete. During this time, Page and his family lived in Silver Spring, Md. Rather than driving to Walter Reed’s former campus in Northwest D.C., Page opted to leave his house around 3:00 a.m. each morning and run to work. 16

After 22 years of hard work and meaningful service, Page retired from the military and moved to his wife’s hometown of Louisville, Ky. Their son Todd was both an engineering student and an NCAA basketball player at the University of Louisville (he played under the legendary Denny Crum!). Moving away from Washington did not stop Page from participating in the ATM. In fact, he travelled back to DC each year for the ATM. Once both Todd and his sister, Lynn Brooks, moved back to Maryland, Page also returned to the area to be closer to his children and grandchildren.

Alfred Page was an inspiration to his family for his faith, his tenacity, and his love and respect for those around him. Todd notes, “He loved God, his family, his country, the Army, and then the Army Ten-Miler.” This year, Todd and his dad registered for the ATM, but Alfred Page succumbed to cancer in July following a courageous battle – just one month after the sudden death of his wife, Connie. Page’s impact inspired Todd and Margie to gather family members and create Team Page, consisting of their siblings, Margie’s husband, and six of Alfred’s grandchildren, ages 16-26. Todd recalls that his father “lived his life being focused and disciplined” and that

is the lesson Todd is trying to pass on to Team Page. Among the three members of the team that have not previously participated in a 10-mile race is Todd’s daughter Serena. Together they are training for the race and Todd is passing on his father’s legacy. “When I run the ATM in October, I know that I will feel like my dad is with me. Army Ten-Miler Sunday will remain one of the most special days of the year.” NOTE: Team Page ran on October 10 in Washington, D.C, along the same course that Todd and his Dad covered in 2020, passing all of the same monuments with the entire team ending at the Vietnam wall.

THANKS TO ALL WHO DEFEND FREEDOM.

Every day, the commitment of the men and women who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces ensures the freedom and security of our nation. Boeing is honored to support them and thank them for their service.
