Taking Back Her Life!!
O
besity is a disease! A disease that kills! Frances Fooks knows this and she didn’t want it to strip her of her freedoms and time with her loved ones! Obesity is not only a “condition”, it is now recognized as a disease all on its own; and more and more Americans are succumbing to its devastation. As a person’s BMI (body mass index) increases, their risk for developing other health related problems increases dramatically. These include high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, sleep apnea, diabetes, certain types of cancers, asthma, infertility, venous insufficiency, arthritis and joint destruction. For example, evidence shows that

in men over the age of 30 with a BMI greater than 35, the risk of developing diabetes is 40 times higher! Therefore, decreasing your BMI can drastically decrease your risk of developing these medical diseases and increase your lifespan!
She immediately joined a fitness group doing cross training, and began changing her eating habits as recommended by the dietician during her preoperative period. Although she could barely walk the 1.5 mile warm up run in her cross fit classes, she was determined to make this a lifestyle change forever. Topping the scales at 318 pounds, she began her transformation, one step at a time. By the time she was ready for surgery, she had lost an incredible 45 pounds with her diet and exercise regimes. She knew from past experience however, this wasn’t enough, and without the surgery, she would likely regain the lost weight. She underwent a laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy on July 31, 2015 and to date has lost
That’s exactly what Ms. Fooks is doing now!! A mother of four grown children with many grandchildren to spoil, she took back her life! In January of 2015, she had enough of the tiredness, the pain, and the weight! She was pre diabetic and made a choice to get healthy. She attended an informational seminar on weight loss surgery and made a decision to make herself a priority, so she could be around for the future of her family. 1992. Dr. Barnett was Chief of Surgery at DAFB Hospital in 1995 and 1996. He has continued to practice surgery in Dover, Delaware ever since being honorably discharged and he founded his private practice, Surgical Associates, P.A., in 1999. Dr. Barnett is Board Certified in Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Society for Metabolic Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Medical Society of Delaware. Dr. Barnett has special interests in weight loss surgery. an additional 86 pounds. In just eighteen months since she made the commitment to well being, Ms. Fooks has lost one hundred and thirty-one pounds. She is no longer pre diabetic, and has more energy than even her grandkids!! She even has her own following on Facebook detailing her journey from the beginning. She knows she is still a work in progress and will be for the rest of her life, but is grateful to the medical professionals of Surgical Associates who have encouraged her and enabled her to TAKE BACK HER LIFE!! You’re So Vein! disease. And while this process is happening within the deeper veins of the superficial venous system of our lower extremities, an outward sign of long standing disease can be varicose veins!!
By Thomas P. Barnett, M.D., F.A.C.S.
T
hese summer days are hot and everyone’s wearing shorts! They help keep us cool, but they also allow us to see something we never wanted to see . . . varicose veins! While varicose veins can be asymptomatic, they can also be the outward signs of a more serious condition lying beneath the surface: venous reflux disease. Venous reflux disease is becoming more and more common, as providers and patients are educated on the symptoms and signs of this ever evolving disease process and its manifestations. Veins are an essential element to our well being. They carry deoxygenated blood and cell byproducts away from the cells of our body and allow this blood to be recirculated and cleaned by our kidneys, liver, heart, and lungs. They also serve as reservoirs for extra blood volumes. In medicine we use our various veins to administer IV lifesaving medications and for blood sampling. These veins work in a very precise manner, utilizing one-way valves to allow for efficient blood flow unidirectional. These valves are necessary to be sure the blood return is as efficient as possible, keeping blood from pooling in areas. When these valves become broken, blood is no longer able to move as efficiently as it should, causing pooling and overload in the affected areas. The areas most affected by this are those affected by gravity; i.e. our legs. The more pooling of blood plus the force of gravity overloads the system, hence damaging more valves. Once broken, these valves are too small to fix surgically. This is the etiology of venous reflux www.TheWomensJournal.com
health&medicine
How did I get venous reflux disease? A combination of genetic and environmental factors predispose us to venous reflux. Gravity is the worst enemy, however, since we can’t change that other factors include our genetic predisposition, pregnancies, previous stress or injuries to the legs, a history of a DVT, as well as previous surgeries to the legs, knees, and abdomen.
Symptoms of venous reflux disease can range from minimal symptoms of seeing an increased number of visible varicose veins on the skin surface, to heaviness, fatigue, aching, ulcers, swelling, and overall lower leg pain and neuropathies.
What can I do to find out if I have venous reflux disease? Call our office for a venous evaluation. One of our experienced practitioners can evaluate, diagnose, and treat venous reflux disease and its sequelae! Fall is the perfect time to get those legs ready for next summer’s shorter clothes!
How is venous reflux disease diagnosed? A simple ultrasound performed by a licensed vascular technician can usually diagnose the problem. How do I treat venous reflux disease? While venous reflux disease is treatable, it is considered a chronic disease process requiring routine followup, as the disease tends to worsen over time. Through therapies such as graded compression garments, wound care, radiofrequency ablation, and injection therapy most symptoms of venous reflux disease can be managed to a high degree of success.

As we head into fall then straight on to the holidays of winter so much has happened in the past year that it seems kind of surreal. The summer was a bit brutal, but as I am writing this brief note the weather is quite beautiful. I am not sure what is different this year as I have seen more butterflies, dragon flies, and hummingbirds in my garden than I have in the past. My heart wants to think that it is a sign from my granddaughter, telling me she is happy and content with God. Kourtney always loved butterflies, dragonflies, and hummingbirds, so it only seems right that she would send me signs with these creatures. I can only hope. This issue I did things a little differently. In regard to our cancer survivors, since space is so limited and we only have the 4 covers, I decided to do an inside spread for their stories; leaving the front cover section as a business profile spotlight. I hope that you will take the time to read their inspiring stories as they share their journey in surviving cancer. Check out the other profiles too! Complete profiles can be found on Pages 24-29. Coming up in November is one very important event! The Women’s Expo is being held at the Chase Center on Thursday, November 17th. This is a great event you do not want to miss! It is completely open to the public so go ahead mark your calendar and come join us. Thanks to all our wonderful contributors for your support of the County Women’s Journal. I hope that the holidays will be a wonderful time for everyone and that 2016 has been your best year yet. It’s The Most Of The Time Wonderful Time Of The Year!
By Michael Waite Director, Marketing & Community Relations
H
ave you checked your calendar lately? In case you didn’t realize it, another holiday season will soon be upon us, or is already here depending on when you’re reading this article. This is the time each year we set aside to celebrate traditions, family, friends and the blessings that we have. It is the most wonderful time of the year...for most. But as we make our way into this festive season, we are also reminded of the misfortunes around us. From those who won’t be celebrating because they’ve lost loved ones, to our neighbors struggling to make ends meet trying to keep a roof over their heads and food on their tables. And, there are those who are facing catastrophic illnesses who’ll be spending this season in the hospital. At Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD), we’re constantly reminded of those who are suffering because the blood and blood products we manufacture from donations are being used to treat those patients every day. From the trauma patient who needs an immediate transfusion
of red cells to replace the blood they’ve lost in an accident, to the cancer patient who needs the lifesaving properties of a platelet donation, or a burn victim being treated with plasma, the patients at the hospitals we serve count on the generosity of blood donors all year long who donate the lifesaving gift of blood. The holiday season brings out the best in all of us as we set aside our differences and think about others. If you want to get into the true spirit of giving that surrounds the holiday, there is no more personal gift you can give another human being than a gift that literally comes from you…a blood donation. The greatest satisfaction of all is knowing that your donation will go directly to help save a patient in a hospital in the Delmarva region. There truly is no greater gift you can give another human being… it’s why we call dedicated blood donors our Heroes. But why should YOU give? Many who are able to donate simply don’t, thinking somebody else will do it…they don’t need my blood. And that is where you’re greatly mistaken. 65% of the US population cannot donate blood due to a variety of reasons including travel, medications and medical conditions that affect eligibility. Of the 35% that are eligible, less than 10% of that population actually does. That means a very small percentage of our community is keeping the rest of the country’s blood supply intact. If it were not for this small group of dedicated donors, the nation’s blood supply,
already in a critical state, would be in far worse shape. Donating blood is a true community effort because well over 96% of the blood that’s collected here stays here for the patients who need it. I can safely say you’ll not find a donation outlet that has more of a direct impact on our own community. The biggest challenge facing blood collection centers in the USA is the ability to cultivate new, younger donors. The current donor base in our country is aging rapidly and with a shortage of new donors to take their place, the challenge of providing a safe and adequate blood supply becomes more challenging every day. So as we enter this season of giving, Blood Bank of Delmarva asks you to seriously consider giving the most personal gift of all and donate blood. Not only will you feel an immense sense of self satisfaction for having helped save a life, but you’ll also be assuring that our community will always have a robust supply of this lifesaving gift on hand should you or any of your loved ones ever need it. We never know what unexpected life-changing event may happen next, which is why BBD is committed to making sure our community and the hospitals we serve are always ready for whatever happens. To become one of our lifesavers, simply make an appointment to visit one of our five convenient donor centers across the Delmarva, or attend one of the hundreds of mobile draws we conduct each year in communities all around 6
the peninsula. You’ll find useful information about blood donation and the donation process on our website at DelmarvaBlood. org, download our mobile app or call us at 1 888 8-BLOOD-8 and talk to one of our highly qualified associates. From all of us at Blood Bank of Delmarva we wish you a happy, healthy and joyous holiday season! Michael Waite, former on-air radio personality at WJBR, is the current Director of Marketing & Community Relations for Blood Bank of Delmarva, a position he has held since February 2011. Michael is the organization’s primary media spokesperson and collaborates with executive management on strategic initiatives to
improve organizational performance. He also manages community relations and leads the Blood Bank’s fundraising efforts. He is a past President and current member of the Board of Directors of the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, a former board member for the American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula, a 2011 recipient of the Governor’s Award for Volunteerism and a University of Delaware HRIM Renaissance Award winner.

