The Importance Of Preventive Eye Care
By Jeffrey B. Minkovitz, M.D.
O
f all the human senses, vision is often named as the most important and precious – that which would be missed most if lost. According to the CDC, approximately 11 million Americans over the age of 12 could improve their vision through proper refractive correction, and over 3 million (3%) over 40 are either legally blind or have low vision. People often seek eye care if their eyes are red or painful, or if vision becomes blurry. But routine eye examinations are important even if eyes and vision are fine – because many blinding eye diseases have few or no warning signs until vision loss is severe and possibly irreversible. The most common cause of
blindness in the United States is diabetic eye disease. In the early stages, when most easily treated, diabetic eye disease has no symptoms. Diabetics should have a comprehensive, dilated eye examination at least once a year to prevent serious complications. Maintaining good blood sugar control is also important to the health of the eyes. The second most common cause of blindness in the US is glaucoma. Vision loss from glaucoma often goes undetected until the disease is advanced, and once vision is lost, it can never be regained. Also, progression of more advanced glaucoma is more difficult to arrest. Glaucoma is more common in older adults, but it can occur even in the young. Regular examinations include screening to detect glaucoma. The most common cause of blindness among Americans over age 50 is age-related macular degeneration. While early macular degeneration has no cure, early detection, vitamins and a healthy diet can help to avoid progression. In cases which do progress, prompt intervention can improve outcomes. Worldwide, cataracts are by far the most common cause of blindness. Fortunately, this condition is reversible, and treatment is widely available in
developed countries. Technical advances have made surgery more successful than ever before. The American Academy of Ophthalmology has revised its recommendations for routine eye examinations, stating children should have routine screening and vision testing during regular pediatric visits, with referral to a specialist in the event of a finding or a family history or other risk factor. Young adults should have a baseline evaluation, and then periodic routine visits. “The frequency of ocular examinations should depend on the individual’s age, race, past ocular history, medical history, family history of eye disease, and the types of symptoms or ocular findings encountered.” Your eye care professional should recommend an appropriate interval. In addition to periodic screening examinations, prevention is important for maintaining good ocular health. Always wear eye protection when working with power tools or dangerous chemicals, or when playing sports posing a risk of eye injury. Fireworks and paintball injuries are also common causes of vision loss. Ultraviolet protection (glasses or sunglasses) can help to prevent cataracts, macular degeneration and ocular tumors. A diet healthy in fish and green vegetables can reduce the risk of macular degeneration. Finally, good blood pressure and blood sugar control, and smoking cessation helps avoid eye disease in addition to other health benefits.
While great advances have been made in ophthalmic treatments including cataract surgery and macular degeneration therapy, prevention and early detection can help to ensure the best possible vision for a lifetime.
Jeffrey Minkovitz, MD is an ophthalmologist with Eye Physicians and Surgeons in Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Minkovitz specializes in cataract and refractive surgery, and is one of only a few Delaware surgeons specially trained in corneal transplantation. He completed a cornea and refractive surgery fellowship at the renowned Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins. Previously, he graduated magna cum-laude from Harvard, earned his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts, completed internship at Harvard’s Mt. Auburn Hospital, and served his ophthalmology residency at Washington University. Dr. Minkovitz participated in the early research on Excimer Laser refractive surgery, and has offered this procedure to Delawareans since FDA approval in 1996, before Delaware had its own laser. These early pioneering individuals travelled to Wilmer Institute with Dr. Minkovitz, where he maintained his teaching and clinical appointment. In addition to introducing laser vision correction to Delaware, he also introduced NearVision CK to eliminate reading glasses, DSAEK (a newer, less invasive type of corneal transplant) and most recently the newest advance: laser cataract surgery. Dr. Minkovitz is a co-founder of the Center for Advanced Surgical Arts and serves on its medical advisory board. He is also on active staff at Christiana Care. While on staff of Wilmer at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Minkovitz received the Outstanding Teacher award. He was also named Top Doc in ophthalmology by Delaware Today Magazine six consecutive years, and has been an invited instructor at American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meetings.

CK® Testimonial... It finally occurred to me what has been missing during the last 2 days. Since Richard’s surgery, he isn’t complaining about his inability to read something on the fly without searching for his glasses. He wired 6 recessed lights (NO GLASSES), he read the Sunday paper sections A & B and menus (NO GLASSES), and is using the computer (NO GLASSES). I suppose for Richard, needing to look for glasses when he wanted to see something, has been the hardest adjustment of becoming older. His dependence was so gradual that I never related to why he would get so angry over needing them. My house has been quieter. I now have 2 less things to do everyday: find the glasses and make sure they were clean! 2

Dear Readers
As I am trying to get the paper ready to go to press I am looking out my back French doors at my beautiful garden and pool, wishing I could go outside and play. It is supposed to reach over 90° today, and I am not sure that it hasn’t already reached that temperature. But, I will not complain, because after the winter and spring that we just had I feel very fortunate to be enjoying this beautiful summer season finally. I hope that each of you are out enjoying your summer as well with plenty of family time.

Enjoy your family wherever and whenever you can because you never know when one of those family members won’t be around. Take me for example, in the last year I have lost several of my close family members. This alone is a very stressful and sad time, but one item that came up in two of their deaths was that they did not have a Will, nor had they made funeral arrangements for their burial. Though they both could certainly have afforded to pay for a funeral, once they died their family’s hands were tied, because nothing from the estate could be touched to pay for the burial. Both had loans that were attached to their other properties, thus my sister-in-law was forced to sell investment property, so that she did not lose everything she had. The other was my daughters’ father he had no Living Will, no Will, and no money. My girls not only lost their father, but they also had great pain in trying to deal with the huge decision of whether or not to put their father on life support. We all knew his wishes, but he had not taken the time to do a Living Will and put those wishes on paper. Even if you have nothing to leave for your family, it is important to put in writing what you want should you become ill or die suddenly and put it in the hands of someone you trust, or at least file it with the courts so that it can be found. Don’t wait until it is too late, and your family has to suffer even more because they have to make the decisions about your remains or other important health decisions that each of us should make long before the end of our time. Even if you go on-line and download a form… please do yourself and your family a favor and do something before it’s too late! Now on a brighter note, thanks to all our wonderful contributors for your support of the County Women’s Journal and also thank you to our faithful readership. The County Women’s Journal is available in medical buildings, hospitals, doctors’ offices, recreation centers, libraries, bookstores, coffee shops, hair salons, supermarkets, and many other local businesses. Donna Duffy is a dynamic entrepreneur and visionary who co-owns 3E Marketing Solutions whose talent for creative inspiration empowers, motivates and educates others. Donna’s mission is to educate, equip & engage small business owners and organizations with affordable marketing strategies and solutions through workshops, coaching/consulting, implementation and events. She embraces grassroots methodology, getting down in the trenches to meet business owners where they are and gains her greatest pleasure from the development of others.
In this day of social media platforms and engagement, one might ask how it all actually leads to a sale. Here are a few thoughts regarding sales and social media that I have found helpful.
1. You must be
present to win. It’s important to be found in today’s social media world; I see it as the equivalent of yesterday’s web address. Can your prospects and clients readily find you on at least one social media platform?
in real time and connecting with people. So find out where most of your potential clients are likely to spend their time and make sure that you show up there.
4. Share knowledge and tips, insights
and valuable information but also be real and relatable. Look back over your posts and check the numbers. You’ll find that some of your greatest response came from your greatest authenticity and accessibility. So make it a point to mix it up. Share relevant information as well as inspiration, wisdom and humor. People will not only be encouraged but may likely pass your post along by sharing it with others and that helps your posts go viral.
5. Golden Rule. Like, comment, and share
if you want others to like, comment and share. It’s not enough to watch from the sidelines and then wonder why no one likes, comments or shares. Do for them and their businesses what you want them to do for you and yours.
6

TESTIMONIALS
“Donna has been instrumental in helping our businesses. She has presented workshops to our businesses to help them grow and to give them a little bit of a nudge to get more engaged in their marketing. It’s hard as a small business to put things together and to find the time to do the things to promote themselves and the great work they are doing. She has helped to set them on the right path and given them the tools to take manageable bite size pieces out of marketing. I come here (events) to get the same things to help promote what we do for the businesses, so she helps me in my soul to do that as well as working with our businesses. It’s been a great partnership so far and we look forward to more to come.”
Aimee Lala Mulligan Cornerstone West/Westside Grows Together “I’m a big fan and advocate of 3E Marketing. They are a great team of talented individuals that will definitely help you get your company to the next level. Their seminars and workshops are so incredibly informative and also make for a great networking, a great group of people when you come out. I would definitely recommend that you speak with 3E Marketing regarding your social media needs and your marketing needs and I am very confident you’ll be very satisfied.”
Ken Evans Delaware State Chamber of Commerce “3E Marketing Solutions is helping us with events marketing and registration and marketing in general. To just know that I don’t have to worry about that on a day to day basis, that I don’t have to be on top of what needs to be done next. All I’m getting is an email to approve copy and it’s wonderful it’s huge, because now I am able to focus on getting my organization to the next level rather than being stuck in the dregs of the day to day work.”
Rebecca Faber World Trade Center-Delaware “When working with 3E Marketing, what I found is there are things that I just don’t have to worry about. I was away in Arizona in June and there was an event that needed to be handled and I loved that I could go on vacation and simply be in contact with the team and they could handle those things. I knew I had made one of the best (business) choices when something was happening and I didn’t have to take care of it!”

She then moved to Chicago, Illinois, to pursue her studies in dentistry, receiving her DDS degree from Northwestern University in 1979. After graduation Dr. Mazoch worked for several years in a clinic in Cincinnati. She and her husband then moved to Vermont, where she established her practice in the state capital of Montpelier. While there Dr. Mazoch was actively involved in her local dental society and was on the continuing education committee of the Vermont State Dental Society. She was also the recipient of the Young Career Woman of the Year award sponsored by the Central Vermont Business and Professional Women organization. In pursuit of better opportunities for her children and her husband, Dr. Mazoch and family relocated to the greater Delaware area, residing in Kennett Square and purchasing the dental practice of Dr. David Annand in 2001. She has been growing, modernizing, remodeling, and improving the practice ever since. She belongs to two local study clubs and the Delaware State Dental Society. Continuing dental education and sponsoring various charitable organizations are of extreme importance to her.
Dr. Mazoch’s main area of interest is, and always has been, her relationships with her patients. Patients always come first. Every procedure, recommendation, new equipment, staff hire and continuing education course is determined by whether or not it is in her patients’ best interest. She and her team try to make their patients’ visits as enjoyable as possible by striving to be on time, providing fresh free beverages, listening to and acting upon new ideas taken from surveys, furnishing music and ear buds to drown out noise, providing blankets for cold patients and fans for hot patients, trying to allay concern. Dr. Mazoch loves to work in her flower garden, practice yoga, walk for exercise and paint (oils are her medium). She enjoys spending time with her two grown children, (Alex , an attorney, and Stacey, in the fashion business), as well as traveling with her husband, Edward Blanchard, and taking long weekends in Annapolis, Maryland.
Dr. Melissa P. Broyles
Dr. Melissa P. Broyles has been a first-rate doctor for over 16 years. In 1993, she graduated from the Catholic University of America on the Dean’s List with a B.S. in Biology. Dr. Broyles believes that “drugs are not the answer to every illness and complex problems require complex solutions - including mind, body and spirit approaches to wellness.” Dr. Broyles has chosen a career in Integrative Medicine because she wants to be able to spend more time with patients and “get to the root of the problem.”
Dr. Broyles has a wide range of experience in different areas of the medical field. She is currently a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association, the Bioidentical Hormone Society, and a Fellow in Integrative Medicine. Beverly Stewart, M.Ed .
As a teacher, Beverly had a vision of reaching every student. Six years of experience in a traditional classroom had shown her that this was not always the most effective method of instruction; many students need a different approach in order to be successful. So, in 1985 she established Back to Basics Tutoring Service. Beverly began her business shortly after receiving her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Delaware. As the company’s sole employee, she literally started what would become a regionally-known and respected educational landmark at the kitchen table of her one-bedroom apartment! Now, 29 years later, that unwavering dedication to excellence in education has been rewarded. Back to Basics Learning Dynamics has served the varied educational needs of over 13,500 children and adults, and employs over 90 professionals. Back to Basics has also expanded its services dramatically to include state and district contracts in translating and interpreting in 16 languages, being certified as a private business and trade school for students over age 16, and tutoring over 60 subjects in a 1-on-1 setting. In fact, the ability to adapt to an ever-changing landscape in education has become the hallmark of the company.
In addition to Back to Basics Learning Dynamics, Beverly is also the Director of Back to Basics K-12 Private School. This is Delaware’s only Department of Education-approved 1-on-1 Private School, providing a full curriculum of math, English, history, and science, plus extensive electives for students in grades K- 12th. In addition, Back to Basics Private School is certified by the Federal Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), a prestigious distinction, to accept international students directly into their high school. Beverly’s vision has not gone unnoticed. Back to Basics has been recognized with numerous honors and awards including Entrepreneurial Woman of the Year Award, Delaware Small Business Administration “Small Businessperson of the Year,” Hall of Fame of Delaware Women, The Delaware SBA Entrepreneurial Success Award, and Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics.
Dr. Kiijuana Cann
Dr. Kiijuana Cann received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communicative Science and Disorder from Hampton University (Hampton, Virginia), and her Masters of Arts in Audiology from The Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio). She received her Audiology Doctoral (AuD) from the University of Arizona School of Health Sciences (Mesa, Arizona). Dr. Cann has been helping people in Delaware with hearing healthcare needs learn about their ears and hearing for 20 years. She believes that the people she helps hear better are on a journey to better hearing. “It’s important for people in need of hearing healthcare to understand the value - and the need - for the services that we provide after we fit them with hearing aids. For example, when I first fit someone with hearing aids, it really is an awesome experience. To reconnect them with their loved ones and help them envision places or situations they will now go back to is rewarding to be a part of. What’s even better though is each time that person returns for a simple cleaning or just to pick up batteries, they express the difference I’ve made in their life - that always reminds me of why I chose to become an audiologist.” Recently, Dr. Cann and Hearing Services of Delaware started a community awareness and wellness campaign called Help Someone Hear Better. The program is simple in design and is defined by its title. “We are encouraging the people we have helped hear better to help someone (they know) hear better. It could be a spouse, a mother, a father, a sibling, a close friend, a co-worker, someone that you attend social or religious functions with. The people we have helped hear better have a personal success story about addressing their hearing loss, and that makes them uniquely qualified to help people they know who might need to address their own hearing loss.” The program has only been in place for about 6 months and Dr. Cann says they have seen a very positive response from it.

