Important Questions To Ask When Considering Cataract Surgery In Delaware A

cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye, part of the normal aging process. Typical symptoms include blurry vision, glare, and loss of color and contrast. Causes include aging, smoking, diabetes, UV By light, and certain Jeffrey B. Minkovitz, M.D. medications. The only definitive treatment is removal and replacement with an intraocular lens, though changing spectacles may help early cataracts. Once a patient becomes symptomatic, there are several important questions to ask when considering surgery,

IS SURGERY NECESSARY? The existence of a cataract does not always require surgery. Only the affected individual can decide when vision loss warrants surgery. With modern cataract surgery, not only is restoring vision possible, but oftentimes vision is improved to levels better than before the cataract. The surgeon can help determine whether vision loss is due to cataract, or to another condition (such as macular degeneration or glaucoma). Certain conditions require prompt treatment to avoid irreversible damage, and therefore a thorough, timely evaluation is important. Fortunately, cataracts usually require surgery only when vision loss interferes with activities: when patients can no longer perform necessary or enjoyable tasks. Occasionally, surgery may be “necessary” because vision loss makes certain activities dangerous, such as driving a car.

WHICH SURGEON? Important factors to consider are the surgeon’s training, experience and continuing education. Is she or he board certified and fellowship trained? Also, it is important to have available the latest advances in surgical techniques and options. The surgeon should be the one to examine and make the determination of which procedure is best, and then to have a thoughtful and thorough conversation with the patient explaining indications, options, and “informed consent.”

OPTONS FOR SURGERY: Once surgery has been elected, the next decision is the type of lens implant. Aspheric lenses

may give sharper vision, but they are not suitable for everyone. Advanced Technology intraocular lenses, which can further help reduce the need for glasses, include Toric lenses, which correct astigmatism, and multifocal and accommodating lenses, which may enable patients to see far away as well as near. Each has unique advantages and disadvantages. A surgeon experienced in each can help patients decide which is most appropriate. Finally, laser assisted cataract surgery is now available, and offers a greater level of precision and further options to correct astigmatism. Surgical technique is critical, and experience in refractive surgery (including laser vision correction) is beneficial. Only after careful consultation (including a thorough examination and a thoughtful discussion) with an experienced surgeon should surgery be elected.

WHERE TO HAVE SURGERY Cataract surgery is now most often performed in ambulatory surgery centers. Ideally, these are specialized, sterile facilities licensed by the state and accredited by recognized organizations such as The Joint Commission or the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Having anesthesiology available, whether or not sedation is needed, provides a safer environment. Anesthesia is typically topical (no needles), with IV sedation available to make the experience pleasant and comfortable Under the right circumstances, the results of modern cataract surgery are brilliant.

this procedure to Delawareans since FDA approval in 1996, before Delaware had its own laser. These early pioneering individuals travelled to Wilmer Institute with Dr. Minkovitz, where he maintained his teaching and clinical appointment. In addition to introducing laser vision correction to Delaware, he also introduced NearVision CK to eliminate reading glasses, DSAEK (a newer, less invasive type of corneal transplant) and most recently the newest advance: laser assisted cataract surgery. Dr. Minkovitz is a co-founder of the Center for Advanced Surgical Arts and serves on its medical advisory board. He is also on active staff at Christiana Care. While on staff of Wilmer at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Minkovitz received the Outstanding Teacher award. He was also named Top Doc in ophthalmology by Delaware Today Magazine six consecutive years, and has been an invited instructor at American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meetings.

Jeffrey Minkovitz, MD is an ophthalmologist with Eye Physicians and Surgeons in Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Minkovitz specializes in cataract and refractive surgery, and is one of only a few Delaware surgeons specially trained in corneal transplantation. He completed a cornea and refractive surgery fellowship at the renowned Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins. Previously, he graduated magna cum-laude from Harvard, earned his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts, completed internship at Harvard’s Mt. Auburn Hospital, and served his ophthalmology residency at Washington University. Dr. Minkovitz participated in the early research on Excimer Laser refractive surgery, and has offered

publisher’snote Dear Readers

We made it through another year, and I hope that your year was wonderful for you and your family. The year 2015 is a big year for me, because it is my fifteenth year as a publisher with the Women’s Journal. I never dreamed that when I started with the Women’s Journal that it would take me in the direction that it has. When I first met the owner’s of our National Licensing they told me that I was about to begin a life changing experience, and I can now say that I totally agree. They have been 15 of the best years of my life, and even though it has been very hard work at times it has also been very fulfilling, and has given me the ability to do things that I never dreamed I would be able to do. So to all my contributors that have been with me for a majority of that time I hope that the relationship has been a great one for you as well. I also want you to know that I could never have done it without each and every one of you, and that I am very grateful for the help along the way.

This issue we also want to bring recognition to the fact that February is Heart awareness month, and with that comes the reminder that women need to take heed of the article that Dr. Kevin Copeland has provided. Coming from a family with a large history of heart disease I am always aware of the importance of taking caution in how I treat my heart and myself. I lost my mother when I was just 20 years old, and have since lost 2 of my siblings to heart failure. So take care of your heart and learn the many factors that can cause a heart attack or stroke. This is also our issue to bring your mind to love and marriage, and all the wonderful vendors that we have within our publication that can help you have the wedding of your dreams. Thanks to all our wonderful contributors for your support of the County Women’s Journal, I hope that the holidays were a wonderful time for everyone and that 2015 is going to be the best year yet. The County Women’s Journal is available in medical buildings, hospitals, doctors’ offices, recreation centers, libraries, bookstores, coffee shops, hair salons, supermarkets, thousands of homes and many other local businesses. On The Cover... I would like to extend a special thank you to the Delaware Art Museum for graciously allowing us to have our photo shoot for this issue at their wonderful property. We could not have asked for a more beautiful location, and the staff at the Delaware Art Museum was wonderful to work with. If you are considering different properties for your wedding or reception I would highly recommend this one, especially for an outdoor wedding. The sculpture garden would be a wonderful location for photos. Unfortunately, the weather was quite wet for our photo shoot thus, the shoot had to be done completely inside. As always we were blessed with beautiful models, and for this issue not one, but three lovely Brides. Holly Ann Mays honored us as the model for our gown provided by Bridal Chic Boutique. Holly is represented by MMA/Model Management Agency. Our second model is the lovely Dr. Arianne Missimer, owner of Core Fitness Studio in Wilmington. Arianne is modeling a vintage look gown provided by Lady’s Image. Our third beautiful bride is Corey Grabowski, of the Jewelry Exchange of Delaware. Corey is modeling a gown that was custom made for her by Terry Richards. As you can see we have given you three totally different options to consider as a wedding dress choice, yet all are very beautiful in their very own unique way. And last but not least our charming young flower girl wearing a vintage looking ballerina length gown provided by Hansel and Gretel Children’s Boutique on Rt. 202 North. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all of the following for their hard work: Makeup artistry and hair was provided compliments of J. Christian Hair Salon and his staff- an award winning, upscale salon located at 7465 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. For more information or to book your wedding hair and makeup you can contact the salon at 302-3252306. I think you will agree they did a beautiful job. Roy McDowell of Royal Photography provided all photography work. Royal Photography is located at 3646 Silverside Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810. Roy is lots of fun to work with, and always manages to put our participants at ease. For more information call 302-478-1809. L

ocal radio personality, Sky Phillips, came to me last year to solve some of his dental issues. In case you are unaware, Sky is the cohost of the Sky and Christa Morning Show on Delaware’s #1 country radio station 94.7 WDSD.

Sky, in person, was every bit as friendly, kind, funny and personable as he is on the air. Unfortunately, his teeth were causing him extreme daily discomfort. He had considerable difficulty chewing his food and he hated the way his smile looked. He felt that he had lost his previous speaking voice due to his teeth not meshing properly. That is a major problem when you make your living talking on the radio. Sky’s family and coworkers informed me that he rarely smiled because of the problems with his teeth. I told Sky that I would try my best. I knew I could make him look better, but regaining his former speech and getting a great functional bite is very difficult. It takes patience, time, thoughtful planning and meaningful communication between my patient and myself. Fortunately, Sky was very open with me about his likes, dislikes and expectations. I was also honest with him about what I could accomplish and that some results may be compromised due to his particular situation. Because he had suffered for such a long time, we accommodated him within a few months.

so disappointing for me to look in the mirror every day and tell myself, “I just don’t like my smile.”

In the future, we are considering a few implants to increase the stability of his bite. But for now, Sky is comfortable and loving his new smile. His friends at work have told me that he now smiles all the time and is so happy. As with all dental treatment, there is a need for follow up such as professional cleanings, oral cancer examinations, checks for dental decay or other mouth irritations. He realizes that, just as he maintains his car and his home, his mouth and teeth require proper preservation to keep them in good health and working order. You can see a YouTube video endorsement from Sky on our Facebook page (and like us while you’re there) or on our website. Here’s what he wrote about us for our testimonial book:

Dr. Mazoch sat down with me and discussed what I needed to have done and in just a few months she gave me a beautiful ~ healthy smile and I can’t thank her enough! I have gone through years of multiple dental procedures and I got to a point where I wasn’t really happy with my smile. I just didn’t think that it did anything for me. And with being in an industry where your smile is everything and people judge so much of you by what you look like, it was 6

Laser Periodontal Therapy!

By Dr. Bradford Klassman

T

here is a Laser way to treat severe gum disease without cutting or stitches. Since 2010 Dr Bradford Klassman, owner and operator of Delaware Periodontics, has been using the LANAP Protocol to treat patients with severe Periodontitis. “As a Board Certified Periodontist, I am always striving to provide my patients with treatment options that will be safe, effective, and minimally invasive, in order to help them get back to their lives faster. I can now treat patients in my office with highly effective, well established and scientifically proven procedures. By reducing post-operative pain, number of sessions required, and the recovery time, LANAP eliminates many of the reasons that so many patients hesitate to seek treatment for periodontal disease and helps me ensure that my patients get the best possible dental care.” Gum Disease is one of the most common medical infections in the United States. 50% of the population has it but less than 3% get treatment In the initial stages of the disease, gums can be red, swollen and bleed easily. Some patients have no symptoms at all. As disease worsens, gums and bone that support the teeth become seriously damaged and the teeth become loose, fall out, or have to be removed. Recent evidence also shows a major link of untreated gum disease to many medical conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and pre-term and low birth weight babies. Previous treatments for Periodontal disease required multiple visits of specialized cleanings called scalings to control inflammation and then surgeries to peel back the gums to get access www.TheWomensJournal.com

to finish cleaning, reshape bone, place bone grafts and then suture the tissue back in place. Although historically effective, this type of treatment is lengthy and in some patients produces significant discomfort. LANAP is less painful and less invasive. This Patent and FDA approved procedure is performed under local anesthesia. A tiny laser fiber (about the thickness of 3 human hairs) is inserted between the tooth and the gum. The laser selectively removes the diseased tissue without cutting away healthy tissue. The tooth roots are then cleaned of all plaque and tartar. The laser is then used to create a stable and firmProof fibrin ❑ 1st blood clot to seal the opening. The Need For Blood Doesn’t Take A Break! slow down because people are focused on their busy schedules of shopping, get-togethers, family functions and good times. The need for blood, however, never takes a holiday break. Now that the holidays are over consider charitable giving all year-round— Blood Bank of Delmarva hopes that you consider giving one of the most personal and impactful gifts: the gift of life to people right here in our own community.

By Christine E. Serio External Communications Specialist Blood Bank of Delmarva

J

onathan of Elkton, MD has been a regular platelet donor for several years. It is something he has always believed is the right thing to do. In October 2011, the need for donors like himself truly hit home. Jonathan’s four-year-old son Gage was diagnosed with portal hypertension, a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by impaired blood flow to his liver. He ended up needing regular platelet transfusions prior to diagnostic and reparative procedures since his platelet counts were dangerously low and left him at risk for uncontrolled bleeding.

are saving lives and being a hero to someone right in our own community,” said Michael Waite, Director Marketing and Community Relations for BBD. “It is truly a special gift—the gift of life that makes all the difference.” Blood Bank of Delmarva services the Delmarva region with five permanent locations and more than 30 mobile sites—making it as

convenient as possible for people to give the gift of life. To become a lifesaving blood donor at Blood Bank of Delmarva, schedule an appointment at www. DelmarvaBlood.org or call 1 888 8-BLOOD-8. There is now an app too. It can be downloaded on iPhones and Androids to make it easier for mobile users to schedule appointments.

Platelets are needed for local patients battling various conditions including cancer or who are undergoing surgery. The automated process for giving platelets takes a couple of hours. The machine separates the blood into platelets and red blood cells, keeps the platelets and returns the red blood cells to the donor. Platelets only have a shelf life of five days, two of which are spent in testing, so the demand for the product is always high. Giving whole blood takes about an hour from start to finish including the review of materials, interview process, blood collection and time for cookies and juice in the canteen. One pint of blood can be used to help up to three people having surgery, battling serious illness or being treated for trauma.

“It was shocking that my own son would be a patient in need of platelets. You never think that your own child will need any type of transfusion,” says Jonathan. “It really made me think about the other children and adults who are able to live because of dedicated donors who give of themselves every day. You just never know when it is going to affect your life so deeply.”

In addition to whole blood, donors who meet the requirements can be twice as nice and save twice the lives by being a double red cell donor. The automated process takes a bit longer and donors give two pints of red cells instead of one. During the automated process, the double red cell donor receives their platelets and a saline solution so there is no loss of fluid volume. To be a double red cell donor, men must be at least 5’3” and 130 pounds and women at least 5’5” and 150 pounds.

During the holiday season, blood and platelet donations typically

3T MRI Is The Best For Imaging The Shoulder you lose the use of your shoulder. This is why imaging with 3T MRI earlier is ALWAYS better.