Our Beacon Of Hope
F
or over 30 years, Midge DiNatale, BA, GC-C has been an advocate for mental health and the bereaved. It is her own personal experience and survival that is what led her to the path of Grief Counseling at Delaware Hospice.
sad about helping someone with grief. Putting on workshops for individuals and working with nurses and case managers are always a great way to round out my day. I have learned so much from my clients and I hope that they have learned something from me.”
Midge started her path on Grief Counseling long before she knew it; when she suddenly became a single mother after the death of her husband. However it was not until after the loss of her 23 year old son to suicide that really started Midge on her counseling journey. Soon after the loss of her son and while living in Atlanta, Midge became involved in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and SPAN- GA. It is during this time that Midge had her revelation that she just understood grief, “I get grief.” She trained to become a Survivor’s of Suicide (SOS) group facilitator in Georgia. It was after doing this training that Midge decided to pursue Grief Counseling in order to help a larger group with their losses. From that time on, Midge wanted to be that person for others who they could lean on along their journey. “Working with the bereaved was what I was meant to do with my life,” comments Midge.
Midge and the rest of the Delaware Hospice Bereavement Team offer over 20 different bereavement workshops and meetings throughout the month in a variety of locations across the county. Attendees enjoy the companionship and support of their fellow members and Counselor. Delaware Hospice families are able to attend these events along with the community as space permits free of charge. As a trusted community partner in end of life education and support, Delaware Hospice strives to provide quality healthcare services to our community. To learn more about our 16-month Bereavement program, call 302-478-5707 or visit our website www.delawarehospice.org.
Being a “beacon of hope” at Delaware Hospice, Midge has been able to help over 1,000 clients along their journey. There is no prescribed method of helping someone through their sorrow but with her personal and professional experience around death, Midge has become a resource for Delaware. Midge has found her home with Delaware Hospice’s Bereavement Department. “I love what I do each day; there is nothing

Some patients, whether pre-teen, teen, or adult, may also benefit from a less noticeable option that is removable and effective. Invisalign(R) is a method of straightening teeth using clear, almost invisible aligners. Healthy Eyes For Life H
ealthy eyes and clear vision is important to maintain the quality of life we all wish to enjoy as we age. Fortunately, there are some easy lifestyle changes we can make to achieve this goal.
In addition to eating a healthy diet DON’T SMOKE! The noxious chemicals in smoke increase the risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts, not to mention wrinkles.
A balanced diet including certain key nutrients is important to maintaining good ocular health.
Exercise regularly to increase oxygen to your eyes and remove harmful toxins. It not only benefits your eyes but your heart as well and helps maintain a healthy body weight. Obesity is a contributing factor in elevated intraocular pressure that may cause glaucoma as well as systemic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.
Lutein and Zeaxanthine increase pigment that protects the macula, the part of the retina that allows 20/20 vision from blue wavelengths of light. This reduces the risk of macular degeneration. Lutein and Zeaxanthine are found in green leafy vegetables and eggs. The antioxidant Vitamin C slows the formation of cataracts. It is found in many fruits and vegetables. Vitamin E is another potent antioxidant that protects cells in the eyes from unstable molecules called free radicals that break down healthy tissue. Nuts, sweet potatoes and fortified cereals are all good sources of Vitamin E. Omega-3 fatty acids maintain the integrity of the nervous system, provides fuel to cells and aids the immune system. Visual development and retinal function rely on Omega-3 fatty acids. Finally, Zinc is a trace mineral that plays a vital role in moving Vitamin A from the liver to the retina in order to produce melanin, a protective pigment in the eye that helps lower the risk of macular degeneration.
www.TheWomensJournal.com
Protecting our eyes from sun and short-wavelength light is important as well. Sun not only causes progression of cataracts, it is a significant risk factor for macular degeneration. Skin cancer is another good reason to wear sun protection. The delicate skin around the eyes is a common site for basal and squamous cell skin cancer.

Michele R. Haranin, OD
We cannot underestimate the importance of regular eye examinations. It allows us to reduce eye strain by making sure eyeglass prescriptions are up to date and the best lens type and materials are used to address each individual’s needs. Early detection and treatment of eye diseases allow the best opportunity to prevent vision loss. Most eye diseases don’t have visual symptoms until they are advanced. Please don’t ignore symptoms until it is too late. Symptoms such as a sudden onset of new floaters and flashing lights, loss of vision in any form, eye pain or red eyes warrant a call to your eye doctor. The sooner a problem is addressed, the better the outcome. Together we can do everything possible to keep your vision at its clearest for a lifetime.
Digital devices commonly used today as well as LED and fluorescent lights emit shortwavelengths of light in the blue spectrum. These wavelengths cause slow damage to the retina that may result in macular degeneration later in life. Special glasses and coatings are available to protect against these wavelengths for people who spend a significant amount of time on computers, tablets and cell phones. In this day and age that applies to most of us.

SENIOR CARE NOTES:
Do You Know Where Your Loved One Is?
Presented by Ron Miller
W
andering poses one of the greatest safety risks for a senior with Alzheimer’s disease. There are over 5.5 million people in the United States with the disease and more than 60 percent of those affected will wander at some point through the progression of the disease. It’s a problem that will continue to grow. Unless a cure is found, an estimated 16 million people will suffer from Alzheimer’s by the year 2050. If the ratio continues nearly 10 million people may potentially experience wandering. This is a major problem that confronts the entire world. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, some of the signs that indicate that a person may wander are the following;
•
Asks about current or past friends and family
•
Acts as if doing a hobby or chore but nothing gets done
•
Appears lost in a new or changed environment
This seemingly pointless activity usually does have a reason. It is basically an attempt to communicate after language skills have been lost.
Returns home from a regular walk or drive later than usual
•
Install locks in doors, windows and gates
•
Attempts to fulfill former obligations such as going to work
•

Post stop signs in restricted areas and putting a photo of the individual in his or her bedroom, as well as bathroom sign may help them navigate their home
Watch for patterns if wandering occurs at the same time every day, it may help to plan a closely supervised activity at that time. As Alzheimer’s disease advances the patient may become frail and predisposed to falls. For that reason, living spaces will be safer if throw rugs, electrical cords, and other potential trip hazards are removed. If a person exhibits the early signs of wandering, a number of steps need to be taken to ensure safety.
Although impossible to prevent wandering, there are steps that can be taken to minimize its occurrence.

The Alzheimer’s Association has a program called Medic Alert and Safe Return. It is designed to help identify people who wander and return them to their caregivers. For a $40 registration fee you receive an ID bracelet, labels for clothing , ID cards, registration in a national data base with emergency contact information and a 24 hour toll free number to report someone who is lost. You may register someone by calling 1-888-572-8566.

All-on-4 Dental Implants® Delaware Periodontics offers an alternative solution by employing the latest technologies to provide patients with the most predictable and comfortable surgical care. The All-on-4 Implant Protocol allows Dr. Klassman to remove all infections and replace a failing set of teeth with a fixed set of new teeth in just one surgical session. He is the only surgical specialist in the area that will complete the surgery and the temporary teeth in the same day.
By Dr. Bradford Klassman
V
ery few people are aware of how much they use their teeth on a daily basis. It is not until an individual begins to lose teeth and their oral health and quality of life declines that they begin to understand the impact of impaired oral function on their daily life. Patients with missing and/ or failing teeth suffer from malnutrition, reduced self esteem, and self confidence. They possess a high risk for developing oral conditions such as boney atrophy. Patients also suffer from periodontal disease, cavities, root canal infections, and serious bite problems called “Bite Collapse”. In addition to serious dental conditions, patients with severely failing dentitions can also be more at risk for serious medical conditions such as: cardiovascular problems, stroke and diabetes, complications if pregnant, with a high risk of preterm and low birth weight babies. There are several solutions for individuals with failing dentition. The typical sequence of therapy to address these complex dental conditions could require at least three surgeries. First, the teeth are extracted and the bone is allowed to heal. Patients will temporarily function in a traditional upper or lower denture, which at times impacts the patient’s diet choices. Next, the implants are placed and require a healing time of three to four months. A third surgery is done to expose the implants. The start to finish time is six to eight months. During this time, patients use removable dentures to function. www.TheWomensJournal.com
The All-on-4 Protocol uses only four dental implants to replace an entire arch of teeth. By angling the back implants, we can avoid nerves and sinus grafting which often requires much more aggressive surgical treatment. Not only does this technique replace an entire arch of teeth, but it allows Dr. Klassman to correct bite problems that were not correctable with other treatment options. Patient’s lives are improved instantly by giving them immediate fixed teeth which improves eating, nutrition, psychological confidence, and removes all sources of infection. This occurs by connecting the new set of teeth to the implants, protecting the surgical site. Any post surgery discomfort is dramatically reduced. Patients can resume eating and activities right away.

