publisher’snote
It seems that the year is running away with us again. Working to finalize the 2nd Quarter Edition of the Women’s Journal, I can’t help but pray that 2016 will go a little slower and that God will be gentle with us, both personally and professionally throughout 2016. Many changes have been happening with the Women’s Journal, and one is that with the addition of the Kent County Paper to my County Women’s group I now have the ability to offer many of our contributors a much broader avenue to market their companies throughout Delaware. And more importantly, I have the opportunity to work with the wonderful dynamic people of Kent County once again. Please note that starting with this issue, the Kent County Women’s Journal has gone quarterly and will be published four times a year beginning with the April/May/June 2016 Issue. Over the last several years I have moved all of our publications to quarterly to save on the cost of production, which also allows our contributors an easier way of educating by only having to write four articles instead of six a year. Our distribution is done continually throughout the three months of each cycle. In the last couple of weeks, I have had two wonderful visits from my grandchildren, and it gives me the feeling that maybe it is time to slow down and be a dotting Mimi. It certainly gives me that warm feeling of love that comes with cuddling my newest grandson Cooper, and listening to the laughter of Christian, who is 10 and Hannah Mae my 14-year-old, and realizing that time has gone way too fast from when my oldest grandson was the size of Cooper. “Advice” from the rocking chair, slow down and enjoy your family and friends. Make a difference in the lives of the ones you love. This issue our People in Profile are all leaders with many of our non-profit organizations in the State of DE. Please check out their complete profiles on pages 20-23. Thanks to all our wonderful contributors for your support of the County Women’s Journal. The County Women’s Journal is available in medical buildings, hospitals, doctors’ offices, recreation centers, libraries, bookstores, coffee shops, hair salons, supermarkets, thousands of homes and many other local businesses. Can’t put your hands on a copy? Just call us so we can help. Pamela Rizzo, Publisher On The Cover... We would like to thank The Old State House, for hosting our profile shoot for the Kent County Women’s Journal. This beautiful facility located at 25 The Green, Dover, DE 19901. his is the 3rd part in our 3-part series of “most common questions” we answer for our patients at Orthodontics on Silver Lake (OSL). I hope this has been an informative Q+A for our Women’s Journal readers. My OSL team and I are committed to offering optimum experiences and excellent results for all of our patients. Call us at 302-672-7776, or check out our website at www. doverorthodontics.com, to schedule the start of your new smile with Dr. Steckel.

I will begin my treatment as a minor but reach the age of majority during treatment. How will this affect the course of my treatment? Rules may vary by the state you live in. When you become an adult, we ask you to confirm who we can communicate with about your treatment, which usually includes your parents.

Will orthodontic treatment interfere with playing
sports? Nope! We do recommend, however, that patients protect their appliances and their smiles by wearing mouth guards when playing sports. We can supply you with one; just ask!
About Dr. Steckel Dr. Stephanie Steckel is a diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics, and started her Dover orthodontic practice in 1995. She is a graduate of UCLA School of Dentistry, and she completed her postdoctoral specialty education at the Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta, Georgia. At Orthodontics on Silver Lake (OSL) in Dover, she and her OSL team provide excellent orthodontic experiences and results for her patients. The science behind orthodontic treatment continues to evolve, in many cases resulting in greater comfort and predictability for our patients. Dr. Steckel’s experience as a general dentist prior to specializing means more coordinated care with your family dentist. Our OSL team is also proud to support the local community in numerous educational, sports and volunteer activities.
14.
Will orthodontic treatment interfere with playing an instrument? No, but there will be an initial period of adjustment. Covers or wax can be used to prevent lip and cheek pain and discomfort. Let us know if you play an instrument and we’ll teach you how to apply the wax!
I’m afraid I won’t be able to afford treatment. Do you offer payment plans?
15.
We offer zero interest payment plans for our patients. The cost of treatment depends on the complexity of the case and the duration of treatment planned. You will be able to discuss fees and payment options before treatment begins. We have payment plans to suit different budgets, including a no-down-payment option. We work hard to make orthodontic care affordable for everyone.
Yes. Keeping braces and other appliances clean requires a little more effort. Dr. Steckel and her OSL team will give you special instructions on how to brush and floss, how often to do so, and information on any dental products and tools that may be helpful to you. Be sure to avoid hard, sticky, sugary foods and sodas, and continue to see your general dentist for routine checkups and cleanings!

Hello Sunshine! S
pring and summer coming around means a few things to us here at Vision Quest Eye Care Center. The most important though is sun protection! A great pair of sunglasses is much more than a fashion accessory. Sunglasses help protect your eyes against a varying group of aliments such as: cataracts, macular degeneration, and even eye cancer. There are many types of sunglasses but some helpful tips as to what to look for will lead anyone in the right direction. As an eye care provider, most of our patients ask for the benefits of polarization. Polarization is the best sun protection you can get for your eyes. Not only is it 100% UVA and UVB protection but it adds additional glare protection that a standard tint does not. Glare that you would encounter while driving, on the water, or while doing any number of outside activities is horizontal. Polarization helps eliminate most of this while providing comfort and the eye protection you need. If cost is a factor when looking for a pair of sunglasses, then search for UV protection and coverage. Making sure all UV rays are blocked will make your sunglasses effective in their job. However, if you ask us, you can never spend too much on eye protection.
Another question we find our patients asking is if it is more important to wear sunglasses as you get older? The answer is that it is important for people of all ages to wear sunglasses. Children and adults alike can feel the effects of sun exposure on the eyes so it is important for everyone to have a pair of shades handy. In fact, most UV exposure occurs under the age of eighteen. Lastly, sunglasses are not something that should only be reserved for summer wear. Sunglasses will benefit you the most if they are used all the time. The suns rays have the same effect during the summer as they do in the winter. Cloudy days are also something that should not fool you. Sun protection is something that should be practiced everyday to make sure that your eyes are as healthy as can be.

Is It An Allergy—Or Is It A Cold? 3. Are your eyes watery and itchy? Allergens can inflame the clear membrane covering your inner eyelid and eyeball. 4. Are you free of a fever? Allergies don’t cause fevers, but colds can. 5. Is the nasal discharge thin and clear? By contrast, a thick, yellow or green discharge may accompany a cold.1
By Zahir Kasmani Pharmacist and Owner
S
pring has sprung—or it’s just about to. That means spring allergies are “blooming,” too. But sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between a cold and a seasonal allergy, also known as hay fever. Here are some signs to look for and ways to find relief.
Know the signs
Both colds and allergies can cause sneezing, stuffiness, or a runny nose. But there are telltale differences between a cold and seasonal allergy. Ask yourself these five questions. The more times you answer “yes,” the greater the chance the culprit is a seasonal allergy.1 1. Are plants starting to flower (or leaves starting to fall?) A change of season means this is more likely an allergy— your body’s response to airborne allergens (substances such as pollen that cause allergies). Colds are most common in winter months, and are caused by viruses that show up in any environment. 2. Did your symptoms appear suddenly and last more than a week? Cold symptoms tend to appear more gradually but go away more quickly.
Limit triggers
Birch, cedar, cottonwood, and pine are big allergy triggers in the spring. The other plants that cause problems depend upon where you live. Just when you’re itching to get outdoors after a long winter, you may be better off staying inside. Try to limit your outdoor activities on days with high pollen counts—especially between 10 am and 4 pm, when pollen counts are highest. Windy days are the worst because wind can really kick up the pollen. You can find pollen counts for your area through the National Allergy Bureau (NAB). Here you can also sign up for personalized email pollen alerts.2 In addition, keep windows closed at home and in your car. For extra protection, you might try adding a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter to your furnace or air conditioner. It also helps to take an afternoon or early evening shower to keep pollen off your pillow. Likewise, at the end of the day, wipe off any pets that have been outdoors. And, take off your shoes before coming inside to keep from tracking in pollen.3,4