Dr. Paula Ko
Paula Ko, MD is a retina specialist (an Ophthalmologist specializing in diseases of the retina) in Delaware with Offices in Wilmington and Dover, Delaware. As a retina specialist she treats many patients with diabetes, agerelated macular degeneration, retinal tears and detachments, and macular holes and puckers. In her practice she uses intra-ocular injections, laser, and surgery in the operating room to successfully treat many of these diseases. In addition she believes a healthy lifestyle and proper diet is very important in treating eye disease. She works very closely with a patient’s medical doctor to help make sure her patients have the best chance of maintaining good vision. She recommends strict control of BP and cholesterol in many eye diseases, a healthy diet full of antioxidants as well as daily exercise. Dr. Ko is very excited about many new treatments in retinal diseases that are very successful in stabilizing vision and returning vision in some instances. She is very busy treating patients with intra-ocular injections on a monthly basis for things like wet AMD, diabetes, and vein occlusions. These injections help prevent blindness and improve vision. New drugs that treat retinal diseases seemed to be developed every year. In addition, there have been many advances in retinal surgery including small incision surgery and highly computerized vitrectomy, both which she does.
Dr. Ko has a degree in Computer and Information Science from the Ohio State University College of Engineering. She graduated Cum Laude and worked in industry before going to medical school. She enjoys the deductive reasoning used in diagnosing a patient’s disease, creating a treatment plan for the patient, and explaining what and why things will be done to the patient. She enjoys the relationship she develops with each patient. There is a true art and science to medicine and Dr. Ko enjoys both. She also enjoys lecturing to other eye doctors and to patient groups about retinal disease. She is actively involved in training Ophthalmology Residents from Temple University Hospital. Dr. Ko has been a partner at Eye Physicians and Surgeons for the last 20 years.
Susan Polikoff
Susan’s career is reflective of her commitment to the health and wellbeing of our community. Since 2001 she has locally, and across the Delmarva Peninsula, implemented education and awareness programs, educated corporate and community citizens, and facilitated signature fund raising events. Working collaboratively with community leaders, corporate executives, volunteers, countless businesses, and local organizations, she has raised in excess of $10 million. Ms. Polikoff earned her Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership from Wilmington University, and is also a University of Delaware alumnus. She is an active member of the Rotary Club of Wilmington and a volunteer for the Delaware Symphony Orchestra. She lives in Newark with her husband Jim, and their twin felines. Susan chose to embark on her professional journey with the American Diabetes Association in 2013. The prevalence of the disease and the astounding rate of growth coupled with limited awareness and underfunded research was the challenge she needed to join the organization and facilitate the growth of the Delaware office that will meet the needs of our community.
Diabetes is a serious and costly epidemic that poses a major public health problem. The American Diabetes Association believes that if we are to truly make an impact against this devastating disease we must engage our communities on every level, in every facet of our mission. What we are doing in, and for, Delaware is important. The role of the American Diabetes Association has never been more relevant to the health and wellbeing of Delaware’s residents, and the nation. One of our new initiatives this year, as a result of collaborating with funders and community partners, is culture based programming. Our Live Empowered and Por tu Familia programs provide education, awareness, and screening for Delaware’s African American and Latino communities. Our Stop Diabetes at Work initiative offers employers a program to implement as part of their workplace wellness strategy. Our Family Weekend provides an opportunity for families who have children with diabetes the opportunity to learn from medical experts, interact with other families managing diabetes, and make connections that can last a life time. During National Diabetes month in November, we facilitate our Corporate Leadership Summit. This meeting provides information to our leaders, in every facet of business, government, and the community, concerning the state of diabetes in Delaware. Our programs are offered at no cost to participants. We welcome everyone to learn more.

A Happy Solution For Retained Baby Teeth
By Anna Marie Mazoch, D.D.S.
K
ira is a 15 year old who didn’t like smiling. She had several baby teeth which did not fall out; there were no permanent teeth to replace the baby teeth. Occasionally, one or a few permanent teeth just don’t develop, so there is nothing to shrink the baby teeth roots and push the baby teeth out of the mouth. Also, Kira’s upper permanent teeth were small and misshapen. So a broad smile was becoming an embarrassment for her. Kira’s orthodontist, Dr. Ali Husain, placed her teeth in their ideal positions. Because her upper teeth are small, and her baby teeth are tiny, we decided to place composite resin bonding on all the teeth requiring new shapes and more pleasing appearances. This type of bonding is called a Chairside Resin Veneer as opposed to a Laboratory Manufactured Porcelain Veneer. It is formed freehand by the dentist whereas porcelain veneers are formed, after taking impressions, in a dental laboratory. Chairside veneers can be made when there are no large cavities or fillings in the teeth, when the patient is too young for porcelain veneers, when finances are a major issue and/ or when we want a reversible procedure. Chairside veneers are a difficult and demanding procedure, so a skilled and experienced clinician
is essential. Despite the difficulty involved, they are usually half the cost of a porcelain veneer since there is no laboratory involvement and expense. Here is the x-ray of Kira’s lower front teeth. Notice how small and how short the roots of the two front baby teeth are. You can see that there are no permanent teeth below the baby teeth. Obviously, the roots of these teeth are not long enough for her to keep these teeth forever. Eventually, the baby teeth will either get loose or have to be removed. Implants can then take the place of the missing teeth. Because of Kira’s young age, her bone is still growing and changing. Implants need stable bone, so they are not a good choice at this time. This photograph demonstrates the need for accurate planning, measurements and deliberation before the patient has any treatment started.
Here is Kira on the day that she had her braces removed. We had to immediately place her
bondings so that a retainer could be fabricated as soon as possible, preventing regression and relapse of the bite. It is obvious that we had to coax her to give us a big smile for the photograph. The teeth receiving the composite resin bondings were her upper front six teeth, the retained baby tooth on her upper left back baby tooth, and on the two lower baby teeth. Because the lower front baby teeth are so small, we needed to bond the two teeth together to obtain maximum retention. We also left her bite very light on these teeth in order to avoid excessive bite forces. I hope you can see how much more confident Kira appears in her final photographs. She is such a lovely young lady; we are so happy that she can now smile freely and openly. Kira’s mother says: “Once Kira got her new smile, she hasn’t STOPPED smiling. She had a full week with getting her braces off one day, followed by two long appointments getting her veneers and then another day getting fitted for the

They are the big grins she did when she was a little kid. We are so happy with the work that Dr. Husain and Dr. Mazoch have done, and the changes it has made in Kira!” And Kira feels that: “I am definitely smiling a lot more and have a lot more confidence!” If you think that you or a friend or family member would benefit from this type of procedure, please give us a call to arrange an appointment. Dr. Anna Marie Mazoch received her B.S. degree in Biology, summa cum laude, from Ohio University and her D.D.S. from Northwestern University. She is a member of the American Dental Association, the Delaware State Dental Society and several local dental study clubs. She has been practicing general dentistry for 32 years, first in Cincinnati, then Montpelier, Vermont, and the past 13 years in Delaware. Her keen interest in continuing education for herself and her staff stems from a quote by G. V. Black, the first dean of Northwestern University Dental School and the father of modern dentistry: “The professional (wo)man has no right to be other than a continuous student”.
Maribeth joined the team in the latter part of 2013 and loves working with Dr. Mazoch and her new extended dental family. Maribeth comes from a medical insurance and billing background. Her goal is to make patient’s dental insurance easy to understand and make sure our patients maximize their benefits. She is usually our patients’ first contact with our office and makes them feel right at home. Maribeth greets patients, schedules appointments, and verifies insurance. Helping Delaware Hear Better O
lder Americans get their eyes checked, un dergo an annual physical, and even get their vehicle regularly inspected. According to Dr. Kiijuana Cann, (CoOwner/ Audiologist) at Hearing Services of Delaware, most By Dr. Kiijuana Cann older Americans do not have their hearing health examined annually, and in a lot of cases, many people that she meets with have not had their hearing tested in years. “Many people think they can put off taking care of a hearing problem,” she said. “But what we’re learning now is that hearing loss can have a much more significant impact on health than we ever realized, including increasing the risk of dementia and depression.”
Tiny
Just like with any medical condition, identifying a hearing issue early can help. That’s why Hearing Services of Delaware recommends that people begin to regularly get their hearing tested starting around age 55. “People think they can live with hearing loss,” Cann said. “But we don’t decide we can live with vision loss, so why do we think we can live without being able to hear?” A recent study by researchers from Johns Hopkins found that people experiencing hearing loss had a much higher risk for developing dementia. They believed that wearing a hearing device could keep dementia at bay. People with hearing loss begin to isolate from the rest of the world because they can’t understand people. The isolation and being unable to do things they’ve always enjoyed often ends up causing depression. Because Hearing Services of Delaware is privately owned, the audiologists have the ability to work with all of the hearing aid manufacturers. This provides the audiologists with the ability to find the best and most affordable solution for

each person’s unique needs. “The hearing aids that people remember their dad or grandfather wearing are no more,” said Dr. Kiijuana Cann. “Today’s devices are smaller, sleeker, and offer the most natural hearing and ease of use in today’s everyday environments. There have been continuous improvements in the ability to hear in all sorts of situations – like in crowded rooms with lots of background noise, quieter oneonone situations and even in windy conditions.” As an independent hearing healthcare practice, the bottom line for Hearing Services of Delaware is making sure people improve the quality of their life through better hearing. Dr. Cann is proud that many patients come from wordofmouth referrals from physicians, friends, and family members. “Our patients appreciate the value of the service we provide,” she said. “Our goal is to help people hear better – and we do that by establishing a longterm relationship, not by just selling hearing aids.”

Laser Periodontal Therapy!

T
here is a Laser way to treat severe gum disease without cutting or stitches. Since 2010 Dr Bradford Klassman, owner and operator of Delaware Periodontics, has been using the LANAP Protocol to treat patients with severe Periodontitis. “As a Board Certified Periodontist, I am always striving to provide my patients with treatment options that will be safe, effective, and minimally invasive, in order to help them get back to their lives faster. I can now treat patients in my office with highly effective, well established and scientifically proven procedures. By reducing post-operative pain, number of sessions required, and the recovery time, LANAP eliminates many of the reasons that so many patients hesitate to seek treatment for periodontal disease and helps me ensure that my patients get the best possible dental care.” Gum Disease is one of the most common medical infections in the United States. 50% of the population has it but less than 3% get treatment In the initial stages of the disease, gums can be red, swollen and bleed easily. Some patients have no symptoms at all. As disease worsens, gums and bone that support the teeth become seriously damaged and the teeth become loose, fall out, or have to be removed. Recent evidence also shows a major link of untreated gum disease to many medical conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and pre-term and low birth weight babies. Previous treatments for Periodontal disease required multiple visits of specialized cleanings called scalings to control inflammation and then surgeries to peel back the gums to get access

to finish cleaning, reshape bone, place bone grafts and then suture the tissue back in place. Although historically effective, this type of treatment is lengthy and in some patients produces significant discomfort. LANAP is less painful and less invasive. This Patent and FDA approved procedure is performed under local anesthesia. A tiny laser fiber (about the thickness of 3 human hairs) is inserted between the tooth and the gum. The laser selectively removes the diseased tissue without cutting away healthy tissue. The tooth roots are then cleaned of all plaque and tartar. The laser is then used to create a stable and firmProof fibrin ❑ 1st blood clot to seal the opening. Forgetfulness Or Dementia? The Experts At The Swank Memory Care Center Can Help By David Simpson, M.D.
H
ow do you know if you or someone you love is simply a bit forgetful or experiencing a serious memory problem? A normal memory lapse is forgetting where you left your keys. Serious memory loss is when you forget what a key is. Other warning signs might be wandering or getting lost, forgetting to turn off the stove or having difficulty driving. When memory loss and declining ability to reason are serious enough to interfere with daily life, it is called dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. Dementia can occur in people as young as 50, although it is very rare. As people age, their likelihood of developing memory disorders increases. About 5 percent of people at age 65 have some sort of dementia, with the risk of dementia rising steadily after that. By the time an individual turns 80, he or she has about a 50 percent risk of developing severe memory problems. Dementia robs people of the ability to function independently. www.TheWomensJournal.com

“The Summer Blood Challenge is a friendly, competition among employers and community organizations,” said Roy Roper, Blood Bank of Delmarva President & CEO. “The summer months are typically slower for blood donations and the competitive spirit and prizes help motivate existing donors as well as attract first-time donors.”
Last year, a record 241 companies participated in the Summer Blood Challenge. This resulted in 14,308 blood donations. “We had another recordbreaking year last year,” Roper said. “We anticipate tremendous support from our dedicated donors who help save local lives and have been vital to
ensuring a stable blood supply in our community for 60 years. We are grateful to everyone who takes the time to give of themselves.” Blood Bank of Delmarva is a non-profit community service organization that provides blood and blood products to 16 hospitals in the Delmarva region. More than 83,000 blood donations were needed last year for about 20,000 patients across the Delmarva Peninsula.

You’ve Got Gall
Gallstones more common in women and may require surgical removal
80 percent of all gallstones and consists mostly of undissolved cholesterol. Because most gallstones result from high levels of cholesterol, diet plays a very important role in the prevention of gallstone development.
By Susan Sees, MD
E
ach year, approximately 800,000 people. are admitted to the hospital for complications with their gallbladders – most often because of gallstones. They occur more commonly in women, and more frequently in those who have been exposed to higher amounts of estrogen during their lifetime through birth-control pills, hormone therapy, or pregnancy. The gallbladder is a small pearshaped organ located just below the liver. It plays an important role in food digestion by storing bile produced by the liver and providing it to the small intestine where it breaks down fat. The gallbladder generally goes unnoticed unless a patient experiences symptoms of a disorder, such as gallstones. Gallstones are like grains of sand or small rocks that develop in the gallbladder as a result of bile becoming chemically unbalanced. Only about 60 percent of people with gallstones experience symptoms, as they can develop and pass through the gallbladder and intestines without causing symptoms. However, when a gallstone is large it may become caught in the passageways, or ducts, of the gallbladder, pancreas or liver, resulting in extreme pain. Gallstones generally fall into one of two categories, depending on the cause. Pigment gallstones develop when bile contains too much bilirubin, a naturally-occurring chemical normally removed by the liver. Pigment gallstones generally develop in individuals with liver conditions such as cirrhosis or sickle cell anemia. Another type, cholesterol gallstones, comprises
www.TheWomensJournal.com
Diets high in fats and cholesterol are a main contributor to gallstone development. However, cholesterol levels in your bile do not always correspond to cholesterol levels in your blood, especially since cholesterol-lowering drugs do not prevent gallstones even though they lower blood cholesterol levels. Crash diets that include too little fat, skipping meals, too few calories, rapid weight loss or going long periods without eating prohibit the gallbladder from emptying often enough or completely, increasing the risk of gallstone development. In addition to diet, other risk factors for developing gallstones include gender, body weight, age and ethnicity. Women are more likely to develop gallstones because estrogen causes more cholesterol to be excreted in bile. Women who have high levels of estrogen in their bodies, such as those who are pregnant, taking birth control pills or on hormone therapy, are especially at risk. Overweight individuals may also have higher levels of cholesterol excreted into their bile. Individuals older than 60 years of age and those of Native American and Mexican-American descent are also high-risk groups.
patient basis using the laparoscopic method, allowing most patients to return to normal activities within days. A person with a healthy liver can function normally without a gallbladder, however, lifestyle modifications such as limiting fat intake and increasing dietary fiber may be necessary for normal digestive function. Although surgery is the most common treatment for large gallstones and blocked ducts, non-surgical options to dissolve or break up the stones may be appropriate for individuals unable to undergo surgery due to complications such as cardiovascular conditions or liver disease. If you experience signs or symptoms associated with gallstones or fall into a high-risk group, contact your physician to discuss treatment options and
ways to minimize your risk. It is important to seek medical care at the first sign of gallbladder attack or pain to avoid additional complications such as infections, duct obstructions or gallbladder rupture. Susan Sees, MD is the most recent addition to Surgical Associates of Chester County (SACC), and is in practice with Nenito Uy, MD, FICS and Christopher Olukoga, MD, FACS. If gallstones develop and cause symptoms, medical intervention is necessary in order to avoid permanent organ damage. Symptoms of gallstones often include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea especially after a high-fat or spicy meal, known as a “gallbladder attack.” Seek medical treatment immediately if you experience these symptoms especially if accompanied by dark urine, fever, chills and/or yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes, as this may indicate an obstructed bile duct, which can result in gallbladder rupture, a potentially fatal occurrence.