Living with osteoarthritis pain?
LEARN ABOUT A LOW-DOSE TREATMENT OPTION “The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that NSAIDs be used at the lowest possible dose and the shortest time needed for your treatment.” —Dr. Paul Doghramji Dr. Paul Doghramji
A welcome innovation Using SoluMatrix Fine Particle TechnologyTM, Iroko Pharmaceuticals, LLC has developed NSAID products that can help manage pain at low doses. This technology: • Creates NSAID drug particles that are approximately 10 to 20 times smaller than their original size • Helps drugs dissolve quickly so they can be rapidly absorbed in the body
What is osteoarthritis (OA)? Characterized by joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting approximately 27 million US adults. If you are living with osteoarthritis, it is important to stay informed about advances in treatment, while focusing on information you can trust. Here are some facts I offer my patients to help them manage their osteoarthritis pain: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) NSAIDs are the most frequently used medicines to help manage pain and inflammation. NSAIDs are found in nearly 550 over-the-counter and prescription medicines, including aspirin, Aleve® (naproxen sodium), and Advil® (ibuprofen), to name a few. Other NSAIDs are only available as a prescription.
The role of meloxicam and VIVLODEX® Meloxicam is an NSAID that is used to manage pain caused by osteoarthritis. VIVLODEX is a low-dose SoluMatrix® meloxicam for patients with osteoarthritis pain. VIVLODEX is FDA-approved at 5-mg and 10-mg doses to be taken once daily.
The higher the dose, the higher the risk While NSAIDs can be effective, using them can also put you at risk for serious heart, stomach, and kidney problems. In fact, 16,500 people with rheumatic diseases (osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis) are estimated to die each year due to NSAID-related gastrointestinal complications. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that NSAIDs be used at the lowest possible dose and the shortest time needed for your treatment.
Ask your doctor if you are taking the lowest effective NSAID dose. Then ask about VIVLODEX. To prepare for a talk with your doctor about osteoarthritis pain and its treatment, you can download a helpful discussion guide at www.LowDoseMatters.com. All trademarks are the property of their respective owners.
Important Safety Information All non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like VIVLODEX, increase the risk of heart attack or stroke that can lead to death. This risk may happen early in treatment and may increase with increasing doses and longer use of NSAIDs. Avoid taking NSAIDs after a recent heart attack. Do not take VIVLODEX right before or after a heart surgery called a “coronary artery bypass graft (CABG).” NSAID medicines can cause ulcers, tears, and bleeding in the esophagus, stomach and intestines at any time during treatment. These events can happen without warning symptoms and may cause death. The risk of a person getting an ulcer or bleeding increases with: a past history of ulcers or bleeding in the stomach or intestines, increasing doses or longer use of NSAIDs, taking other medicines called “corticosteroids”, “anticoagulants”, “SSRIs”, or “SNRIs”, smoking, drinking alcohol, older age, and having poor health, liver disease or bleeding problems. “Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep” By Cindy Nigro Ph.D.
I
nsomnia is becoming an epidemic in our society. As with everything, there are pluses and minuses to the advancements we’ve made; for instance, electric light. It’s wonderful that we’re no longer dependent on the sun as our sole source of light. We can have light anytime, anywhere we want it! On the flip side of this, we now feel compelled to work more (because we can), in a 24 hour society. So, in addition the stress this adds, we’re also now subjected to more blue light during times that nature did not intend. Blue light suppresses the hormone, melatonin, which is necessary to induce sleep. And so it goes! Unfortunately, the world we presently live in does not lend itself well to our getting a good night’s sleep. But, it is the world we have, and for the most part, enjoy! So, given our situation, what are we to do? A sleeping pill may be effective at addressing your sleep problems in the short-term, however, often times, they can lead to a number of side effects such as daytime drowsiness and next day impairment. If you’re thinking sleeping pills, you may be headed in the wrong direction. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, or CBT-I, is a drug free treatment, and is now the first treatment of choice. The inability to sleep well, not related to physical issues, or serious psychological disorders, is what’s called Primary Insomnia. CBT-I addresses the cognitions and behaviors that might stand in the way of your getting to sleep, staying asleep, or both. It is a wellresearched, standardized treatment program with a specific protocol that must be followed. It’s not easy, but the payoff is that you could have vast improvement in as little as six to eight weeks!
What is required is that you begin by keeping a “Sleep Diary” to evaluate your sleep habits. It would include such things as the time you go to bed, time you to go to sleep, number of awakenings, etc.
to occur. If there is a problem at any junction, insomnia occurs. Everyone has their own individual genetic preprogramming, and their own experiences and psyche that also play a role.
After your particular issues have been identified, detailed instructions about “Sleep Hygiene” would be discussed, and you would need to follow through with necessary changes. For some individuals, this solves the problem, although that is not common.
If you are experiencing insomnia, Delaware Sleep Disorders Centers has a team of professionals that provide a variety of diagnostic and treatment tools to evaluate and correct a number of sleep disorders. CBT-I is one of the many solutions we offer. About the author: Cynthia Nigro, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist is now working at Delaware Sleep Disorder Centers after many years of being in private practice. She originally trained at the Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania, but after becoming fascinated
The next step involves what is called “Stimulus Control”. Going to bed and getting out of bed at certain times are examples of this. The more time you spend awake in bed, the more you associate your bed with wakefulness, and not sleep.
by the connection between the mind and the body, she began extensive training in all modalities of Biofeedback. Presently she combines these therapies to optimize treatment for those with sleep disorders. Delaware Sleep Disorder Centers, LLC, is staffed and equipped to evaluate and treat most sleep-related disorders. Diagnosis and treatment for many disorders may begin after just one night. When performing a sleep study, our technologists work closely with our medical director – (a physician who is board certified in Sleep Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine or Neurology) – to identify and confirm sleep disorders, measure their severity and recommend multiple treatment options.
If you’re still not sleeping, you then move to “Sleep Restriction”. This is the most difficult step and best done on a weekend or some other time you can tolerate a few days of being fatigued or experience daytime drowsiness. This involves limiting the amount of time you are allowed to sleep. The good news is that it doesn’t take many nights of this for it to work! During all these steps, negative cognitions associated with sleep and other stressors are discussed and reassessed. Obsessing about problems when you’re supposed to be sleeping will only make them worse. While healthy sleep is important, not everyone needs eight hours, and even if you do, a few bad nights are not a disaster. Finally, there are many different relaxation techniques that are useful not just for sleep, but for other stressful life situations. Everyone should be aware of one that works for them. Knowing how to calm yourself has been proven to be of benefit for overall good health. While sleep may seem passive, your body is very active during sleep, and legions of bodily processes are taking place that need to work in sync for sleep

Finally… Laser Cataract Surgery
Bladeless And Computer Guided – The Latest Advancement T
he latest step in the evolution of modern cataract surgery is available in Delaware. This new technology, Femtosecond laser cataract surgery, offers precision not previously possible and aims to meet the expectations of today’s active By cataract patients. Jeffrey B. Minkovitz, M.D. FDA Approved in 2010, the laser has been used in thousands of cataract procedures worldwide. But within the United States, availability of these lasers remains limited. Three years ago, along with my partners at the Center for Advanced Surgical Arts, we brought this technology to our surgery center, the first of its kind in the area, and at the time one of the first 75 in the country. Already one of the most technologically advanced procedures, cataract surgery has evolved in slow, incremental steps. Until recently, the procedure was performed manually, by removing the cloudy lens through a large incision, which was closed with crude sutures. Microscopes and ultrafine sutures dramatically improved recovery, from a week of bedrest to an outpatient procedure. Then, intraocular lenses allowed for functional visual rehabilitation. The current “state of the art” procedure, phacoemulsification by ultrasound, was invented approximately 40 years ago, allowing removal of the fragmented cataract through smaller incisions, further improving outcomes. Better ultrasound machines have improved safety and efficiency, while better intraocular lenses have allowed for better overall visual results and in many cases the elimination of dependency on eyeglasses. In yet another significant leap forward, cataract surgery has evolved to once again stand as one of the most technologically advanced surgeries of any kind. The Femtosecond laser, originally developed to create LASIK flaps for laser refractive surgery, can now be used to design and create
Dr. Minkovitz programming the LensX laser.

all of the necessary incisions for cataract removal and astigmatism correction, precisely measuring the ocular structures with micron precision and displaying these structures through real-time high resolution digital images. The laser can also create the critical opening of the lens (capsulorrhexis), and also fragment the lens before any instruments enter the eye. This allows for reduced ultrasound energy (which can be damaging) and improved safety. Reports suggest that the procedure is up to 10 times more precise than when performed with manual blades and ultrasound. The computer guided accuracy is ideally suited for the latest premium intraocular lenses capable of improving spectacle free vision. Delaware is home to some of the finest medical and surgical care available. With this early introduction of leading edge technology, we were thrilled to usher in the next era in modern eye care, and we remain proud to offer the absolute latest technology to Delaware patients, making this device available to other qualified and certified surgeons. Jeffrey Minkovitz, MD is an ophthalmologist with Eye Physicians and Surgeons in Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Minkovitz specializes in cataract and refractive surgery, and is one of only a few Delaware surgeons specially trained in corneal transplantation. He completed a cornea and refractive surgery fellowship at the renowned Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins. Previously, he graduated magna cum-laude from Harvard, earned his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts, completed internship at Harvard’s Mt. Auburn Hospital, and served his ophthalmology residency at Washington University. Dr. Minkovitz participated in the early research on Excimer Laser refractive surgery, and has offered this procedure to Delawareans since FDA approval in 1996, before Delaware had its own laser. These early pioneering individuals travelled to Wilmer Institute with Dr. Minkovitz, where he maintained his teaching and clinical appointment. In addition to introducing laser vision correction to Delaware, he also introduced NearVision CK to eliminate reading glasses, DSAEK (a newer, less invasive type of corneal transplant) and recently the newest advance in cataract surgery: laser assisted cataract surgery. In 2016, Dr. Minkovitz founded Laser Vision Delaware, llc and brought the newest and most advanced refractive laser to Delaware.