By Dr. Philip Chao

D

octors continue to learn after they graduate. Dr. Chao worked with Mike Zlatkin who developed MRI imaging of the shoulder. A good radiologist makes a huge difference. The added detail we see using 3T MRI matters for imaging of the labrum. We had a 60 year old patient with shoulder pain and a negative x-ray. The routine x-ray is a very poor test for imaging the shoulder. It is always done but it misses almost EVERYTHING that might cause shoulder pain. The doctor wanted to inject steroid without MRI imaging. This is a mistake. If you use steroids without knowing if the patient has a tear – you may make matters worse. An MRI of the shoulder in all patients older than 50 is necessary because of the high incidence of rotator cuff tears and disease. Tears smaller than 1 cm can be repaired with an arthroscopic acromioplasty (day surgery). If you wait till the tear is larger it will often require extensive surgery. If the tear is retracted most surgeons will not operate and

radiation. CT scans use a lot of radiation. This x-ray radiation causes cancer. We strongly recommend you ASK your MRI facility how strong their MRI scanner is. Radiologist experience and training matters as well. Dr. Chao is both a neuroradiologist, musculoskeletal and body MRI doctor (double fellowship). Find out before deciding where to take the prescription your doctor gave you to get an MRI. (Remember, the doctor writes the prescription, the patient decides where to fill it.). Contrast MRIs are particularly good for finding tumors, infection and inflammation. It does this without radiation and the contrast used in MR (which is neither iodine, nor shellfish-based) is much safer. And, even within the group of five or six MR contrasts, we use only the safest—Multihance, Prohance and Eovist. www.safecontrast.com

3T MRI scanners had more detail and are used for most sports teams. It costs the same as the slower inferior 1.5T MRI which most doctors think is adequate. At 1.5T the scanner cannot see a labral tear without an expensive and painful procedure called an MR arthrogram. At 3T we can see the tears without any contrast. So we save up to 1000 dollars with our extra detail. If there is any question we can use IV contrast and see the labral tear of your hip or shoulder joint or knee without an invasive procedure. This is called an indirect arthrogram. Our OPEN MRI scanner is the widest and most spacious, and least claustrophobic MRI in the world. We also offer IV sedation ($50) in case you can’t tolerate the study. BLADE software actually compensates for movement (of your shoulder or hip) and allows us to get clearer pictures. Most doctors don’t know this can make the difference in seeing a tear. Some patients who come to our OPEN MRI have been to 4 other scanners before finding out that ours is the only one that they can fit into.

MRI Consultants remains committed to providing the very best imaging and patient care possible. Also, given the complications of medical insurance, our office has an Out-of-Pocket price of $500 and $700 with contrast. I have been to several orthopaedic surgeons in the past few years, and they all take ex-rays or cat scans. THIS DOES NOT TELL YOU THE SOFT TISSUE STORY. I finally went to Dr. Chao since no one was able to help me. In one hour I found out from Dr. Chao and his 3T MRI that I had 6 major problems with my shoulder. None of which showed up on an x-ray or CAT scan. Thank God I am now on my way to recovery dealing with the specific problems, not speculation. his medical degree in 1983. After a transitional internship year at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY, Dr. Chao did his residency in Radiology at Brooklyn’s SUNY Health Science Center (1984-1987), where he became Chief Resident. He stayed on to complete a fellowship in Neuroradiology (1987-1988). Dr. Chao has been interested in MRI technology since its very beginning – the first MRI scan took place in 1981 while he was pursuing his medical studies. The University of Pennsylvania, where Dr. Chao was both a Body MRI Fellow (1988-1990) and a Neuroradiology Fellow (1989-1990), was at the heart of the development of this technology and Dr. Chao was able to work with pioneers in MRI on the first GE Signa 1.5T (tesla) scanner. His advanced research and specializations complete, Dr. Chao left the University of Pennsylvania for a position as Director of MRI in Wilmington, DE – a position he held for 14 years. Dr. Chao eventually left that position to create the best MRI Center in Delaware which uses the very latest technology: 3T MRI. While 3T (tesla) scanners have been used for scanning research patients since 2002, these advanced, more powerful MRI scanners only became available for clinical use in 2004. Dr. Chao worked hard to bring 3T technology to Delaware and in February 2007, MRI Consultants, LLC began operating the first 3T scanner in the State. 3T is the newest horizon for MRI.

Sharing The Precious Gift Of Mother’s Milk absolutely devastating. Breast milk is best right? Not for George. It took me weeks to wean from pumping because my supply was so strong, and I had no idea what I would do with the almost eight gallons stored in our freezer.

By Jessica Apel, D.O.

A

s an obstetrician, I encourage moms to breastfeed their babies because mother’s milk is the best nutrition, but I also know that some moms, even with good intentions, may not be able to nurse their babies. Medications, certain illnesses, challenges that come with twins, and other obstacles may limit breast-feeding success. Mothers who are adopting a baby or having a child via surrogate also need access to breast milk. As a mother who has been lucky enough to nurse two babies, I understand how meaningful it is for moms to provide the perfect food to help their babies grow healthy and strong.

It look me a while to come to the decision to part with my breast milk. Initially my pediatrician suggested storing it and retrying when George was older and potentially could tolerate the milk. I had put so much effort into pumping and storing more than a 1,000 ounces of milk. To pour it down the drain would have broken my heart. Approximately six weeks after George’s initiation into soy based formula use, he was a happy and thriving baby. My husband and I decided we would not give him the breast milk again. Now, what were we going to do with all of the breast milk in our freezer?

Guidelines for donating

Mothers who want to donate milk must be willing to commit to strict guidelines in order to ensure the milk is safe. Here’s a checklist: • The donor mom must be in good health. • She must have at least 100 ounces of milk to donate. • She must take a blood test to rule out diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis. (The milk bank pays for the test).

At this time, a patient of our practice had delivered her baby prematurely and for a variety of reason could not produce milk. One Saturday morning, she revealed they had signed up for the Milk Bank. A wave of relief flooded over me … why did I not consider donation before?

• Pass a drug-screening test. • Submit a form from your pediatrician reporting that your baby is in good health. Breast milk is absolutely the best food for babies. The American Academy of Pediatricians recommends breast milk exclusively, if possible, until six months of age. Mothers who find themselves in a similar situation to mine or are blessed with a bountiful supply can help other families in the best way, by donating.

I felt very fortunate that I was able to nurse my daughter, Ella Mae. And when my son George was born, the experience was going to be even better in my mind. I was a seasoned breast feeder and had learned from my “mistakes” the first time.

All went well for five months, and then George started developing problems. He was fussy, congested, had loose stools, some times screamed in pain, and had developed a rash that we couldn’t seem to figure out. After sifting through various causes over the course of several weeks, a trial of soybased formula resolved almost every issue within 4 days. Helping Delaware Hear Better HEARING AFFECTS EVERYTHING BETWEEN YOUR EARS.

HOW CAN TECHNOLOGY HELP YOUR BRAIN HEAR MORE NATURALLY?

If you’re like most people, you’re used to thinking of hearing as something that happens in your ears. What people often don’t think about is what happens between their ears – in the hearing part of the brain. That’s where sound becomes information that has meaning. Your brain works hard to make this happen. When the sound signals from your ears are compromised, your brain has to work even harder to fill in the gaps. This extra effort can take its toll. In fact, studies have shown that, over time, hearing loss can lead to isolation and depression.

With so much of your hearing happening in your brain, it’s important that your brain gets the support it needs when your hearing is compromised. Today’s hearing device technology preserves the important details in speech, so your brain doesn’t have to fill in the gaps. Many hearing instruments today work together as a system – which reduces the effort involved to participate in conversations. What this means for you is that you will hear more naturally. Anywhere. Anytime.

IT’S YOUR BRAIN THAT HEARS. NOT YOUR EARS. When you listen to a conversation, your ears and your brain work together as a system, with your brain doing most of the heavy lifting. Your brain is what uses the information from your two ears to orient you by figuring out which direction sound is coming from. It’s in the brain that sound waves become sounds you recognize. And your brain is what helps you focus in on a conversation and separate out unwanted noise. All four of these tasks happen simultaneously and continuously inside your brain.

We’re not just about hearing aids. We’re about hearing health care!

GIVE YOUR BRAIN EXACTLY WHAT IT NEEDS TO HEAR!

Today’s hearing instruments are finely tuned to match your unique hearing profile and personal sound preferences. They deliver sound with the clearest, purest signal possible in the way your brain is best able to understand it. The result for you is a more natural, effortless listening experience. Anywhere. Anytime.

The sleek ‘behind-the-ear’ style fits discreetly behind your ear.

The invisible ‘in-the-canal’ style fits inside your ear canal.

Why Choose Smartlipo TriplexTM For Liposuction?

A

common complaint after liposuction is about the extra, loose, saggy skin, generally on the stomach, thighs or arms. This is more likely to occur when there is poor quality skin (e.g., stretch marks) or too much skin to begin with. Loose skin can make you feel self-conscious about your appearance. However, unlike all other methods of Liposuction, Smartlipo TriplexTM is the only one that includes skin tightening. The tightening of the skin is done during the same procedure, after completing liquefaction of the fat by a specific laser beam. It heats the under-surface of the skin and causes it to shrink and to generate collagen.

SmartlipoTM Triplex is the only liposuction procedure that provides ALL of the following: • Non-surgical intervention • Is a comfortable procedure • Very minimal risk • Done under local anesthesia • One to two day recovery • Only minimally bruising • Permanent fat removal • Provides optimal body sculpting • Causes skin tightening

What the “Triplex” Stands For? There are three laser wavelengths unique to this system: • 1064nm laser minimizes bruising • 1320nm laser - causes skin tightening and thickening • 1440nm laser disrupts fat

Spider & Varicose Veins Back To Basics S

pider veins are red, purple fine lines that look like starburst clusters or web-like mazes, just beneath the skin. They measure between 0.5 - 1 millimeter in diameter. Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen, bulging, often twisted ropelike veins that occur on the surface of the legs and thighs. Both, varicose and spider veins are a manifestation of reverse blood flow due to the failure of delicate valves that direct the blood towards the heart. In tiny veins this will result in spider veins, in larger veins it causes varicose veins. Spider veins are usually just a cosmetic concern, while varicose veins are often a medical problem. Duplex ultrasound examination is an essential tool for a precise diagnosis and the successful treatment of venous disease. The treatment of spider veins is determined by their size and includes a combination of : 1. Sclerotherapy 2. Ohmic or surface radio frequency (“Vein Gogh”) therapy 3. LHE (Light, Heat, Energy) laser treatment Treatment of the underlying feeding veins will significantly decrease the chance of developing

new spider veins. Treatment of varicose veins involves the obliteration of the “leaky” source by heat emitted from a fine laser fiber inserted through a needle, called Endo-luminal Laser Vein Ablation (ELVA). The treatment of varicose veins is usually medically indicated and will be covered by medical insurance. Spider vein treatment however, is considered cosmetic and will not be covered by medical insurance.

new collagen sufficient to achieve the desired facial contouring. Your age and the amount of fat that you have lost in your face are some determining factors of the number of treatments and the amount of product that you will need.

The solution has been the injection of dermal fillers such as Juvederm®, Restylane® or Radiesse®. These fillers are usually based on a key ingredient, Hyaluronic Acid (HA), which is directly injected into the problem areas to help plump them up. Sculptra®, however, is not only a filler per se; it works by stimulating the body to generate it’s own lost collagen.

Which to use, Traditional Dermal Fillers or Sculptra®?

Dermal fillers yield immediate results. Sculptra® takes a few months after treatment before the skin looks and feels thicker’ the hollows begin to fill-out and the wrinkles begin to disappear. Most patients will need two or three treatments with Sculptra® to stimulate

Dermal fillers are preferable if only a small amount of filler is needed or if the effect is required immediately. Sculptra® will be more appropriate for the treatment of larger areas or for the rejuvenation of the whole face and if gradual results are preferred. Sculptra® is more costly than HAbased dermal fillers. Sculptra®’s effects however, will last significantly longer, at least two years or more. Touch-up treatments of just one syringe or so will be required periodically to compensate for your normal collagen loss in order to maintain the results.

otulinum Toxin (BTX) in the forms of Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® is known primarily for smoothing frown lines or crows feet wrinkles on the face. But over the years and after a long record of successfully addressing cosmetic concerns, it has become more common to treat non-cosmetic neuromuscularrelated conditions with Botulinum toxin, as well.

BTX has been approved by the FDA to treat several noncosmetic ailments, including: • • • • • •

Cervical Dystonia - a condition that causes painful uncontrolled neck muscle spasms Blepharospasm - abnormal eye twitching Hyperhidrosis - severe sweating in areas such as the underarms or hands Chronic Migraine Headaches Urine Incontinence due to an overactive bladder Strabismus – improperly aligned eyes, such as crossed eyes, eyes angled inward, upward, or downward

BTX has also been used extensively for ‘off-label’ treatments such as: • •

Bruxism - Jaw Clinching or Teeth Grinding Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Syndrome – inflammation of the joint in the mouth

Injection of Botulinum in these conditions can provide an effective, fast, inexpensive and safe relief of symptoms.