Allergy relief aid
So right about now, you may be thinking: But how do I get relief? I can advise you about over-thecounter (OTC) remedies. Antihistamines treat symptoms such as sneezing and itchy nose or throat. Nasal or oral decongestants can help with nasal stuffiness. Eye drops relieve itchiness. Please don’t hesitate to ask me any questions you have about side effects or how long you can safely use these drugs. If OTC drugs don’t do the trick, you might want to see an allergist, a doctor who specializes in treating allergies. Some people need other medications or allergy shots to feel better.4 Nothing herein constitutes medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, or is a substitute for professional advice. You should always seek the advice of your physician or other medical professional if you have questions or concerns about a medical condition. A 20-Minute Solution For Women With Stress Urinary Incontinence A
bout half of all women experience stress incontinence -- losing urine when they cough, laugh, sneeze or exercise -- at some point in life. It’s a common problem in women of all ages, including women in their 20s. Many women tell us stress incontinence limits their ability to work out or enjoy an active social life. Fortunately, there are many treatment options to consider. Women owe it to themselves to talk to a urogynecologist, a doctor who is specially trained to treat pelvic floor disorders and bladder problems, who can partner with them to explain the various nonsurgical and surgical treatment options to find the right choice. Many women find relief by simply adopting a few healthy habits such as
losing weight or performing exercises that strengthen the pelvic floor.
Minimally invasive sling However, behavior modification doesn’t resolve the issue for everyone. For those patients, surgical intervention is a highly successful alternative.
Since the 1990s, small devices known as midurethral slings have been effectively treating women who suffer from stress incontinence. There are studies that have followed patients for 15 years and show more than a 95% success rate. That translates to a significant improvement in lifestyle, as women no longer have to worry about leaking urine when they laugh, sneeze or exercise. In fact, the comment
we hear most often from patients who have had the sling procedure is: “I wish I had done this sooner!” The small sling, made from polypropylene mesh, is inserted through an incision in the vagina – using an advanced, minimally invasive surgical technique. There are no cuts to the abdomen and most women have very little pain. This procedure is the recognized worldwide standard of care for the surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence, according to a position statement by the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS) and the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU). Additionally, although the FDA issued a safety communication regarding vaginal mesh for pelvic organ prolapse,
You will meet highly skilled and caring physicians who are the only urogynecologists in Delaware who have completed fellowships and are board-certified in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery.
Babak Vakili, M.D., is the director of the Christiana Care Center for Urogynecology and Pelvic Surgery. Dr. Vakili completed his fellowship in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at the Louisiana State University Health Science Center.

Howard B. Goldstein, D.O., MPH, is a urogynecologist with the Christiana Care Center for Urogynecology and Pelvic Surgery. Dr. Goldstein completed his fellowship in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey.
the FDA has clearly stated that the polypropylene mid-urethral sling is safe and effective in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence.
Making the decision
We perform the surgery in an outpatient center and the procedure is quick—about 20 minutes, in all. Patients don’t usually require general anesthesia or a breathing tube. Because this surgery is minimally invasive, patients can resume daily activities within 24 hours, such as driving, returning to work or taking a shower. Most patients report very little pain, only a bit of discomfort that is treated with over the counter pain medication. But, the best news is that improvement for incontinence is usually immediate. Many patients
8
It’s amazing what a huge impact a simple surgery can have on women’s lives. So who should consider a sling? For most women, that decision can occur as soon as stress incontinence begins interfering with their daily lives. We are here to consult with patients about an approach that will work for each woman as an individual.

A Less Invasive Approach To Hysterectomy menopause in younger patients. Hysterectomies have greatly advanced in recent years. In the past, most women had an operation to remove the uterus through a 5-inch to 7-inch cut in the lower abdomen, often leaving a large scar. Today’s minimally invasive techniques allow our patients to recovery quickly after a hysterectomy and get back to normal activities, generally in a few weeks instead months. This is a significant consideration for many women who don’t want to take additional time off from work, or who are worried about child care.

he most common reason for a woman to have a hysterectomy is fibroids, which are noncancerous growths in the uterus that can cause pain, bleeding, pelvic pressure and difficulty emptying the bladder. ave you noticed changes in your face and skin over time? Have you noticed fine lines of expression turn into permanent wrinkles? Have you felt a decrease in the vitality of your skin? Have you wanted to do something about it, but don’t know where to start? Chadds Ford Wellness can help. Aging of the skin of the face is affected by numerous factors including sun damage, gravity, life long stress, waning hormones, improper nutrition, poor maintenance, and the list goes on. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a safe, effective, natural treatment out there that did not leave you looking completely overdone and plastic like some neurotoxin and filler treatments? Now there is. Chadds Ford Wellness is now specializing in The Vampire Facelift® procedure, which was invented by Dr. Charles Runels in 2011. It was made famous by the Kardashians when Kim received a Vampire Facial on the show. It is now a fairly common procedure offered throughout the country by an elite group of physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners that have all been thoroughly trained by Charles Runels, MD. The Vampire Facelift® involves specific injections of both small amounts of dermal hyaluronic acid fillers and your own concentrated blood platelets. Your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. This creates a substance called platelet rich plasma (PRP). The PRP is then activated to release growth factors that are a part of the body’s wound-
healing cascade when it is injected in the skin of the face. Pain is minimalized with topical numbing cream, a numbing agent in the filler injections, and small needles. Over the next year, the body works to restore the collagen content of the skin of your face as well as the fat underneath the skin that is lost with aging. It also creates new blood vessels to help increase blood flow to the face. This improves the texture of the skin and helps the treatment last up to 2 years. By artistically sculpting the face with dermal fillers combined with PRP we are able to use less filler making it a much safer procedure and creating a more natural look. By using PRP we are getting to the root cause of the aging process and improving the sagging, wrinkles, texture, and color changes that attribute to making us look older.
Dr. Brian Shiple is a highly accomplished sports medicine and family practice board certified physician. Dr. Shiple is one of the leading interventional regenerative medicine physicians on the east coast and uses platelet rich plasma and adult stem cells for the healing of musculoskeletal conditions. He has been practicing age management wellness and aesthetic medicine for over 8 years. He has been in practice for 22 years and is a highly sought after speaker, educator, and author. Kelly Shiple is a certified physician assistant who practices aesthetic medicine under the supervision of Dr. Brian Shiple. She graduated from the University of Delaware with a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology. Kelly attended Nova Southeastern University in Orlando, FL where she received her master’s degree of medical science and physician assistant studies. She is trained to perform neurotoxin, dermal filler, and aesthetic PRP injections.
Testimonials:
“This is the only office in the area doing the Vampire Facelift. The doctor and physician assistant were very professional and easy to talk to. I quickly felt comfortable, with their goal of personalized care and lasting results for every patient. They were both very knowledgeable and able to answer all of my questions without making me feel rushed. The vampire facial has done wonders for my skin. My friends and family have noticed a difference in my skin’s appearance. It is tighter, smoother and more radiant. The texture is refined and more youthful. I am 4 weeks out and I am still seeing improvements happening every day. The Vampire Facelift is the gift that keeps on giving. I would highly recommend the Vampire Facelift at Chadds Ford Wellness.” - Karen L, Kennett Square, PA