Sleep: A Medical Necessity
W
e spend a third of our lives sleeping, and the quality of our sleep determines aspects of our overall health. Sleep deprivation can be defined By Dr. Paul Imber, MD as a lack of quantity or quality of sleep. Sleep deprivation leads to personality changes, memory loss, increased accidents in the workplace and on the roadways, decreased productivity at work and school, hypertension, risk of cardiac disease and stroke, decreased success in rehabilitation after stroke, gastroesophageal reflux disease, right-sided heart failure – even sudden death! One of the most common causes of sleep deprivation is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This occurs when the musculature of the upper airway collapses while sleeping. During sleep our muscle tone relaxes and the airway narrows, which can cause snoring. This can be a hallmark of OSA. During deep sleep, REM sleep, the musculature relaxes even more causing a collapse of the opening and loss of inspiratory airflow. The brain perceives the lack of oxygen and awakens to a lighter stage of sleep, thus decreasing the quality of sleep. These events cycle through the night, and can occur as frequently as 100 times per hour in some patients. The oxygen level can drop dangerously low during these episodes, which can cause morning headaches upon awakening in these patients. Common symptoms for OSA patients can include loud snoring with gap episodes (stop breathing) of 10-15 seconds or more, awakening poorly rested sometimes with headache, daytime lethargy with napping if sedentary, difficulty driving distances, increased irritability, learning problems and hyperactivity in children, awakening through the night, and dry mouth when awakening due to mouth breathing. Many times the patient does not realize that he/she has the problem, and it only is noted when bed partners raise the issue of their own disrupted sleep by the snoring mate. OSA occurs in up to 6% of the population, usually between ages 50 to 60, although it can occur at all ages. In the pediatric population it is most commonly related to tonsil and adenoid enlargement. In adults, OSA can be caused by anatomic obstruction in the nose and throat which can include allergy, septal deviation, tonsil and adenoid enlargement, fullness and elongation of the soft palate and uvula, decreased muscle tone from female and male menopause, airway obstruction of the base of the tongue and around the voice box. If you think you or your partner may have sleep apnea, evaluation by a specialist is recommended. It is important that the patient with OSA be fully evaluated and examined for causes of the problem, as some of these causes can be corrected or modified through medical and/or surgical treatment. The diagnosis is confirmed with a sleep study, which frequently can be performed at home over a few nights. The home sleep test involves a few sensors to monitor airflow, chest and body
movement, and oxygen level of the blood. The test is painless and much more comfortable than in a lab study. If OSA is diagnosed, it will be rated as mild, moderate or severe depending on the frequency of apneic episodes and the drop in oxygen in the blood. It may show that the episodes only occur when the patient is on their back, which can be treated with positional modification. It may be recommended that a PAP study be performed, to see if positive airway pressure will correct the blockage (think of a gentle stream of air blowing through a balloon just enough to keep it opened but not inflated). On occasion an oral appliance may be recommended to adjust the position of the jaw during sleep, thus opening the back of the throat. Surgical procedures can also be performed to open the nasal passage, reshape the back of the throat, remove tonsils and decrease some of the tongue base. Also, control of allergy congestion and symptoms can enhance the effectiveness of these treatments. Sometimes, success is best achieved
with a combination of these options. There is even a new device to stimulate the nerve in the neck to contract the opening muscles of the throat which is attached to a pacemaker that paces the contractions to your inspiration while asleep. Obstructive sleep apnea does not have to interrupt the sleep of multiple people if treated aggressively. There are different treatments that can help you and your sleeping partner, giving you both an improved quality of life and health. If it is in both ears in the presence of, especially high frequency hearing loss, it suggests where on the hearing nerve degenerative changes have occurred—the pitch of the tinnitus matches to the location on the nerve where these changes have occurred. After taking a history and ordering and evaluating the appropriate testing, the otolaryngologist may recommend hearing aids to mask the tinnitus. Once the patient can hear at normal loudness, the tinnitus fades. The otolaryngologist also has other suggestions for moderating tinnitus.
hand or a smile and simply sit in silence. The person who greeted him may simply think he is being unfriendly and turn away. That older person lost the stimulation and reinforcement of touch, voice, and visual acceptance in no more than a moment.
How many times have you or your loved one caught yourself hollering to make yourself heard? Frustrating, isn’t it? Most times, it leads to either harsh words or eventually to just not talking to each other. This deprives both parties of meaningful conversation and interaction. Think of walking through the halls of a retirement home—with staff yelling at residents because “they can’t hear” them. Nobody wins. Remember when your aunt or uncle smiled and nodded at whatever was said to them because they couldn’t hear? The interplay of increasing social isolation, the neurologic implication of lack of auditory stimulation resulting in loss of ability to understand the spoken word, socalled word discrimination loss leading to the need to turn one’s TV to maximum volume setting and the anxiety and depression that can result from a wordless environment brings us full circle to the more pervasive problems of Alzheimer’s, dementia, and mental health issues. Simple management of hearing loss by increasing acuity with hearing amplification can

Most warnings tend to be presented in a high pitch or frequency, and that is the most common type of hearing loss. Not being able to hear such warnings puts us at risk. Better hearing leads to increased safety.
with the hearing aids she had purchased a while ago. Not only did Dr. Duncan handle her problems with compassion and expertise, but she gave us great hope she would be able to understand and comprehend again with more suitable aids. She had a trial period and with a new set of aids and my Mom, who had been told nothing more could be done to help her, is hearing much better, is happier and delighted with all the help provided by this facility. And we purchased 2 hearing aids for less than the one she had before. Also, my mom is 90 years old and has poor eyesight, poor dexterity, and not much patience. And you were able to take ALL of that into consideration and fit her in exactly what would work for her. We cannot say enough good things about Dr. Duncan for helping my Mom to hear better when we were told this was not possible. Thank you so much!” - Dr. Sandra Naumann, Forensic Psychologist, Phila., PA.

Let Us Give You Something To Smile About! Holistic dentists look at the whole body when treating patients. Similar to chiropractic philosophy, they understand that an injury to one part of the body can affect the whole system. Put another way, holistic dentistry addresses the patient’s immediate dental problems while also taking a longer-term approach to patient health. For instance, many treatments for oral conditions and diseases include toxic elements, including amalgam. Commonly used in fillings, amalgam contains more than 50% mercury, a heavy metal that can damage the central nervous and immune systems. That’s why Dr. Grace and her husband don’t use amalgam fillings. By Dr. Grace Liu
T
he Smile Place. Although The Smile Place at 17 N. Main Street, Smyrna may sound like a baby-sitting business or even a game arcade, the year-old dental practice is truly geared to children. Visitors are immediately greeted by wallpaper festooned with cartoon characters and a counter with stuffed animals eyeing you up or hanging from the ceiling. The waiting area features a warm leather couch and chairs around a TV that plays nothing but cartoons. Nor is the staff above wearing pointy cat ear headbands. It’s a place created to put children and parents at ease. If you come in between patients, you may even meet practice owner Dr. Grace Liu wearing a small ‘diamond’ tiara aligned with the office theme. Dr. Grace, as she prefers to be called, takes an active role communicating with children and families.
When at a patient’s request they remove fillings that contain mercury, they use drills with small vacuums to capture the fine dust and also wear masks to prevent inhaling it. Mercury can stay in the body for up to a year. Gum cleanings are also essential to good oral health and holistic dentists often use natural antibacterial agents to minimize this risk. Many holistic dentists like Dr. Grace and her husband also avoid using fluoride because they believe it does not prevent tooth decay
and poses long-term health problems to bones. Fluoride is banned in many European countries because of suspected cancer links. To educate the public about the risks of commonly used products and chemicals, the Holistic Dental Association was formed in 1978. New patients are accepted through a written and interview process that includes providing information about oral and general health that enables the doctors to review and recommend the best immediate and long-term care for them and their family members.

She is also a member of the Delaware State Dental Society, American Dental Association, and the Academy of General Dentistry.

Before school started in August a dozen staff members handed out 200 brightly colored “smile bags,” with school supplies to patients and neighborhood kids. “It was a wonderful way to reach out to our community,” said Dr. Grace who, with another dentist, treats as many as 60 children daily in a steadily growing practice. Many are from low-income families but all receive the same level of care and caring, according to practice manager Lynette Carey, a friend of Dr. Grace, whom she persuaded to come aboard when she opened the practice in September 2015. In addition to traditional treatment methodologies, Dr. Grace and her husband Dr. Lewis Yu, practice holistic dentistry, two of a handful of Delaware dentists who do. As the name implies, holistic dentists take into account a person’s entire state of physical and emotional health. They use natural therapies to diagnose and treat diseases of the oral cavity.