Tattoo Regret? Try Pain-Free Laser Tattoo Removal Making A Tattoo Is An Art; Removing It Is A Science.

attoo removal requires a laser to penetrate into the deeper layer of the skin while leaving the top skin layer without significant damage. The laser beam breaks the ink into particles, which are then eliminated by the patient’s own immune system. Laser tattoo removal can be simple, but it can also be complicated. An average tattoo removal requires between 8-12 sessions,

spaced six weeks apart, depending on the complexity of the task. Tattoo removal may be associated with significant discomfort, which often is the reason that people avoid removing them. ail fungus, or onychomycosis, causes the nail to discolor, thicken and crumble at the edges. It occurs more often in toenails than in fingernails. In most cases, nail fungus is merely a cosmetic embarrassing problem, but it can also become painful. Trimming or topical medicine are usually ineffective and oral medications carry a risk of liver and renal damage. Recently, laser treatment offers a new alternative. The laser beam passes through the nail and vaporize the fungus underneath without damaging the surrounded nail or skin. Two or three treatments are usually needed and are pain-free! When nail fungus is associated with pain, the discomfort will resolve immediately after the first laser treatment. The visual results of laser nail fungus treatment will not be immediately apparent. After treating the big toenail, for example, it may take 15 to 20 months to see the new healthy nail in place. Â Beside the obvious cosmetic reasons to take care of your nail fungus, it is medically indicated for people with diabetes and immune disorders. Deanna Stevenson, L.E. TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction) – The Great Impostor A Case Study of TMD Disguised as Various Medical Conditions

By Dr. Grace Liu and Dr. Lewis Yu

J

aw pain is the most common symptom people associate with TMD. However, it is not the only one. Due to the joint’s close proximity to the brain and pathological mechanism, it induces a wide range of symptoms throughout the entire body. When these symptoms surface at locations other than the jaw joints, they tend to mimic other medical conditions that may share some common pathways. Because of this sharing of common pathways, the true etiology is often masked. These symptoms may be reduced to a tolerable state, but they will always return without treating the true cause of the problem. To appreciate the uniqueness of TMD, we need to have a basic understand of the anatomy. Our human skull made of several bone plates stitched together by sutures. This flexible design allows our head to absorb blunt force without damaging the brain. TMJ sits under the Temporal bone. Within and around this particular bone, there are several major nerves and muscles passing through. These nerves control a wide range of functions such as facial expression, hearing, swallowing processes and other involuntary muscle movements. As we open and close our mouth, TMJ normally just glides over temporal bone with the help of several major muscles. In a pathological situation, these muscles are often in spasm. The direct consequence is bracing of TMJ against the temporal bone. Compression of temporal bone would in turn compress the nerves nearby. A group of symptoms is the direct consequence of such compression. Below is a partial list of symptoms: Headaches Ear Congestion Vertigo (Dizziness)

Tinnitus (Ringing in Ears) Dysphasia (Difficulty Swallowing) Facial Pain Paresthesia of fingertips Thermal Sensitivity (Hot & Cold) Trigeminal Neuralgia Bells Palsy Nervousness/Insomnia Cervical Pain Individually, each of these symptoms listed in the above table does not show a clear connection to TMD. Patients present these symptoms to their medical doctors. Based on their medical training, the doctors see and treat these symptoms differently. The result is partial improvement at best since the true cause of the problem has not yet been addressed. As time goes by, the side effects produced by chronic use of medication may further mask the true origin of the problem or create other health issues. Although non- life threatening, quality of life would suffer from this chronic condition. CASE REPORT Heather is a young lady who came to our office for consultation regarding her chronic headaches. She had many headache episodes each week. The pain mostly comes from the left side of her face and around the eyes. In addition to chronic headaches, she also has hypothyroid condition. Her medical doctor diagnosed her headache as vestibular migraine. Medication given has proven successful in reducing the numbers of episodes. Clinically, Heather has sore chewing muscles. Her TMJ clicks and is sometimes painful. She admits to clenching. There is no other significant issue with her dentition and supporting tissue. Based on the size her upper front teeth, we estimated her teeth are over closed by 5 mm. This is a significant number in dental terms. Analysis of her major chewing muscles by scanning muscle fiber firing frequency shows a significant spasm. Notice the first four lines of the graph below. The left side of each line has three letters designated and a number. That number represents what normal muscle should read. One the right side of each line, the number listed is the actual reading.

perspective to a problem could produce great results.

Before Treatment

3 months later

Impression: By definition, vestibular migraine is a kind of migraine that is preceded by vertigo (dizziness). Other symptoms may include: nausea, fainting, abnormal eye movement, hearing loss, weakness in arms and legs. The cause of the vestibular migraine is unclear. However, it is generally believed to be a neurological abnormality in the back of the brain. There are no drugs to treat vestibular migraine specifically. Patients are given drugs to treat vertigo and migraine separately. The most common age group is late teens /early 20’s. Heather certainly fits the profile of a vestibular migraine patient; however, the clinical picture changes once we add the TMJ clicking, over closing, clenching, and muscle spasm. The list of vestibular migraine symptoms is very similar to TMD symptoms. Over closing by 5mm could certainly compress the nerves to produce the symptoms. The question becomes which is the real etiology? Is it a neurological abnormality or TMD?

Treatment: We treated Heather based on the assumption of TMD. Using neuromuscular techniques, we constructed an oral appliance for her. The goal of this appliance is to decompress TMJ and relax the chewing muscles. Three months after she began to wear the orthotic, we took another look at her muscle spasms. Compare the first four lines to the pre-op graphs. We see a dramatic improvement even with in three months. Although there are other muscles with spasms that have not been resolved, this early result is still very remarkable. Subjectively, Heather is reporting fewer episodes of headaches and her sense of general well being is improving. This case is far from over. There are still issues that we may or may not be able to solve by TMD treatment alone. Ultimately, we suspect it would take the combined efforts of both the medical and dental teams to resolve Heather’s issues. This case does demonstrate how a fresh

Macular Pucker T

he following article is the first part of a three part series about macular diseases: Macular Pucker, Macular Hole and Macular Degeneration. These are 3 separate clinical diseases that all affect the macula but have different causes and different treatments. Patients commonly confuse the three diseases because they all affect the macula. This article will be about Macular Pucker.

Macular Pucker is a condition of the retina that can cause distortion and blurred central vision. Other names for this idiopathic disease include epiretinal membrane or pre-retinal membrane. The macula is the center part of the retina that allows one to read, drive, and recognize people’s faces. It controls the central vision. Even though the name of this disease is “macular pucker”, it not the same thing as “macular degeneration.” They are two completely separate diseases with different etiologies. Macular pucker is not as common as macular degeneration but it is not uncommon. It is more prevalent in patients as they age, but can also be found in younger patients. Many times the disease is idiopathic (don’t know why one gets it) but sometimes it can be related to trauma, eye inflammation, and sometimes diabetes. Patients may have a macular pucker and not even be aware, if it is mild. The disease is not always progressive so if there are no symptoms then no treatment is recommended. It is caused by very fine scar tissue (membrane) that lines the inner (top) layer of the macula. Usually the macular anatomy is nice and smooth with a gentle dip in the middle called the foveal dip. This is where the light focuses on the retina when a patient looks directly at something, giving them very fine precise vision. The anatomy is altered by the fine scar tissue growing on the retina, causing the area to wrinkle. Instead of a nice smooth surface with a gentle dip, the surface can be corrugated and elevated by the scar. As a result the patient’s fine vision is altered. They may complain of distortion, which means that straight lines look crooked or wavy. There also be a blur in the center of the vision. The peripheral (or side vision) is usually no affected. This anatomic change can occur in one or both eyes. If it is only in one eye, the best way to determine if a patient is symptomatic is to check vision one eye at a time. If both eyes are open, sometimes one is not aware of distortion, central blurring or decreased vision because the good eye takes over. Treatment for macular pucker involves outpatient surgery in the operating room. A patient would need a pars plana vitrectomy procedure that requires 3 small sutureless incisions in the sclera (the white part of the eye), which gently removes the vitreous jelly in the eye as well as the fine scar tissue that lines the inner layer of the retina. Sometimes the membrane is so fine we need to stain the tissue in

surgery with a special dye to see it as we operate. Preoperatively, a special test called OCT (Optical Coherent Tomography) can measure the extent of the membrane. The OCT is used to gauge the extent of the disease and to look at the detailed anatomy before and after surgery. Most times a patient sees better after the surgery. The visual acuity improves and the anatomy changes to a smoother surface allowing the patient to read much easier. If a patient is bothered with his or her vision, especially if they are having problems reading or driving then surgical intervention is recommended. If a patient is not bothered by the distortion and is functioning fine with the vision that they have, then the macular pucker should just be monitored. The patient can do this monitoring at home with an Amsler grid, which will help objectively map out their distortion. If there are any significant changes on the Amsler grid, the patient is counseled to call their doctor for an examination. Macular puckers do not tend to progress quickly so this is not an emergent situation if more distortion is noted. In summary, Macular Pucker can be successfully repaired surgically in symptomatic patients. This surgery is done on an outpatient basis and vision usually improves slowly over a 6 week to 6-month period. This disease is not related to macular degeneration and does not increase the risk of this disease. Dr. Glazer-Hockstein graduated Cum Laude from Jefferson Medical College. She was a member of the Hobart Armory Hare Honor Medical Society and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. She also received the Carol R. Mullen prize in ophthalmology. Yet, as the American public focuses on breast cancer, a silent killer is also taking the lives of nearly a half-million women in the United States each year. In fact, cardiovascular disease is, by far, the leading cause of death in the United States. Not just a disease of America’s aging population, a recent study from the American Journal of Cardiology cited that women ages 45 to 54 years of age have an almost equal risk of dying from cardiovascular disease as from breast cancer; currently, this risk alarmingly

increases as women grow older. Of course, it should be noted that cardiovascular disease not only refers to heart disease, but also encompasses the risk of stroke. Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States and is responsible for almost 140,000 deaths annually, 60% of which are women. In fact, strokes are the third leading cause of death in American women. Studies have shown that the risk of having a stroke also varies by ethnicity. AfricanAmerican females are statistically twice as likely to suffer a stroke as Caucasian women. Hispanic women’s risk of stroke is more than the risk to Caucasian women but less than the risk to African American women. In 2009, approximately 35% of people hospitalized for stroke

were younger than 65 years of age. Although these statistics sound alarming, it is estimated that 80% are preventable.

BeBalanced LAUNCES FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITIES FOR HORMONE WEIGHT LOSS CENTERS For the first time, franchise opportunities are now being offered to address one of the biggest issues that American women face; stubborn weight gain and PMS/Menopausal symptoms. This is a silent epidemic, affecting more than 45 million American women. Infinity Health Advisors has decided to expand beyond its home base in central PA, and offer franchises in the rapidly growing business of its BeBalanced Hormone Weight Loss Centers. Since its launch in 2008, the flagship center has attracted widespread attention, and market demand is rapidly growing. Expansion potential for this category is well documented with the weight loss market reporting $61 billion in revenue in 2013 and the hormone therapy market projected to reach $3.6 billion in revenue by 2017. This epidemic amongst women over 35 is not being addressed by the medical or fitness community, so there is high demand for a solution. The high demand, profitable business model, low cost of entry, aging population, and incredible referral volume make this franchise a lucrative opportunity. BeBalanced Hormone Weight Loss Centers is home to the Becoming Balanced Hormonal Metabolic Correction program, which addresses the root cause of common PMS/menopausal symptoms, such as stubborn weight gain, as well as mood and sleep issues. Rather than rely on drugs and synthetic hormones to mask symptoms, or calorie-counting diets that can be ineffective for these women, the Center offers a patent-pending, allnatural protocol that is non-medical. This protocol corrects the core cause of these and related problems, which is two specific hormone imbalances, and addressing the stress factor. The Becoming Balanced HMC program was initially introduced by Dawn Cutillo, natural hormone expert and author of “The Hormone Shift”.

It is also endorsed by board certified medical and homeopathic professionals. Dawn explains why this program has become so popular. “We see many women frustrated by not getting results from traditional calorie-counting weight loss programs. These women feel like no one understands their natural inability to lose weight. I have been there and understand, which is why I went to the root cause of the problem, to create a solution. In just a few short years, it has dramatically changed the lives of thousands of women struggling with stubborn weight and other PMS/menopausal issues, myself included.” Demand for “natural hormone balancing” is evidenced by the thousands of women who have benefitted from the protocol at the flagship center. “Women consistently lose 20 pounds a month on average, and enjoy improved sleep, mood, energy, and mental clarity,” says Dawn. “Once hormones are balanced and PMS/menopause symptoms are alleviated, women feel better, and are more motivated to stick with an ongoing healthy lifestyle. It’s that easy, and the dramatic results speak for themselves.” Franchises are now available in exclusive territories for a total estimated investment ranging between $87,000 and $141,000, which includes the $39,000 franchise fee. Franchisees receive the right to use the “BeBalanced” and “Becoming Balanced” trademarks and proven successful operating methods, enrollment in the training program, access to the proprietary products and protocol of the patent-pending Becoming Balanced program, support from center founder Dawn Cutillo and other staff, and ongoing training/sales/ marketing support.

suffer in Wireless Technology Enhances Don’t silence . Feel control Treatment For Bladder Control and confidence .

F

or many women, the uncontrollable urge to go to the bathroom controls their lives. If you are one of these women, don’t give up hope. The solution may be a device that uses the nerves to help regulate the bladder and bowl and avoid accidents. The technique is called sacral nerve stimulation, and thanks to recent improvements in technology, patients have greater access to this potentially life-changing treatment. Think of the nerves of the pelvis as the wiring that regulates bladder and bowel function. Sometimes the wiring is faulty. There are non-surgical ways to correct those problems, such as medication, dietary modification and muscle strengthening.

But when those strategies don’t work, surgery could be the best option. Sacral nerve stimulation involves positioning a wire next to the nerve that regulates the pelvic organs, which include the bladder, uterus, vagina, small bowel and rectum. The wire is then connected to an implanted stimulator which is very similar to a pacemaker. Sacral nerve stimulation is safe, effective and has been available for almost 20 years.

Minimal down time

The procedure to implant the device takes approximately 30 minutes and can be done as an outpatient, so women have minimal recovery time and can get back to their busy lives faster. Best of all, the vast majority of patients will experience a significant

improvement in the quality of their lives almost immediately.

Imagine being free from overactive bladder and accidental bowel leakage! No more avoiding leaving the house. Instead, women feel in control and confident. The procedure has gone through improvements in design throughout the years and now an exciting new modification which can greatly improve the patient experience is available. The most significant improvement is related to the trial period. You can actually try sacral nerve stimulation before the device is implanted. That way we can make sure it corrects your problem before implantation. For the last 20 years, during the trial period, the wire was placed and then connected to an extension

The new Verify™ system relies on wireless technology, so during the trial we use an extension piece that ends in a small box that contains Bluetooth technology. The box is secured to you with no need to plug in. The system then communicates via a wireless signal with a controller box that can be kept within nine feet, but does not need to be connected by wires. The new box allows for precise control of the test stimulation with no worries about wiring. All of this can improve each person’s experience with a tried-andtrue technology that has been implanted successfully

The DNA Diet .................................................... W

eight loss diets come and go. There was the Atkins, South beach, No-fat, and No-carb diet. However, most people By Dr. Melissa P. Broyles, D.O. regained weight after stopping these diets and their popularity ceased. Now, a diet based on an individual’s DNA is available. The good news is our DNA will not change, as do fad diets. The “genome” (the complete set of genetic information) of any individual is unique. In 1990 the Human Genome Project launched. It was an international research project whose goal was to identify and sequence all of the genes of the human genome. The project concluded in 2003 after 92% of the human genome was sequenced. This is a major scientific breakthrough. The hope is that genomic studies will lead to advances in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, including obesity.