ven today, many health care providers do not fully appreciate the benefits of higher tech MRI studies. We love to answer doctors’ questions. For instance, we found a patient with marrow abnormalities on a lumbar MRI. In addition to being like a CT scan image, MRI shows vascular structures and bone marrow much better than CT scans. The abnormality we found was not seen on x-ray. The doctor asked if a bone scan would add any information. The answer was NO. We saved the patient $900 dollars because the doctor asked a question. Doing the bone scan would have given us no useful additional information. Dr. Chao has 30 years experience which can help you and your doctor save money. We love to save money. Our health care is inefficient, in part because not enough people and doctors ask questions about how to save money. We have been committed to providing the highest quality MRI technology since 2007 when MRI Consultants opened its doors with the First 3T MRI in the First State. A recent review article in Medscape, (http://www. medscape.org/ viewarticle/776272), completely turns everything we know about MR imaging upside down. We offer diffusion tensor imaging and want to do resting state fMRI exams. These exams are useful in patients with both Parkinson’s disease and autism. There are new techniques in imaging—3T MRI, MR spectroscopy, diffusion tensor imaging, DWI and perfusion imaging—all of which are better than the routine post-contrast MRI study for lesion margin evaluation. Our new office in Lewes has offered these techniques since 2011. We have the technology and Dr. Chao has 30 years experience, which was recognized by his peers. Delaware
Dr. Chao’s desire to provide the most advanced MRI imaging possible had led us to offer services other facilities do not. 32-channel head coil high resolution studies— performed at our 3T Lewes MRI site. We are the only facility in Delaware (and possibly the entire Delmarva Peninsula) with a 32channel head coil. The extra channels translate into better and faster brain imaging. The 32-channel coils themselves are extremely rare. Even in world capitals like Paris and NYC, only one or two facilities have such high resolution coils. MRA’s can be done at super high quality in only 4 minutes. Quantitative MRI can measure white and grey matter and CSF. Diffusion Tensor Imaging picks up subtle brain trauma, Alzheimer’s and even autism. Proton spectroscopy helps do a non-invasive biopsy (we do this for free) if the test might show a stroke or tumor. This is useful information which costs nothing if you come to us for your MRI study with contrast—we just add the 5 min scan for free. Prostate MRI which, at 3T does not require the insertion of an invasive probe/ coil. We do spectroscopic exams for no additional fee because Dr. Chao wants to help patients. Many facilities (if equipped to perform the test) charge up to 100 dollars for the same exam. 3T Breast MRI is 100% sensitive for breast cancer. We do a special lymph node detection sequence called DWIBS. This can change your diagnosis up to 30% of the time. It even adds lymph node detection without using IV contrast. We offer a super high quality abdomen study for $500 that is able to pick up smaller pancreatic cancers, smaller liver cancers and includes diffusion weighted imaging for free. This new technique is up to 96% sensitive for cancer. Ask us about our Outof-Pocket discount $700 for studies that use safe contrast. We understand that some patients suffer from claustrophobia. For those patients who know themselves to be
Elevated PSA level and routine scans showed no cancer in the peripheral zone. However, this proton spectroscopy showed cancer in the left aspect of the prostate. It is a super advanced non-invasive electronic biopsy.
extremely claustrophobic, we offer IV valium conscious sedation (we are the only providers that do this) for the modest fee of $50—provided they have someone to drive them home afterwards! Another development has been in the area of the contrasts used for MRI. While the contrasts used for MRI are very different from those used for CT scans, they are not all the same. Some have been linked to a very rare, but very serious, debilitating and incurable illness called Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (“NSF”). We have always been very careful to select contrasts that have NEVER been connected to NSF. The safer contrasts cost a little more, but you’re worth it! We use Multihance (at 1.5T), Prohance (at 3T) and Eovist (for patients with kidney problems). More information can be found at www.mriconsultants.net, www.bestopenmri.net and www. safecontrast.com. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call Dr. Chao at 302 295-3367 (33MR). We are here to help. Dr. Philip Chao graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University and was Scholar of the House. He continued his studies at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, receiving his medical degree in 1983. After a transitional internship year at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY, Dr. Chao did his residency in Radiology at Brooklyn’s SUNY Health Science Center (19841987), where he became Chief Resident. He stayed on to complete a fellowship in Neuroradiology (1987-1988). Dr. Chao has been interested in MRI technology since its very beginning – the first MRI

scan took place in 1981 while he was pursuing his medical studies. The University of Pennsylvania, where Dr. Chao was both a Body MRI Fellow (1988-1990) and a Neuroradiology Fellow (1989-1990), was at the heart of the development of this technology and Dr. Chao was able to work with pioneers in MRI on the first GE Signa 1.5T (tesla) scanner. His advanced research and specializations complete, Dr. Chao left the University of Pennsylvania for a position as Director of MRI in Wilmington, DE – a position he held for 14 years. Dr. Chao eventually left that position to create the best MRI Center in Delaware which uses the very latest technology: 3T MRI. While 3T (tesla) scanners have been used for scanning research patients since 2002, these advanced, more powerful MRI scanners only became available for clinical use in 2004. Dr. Chao worked hard to bring 3T technology to Delaware and in February 2007, MRI Consultants, LLC began operating the first 3T scanner in the State. 3T is the newest horizon for MRI.

Veins Can Be A Pain, Big Or Small I
often reflect back on my experience at First State Vein and Laser Center, thinking about what matters most to my patients. Obviously, patients that have “big” unsightly, bulging, winding painful veins are concerned about them. But I realize that it’s the “small” things that really matter to the majority of the patients. “Small” things like reducing downtime, lessening discomfort and the possibility of scarring - matter. To most, it is also the small veins that frequently matter. Even after ablation (closure) of an incompetent great saphenous vein, the source of their initial complaint, I am often asked what can be done about the remaining bulging vein, or about the small stubborn blue-purple spider veins. Obviously, we are concerned about life threatening D.V.T. (deep vein thrombosis) or leg ulcers. But for most patients, it is irrelevant; they don’t have them. Most are bothered by non-critical vein problems. As ‘vein doctors’ we should address the entire spectrum of vein problems, should not ignore patient’s strong wishes and treat what matters to them - the big and the small veins.
What is Venous Insufficiency?
Uni-directional valves are essential to insure the flow of blood from superficial to deep veins and from the legs to the heart. These valves are present in ALL veins, the tiniest and the largest alike. When these valves leak or become incompetent, the blood flows backwards, pools within the veins and weakens their walls. This condition, called venous insufficiency, may occur in veins of all sizes. In large ‘trunks’ like the great saphenous vein, this will result in what is commonly known as varicose veins, while in smaller (2-3 mm) veins under the skin (reticular veins) it will produce spider veins.
Spider Veins - Often Part of a Bigger Problem As mentioned above, leaky valves in reticular veins result in spider veins. These can be isolated phenomena. But spider veins can also be a manifestation of a deeper, larger vein’s insufficiency that over the years has gradually affected more superficial veins and eventually, reaches the reticular veins. A patient who comes in for the treatment of spider veins, should be first assessed to determine whether these are an
www.TheWomensJournal.com
isolated issue, or part of a broader and deeper, problem.
Isolated Spider Veins Can Be Treated By:
Sclerotherapy – closure of the veins by injection of a chemical solution called sclerosant, ideal for spider veins 0.8 - 1.2mm in width. Ohmic Thermolysis - works by a heat generated by radiofrequency device called “Vein Gogh”, best for spider veins smaller than 0.8mm in width. L.H.E. Therapy – combined Light and Heat Energy Technology – effective for very tiny veins. When spider veins are a manifestation of an underlying large veins venous insufficiency, which can happen even without the presence of large varicose veins, the underlying problem should be addressed first.
Underlying Venous Insufficiency Can Be Treated By: Foam Sclerotherapy - the injection of a sclerosant mixed with CO2 to close reticular veins.
Phlebectomy - a delicate surgical removal of small or large bulging veins. Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy - a closure by sclerosant of deep incompetent perforating veins, under ultrasound guidance. Endo venous laser ablation laser closure of large incompetent veins. At First State Vein and Laser Center we offer all these modalities, alone or in combination, in order to reach the most desirable longlasting results. Our success is measured by the ability to understand, diagnose and explain to our patients what their particular underlying venous problems are and how we plan to solve them. We are committed to address the entire spectrum of their problems, the small, as well as the big issues.
Testimonial
I vacillated for years with the idea of having a procedure done, to eliminate my spider and varicose veins. I had been to a few dermatologists but, just never felt comfortable enough to move forward. Then my sisterin-law told me about First State Vein and Laser MediSpa. She had been to Dr. Shapira and her great results and told me to call. I did just that; and from my very first appointment, I knew Dr. Shapira could help me. He took the time to determine the cause of my issues and then to explain exactly what needed to be done. He assured me he could help my legs look and feel better and he did! I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Shapira and his staff; they are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. This was the first summer in years that I was actually comfortable wearing shorts and dresses. - Nadine L., Newark, Delaware

How is it Done?
Through a tiny incision, the size of the tip of a pen, a cannula is inserted under the skin. Through the cannula, we first deliver local anesthesia. Next, a laser fiber is inserted to deliver energy directly to the fat cells causing them to rupture, and at the same time, cause the under surface of the skin to regenerate. The liquefied fat is then gently sucked out.

60 Magical Mommy Minutes
By Jessica D. Apel, D.O.
E
very new mom wants what is best for her baby.
The best food for your baby is mother’s milk. Breastfeeding is one of the best, most loving things you and your baby will share. Earlier this year, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) came out with a formal opinion for new parents, that exclusive breastfeeding is best for babies for the first six months of life, followed by cereal and table food with breast milk, if possible. Studies have found that babies who are breastfed are less likely to have diarrhea, ear infections and respiratory infections. Later in life, they have less risk of asthma, obesity and diabetes. Breastfeeding also is an incredibly rewarding experience. As a mom myself, I can tell you that breastfeeding helps to bring you and your baby even closer. Before you know it, nursing will be a natural part of your routine.
Some moms have difficulty getting the knack of breastfeeding, and Skin-to-Skin helps babies to breastfeed even better. Our nurses are trained in lactation to help you begin to breastfeed right in the delivery room and throughout your hospital stay. Christiana Hospital is one of only 88 hospitals in the U.S. participating in Best Fed Beginnings, a program designed to increase the number of hospitals who support moms that breastfeed by becoming a Baby Friendly, USA designated facility.
Nursing moms are often concerned that their babies aren’t getting enough milk. You can’t precisely measure the amount of milk that goes from a mother’s breast into a baby’s tummy but there are several ways you can make sure your baby is well fed.
Through the Baby Friendly Initiative, moms are learning many valuable facts that make breastfeeding easier, such as, using pillows to raise the baby to a comfortable level. You also will learn tips for encouraging your baby to “latch” appropriately to your breast. Don’t be discouraged if you were not successful in trying to breastfeed your baby. A lot of moms are, in fact, successful the second time around– or the third.
Help for nursing moms At feeding time, make certain your baby is alert. Adults can’t eat properly when they are sleepy -and neither can a baby. Undress your baby, down to the diaper, so you have a lot of skin contact. Rub your baby’s feet and talk softly. This stimulates your baby and also is a time for mother and child to feel really close.
First, check the diaper. If your baby is peeing and pooping, as indicated by your baby’s doctor, (you should receive a sheet indicating how many times each is expected, depending on the day of life), that means your little one is processing food. Many smart phones have easy to use breast feeding apps to help record the number of nursing sessions, the time between feedings, and diaper changes. The apps are especially helpful during the first few weeks until regular nursing is established. Your baby’s weight also will confirm that he or she is not going hungry. If your baby is gaining weight and continuing to grow, you shouldn’t worry. If you are concerned about your baby’s weight, call your baby’s doctor for a weight check. Even if you can’t be with your baby all the time, you can still provide milk. If you are separated from your baby for some reason, pumping milk can help with milk production. Many insurance companies pay for breast pumps, so be certain to check with your provider.
Nursing your baby is a natural followup to giving birth. That means starting to breastfeed within an hour of delivery.
www.TheWomensJournal.com
You can call the Breastfeeding Education and Resource Center at Christiana Hospital at 302733-3360 with any breastfeeding questions Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. There is a free support group for breastfeeding moms that meets every Monday in the Women’s Building, Room 1932, at Christiana Hospital, from 2-3 p.m. Talk with your obstetrician about any concerns you may have, before your baby is born. Your doctor can give you advice and encouragement. There also are a lot of good books you can read to help you prepare to breastfeed and get your baby off to a great start.

A day you’ll always remember. Expert care you’ll never forget.
‘Skin-to-skin’
A great way to begin is called “Skin-to-Skin,” in which your baby is placed on your chest immediately after birth. This keeps your baby warm and eases baby’s transition into the world, and it’s soothing for your baby after the excitement of being born. At Christiana Care Health System, we call it “60 Magical Mommy Minutes.” Your labor and delivery nurse will continue to evaluate your baby during the 60 minutes to ensure your baby is transitioning appropriately.
Breastfeeding can definitely have its challenges, many of them occur once discharged from the hospital. Ask your baby’s partner for assistance by getting you a drink of water, an extra pillow, or the remote control. Also make sure you have a support system set up for the bumps in the road like a sister or a girlfriend who has previously breastfed a baby.
Our moms rely on an experienced health care team that’s prepared for everything, 24 hours a day—every day. You can trust we provide a safe, welcoming experience for mom, baby and the entire family. Caring for moms, newborns and families for generations.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea In Children Let’s do something about it before it is too late! • E nlarged tonsils and adenoid tissues • Craniofacial abnormalities • Poor academic performance • Gasping for air • Unusual daytime behaviors • Darkness under the eyes
By Dr. Grace Liu and Dr. Lewis Yu
O
bstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) can be found in every segment of population, even in children. One distinction to be made is that OSA in adults can only be managed, not cured. However, OSA in children can be cured. Consequence of airway obstruction is reduced oxygen available for the body. Oxygen deprivation is especially critical for the rapidly growing body and brain. Approximately 3 to 12 percent of children do snore. One to ten percent of children go on to develop various forms of sleep breathing disorder. The mild form is called Upper Airway Resistance Symptom (UARS). UARS causes brain to arouse from sleep to correct the problem then falls back to sleep again. This cycle occurs many times during the sleep; therefore, it destroys quality of sleep. Here are some symptoms often associated with UARS: • Hypertension • Fatigue • Cognitive impairment • Unrefreshing sleep • Chronic pain (often misdiagnosed as Fibromyalgia in adults) Some children do go on to develop full OSA. In OSA, there are more physiological symptoms. Some of the symptoms in children include: • Failure to thrive • Bed wetting • Obesity
There are many other signs and symptoms associated with OSA. The list above is, by no means, a complete list. They are mentioned to illustrate how easy it is for the physicians to be misguided to wrong diagnosis. A child with OSA symptoms can be very easily misdiagnosed as other behavior disorders such as ADHD.
The most common cause of childhood OSA is enlarged tonsils and adenoid tissues. These are soft tissues that line the upper airway and the back of the mouth. Intuitively speaking, they simply “clog the pipe”. Surgically removing these enlarged tissues has proven effective in improving airway. Numerous studies have documented improvement in snoring, OSA, frequent urination, behavior and growth following adenotonsillectomy. Bony upper airway obstruction is the second category of causes. In this category, bony structures of the nasal/palatal physically impede airflow. Examples in this category are: deviated nasal septum, midface hypoplasia, high vault shape palate. Early intervention to correct these abnormalities, using orthodontics and surgery, would afford a child the chance of normal development; hence avoid living with airway obstruction when he or she is an adult. Diagnosis starts with
careful review of history. Unusual behavior problems are usually the first clue. Be sure to discuss with your physician and dentist about your child’s behavior pattern. If there is a definite sleep disorder pattern, the physician then can do a detailed examination of the airway. He would be looking for any soft or hard tissue blocking the airway. Should there be enough evidence from physical exam to support the OSA diagnosis, polysomnography (sleep test) is warranted to get the definitive diagnosis. Treatment options vary greatly depending on the cause and severity. For the most common cause of obstruction which is enlarged tonsils and adenoids, surgical removal is the first line of treatment.
When facial and palatal bone structure is the cause of constriction, orthodontic manipulation may be called for to expand the bony air passage. Childhood obesity is increasingly playing a bigger role in this disease. Healthy eating lifestyle is a prominent requirement in any treatment plan.
Early detection and treatment for childhood OSA allows a child to have normal development both physically and behaviorally/emotionally. Treatments at early stage of the growth curve tend to have greater and more permanent effects. This represents an opportunity to unlock a child’s growth potential.
Imagine how much better a happy, physically fit, socially well adjusted child will do in life, compared to a grumpy, often ill child? Your dentist is in a unique position to help in detect and treat airway issues. We see your children more often than your medical doctor. We get to know your kids intimately. This makes us great as the first line in detection. So, talk to your dentist about your child’s snoring. It may change his life. All About Smiles, PA. offers comprehensive general and cosmetic dental services, such as veneers, crowns, bridges, implants, whitening, as well as, Invisalign®. The practice also provides comprehensive neuromuscular(TMD) evaluations and treatment and smile makeovers.