“Why Should I Care?”
By Michael Waite Director, Marketing & Community Relations
I
’ll never need it, so why should I give…why should I donate blood?
There are approximately 20,000 patients a year that are treated with the lifesaving products that generous donors give every day in the Delmarva region that could probably easily answer that question. But how does that affect you? Why should you be concerned? You’ve never needed blood. Are you absolutely sure that one of those 20,000 patients won’t be a family member, friend, neighbor or even yourself? Of course not, because none of us can predict what’s going to happen in the next five minutes, hours, days or years. Accidents don’t happen because people want them to, that’s why they’re called accidents and that’s why the Blood Bank of Delmarva works tirelessly every day to be prepared. It’s not my intention to sound alarmist, but this is why it’s critical that Blood Bank of Delmarva continuously collects the blood that supplies all the hospitals in our area, the hospitals you or your family members would be taken to should an emergency occur. We don’t take vacations, we don’t take extended holidays because EVERY DAY blood needs to be collected so that it’s ready on hospital shelves to be transfused when the next serious incident happens. But collecting this lifesaving gift is not simply for the purposes of www.TheWomensJournal.com
disaster or trauma. Blood is used to treat a variety of illnesses and diseases: leukemia, those with blood disorders like sickle cell disease, cancer patients, surgical patients, burn victims and so many others. Blood is also used to treat women who experience severe blood loss during childbirth. In fact, complications connected with childbirth can be, per incident, responsible for some of the highest usages of blood. In a rare case in San Antonio, Texas, a woman was given an astonishing 540 units (35 gallons) of blood after delivery complications. Thankfully, she is alive today and raising her child thanks to the selfless act of hundreds of blood donations from complete strangers. We simply call them heroes. But why is it important for YOU to give? You first need to understand that approximately 65% of the US population cannot donate blood. Think about it, that means if you’re in a room with three people only one of the three has the ability to donate… not great odds. Potential donors are deferred from donation for a number of reasons from travel to certain medications and vaccinations, medical conditions, lifestyle and life events and a host of other causes. Of the population that remains eligible to donate, only a small percentage, much less than 10 percent actually do. What’s even more concerning for those of us in the blood industry is that the average age of a blood donor is increasing every day. If blood centers across the country aren’t successful in recruiting younger donors, there may come a time when there won’t be anyone left to donate. And since modern science has yet to develop a substitute for human blood, the results could be devastating. Because of the criticality of our mission, we must do everything in our power to make sure that never happens.
•
You get a mini check-up when you come in
•
You get cookies and juice when you’re done
•
Most importantly, your one donation can save up to three lives
•
That last point is something that will give you great personal satisfaction and directly impact another human being. Blood donation is the most personal and most important gift you’ll ever give, because you’re giving of yourself…literally!

Home Away From Home Delaware Hospice Center M
any Delaware Hospice patients receive care at home, but sometimes there are circumstances that require 24-hour, short-term care to help manage a patient’s symptoms. To accommodate these situations, Delaware Hospice patients are welcomed to stay at the Delaware Hospice Center. Since its opening in 2008, the Delaware Hospice Center has served thousands of patients with distressing symptoms such as: uncontrolled pain, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, agitation or restlessness. The state-of-the-art facility includes 16 private patient and family suites, family style kitchens, children’s play areas, living rooms, a Family Support Counseling Center, and a meditation room. With roundthe-clock care, caregivers are given peace of mind knowing that their loved one’s needs are immediately addressed. Caregivers don’t have to be nurses at the Delaware Hospice Center . . . they can just be a spouse, child, or loved one. But it’s not just about comforting the patient. At the Delaware Hospice Center, the needs of a patient’s family and loved ones are also addressed. The Center has unlimited visiting hours, offering caregivers a chance to check on their loved one at any time. They also have counselors and chaplains on staff to meet with families to discuss the various stages of end-of-life and the bereavement process. Once a patient’s symptoms are properly controlled, they are often transitioned back into their home. Peace of mind is the common theme of patients and families who have visited the Delaware Hospice Center. The Center becomes a comforting place where patients and families come to learn about managing medications, pain and the end-of-life process. While all individuals with a life-limiting illness are eligible for hospice care, the Delaware Hospice Center is specifically designed for patients who temporarily require a higher level of specialized care. To better understand this option of care, and our other services (Transitions and Delaware Palliative) just give us a call.

Adult Day Care Is The Right Fit For The Whole Family By Natalie Scott
Y
ou’re not alone. According to the National Family Caregivers Association, more than one quarter of the adult population has provided care to a family member or friend during the past year.
After having a heart attack and a stroke, 64-year-old Diane, was no longer able to work. She started to become depressed sitting at home all day, so when she heard about the adult day program at Easter Seals, she told her daughters she wanted to give it a try. Now she happily spends her days among
friends, enjoying her time out in the community and the feeling of independence that it brings. “My mom used to sit at home and cry all day because she was so depressed,” Diane’s daughter, Kim, says. “Easter Seals helps her a lot. It helps keep her involved in her community.” The Easter Seals adult day care program serves adults who have experienced a disabling condition such as Multiple Sclerosis, stroke, brain injury, other physical limitations and conditions of aging. Transportation and meals are provided to the participants. The program provides a break from caregiving for families or those who work and have other responsibilities. Nursing care is provided to all participants. A full time nurse provides medical support including monitoring of blood pressure and blood sugar, coordinating with physician offices and arranging appointments. The nurse acts as a liaison between participant families, case managers and other health care providers. Easter Seals provides physical, occupational and speech therapies on site, which, if needed, can be added to the individual’s personal care plan. In addition, trained staff are able to help all participants with activities of daily living and personal needs “I’d be lost without Easter Seals. It is very nice,” says Diane, who comes to Easter Seals five days a
week. “I enjoy going out shopping, out to eat and to church with my friends from Easter Seals.” Easter Seals provides choices when a loved one needs assistance with daily living, and wants to remain living at home. Participants are encouraged to choose from a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, exercise, community trips, computer access and more. “My mom is always doing something different when I go to Easter Seals. She does a little of everything,” Kim says. “She is sad when she isn’t there.” Like all Easter Seal services, the adult day care services are comprehensive and individualized to meet each client’s needs, familyfocused to meet each family member’s concerns and have the goal of enhanced independence. The adult day care program offers a break for family caregivers responsible for a relative who is unable to function independently, but does not require 24-hour nursing care.
Easter Seals is located at 61 Corporate Circle, New Castle, DE 19720. Please visit our website and see all of our services for people of all ages and abilities: www.de.easterseals.com.

Ovarian Cancer...What All Women (and Those Who Love Them) Need to Know! Each year more than 21,000 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed in the United States, resulting in over 15,500 deaths. It is the deadliest of the gynecologic cancers, affecting approximately 1 in 70 women. Because there is no reliable diagnostic screening, it often goes undetected or is misdiagnosed until it has advanced to the later stages. Less than 20% of cases are discovered in the early stage. Due to late diagnoses and a very high recurrence rate (70-90%), less than 50% of women make it to the 5 year milestone.
Ovarian cancer does not discriminate and can affect females of any age and ethnic background. It continues to be one of the most underfunded cancers and the lack of public awareness and education is of critical concern. Although the symptoms of ovarian cancer often are not intense in the early stages, they are NOT silent. Once thought to be a ‘silent disease’, research indicates that 95% of women DO have vague but persistent symptoms. These symptoms are not always useful for diagnosis since they may be indicative of other less serious conditions. If any of the following single or combination of symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, consult your physician and insist that a manual exam and transvaginal ultrasound be performed. If any abnormalities are detected, a referral to a gynecologic oncologist may be in order. • Bloating • Pelvic or abdominal pain • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly • Urinary symptoms (frequency or urgency) Other symptoms may include: • Extreme fatigue • Indigestion, heartburn, or upset stomach • Shortness of breath • Lower back and/or leg pain • Change in bowel habits (constipation, diarrhea) • Unexplained weight gain or loss • Menstrual irregularities (including post menopausal bleeding) • Pain during intercourse
A PAP Test does NOT detect ovarian cancer!
cancer survivor diagnosed in 2003, founded the Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation in 2009 as the only local premier all-volunteer non-profit ovarian cancer organization. She currently serves as President and is a recipient of the 2013 Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Award. Previously she served as Delaware Chapter President of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. As one ovarian cancer survivor stated...”Dorianne’s passion has converted her personal illness of ovarian cancer into a healthy, vital, supportive and expanding volunteer organization promoting ‘Hope for the Present and a Cure for the Future”.
Did You Know… Even if your ovaries have been removed, it is possible to develop Primary Peritoneal Cancer (PPC), a rare form of cancer, which is closely related to ovarian cancer. The peritoneum is a thin sheet of tissue that protects and supports the abdominal organs. When certain cells transform into cancerous cells, the result is PPC. The cause is not known. Symptoms are more gastrointestinal in nature and may include: · abdominal bloating · changes in bowel habits · an early feeling of fullness after eating Nausea and vomiting may occur when bloating is severe. Medical evaluation and treatment is the same as for ovarian cancer and recurrences are common. There is no screening for PPC.