In less than 40 years, the prevalence of obesity in the U.S. has increased by over 50%. Currently, two out of every three American adults are overweight or obese. Obesity and overweight account for nearly one in every ten American deaths, and costs our nation $223 billion dollars per year. Obesity is a complex problem, and now the epidemic has spread to our children. It is estimated that today’s children will be the first generation to live shorter life spans than their parents. In some cases of obesity, genetics seem to be responsible; in others, various combinations of hormonal, metabolic and behavioral factors may play a role. We are now able to identify a variety of genes that influence an individual’s eating behaviors, metabolism, response to diet and exercise, as well as identify an individual’s propensity to develop certain medical conditions. DNA testing is a great catalyst to help people make lifestyle changes, especially in respect to diet. A single saliva sample can identify how a person metabolizes fats, carbohydrates and protein. This information can be very helpful for a person trying to lose weight. For example, if an individual is a slow metabolizer of fats, then it’s recommended he/she be on a low fat diet to achieve weight loss. Clinical studies

show that individuals who follow a genetically appropriate diet lose weight more easily. Most insurance companies pay for a portion of the DNA testing. However, the physician must submit necessary paperwork which includes the patient’s vital signs and a valid reason (i.e. weight gain, fatigue) for ordering the test. It takes 2-3 weeks for the lab to process the DNA sample. The patient is then provided a personalized genetic report and an individualized diet plan according to their DNA.

So remember, one diet is not right for everyone. We are all uniquely designed. If you would like to find your genetically appropriate diet, please contact our office at 610-459-3773. www.drmelissapbroyles.com I have been a patient of Dr. Broyles for over a year now, and have found her to be a kind and concerned professional. I have been having trouble with my weight since I was a child. Over the years I have gained and lost more weight than I could count. I am 67 and heavier then I has ever been in my whole life. It didn’t seem to matter what I did to lose weight I still keep getting heavier. In February of 2013 Dr. Broyles ask me if I was really serious about losing weight; I told her if I don’t do something I was fearful of death. At that time she began to work with me on a weight management and proper eating program. I have lost 25 pounds since I’ve started eating properly. I feel much better and stronger. The swelling in my legs is all but gone. I was getting varicose veins around the ankles and starting up my legs. They are disappearing. Blood pressure is down. Sugar is down. Cholesterol is down. My clothes fit better and I feel better. I am happy… ~ Bob V. I was tired of being treated for each symptom and not as a whole person. I thought that the few issues I have could be interconnected, like my migraines and hormonal issues such as night sweats. I wanted to see an Integrative physician who would address all of my problems. I have been seeing Dr. Broyles for four months and can honestly say that I have not felt this well in a long time. I am now off of my blood pressure medication, I am on vitamin supplements, and we are addressing my hormonal imbalance. Dr. Broyles listens to all of my concerns and tries both conventional and alternative solutions. She is very patient and spends a lot of time both listening and explaining what could be wrong, and how to address the issues. Her office is warm and relaxing, and is conducive to healing. I am very happy that we have started this relationship. ~ Maria M. www.TheWomensJournal.com

Can Lymphedema Cause Cellulitis? Article by Joanna Mikhail, DPT, ATC, CLT Doctor of Physical Therapy Certified Lymphedema Therapist

W

e’ve all had accidental falls, bumps and impacts that resulted in swelling and tenderness. This is our body’s protective reaction at the site of an injury. However, when that swelling does not resolve in a few days, it’s time to suspect something more serious – cellulitis. Cellulitis is a bacterial infection in the deeper layers of the skin that can spread throughout the skin very rapidly. The skin begins to look red and swollen and possibly have a rash over the reddened area. When the skin is felt it is warm and tender. A fever is a later sign of an infection. When you suspect a cellulitis infection in your body, you need to go see your primary physician Image of cellulitis preferably that day. courtesy of LCOA If you cannot get an appointment that day then it may be best to go to the emergency room. After being diagnosed with cellulitis, you will need to be treated with antibiotics to help your body fight the infection. One common cause of cellulitis is lymphedema. This condition requires special treatment beyond antibiotics. The lymphatic system is part of our blood circulatory system to remove lymphatic fluid from the body. L ymphatic fluid consists of white blood cells, protein rich fluid, waste products, and any bacteria, virus, or fungus that may have entered our bodies. The lymphatic vessels collect the fluid and take it to the lymph nodes in our body. The purpose of the lymph nodes is to clean the blood and fight the infections that have ensued, providing essential immune system functions. When the blood leaves the lymph nodes, it returns back to the heart to recirculate. When part of this transport system fails, lymphatic fluid accumulates in the affected area. This condition is referred to as lymphedema. www.TheWomensJournal.com

Lymphatic fluid is rich in protein. When these proteins pool in any part of the body, they begin to layer in the skin. The skin can darken, harden, and eventually crack, allowing the fluid to seep out of the underlying tissues and allowing bacteria to enter our skin. Protein is an excellent medium for bacterial and fungal growth, so infections are frequently problematic for a patient with lymphedema. When bacteria enters the skin it is taken up by the lymphatic vessels and transported to the lymph nodes where infections are fought. If the lymphatic transport system has failed then the lymphatic fluid with the bacteria in it is not transported out of the skin and tissues to the lymph nodes. The bacteria then multiply in the skin and can cause a cellulitis infection. If you or your doctor suspects that the chronic swelling of your limbs is the result of lymphedema, you will need to be seen at a lymphedema clinic for treatment. However seeing a doctor first is important because the lymphedema therapist cannot begin treatment until the patient has been taking antibiotics for several days. Proper compression is key to removing fluid and bacteria from the affected area to a lymph node, where, with the correct antibiotics, it can be eliminated from the body. Antibiotics alone are not effective in patients with chronic cellulitis resulting from lymphedema. The infection tends to return time and time again because the swelling continues to stretch and open the skin and allow more bacteria to enter this medium (lymph) that is rich in protein and an excellent breading ground for infection. We encourage anyone who has chronic swelling and infections to schedule a consultation with one of our therapists and to begin a program that will help reduce the risk of another cellulitis infection. Our mission….. is to enrich the lives of our patients by treating and restoring hope for those living with lymphedema. We strive to improve the lives of people we touch by understanding their condition. Our goal is to collaborate with others in the community to improve the support and awareness of lymphedema. We are dedicated to providing excellent care in a calm, relaxing environment that meets or exceeds the expectations of those we serve. 21

BEFORE AFTER Professional courtesy photos provided by Lymphedema Clinics of America.

My experience at Lymphedema Clinics of America has been absolutely wonderful. From the moment I walked in the door, I was greeted with a beautiful smile and warm reception. My initial consultation gave me the hope I’ve been longing for. For several years I have lived in pain, taken medications that did nothing for my lymphedema, and was told there was nothing more that could be done for the chronic swelling in my legs and ankles. I couldn’t believe the results after my first treatment. I was excited, encouraged and hopeful. There are no words to express how grateful I am to the staff at Lymphedema Clinics of America. Star, Joanna and Laurie are the most, encouraging, compassionate, and knowledgeable team I have ever met. I am feeling better mentally, physically and looking forward to the continued success with my program. Having Lymphedema has been painful, stressful, and has impacted my life in a negative way. Lymphedema clinic of America has changed all of that for me! ~ Shonda L. Johnson - New Castle, DE

LCOA is currently offering educational meetings within the medical community as they campaign for better awareness for lymphedema. Any physician office, cancer society, hospital or individuals who would like to learn more about what LCOA has to offer, can call the clinic and schedule an appointment for LCOA to come and speak about lymphedema. Getting In Synch This Winter With A Spiritual Retreat a retreat is a very practical and attainable method to incorporate a spiritual practice with your holistic path.

By Nate Metz The Green Shaman

W

hen the calendar rolls over to 2015 this winter, I challenge you to make a radical shift in your being by abstaining from resolutions of change. Instead, I invite you to take a retreat to focus your time and energy on discovering who you really are NOW. I often see people falling short of their goals because they do not yet fully understand who they are with their present life circumstances. Our culture weaves a tangled web that can leave you preoccupied with balancing a long list of obligations, doing too much with too little, grappling with anxiety and depression, making unhealthy choices in relationships, diet, and so forth.

On my own journey of healing, I did not attain a sense of wholeness and balance until I reconciled my self with a spiritual practice. It allows me to make sense of negativity, isolation, disease, and shortcomings so that I may find meaning in life that is filled with prosperity and joy in a nurturing and sustainable way. Working with spirit allows me to understand life through symbols, energy, archetypes, intuition, and more. It also shows me that I am not alone and that I have help on this journey. I would be honored to help you plan a spiritual retreat this winter and experience the deep healing that you desire. At Kaya Wellness center, we have a selection of classes and services that can be tailored to meet your needs: Chakra Balance, STAR Energy Healing, Private Yoga Instruction, Reikiinfused Massage and more!

I highly recommend the STAR Energy Healing as part of a spiritual retreat. Performed within a medicine wheel, this healing targets the energy star deep in the very core of your being and will influence every aspect of your life. Using a specific ray energy and healing crystal, the vibration and pulse of your core star will be restored to a radiant energy pattern as you remember your true, divine nature.

Quite simply, the middle of winter is not the optimum time to try and change who you are by making resolutions. Living out of synch with Earth’s natural cycles creates imbalances in life. Consider what winter represents. This resting place is a time of dormancy. Nature calls to you to find stillness by practicing contemplation and going within. Bear teaches us how to hibernate. Instead of fighting the natural rhythm of winter with resolutions of fad diets, unrealistic exercise regimes, and breaking habits, I invite you to hibernate. Winter is the auspicious time to explore a spiritual life, to go within yourself, and discover your identity. Take time for you. Spend quality time free from your electronic devices, your grueling schedule, and other distractions. Taking www.TheWomensJournal.com

Make A Commitment: Plan To Reach Fitness, Health Goals In 2015! realistic, and maybe even conquer and divide. For example, if your goal is to run a 5K with your friends, but you have never run a mile, know what you will do and when. Start with mini milestones, and give yourself deadlines, such as: I will walk a 5K by March 15. I will be able to run a mile by March 30, and so on. Don’t forget to reward your successes, but not with unhealthy food. You need to set aside time to work on your goal. Get out your calendar (paper or electronic) and find time that is going to become sacred. By Nancy Hawkins Rigg Founder and Owner, Forever Fit Foundation

W

ho hasn’t said “I need to lose 20 pounds before...” or “I need to get in shape for...”? Usually by the time we speak these words out loud, we’re looking at an impossible dream, a wish that sets us up for frustration. We know that despite the claims of a product/ drink/ supplement that will help us drop significant body weight or regain a teen-age shape, that’s probably not going to happen. Here’s why: being in “good shape,” fit and having a normal, healthy ideal body weight takes continuing time, focus and commitment. Eyes on the prize, and for a lifetime. Many people need a personal trainer to help them stay the course. Depending on the person, some people have difficulty staying away from sweets, alcohol or processed food while others have never had a good experience working out. Going to a new gym can be intimidating and overwhelming for someone who has no confidence in her own body. Eating out with friends? We all know how easy it is to pick foods that sabotage our goal. So, where do you start? You can look at your challenge to get in shape, lose weight, train for a 5K just like any other part of your life. Identify your goals. Make them

www.TheWomensJournal.com

You can’t get in shape while you’re shopping or watching TV or driving. You need to schedule workout time that works for you and write it down, not just once, but at least three times a week. If something comes up, exercise is important. Reschedule yourself.

There’s a whole world out there to explore. Exploration is built on baby steps of achievement. You can do this, one step at a time. Nancy Hawkins Riggs is the founder and owner of Forever Fit Foundation, a personal training business specializing in Pilates, Gyrotonic, Gyrokinesis, Yamuna Body Rolling and sport specific training. Forever Fit Foundation accepts clients at three sites: Dover and Lewes, Del., and Mendenhall Station, Pa., just over the Delaware line. A certified athletic trainer, she earned her bachelors degree from the University of Delaware and her master’s degree in exercise science and sports medicine from Miami University in Ohio. Please call (302) 4231816 or (302) 698-5201 to schedule an appointment for more information.

Then know when you need professional expertise and assistance. If you feel as though you’ve tried and failed, it’s probably worth the financial investment to hire a personal trainer who has experience in helping guide others. Get it in your budget by swapping out entertainment or non-essential clothing purchases. An hour’s appointment a couple of times a week can help you stay the course, build physical strength, avoid injuries and grow your confidence. While working on specific exercises, you will also have time to discuss with your trainer concerns about nutrition, fitness apparel, a training schedule and other things you need to know to reach your goal. Here’s another key point: once you’ve achieved the goal of weight loss or increased fitness, you can’t quit. It’s time to raise the bar. Do more. That doesn’t mean you need to lose more weight or run farther or faster, unless you want to. You may have learned that running is not for you, for example. You may want to try swimming or cycling or tennis or Pilates. 25

Are You Winning Against Germs, Bacteria & Viruses? which makes it easy for the impurities to linger in our lives.

ow that winter is officially here it seems that germs, bacteria, and viruses strive to make themselves more present. The truth is these harassing elements are with us daily; we just succumb to their influence more easily during the cold winter months. During these times, because of minor lifestyle changes, our immune system gets suppressed

Whereas, during the summer, wonderful elements like natural sunlight, whole foods, and fresh air support our immune system and assist our bodies in overcoming these nuisance invaders. Fortunately, there are additional wonderful elements that are as, if not more, powerful and efficient, as those mentioned above. Have you heard about the therapeutic benefits of essentials oils? Today, I’d like to introduce you to doTERRA’s Essential Oils. doTERRA is known in the industry for being the sole producers of Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils. This makes the oils

Belak Flowers, located at 832 Philadelphia Pike, provided Wilmington, DE 19809 the flowers for our bridal shoot, you can contact them at 302-762-5000, or check out their web site at www.belak-flowers.com. Soft blush, pink, gray, and cream colors are combined to create this bouquet. Flowers used include cream peonies, pink lisianthus, gray brunia berries, blush roses, pink hydrangeas. The bouquet stems can be wrapped in dark gray ribbon, to coordinate with the grooms suit. Many bouquets can also do double duty as tabletop decorations. The peonies are normally available in spring only, but their season is growing along with their popularity. Silk flowers were used to create the cascade bouquet, light and dark pink flowers, pop against a cream dress. If the flowers are quality made, it can be very difficult to know if the flowers are fresh or artificial. With the amount of destination weddings, and brides wanting to take their bouquets with them, or if the weather is going to be hot and the wedding is an outside event, silk flowers are a really good choice. Many venues interiors are blush in color, so the pink palette, is always popular, and considered more soft and romantic. The flower girls basket is designed with pink spray roses, pink hypericum berries, pink lisianthus. Gray brunia berries, and seeded eucalyptus.