Flashes And Floaters – Symptoms Of Possible Retinal Tear Or Detachment T
By Dr. Paula Ko
hink of the eye like a camera: it is a very small organ with many different parts to it. The eye has a lens that focuses the light on the retina. The retina is like the film of a camera – it lines the back wall of the eye similar to wallpaper. When a patient complains of flashes and floaters, as a retina specialist I am always concerned about problems with retinal tears and /or detachments. The retina can tear or detach and the initial symptoms may start as flashes and floaters. If the retina starts to detach, then a patient may notice a dark shadow or shade that descends over their vision. If left untreated, a patient will go blind. Floaters are a common symptom that many patients may experience. Typically floaters are dark, small, and float back and forth. Many times floaters get in the way of vision, but if the eye looks back and forth, the floater can float out of the way. Acute floaters can occasionally be harmless however more commonly acute floaters are a symptom of something more serious. If one has had floaters for many years and they have not gotten worse, then usually it is nothing to worry about. If one experiences floaters acutely, and they have not experienced them before. it usually signifies a problem. The only real way to tell the difference is to get a complete eye examination including dilation, allowing the entire retina to be checked. If a tear develops, many times it is in the periphery of the retina which can not be seen unless the pupil is dilated. If a patient complains of new floaters in one eye and the floaters do not go away s/he should be seen immediately. Flashes are not as common and are typically associated with floaters. Flashes that are caused by a retinal tear or detachment usually occur in the periphery of the vision (side vision) and are noted at night or in the dark, usually lasting for less than a second. They can occur frequently but the actual flash lasts for a very short period of time. Flashes can also be induced when one looks quickly from side to side. The most common cause of flashes and floaters is a posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). This occurs as a normal aging process. The process usually begins by age 50, and by age 70 more than 50% of people have had a PVD. The back inside cavity of the eye is filled with vitreous fluid. When you are born, the fluid is clear and gelatinous, like egg white before it is cooked. As one ages, the vitreous starts to liquefy. As it liquefies, the vitreous starts to contract and pull away from the retina. When it pulls away, the vitreous tugs on the retina and causes flashes – the retina is stimulated by the vitreous tugging on the retina. When a PVD occurs, patients will commonly notice flashes and floaters. It is usually during this 6-8 week period of the vitreous pulling away from the retina that a patient is at risk for retinal tears or detachments. Sometimes when the vitreous jelly is pulling loose, it will cause a tear or a retinal detachment. If a retinal tear goes untreated it commonly will lead to
www.TheWomensJournal.com
a retinal detachment. The initial symptoms of a PVD should be checked out immediately. A retinal tear is much easier to treat (requires laser in the office) than a retinal detachment (requires more involved surgery). Hence, catching a problem earlier and before vision loss is always better. While a PVD usually occurs spontaneously, it can also be caused by blunt trauma to the eye or a hard hit to the back of the head that causes secondary injury to the eye. In summary, acute flashes and floaters should always be checked out with a dilated eye exam immediately, usually within 1–2 days from when they start. The most common cause is a PVD, which causes very little damage, but a tear or retinal detachment may be the cause and immediate treatment may be needed. Role Of Age And Gender In The Early Recognition O Of Heart Attack Victims ptimal treatment for heart attack victims is based on early recognition and institution of therapy, particularly reperfusion. However, our ability to institute treatment rapidly is determined by how quickly we recognize the presence of the heart attack (myocardial infarction/ MI). Typically, chest pain is the initial symptom alerting us to the possibility of an MI. However, it is possible to suffer a heart attack without chest pain. It now appears age and gender impact the likelihood of this scenario. A study was published this month in the Journal of
the American Medical Association evaluating this phenomenon and its consequences. This registry study included over one million heart attack patients and evaluated for the presence or absence of chest pain. The results are striking. Over one-third (35.4%) of all MI patients presented without chest pain. However, the percentage was significantly higher for women than men (42% vs. 30%). (In addition, lack of chest pain was more likely in diabetics). The patients without chest pain were less likely to receive reperfusion therapy such as thrombolytics (clot busting medications)
or percutaneous intervention (balloon or stent). They also were less likely to receive appropriate medical therapy such as aspirin, beta blockers, etc. This delay translated into a significantly higher mortality rates for women compared to men (14.6% vs. 10.3%). The mortality difference was greatest in younger women (less than age 55) suggesting the absence of chest pain in young women with MI is an important predictor of survival. Interestingly, these differences tended to dissipate with increasing age. This variance may be explained by different

pathophysiology of younger vs. older women with heart attacks. It has been postulated that younger woman with an MI typically have less narrowing of the coronary arteries with concomitant hypercoagulability, inflammation, spasm or plaque erosion/rupture creating the event. This scenario is particularly more common in young female smokers. This study raises an important question in how to accurately diagnose a heart attack without the presence of chest pain, particularly in young females.
Recognition of atypical symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea, indigestion, diaphoresis (sweating), pain in other areas (back, neck, jaw, shoulder) is important. Smoking cessation is critical. Physician awareness of the possibility of heart attack in young women and the fact that it is quite common for them not to have chest pain will aid in earlier recognition and institution of therapy which, in turn, will lead to better outcomes. Ultimately, however, further research is needed to improve our understanding of the pathophysiology of these differences and provide the general public and physicians with the best information to allow them to seek early recognition and treatment. In the meantime, patients and physicians should remain vigilant in evaluation of all patients at risk, even with atypical symptoms, particularly the young female who is more likely to present in this fashion.

Implantable Device Is A Life Changer F
or many women, the uncontrollable urge to go to the bathroom controls their lives. These women with overactive bladder or urge urinary incontinence may carry around pads or an extra change of clothes. Some are afraid to plan social outings or even leave home for fear they might not make it to the bathroom in time. If you are one of these women, don’t give up hope, even if various medications or behavior changes haven’t solved the problem, an implantable device called an InterStim® sacral neuromodulator can relieve even the most difficult cases of overactive bladder and urge urinary incontinence. InterStim® has proven to be a life changer for many
For Women With Overactive Bladder
women, who can now take long trips or go out with friends without worrying about having an accident. Women also feel more rested because they don’t make a lot of trips to the bathroom each night.
Neuromodulation can also be used to treat urinary retention, a condition where the bladder does not empty. It is also very successful in treating fecal incontinence, the inability to control bowel movements.
A proven track record InterStim® sends tiny electronic signals to the sacral nerve that controls a person’s bladder, bowels and the surrounding muscles. The device improves communication between the bladder and bowel system and the brain.
The device has been approved as a treatment for overactive bladder since 1997. In 2011, InterStim® was approved for use in patients who have a fecal incontinence.
Typically, neuromodulation is recommended for patients for whom medications and behavior modification, such as changes in diet and bladder training, haven’t worked. A great feature of the device is that patients can take it for a test drive — a two-week tryout to see how the device works — without committing to an implant. If the device works for you during the test period, the stimulator can be implanted under the skin in a procedure that takes about an hour. There’s no general
anesthesia and no down time needed for recovery.
The device can be adjusted and turned on or off with a hand-held programmer. And once it’s implanted under the skin, it’s invisible—you can even wear your bathing suit worry-free! Overall, 70 percent of patients say they are cured or their condition is significantly improved with InterStim®. That is especially impressive when you consider that the patients who get the device have not responded to other treatments. Most patients can benefit from the treatment, no matter how young or old they are, how severe their symptoms are, or how many years they have been dealing with incontinence.
The device is covered by most health plans. At the Christiana Care Center for Urogynecology and Pelvic Surgery, we are highly experienced in implanting the InterStim® System.

How Spinal Misalignment May Be Affecting Your Golf Game By Dr. Katie Schuler D.C.
T
he spinal column is made of bones called vertebrae, which are composed of soft, cushioning disks that act as shock absorbers, and strong, heavy ligaments that add form and stability. Attached to the spine are many muscles that give strength and movement to the spine. The spine houses the spinal cord and spinal nerves that carry information to the entire body. The spine is a complex structure designed to move and is susceptible to dysfunction. When the spine becomes misaligned, it can affect function in a variety of ways. There are several key signs that your spine, or the supporting structures, may be out of alignment. Golf can be one of the most technically demanding sports to play. The slightest thing can change a golfer’s game, whether it’s equipment, course conditions or body mechanics. With the use of chiropractic care, those variables related to body mechanics can become more repetitive and predictable. Consistency and accuracy are the keys to a good golf game. Golfers and athletes from many other sports use chiropractic care to help improve their performance. Chiropractic care takes form with clinical care referred to as “adjustments” to the spine. These procedures are safe, effective and maximally benefit the golfer. Adjustments are for more than just back pain. They help your nervous system, maximize joint mechanics and improve your overall health. A solid golf swing starts with a strong foundation in your body. Your pelvis is where most of your power is created. Your lower body and pelvis create torque during the swing, while your upper body acts like a whip. Without that strong foundation on the bottom half and flexibility on the top, your swing will suffer. Your pelvis is the weight-bearing foundation of your trunk and spine. There is a Sacro-iliac (SI) joint on each side of the pelvis. Most people have what is called a “Subluxation” www.TheWomensJournal.com
of these joints – a “mis-alignment”. If one of the SI joints have microtears or weakness in the ligaments, the pelvis can not bear weight on that side. It is comparable to having a sprained ankle, but in the pelvis. This condition could be painless, but it may include pain in that joint, the lower back or hips. This injury creates a poor golf swing. If the SI joint is weak, the golfer will not be able to finish their backswing, and will not create enough torque in the body to generate power. The ball will either fade or slice and the distance of the shot will be reduced in an unhealthy individual. If the front side of your pelvis is unstable, this will also create a severe loss of power. Chiropractic care can re-align the pelvic bones and give those ligaments a chance to heal. A chiropractic adjustment can also re-align your lower back, improving the muscle action of your lower body. The combination of chiropractic treatment and core stability training should help you improve your game considerably.
You now have a strong foundation for your swing. The next thing you need is flexibility in the torso and shoulders to create that whip action. Nerve supply to your upper body comes from your neck. Subluxations in your neck, decreased cervical curvature or poor body posture all limit nerve flow to your upper body. The stance of most golfers is head forward, shoulders rounded forward and chest drooping downward. This affects the consistency of the swing. If you look at the posture of many of the young golfers today, they stand with chest out, shoulders square and head in alignment with the rest of their spine. Regular chiropractic adjustments to the cervical spine can improve nerve flow to the upper body. This helps improve posture, flexibility and strength, which in turn helps to create a more repetitive golf swing. Strengthening the muscles in your shoulder is also extremely important. Rotational stretches for the entire spine can help create the flexibility needed for a powerful, fluid swing. Solid mechanics in golf start with your nervous system. Regular chiropractic care will help keep your swing on track. Strength and flexibility training are also essential in making this game easy and enjoyable. This is one of the only sports that can be played at any age, so keep your spine healthy and you’ll be playing for decades.

The DNA Diet ................................................... In 1990 the Human Genome Project launched. It was an international research project whose goal was to identify and sequence all of the genes of the human genome. The project concluded in 2003 after 92% of the human genome was sequenced. This is a major scientific breakthrough. The hope is that genomic studies will lead to advances in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, including obesity.
By Dr. Melissa P. Broyles, D.O.
W
eight loss diets come and go. There was the Atkins, South beach, No-fat, and No-carb diet. However, most people regained weight after stopping these diets and their popularity ceased. Now, a diet based on an individual’s DNA is available. The good news is our DNA will not change, as do fad diets. The “genome” (the complete set of genetic information) of any individual is unique.
In less than 40 years, the prevalence of obesity in the U.S. has increased by over 50%. Currently, two out of every three American adults are overweight or obese. Obesity and overweight account for nearly one in every ten American deaths, and costs our nation $223 billion dollars per year. Obesity is a complex problem, and now the epidemic has spread to our children. It is estimated that today’s children will be the first generation to live shorter life spans than their parents. In some cases of obesity, genetics seem to be responsible; in others, various combinations of hormonal, metabolic and behavioral factors may play a role.
We are now able to identify a variety of genes that influence an individual’s eating behaviors, metabolism, response to diet and exercise, as well as identify an individual’s propensity to develop certain medical conditions. DNA testing is a great catalyst to help people make lifestyle changes, especially in respect to diet. A single saliva sample can identify how a person metabolizes fats, carbohydrates and protein. This information can be very helpful for a person trying to lose weight. For example, if an individual is a slow metabolizer of fats, then it’s recommended he/she be on a low fat diet to achieve weight loss. Clinical studies show that individuals who follow a genetically appropriate diet lose weight more easily. Most insurance companies pay for a portion of the DNA testing. However, the physician must submit necessary paperwork which includes the patient’s vital signs and a valid reason (i.e. weight gain, fatigue) for ordering the test. It takes 2-3 weeks for the lab to process the DNA sample. The patient is then provided a personalized genetic report and an individualized diet plan according to their DNA.
So remember, one diet is not right for everyone. We are all uniquely designed. If you would like to find your genetically appropriate diet, please contact our office at 610-459-3773. www.drmelissapbroyles.com

Swelling In Your Body May Be A Condition Known As Lymphedema Article by Joanna Mikhail, DPT, ATC, CLT Doctor of Physical Therapy Certified Lymphedema Therapist
F
or Many people are unaware that they are living with a condition known as lymphedema. If you notice swelling anywhere in your body you should ask your doctor if a referral for an evaluation for lymphedema treatment is appropriate. When a patient receives a diagnosis of lymphedema, they may experience relief that there is a name for their bewildering cluster of symptoms, but there may also be fear and anxiety. How will lymphedema affect my quality of life? Can lymphedema be treated? What can I expect going forward? Where can I go for help? At Lymphedema Clinics of America, our certified lymphedema therapists will help you understand the nature and progression of this condition and provide you with a highly effective treatment plan. We will initially address relieving your acute symptoms, and then provide you with tools and therapies to keep those symptoms under control in order to improve your quality of life. The treatment protocol used at Lymphedema Clinics of America is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). This therapy program was developed in Europe and has been used in the United States for 20 years. “Numerous studies have shown the effectiveness of this approach and is now commonly the treatment of choice.” There are 2 phases of CDT. The goal of Phase I is to reduce the swelling in the affected limbs. This phase is done at the clinic with the patient continuing some aspects of the treatment at home between sessions. The goal of Phase II is to prevent the swelling from reoccurring. This phase is continued at home using an individualized program designed by the lymphedema therapist. Phase 1 of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is composed of four components. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), compression bandaging, exercising and skin care. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, manual technique that moves
www.TheWomensJournal.com
the lymphatic fluid responsible for the swelling of the limbs, away from the affected limb and into the pathway of healthy lymph nodes, which will release the fluid into the venous system. Following the MLD, the therapist applies short, stretch cotton compression bandages to the affected limbs. These bandages improve the return of blood to the heart in both the venous and lymphatic systems and help to break up some hardened deposits in the skin that occurs from lymphedema – thus improving skin tone and appearance. The therapist then introduces exercises to be done while wearing the compression bandages. These exercises involve the contraction and relaxing of the muscles in the affected limb, which assists in moving the lymphatic fluid from the area. The important final aspect of Phase I is skin care. The body part affected with lymphedema is more prone to infections. The skin breaks down making it easier for bacteria to enter the body and the lymphatic fluid is protein rich, making that area an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. In addition, the immune defenses in that area are reduced making it more difficult for the body to naturally fight the infection. The skin care regime prescribed in Complete Decongestive Therapy addresses these issues and reduces the incidents and severity of skin infections. After the patient has completed the Phase I protocol of CDT, which takes place at the clinic, they move into Phase II. Phase II contains the same elements as Phase I, but the patient is taught to perform these aspects at home, using a program that is tailored to their particular needs and abilities. Patients visit the clinic for routine progress evaluations and additional assistance when required. Lymphedema cannot be cured, but through therapy the symptoms can be controlled. The patient experiences improved physical appearance, greater mobility, and an enhanced quality of life. At Lymphedema Clinics of America, we strive for the best possible outcomes for our patients in a beautiful, wellappointed and caring environment. What Are You Waiting For?