Spring Clean Your Body with Supplements that Really Work
Facials and Weather Damage
Springtime weather in Delaware is unpredictable. Our clinical aestheticians will guide you through the best practical daily skin routine for your needs and life. Consider a facial for aging skin, damaged skin, dry skin, and acne. Facials address immediate concerns in addition to protecting against future breakouts and weather damage. Add a peel to your facial; it’s an excellent way to exfoliate, leaving your face soft and smooth. Exfoliating may also soften the appearance of wrinkles.
People who are wondering whether they should take supplements should schedule an appointment with our Quantum Reflex Analysis practitioners, Lisa Torbert or LaDonna Graham. Supplements balance and repair the bodies by detoxing and strengthening the immune system. The hour-long QRA test will let your body pick the exact nutrients and precise amounts it truly needs. Our supplement store carries a premier line of supplements that are organic, in BPA free containers, with no toxic tagalongs.
Microdermabrasion is a procedure that diminishes imperfections like sun damage, blemishes and fine lines. This procedure uses tiny and rough grains to buff away your surface layer of dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion is highly recommended if you have acne prone and blotchy skin, small scars, rhytides, keratoses, large pores, milia, or sebaceous hyperplasia.
For more information call 302) 678-3433 or visit www.heathersholistichealth.com Purchase a copy of Why Can’t I Lose Weight? Toxins available in our store, or online at Amazon and Kindle. Author and owner of Heather’s, Lisa Torbert, healed from 17 diseases and lost 35 lbs naturally! This is the perfect handbook for anyone serious about weight loss and taking control!
Cleanse Your Body from the Inside Out
Colon hydrotherapy is a gentle, natural method of washing long-term wastes from the entire colon. After the process, the body no longer has to deal with waste accumulated during a lifetime, and can use more of its own strength to heal itself and fight disease. Virtually everyone has these built-up wastes in their colon, especially from eating processed and fast foods, white flour and sugar, pesticides and the chemicals and hormones that are added to many of our foods. Colon hydrotherapy is not painful or dangerous. The pressure felt is less than naturally occurring gas. Research from scientists have demonstrated that people may carry from 10 to 50 pounds of accumulated toxic materials in their colon. Some aliments, which may be relieved are: allergies, colitis, low back pain, halitosis, arthritis, constipation, headaches, indigestion, and lack of energy just to name a few. www.TheWomensJournal.com

Pilates Training The Real Fountain Of Youth “The health of the spine is directly proportional to the age of our body.” - Joseph Pilates your body and spirit young, and it does so in very specific ways. Here are just some of the ways Pilates is a veritable fountain of youth, in no particular order:
1. Breathing
By Nancy Hawkins Rigg Founder and Owner, Forever Fit Foundation
A
Pilates teaches you to breathe fully and deeply. Oxygen saturation to your cells has been shown to improve energy as well as cognitive abilities. That means no more tired, sluggish, forgetfulness regardless of your age.
4. Alignment
ging can cause many people to slow down, whether consciously or unconsciously. Don’t assume that growing old means you can’t or don’t have to be active! Joseph Pilates, who developed the Pilates workout method, said “we retire too early and we die too young, our prime of life should be in the 70’s and old age should not come until we are almost 100!”
2. Full Body Exercise
Pilates is a total system of exercises which is designed to build your body’s core strength gradually through balancing, stretching and correct breathing techniques. Core strength exercise is vital as we get into middle age and beyond. Pilates truly keeps
Each movement in Pilates promotes full range of motion of the joints. Such exercises lubricates joints and preserves healthy tissues for the long haul. Maintaining the ability to sit, stand, kneel and bend is the key to longevity and well-being.
Pilates teaches you to work within a safe frame and strengthens the body symmetrically with each exercise. Real life happens to all of us. Our workouts should counter our daily activities and compensate for asymmetries we impose upon ourselves. Keeping your body aligned staves off injuries and allows for better all over mobility.
Pilates training is based on low reps and good form with each move. You’ll avoid poor body mechanics and repetitive stress injuries. Addressing all body parts equally keeps the body symmetrically strengthened and mobile for decades.
3. Complete Range of Motion
5. Transitions
Pilates training focuses in on transitions between moves and within moves, training the body and mind to control your movements no matter what. With less haphazard moves, you’ll avoid unwanted incidents and injuries.
When it comes to safe exercise Pilates tops the list. Strengthening your body’s core improves your flexibility. Stiffness and lack of fluid movement are often associated with an aging body. Core muscles protect your spine and build bone density and strength which is vital for older individuals and essential to keep the risk of osteoporosis and back problems at bay. You will stay active and even your mood will be better thanks to the exercise. Pilates is the best antiaging exercise system you can carry on doing for many years.

s your commitment and resolve for change that inspired you at New Year’s quickly fading along with the long winter nights? It happens to almost everyone - change can be hard. To get back on track you need renewal of your spirit and vitality, which you can do with the right understanding of your path. Find deeper meaning in your wholeness to understand your path of healing. The seasonal energies of spring are all about rapid expansion, fecundity and novelty. The burgeoning flora show us the fever pitch rate at which life wants change. It seems like overnight, the trees flush with vibrant green buds, song birds serenade the dawn and a warm breeze flushes your cheeks in time for tulips and daffodils to rise up. You see, nature wants you as well to go and do — to be your most fantastic, radiant self! There is a little secret to harness the energy of spring, though. If you really want lasting change, it requires surrender. You may think surrender is all about giving up, giving in, accepting defeat or more bluntly, losing. Who wants to be a loser? Well that’s not really what surrender means. There is no white flag here. Surrender is really a way to release and let go - a way to enable change. Surrender accepts present circumstances, recognizes the futile urge to fight the reality of what is and marks a shift in awareness towards unity and connection. Surrender is not a power play of control. Surrender is a decision to change your attitude that allows healing to occur. So, let go of your incessant need for control. When your willingness and openness for growth and healing replace an iron-clad willpower, the gates of true healing swing wide open. Take yourself out of the center of every equation and get ready for a miraculous www.TheWomensJournal.com
Surrender is in fact a set of behaviors, attitudes and emotions filled with courage, hope, wisdom and community because you are accepting outside help. You have the advantage of holistic health and alternative modalities to empower your growth. There are so many wonderful therapies and tools to assist you in learning to surrender and to be supported in the healing process.. This can be from friends and family, doctors, therapists, counselors, sponsors and most importantly from a higher power. You are truly not alone, separate or disconnected - not ever. Spring reminds you that surrender is beautiful, empowering and inevitable. Terri Brisbane
Originally from Maryland, Terri Brisbane and her family relocated to Kent County in 2005 and immediately began to enjoy life living in Delaware. After a few years, she was presented with the opportunity to join Delaware Hospice as the Medical Account Executive for Kent County. Her focuses are many and includes education on the different programs that Delaware Hospice provides to physicians, hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies, and other community partners in Kent County. She also enjoys the opportunity to meet with families to discuss how Delaware Hospice can help them, regardless of where they are in their journey of care. As a non-profit continuum of care provider, Delaware Hospice offers a wide range of services and programs such as Transitions, Delaware Palliative, Delaware Hospice, The Delaware Hospice Center, Bereavement support including New Hope. Each program offers resources and individual support to educate and provide excellence in end of life care. Terri says the sense of giving in our community is remarkable. She sees this in the volunteers who generously give their time to Delaware Hospice families and also in the many organizations that provide services for those in need throughout Kent County. Terri enjoys volunteering for the American Heart Association’s Heart Ball and is currently a Board Member with the Delaware End of Life Coalition. One of the advantages of working for Delaware Hospice has been the ability to work side by side with many exceptional clinicians. The compassion that she has witnessed not only for patients in the care of Delaware Hospice, but also for those families during many stages of their end of life journey has been inspirational. It is with this inspiration that Terri decided to pursue her own nursing degree and is currently a student at Delaware Technical Community College in Georgetown. There isn’t always a lot of free time, but when there is, Terri enjoys making the most out of it. It’s great to spend time with friends and family while enjoying the many outdoor activities that Delaware living has to offer.