Will You Be Bridal Chic?

By Amy Stiefel

At Bridal Chic Boutique, all things are fresh! Fresh dresses, fresh prices, and fresh service – for women of

all shapes and sizes. Our dress collections include sizes 2 - 38, specializing in curvy woman sizes. Our mission is to provide every woman a dress with less stress. How do we do this? By providing the best quality product, in the most accurate size, (requiring less alterations), at the most affordable price! We believe all women should be able to try on a gown in the truest size possible. Many manufacturer’s size charts are not true sizes – leaving a Bride either frustrated by having to try on a size 22 when she really is a 16, or having to pay hundreds of dollars in alterations. The wedding process is stressful enough – physically and emotionally, for all parties. What bride looks forward to even more emotional duress when trying on dresses?

CHIC: (SHek) adj. Elegantly and Stylishly Fashionable

Dress size can be an issue, especially for curvy women. “We have partnered with an excellent manufacturer to bring curvy girls our exclusive private bridal collection, only available at the Bridal Chic Boutique, and for under $1,000.” Our curvy women collections also include party and prom dresses, as well as Mother of the Bride/Groom dresses. We strive to keep our current collection of Formal Wear priced affordably at $99 – $249, and carry a dazzling collection of fine jewelry for special occasion & everyday wear.

We offer tuxedo rentals, and have a Wedding Officiator on staff to perform your customized ceremony! Our fresh wedding emporium is located just 1.3 miles from Christiana Mall, in historic Old Christiana. We are “exclusively chic” to ensure you are our top priority. Appointments are highly encouraged & available seven days a week.

Wedding Day Themes

By Barbara P.G. Williams Co-owner of Belak Flowers

W

edding themes and styles seem to occur in cycles. What once may have been considered a “country” theme is now called rustic. What was once thought of as an “old fashioned” wedding is now called vintage. And no matter what style a bride chooses, there are multitudes of flowers of every description - color, shape and size - that can complete any look and carry out any theme. Since Pinterest became a “household word” it is a valuable resource for brides as a means to factor in the many components of the wedding planning process. In the floral category alone, a bride

may have already perused the endless possibilities on Pinterest and narrowed her choices down to the top three which most successfully fulfill her vision. When she ultimately sits down with her florist some of the basic decisions have been made and need only to be fine-tuned.

bouquets are pieces of jewelry such as a special locket or a favorite rosary that can be interlaced among the flower stems. Each of these choices helps to fulfill the well known wedding day saying - Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.

Flower choices that have made a huge comeback in recent years are football mums, carnations and babies breath. All of these make good financial sense in that they are available all year around. As for carnations, they come in an extensive array of colors, hold up in all temperatures and are affordably priced. Football mums are a great choice for their size as they can take up as much space in a bouquet or arrangement as four roses. Babies breath is a yearround crop, imported from South America, that is hardy and versatile and again, popular!

When a bride is confronted with the enormous selection of containers and vessels for centerpieces, serving table arrangements and accessory pieces, a decision may seem daunting. Again, Pinterest categorizes the many possibilities making it easier for a bride to visualize the finished product before her wedding day. There is no longer such a thing as a standard choice. Vases, vessels and containers that fit a rustic or vintage themed wedding reception are often wooden or galvanized. One of the most popular “comeback” items is the Mason Jar which can be found in a variety of colors, as well as clear, to compliment any floral composition. Milk glass, carnival glass and crockery items found in thrift shops and at yard sales by today’s savvy, thrifty brides ensure that the atmosphere at the reception is oneof-a-kind.

On every girl’s wedding day there is really just a brief moment when all eyes are on the bride; that is when she is walking down the aisle and for that moment her bouquet is one of the accessories that are in the spotlight. What she carries needs to have some amount of visual impact, yet not detract from the bride herself, and it is likely that it will include some quality of sentimentality. Brides often accomplish this by having the flower stems wrapped in a piece of fabric that was once part of her mother’s or her grandmother’s wedding attire and might be a sleeve or a section of the hem or part of the veil. A lace or linen handkerchief is another sentimental item from a grandfather or god-parent that can be used to wrap the flower stems. In an oldfashioned [pardon, I mean, vintage] wedding a degree of nostalgia is always part of the theme. Other items that brides have chosen to include with their

www.TheWomensJournal.com

Even though a wedding day is one of Life’s most special occasions it is often necessary to make economic choices. It can be costly to adorn a large wedding party and a banquet hall of any size with flowers. So even when a bride looks to the past for a wedding style she is completely up-todate when she takes advantage of suggestions on Pinterest. Planning to let some floral arrangements do double duty can be a moneysaver. The ceremony flowers that traditionally are only used for 30 - 60 minutes can be transported to the reception site and used to flank the bandstand or be set onto a couple of the serving tables, the bar or the gift table. When a bride has chosen to adorn the pew aisles with pomander balls, these can easily be brought to the reception and placed on glass cubes to become centerpieces. Wedding planning is a joint venture that includes the best and the latest ideas of several people. The

florist helps to make the bride’s vision a reality, and as the past meets the present, Pinterest is now a welcome assistant.

Prevent the Diamond Blues - If It’s Too Good to Be True . . . by Edward Stein

If the deal seems to be “too good to be true”, well chances are your instinct is correct. I’ve been conned before, and it really stinks. Aside the fact that you feel a bit helpless and dealing with loss of money and the time Edward Stein continues in the s pe nt d e a lin g with a family business founded by his horrible situation you grandfather, Maurice Stein in 1930. Stuart Kingston Jewelers start to lose faith in the is located on Pennsylvania Avenue,Wilmington, DE. world around you. It’s the same thing when buying a diamond and finding out what you bought was not what it was represented to be. It’s wrong and its corrupt and it infuriates me. We buy diamonds frequently and many times people come in with certificates of authenticity or appraisals of the diamond and the paper says one thing, but the diamond grade is something completely different. When buying a diamond from a jeweler the one question that people always ask is, “Why does it cost one price here and another price somewhere else?” I mean if we are comparing apples to apples why not the same price? The problem is that one place has an apple and another place has a rotten tomato with a certificate that says it’s an apple. Recently there was an article written about a jewelry store that was selling diamonds with EGL International certificates. It said that the diamond was G Color and VS2 Clarity. The customer paid a price for a G color VS2 clarity that was cheaper than the other retail store selling the same stone. When this customer

took the diamond to have the ring appraised by the G.I.A they found out the diamond was in fact a J color SI2 clarity. That discovery would amount to a HUGE difference in price and quality. Diamonds are priced based on the 4 C’s (see our grading chart SKjewelers.com). The problem is that some retail stores are getting bad certificates so they can say to you, “Hey look it has a certificate” to lure you in to believe, it must be what the certificate says!” So now the question is, how do you protect yourself from making a bad investment and actually know what you are buying is a true quality diamond? Many times stores’ will have certificates that go along with the diamond from an independent Certified Gemologist vs. other stores that offer their own certificates, which is a conflict of interest or in layman’s terms, a huge no-no! You might see legitimate looking certifications like EGL or IGI or AGL, however the only certification company that is consistently recognized around the world is the GIA. No I don’t work for GIA and no the GIA is not paying me to write this article. If you do any research or understand the diamond trade business at all, GIA will be the one certifying body that most, if not all experts agree is the most qualified to grade stones.

Stuart Kingston Jewelers uses an outside independent professional GIA gemmological appraisal services to ensure your investment in diamonds and precious gems are graded with special care and accuracy. See below some of the characteristics that are examined when grading a diamond (Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight)

Last week, I saw an ad on Face Book that advertized Ray Ban® Sunglasses for $35.00— 1 day only! I thought, “Wow $35.00, when they normally cost $120.00 on average!” Of course I bought them and of course they turned out to be fake, nice glasses for $35.00, but not Ray Bans® even though they say Ray Ban® on the glass. So when a deal seems too good to be true…..well you know the answer. 34

Buying a ring is a daunting task, especially for someone like me who really had no clue where to begin. Edward & the team at Stuart Kingston walked me through every single step of the process. I went down to learn about the differences and Ed gave me some great advice. I started gathering some information about what styles she liked and sent them some pictures. His team helped me design and customize a ring that would be perfect for her. It only took a few weeks to build and they updated me every step of the way. Once it was completed, I was blown away and it made my proposal a lot easier knowing I had a beautiful ring from Stuart Kingston by my side. I would recommend this place to anyone as you won't find a better team to help you from beginning to the end. - Brad Rittle I recently purchased an engagement ring from Stuart Kingston Galleries and can not sing their praises loud enough. I'm a dude, through and through, and had no practical knowledge about buying diamonds; let alone building a ring. They walked me through the entire process, from picking the stone, to custom designing the setting, to getting the ring insured. When they didn't have the diamond I wanted in house, they shopped around for the diamond and found something that hit all of my wants and stayed within my budget. When they delivered the ring, I couldn't have been happier. Best of all, when I delivered the ring she said yes. Thanks Ed, I couldn't have done it without you! - Maximillian Osswald I would never go anywhere else to buy an engagement ring...and I live in Los Angeles. The Stein's are the classiest, most trust worthy people in the jewelry business. I even got my friends in NYC, NJ & CA hooked on the Stein's. We did everything seamlessly through the phone, email and Fed-Ex. When making such a big purchase you really need that trust factor...and you can absolutely trust Stuart Kingston Galleries. - PJ Byrne My cushion cut diamond engagement ring from Stuart Kingston Galleries is absolutely exquisite. My fiancĂŠ collaborated with Edward for months leading up to our proposal and was so grateful for Edward's incredible knowledge and guidance. The design is breathtaking, and the quality impeccable. We couldn't be happier! Not only are we in love with the ring --but it means the world to us to have worked with such an honest and trustworthy jeweler whose expertise is above and beyond. I look forward todesigning our wedding bands with Edward and to visiting Stuart Kingston for other meaningful pieces in the years to come. - Brooke Lyons www.TheWomensJournal.com

I Think I’m Wearing Someone Else’s Hair of Americans fail to keep their resolutions, an impulsive hair adventure could be ugly.

“A Woman Who Cuts Her Hair is About to Change Her Life” – Coco Chanel Love this quote from Coco Chanel. Caution: Literal interpretation is dangerous. Box color and cutting shears are at your fingertips in every CVS, Walmart and so on. It takes talent to walk you confidently through your transformation. See a skilled seasoned professional. There’s a lot to be considered before making the big move.

1. Natural Texture By J. Christian

T

hat phrase. I hear it often from women of all ages. In fact, you would probably be surprised to learn you may have used one of these phrases yourself. “When I look in the mirror I see my Mother, I don’t want to look like my Mother.” “I was born with the wrong hair! It’s too kinky. I just want it to be straight and not frizzy.” “My hair makes me look like an old lady. I don’t want to look like an old lady!”

Dear Hair, If you cooperated in the first place, we wouldn’t have to do this the hard way. Sincerely, Girl with the Flat Iron All women have hair envy; and some, hereditary hair fears. If you find yourself preoccupied with your hair or fighting more than your fair share of bad hair days, it’s time to make a new year’s resolution to resolve your hair dilemma once and for all.

A New Kind of New Year ’s Resolution You’ve heard all the old clichés. New Year, New You; Out with the old, in with the new!

That’s all well and good, except with your hairstyle. Impulsive changes could lead to a new set of issues. Unlike committing to a new diet or exercise routine, the consequences of this change can make you miserable for 6 months or more! Given that 92%

Fine hair looks thicker when shorter. The longer it is the stringier and thinner it looks. Curly, the manageability and overall look of your style is determined by the cut. An advanced stylist has mastered the art of cutting within the architecture of your hair. Square layering (standard American cutting technique) results in that “triangle” hair style all my curly-haired clients abhor with a passion. Your haircut should look great curly or straight.

the right kind of layering (long to mid-length layering) fuller heads of hair can still obtain ideal volume and movement without looking puffy.

“Remember, it is not the box or the bottle that does the work, it is the hands and the mind using the color that is key.” - Rick Wellman 5. Consult Your Stylist or NOT

Not to be snotty or anything, but if your hair has been bugging you long enough to bring you to this article, it may be time to change stylists. Most women hold their relationship with the person they’ve spilled their guts to over the years as very sacred and find it difficult to break off the relationship. But here, consider this for one moment: As with any other profession, once the boundary of professional association is breached, the rules of engagement change. Getting too comfortable in your relationship

can and often does erode the aura of customer service. Comfort leads to complacency. Complacency leads to mediocrity. Mediocrity leads to resentment. Don’t pay to feed feelings of resentment.

6. The Most Important Thing a Girl Wears is Her Confidence

Anyone can rock a version of any style as long as they feel good about it! Embrace the change! Be confident in your new look. By being confident with your new look; you convince others to be confident with it too. J Christian and his wife Marcy Wilkinson, own and operate J Christian Studio in Hockessin, Delaware. J Christian has over 37 years experience in this industry and is an active international artist and master educator. The Studio is full-service, upscale salon with expertise in hair, nails, makeup, executive and standard male grooming, as well as bridal services.

2. The Shape of Your Face

Round face? Short hair and fringe, accentuates roundness. You can go with a longer version of a short cut by keeping the front longer. Longer, leaner lengths around the face narrow a chubby face or broad jaw. Long face? Avoid long hairstyles; they could make your face look longer. Shorter hair will flatter you more and balance out your look by adding some width.