An Easy Fix For Hair Thinning
By Brian J. Shiple, D.O. & Kelly P. Shiple, PA-C
H
ave you experienced a progressive increase in hair loss over the years due to aging or illness? Are you undergoing significant stress in your life and noticing extreme hair shedding as a result? Do you think you’re too young to be experiencing baldness or patches of missing hair, which you can’t seem to find an answer for? Are you embarrassed by your thinning hair? You don’t have to suffer anymore! Hair loss affects men and women of all ages. According to the American Hair Loss Association two-thirds of men experience hair thinning by age thirty five. By age fifty, 85% of men will have experienced significant hair loss. Twenty five percent of men will begin to experience signs of hair loss prior to the age of twenty one. Forty percent of those suffering from hair loss are women. By the age of fifty, about 50 % of people experiencing hair loss, are women. Alopecia, or baldness, is most commonly a genetic condition. The likelihood of experiencing alopecia related hair loss is mostly a result of your mother’s genes. Baldness can also be caused by numerous other health conditions such as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), hyperandrogenism (too much male hormone in a female), anemia, stress, pregnancy, lack of protein, excess vitamin A, low vitamin B, autoimmune conditions, trichotillomania (a psychiatric condition in which sufferers pull out their hair on purpose, as a result of stress to relieve tension), excessive use or abuse of anabolic steroids, extreme weight loss, exposure to chemicals such as with chemotherapy, or over styling. Because of this extensive list of causes, we advise patients to have a consult for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) with us to determine if there may be

another, easily treatable cause of their hair loss prior to undergoing scalp injections with platelet rich plasma (PRP). On average, the scalp consists of 100,000 to 150,000 hair follicles. There are three stages of hair growth that play a large role in how our hair grows and sheds. The first stage is called the anagen stage. During this phase the root of the hair divides rapidly adding to the hair shaft. This is the hair’s active growing stage and can last from two to seven years. The next stage is called the catagen stage. This is the transition period during which hair is not growing but does not shed. The catagen stage lasts two to three weeks. Lastly, the telegen stage is a resting phase during which hair sheds to prepare for new hair. This lasts six to eight weeks. At any point in time about 10% of your hair is in this phase resulting in the loss of about 100 strands per day, on average.
platelets release billions of growth factors. PRP combined with the ECM’s growth factors, cytokines, and vitamins B and D new blood vessels are created, a process called neovascularization, increasing blood flow to the scalp. This increases the size of already present hair follicles. It also reduces inflammation present in the scalp, which aids in the process of turning on local stem cells to create new hair follicles. This results in the growth of more, higher quality, thicker hairs in the scalp. The clinical result of this combination treatment reduces the number of PRP treatments needed per year to help maintain healthy hair follicles by approximately 50%. After the injections are performed the scalp is treated with topical plasma and microneedling, to drive the PRP into the dermis and further aids in providing hair follicles with
Common treatments of hair loss include the supplement Biotin, the prescription Rogaine or minoxidil, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors like finasteride, and steroid injections to the scalp. However, these often don’t result in significant hair growth, if any. Hair transplant surgery has become a highly popular, successful solution for baldness, but is invasive and expensive. Now, there is a safe, effective, and cost efficient way to treat your hair loss: scalp PRP and extracellular membrane (ECM) injections. Joseph Greco, PhD, PA-C of Sarasota, FL pioneered the use of PRP as a nonsurgical treatment for hair loss and trained Brian J. Shiple, DO, and Kelly Shiple, PA-C. To make PRP your blood is drawn and processed in our lab to concentrate the platelets creating pure PRP. When injected under your scalp the
Once optimal results are achieved, maintenance treatments should be performed with a combination of PRP, ECM, and laser on a yearly basis to help maintain healthy hair growth and prevent shedding. Optimal results can be further enhanced by combining our BHRT program with the scalp PRP treatment. You no longer have to live with thinning hair and the fear of going bald. the necessary growth factors. The procedure takes approximately 1-2 hours. Nerve blocks and numbing cream are used to help make the treatment as comfortable as possible. We also advocate a laser helmet to help support and maintain healthy hair follicles. The first laser treatment can be performed in the office with a class 4 K-Laser after the treatment. Results take several months to appear. We recommend three treatments separated by six months for best results.

Choosing Wisely “Life is change . Growth is optional . Choose wisely.” ~Karen Kaiser Clark is blessed to be headed to the Caribbean to live and work for the next few years. It means the end of being the leader of a beautiful yoga community here in Delaware, but the beginning of an exciting adventure. y last year has been full of change. It seems like a tremendous amount of change, and without embracing that change, I’m pretty certain that rather than the exceptional amount of growth that I’ve had in the past year, I would be in tears at the moment. But instead, I am celebrating the excitement that life holds for my family and me.
We are so pleased to announce that Dimitra Yoga will be continuing the yoga and wellness community at our Rehoboth location. Our Kaya family of healers will be continuing in this space, including Bob and Heather returning to offer services seasonally.

A dear friend and spiritual teacher once told me that shamanically we are asked to find the lesson in each challenge, as well as to express and feel gratitude for what that event, person, experience has taught us. Change is inevitable and the faster we can find and appreciate our lesson, the smoother the transition and the sooner we can open up to all of the beauty that is there for us in that change.

This past April, my family lost everything in a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. It was hard to mourn the physical possessions when we saw our entire town destroyed, with many loosing so much more than possessions. The loss of life and of an entire community was so much worse than loosing my beloved surfboard, special treasures, my home and all that went with it. Though we did mourn our loss of community and all that was our reality up until that point, coming back to my yoga, to breath, to selfcare, to balance and to gratitude, has enabled me to be open to the beauty of the next chapter in my life. Five Quotes From Joseph Pilates That Will Powerfully Influence Your Life! “If your spine is inflexibility stiff at 30, you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.” - Joseph Pilates

oseph Pilates was the author of many great quotes. We’ve chosen five to help you to understand how the Pilates method, also referred to as Contrology, can help improve your life.
“The mind, when housed within a healthful body, possesses a glorious sense of power.” - Joseph Pilates Joseph Pilates was adamant that Pilates, or Contrology which he called it, was about the complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit. This is one of the secrets of Pilates exercise: we practice each movement with total attention. When we exercise in
“Contrology is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will unmistakably reflect in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work.” - Joseph Pilates More conventional or traditional workouts are weight bearing and tend to build short, bulky musclesthe type most prone to injury. Pilates elongates and strengthens, improving muscle elasticity and joint mobility. A body with balance, strength, and flexibility is less likely to be injured. It may seem like a paradox, but the more you exercise, the more energy you have and the more you feel like doing. Pilates gets the breath and circulation moving, stimulates the spine and muscles, and floods the body with good feelings. You will move with ease and grace. All of these things will make you look and feel very fit to do anything.
“A few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balance sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics or forced contortion.” - Joseph Pilates A lot of conventional workouts tend to work the same muscles. This leads weak muscles to get weaker and strong muscles to get stronger. The result is muscular imbalance and inflexibility - a primary cause of injury and chronic back pain. When you’re tight you shorten your muscles and limit your body’s range of motion. At best, that can hurt your exercise performance. At worse, it can cause injury. Pilates conditions the whole body and no muscle group is over trained or under trained. That’s why so many professional sports teams and elite athletes now use Pilates as a critical part of their training program.

“Every moment of our life can be the beginning of great things.” - Joseph Pilates By practicing Pilates regularly you can achieve a number of health benefits without taking a toll on your body. Joseph Pilates most well know quote is, “You will feel better in ten sessions, look better in twenty sessions, and have a completely new body in thirty sessions”. That is such a great and powerful gift we can give to ourselves.

Good posture is a reflection of good alignment supported by a strong core. The core muscles of the body are the deep muscles of the back, abdomen, and pelvic floor; these are the muscles we rely on to support a strong, supple back, good posture, and efficient movement patterns. When the core is strong, the frame of the body is supported. This means the neck and shoulders can relax, and the rest of the muscles and joints are freed to do their jobs and not more. A nice side benefit is that core training promotes the flat abs we all covet.

“Shasta Shutterbug” Has Arrived!
By Mike Baker
As the sign says in the camper... GRAB A PROP – STRIKE A POSE! “Shasta Shutterbug” camper photo booth was an idea I saw online from California and Florida. My niece had sent a couple of pictures to me, and I started to research. It’s also something popular in Europe. Most of those are from the back of a VW bus or a similar vehicle. I initially saw this 1969 Shasta Compact Camper for sale about a year ago alongside a local road. Not knowing what I could do with it, I somewhat shelved the thought of buying it. After I had seen these ideas online, I knew I needed that “Shasta.” I was sure it was gone eight months later. I took a 15-minute drive where I saw it previously. There it was still sitting there waiting for me. I immediately jumped on the idea. I purchased the camper and started looking at different ones all over the US. There are not many out there, but I think it will grow. I never realized how big photo booths are. I shoot many weddings throughout the year and starting noticing the appeal. I figured photo booths would be more of a short-term fad and dwindle away. Not true! They are getting more and more popular.
was attending UD while I worked on it and came home to check on it (and my work). I was blessed with a relatively warm fall and winter. I gutted it. You never know what’s underneath until you start pulling it apart. I replaced some rotten walls and rotten floors from 47 years of weathering. Put new ceiling and wall coverings with a hardwood floor. It is decked out with a stereo system inside and outside. The photo booth is built to fit in the area that is left. Courtney just put this up on my facebook page 3 weeks ago. I have made one appearance with it with many raves. It has already been booked for the American Heart Association HeartBall in Dover on April 23rd. We have gotten many bookings already for weddings, gala events and other outdoor events. We also have the standard photo booth, but I think this one has gotten much attention. After all, this is the first one in the First State!
So this was my winter project! Not having any idea what to do, I had my daughter, Courtney, do the designing as I did the engineering and labor. My 21-year-old daughter knew what was “in” more than I did. She www.TheWomensJournal.com