Carolina Vano Johnson
Carolina Vano Johnson grew up in Alcoy, Alicante, a city on the east coast of Spain, very close to the Mediterranean. She is the oldest of four children and spent her life divided among the two sides of the Atlantic Ocean. She grew up speaking Spanish and started taking English lessons as a young lady. She traveled as an exchange student to England and the United States to continue her education of English as a second language. In December 2010, she moved to Delaware to reside in Smyrna. She was married and built her life here. Carolina’s siblings, family and friends still live in Spain and Switzerland. Her and husband visit as much as they can. Carolina is a trusted companion in the fight against breast cancer in Delaware. She started working for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition in January 2013 as a part time bilingual navigator, scheduling women for their mammograms and providing them with interpretation if they did not speak English. She became full time in June 2013 and has been with the agency ever since. Today, Carolina spends her days identifying women who are in need of screening mammograms, many of whom may be uninsured or underinsured. She schedules them for mammograms on the Women’s Mobile Health Screening Van and will join the women who request interpretation for their appointments. Carolina also coordinates the scheduling of the mobile mammography van – bringing it to partner locations across the state to provide lifesaving screenings. She maintains a database, prepares reports for agency partners and enrolls and navigates women to financial resources to cover the cost of their screenings when they cannot afford them. If there is a barrier preventing a woman from getting a mammogram Carolina knows how to break it down. She says what she enjoys most about working for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is being able to help women in need.
John Pierson
As Executive Director of our state’s American Heart Association team, John works with his staff and countless volunteers to fight heart disease and stroke. To improve the lives of Delawareans, the AHA works hard to make the healthy choice the easy choice. Thanks in part to the work of his team, Delaware high school students are now receiving instruction on how to deliver “hands only” CPR before graduating. This statewide initiative was adopted just this past fall. “We’re still working hard to get all Delaware school districts the tools they need to get this work done,” said John. The American Heart Association also works closely with every Delaware hospital, providing them with sciencebased treatment guidelines and benchmarks. “This work improves care for every heart and stroke patient in Delaware, but it is work that so few people know about. This is likely where the AHA makes the most significant impact in Delaware,” says John. “The work of the AHA is driven on a national level. We are able to actualize national research and evidence based protocols to make a significant impact locally.” Most importantly, John’s job includes connecting local donors and businesses to the mission work of the AHA. “Our work is funded by donor support. As a charity, we rely on Delawareans to make this work possible.” Local fundraising events include the Heart Ball, Heart Walk and Go Red for Women Luncheon. These events combine fundraising and community awareness. “Statistics show that one of every three women in Delaware will someday pass away because of some type of heart disease. Heart health is an important topic at our Go Red for Women event and the dollars raised fund research specific to women’s heart health,” says John. “Recently my mother was diagnosed with heart disease. It was comforting to refer her to a Doctor who specializes in women’s heart health. This is the work we do at the AHA!”

Kenan Sklenar
This year marks my third year as President/CEO of Easter Seals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore. I was excited to join this prestigious team of passionate people who care so deeply for the people we serve. Each day they touch the lives of so many people with disabilities through our many services, including those in Kent County. Last year, in Kent County alone, we served well over 900 people. I love my job because every day I see people in our programs who benefit greatly from our services, whether they are young children taking first steps towards their future in our therapy program, an adult with intellectual disabilities getting out in the community in our day program or seniors who are remaining safely in their home thanks to our In-Home services. Each individual is treated with respect and dignity. It makes me proud to work for such a great organization making a difference in our local community. I moved from Ohio to Delaware because I wanted the increased challenge and to help grow our programs to serve more people to make an even bigger difference. Our local Easter Seals is much larger than the one I worked at in Ohio. The range of services offered by Easter Seals was enticing to me. We are a leader in our field. My family are huge Disney fans and enjoy taking family trips to Disney World. Two of my children are in college, but they still ask when we are going to Disney World again. Our youngest son has settled into our home in Delaware. He is enjoying making new friends and the challenges of high school. My wife, Kathy, and I are excited to celebrate 29 years of marriage this May. My family loves that Delaware is at the heart of everything. There are so many opportunities available to us by traveling a short distance. I enjoy volunteering in the community. I have already gotten connected with the University of Delaware Health Sciences Program’s Advisory Council and serve on the Executive Committee of DelARF as the Secretary.
Lois Wilkinson
Lois is a calm and reassuring presence in the lives of women (and sometimes men) newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Connecting with them in this way, on a personal level, is what Lois Wilkinson loves best about her work as program manager of education and survivorship in Kent County for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc. (DBCC). “Yes,” she tells them, “you’ll lose your hair and you’ll hate it. But it will grow back.” And “yes,” she may tell them, “having a mastectomy can be devastating. But with reconstructive surgery, and the healing power of time, your body and spirit will be restored.” She reassures these individuals that there is life after breast cancer. She knows first-hand, because Lois Wilkinson is a thirteen year survivor. Lois helps the newly diagnosed patients to connect with other breast cancer survivors, too, through DBCC’s Peer Mentor Support Program, pairing them with trained survivors who have shared similar diagnoses and life situations. She trains new volunteer mentors, and works with physicians and hospitals throughout Delaware to help those beginning their breast cancer journeys. Lois collaborates with physicians on educational programs to help those diagnosed with breast cancer make informed choices and decisions. She is also the key contact with surgeons and oncologists in Kent County to connect their patients with DBCC’s services. In addition, Lois coordinates workshops, educational seminars, and fellowship activities for survivors. She was instrumental in starting the popular “Nurture with Nature,” a program that takes survivors out into nature for time to unwind, heal, relax, to observe beauty, growth and renewal in nature, and to form bonds with other survivors. Lois originally came to DBCC as a volunteer, working on the Southern Lights of Life fundraising event, and became a member of the staff in 2004 – two years after her diagnosis. She is a graduate of the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s Project LEAD program and trained in the science of breast cancer. She was raised in Townsend, DE, is University of Delaware alum, and currently resides in Townsend. In her free time she enjoys gardening, kayaking and traveling. She serves on many community committees and is also a member of the Colonial Dover Rotary Club.