3. Seriously Ask Yourself “How much time am I willing to spend styling my hair each morning?” Be honest here. Truth will prevail anyway. Most styles can be manipulated into a certain shape if cut properly, but if you’re not willing to put the work in to achieve the desired outcome and it’s drastically different from what you have now, go a different route.

ne of the most overlooked choices for Engagement Rings are the Vintage or Antique pieces. Many times those rings have the beauty and character not seen in some of today’s options. The main issue we encounter with antique and vintage rings is they contain center stones just too small for the current large stone trend.

t’s usually displeasure with outward appearance that gets women in the door of Bare Essentials, a bra boutique that offers professional bra fittings. Only after they are fitted properly do women realize how much discomfort they’ve been living with. For thirteen years, owner Debbie Esslinger has developed a bra and lingerie shop with over, 5,000 bras “If you look good, and 90 sizes, so do we! Visit our mostly European With shop and experience designers. seven professional dedicated women fitters on staff, Essentials has doing what we love.” Bare developed a loyal following of women who recognize the importance of a proper fitting bra and shape wear. Many customers who come in to be sized are surprised to see the difference between the bra size they thought they wore and what actually fits them. Size does matter! A “D” cup is no longer considered to be big. The average woman wears a 36C, up from 34B 20 years ago. Bare Essentials carries cup sizes from AA to K and everything in between. Most department and mall stores go up to D or DD, so women didn’t know they had a choice. Now they do. Bare Essentials offers more than proper bra sizing. The hottest shape wear products on the m a r k e t t o d ay a re ava i l a b l e , a l o n g w i t h re c o m m e n d a t i o n s from consultants on the correct compression and size needed.

large. If possible bras should be fit in the LOOSEST hook so the band can be tightened as the bra ages. Here are three easy steps to a perfect Fit.

1. Band snug and anchored low in the back - parallel to the floor. 2. Underwires resting behind all breast tissue and placed close to or beneath the underarm.

By Debbie Esslinger, Owner

I

received a question recently from a woman asking me to help her understand what she was doing wrong with her bra? In her fitting, I had explained the concept of the smaller band/ larger cup bra versus the larger band/smaller cup sizing. These two bra sizes are considered “sisters”. A 34DDD and a 36DD bra would both fit the customer correctly depending on her comfort level. However, if the bra is being worn in the middle or tightest hook, this would be a clue that the bra band is too

3. Center front resting against the chest wall (“tacking”), providing separation.

Many women wear their bras too large in the band causing the bra to ride up in the back. If your band is too big it will make your straps fall and create “back fat” as it is pulled up the back. A proper fitting bra should be even all around the torso from front to back. It should feel like a “hug”. When I founded my shop and began working with bra companies and designers who taught me the art of bra fitting, I was told that 70-85% of women wear the wrong size bra. I saw firsthand that this statistic is correct. You know why? Anyone can find some fault with the way a bra fits if they try hard enough. Each customer has a different view of the tightness of a bra or strap. However, there are certain aspects of the fit that are crucially important. Only you know your comfort level, however, you may not get the look or the proper fit you want if the bra band is too

large. As mentioned, certain key aspects of a good fitting bra are taught to my fitting team and I believe are important to a woman’s shape and appearance. FORGET ABOUT THE NUMBERS AND THE LETTERS. Just see how good you look in the mirror.

Not sure when to replace your bra? If your bra is at the tightest hook but still rides up your back, you are not getting any lift because the band has stretched to its maximum capacity. Bras normally last 6 months with proper care and rotation. Laundering your bras and other undergarments is very important to the life of the garment. We recommend Forever New instead of harmful soaps, detergents and bleaches that destroy beautiful, expensive fabrics. Gorgeous lingerie with its important elastic fitting memory need Forever New. The dryer is not your friend and heat hurts. Air drying is recommended. Proper Care Doesn’t Cost - It Pays! Forever New is available here in both liquid and powder. The Stain Remedy is wonderful for removal of most difficult stains.

As we all know bras and swimsuits are two items many women dread shopping for most. The fit team at Bare Essentials are experts in helping you find a bra you love and a swimsuit you never thought you would find, starting in D cup. The bra companies we rely on for superior fit provide swimsuits with bra fitting styles for both the young woman and the more mature lady. You are so much more than a number and we are here to help you prove it.

The Skinny On Permanent Makeup… A

s Permanent Cosmetics is a fast growing industry, most women have at least heard of the glorious notion of “never having to apply makeup again.” Many women have considered the possibilities of permanent makeup, for themselves or for someone else, knowing that such procedures could make a tremendous difference, even a life change. However, in our busy worlds not all have found the time to explore even the most basic aspects of the procedures, putting it “on the list” as we say, hoping to eventually find the time to learn more. We are here to clarify. So, we are fully aware that we can permanently enhance our natural beauty with permanent eyeliner, brows, and or lips. Did you know she also does areola tattooing and scar camouflaging? What does it take to achieve the perfection that Carmella is recognized for in the tri-state area? Does it hurt, how long does it last, and what can I expect? Read on my friend, read on. It is very important that when considering the procedure(s), one understands that 2 visits are crucial to achieving the desired results, and that these visits must be 4 weeks apart (6 for lips). “Meticulous” is an understatement when describing Carmella’s artistry. She likes to say the first round is baking the cake, and the second is the icing. She is committed to perfection, and by requiring 2 sessions, she has achieved her honorable reputation for which she is known by. So if you’re planning to be finished for a special event, plan ahead, two months to be safe. As far as the procedure itself, it is comforting to know that there is always a consultation prior to any application of pigment. During this time, together you will pick colors, discuss shapes and lines, and come to an agreement on what is to be expected for the final result. There are no surprises, only possibilities. With her decades of skin care and makeup expertise, she often makes suggestions to clients they never even considered, opening up and enhancing facial features to their highest potential. Ultimately the client makes the decision, and Carmella delivers. The consultation is always free, and can be done by itself or along with the first procedure, depending on where you are in your decision making process.

Permanent cosmetic pigment is made of all natural minerals, and it does fade over time, especially with prolonged sun exposure. Certain products and medications, such as glycolic or Retin-A can also cause premature fading of the tattoos. It is best to avoid these products around your makeup area, and ALWAYS wear SPF (even in the winter!) to protect your skin and your investment in yourself. Color boosting your make up every 1 to 7 years is the best way to keep your fresh, youthful color. Every person’s skin is unique, as will be your makeup. The good news is you don’t have to keep up with the maintenance if you feel you no longer care for the enhanced look. It will not turn blue or black. It will simply fade over time, eventually leaving no trace. Honestly though, it will be hard to return to the drudgery of the daily makeup grind. One gets a bit spoiled you know, and it’s hard to go back to the old way. Yes, you can wake-up with makeup, you can exercise, swim, sweat and play and you’ll have no smears or smudges.

For those interested in scar camouflaging and/or areola restoration, it would behoove you to come in for the free consultation, especially if it is something to boost your esteem. Carmella’s color theory is unmatched, and her delicate manner only adds to the warm hearted experience. With her expertise and education, she has managed to create a three dimensional looking areola/nipple for those with breast reconstruction, giving self-confidence and naturalness back to the women who’ve fought and deserve it. Most light pink or white scars can be blended to appear as if they didn’t exist, regardless of their location on the body. Sometimes looking good is a great start to feeling good, and together, it’s in the direction towards wellness.

After the consultation, if you’re ready to go ahead, you will relax in the chair while she applies a topical numbing cream to the area(s) to be worked on. She reapplies this several times throughout the procedure to ensure the highest level of comfort with little or no pain at all. When you’re through (brows and liner take about an hour and a half, full lip takes about 1.5-2 hours on average), you will be given a little care package with instructions for home care. At first, your make up will appear very fresh and bright, kind of unnatural. This will last for 2-5 days, while the pigment flakes off on its own. (It is important that you do not pick or peel at the dried ink, it has to absorb into the dermal layer!!) It is advisable not to make any major social plans during this time. It will take 4 weeks for the skin to heal and the pigment to fully resurface. Often after the first round there will be spots or areas where the pigment completely absorbed and did not resurface. This is when you come for the second seating and perfection is achieved. Carmella always gives 150% and prides herself in her artwork, a feeling that is obvious when you are in her hands.

early 85 percent of all people have acne at some point in their lives. For most people, acne is an inherited condition of the pores. When someone is prone to acne, their pores become blocked with dead skin cells much faster than normal. The solution lies in products that penetrate the pore and prevent dead skin cells from building up. Professional Acne Treatments done by an Acne Specialist will help you to get rid of acne and clear your skin more quickly than with just products alone.

Why Get Professional Acne Treatments? 1. To monitor your progress and make changes to your home-care as needed. 2. To exfoliate the skin so that home-care products can penetrate the pore more easily. 3. To lighten dark spots that are caused by acne lesions. 4. To hydrate the skin so that the skin is receptive to your home-care regimen. 5. To extract existing acne impactions. 6. To kill acne bacteria inside the pore. Erica Suppa is the owner of Fresh Faced Skin Care, an advanced skin care clinic with locations in Chadds Ford, PA and in Historic New Castle, DE. How Parents Can Help Children Prepare For Assessment Tests T

hese days, helping your student strengthen his or her testPresented By Maggie Lage taking skills takes on new meaning if Article By you live in a state Dr. Raymond J Huntington, that has adopted Co-Founder of Huntington Learning Center the Common Core State Standards — and the standards’ newly aligned assessment tests. Two consortiums are currently rolling out the next generation of assessments to measure students’ progress toward college and career readiness (the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career (PARCC) and the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC)). That means that the standardized tests that your child has taken in the past will look very different. In addition, school curriculums and expectations of students are significantly different than under the previous state standards. How can you help your child do his or her best on assessment tests? Here are several trusted tips to share with your child to insure the best chance for success on these or any important exams: • Read all questions carefully and follow the directions. On any test, it is critical that you identify each question being asked before rushing into solving or answering the problem. • Narrow down choices. If you are unsure of the answer to a question, eliminate choices that do not make sense or are obviously incorrect (for example, answers that include words such as always and never are red flags). • When working on math problems, eliminate extra information provided that has nothing to do with the question being asked. • If you get stuck on problems, mark them and move on. You can return to them later if you have time at the end of the test, but don’t waste valuable test time spinning your wheels. • Pace yourself. At the outset of a test, do a quick calculation of how many minutes you have for each question—and give a little extra time for essay questions. Try to leave a few minutes

at the end of every test to revisit skipped or troublesome problems. • Draw out problems to help yourself visualize them better. • Minimize test anxiety by keeping things in perspective. Remind yourself that tests are simply how teachers can evaluate what you know. The best form of test preparation is to keep up with homework and in-class work. What can you do to prepare your student for Common Core-aligned assessment tests? Here are a few suggestions: • Talk with your child’s teacher about how you can ease your child’s transition to school work and tests under the Common Core State Standards. • Continue to emphasize the importance of thinking critically—an area of elevated importance under Common Core. Ask questions about what your child reads and learns. Encourage your child to talk about how he or she feels about stories, current events and more. Have your child explain his or her thinking — in both math and reading. • Embrace technology in your household. The new standards focus heavily on the skills needed by today’s 21st-century digital learners and incorporate research and media skills into all content areas. As always, one of the best ways to help your child do his or her best on any exam is to equip them with good study skills and habits. It is also important that you stay apprised of the curriculum changes that are happening in your child’s classroom and understand how those may impact the tests that your child takes.

Real-life Learning A

ll of us learn better by doing. This principle prompted the instructors in the University of Delaware’s Social Media Marketing Strategy Certificate to include a real life consulting project for an area nonprofit into the program. The first time the certificate was offered, participants teamed up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware to fine-tune the organization’s social media communication strategy. Since then, consulting projects have also been completed with Bellevue Community Center in Wilmington, and the dropout prevention program Communities In Schools of Delaware. With its focus on how to develop a social media marketing campaign and improve an organization’s social media presence, the program attracts a variety of professionals from the region. “For the students, the opportunity to work with a client is always a highlight,” said Meredith Chapman, UD’s director of digital communications, who serves as the program director and primary instructor. “Working hands-on with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware was a really great experience,” commented Christine E. Serio, one of the first graduates of the UD certificate program and an external communications specialist for Blood Bank of Delmarva. “Not only did we get a chance to delve more deeply into such an

It’s one thing to learn theories, strategies and techniques and apply them to hypothetical situations, but it is much more beneficial to be working on an actual, real-life situation,” added Serio. “We were looking to better utilize social media to help us meet our two primary goals of recruiting volunteer mentors and raising much-needed funds,” explained Mary Fox, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware. “The members of the class really understood this and their proposals were all directly tied to these objectives.” “The proposals included very solid takeaways, some that could be easily implemented right away and others that could be effectively worked into a longer-range social media strategy plan. We received hours of professional consultation services that will really benefit our organization – what a valuable experience!” added Fox.

Offered by the University of Delaware’s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies, the certificate program is seeking to partner with another nonprofit organization, willing to discuss its goals and business strategies with the program participants, and at a developing stage in their social media presence. A Happy & Healthy 2015 N

ew Year’s resolutions, sneakers, carrot and celery sticks, protein shakes, exercise equipment, and all things pointing to the move to improve that clutter our minds, refrigerators, cars and homes. Whether our primary concern is our health, appearance, or both, losing just 10-15 pounds and getting 30 minutes of exercise five days a week can prevent or delay diabetes in people with prediabetes. Twenty five percent of adults 20+ years of age or older have diagnosed or undiagnosed pre-diabetes. Diabetes is a serious and costly epidemic that poses a major public health problem. The American Diabetes Association believes that if we are to truly make an impact against this devastating disease we must engage our communities on every level, in every facet of our mission. One of ADA’s strategic partners locally is Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD). BBD supplies life saving blood and blood products to the hospitals in the Delmarva region as well as some in adjacent areas. Being one of the first blood centers in the country to do so, BBD over the last ten years has offered its donors the opportunity to have their glucose levels tested when they donate blood. In that span of time, almost 100,000 donors have taken advantage of this option. More importantly, over 19,000 of those tested were advised to contact their primary care physician to share their results, and potentially begin treatment. ADA and BBD believe services such as this are making a significant difference in the lives of people in our community and aids in working toward a healthier and better informed population. The American Diabetes Association thanks the Blood Bank of Delmarva for their passion and commitment to our mission, in addition to some of our other key partners including AstraZeneca, Christiana Care Health System, Eli Lilly, Morris James LLP, Walgreens, The New Castle County Women’s Journal, The State of Delaware, Delaware Today and Highmark BlueCross BlueShield of Delaware. My personal thanks to Delaware’s 2014 Leadership Board; Jim Lenhard, MD, Andrew Bianchino, CJ Jones, Tony Uniatowski, Nash Childs, A. Kimberly Hoffman, Ron Morris, Angi Feldman, Scott Wilcox, Lisa Lindsay, Charlie Tomlinson, Bob Cox, and Michael McGill, without whom we would not have made the significant impact we did in our great state last year. Have a happy and healthy 2015.