Grace Liu was born in Southern Taiwan and raised by parents who encouraged their children to always be involved in cultural and community affairs. Her parents would be proud of her outreach to children and families in her year-old practice in Smyrna. Dr. Grace, as she prefers to be called, arrived in the U.S. with her family when she was 14. She attended schools in Cherry Hill, New Jersey and Queens, New York. She became active in many choir groups, and at the age of 18, had the unique opportunity to sing at Carnegie Hall. After graduation from New York University School of Dentistry in 1996, she continued her education at Columbia University and the Academy of Dentistry. A proponent of lifelong learning, she continued her education at the Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Studies and also trained at Hallelujah Acres, a center that equips people to live a healthy life. Although she began her career in New York, she has practiced in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware, where she and her husband live and work. While she devotes much of her time treating youthful patients at The Smile Place in Smyrna, she also works with her husband Dr. Lewis Yu in their All About Smiles practice in Wilmington. Dr. Grace is a member of the IAOMT, (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology), Wilmington Women in Business, NAWBO Delaware and the Fresh Start Scholarship Foundation. In her spare time, she is an avid tennis player and member of her church choir. Ron Miller
Ron Miller, Executive Director and Owner of Angel Companions started his home care company when he realized the difficulties that seniors were living with. The realization came, as he watched his own parents age and struggle with doing tasks that used to be so easy. “My parents are gone now, but the lessons learned throughout my childhood, and the wisdom imparted to me as an adult have given me the necessary grounding needed to work in a compassion filled industry such as non medical home care.” His desire to bring respect and dignity to each senior his “Angels” touch, is a driving force behind what and how Angel Companions performs their services. “Our senior population deserve to be treated respectfully and to have their dignity protected as they age, and require more assistance”. The employees of Angel Companions are very carefully selected due to the stringent personality profile that must be met, but also their skills and experience that are weighed heavily during the vetting process. “It’s not easy to become an employee of Angel Companions” Ron Miller says. Angel Companions started their care services in New Castle County, and are expanding into Kent County with the same drive, level of compassion, and professionalism that has made them successful in New Castle County. “We are looking forward to helping seniors live at home in Kent County during the challenges of their aging process.”

Over the past 25 years, DBCC has developed and implemented programs tailored to the unique needs of different populations, including young women with breast cancer and the formation of Young Survivors in Action, AfricanAmerican women, Latinas, lesbians, men, and women with disabilities. DBCC has conducted many educational sessions and outreach programs for the general public, referred thousands of adults for free or low-cost cancer screenings, and has removed barriers to cancer screenings by providing interpretation, transportation and support services. DBCC is the only organization that offers Peer Mentor support for newly diagnosed patients and the breast cancer update has grown to draw a crowd of over 300 attendees. The organization holds the operating contract for the State of Delaware’s mobile mammography van that
To help generate income for the organization, DBCC operates two upscale resale shops in North Wilmington: Great Stuff Savvy Resale and Great Stuff Home. In addition to serving as a source of revenue, the shops provide another avenue for breast health education and outreach. My story begins July 2014 when I received that call while at work informing me that I had breast cancer. I was cool, calm and praying my strength in the Lord to help me through this life changing moment. I knew in my heart that I would be fine and God would be with me every step of the way. The most difficult thing for me to do at that time was to break the news to my husband and children. I was determined no matter what I was not going to allow cancer to take over my life. I was thankful and blessed that my breast cancer was in the early stages. In August 2014, I decided to have a double mastectomy with reconstruction, 8 rounds of chemo, Herceptin for one year and physical therapy. During the course of my treatment, I had many setbacks and challenges that I didn’t allow to keep me from working and participating in ministry related activities with my church. Six months after my last chemo treatment. I had my first follow-up appointment with a CT-scan that revealed a spot in my left lung. A biopsy completed, results were benign. My doctor was not completely comfortable with the results, and opted for surgery. December 2015 I had a Lobectomy to discover later the spot was the beginning stages of lung cancer not related to the breast cancer. Therefore, no further treatment was necessary. To God be the glory! For this life changing experience, it has shown me how precious life really is, I am grateful for every moment I wake up, I enjoy spending time with my husband, children, family and friends. My faith has kept me strong, supported by the love of my husband and children. Regardless of the challenges I faced. I am blessed to be a survivor and hope to share my story with others as a peer mentor with the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. You can increase the odds of survival, simply based on your faith and attitude. Therefore, stay encouraged, keep the faith, keep fighting and NEVER GIVE UP!
Angela Bursler
On New Year’s Day 2014, I awoke with a lump in my abdomen. Soon after I was diagnosed for the first time with stage III ovarian cancer. Treatment to bring the disease into remission consisted of a full hysterectomy and six months of chemotherapy. The happy announcement that the disease was in remission was delivered in August 2014. As a busy wife and mother, I took full advantage of the next twelve disease free months. Sadly in the thirteenth month, tests indicated that the disease had returned. I bravely faced the second diagnosis with the same smile and positive attitude that I have had my entire life. Understanding the sense of urgency to address the new tumors on my lung and spleen I made the decision to seek treatment at the University of Pennsylvania’s Abramson Center. Seven months into treatment my CA125 value dropped from 48 to 10 and my CT scans indicated significant shrinkage in the size of the lesions. Less than two months later I was hospitalized with neutropenia, the effects of which caused severe fevers and respiratory issues. The prescribed method to treat my illness did not immediately work however after some research special platelets were infused into my system, which expedited recovery. Several diagnostic tests taken during my twenty-two day stay in the hospital indicated that the cancer had spread. Suspecting the worst, I arrived for a routine evaluation at my doctor’s office to find that the most recent PET scan revealed that I was cancer free. My doctor outwardly claims that my recovery from a near death experience was clearly a miracle. My objective going forward is to be a role model for others who suffer from the same condition and to assist in any way possible to eradicate this terrible disease through supporting the Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation.

Three years ago I decided to stop having mammograms. Every year I was told I have dense breast and nothing has changed. Since there was no cancer in my family, my father lived to 92 and my mother to 101, I felt it was safe to stop. Fast forward to this year, when my Gyno, on May 3rd, handed me an order to get a mammogram. I was so certain I would hear the same thing that my husband, Bob and I planned to have breakfast after my appointment. Two hours later and with two mammograms and an ultra sound I was informed I had breast cancer and was given the name of a surgeon to see the next day. Wow, did my world change. Because of my volunteer job for the past five years at Great Stuff, I have met many volunteers that were cancer survivors. That gave me the confidence to feel that I would be fine and joining an exclusive club that no one wants to belong to. Regardless, I needed some guidance, so I called the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition and I spoke to Cathy Holloway. She was my lifeline. I was diagnosed with Stage 1, Invasive Ductal Carcinoma and given the choice of having the Savi radiation because my lymph nodes and edges from the mass and tumor were also clear. Because it requires another surgery to implant the Savi I was very hesitant. Cathy came to my rescue by asking if I would like a mentor from the coalition who has had the Savi treatment to talk to. Entered into my life was Pete Quayle. Three years ago at age 88 she chose the Savi. She has been wonderful and so patient with me with all my concerns and questions. I had the Savi radiation and was so pleased with my decision. I am so grateful for my husband, Bob, who was with me every day, my daughter, Colleen, came in for the surgery and my son, Rob, was there for my “Graduation Day”. Phone calls, cards, thoughts and prayers are so important during this time and my friends and family made sure I knew they were thinking and praying for me. When I look back on these past months and into my future I am so thankful to God for giving me the strength and courage to fight this battle. I could never have done it without my faith. Today life is good.
Kimberly Schlichting May 2013 I was diagnosed with stage 2B breast cancer. The cancer was large, measuring 9cm x 9cm. I was told it was a slow growing cancer and it could’ve started growing ten years prior. I was 47 years old and upset that it wasn’t detected sooner. Having a family history in which all the women before me had breast cancer should’ve been a red flag for more progressive screening, but that didn’t happen. Regular self exams didn’t help identify it either because my cancer didn’t come in the form of a lump. What should’ve been my telling sign was when my nipple started to move off center of my breast; however, I ignored it for a few months because I was busy with life…(family & work) and I simply didn’t know this was a sign. I think of what proper testing and early detection could have spared me. My treatments consisted of a hysterectomy (which threw me immediately into menopause), followed just three short weeks later with a bi-lateral mastectomy, 18 weeks of chemo and 6 weeks of radiation. June 2013 alone I spent 12½ hours in surgery. It was during my treatments that I was introduced to the DBCC. I was immediately paired with a mentor who listened to me and helped point me to a variety of resources along my journey. I’m forever grateful for her help during a most challenging time. A time when everything was happening so fast that it was difficult to think clearly. I recall Donne’s, “No man is an Island.” It’s in times like this that we all need someone. I recently celebrated my 3-year cancer-anniversary by becoming a peer mentor. I participate in DBCC fund raisers to support their educational mission and I’ve had the pleasure to attend their activities such as the Nurture with Nature outings including Kayaking in Fenwick. Through DBCC I’ve made strong friendships with others who have fought this battle and struggled through the many emotions that are part of this fight. I’m so glad to be a part of this group which feels more like a close knit family… one woven with the strongest of fibers,…. SURVIVORS!