“Shasta Shutterbug” Has Arrived!
By Mike Baker
As the sign says in the camper... GRAB A PROP – STRIKE A POSE! “Shasta Shutterbug” camper photo booth was an idea I saw online from California and Florida. My niece had sent a couple of pictures to me, and I started to research. It’s also something popular in Europe. Most of those are from the back of a VW bus or a similar vehicle. I initially saw this 1969 Shasta Compact Camper for sale about a year ago alongside a local road. Not knowing what I could do with it, I somewhat shelved the thought of buying it. After I had seen these ideas online, I knew I needed that “Shasta.” I was sure it was gone eight months later. I took a 15-minute drive where I saw it previously. There it was still sitting there waiting for me. I immediately jumped on the idea. I purchased the camper and started looking at different ones all over the US. There are not many out there, but I think it will grow. I never realized how big photo booths are. I shoot many weddings throughout the year and starting noticing the appeal. I figured photo booths would be more of a short-term fad and dwindle away. Not true! They are getting more and more popular.
was attending UD while I worked on it and came home to check on it (and my work). I was blessed with a relatively warm fall and winter. I gutted it. You never know what’s underneath until you start pulling it apart. I replaced some rotten walls and rotten floors from 47 years of weathering. Put new ceiling and wall coverings with a hardwood floor. It is decked out with a stereo system inside and outside. The photo booth is built to fit in the area that is left. Courtney just put this up on my facebook page 3 weeks ago. I have made one appearance with it with many raves. It has already been booked for the American Heart Association HeartBall in Dover on April 23rd. We have gotten many bookings already for weddings, gala events and other outdoor events. We also have the standard photo booth, but I think this one has gotten much attention. After all, this is the first one in the First State!
So this was my winter project! Not having any idea what to do, I had my daughter, Courtney, do the designing as I did the engineering and labor. My 21-year-old daughter knew what was “in” more than I did. She 24

Want Lasting Looks?
Permanent Cosmetics May Be For You! lightening. Unfortunately, you may have seen some permanent eyebrows that aren’t the best artistry. That is why choosing the right technician the first time is important – or finding someone with the artistry and skill to do corrections.
By Melisa A. Ferriola, CPCP, LE
G
etting Permanent Cosmetics is rapidly expanding in popularity. The benefits of permanent cosmetics are being discovered by people from all walks of life including professional women, athletes, those with poor eyesight or unsteady hands, those with sensitivities to traditional cosmetics and those whose work precludes wearing makeup. Properly applied permanent cosmetics are so natural your neighbor will never know you have it. Very often people have exclaimed, “This is the best thing I have ever done for myself! I should have done it sooner!” Eyebrows: Are they sparse from over tweezing or a medical condition? Do your eyebrows provide a daily challenge? Do your penciled brows wear off during the day? Permanent Cosmetics may be a solution for you. Eyeliner: Has anyone ever asked if you were tired – when you just didn’t apply any eye makeup? Does your eyeliner smudge and wear off during the day? Permanent Cosmetics may be a solution for you.
Cleanliness – Be sure your technician follows proper OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard Practices and works in a professional environment. Education – The Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP.org) recommends at least a 100 hour course, as well as regular continuing education, and promotes strong ethical standards. Look for the CPCP credentials, as well. Artistry – Review the technician’s portfolio and inquire if this is their own work. Does their work match your own personal style and are you comfortable with the suggestions? Experience is not artistry. Artistry is a gift that cannot be taught. Location – Go the distance. Your best technician maybe 10 minutes from your home or 3 hours away. If possible, make the journey. It will be worth it for the lasting results you are seeking. Cost – More expensive is not always better; cheaper is not always worse. You want a reasonable price that you can afford, that is in line with the technician’s experience, skill and artistry. Ask about what is included in the price quoted. Ask about ongoing maintenance pricing.
Lips: Would you like to restore the natural lip color you had when you were younger? Would you like to understand what can be accomplished toward a more symmetric and fuller appearance? Permanent Cosmetics may be a solution for you.
Why not start your journey with Melisa Ferriola at Lasting Looks. Celebrating 10 years and located in Hockessin, Delaware, Lasting Looks has the required training, skill and artistry. Visit our website at www. lastinglooksforyou.com for more information on Melisa and this service. Consultations are always FREE.
Already have permanent cosmetics? Although considered permanent, your cosmetics will fade over time. Maintenance timing is really your preference, but it is best to get a color boost regularly – every 1 to 3 years – to maintain your Lasting Looks. Are you not happy with your previous work? Lasting Looks has extensive experience correcting existing work – from color correction to shape adjustment to

For The Milestones In Your Life. Diamond Add-A-Links!
By Ron Sayers Graduate, Gemologist (GIA) Ladies love diamonds. Most ladies would love to have a quality diamond bracelet that makes a statement, but that can be a substantial investment that quite often is deferred to a future time. Well how about building it one link at a time, changeable and unique to you, and best of all, affordable now! You are never too young or old to wear diamonds. We have started diamond add-a-link bracelets with just a single diamond as a Christening gift for an infant. More diamonds are then added for events such as Birthdays, Christmas, and Easter. By the time they graduate College they have a completed diamond bracelet any adult would be proud to own and since diamonds are forever she will wear it her entire
life. Add-a-links use very fine quality G-H color VS clarity diamonds with an excellent cut. You can also mix birthstones such as amethyst for February or sapphire for September with the diamonds to give the bracelet a more unique look. There are endless events to give add-a-links. They can be given for major holidays, special birthdays, great grades on the report card, a wedding gift, baby push present or Mother’s Day, and the list goes on. How they work . The bracelet is started with one, two, three or as many links as you would like. These links are made of 14k yellow or white gold and are attached to a gold filled chain which is complimentary when you start a new bracelet (a $139.00 value). As you add links, the gold filled bracelet is shortened to maintain a proper fit. When the bracelet is complete all of the temporary spring bars that attach the links are replaced with solid gold rivets and the bracelet is refinished at no charge to the customer.
Make it custom. With over 100 different links, many of which can be interchanged, you can design the bracelet to suit your personal taste. There are heart shape links, ovals, diamond clusters, single diamonds and strips of diamonds in various shapes, as well as genuine birthstones for any month. Your only limit is your imagination!
Problems solved . Your husband, boyfriend, mother, father , children, brothers and sisters or any other family member will always know what to get you for a special occasion or best of all just because they love you. They only have to ask what is on your wish list because we will have a record of exactly what you would like to add to your bracelet. And wait, there is more! You can complete your jewelry wardrobe with matching rings, earrings or a pendant in the same design as many of the links. So stop by today and let one of our GIA graduate gemologists or other friendly staff members help get you started. The name seemed a perfect fit for our shop of upscale contemporary women’s clothing, while it also gave a nod to the town’s history.” Come soon and meet the women of CHICK’S at Stoney Creek Plaza on Limestone Road in Wilmington, or in our flagship boutique in Chesapeake City, Maryland. We look forward to meeting you and learning your favorite colors, styles and accessory choices. Linda’s first shop, Tattered Treasures in Chesapeake City, featured beautiful classical antiques and architectural salvage with French or Italian flair, gift items and jewelry. That shop gave way to the first CHICK’S, a full-fledged women’s designer apparel shop, always one of the most popular businesses in beautiful Chesapeake City. One step inside and you’ll feel the European flair for great design. CHICK’S uses the coolest display pieces you’ll ever see, from the baby grand piano at the center of the store to creative repurposed display pieces worthy of their own Pinterest page! A Foundation That Could Treat Your Acne? By Ashley Bizzarri, Owner of Customized Cosmetics by Ashley and Custom Blend Specialist
M
ost women who suffer from acne use foundation solely as camouflage, layering it on thick to hide acne. What they don’t realize is they may be making their acne even worse. Caroline Held, the second runner up for 2015’s Miss Delaware Teen Pageant started using a Custom Blended Foundation months before the pageant and shares her experience. What can you tell other girls who may have acne about custom blended foundations? I have struggled with acne for my entire high school career always looking for new makeup to cover up my blemishes. I tried designer makeup and makeup sold at my local drug store. It would get the job done and cover up all my blemishes, but the next morning even more appeared and I was right back where I started. I used to feel the other foundations sinking into my pores and it was heavy and uncomfortable. I would want to take it off within an hour because I knew if I kept it on I would breakout. Custom blended foundation on the other hand I can wear for hours and not feel it at all. Custom blended foundation truly saved my skin. It feels natural and light, unlike the others I tried. It also doesn’t make me break out, something that I personally think is heaven sent!
How did the foundation affect you during your pageant and in pictures? During the Miss Delaware Teen Pageant we had rehearsals that started in the morning and ended at night in full makeup. Usually my skin would get oily and I would expect to have breakouts the next morning from wearing face makeup all day, but when I wore my custom blended foundation I didn’t have a single blemish the morning of the final show.
Natural Glow
Pure Mineral Custom Blended Cosmetics Do You Know What’s In Your Cosmetics? We use all-natural ingredients that don’t irritate the skin and actually help heal damaged skin!
Do You Know When Your Cosmetics Expire? Most large brands don’t specify expiration dates on their cosmetics. We do to ensure you’re using fresh products on your skin.
How long were you wearing the foundation before you started noticing your skin was clearing up? After about two weeks I began to see a difference in my skin. I wouldn’t break out in the morning and I don’t even break out when I have it on when I sweat. Try a Custom Blended Foundation - They are mixed fresh for you at the time of your consultation and we handwrite the expiration date on the bottom of your bottle. Custom blended foundations include botanicals that treat your skin while minimizing the appearance of acne. Because your blend is color matched exactly to your specific skin, you can feel more confident that your acne is being hidden while it is healing.