The Burden Of Diabetes In Delaware Presented by Susan Polikoff Director, Delaware, American Diabetes Association

Diabetes is a common disease: • Approximately 75,000 adults, or 8.10% of Delaware’s adult population, have diagnosed diabetes. • Adults without diabetes who are overweight and not physically active are at risk of developing diabetes • 64% of all adults in Delaware are overweight or obese Diabetes is a serious disease: • People with diabetes in Delaware suffer from many diabetes-related complications, including lower extremity amputation, end-stage renal disease, and blindness due to diabetic retinopathy. • If current trends continue, one in three US adults could have diabetes by the year 2050. Diabetes is a costly disease: • People diagnosed with diabetes have medical expenses that are approximately 2.3 times higher than people who do not have diabetes. • Individuals with diabetes spent approximately $13,700 on medical costs in 2012. • In 2012, diabetic expenses in Delaware totaled $860 million, and indirect expenses, such as lost productivity and premature mortality, totaled over $260 million. Handling Market Volatility less volatile investments. But before you leap into a different investment strategy, make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons. How you choose to invest your money should be consistent with your goals and time horizon.

Though there’s no foolproof way to handle the ups and downs of the stock market, the following common sense tips can help.

Don’t put your eggs all in one basket Diversifying your investment portfolio is one of the key tools for trying to manage market volatility. Because asset classes often perform differently under different market conditions, spreading your assets across a variety of investments such as stocks, bonds, and cash alternatives has the potential to help reduce your overall risk.

Focus on the forest, not on the trees As the market goes up and down, it’s easy to become too focused on day-to-day returns. Instead, keep your eyes on your long-term investing goals and your overall portfolio.

Look before you leap When the market goes down and investment losses pile up, you may be tempted to pull out of the stock market altogether and look for

Look for the silver lining A down market, like every cloud, has a silver lining. The silver lining of a down market is the opportunity you have to buy shares of stock at lower prices.

Don’t stick your head in the sand While focusing too much on short-term gains or losses is unwise, so is ignoring your investments. You should check up on your portfolio at least once a year, more frequently if the market is particularly volatile or when there have been significant changes in your life.

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch As the market recovers from a down cycle, elation quickly sets in. If the upswing lasts long enough, it’s easy to believe that investing in the stock market is a sure thing. But, of course, it never is. As many investors have learned the hard way, becoming overly optimistic about investing during the good times can be as detrimental as worrying too much during the bad times. The right approach during all kinds of markets is to be realistic. of one to a multitude.

Why wouldn’t we want to clarify or deliver a message faster? Another very close phrase published in 1911, "Use a picture. It's worth a thousand words." quoted by the newspaper editor Arthur Brisbane discussing journalism and publicity. The Russian writer Ivan Turgenev who wrote Fathers and Sons in 1862, said, "A picture shows me at a glance what it takes dozens of pages of a book to expound." The psychologist Jerome Bruner of New York University has described studies that show that people only remember 10% of what they hear and 20% of what they read, but about 80% of what they see and do.

So now that you know the importance of visual aids, the next step is using them. You can always use the freebie (clip art) that comes with most of the software today, but when you really want to stand out, you need original art! Original art can depict your message or tell your story which will be best provided by an Illustrator. An illustration can bring to life a logo, article, story, poem, event poster or piece of textual information by providing a visual representation of something described in the text. Illustration comes from the Latin word illustra'tio, illu'stro meaning enlighten, irradiate. An illustration is a “PICTURE” a depiction made by an artist, such as a drawing, sketch, painting, photograph, or other kinds graphic means.

“It’s Just A Sign, It Doesn’t Have To Be Professional.” ? y l l a e R , h O

rom the business card in your pocket By Carol Mack Warner to the digital billboard President you see on the highway while going to work, signs are so much a part of your everyday life you take them for granted. Outside to inside, lobby to office, in the home, everywhere, signs are there to announce, inform, direct, warn and guide. Signs are a visual, non-verbal way to communicate and not just by the words alone. The type of sign, location, choice of font or letter style, sizing, layout and design all play a part in getting the message and your best image across. It’s not just a sign – it’s tells others who you are and if designed correctly, will attract the type of client you want. I have a friend who decides where she will eat if she likes the sign outside. If it’s neglected, she wonders what else is being neglected. This applies to all the signage you have in your business. Does your print material reflect the type of business you do? A comic book store will likely suffer using signage that a funeral home would use and vice versa. A comic book letter style and super hero are as out of place as somber tones and lettering are for the comic book store. Where do you go and what do you look for when searching for a graphics professional? Often word of mouth is a good way to start but don’t stop there unless they make you feel welcome and comfortable to discuss your needs. A full service sign company can save time and money if they fit. They can design and produce the final product without having to search out a company to produce your sign. A good relationship should form and they can provide other types of signs that follow your look without having to repeat the introduction process. If you want a logo designed, determine the purchase price of the design package so you can own the artwork. This is standard in the industry and should be discussed prior to work being done. This will allow you to take and use your artwork freely. Remember it is your business and you are the driver, so don’t be intimidated if it doesn’t work for you. If you work with the designer, you should be asked a variety of questions including the type of client you want to attract. Yes, that is what a sign can do by the way it is designed. All you have to do is watch TV advertisements to see how that works. Other questions include a discussion of the following topics: Type of sign, where will it be located and mounted, what are you trying to say and conveying the message using the visual clues of font style, colors and images.

Type of Sign: The type of sign is determined by the purpose and what you want to say: Large format printing, posters, banners, A.D.A. interior signage, real estate site signs, traffic signs, business cards, engraving, raised lettering, cast bronze plaques, flags, specialty items, vehicle lettering, car wraps, window lettering, labels, decals, magnets, directories, trade show, floor graphics and custom items all have different properties and uses. It is amazing to think that many weren’t in existence even 20 years ago. New products are coming out all the time. Location: What distance away from the sign will viewer stand? How will it be mounted? Please check with your township for the appropriate permits and regulations for exterior signs. A.D.A.(American Disabilities Act) signage with raised lettering and Braille II translation also have specifications for production, installation and use. Layout - Image This is where your message will work or fail. The layout of your message is influenced by many considerations including purpose, fonts or letter style, graphics or icons, color and size. If your message is to announce your place of business, then it is important to be visible from

the street quickly – so cars passing by can see the sign easily within the few seconds they pass by. Remember, this applies to vehicle lettering as well. The back door is a “billboard” and gets the greatest length of viewing time from the people traveling or stopping behind the vehicle. Drivers pass by the sides quickly, their eyes on traffic ahead. This valuable “real estate” needs to be optimized for quick viewing. Window lettering, banners, interior placards, business cards and brochures are saved for more detailed information. Traffic, parking and warning signs are designed to impact immediately and are simple and direct. Choice of font or letter style, graphics and materials express more information than the written message. The prospective client gets a feeling about the business from the sign: “It looks like it’s a good, clean and friendly place to eat.” “Too cheap looking – the furniture will probably fall apart.” “Outdated and bad maintenance – probably cutting back on quality.” “New sign – they must be doing well –let’s try it.” Handwritten signs are pretty much a thing of the past except in “back in 5 minutes” type of situations. Do not confuse this with professional hand lettering, almost a lost art in the industry and highly prized. The office printer is common place and can be forgiven to be used as temporary signage. After a short period of time, the sign should be removed or replaced if the message is a permanent one. Temporary signage gets tattered, worn and generally lacks the authority of your company image. There is more to it than just written words. It’s an opportunity for prospective and current customers to identify with your business and image. An experienced, professional graphic designer and sign maker will make your signs work for you.

So it isn’t just a sign. Really. “This is the second set of signs that Carol has made for my business, and just like the first time the signs look great, and the turn around time was unbelievable for the delivery of the signs. Not only did she put the signs up perfectly, she also rushed and had them up for my OPEN HOUSE, Thanks” ~ H. Shafer, Rehoboth, DE

Pre-Nup? I Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Pre-Nup! Okay, before you become completely appalled that I would even write about such a topic in the annual Bridal Issue let’s take this one step at a time. We’ll start with a quiz: 1) What do you know about prenup agreements?

By Shana A. Pinter, Esq.

a. Just what I’ve heard about on TV. b. Nothing. c. Enough to know that I should have had one before I married by first husband/wife.

2) Do you think they are just for the rich and famous? a. Yes. b. No. c. Of course, nothing I have is even worth protecting … although I did work for about 10 years prior to getting married and scrimped and saved to buy the house we’re about to buy with my money and none of his/her funds are going towards the down payment …

3) What do you know about ante-nup agreements? a. Ante-what agreements? b. A little (I work at a law firm). c. Enough to know that I should have had one during my marriage to my second husband/wife. In this article I attempt to dispel the myths of pre-nuptial agreements, explain their advantages, and how such an agreement is beneficial. I also explain what an ante-nuptial agreement is and their benefits as well. As discussed in previous articles (found on my website www.pinterlawonline.com), property acquired prior to marriage is generally considered pre-marital. However, a pre-nup puts the non-marital nature of such property in black and white and excludes it from division therefore saving you legal fees and time. Also, due to space constraints, this article is only an elementary discussion of pre-nups and ante-nups. For further and more in depth discussion, please visit my blog at www.pinterlawonline.com. A pre-nuptial, or “pre-nup” as it’s commonly referred to, is a legally binding contract between two expectant spouses which is executed prior to marriage. It describes what property is owned by whom, that each person has full knowledge of the assets of the other person, and how that property should be divided (i.e., excluded) in the event of a divorce.

By entering into a pre-nup that lists those properties as non-marital and therefore excluded from any property division in the event of a divorce when Mr. or Ms. Right turns out to be Mr. or Ms. Right-for- someone-else-but-not-for-me, you are protecting them from having to be divided and therefore protecting yourself and your family by keeping the gains you all worked so hard for.

Myth Two: Only really rich people need a pre-nup. FALSE. While “rich” people may be more likely to get a pre-nup and understand (and appreciate) its importance, many other people can benefit. Think about your artsy friend who has worked for 10 years on her art/fashion line/music and is finally breaking into the “scene” and getting paid for her inspired works. Or think about your friend who has been single (on purpose!), just recently started a business which is struggling, but has a lot of potential, and now, at 42, decides to get married. Both of these women are perfect examples of who should be protecting all that they’ve worked for – which right now isn’t a lot but both have the potential to grow exponentially. And I don’t mean just in money terms. I also mean the actual rights to that art/fashion line/ music/business-with-lots-of-potential. By entering into a pre-nup these women are protecting their passion, in all honesty, from having to be separated into pieces and distributed during property division. Just briefly on ante-nuptial agreements – these are agreements that are entered into by spouses after marriage and protect assets that are the result

of the work of one of the spouses so that those specific assets are excluded from division during a divorce. Think of your friend who started a law firm after she was married for several years to her husband and she worked alone on that law firm with virtually no input from her husband. Under property division laws in Delaware, this business is marital and subject to division in divorce. However, if your friend enters into an ante-nup agreement with her husband excluding her law firm from marital assets, the success culled from all of her hard work, tears, and perseverance will be protected in the event she gets divorced (note to self – draft ante-nup agreement). In conclusion, I hope this article sheds some light on the issues of pre-nup agreements and introduced you to the concept of ante-nup agreements – and puts them in a better light. Again, as space is limited – and there’s so much more to explain – please visit my blog at www.pinterlawonline.com.

Wishing you peace of mind and contentment, Shana Shana A. Pinter, Esq., is the founding attorney of Pinter Law, LLC, a law firm dedicated primarily to family law. She has been practicing since 2009 and founded Pinter Law, LLC, to increase access to legal assistance to those facing challenges within their families. This article is provided for informational purposes only, does not constitute and should not be relied upon as legal advice, and is not guaranteed to be correct, complete or up-to-date.

Myth One: Getting a pre-nup means that we expect to end up getting a divorce. FALSE A pre-nup protects the assets that you, and possibly your family, have spent significant time accumulating. It’s all about protection. For instance, you and your family have purchased real property through a family partnership established just for that purpose. You, therefore, are an owner of, say, 5 properties. This was all accumulated during a time when you didn’t even know Mr. or Ms. Right.

What Happens When The Caregiver Becomes The Patient? Delaware Workers’ Compensation Law

By Heather A. Long, Esq.

N

urses, therapists, medical technicians and other healthcare workers put their own health on the line every day as they care for their patients. In 2012, registered nurses and nursing assistants in Delaware had a combined total of 270 nonfatal work injuries that caused them to miss time from work. During that same time, and measuring the same nonfatal work injuries, construction workers had only 70 work injuries in comparison. Normally, we don’t think of healthcare workers as being employed in a “dangerous occupation” but the Delaware Department of Labor statistics certainly suggest otherwise. Some of the more common healthcare worker injuries are sprain and strain of the neck and back, rotator cuff injuries, needles sticks, assault by combative patients, concussions and slip and fall type injuries. These injuries can be brought about by virtually any aspect of patient care, and just about every healthcare worker has sustained at least one, if not several, of these types of work injuries. Healthcare workers are used to being the caregivers. They often experience hesitation, anxiety and reluctance for allowing others to take care of them. For that reason, many healthcare injuries go unreported, and the workers attempt to nurse themselves back to good health. Sometimes that works, but oftentimes it does not. As with every other aspect of healthcare, documentation is key. Therefore, if you are injured www.TheWomensJournal.com

(particularly as a healthcare worker) it is necessary to inform your supervisor and document the injury. Ask your supervisor to fill out a “First Report of Injury” and give you a copy. Also, make a note of any witnesses to your injury, and take pictures of any obvious bruising, cuts, scrapes or other outward signs of injury. This is exactly the type of situation where an ounce of prevention can equal a pound of cure, because as all healthcare workers know- if it isn’t documented, it didn’t happen! Once your workers’ compensation injury has been accepted by the insurance company, you may be entitled to benefits including medical expenses, wage replacement, mileage reimbursement, permanent impairment and disfigurement compensation. If you are injured at work, particularly if you work in the healthcare field, immediate and accurate documentation regarding the injury you sustained and how it occurred is of utmost importance. In order to make sure that your injury is properly documented, I highly recommend: 1. That you inform your supervisor in writing about your injury; and 2. You consult with an attorney to ensure that you will receive all the benefits to which you are entitled. I offer free consultations with no attorney’s fee to be paid until your case is settled. This gives you the peace of mind you need in order to focus on the most important thing- your health.