“Whether you think you can or think you can’t - you are right.” ~Henry Ford
A
erial Yoga looks intimidating & complicated to most people. The most common reason that someone does not try this new style of yoga is that they think they cannot do it, or they are not ready for it just yet. They want to get stronger or more flexible first. Take the time to dive in and you will find that VaihAyasa Aerial Yoga is one of the best ways to find a connection with your body, to build strength and flexibility, and to create space and movement in the body. Once students get started with VaihAyasa, they usually find that it is not so intimidating at all: in fact they tend to find it fun, relaxing, and oh so yummy! Vaihayasa Aerial Yoga allows practitioners to sink into their practice more quickly, to deepen stretches, to find proper alignment naturally, and to reap the benefits of inversions without strain on the joints of the body. You will find that your mind clears, shifting to become open, aware, present. You don’t have to be young or flexible to do Aerial Yoga. One of the things I love most about teaching VaihAyasa Aerial Yoga is the quick progress that can be seen in students alignment, strength, & flexibility.
“Yoga is about clearing away whatever is in us that prevents our living in the most full and whole way. With yoga, we become aware of how and where we are restricted -- in body, mind, and heart -- and how gradually to open and release these blockages. As these blockages are cleared, our energy is freed. We start to feel more harmonious, more at one with ourselves. Our lives begin to flow -- or we begin to flow more in our lives.” ~Cybele Tomlinson
For instance, Reverse Namaste (or prayer hands behind your back), is a pose that no matter how many times I tried in my regular practice, I was not able to get fully into. The support of the fabric and the space created in my shoulders from my aerial practice helped me fully into this mudra (even without the fabric) within 5 times of practicing it. Another reason I enjoy Aerial Yoga is that no matter what physical limitations a student may enter the room with (sciatica issues, shoulder strain, broken wrist), there are always adaptations that can be made to allow the student to create movement and space in the body. The ability to surrender into postures makes it the perfect way to create more flexibility naturally, and gives the practitioner a chance to feel support where the body needs it.
VaihAyasa Aerial Yoga classes are regularly offered at Kaya Wellness & Yoga, Rehoboth Beach, DE, at Kaya Aerial Yoga, in Olde City Philadelphia, & at Kaya Aerial Yoga, in Wilmington located within The BlueBallRoom. Pilates Teaches Balance For Body, Mind Pilates’ students quickly embrace the challenge these exercises offer, and they soon realize that there are additional benefits in terms of mental clarity and focus.
on your yard sale table. A healthy, balanced lifestyle is created by daily choices; so consider Pilates as an exercise method that is efficient, effective and reliable for improving your appearance, your health and your life. Since a client may practice Pilates two or three times a week, the benefits of this exercise system develop a more sculpted body and a more stable person, physically and mentally.

lients frequently express concern about maintaining balance while what they are really expressing is apprehension about potential falls or imbalance. Balance is not only a state of equilibrium; it is also the act of maintaining symmetry, poise and equilibrium. Sometimes clients forget that the concept of balance is more than physical, and balance and imbalance extend to our entire lifestyle. Whether a homemaker, a woman traveling the career path or a retiree, it’s very easy to become wrapped up and trapped in a lifestyle that is out of balance, rushing from place to place, eating processed and unhealthy food, sitting at a desk in front of a computer for hours and ending the week with no time designated for healthy exercise. So, most people know they want to create more balance, but how? First, make a commitment to yourself. Many people find that hiring a personal trainer who respects their goals will help get and keep them on the right track. Let’s face it, despite what infomercials promise, there is no quick fix here. The answer is not in a bottle of supplements or a gimmicky device that will end up
When Joseph Pilates devised this system nearly 100 years ago, he created a series of exercises that focus on strengthening the core, or the powerhouse of your body. Since the core, or center of the body, includes the front and back of the torso between the thighs and armpits, clients who regularly practice Pilates’ exercises develop longer, stronger and leaner muscles.
In time, clients become more balanced, physically and mentally, and those are goals well worth achieving. Nancy Hawkins Riggs is the founder and owner of Forever Fit Foundation, a personal training business specializing in Pilates, Gyrotonic, Gyrokinesis, Yamuna Body
Rolling and sport specific training. Forever Fit Foundation accepts clients at three sites: Dover and Lewes, Del., and Mendenhall Station, Pa., just over the Delaware line. A certified athletic trainer, she earned her bachelors degree from the University of Delaware and her master’s degree in exercise science and sports medicine from Miami University in Ohio. Today, many people associate Pilates with yoga-like exercises or stretching. That concept may be partially true, but it is a definition that is so simplistic that it’s nearly inaccurate. Pilates can be performed on the mat or on complex apparatus, or both, during a single training session. Pilates requires concentration, focus, and practice in order to build strength and develop flexibility. A well-educated trainer encourages clients of become more aware of her body because in addition to the adjusting springs on the apparatus, clients use their own body as resistance. Many clients are so conditioned to sitting and walking out of alignment, they find correction and balance a bit uncomfortable at first. Just like learning any new skill, the more you do, the easier the exercises become. The beauty of Pilates’ exercises is that they can be modified to entice beginners or even the most seasoned practitioner. 30

Dancing and Your Health Bored with your Treadmill? Try Dancing! It is the Best Cure for Two Left Feet And…Maybe a Possible Remedy for So Much More summarized in the June 19, 2003 New England Journal of Medicine. The results of the study indicate that ballroom dancing helps prevent dementia. By Yvonne M. Cimo
W
hy ballroom dancing? Let me share a bit of my personal experience. Attending my very first ballroom dance class well over a dozen years ago, I found myself in a situation where I felt shy, awkward and unsure that I really wanted to pursue this activity. I struggled to find my place in this new arena. Patient teachers, repetition, and a stick to it attitude helped me gain confidence. I find I now hold my head higher, dress differently and walk with greater assurance. I want the same for my students. I really like to see the light in their eyes when they find joy in movement. My goal is the same; teach, encourage, equip students to experience and enjoy the Gifts of Dance. Including Physical, Mental, & Social Benefits “Dance is a very powerful drug Mr. Keane. If embraced judiciously, it can exorcise demons, access deep seated emotions, and color your life in joyous shades of brilliant magenta that you never knew existed. But, one must shoulder its challenges with intrepid countenance if one is ever to reap its rewards.” ~ From the 2005 Movie: Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School Dance raises our self esteem. Learning to move as one with a partner requires a knowledge of frame and how we move together. By working on this we develop better posture, poise, and balance and so very much more can happen once we take up this incredible hobby. ability to have sex, pursue hobbies and do housework than the group that followed more traditional cardiac rehab. Dancing allows you to work at your fitness level, increasing speed and footwork as your strength and stamina improve. Other benefits of dancing for health include: • Using more of your muscle groups for overall toning • Improving balance, which can help you avoid falling injuries • Reducing stress • Improving your social life and making new friends • Having fun and feeling young • Using Oxygen more efficiently • Patients stuck to their programs longer. According to Elliott M. Antman, MD, a heart specialist at Harvard Medical School, “Dancing appears to be an attractive and fun way for heart failure patients to get their exercise,” Antman said. “I highly recommend it.”
A group of 469 men and women were studied between the years 1980 and 2001. Each member gave details about participation in six brain stimulating hobbies; reading, writing for pleasure, doing crosswords, playing musical instruments, taking part in group discussions and playing board games and 11 physical activities including: ballroom dancing, team sports, swimming and bicycling. The researchers found no significant association between physical activities and the risk of dementia – except for ballroom dancing. The amazing 76% risk reduction from frequent participation in ballroom dancing by 130 avid dancers was the highest score of all hobbies and physical activities measured in the study. Dr. Joe Verghese, assistant professor of neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, New York, offered the theory that the requirements of ballroom dancing: remembering the steps, moving in precise time to the music and adapting to the movements of one’s partner – are mentally demanding exercises. Ballroom dancing offers both physical and mental stimulation.
Tango Classes Put Parkinson’s Patients a Step Ahead From a study published in the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy.
Try Dancing for Heart Health A study conducted by medical researchers in Italy found that people with mild to moderate heart failure who took up waltzing improved their heart health, their breathing and their quality of life significantly more than those who exercised by bicycling or walking on a treadmill. The dancers reported many benefits of dancing: slightly better results for sleep, mood, and their 31
Researchers at the Washington University in St. Louis medical school compared the effects of Argentine tango lessons and exercise classes on the functional mobility of 19 Parkinson’s patients. The patients were randomly assigned to do 20 one-hour tango classes or group strength and exercise sessions designed for Parkinson’s patients and the elderly. All the patients were assessed prior to the start of these activities and after they completed the sessions. The dance classes included stretching, balance exercises, tango-style walking, footwork patterns, experimenting of timing of steps, and dance with and without a partner. By the end of the sessions, both groups showed significant improvements in standard tests designed to measure mobility. People in the tango group showed more improvement in balance than those in the exercise group. “This type of therapy looks to be superior to what is currently offered,” Researcher Madeline E. Hackney, a pre-doctoral trainee in movement science, said in a prepared statement. “The quality of life improved in these patients because of the social aspect of dancing.”

How To Keep Your Child On Track During Summer Break Presented By: Maggie Lage Article By: Dr. Raymond J Huntington, Co-Founder of Huntington Learning Center
W
hen the last school bell of the year rings, your child probably feels excited for a relaxing summer vacation. Every student needs a break from the routine and rigor of a busy school year. Although summer break should certainly be enjoyed, too long of a pause in learning will result in learning loss – otherwise known as regression. According to the Johns Hopkins School of Education students lose 2.6 months of grade-level equivalency in math computation skills over summer break. The area that suffers the most for all students is factual/ procedural knowledge. Summer learning loss is a serious issue, but one that can be mitigated. How can you prevent your child from losing ground during summer vacation? Here are several tips:
• Keep up the reading. Have your child read for 30 minutes a day. If you child needs motivation, explore summer reading programs at your library, school or local bookstore, which often offer younger children rewards for completing certain reading milestones. • Write often. Encourage your child to write letters, keep a journal, get together with friends to start a neighborhood newsletter or even collaborate with siblings or cousins to create a family newsletter. Encourage your child’s inner storyteller. Don’t focus on correcting mistakes – keep it fun and simply allow your child to practice. • Review prior year assignments. If you’ve saved some of your child’s work throughout the school year (or textbooks), spend a few minutes each evening reviewing past assignments. Before school lets out, ask the teacher what concepts are especially important to brush up on throughout the summer.
Hear what parents are saying about Huntington • I just wanted to thank you for working with me and my family from the beginning to help me get the tutoring I needed for the SATs. You were always so willing and beyond flexible to help meet my personal needs. I truly appreciate all of the hard work you did to put me with a WONDERFUL teacher
and help me boost my scores in order to help me achieve my dreams! • We wish to thank you and everyone at Huntington. The devotion and patience shown has been wonderful. Maggie, we will never forget how you went beyond the call of duty to help us.

• Take classes. Most communities offer a range of fun, educational programs and class for children of all ages – through museums or community/arts centers. Check out what is available and of interest to your child. • Attend a summer learning program. Huntington Learning Center offers customized summer learning programs for children of all ages, which are a great way to keep students learning and reduce any summer regression. It doesn’t take a monumental effort to help students minimize regression during the summer months. Questions on how to help your child retain what he or she has learned? The Earning Power Of Education By Nora Riehl Zelluk and Tara White Kee, Professional and Continuing Studies, University of Delaware
T
he value of education in the workplace is well documented. Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that earnings consistently increase with the level of education. On average, workers over 25 years old with bachelor’s degrees earn an astonishing 70% more than their counterparts with high school diplomas. Education beyond a bachelor’s degree increases earnings even further. Presidential initiatives underscore the importance of higher education for individuals to succeed and compete. As emphasized in White House statements on education, “Earning a post-secondary degree or credential is no longer just a pathway to opportunity for a talented few; rather, it is a prerequisite for the growing jobs of the new economy.” In addition to completing a college degree, people are turning to certificate programs to boost their earnings, add competencies to their professional toolboxes and improve their career prospects. Certificates are nondegree programs that offer practical, concentrated study in a particular professional area. They provide a way to earn a credential in a relatively short time— generally between four months and a year. A recent study by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce called certificate programs a gateway to gainful employment and college degrees. “Certificates
are a homegrown American invention and are expanding rapidly in response to a wide range of educational and labor market demands,” reported the Georgetown researchers. A major finding of the study is that the postsecondary certificate has become a cost-effective tool for increasing educational attainment and gainful employment . The University of Delaware’s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies offers a range of certificates in the health care, legal and business fields: Analytics--Optimizing Big Data, Business Analyst, Clinical Trials Management, Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, Paralegal, Advanced Paralegal, Project Management and Social Media Marketing Strategy.Certificates meet in the evenings in Wilmington starting in September.

Camp Pecometh Grows Oyster Babies Camp Pecometh and Retreat Ministries, located in Centreville, Maryland, recently made an impact on the nearby environment, both with the cleanup of the Chesapeake Bay and on the local oyster population. Last summer, an associate from the Chester River Association suggested that the camp might want to be involved with the Marylanders Grow Oysters program. Why oysters? They play a vital role in helping to strengthen the life of the Bay by feeding on plankton and filtering it out of the water. It’s just like a filtration system for the water that comes from your tap at home. The Pecometh team jumped at the chance, and knew it could definitely be an opportunity they could share with guests, school groups and also the
day campers that attend their “Schools Out, We’re In” program during the school year. Soon after, four cages of “spat on shell” (baby/larval oysters attached to recycled oyster shells) were “adopted”. In October 2013, the day campers did experiments in which they observed turbidity (how cloudy the water was due to particles of dirt and other matter in the water). Megan Shitama, Retreat Programs Coordinator, with Pecometh commented that it was a great “hands-on thing to do with the kids.” After nine long months, in May of this year, the spat, now growing oysters, were placed in a new home in Lankford Bay, at the southern end of the Chester River. It will take about three years for them to grow to “market” size. This recent effort shows us that we can all take time to improve the quality of our rivers and streams, and ultimately, the life of the Chesapeake Bay. The Pecometh team will also keep the public updated on the progress of the oysters as they continue to thrive in their new habitat. 34

One Student. One Teacher. One Revolutionary Difference! Back to Basics K-12 Private School is Delaware’s only Department of Education approved 1-on-1 Private School
By Beverly Stewart, M.Ed.
A
t Back to Basics K-12 Private School, your child can have that 1-on-1 teacher interaction every single day. Back to Basics offers a school experience like no other and is Delaware’s only Department of Education-approved 1-on-1 Private School. The experienced and degreed instructors at Back to Basics K-12 Private School work together as a team to customize and tailor an integrated curriculum to meet the unique needs and abilities of your child. The teaching staff is dedicated to the growth and development of your child academically, socially, mentally and emotionally. The result is improved academic skills, increased self-esteem, and unparalleled subject mastery. Back to Basics K-12 Private School offers the four core curriculum areas
of English/language arts, math, social studies and science, as well as electives for all grades. Electives include foreign languages (16 offered), business courses, psychology, study skills, art, music, drama, computer literacy, and over 50 other subjects. Back to Basics K-12 Private School is designed with your child in mind:
My child struggles to pay attention in a crowded classroom. Can a 1-on-1 school help him focus?
In a 1-on-1 setting, students have the constant attention of the teacher, so that they can listen and speak with much more comfort than in a group situation. Each child’s strengths and nonstrengths are addressed more fully -- without the distraction of other students or the teacher’s compensation for a variety of skill levels in one classroom. Plus, each student can go at his or her own pace and benefit from each teacher adapting to his or her individual learning style.
My child has been identified as gifted and is simply not challenged at his current school. Would
a 1-on-1 environment help?
Your child may benefit from an innovative 1-on-1 approach to learning. Since students are able to move at their own pace and teachers are not focused on a range of skill levels found in a traditional classroom, the sky’s the limit! In addition to core curriculum, your child may want to explore a broader range of electives or Honors courses not offered at the school he is currently attending – from Mandarin Chinese, to Anatomy, to Art History.
My child is currently pursuing a future career while still in school. How can a 1-on-1 school help simplify our hectic life?
If your student is actively pursuing a career in acting, modeling, dance, or sports, congratulations! Hard working students like yours have a host of additional challenges when enrolled at a traditional school, the least of which is simply scheduling. Back to Basics’ 1-on-1 setting can allow your child to more easily fulfill school requirements while juggling auditions, work, games, practice or travel. School hours can be adjusted to outside obligations, so that no assignments or class time are missed. And, because Back to Basics K-12 Private School is a Delaware Department of Educationapproved school, seniors graduate with a high school diploma.
My child is socially immature. Would a 1-on-1 school be a good fit?
Every student deserves an environment conducive to him or her. The experienced instructors at Back to Basics join forces to create a unique environment where your child can learn www.TheWomensJournal.com
35
-- and feel good about school. The results can be transformative! After one to three years, Back to Basics K-12 Private School students confidently return to a traditional school setting or graduate.
My child is coping with a medical issue. How would a 1-on-1 school benefit her? Whether your student has a chronic condition, emotional challenges, or has a short-term medical issue, a 1-on-1 school may be the answer. Back to Basics K-12 Private School offers a uniquely caring and supportive academic environment with scheduling flexibility to ensure your child’s academic success.
How to apply:
If you are interested in applying for admission, a preliminary meeting at the Back to Basics K-12 Private School is the first step. During this meeting you’ll explore your expectations, share information about your child’s current school situation and history, and discuss any specific needs. A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words Whoever coined the adage “A Picture is worth a Thousand Words” knew the value or experienced the power of communication where time was of the Ara Atkinson-Skinner essence! This phrase is CEO/Illustrator powerful and a huge Ara offers creation solutions to business owners, entrepreneurs, clue for folks who have art directors, authors, writers trouble getting folks to and discerning clientele “Make Their Mark ” with pay attention to them or distinct Unforgettable original their wonderful amazing illustrations and creative impressions for an audience product offerings! of one to a multitude.
Why wouldn’t we want to clarify or deliver a message faster? Another very close phrase published in 1911, "Use a picture. It's worth a thousand words." quoted by the newspaper editor Arthur Brisbane discussing journalism and publicity. The Russian writer Ivan Turgenev who wrote Fathers and Sons in 1862, said, "A picture shows me at a glance what it takes dozens of pages of a book to expound." The psychologist Jerome Bruner of New York University has described studies that show that people only remember 10% of what they hear and 20% of what they read, but about 80% of what they see and do.
So now that you know the importance of visual aids, the next step is using them. You can always use the freebie (clip art) that comes with most of the software today, but when you really want to stand out, you need original art! Original art can depict your message or tell your story which will be best provided by an Illustrator. An illustration can bring to life a logo, article, story, poem, event poster or piece of textual information by providing a visual representation of something described in the text. Illustration comes from the Latin word illustra'tio, illu'stro meaning enlighten, irradiate. An illustration is a “PICTURE” a depiction made by an artist, such as a drawing, sketch, painting, photograph, or other kinds graphic means.