Do You Have Trouble Finding The Perfect Foundation For Your Skin? A good foundation should be invisible, look like your skin, feel weightless, and it should be good for your skin. The only way to get the absolute best foundation for you is to have one created just for you.

Why I don’t hate spiders... (well...at least as much as I used to.) Have you ever NOT been paying
attention while walking and WHAM, there is a spider web in your face? Yeah, me too.
Cellar Spider Feeds on just about any other insect that may cross it’s path. House centipedes, crickets, ants, termites, and other spiders make up most of its dietary needs.
Orb Weaver Beneficial for garden areas as it catches plenty of pest insects such as stink bugs, boxelder bugs, Japanese beetles and many others.
Spiders help out with the balance of the ecosystem.
Spiders who live in homes help keep unwanted insects out of your house. So the next time you see one, instead of killing it you might want to give this some thought? Would you rather have a bunch of insects coming into your home and flying around everywhere or have the spiders catch them and eat them them for dinner? With a little education, I got over my hatred of spiders and so can you! But I still get freaked out getting a face-full of spider web.
If we got rid of all the spiders in the world, there would be an excessive amount of insects like flies. Each spider, on average, eats about 2,000 insects a year. If all the spiders are gone, then many of these other insects will destroy of our crops. Spiders also are an important part of the diet for birds and lizards. So in a way, if you’re a bird-watcher...you should also be a “spider-thanker!”

Do you have a PEST QUESTION
livescience.com;May 2015
Meet Royal Customer Service Rep Marlene and Pest Professional BJ:
For the most part, spiders aren’t dangerous like many stories and movies would have you believe. You shouldn’t be afraid of spiders. Wolf Spider The wolf spider does not make a web to catch its prey. Very beneficial hunting and eating many pests that can enter your home. Can bite but is of no medical importance.
• All Spiders have 8 legs which makes them arthropods. • Most spiders have 4 sets of eyes. Spiders eat more insects than bats and birds combined. • The color of blood of a spider is light blue. • Spiders do not have teeth. • Spiders do not have muscles, they use hydraulic power to move their limbs. • There are about 40,000 species of spiders in the world. • When making a new web, they will roll up the old one into a ball. Many spiders will eat it. • It is a myth that the average person will swallow any spiders in their sleep.
}
Spiders are very beneficial around the home and in the garden. They eat many insects including aphids, caterpillars, cucumber beetles, flies, grasshoppers, leafhoppers, plant bugs, and thrips.
I remember when I was a young girl, I was in my basement and a spider was crawling all over my arm without me knowing, oh but when I found out... I freaked out! Even the tiniest of spiders scare me. I hate the fact that they can drop down on me, crawl on me with their creepy legs, and make webs wherever they please. Growing up I always hated them. I’m still not crazy about them now but I have a better understanding of why they are on this planet.

Get The Inside Dirt On Spring Cleaning! W
ith spring weather approaching, new fashions appearing, and bright colors blooming, people want that fresh feeling in their homes, as well. Scrubbing baseboards, cleaning inside appliances and washing window sills hardly seem like a way to welcome spring. But with spring cleaning season in full bloom, people are ready for a fresh start and they want their homes to be sparkling clean, as well. This is the perfect time for Kent County homeowners and apartment dwellers to welcome the warmer weather days by ridding their spaces of dust and dirt in those hard-to-reach places. By taking on spring cleaning one task at a time, tackling those activities that often get ignored, and finding ways to make clean-up fun for the whole family, you’ll have a cleaner home in no time and more time to spend enjoying the warmer weather days. While many see spring cleaning as an intimidating project, there are some simple ways to make it manageable and even enjoyable.
Start with a strategy and plan: Map out a plan of attack, formulate a checklist of tasks and knock them out one by one. (Find the room that bothers you the most and start there).
Make sure you have the right tools: To save time and energy, make sure you have the right cleaning supplies. Organize them in a caddy you can carry from room to room so you are never searching for a cleaning item. (Coffee filters are great household tools for cleaning windows. Do not use newspaper – it leaves ink on your hands.) Rubbing alcohol and vinegar is also useful so pay attention to what you have in other cabinets in the house.
Manage expectations:
Give yourself permission to only do the things on your spring cleaning checklist. It’s OK to get these done before weekly chores.
Remove all clutter:
Before you start the cleaning process you must organize and
decide what you throw away, give away and put away.
experienced reliable thorough professional
Windows:
Launder drapes and curtains. Clean shutters and blinds. Remove cobwebs from the top of windows. Make sure to lift windows and clean the tracking. The best way to do that is use a grout brush to quickly loosen dirt, and then finish with a microfiber cloth. Wipe down windowsills, too. Since you’re already working on the windows, be sure to wash them inside and outside.
Beds:
Remove and launder comforters, bedspreads and duvets. Remove sheets and wash the mattress cover. Vacuum and, if possible, steam the mattress. Rotate or flip the mattress. Dust the wall and baseboards behind the headboard, where dust collects.