Court Costs Awarded To Injured Victim

For Demonstrative Visual Aids Used At Trial

R

ecently the Morris James Personal Injury team tried a personal injury case in Delaware’s Superior Court and were successful in getting a very good verdict for the client, in large part due to their utilization of cutting edge visual trial graphics. A good trial attorney is a good story teller. Unfolding the story to a jury is much more effective today with the support and use of visual aids. Jurors not only want to hear about the incident, they want to see what is at issue. In this particular case the jury heard evidence of significant spinal cord injuries from three doctors and one dentist. At times, the information was very technical and intricate. To assist the jurors in understanding the medical evidence, the Morris James Personal Injury trial team used visual graphic illustrations and computer animations to assist the jurors by allowing them to visually see and better understand the extent of the injuries suffered by the client victim as a result of a serious motor vehicle accident. We believe, when compared to other jury verdicts for similar injuries in this case, the use of the visual aids and animations increased

Being the very best story tellers we can be by utilizing cutting edge technology to help our injured clients achieve the result they deserve is what makes our job so challenging and rewarding.

that evidence. Here the technology utilized in the expert depositions played at trial, and the custom visual aids created for the jury, greatly assisted the jury in understanding the medical evidence pertaining to causation and damages.”

the overall value of the victim’s injuries in the jurors’ minds. While visual graphics and animations are commonly seen in courtrooms on television and in the movies, the use of these graphics is very costly and not as commonly used in the “real” courtrooms of our community as often as one would think. One of the reasons these visual graphics are not used is because Delaware Judges have routinely denied successful plaintiffs reimbursement of visual graphics and illustrations costs used at trial. However, it is our understanding that this case was the first Delaware case in which a Superior Court judge ordered that the defendant’s insurance company pay fees incurred by the injured victim for costs associated in presenting demonstrative aids.

The Judge noted that other federal courts have long recognized, “Computers, computer graphics, digitized documents, and other technological advancements have become important tools of the modern-day trial lawyer.” DiBella v. Hopkins, 407 F. Supp. 2d 537, 540 (S.D.N.Y. 2005). Courts recognize trial graphics and visuals aids help the jury by focusing attention on salient documents and concepts. Courts recognize these demonstrative aids are useful at trial because it is an educational process.

By Susan D’Alonzo Ament Susan D’Alonzo Ament is a partner with Morris James LLP and has practiced for 31 years representing personal injury victims. Over the years, Mrs. Ament has found that some women don’t understand the crucial need to have adequate automobile insurance coverage in the event of a serious accident. Susan Ament educates women on these needs every day in her practice and in seminars that she presents throughout the year.

This ruling will result in the more frequent future use of these aids and will help the skilled and creative trial attorney tell the story of the injured person. This is significant for all future victims that require a jury to decide the value of their case.

The Superior Court judge wrote in her decision: “The Court recognizes 21st century technology, such as computer graphics and digitized documents, are very effective tools in jury trials. Not only do they enable jurors to better understand the evidence, but they aid in the efficient and orderly presentation of

The effective presentation of a jury trial is ever changing and evolving.

Some have not had the opportunity to taste a white balsamic vinegar, they are light, crisp and delicious! White balsamic vinegars have a sweet, subtle flavor, come in a clean color and are primarily served with light colored foods. The exception to this is mixing it with a Fusions Taster’s Choice Olive Oil creating your own salad dressing served

on a bed of crisp mixed greens with feta cheese, some grape tomatoes and a sprinkle of sunflower seeds. When using dark balsamic vinegars, the color of your food will take on a dark hue much like the dark vinegar used, white vinegars do not discolor your foods. Fusions Taster’s Choice Both White and Dark Balsamic Vinegars have these health benefits: • Low in Calories – only need to use 1tablespoon or less, Fusions is 10 calories, a little goes a long way, great flavor • Normalizes Blood Pressure - reduces the hardening of arteries, also known as

atherosclerosis. Because of this, balsamic vinegar also lowers and stabilizes blood pressure levels • Stabilizes Cholesterol - the polyphenols in balsamic vinegar limits the ability of LDL cholesterol to oxidize • Steadies Blood Glucose Levels - Balsamic vinegar is low on the glycemic index and will not cause spikes in your blood glucose levels. These are a few benefits, but there are many more. Use when cooking, marinating or making a vinaigrette. Stop by the store if you are looking for inspiration.

Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oils and Balsamic Vinegars, distinctively selected from a premium collection of 50 plus estates – fused and naturally flavored. We are exhibiting selections to woo your palate ~ “Taster’s Choice.

Buying Local Supports Community

By Jenn Adams

O

pening Fresh Thymes our main goal was providing real whole food to our community and source from local chemical free farmers as much as possible. We wanted to create a place for all people to feel welcome so we designed a menu for vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores. Working with small local farmers we know where our food is coming from, how it is being produced, and supports www.TheWomensJournal.com

their livelihood. If we lose our small farmers, we lose our food supply. Sourcing food locally reduces the carbon footprint making Mother Earth happier and keeps the income flowing within our local community. The community sustains our business. We have met so many amazing people. As the community supports us through our ups and downs, we are happy to support our community. It feels good to help others. We created a happy little corner and thanks to social media attract tourists. It is so much fun meeting people from other areas, hearing how beautiful our city is, and making recommendations of things to do. It’s also really neat to hear people say, “It’s nice your community has great places like this. It makes me realize we created the

type of place we would search for on our travels. As a small business owner my thought processes have changed. I rarely shop in national chain stores anymore. I first think what small business can I support. Why support the small business and maybe not make the one stop convenient shop? I know how hardworking, passionate, and the integrity those small businesses have. I know I am supporting their livelihood as they support ours. I know that they care about our community as much as we do. The prices might be a little higher, but I know that the investment is going to help a family in our community. Small businesses are the backbone of our community, express the character of our city, appeal 65

to visitors, and make us want to call Delaware home. Think local first + buy local when you can = Being a local! Jenn Adams, owner of Fresh Thymes CafĂŠ,

is originally from Illinois and grew up in a farming family. She understands the importance of supporting local farms. Her mission is to educate and provide quality local and organic food for the community.

t’s all too familiar; it’s a new year and you pledge to lose a few pounds; to join a gym and start a new exercise routine, vowing to count every last calorie. A healthy lifestyle starts here, at Elements of Nutrition, with a Registered Dietitian on site, you are bound to find anything you are looking for. Located on Kirkwood Highway, E.O.N brings you some of the newest yet most effective supplements, body care products, Non-GMO verified products, and healthy lifestyle choices! Begin the New Year by making better choices, for example, add vegetables to the foods you love— like eating pizza topped with spinach, broccoli, and green peppers instead of sausage and pepperoni. Swap the all-or-nothing approach for one or two healthy switch-ups in your daily routine. For instance, eat breakfast of about 300 calories –a healthy mix of protein and whole grains; additionally, budget for the treats you love, by eating healthy snacks like carrots and hummus, so you can occasionally splurge on decadent treats like dark chocolate. In the New Year, try to be mindful of your choices, and portion sizes while looking forward to going to the gym, by loading an iPod with feel good jams. This will put you in an upbeat mood, and push you, which translates to an energizing

positive mood, which just might keep you there wanting to hear your entire playlist. There is no shame in having a health issue. Elements of Nutrition has what you need to keep healthy, and to stay focused. We welcome all lifestyles! Stop by... Testimonials “Great local store with fresh organic produce! You can once again have safe, delicious drinking water straight from the tap. Joseph Frederick & Sons’ water filtration team can test, diagnose, and treat your water so that you can be confident in its safety and happy with its quality. The RO filter mounts under your sink, or in the basement below your sink, providing you with unlimited fresh, purified water every day, without polluting the environment with plastic bottles.

Did you know: • Drinking tap water costs about $0.23 per day for a family of four, compared to about $1.25 per day for bottled water. • Bottled water produces up to 1.5 million tons of plastic waste per year. • That plastic requires up to 47 million gallons of oil per year to produce. • More than 80 percent of plastic bottles are simply thrown away, not recycled. Joan Wuertz Receives Award For 30 Years Volunteer Service For Delaware Hospice J

oan Wuertz joined Delaware Hospice as a volunteer in 1984 with a passion for hospice care that was unusual in those early years. Joan was a nurse in the U.K., Canada and Washington DC before retiring in Delaware. She volunteered for a cancer ward in Wilmington, where she became quite discouraged with the treatment of terminal patients. “Visiting hours were very strict, which left patients alone when they needed to be with their loved ones. Patients were hauled away for radiation and treatments when they should have been resting. Pain medications were rigidly administered, regardless of the comfort of the patient.” Then, while vacationing in England, Joan had the incredible opportunity to visit an uncle who happened to be a patient at the world’s first hospice— St. Christopher’s, founded by Dame Cicily Saunders. “I was amazed at what I discovered there. People could be happy. There was a tremendous amount of pain control. Dogs and children visited at all hours. There was an overwhelming sense of peace and comfort. I witnessed not only acceptance of their condition by patients, but also dignity and respect surrounding them. It was so different than what I had experienced in oncology departments in hospitals in the U.S.” After her return to her home in Wilmington, a friend, Gloria Thornley, called, who had just become the first volunteer coordinator for the newly-founded Delaware Hospice. She asked Joan if she might be interested in volunteering, offering assistance to patients and families in the program. Joan replied, “Absolutely! Where do I sign up?” Thirty years later, she has never tired of supporting these families during their time of need!

www.TheWomensJournal.com

“Things were naturally different in 1984, when Delaware Hospice cared for a total of 10-15 patients per week.” Joan said, “Volunteers provided a great deal more care for the patients in the early years. “We often performed services which are handled by nursing assistants today, such as bathing the patient or changing bed linens. There were only a couple of nurses on staff, and they would take turns doing rotations at night. They were happy to have somebody go out with them at 2 a.m., so they would come by and pick me up to ride along with them.”

About Delaware Hospice Since 1982, Delaware Hospice has provided exceptional care and support to 46,000 patients and their families. Its mission is to help each patient, each day, live the fullest, most comfortable life possible. Delaware Hospice is the largest and only licensed, nonprofit, community-based hospice serving Delaware and southern Chester and Delaware counties in Pennsylvania. Delaware Hospice is honored to be accredited by the Joint Commission, the nation’s leading health care standards-setting and accrediting organization. For more information about Delaware Hospice’s programs and services, upcoming events, or employment opportunities, call 800-838-9800 or visit our website, www. delawarehospice.org/get-help-now/resources/end-of-life-planning.

Modern technology has alleviated a few challenges faced in those first years of Delaware Hospice’s existence. Joan remembered, “We always carried change for telephone calls since there were no cell phones. Everything was documented by paper. Nurses were not permitted to make pronouncements, so often we sat with families several hours through the night until a physician could come to the house.” Joan’s warm personality suits her volunteer role as patient/ family support, and she has clearly enjoyed the relationships with family members. “I’ve met and become close to so many memorable people over the years through listening and sharing stories. One patient was compulsive about bathing every day. No one came on weekends, so I would go to give her a bed bath. One family’s mother was ill, so I took her two teenagers shopping for school clothes. That was an experience I’ll never forget!”

It’s your life. We’ll help you live it. She’s always been the one who could turn any day into a magical adventure. At Delaware Hospice, we’ll see her through your eyes and be there with comfort and care. We’ll respond quickly when you need us. And through our expert pain and symptom management we’ll give her those days where she can still turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.

“People say, ‘We can’t thank you enough,’ but they don’t understand that we get more from them than we give. It’s wonderful to feel that you were useful. You think more about your own life, count your blessings and appreciate what you have.”

Because she’s not just a patient, she’s Grandma.

Women’s Journal What our advertisers say about The Women’s Journal: “I just wanted to let you know that the editorial that we did last issue was a great success for us. It brought us customers that were selling and gold that otherwise we probably would not have had. Our Gold / Silver buying aspect of our business is VERY important to us. We had a great response!” - Jewelry Exchange of Delaware The Women’s Journal has proven time and again to be the most “ advantageous and well-rounded business builder for the salon comparenone. Each new issue brings a sharp uptick in our referrals sometimes reaching 60 new referrals per article. The editors are fair, customer-service focused, and continuously improving on the paper year-after-year. We will contribute as long as they’ll have us.” - J Christian, J Christian Studio

“Thank you for your wonderful publication, it has been the single best advertising I have ever done in my 25 years in business. Effective, cost efficient, and a return on advertising investment, everything a business woman could ask for.” - Carmella Gibellino-Schultz, Permanent Cosmetics

I have been in practice for over 22 years and always relied upon my patients and colleagues to refer new “ patients. I am honored by the trust these individuals place in me by referring friends but in recent years I realize that this is not enough. I knew I needed an ethical and tasteful way to let my community know about my ethics, practice philosophy and training. I found such a vehicle with The Women’s Journal. I feel good about helping to inform the readers about important health issues while simultaneously allowing them to get to know us. Many wonderful patients have found us as a result of our Women’s Journal articles.” - Anna C. Giacalone, DMD, Artist in Cosmetic Dentistry

“Honestly, I was reluctant to do yet another print ad for my business. I had not seen results in past advertising attempts and it was hard to make another such investment. But something told me that The Women’s Journal would be different. Is it ever! I saw immediate, direct results in my business! The Women’s Journal reaches my target audience and because it is so informative to perspective clients, they follow through and I get the sale. I have the bottom line to prove it! Thank you so much.” - Melisa Ferriola, CPCP, Lasting Looks