“It’s Just A Sign, It Doesn’t Have To Be Professional.” ? y l l a e R , h O
rom the business card in your pocket By Carol Mack Warner to the digital billboard President you see on the highway while going to work, signs are so much a part of your everyday life you take them for granted. Outside to inside, lobby to office, in the home, everywhere, signs are there to announce, inform, direct, warn and guide. Signs are a visual, non-verbal way to communicate and not just by the words alone. The type of sign, location, choice of font or letter style, sizing, layout and design all play a part in getting the message and your best image across. It’s not just a sign – it’s tells others who you are and if designed correctly, will attract the type of client you want. I have a friend who decides where she will eat if she likes the sign outside. If it’s neglected, she wonders what else is being neglected. This applies to all the signage you have in your business. Does your print material reflect the type of business you do? A comic book store will likely suffer using signage that a funeral home would use and vice versa. A comic book letter style and super hero are as out of place as somber tones and lettering are for the comic book store. Where do you go and what do you look for when searching for a graphics professional? Often word of mouth is a good way to start but don’t stop there unless they make you feel welcome and comfortable to discuss your needs. A full service sign company can save time and money if they fit. They can design and produce the final product without having to search out a company to produce your sign. A good relationship should form and they can provide other types of signs that follow your look without having to repeat the introduction process. If you want a logo designed, determine the purchase price of the design package so you can own the artwork. This is standard in the industry and should be discussed prior to work being done. This will allow you to take and use your artwork freely. Remember it is your business and you are the driver, so don’t be intimidated if it doesn’t work for you. If you work with the designer, you should be asked a variety of questions including the type of client you want to attract. Yes, that is what a sign can do by the way it is designed. All you have to do is watch TV advertisements to see how that works. Other questions include a discussion of the following topics: Type of sign, where will it be located and mounted, what are you trying to say and conveying the message using the visual clues of font style, colors and images. www.TheWomensJournal.com
Type of Sign: The type of sign is determined by the purpose and what you want to say: Large format printing, posters, banners, A.D.A. interior signage, real estate site signs, traffic signs, business cards, engraving, raised lettering, cast bronze plaques, flags, specialty items, vehicle lettering, car wraps, window lettering, labels, decals, magnets, directories, trade show, floor graphics and custom items all have different properties and uses. It is amazing to think that many weren’t in existence even 20 years ago. New products are coming out all the time. Location: What distance away from the sign will viewer stand? How will it be mounted? Please check with your township for the appropriate permits and regulations for exterior signs. A.D.A.(American Disabilities Act) signage with raised lettering and Braille II translation also have specifications for production, installation and use. Layout - Image This is where your message will work or fail. The layout of your message is influenced by many considerations including purpose, fonts or letter style, graphics or icons, color and size. If your message is to announce your place of business, then it is important to be visible from
the street quickly – so cars passing by can see the sign easily within the few seconds they pass by. Remember, this applies to vehicle lettering as well. The back door is a “billboard” and gets the greatest length of viewing time from the people traveling or stopping behind the vehicle. Drivers pass by the sides quickly, their eyes on traffic ahead. This valuable “real estate” needs to be optimized for quick viewing. Window lettering, banners, interior placards, business cards and brochures are saved for more detailed information. Traffic, parking and warning signs are designed to impact immediately and are simple and direct. Choice of font or letter style, graphics and materials express more information than the written message. The prospective client gets a feeling about the business from the sign: “It looks like it’s a good, clean and friendly place to eat.” “Too cheap looking – the furniture will probably fall apart.” “Outdated and bad maintenance – probably cutting back on quality.” “New sign – they must be doing well –let’s try it.” Handwritten signs are pretty much a thing of the past except in “back in 5 minutes” type of situations. Do not confuse this with professional hand lettering, almost a lost art in the industry and highly prized. The office printer is common place and can be forgiven to be used as temporary signage. After a short period of time, the sign should be removed or replaced if the message is a permanent one. Temporary signage gets tattered, worn and generally lacks the authority of your company image. There is more to it than just written words. It’s an opportunity for prospective and current customers to identify with your business and image. An experienced, professional graphic designer and sign maker will make your signs work for you.
So it isn’t just a sign. Really. “This is the second set of signs that Carol has made for my business, and just like the first time the signs look great, and the turn around time was unbelievable for the delivery of the signs. Not only did she put the signs up perfectly, she also rushed and had them up for my OPEN HOUSE, Thanks” ~ H. Shafer, Rehoboth, DE

Adjusting To Life Financially After A Divorce Review your insurance needs
Presented By Frederick J. Dawson, ChFC, CLU
T
here’s no doubt about it – going through a divorce can be an emotionally trying time. In addition to the emotional impact a divorce can have, it’s important to be aware of how your financial position will be impacted.
Assess your current financial situation Following a divorce, you’ll need to get a handle on your finances and assess your current financial situation, taking into account the likely loss of your former spouse’s income.
Establish a budget
Typically, insurance coverage for one or both spouses is negotiated as part of a divorce settlement. Evaluate your health, disability and life insurance coverage. Finally, make sure that your property insurance coverage is updated.
Change your beneficiary designations After a divorce, you’ll likely want to change the beneficiary designations on any life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and bank or credit union accounts. Keep in mind that a divorce settlement may require you to keep a former spouse as a beneficiary on a policy. This is also a good time to review your will. Make sure that your former spouse isn’t still named as a personal representative, successor trustee, beneficiary, or holder of a power of attorney in any of your estate planning documents.
Consider tax implications
A good place to start is to establish a budget that reflects your current monthly income and expenses. Include your regular salary and wages, and any monthly alimony and/or child support you may receive
You’ll also need to consider the tax implications of your divorce. If you are receiving alimony, it will be considered taxable income to you. Child support, on the other hand, will not be considered taxable income.
Protect/establish credit
Consult a financial professional
Consider taking steps to try to protect your credit record and/or establish credit in your own name. You’re entitled to a free copy of your credit report once a year from each of the three major credit reporting agencies. You can go to www.annualcreditreport.com for more information.

Break Free From The Grips Of Fear W
hat keeps anyone from changing? It is fear-- fear of failure, fear of success, fear of rejection, fear of not being enough, fear of not being loved, fear of loss, fear of getting revealed as a By Joe White fraud, fear of President and Founder change, fear of Get Life Coaching. of all of the 2012 Entrepreneur above. Fear of The Year cripples us, limits us and robs us of the ability to respond. In the end it keeps us from the life that we really want. Even after we know the effects of fear and we experience the effects of fear we do little or nothing to change. Our response usually comes in the form of an “I tried.” We say, “I tried to change,” or “I am really trying to get better,” but the truth is that “trying” will never get you anything other than a reason why things didn’t work out. So roll up your sleeves and get ready to break through the barrier of your fear.
5 Keys Of Breaking Through The Barrier Of Fear 1) See it as it is, not worse
Too often we make our fears bigger than they really are. It always reminds me of the wizard in the Wizard of Oz. The big scary Wizard was really a small little scared man. We can’t dismiss the fear, because fear is ultimately here to serve us, but we want to hear its message and then move forward. Most of the times we can handle the fear of normal proportion. It’s when it becomes larger than life that we become overwhelmed by its presence.
2) See it better than it is
4) Take massive action
This is the step where people stop. It is also called approach avoidance. I conduct a seminar called Breaking Through The Barrier. It is a seminar in which we get people to move past their fears. That is the day where they take everything they learn and apply it to break a pine board with their bare hand. As we get closer to the time when we break boards, you can see the fear begin to rise. Even though they now have the resources, they become scared to take the action. You can imagine how powerful it is when they push past the fear and take action and they see the board is broken! Don’t stop at the doorway, go through the door of opportunity.
5) Don’t give up
Even when we take action, it doesn’t mean we will automatically get the results. We could be doing the wrong action, not enough action, not doing the action long enough yet. We cannot always measure success by the results we get. We must keep focused on what is important and keep moving forward. If our approach doesn’t work, we must try something else. If that doesn’t work, we need to try something else. One quality that is so common in successful people is that they don’t give up. The acronym for FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real. We give fear life or more life in our mind. The more we avoid it, the greater it is until it becomes a 10,000 pound gorilla. We must step up and walk through the fear. Not later, not tomorrow but now. Live Free.
Until next issue… I wish you love and passion - Joe White
Visit us on the web: www.getlifecoaching.com www.facebook.com/getlifecoaching www.twitter.com/getlifecoaching Like most married woman with children , I found myself coursing through life on autopilot. My first priority was taking care of my family, which lead me to take a back seat to my own life. I “thought” I was unhappy and that crushed my spirit. How could I be so unhappy when I have so much to be grateful for? What I learned through attending the Fire Walk and Breaking through the Barrier is that you don’t “lose” happiness, or need to search for it. It is there with you everyday. You just need the right tools to help you wipe away fear, old habits and denial . Once you accomplish that goal , you’ll find happiness standing right in front of you, arms extended; ready to embrace you once again . Thank you GLC. Thank you for teaching me how to get back in the driver’s seat….I am thoroughly enjoying the ride! With lots of love and gratitude, Cindy Berkowitz
Stuck In Neutral? Celebrating Our 15th Anniversary
Our brains work on two guiding principles, one is the desire to avoid pain and the other is the desire to gain pleasure. When we are in pain or uncomfortable we naturally will seek a way to get out of pain. If we can create a clear vision or image of what we really want, our brain will begin to find ways to make it a reality.
Ultimate Breaking Through The Barrier June 20-21
3) Recognize your resources
We all have resources. Sometimes it is a friend or co-worker, other times it is within us from a time in the past we overcame fear, or it is a place where we can go to get more information and help. Regardless where we find the resources we must prepare before we take action. It is like a country that is preparing for war. They begin to stock pile weapons. You need to stock pile your resources now.

Custody – Tough-Love Style O
kay, we need to get serious about Custody in Delaware and we need to do it now.
I am constantly faced with questions about parents’ rights and children’s rights and what will happen in Court. This article continues our discussion on Custody and will explain three main topics in the hopes that it will allow you to better deal with your Custody issue – not to mention better understand the outcome. These three topics are:
By Shana A. Pinter, Esq.
1. Expectations of the Court 2. Co-Parenting 3. Considering your Actions from your Child’s Point of View Number one, the Family Court and its officials deal with families breaking up on a daily basis. When there are two parents fighting over an issue pertaining to their child or children they will expect the following: 1. That the parents have talked about the issue before coming to Court; 2. That the parents have tried to come to some agreement by acting reasonably; and 3. That the parents are using the Court as a last resort. Do not expect either a happy Judge or a decision in your favor when you’ve done nothing to help move along the situation before taking it to Court. Number two, Co-Parenting: this is a BIG issue. The Court expects you and the other parent of your child or children to continue to raise this child or children together in a respectful, mature, thoughtful, unresentful, non-spiteful, reasonable manner. However you chose to have your child or children – be it a long term relationship, marriage, or a one night stand (to quote Dr. Phil “When you choose your actions, you choose your consequences” and we all must understand that in every action we take we are making a choice. I’ll continue to have my “Dr. Phil” hat on throughout this article, so be forewarned.) – you and your child or children’s other parent are tied together for life. It doesn’t stop when the Custody order comes down, it doesn’t stop when she, he or they turn 18. It lasts forever, and Ever, and Ever. This means, going back to point one (Expectations of the Court), you www.TheWomensJournal.com
have to communicate with the other parent somehow. So many people I speak with state that they just can’t talk to the other person – they either get yelled at or berated; agreed with so they’ll just shut up; or ignored altogether. Of course you can’t communicate! You’re divorced, broken-up or barely know each other in the first place. But guess what? You will get absolutely nowhere if you don’t continue to try to communicate. You have to make decisions together. You have to agree on deviations from the Custody and Visitation schedule together. You have to sometimes make alternate arrangements for care for the kids together. You have to agree on extracurricular activities, summer camp/care, schooling together. It comes down to one thing – you remain the parents of this child or these children and no matter how much you may hate the other parent or how stupid you think they are or how they are acting, you have to be able to communicate somehow and keep at it until you find a way that works for both of you. Third is considering your actions through the eyes of your child or children. I think we can all agree that a divorce/break-up is a decision made by parents and children get no say or control in the matter. You must constantly consider how your actions against/ about/involving the other parent looks from your child or children’s point of view. Kids are sponges and absorb so much of their
47
law
surroundings, much more than they let on. They for sure are taking in how you treat their other parent. This not only puts the child in the middle of your relationship and creates feelings of guilt and sadness, but also affects how they are learning how to be married and have children in the future. Is it hard to be respectful of the other parent when you have a lot of resentment? Of course, but you have to do it anyway for the health and welfare of your child or children.

What Happens When Good Employers Go Bad?
Delaware Workers’ Compensation Benefits
By Heather A. Long, Esq.
M
urphy’s Law states that whatever can go wrong will go wrong. Much to our dismay, this is true in life, and also with regard to work injuries. Sometimes you can do all the right things but, through no fault of your own, still face difficulties navigating your work injury claim. This is especially true if your employer, for whatever reason, did not have the requisite workers’ compensation insurance in place at the time you were injured. Thankfully, most employers in the State of Delaware carry the required workers’ compensation insurance. However, employers are not infallible. Sometimes they make innocent mistakes like forgetting to pay their insurance premiums, sending their payment to the wrong address, or sending an insufficient check. Other times they purposely evade paying their insurance premiums. For whatever reason, if you’re one of the unlucky few that are injured while working for an uninsured employer, this article is for you! Normally, if a worker is injured on the job, the employer is very forthcoming with turning over their workers’ compensation insurance information, and filing the First Report of Injury. (See previous articles explaining what the “First Report of Injury” is, and what it does.) If, however, the employer is uninsured, they will usually either use delay tactics in hopes that the injured worker doesn’t press the issue, or they will attempt to bargain with the injured worker. Both tactics are reprehensible, and both have the same effect on the injured workerthey make obtaining workers’ compensation benefits very difficult, but not impossible.
In my practice, I’ve seen a growing number of employers fail to carry the required workers’ compensation insurance. In those instances, when an employee is injured we still press forward as if the employer did have insurance. One of the goals is to get to a hearing with the Industrial Accident Board (the State of Delaware administrative agency that oversees work-related injuries) as quickly as possible. Again, there will be more obstacles placed in your path before you can get to a hearing, but a savvy attorney will be able to guide you past the obstacles to reach your first goal- presenting your case at the hearing. After the hearing is conducted, the Industrial Accident Board will issue a written decision to the injured worker and also to the employer. If the decision awards benefits to the injured worker, it is now time to put the tenacity of the attorney to the test. The attorney then goes into “collection mode” in an attempt to collect your debt- your workers’ compensation benefits. In doing so, there are several things that can happen: the employer’s assets can be collected, they can be sold at a sheriff sale, their earnings and tax returns can be garnished and they can be forced to sell company and personal assets to compensate you.

