IC Lights T M. Anastassiades This collection explores balance. There is a series of lights: table lights, wall lights, ceiling pendants and ceiling mounted lights which take as their basic form a sphere that is perfectly balanced on the edge of a rod. I came across an online video clip of a contact juggler. He was spinning a set of spheres, moving them around on his arms and edge of his fingers. And as I got mesmerized by the magic of his skill, suddenly the spheres look perfectly still. I wanted to capture that exact moment. This was my starting point. The initials IC come from the codes that English police use to define the perceived ethnicity of a person they stop in the street when reporting back to the station. IC1 means white person or Northern European type, IC2 means Mediterranean European/Hispanic, IC3 indicates an African/Afro-Caribbean person, and so on, so this is a playful story to define the different designs. http://www.flos.com/consumer/en/products/table/ic_lights

Arco Achille Castiglioni “We were thinking about a lamp that shines light onto a table. They already existed, but you had to walk round them. To leave enough space around the table, the base had to be at least two meters away. Which was how the idea for Arco came into being. We wanted to make it with commercially available parts and we found that curved steel angle iron worked perfectly well. Then there was the problem of the counterweight: a heavy weight was needed to support it all. Our first thought was concrete, but then we chose marble because the same weight took up less space, and also because we could obtain a better finish for a lower cost. Ipnos Nicoletta Rossi and Guido Bianchi By taking away no longer needed elements from the traditional lantern, we ended up with a simple metal box, supporting invisible light sources. A void that is filled by the surrounding space. An indoor and outdoor LED floor lamp composed of an ultra-light skeleton of thin extruded aluminium profiles, emanating diffused luminosity. Homune michael young Homune is a sophisticated glass design solitaire – a functional table compounded of a hand-blown table leg in amber color and a hand-blown table top from clear crystal. Lasvit team first developed specific blowing technology based on a 3D visual to reach the right shape of Michael Young´s design. After understanding the specifics of his design the team created special steel molds to have the glass be blown into. The table leg is made of 36 separate glass fractals, with 6 different forms repeating 6 times. A large glass sphere is blown with a multitude of haphazard interior cavities, which intersect and collide with each other in unpredictable ways. Maxim found inspiration among the shards of ice created by nature and applied that element of natural randomness to his craft in the context of glassmaking. Conclusion: Well-designed lighting is one of the most important design elements that will support an individual’s ability to perform normal daily activities and decrease the level of disability associated with these impairments. Daylight contains the spectrum to which the circadian clock is most sensitive and provides higher light levels during the day. Easily accessible outdoor gardens encourage individuals outside, providing the necessary regular exposure to direct bright light that sunlight provides. The combination of good interior lighting and regular daylight exposure contributes to regaining and maintaining an active and fulfilling lifestyle – greatly improving quality of life. Lighting design is an art and a science. This is true for many components of our built environments. Designers are concerned about the aesthetics, the art of lighting. It also means utilizing an enormous body of technical knowledge, and updating due to new technology, the science of lighting. But most importantly, lighting is for people, so there must be an understanding of the visual quality users need for health, safety, and enjoyment.