Protecting Your Property Before, During and After a Flood
By Christen Maroulis
W
hile fire may be the more common concern among homeowners, your home is as much as ten times more likely to be damaged by water than by fire.* According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), floods including inland flooding and flash floods caused by seasonal storms and heavy rains, occur in every region of the United States. In fact, 90% of all natural disasters in the United States involve some type of flooding, estimating nearly $50 billion in economic losses each year.** Living in a high-risk flood zone can increase the likelihood of experiencing a flood, but being outside a high-risk zone does not mean homeowners are safe; flooding is always a possibility. Even if you do not live in a high risk area, it is worth looking into flood insurance because more than 20% of all flood insurance claims are filed in low to medium moderate flood risk areas.** It is important to recognize that standard Homeowners and Renters insurance policies do not cover flood damage; only a flood insurance policy will cover floodrelated losses. Flood insurance is affordable and easy to purchase. Federal flood insurance policies can be purchased directly from an independent insurance agent and the annual premium for a residential NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program) starts at just $112 per year and increases according to the level of flood risk and amount of coverage needed.** A growing number of private insurers also offer excess flood policies, intended to provide water damage protection to homeowners over and above the coverage offered by national programs. It is also important to understand www.TheWomensJournal.com
that without flood insurance, relief from floods primarily comes in the form of loans. If your community is declared a disaster area, no interest or low interest loans are usually made available by the federal government as part of the recovery effort. However, these loans are just that – loans – and must be paid back. Obtaining a flood insurance policy is the only way to protect yourself fully from the costs associated with flooding.
•
Move to high ground, avoid rising waters and do not walk or drive through any floodwaters.
•
Stay away from downed power lines and electrical wires.
There are a number of things you can also do to help minimize or prevent water damage to your property. Follow these tips from Travelers Insurance to help prepare and recover from potentially costly flood damage:
After the Flood: •
Be watchful of snakes and insects that may have found their way into your home.
•
Throw away all food that has come in contact with floodwaters.
•
Remove standing water as quickly as possible, including from your basement. If your basement is flooded, pump out about 1/3 of the water per day to avoid structural damage.
•
Properly dry or remove soaked carpets, padding and upholstery within 24-48 hours after a flood to prevent mold growth. Discard anything that cannot be properly dried.
Before the Flood: •
•
•
•
Have your furnace, water heater and other permanent equipment elevated above the expected flood levels of your area.
• Wash and disinfect all areas that have been flooded. Who Do You Trust?
Presented By: Frederick J. Dawson, ChFC, CLU
M
y continuing chronicle of interviewing women has produced some extraordinary points of view, opinions, feelings, and ideas about the financial well being of women. Delaware Commission for Women Hall of Fame Inductee Beverly Stewart, President of Back to Basics says “more than ever before, women are not only the bread winners, but are the decision makers; consumers and buyers. They command more respect and are very capable people.” She goes on to say “they do need help with the planning piece and looking at the long term.” Lani Nelson-Zlupko, PhD of LNZ Consulting who is a therapist, coach and consultant says “A husband is NOT a plan! Women need exit cash and walking shoes to maintain their independence.” At age 65, women can expect to live, on average, an additional 20 years.* The U.S. Census Bureau indicates that women own almost 30% of nonfarm businesses. Moreover, according to recent statistics, 42% of older women are widowed, 11% are divorced, and approximately half of all women age 75 and older live alone.** Additional points mentioned by these ladies, were that many times women don’t have the time, inclination, or interest to take care of the important financial details. So what’s a gal
to do? I would submit to the ladies of the jury that consideration should be given to hiring a qualified wealth manager. He or she should focus on saving you taxes, preserving your wealth, helping you pass your wealth along to your heirs, protecting your assets from being taken away unjustly, and helping you make meaningful gifts to charities that you support. Only a small percentage of so called “financial planners” actually do all those things. Most only do one of those things well.
Finding that all important person “of trust” should begin by asking about his or her qualifications. A Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) or Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) is a good place to start. Each of those designations requires much study, passing tough exams and above all holds that person to a high degree of ethics. Even so, it does not guarantee you that you’ve got “the best” but it’s a great start. Do you feel comfortable with that person? Do they listen well? Do they answer your questions with respect and in a language that you can understand? Don’t be shy about asking how they are compensated as they should have no problem explaining those important details too.

What Drives The Cost Of Auto Insurance? insure. It’s generally going to be more expensive to repair a Mercedes than it would cost to repair a Ford, so you’re going to pay a higher premium.

• Driving record: Drivers with previous violations or accidents are considered to be a higher risk.
• Take a defensive driving course: If all drivers of a vehicle complete an approved course, you can receive a 10 percent reduction off a portion of your insurance for three years. If you take a refresher course before the end of the three-year period you can receive a 15 percent discount.
• Discounts: Auto insurers may offer premium discounts for numerous reasons, including for people who have taken an approved defensive driving course. Ask your agent what discounts are available to you.
By Karen Weldin Stewart
T
he Consumer Services division here at the Delaware Department of Insurance assists thousands of Delawareans every year with questions or complaints about their insurance coverage. One of the most common topics that people call about is auto insurance. If you’re looking to save on your insurance premium, you first have to understand how a company determines what it’s going to charge you for the coverage you’re seeking.
The following factors affect auto insurance rates; while most factors are within your ability to control, some are not: • Amount and types of coverage: If you choose to carry coverage above the mandatory minimum, your premiums will be higher. Comprehensive and collision coverage are not required by the state, so if you have these additional types of coverage your premium will be higher. • Age: Certain age groups tend to have more claims, especially very young and very old drivers. • Type of vehicle: Certain types of cars tends to have higher numbers of claims, like sports cars. Also, the more expensive a vehicle costs initially, the more expensive it usually is to www.TheWomensJournal.com
• Deductible amount: Choosing a higher deductible will reduce the premiums of your car insurance. However, your out-of-pocket expense will be higher if you have an accident. • Usage of vehicle: The more you drive, the higher the risk and so the higher the premium. • Where you live: Urban areas have more claims than rural areas, and some areas have more frequent accidents than others. • Marital status: Claims history shows that married persons tend to have fewer claims.
How can I save money on my auto insurance? • Maintain a good driving record: One of the most important things you can do to help secure affordable insurance is to be a good driver. A long history of claims or having a lot of moving traffic violations (speeding, inattentive driving, drunk driving, etc.) will definitely raise your premiums higher than that of a safer driver
• Raise your deductible: If you increase your deductible your premium will likely be reduced, but make sure you can afford the higher deductible if you have an accident. We encourage you to take a few minutes to review your auto insurance coverage or to call your insurance company or agent for help understanding your policy. Our Consumer Services division will gladly help you with any questions you may have – just call 1-800-282-8611 for assistance.
• Shop around: You should compare prices from at least three insurance companies. It’s impossible to know if you’re paying too much, or getting a great deal, if you don’t know what the competitors would change you for the same coverage. • Ask about discounts: Your insurance company may offer discounts if your car has certain safety features or antitheft devices. Other discounts 35

This time of year means outside birthday parties, weddings and other events. We have already seen the upswing in events being booked and look forward to being a part of your warm weather event whether you stop by the bakery to pick up some treats or phone in your special order. We pride ourselves on offering a unique and different spin on cakes and desserts to fit your need. Make sure to stop in and talk to one of us and see how we can help you serve up a shot of sweetness at your next event. The feedback has been good and we are happy to offer this item for those who really need a gluten free treat. Keep checking in with us; we will continue to bring in new Birch Tree products as they expand. You never know what you will find at The Drunk’n Baker. We’ve added more breakfast-like items especially on weekends. You can get our giant cinnamon buns and sticky buns as well as more traditional pastries. We’ve been testing some breakfast pizzas as well as trying different treats to see what our customers are liking. We
are working diligently to define our space so that we might increase into more traditional breakfast items though this will take some time. Our next project is to add some sugar-free choices. We know many of you have asked and we thought we would have them out by now but timing hasn’t worked out that way yet. Please know that flavor is very important to us so trying to get the best sugar free products made is always our goal.
to expand on those pairings and reach out to other establishments to bring a unique treat for everyone to enjoy. June will bring this year’s Smyrna at Night music event and we are happy to have live music at the bakery. You will also see us start to offer more scheduled music events at the bakery as well as theme nights with the desserts tailored to the theme. On our special event nights we will happily offer extended hours for our customers to enjoy the evening’s festivities.
Mother’s Day, Graduations and Father’s Day are just around the corner. Make sure you place your orders early as there is only so much we can bake in a day.
By Co-Owner Janet Forrest We can’t thank those customers enough that have stuck with us through the growing pains and have shared in the changing menu and happily gave us their input. We always strive to offer a good and fresh product. Baking truly is a science that we have quickly learned is affected by everything from who is baking and the building or space you are baking in.