In order to recover money or assets to pay the benefits the injured worker is entitled to, an aggressive attorney is needed. This tends to be an area of the law that, because of the difficulty collecting, many attorneys choose not to involve themselves. If other attorneys who were unwilling to fight to get you the benefits that you deserve have turned you down, I offer free consultations to take a second look at your case. This consultation will give you insight as to whether your particular employer is insured, and if not, what your recourse is. All of the lawyers in my firm, including myself, offer consultations for work injuries. The consultations are free, and the insight into your claim could be invaluable to your future health and benefits.

Like many, I did not think I would be chosen. However, I was. Instead of being the attorney in the courtroom, I was now Juror Number 2. Over the years, I have heard others complain about having to serve on a jury, or sometimes ask how they could be excluded. The Jury Act allows courts to excuse a juror from service if summoned on the grounds of “undue hardship or extreme inconvenience.” From my own personal viewpoint, I realize jury service is one of the most important civic duties you can perform. Though candidly, I was very concerned about being out of the office and absent from my clients for a period of time. I am honored to work with a really dedicated, caring team of personal injury attorneys, who also understand how important jury service is. My partners readily stepped in to help me and expertly cover my tasks. While I was out of the
out and go home. That was definitely not the case with our jury. Despite the fact that my fellow jurors were anxious to get back to their families and jobs, each person worked very hard to try and navigate through a myriad of highly technical information and evidence to try and reach a just consensus. After two days of diligent deliberation, we were not able to agree, despite how hard everyone worked. The Judge ruled a mistrial. In the end, all jurors exchanged email addresses and contact information and have kept in touch with one another. One young juror was concerned about being away from his employment for his two weeks of jury service. Federal Statute 28 U.S. Code Section 1875 mandates that no employer shall discharge, intimidate, or coerce any permanent employee by reason of such employee’s jury service in any court of the United States.
office for jury service, though I was not available during the day for two weeks, through technology I was able to email clients and follow-up with my own work every evening. In the end, I was glad I was chosen to serve on the jury. It was a wonderful experience. I had the opportunity to learn about a whole new area of law I had never practiced, Patent Law. I heard talented expert engineer witnesses from all over the country speak about technology, inventions, and patent infringement. I was fortunate to view highly skilled legal teams for both parties. Each legal team utilized state-of-the-art technology in the courtroom while arguing their positions to the jury. Candidly, it was a whole new experience and change for me to be in a courtroom and be silent.
I will not be called to serve again for two years in Federal District Court under the Jury Act. I am grateful though for learning about an area in which I do not regularly practice, and for the new friendships I made. However, I am happy to be back to my comfort zone – helping clients who have been injured at work or in motor vehicle accidents.
One of the most rewarding aspects of jury duty for me was meeting and getting to know my fellow jurors. We were a quite diverse group of all ages, from all walks of life, and from all three counties in Delaware. As an attorney, I had previously heard stories that jurors may rush to judgment in order to be able to get

Your Rights Under The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act M
any of us have consumer debt: credit cards, a car loan, a mortgage, or other personal bills, and we may know what it is like to fall behind. We By Mary Higgins, Esq. may not know, however, that we have rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) that can protect us from harassing, threatening, and illegal behavior by debt collectors. (Business debts are not subject to the FDCPA.) Before discussing the basic protections provided by the FDCPA, it is important to have a clear understanding of what debt collectors are. Debt Collectors are hired on commission to collect accounts. They may also purchase debts outright from creditors. All contact between a debt collector and a debtor must include what is known as a “miniMiranda” disclosure (alluding to the rights told to suspects when arrested, known as Miranda rights). Any oral or written communication must include language that the “communication is an attempt to collect a debt and any information obtained will be used for that purpose.”
If the debt collector does not provide the original creditor’s identity, the collection must cease.
a violation. Debts beyond their statute of limitations cannot be collected.
After initial contact, the FDCPA continues to protect the debtor from overreaching, harassing, and illegal activities.
If you think a debt collector has violated the FDCPA, complete a FREE CASE EVALUATION at www.letsbelegal.com, or call Mary Higgins (302-894-4357). The FDCPA provides for damages if your rights have been violated, and the statute allows one year to bring a lawsuit.
Some of the most complained-about ongoing FDCPA violations are: 1. Calling repeatedly to annoy/harass 2. Collecting unauthorized fees, interest, or expenses 3. Threatening dire consequences (arrest, property seizure) 4. Failing to identify debt collector 5. Calling at work after being told not to 6. Using abusive and/or obscene language 7. Calling third parties and revealing debt 8. Failing to verify a disputed debt 9. Calling before 8am and after 9pm 10. Threatening violence Debts are private matters; not only is revelation to third parties a violation of the FDCPA, but communication that identifies the sender/caller as a debt collector or allows the contents to be read (e.g. postcards) is also
Within 5 days of initial contact, a debt collector must provide in writing: (1) the amount of the debt; (2) the name of the creditor; (3) a notice that unless the consumer disputes the validity of the debt within 30 days, the debt will be considered valid; and (4) that the consumer can request verification. All collection activities must stop during the validation process.
(This article should be used for informational purposes only and should not be relied upon for legal advice. To determine the proper legal advice for your situation, an attorney must review your case.) Mary became a Delaware attorney in 2002. Her practice was started to enforce Federal consumer laws due to concern that, unless one was in bankruptcy, few Delaware resources existed to battle illegal collection activities. Mary is Of Counsel to a national law firm that helps consumers fight foreclosures. She also conducts Fair Hearings for the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services, judging appeals from decisions on Medicaid and other social services. In law school, Mary was a member of Phi Delta Phi Harrington Inn Honor Society, and represented Widener University Law School for the Philadelphia Bar Association Judge Irvin Stander Memorial Prize in Administrative Law. Based on her record of public service, she was awarded a Public Service Fellowship by the University of Delaware (then) College of Urban Affairs and Public Policy, to obtain her Master’s Degree in Public Administration. She was chosen as a Graduate Woman of Excellence, and won a Legislative Fellowship to work with the Delaware State Senate Majority Caucus.
Mary did a great job representing me. She kept me informed of what was happening with my case and let me know what I needed to do on a regular basis. When you have a legal issue in your life it can overwhelm you. Knowing someone was handling things legally allowed me to focus on the rest of my life, this was a true blessing. ~ Melissa T. 50

You Have Found “The One”...Now The Perfect Ring by Jim Stein
A RA I LLUSTRATED. COM
Buying a ring is a daunting task, especially for someone like me who really had no clue where to begin. Edward & the team at Stuart Kingston walked me through every single step of the process. I went down to learn about the differences and Ed gave me some great advice. I started gathering some information about what styles she liked and sent them some pictures. His team helped me design and customize a ring that would be perfect for her. It only took a few weeks to build and they updated me every step of the way. Once it was completed, I was blown away and it made my proposal a lot easier knowing I had a beautiful ring from Stuart Kingston by my side. I would recommend this place to anyone as you won't find a better team to help you from beginning to the end. - Brad Rittle

Selecting the ideal engagement ring can be somewhat daunting. However, with a little know-how, it can be a very rewarding experience.

Do they give you an appraisal with the purchase so you can have your ring properly covered by insurance? Can they make changes to the design or settings to accommodate your budget or design taste? Do they offer financing programs? Are they willing and patient to help you search for that perfect ring? Mary Barnes is SK Jeweler’s resident Custom Jewelry Designer.

I recently purchased an engagement ring from Stuart Kingston Galleries and can not sing their praises loud enough. I'm a dude, through and through, and had no practical knowledge about buying diamonds; let alone building a ring. They walked me through the entire process, from picking the stone, to custom designing the setting, to getting the ring insured. When they didn't have the diamond I wanted in house, they shopped around for the diamond and found something that hit all of my wants and stayed within my budget. When they delivered the ring, I couldn't have been happier. Best of all, when I delivered the ring she said yes. Thanks Ed, I couldn't have done it without you! - Maximillian Osswald I would never go anywhere else to buy an engagement ring...and I live in Los Angeles. The Stein's are the classiest, most trust worthy people in the jewelry business. I even got my friends in NYC, NJ & CA hooked on the Stein's. We did everything seamlessly through the phone, email and Fed-Ex. When making such a big purchase you really need that trust factor...and you can absolutely trust Stuart Kingston Galleries. - PJ Byrne My cushion cut diamond engagement ring from Stuart Kingston Galleries is absolutely exquisite. My fiancé collaborated with Edward for months leading up to our proposal and was so grateful for Edward's incredible knowledge and guidance. The design is breathtaking, and the quality impeccable. We couldn't be happier! Not only are we in love with the ring --but it means the world to us to have worked with such an honest and trustworthy jeweler whose expertise is above and beyond. I look forward to designing our wedding bands with Edward and to visiting Stuart Kingston for other meaningful pieces in the years to come. - Brooke Lyons

will need. If you fall in love with stephanotis, with each bloom being less than an inch in diameter, you would need dozens of them to create a normal sized bouquet. The same size bouquet could be created with 3 hydrangea stems or a few open roses.
By Barbara P.G. Williams Co-owner of Belak Flowers
N
o matter how extravagant or simple a wedding is, the bride and groom are usually working within a budget. The Flower Factor is merely one of the considerations that affect the overall cost of any wedding ceremony and reception. When you sit down to discuss your vision for your wedding day be sure that your florist knows whether your budget is $900 or $10,000. The venue that you have chosen is an important factor in selecting the size and style of your wedding party’s bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres and ceremony pieces as well as the table centerpieces and serving table arrangements. A cathedral will require a larger and more elaborate floral display than a chapel. If the ceremony and reception are held in the same location it is possible for some arrangements to do “double duty.” Consider the ceiling height in both the ceremony and reception locations. A simple, low arrangement may look perfect in a “country inn” atmosphere, but would be insignificant in a large banquet room. Remember that whatever venue you choose you will want the flowers to make a statement. The bride’s personal preference in flowers is another major factor. Choosing seasonal flowers means more value for each dollar spent. Deciding on peonies in April before they are readily available is not a budget-minded decision. Neither is having your heart set on lilies of the valley in October. The season for certain blooms can be quite short and including them in your flower plan means that you will not get them for a budget-friendly price. The size of each bloom naturally affects how many of any particular flower you
www.TheWomensJournal.com
When flowers are important to you and the selection for both ceremony and reception is a huge priority but your budget is limited, we suggest that you use your favorite blooms in your own bouquet and in the groom’s boutonniere. Then, if you wish, they can be used sparingly in your attendant’s bouquets, with just a touch reserved for the centerpieces. The flowers used for the altar or pews or even the serving tables at the reception should be in the same color family and theme as the bridal party flowers, but it is not necessary to incorporate the more expensive, favored blooms in these pieces.
Over the years I have learned a few things from the brides that have chosen Belak Flowers for their weddings: • A bride’s bouquet should never be larger than her head! I used to think it had more to do with how embellished the wedding gown was or how tall the bride is. • To some wedding guests the table numbering system at the reception is an indication of the bride or groom’s favor. No one wants to sit at Table #18 thinking it is probably back in a corner. Using random high numbers like 102 or 303 or 701 adds a little mystique to the day when guests come to pick up their table numbers! A final thing to remember if your flower budget is limited: Do not decorate spaces that will not be photographed. It is unlikely that all 12 of the stained glass windows in the church will be included in the wedding album.
For the Love of Flowers
It is possible to be quite budgetminded when your planning allows you to re-use some of the ceremony flowers for the reception. We have designed centerpieces so that they can first be used to decorate the aisles in the church. We have also created pomander balls for the ceremony, which can later be used during the reception. It is also possible to use the bridal attendant’s bouquets for head table flowers at the reception and using large ceremony arrangements for the seating card table or in a prominent niche near the dance floor makes great financial sense. Today there are many venues that provide centerpieces in their “package”. If you like what is offered it could be a significant amount that is not subtracted from your flower budget.

“It All Leads To The Eyes!” By Carmella Gibellino-Schultz
T
he eyes are the windows to the soul. They tell more than words and are certainly one of our most impressionable features. In the fast-paced, competitive society that we live in, women not only want, but need to make the best of their looks. We are constantly on the go, and, let’s face it, everyday matters. It is no wonder that the demand for permanent eyeliner is increasingly on the rise. More and more women across the board are discovering the glories of worry-free permanent eye make up. Permanent eyeliner is the perfect solution for saving more time and money on the daily dress up routine. Not having to draw on eyeliner means eliminating smudges, smears, and the dread of the look that is left when conventional liner wears off during the day. It is a God-sent for women who are allergic to cosmetic products or who have allergies that cause them to have to reapply several times a day. It’s quite simple, less mess and stress, and it equals more time for you.
Testimonials
Convenience isn’t the only reason for the rise in permanent make-up procedures. The shape of the eye plays a significant role in enhancing beauty. While some women are content redefining the line that nature gave them, others are reaping the benefits of permanent eyeliner, as it can be used to correct or reshape the natural look of their eye. Close set, deep set, drooping, and small eyes can all be made more attractive with the proper technique. As we are well-aware, there is no universal definition of beauty. The looks that can be created with permanent eyeliner vary widely. Carmella specializes in customizing her treatments for each individual. While some of us are drama queens, many prefer a more natural look. A “lash enhancement” is a technique where a thin, crisp line is applied right at the lash line, allowing the natural beauty of one’s eye color and shape to be showcased to the highest potential. If you prefer a more dramatic look, thicker lines and deeper colors may be the chosen path. Two or more colors can be stacked or smudged, creating depth. If you like, add a sassy little upturned flair at the outer corner to achieve the “cat eye” look. Whichever style you’re going for, the glorious part is that you will wake up, shower, exercise, sun, swim, and go to bed looking your best!! When considering permanent eyeliner, it is easy to understand the importance of putting your face in the hands of a true professional. Carmella recognizes individual needs and custom blends pigment shades so that everyone can achieve the look they are seeking in order to make their eyes “pop.” She is brilliant with color theory and blending and downright meticulous when it comes to fine lines. So if you want to look and feel great in the new year, bring out your inner beauty effortlessly. Why not look extraordinary everyday and still have more time for yourself? Call for a free consultation today.

ost of us were just not born with naturally long eyelashes. Or we were and as we have aged our lashes are taking a tumble on us. Well, like most things these days, we can fix that. Re-gain the lashes of your youth. Perk up tired eyes. Save time on your morning routine. All are great benefits found with Semi-Permanent Individual Eyelash Extensions. Eyelash extensions have gained tremendous popularity in the last few years because of their natural look, ease of application, and affordability. With semi-permanent eyelash extensions, eyelashes are made thicker and longer through professional application of a synthetic eyelash that is curved to replicate a natural lash. Extensions are applied one lash at a time with care and precision using special bonding agents for a completely natural look! The result is thicker, longer eyelashes that are safe in the shower, while swimming, sleeping or exercising. Your extensions can last up to 5 weeks depending on the life cycle of your own natural lash, your eyelash characteristics, lifestyle and care of your extensions. Your initial appointment could be 60 to 90 minutes, depending on your set size choice. As your natural lash grows, your extension grows with it! 30 to 60 minute Refining Applications are recommended every 2 to 4 weeks to keep your set