Want Great Eye Brows? Let’s talk about Microblading! Why does microblading not last as long as other eyebrow tattooing techniques?
By Melisa A. Ferriola, CPCP, LE
M
icroblading is the hot new trend in permanent eyebrows. It has hit the internet by storm – Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram all have thousands of pictures of gorgeous hair stroke brows done by a technique called “Microblading.” What is this new technique? Well, microblading is an advanced technique of “stroking” the pigment into the skin instead of “pushing” the pigment in. There are no blades used in this procedure, but it IS tattooing and it IS permanent. The result is very fine lines that closely simulate brow hairs for a more natural finished look. Here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions…
Is it semi-permanent? There are some technicians that are promoting this technique as semi-permanent. Using this terminology seems less scary to a client, but it is very misleading. By definition and tattoo industry standards, color is tattooed/implanted into the dermis of the skin. Pigments do fade in the skin over time, but that does not make the process semi-permanent. Touch ups, Refresh or Color Boost appointments will be needed and modifications can be made over time, but you should consider this a permanent procedure.
This is simply because a much smaller amount of pigment is inserted (tattooed) into the skin as compared to a fully or solidly filled eyebrow tattoos. Refresh or Color Boost appointments usually are needed or desired approximately every 12 to 18 months (solidly fill brows may last 2 to 3 years before needing a refresh). Check with your artist for maintenance pricing.
procedures before actually performing them under supervision. Please beware of Spa Estheticians that are taking 2-Day classes and offering this service.
What if I don’t like it?
How are permanent cosmetic procedures done?
Is there less training needed to learn microblading as compared to learning permanent cosmetics? No. If someone is new to the industry and does not already have a minimum of 100 hours of training in permanent cosmetics, they need to have a similar amount of training in microblading, even if it is for just that one type of procedure. There are many areas of study when learning these techniques, which include facial morphology and bone structure, brow shaping and design, color analysis, color theory, proper handling of equipment, prevention of cross-contamination, as well as practice work and the opportunity to observe
No procedures should be done without your design approval. Your technician should also be setting realistic expectations. Permanent Cosmetics has
a different appearance in the skin than conventional makeup has on the skin. Although the procedure is considered permanent, these procedures do have flexibility in changing color and shape to some extent, depending on the expertise of your technician. There are lightening procedures available if really necessary. And fading will eventually occur. Talk to your technician about all your concerns at a consultation.
Permanent cosmetics procedures are performed using various methods, including the traditional tattoo or coil machines, the pen or rotary machine and the non-machine or hand method. I prefer the manual hand application method for a softer, more natural result.
What is involved with a procedure? The initial procedure will generally take approximately 2 hours. The process includes an initial consultation to select color and to complete a brief medical history. Before and after photos are taken to help both the client and technician maintain the client’s natural features. Topical anesthetics are applied and the pigment application is completed. Each procedure includes a follow up visit for adjusting the shape and color or density of the pigment. At Lasting Looks, this follow up procedure is included in the pricing. 30

ntroducing our new Sayers Design Station. You design your own jewelry with our expert guidance. See your jewelry designs come to life before your very eyes. Gone are the days of pen and ink sketches on paper with the hope you will like the finished product. We can now show you what your ring will look like in real time and make adjustments that you can watch happen. We have hundreds of diamond mountings in stock for immediate setting of the diamond you select or a family heirloom diamond you may already own. But, if you want your ring to be a one of a kind sensation that all of your friends will envy, start with a design you like and enhance it from there. In the past we would sketch your idea on paper then use our CAD-CAM design and manufacturing software to design a ring to your specifications. We would then call you in to review the wax model. If a change was needed we would change the model and do a rendering along with another wax model for final approval before we began the manufacturing process. That has all changed for the better. It is now possible to start with a style you like and then change the shank, change the head style or even add a halo. Want to see what it looks like with a round diamond and then a princess cut or a cushion cut? It can be done in seconds. You can add side diamonds or www.TheWomensJournal.com
maybe a surprise diamond on one or each side of the head. We can also show you what it would look like with alternating side stones of sapphire and diamond or ruby and diamond etc. You are only limited by your imagination. When you are pleased with what you see we can render the image to look like a finished ring on your finger with your skin tone and choose a nail color to compliment it. Do you have gemstones or gold of your own to use? Perhaps you want to remake a ring that belonged to your Mother, Father or a Grandparent. We can restore the item or use the parts to make a new up to date style of your choice. Pendants, bracelets, earrings, pins or rings are all options for you to consider. And best of all, our expert designers and craftsman manufacture everything from start to finish right in our store. Our equipment is state of the art and our employees have over 200 years combined experience in the jewelry and manufacturing business. You have a beautiful ring in your mind and our job is to guide you in choosing a design and gemstones that work well together and have the durability and beauty to last.

Bill and Janis Nickerson
Bill and Janis Nickerson opened Tailored Living Serving Rehoboth Beach in early 2014. Janis is a Georgetown native. This move completes a commitment Bill made 20 years ago to retire to Sussex County. The Tailored Living franchise allows Bill to pursue two of his passions: woodworking and entrepreneurship. It has been an exciting second year completing many pantries, garages, home offices, Murphy beds, and closets in and around DelMarVa. Let us design a solution for you!
Über Pantry – A Timesaver for the Holidays! As summer comes to an end and the slower pace of the fall and winter settles in; before the holiday entertaining season arrives, it is a great time to consider organizing a key room in your home where you can save time and money – your pantry. Whether you have a large walk-in pantry, a small reach-in closet, or a cabinet pantry following some simple design principles can save you time and avoid wasted food that is lost in the deep dark corners. Hopefully this brief discussion gets your creative juices flowing. The pantry is a place where the adage “a place for everything and everything in its place” applies most emphatically. Whether preparing dinner for your family after a long day of work or getting ready to entertain guests, an organized pantry can simplify your life and make preparation more fun. Here are some simple ideas that can apply no matter your situation. Keep frequently used items front and center. The staples that form the backbone of your meals and are used every day should be kept where they are easily found and retrieved. Put them on shelves that are instantly visible. Use see-through containers. Simple plastic containers for cereals, pastas, and other bulk items make it easier to find and their regular shape make it easier to store. Use baskets or slide-out shelves to store pre-packaged snacks and other grab-and-go items. Label everything and include cooking instructions. This is one of the more clever ideas I’ve found. If you are running late and need to call ahead to get the rice started, having the cooking instructions on the container make it easy for the less-able cook at home to get dinner preparation started. Lighting. Consider adding task lighting in the pantry. A little bit can go a long way to making your search for that spice you need less frustrating. Lazy Susans and sliding shelves. Don’t let the corners of your pantry go to waste or things hide deep in the back of a shelf where they may never be seen again. Corner shelves are a great use of space, but items that find their way to the corner are very difficult to find and get.

The “B” Word A
ccording to a poll taken by CNN, roughly “7 in 10 respondents in America” reported to be “very stressed” about money. In the same report, less than 5% of respondents reported to be not stressed about their finances. Sadly, financial stress is spreading rapidly through our country. This is a stress that does not affect your mindset alone; it affects far more. Unfortunately, this is not a situation that targets specific areas of our lives, it affects it in its entirety. Too many Americans can relate to the feelings that this stress brings. As a matter of fact, simply thinking about financial stress can evoke feelings of nervousness. The good news is, financial stress can be relieved and the empowerment of financial freedom can be invigorating.
2. Know your NET income-
Many consumers have fallen victim to an impulse purchase. The short term satisfaction can be enjoyable, but the long term effect can have consequences. Impulse purchases are no longer what they used to be. Today an impulse purchase might be buying an iPad from the comfort of your own home, and then turning around and buying a movie to watch on the TV, with Papa Johns on the way. It is no wonder why so many of us have an issue keeping track of our money. Convenience and technology have made it easy, and much too convenient to let go of our money and have no clue on where it has all gone. How can you know where your money has gone and reduce financial stress in one step? It’s actually pretty simple; it’s the “B” word of the financial world . . . known as BUDGETING.
You may prefer a spreadsheet on your computer, phone, or tablet. You may prefer using paper and a pencil. You may just prefer a list. Whatever you feel comfortable with, use it. When tracking your expenses list everything you put money towards, even if it is as inexpensive as a pack of gum.
Where to start, how to begin? The first step is the hardest; but once you’ve made the commitment to budget and use self discipline, you will begin to lower your stress levels drastically. Let’s go ahead and get started on a few easy steps that will introduce you to your new life of financial empowerment.
1. Set a list of financial goals-
Make a list of all short term and long term goals. Short term goals are usually under a year, and long term over. Remember when setting these goals it is important to stick to them, but they are not set in stone. www.TheWomensJournal.com
By The Financial Fitness Team at Dover Federal Credit Union
It is very easy to overestimate what you can afford so remember to plan on using your net income, not your gross. (In other words, don’t use your salary. Use your income AFTER taxes.)
3. Make your plan-
Start by having two categories, fixed and variable expenses. Fixed expenses are those such as your mortgage/rent, auto payment, utilities, etc. Variable expenses are those such as gas, oil changes, kids events, entertainment, etc. Plan, and account for all fixed spending at this time. (Fixed spending SHOULD include a minimum of 10% of your net income into savings.)
4. Track your variable spending-
5. Make it your own-
The best thing about a budget is the fact that you can personalize your budget and make it your own. After you set aside the money needed for the fixed expenses, you can determine where you have your wiggle room to spend money on what you want, rather than what you need. You are on your way to financial empowerment! Stay disciplined, and do not give up!
Helpful Tips to Remember •
Set realistic goals.
•
Set aside extra money for irregular expenses.
•
Remember that it is hard to get off a routine of spending, so do NOT let small failures get you down.
•
Remember that every month is different. Prom, tires, oil changes, etc., make monthly check ins a priority!
Be sure to choose a financial partner on your side, who is committed to your financial health and well-being and who makes you a TOP PRIORITY. 35

The Vitals On Title Insurance steps to eliminate them before issuing a title policy. Title insurance agents might also hold money in escrow and perform closing services for an additional fee.
M
ost first-time home buyers are familiar with various types of insurance (auto, life), but are unaware of what title insurance is and the role it plays in real estate transactions. In the rush to close such transactions as quickly as possible, title insurance is typically an area that consumers commonly overlook.
What is Title Insurance? Title insurance can help provide the home buyer and/or the mortgage lender necessary protection against losses resulting from unknown defects in the title to your property that occur prior to the closing of a real estate transaction. Unknown defects (such as outstanding liens or encumbrances) in a title can result in additional costs in the future or even invalidate a home buyer’s right of ownership in the property, and might also invalidate the lender’s security interest in the policy. Title insurance policies will cover the insured party for any covered losses and legal fees that might arise.
What Do Title Insurance Agents/Companies Do? Title insurance agents/ companies search public records to develop and document the chain of ownership of a property. If any liens or encumbrances are found, the title company might require the home buyer to take
How Does Title Insurance Work? Title insurance policies protect against losses arising from events that occur prior to the date of the policy, which is the date of closing. A title policy is usually paid for with a one-time premium that is handled at the closing of the real estate transaction.
Who Needs Title Insurance? Lenders — If a mortgage is obtained in order to purchase property, nearly all lenders require that the home buyer purchase the lender’s title insurance policy for an amount equal to the loan. A lender’s policy is issued to a mortgage lender. The policy provides the lender protection from covered losses.
to defer such decisions to lenders and/or real estate professionals who are parties to the home buying transaction. As a result, conflicts of interest can occur if the entities making such decisions have a financial interest in a title agency/ title company.
Key Points to Remember Although a title insurance company will most likely be provided for you during the mortgage transaction process, you are not obligated to use the suggested title company. Inquire about the services and fees included in the title insurance premium and any fees (e.g., cost of search and examination, closing services, etc.) that may be charged to you separately. A lender policy only covers a lender’s loss, it does not protect the home buyer from losses arising from defects in title. Consult with a local, reputable real estate attorney not involved in the real estate transaction to find out if it is in your best interest to purchase an owner’s title insurance policy. Inquire about any discounts available on title insurance policies. Premium discounts might be available if both owner’s and lender’s policies are purchased from the same title insurance company or if you are refinancing your loan.
Owners — Either the home seller or the home buyer may buy an owner’s policy. In many areas, sellers pay for owner title policies as part of their obligation in the transfer of title to the home buyer. The party paying for the owner’s policy can be negotiated during the purchasing process. An owner’s policy is issued to a home buyer, and provides the home buyer protection from covered losses.
Marketing and Sales Practices Although home buyers are free to shop around for a title agent or a title insurer, many home buyers do not. Because of unfamiliarity with title insurance, home buyers tend 36
Read all title insurance documents provided at closing, including the fine print. Ask questions if any items are unclear; or if any terms, conditions or amounts are not in line with those provided in previous discussions. If you believe that the title agent or title company in a real estate transaction is not following standard business practices (e.g., unexpected or undocumented fees), you can report the activity to the Delaware Department of Insurance.

I S IT TIME TO MOVE YOUR OFFICE OUT OF YOUR S PARE ROOM?
5 GOOD REASONS WHy IT Might BE TIM E !

Going from a home based office to a rental space is a big decision that causes angst among many business owners. The thought of increasing monthly operating expenses because of rent, utilities furniture, IT services and office equipment can be quite Lori L . Davis Executive Operations Manager LDAVIS STAT.INTERNATIONAL unsettling. However, here Stat International are 5 solid reasons why it is time to set up shop in a location other than your home. @
1
. Revenue Benefits- Prospective clients may regularly visit you prior to making a decision to purchase your product or services. There is a perception that a home based business is not as professional as a rented office. Moving to an office location can attract additional clients thus increasing your revenue. This revenue may, in fact, exceed the costs incurred as a result of renting an office which will allow your business to grow and thrive.
2
. Hiring Additional Staff- You may not be comfortable having an employee coming to work every day at your home. Besides the distractions of everyday life and the potential invasion of privacy both the employee and family members may feel at odds with the situation. Alternatively, it may also be challenging for to find the right employee when there seems to be a predisposition against home based businesses. Most employment agencies

and universities do not allow home based businesses to post employment positions on their job site.
is a great support for both startups and established businesses.
3. Space Constraints- When your business

grows, that spare room you are using may be cause for inefficiency and disorganization. With the additional need for staff and or equipment, things get cramped and actually moving will allow for private work space and office functionality. In the interim, consider allowing employees to work virtually if possible until you can justify moving and the monthly expenses that go with it.
4. Efficiency Improvement- Noise, daily
household chores, answering the door, family and pets can provide distractions that keep us from staying focused to the job at hand. An informal approach can be cause for procrastination and other bad habits experienced by entrepreneurs. Physically leaving your home to get to an office can help you be more effective and the office environment itself conveys a business mentality which fosters greater productivity.
5
. Interfacing with Others- Working from home can be a lonely experience. Even though you may be dealing with clients and vendors remotely, it doesn’t allow for collaboration which can stifle the imagination and creativity. If making the big move to a traditional office is too much to handle at one time there are other options available that can be a stepping stone to leaving your home. Co-working spaces and shared offices can provide not only the office environment you crave it can allow for the use of other office amenities; i.e. copiers, printers, coffee, and internet while allowing for collaboration which

I love the flexibility that STAT International offers me and my clients … whether it is a meeting space for 15 people with the most current technical functionality required for today’s business meetings or the ability to accommodate any of my client’s needs. Batman In April of 2013, 3E Marketing Solutions was a growing home-based business. One Friday afternoon a fellow business owner contacted us about a possible office share opportunity in downtown Wilmington. We arranged to see the office that afternoon. Once there, the STAT International team, customer service attitude, array of service options and location made an unexpected opportunity a “must have.” Although the space was too small for our businesses to share, 3E committed and moved into a small temporary office but in weeks moved into our suite on the 9th floor in early May. In December of 2015 we moved again, into our lovely, newly renovated suite of offices on the 10th floor! Moving to downtown Wilmington and becoming part of the STAT International community as been an incredible game changer for 3E Marketing Solutions. Richard Stat and his team offer so much more than just an ideal location and a wide array of services, they have a sincere dedication to the care of their clients. Ovarian Cancer...What All Women (and Those Who Love Them) Need to Know! Each year more than 21,000 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed in the United States, resulting in over 15,500 deaths. It is the deadliest of the gynecologic cancers, affecting approximately 1 in 70 women. Because there is no reliable diagnostic screening, it often goes undetected or is misdiagnosed until it has advanced to the later stages. Less than 20% of cases are discovered in the early stage. Due to late diagnoses and a very high recurrence rate (70-90%), less than 50% of women make it to the 5 year milestone.
Ovarian cancer does not discriminate and can affect females of any age and ethnic background. It continues to be one of the most underfunded cancers and the lack of public awareness and education is of critical concern. Although the symptoms of ovarian cancer often are not intense in the early stages, they are NOT silent. Once thought to be a ‘silent disease’, research indicates that 95% of women DO have vague but persistent symptoms. These symptoms are not always useful for diagnosis since they may be indicative of other less serious conditions. If any of the following single or combination of symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, consult your physician and insist that a manual exam and transvaginal ultrasound be performed. If any abnormalities are detected, a referral to a gynecologic oncologist may be in order. • Bloating • Pelvic or abdominal pain • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly • Urinary symptoms (frequency or urgency) Other symptoms may include: • Extreme fatigue • Indigestion, heartburn, or upset stomach • Shortness of breath • Lower back and/or leg pain • Change in bowel habits (constipation, diarrhea) • Unexplained weight gain or loss • Menstrual irregularities (including post menopausal bleeding) • Pain during intercourse
A PAP Test does NOT detect ovarian cancer!
Even if your ovaries have been removed, it is possible to develop Primary Peritoneal Cancer (PPC), a rare form of cancer, which is closely related to ovarian cancer. The peritoneum is a thin sheet of tissue that protects and supports the abdominal organs. When certain cells transform into cancerous cells, the result is PPC. The cause is not known. Symptoms are more gastrointestinal in nature and may include: · abdominal bloating · changes in bowel habits · an early feeling of fullness after eating Nausea and vomiting may occur when bloating is severe. Medical evaluation and treatment is the same as for ovarian cancer and recurrences are common. There is no screening for PPC.

About the Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation (DOCF) The mission of the Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation is to increase awareness and education about ovarian cancer among women and healthcare professionals in Delaware and the surrounding vicinity. The Foundation is committed to research and provides support for women affected by ovarian cancer. DOCF is pleased to announce the Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation Research Initiative, supporting ovarian cancer research at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and Research Institute. DOCF holds 2 major fundraisers per year...the TEAL RIBBON 5K TO FIGHT OVARIAN CANCER, the first Sunday in May and the TEAL RIBBON LUNCHEON AND SILENT AUCTION, held in September, which is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. In September, look for teal bows in various locations in Delaware as we participate in Turn the Towns Teal, a national campaign to promote ovarian cancer awareness. Check your local salon for DOCF awareness items which are in many salons throughout Delaware as part of our Salon Awareness Program. For more information on other projects and activities as well as sponsorship and volunteer opportunities visit deovariancancer.org and our Face Book page.