Taking A Fresh Look At Your Sentimental Jewelry Allow me to clarify a bit: Do you ever wonder why your White Gold starts to look a bit dull as the years go on? The reason for this is that Gold in its purest form is GOLD in color, to produce White Gold producers must add alloys such as silver or another whitish metal which will bring the pure Gold to as white as possible, usually ending up in milky whitish yellow color. After the White Gold is produced into a piece of jewelry it is then Rhodiumed to bring the final shine to the gold, many people are not aware that Rhodium plating is simply the final process in making White Gold Jewelry.
By Roberta Kozak, Owner Roberta has been passionate about Estate Jewelry for a life time and Owner of the Jewelry Exchange of Delaware for 16 Years. Roberta started out in a small store in 1996 and over the years her small shop has grown into a family business with two locations, one in Historic Lewes and the other in Stately Greenville. This growth was made possible with the additions of her Son and General Manager Nick Dellaquila along with her Daughter Corey O’Donnell. They now own and operate both locations specializing in buying, selling, trading, consigning, and even redesigning all with a family touch. Please give us a call to set up a design appointment in a fun and creative setting! Call or stop in for a visit any time! You won’t believe the possibilities!
Rhodium Plating: Rhodium Plating can be used to modernize Yellow Gold Jewelry by simply turning into White Gold Jewelry. In the case of White Gold Jewelry, a quick Rhodium dip will make it shine like new. Rhodium can be done for a minimal cost (as low as $25 per piece). I have found that many people are just not that familiar with the Rhodium Process or terminology. www.TheWomensJournal.com
The Rhodium will wear over time and will need to be redone occasionally; much like your house needing a spring cleaning. Rhodiuming your Jewelry is a very inexpensive bit of yearly maintenance for your White Gold Jewelry. Rhodium plating in most cases can be done while you take a look around our store. Redesign and Reinventing: I can’t begin to tell you how many times I have had someone in my store who is there to sell some of their Jewelry and they are just clutching onto one piece. Usually, this is the piece that they don’t want to sell because they do have some attachment to it, but know it will just continue to sit there in the box, unused. Nine times out of ten they are just saving that piece to show me last as they are sad to part with it. I always recognize this and beat them to it by asking: “That’s one you really don’t want to sell isn’t it?, Tell me about it”…. I then will recommend a redesign almost to the point of refusing to let them sell it. We usually spend a little time chatting and drawing up a few different options and even incorporate other items they already own to save them some money. In the end my client gets to keep a sentimental piece that has been reinvented into a piece that they will wear and treasure for even longer. Repair: Please do not forget to stop in periodically to have you pieces checked for loose stones, broken prongs or just a spring cleaning! We now feature an in-house Bench Jeweler that is available to do work sometimes while your wait or with same day service. 57

Millions of men and women suffer frustration and embarrassment over the traumatic problems of excessive hair loss. It can be embarrassing to go to a salon for help. Too often, the stylist will tell you that there is nothing he or she can do. It’s estimated that over 50% of men by the age of 35, and 40% of women by the age of 40 will have a degree of baldness. Hair loss is a normal part of the aging
Low Level Laser Hair Therapy (LLLHT): Recently approved by the FDA to re-grow hair, LLLHT has taken hold in the market. In studies, 57% of individuals will re-grow hair, 85% will experience a halt in hair loss while 100% of users see a thickening of the hair shaft. Success is seen in those individuals who are in their first five years of hair loss. Not surprisingly, many scientists and physicians have been using low level laser over the years to speed up wound healing and produce new tissue. Studies have shown laser increases circulation and oxygenation of the blood to the scalp and the hair thus reducing problems such as
over oily or dry scalp, as well as dandruff and itchiness. Laser also removes calcification and other blockages around the hair bulb; as well as increasing cell replacement. In addition, it also improves the fullness, shine, body and elasticity of hair.
Non-surgical hair replacement
Non-surgical hair replacement is the choice for more and more individuals because of the advances in technology and the natural look that’s now attainable. The options currently available have made this the choice for many. The definition of hair replacement is any additional hair added to one’s existing hair or scalp to give the appearance of fuller, thicker hair. Compared to all other options, hair replacement and hair systems represent an affordable method with immediate results for solving hair loss. If a person is not happy with the results, it
can be reversed completely without any risk or scars. Hair replacement systems have improved over the years. They no longer look like toupees or common wigs. The results are truly amazing in regards to creating a natural front hairline and a totally natural appearance. With today’s advanced technology, the systems are very light density and the base product is much thinner, like another layer of skin. Attachment methods allow the wearer total freedom. They can participate in normal activities, such as working out and swimming with no detection, and there is no need to remove anything before going to bed. Coverage can be just where the client needs the hair. Whether it’s just on the crown of the head or full head, the same natural look can be achieved.

Tired Of Acne?
ACNE TREATMENT $65 Save $10 Expires: 09/30/14

early 85 percent of all people have acne at some point in their lives. For most people, acne is an inherited condition of the pores. When someone is prone to acne, their pores become blocked with dead skin cells much faster than normal. The solution lies in products that penetrate the pore and prevent dead skin cells from building up. Professional Acne Treatments done by an Acne Specialist will help you to get rid of acne and clear your skin more quickly than with just products alone.
Why Get Professional Acne Treatments? 1. To monitor your progress and make changes to your home-care as needed. 2. To exfoliate the skin so that home-care products can penetrate the pore more easily. 3. To lighten dark spots that are caused by acne lesions. 4. To hydrate the skin so that the skin is receptive to your home-care regimen. 5. To extract existing acne impactions. 6. To kill acne bacteria inside the pore. Erica Suppa is the owner of Fresh Faced Skin Care, an advanced skin care clinic with locations in North Wilmington and in Historic New Castle, DE. Erica has more than a decade of experience in the healthcare industry as an esthetician, skin care expert, and research scientist.

Hate My Hair, Can’t Leave My Stylist The One Sure Thing
Why hair? Ask any woman, a great hairstylist is hard to find. The first requirement for many is chemistry. Not the color kind, the personality kind. Women relax in the salon; they open up, let their guard down. They need a person that can offer a comfort-zone.
Professionalism. When teaching new stylists, I talk about this transformation in detail. When focused on honing their skills; staying current with advances in the industry; networking to benefit of your community, your client and yourself; and when they can talk about current events with their clients without becoming deeply personal, they’ve breached the threshold of professionalism.
This ability to loosely bond with the client assists the stylist in creating a unique, personalized look for them as they learn about lifestyle, personal preferences, and personality.
Familiarity Breeds Contempt

ala season is wrapping up. Prom season is winding down. At this point I’ve seen tons of new clients in the salon for coifs, curls and make-up and I’ve chatted with a fair number of women dressed to the nines at galas for some worthy charity and I’m still baffled. It’s the nature of my industry, once people figure out I’m a hair artist, they launch into questions about their style, my opinion on their color and cut, they solicit my ideas about changes. Giving it some thought, I usually respond, careful not to disparage their current stylist but the number of times I hear some version or another of “hate my hair, can’t leave my stylist” would floor you.
Here I stand, eye-to-eye with a blonde woman, hair nearly waist length, fried from ammonia and over processing, the color is brassy almost orange, no depth and dimension, she’s been seeing her stylist for umpteen years and “can’t possibly hurt her feelings” by making a change.
Inevitably, let me say that again, inevitably when a stylist crosses the boundaries of professionalism with their clients FRICTION will be the result. Why? Stylist are human, they make errors , many are young and the only work experience they may have includes bartender, waitress, or high school student. Stylists aren’t salaried like employees in commercial industries. Their world hasn’t depended on networking, team work, and professional polish until/ unless they work in a salon that requires these traits in addition to the technical skills of hairdressing. Hairdressers ARE entrepreneurs. They must build and retain a book of business (client list). Many mistake building a book for ”making lots for friends who come to get their hair done”. That can get you started, but it’s a shaky foundation.
It’s an easy question, would you rather your client view you as the ultimate source for all things hair or would you rather they see you as unsettled, unpredictable, chaotic and inconsistent?
The Formula Works for Everyone
Being a show salon with a strong philanthropic mission, we find ourselves consistently in the public eye. Our four shows put us literally in FRONT of thousands of people each year. Since opening in2007, we’ve connected innumerable clients with businesses in our network and client base that have helped their business; we’ve raised nearly $200,000 for the charities we’ve adopted. In the past year and a half alone we’ve helped nearly 20 people find full-time jobs after finding them unemployed or under employed, our business grew 40% last year and we’re are in growth mode this year at about 30%. We’ve won several customer service awards (because we do great hair

Or this scenario, three to five women go to their stylist friend’s home, pay discounted prices because the hair isn’t being treated in a salon, THEY HATE IT and once one woman is ready to break free and try something new, the others quickly follow. It takes bravery to lead the mutiny! No one wants to go first.

as well) and a Better Business Bureau of Delaware Torch Award.
You Get What You Pay For
Tough love here, but you wear the ‘look’ your stylist creates. You live with it every day. When it’s hard to manage, when the color fades, when your hair looks like straw, when you see no versatility to your cut, when your hair is consistently uneven, when you can’t get an appointment, when you leave the chair EVERY TIME with less than cheer and excitement in your soul. YOU ARE GETTING WHAT YOU DESERVE. No one should use emotional blackmail to retain your business. You deserve to look and feel your very best. It’s time to move on, find someone who inspires you. Here are some words from past clients: When we saw the gorgeous photos Leah had taken of our wedding, we were astonished - not because we were unfamiliar with her talent, having seen samples of her excellent past work - but because she had blended into the scenery at our event and captured every candid moment without our noticing it. She was in the right place at the right time, every time. As the result - we have every colorful memory preserved. This is precisely what you hope for from your wedding photographer. Too Count Calories Or Not temporarily cure that sweet tooth, but an hour later feeling lethargic, cranky, and hungry. We should probably be more concerned about counting the chemicals in our food than calories.

e all have counted calories that pesky unit of energy. We know junk food contains high calories and no nutritional value. Whole foods such as whole eggs, grass-fed meats, whole milk, and real butter are also considered high calorie but are very nutrient dense. I will gladly indulge in a 160 calorie sprouted grain English muffin filled with six different grains and legumes. It not only is a complex carbohydrate but a complete protein too. The 100-calorie cookie snack pack may
www.TheWomensJournal.com
Nutritional labels are required on all processed foods by the FDA. Interestingly, the calorie count is allowed a 20% window of error, which means the 100-calorie snack pack could actually be more calories. The myth that low fat products are lower in calories and better for you is simply not true. The removed fat is often replaced with sugar. Fatsoluble vitamins (A, E, K, & D) are stored in fat. When the fat is removed from the product so are the vitamins. Often these vitamins are added back to the product synthetically. These chemicals are not assimilated by our bodies, stored as fat, and can lead to disease.
Calorie counters tend to focus more on counting than the actual art of eating, enjoying the food, and listening to the body’s intuition. The stress of calorie counting leads to extra cortisol production, which is the stress hormone. The overproduction of cortisol taxes the adrenal system and is immediately stored as fat defeating the purpose of calorie counting. Eating whole foods eliminates the stress of calorie counting and nourishes the body, mind, and soul. The ingredients are the actual whole foods prepared. There is no need to worry about extra scary chemicals or reading labels. Instead of counting calories make your calories count by eating real food. Free your mind and your body will naturally start burning calories quicker. Jenn Adams, owner of Fresh Thymes CafÊ, is

Don & Jessie Brown Found Their Journey Easier With Help From Delaware Hospice’s Transitions Program Donald received various treatments; went in and out of remission and in and out of the hospitals. As Donald became weaker, Jessie’s anxieties grew, as did her need for help.
D
r. Donald Brown was an extraordinary person, and he and his wife, Jessie Brown, had an extraordinary love for each other. Sometimes you wonder at the fate that works to bring two souls together. Donald was living in Washington DC and Jessie in Virginia Beach when a mutual friend introduced them. Jessie thought she had never met a man who had so much—looks, personality, intelligence and manners. They ended up sharing the next 36 years of their lives.
Donald served on the faculty of several universities and was a lifelong practitioner of theatre arts. Jessie said, “Delaware State University offered a faculty position to Donald in 1997. Jessie and Donald adjusted well to the Dover area, raised their son, and enjoyed their Church and the community around them. Donald became a very popular professor. Jessie said, “Young people know when a professor really cares about them, and he did.” Eleven years ago, Jessie decided that they both needed to schedule physical exams. Jessie’s nagging finally forced Donald to have a routine colonoscopy. Results revealed cancerous polyps, which marked the beginning of a long journey. During the ensuing years,
Above all, Jessie says she couldn’t have survived without Kristy’s presence. “After Don passed, I was still calling Kristy to talk, and she always made me feel that she was glad to hear from me. I got lucky when I found out about the Transitions Program. We managed so much better with her to lean on. I couldn’t have done it without this wonderful support.”
Fate acted again in their favor, Jessie believes, when a friend told her to call Delaware Hospice for help from their Transitions Program. Neither Donald nor Jessie were prepared to forego curative treatments, and therefore were not ready for hospice care. Transitions Program was established by Delaware Hospice to be supportive to patients and family members who were coping with a serious illness through visits, advice on where to find practical assistance, volunteer help, and phone calls. Kristy Handley, Transitions Program Coordinator, remembers her first visit to the Browns. “I met with the family and talked to them for quite a while. They thought about it and called a few days later and asked me to sign them up.”
Delaware Hospice. Jessie said, “They took good care of both of us, prepared me well, and have kept in touch and offered help dealing with my loss.”
Jessie said, “Kristy somehow brought light into our lives. She would check on us regularly, and Donald always seemed stronger after talking with her. She gave us hope for tomorrow and helped find solutions to practical things. She arranged for a volunteer to help transport him to the doctor. I remember one day Don left his appointment saying he also needed to get to a lab for blood work. That wonderful volunteer offered to come back the same day, after another engagement, to take him!”
Delaware Hospice’s unique programs such as Transitions and New Hope for grieving children are offered at no charge to the community thanks to the generosity and faithful support of donors and volunteers. Learn more about how Delaware Hospice can help you cope with a serious illness or how you can support its programs by calling 800-838-9800 or visiting www. delawarehospice.org.
It’s your life. We’ll help you live it. The first time he held your hand was forty years ago, and he’s never let go. At Delaware Hospice, we’ll see him through your eyes. We’ll be there with comfort and care, and respond quickly when you need us. Through our expert pain and symptom management, we’ll help you find those days when it can be about him and you and taking life’s ride together.
No longer able to get himself around, Donald expressed a wish for an electric wheelchair. Jessie said, “Kristy not only managed to find someone who was selling one, she and her entire family went to pick it up and deliver it to Don. To see his face, you might have thought he had won a million dollars!”
Because he’s not just a patient, he’s the man who never let go.
Eventually, the Browns realized it was time for hospice care and chose

What To Ask Before Selecting A Senior Living Community A
s the Director of Sales and Marketing at Foulk Manor South, it is fair to say that I am knowledgeable of important questions that should be asked before selecting a senior living community. However, until I have truly walked in the shoes of seniors facing the important decision of choosing the right senior living, I cannot fully surmise what matters most to seniors considering Independent Living or Assisted Living. In an effort to dig deeper into what potential senior shoppers should consider before selecting a senior living community, I sought the help of Foulk Manor South resident Floyd Jury. Mr. Jury, age 80, has been a resident of Foulk Manor South for 2 years. He vividly remembers making the transition into Assisted Living with his wife; his input will prove to be invaluable in presenting seniors with important questions and factors to consider when choosing a senior living community. He has agreed to be honest and forthright in his answers. “Many people give more thought to planning their young child’s birthday party than they do selecting a Senior Living Facility : for themselves or their elderly parents. That’s a mistake, since it is likely one of the last important decisions to be made for yourself or for your parents,” said Jury.
In my interview with Floyd Jury, he suggested that the following topics be considered:
Meals are an important part of your life. Therefore, you should ask to retain a copy of the lunch and dinner menus for the past week. In addition, you should sample both the lunch and dinner meals the day of your visit to the Senior Living Facility. The Host will likely want to isolate you to a separate table, but you should insist on sitting with at least four different residents at each meal.
www.TheWomensJournal.com
If you are a couple, ask what happens if one person’s health declines to the point where more intensive care is needed on a permanent basis. Will that care be available in the same building? What happens to the other person; will they have to move? This was a very personal issue for me before my wife died. I chose Foulk Manor South primarily for this reason.
That way you will get a sample of what life is really like in the Senior Living Community. Activities are also important to keep your mind and body active. Ask for a copy of the current month’s activity list, and have the Host thoroughly explain each activity. If there is an activity going the day of your visit, spend educate. enrich. some time with it to empower. gain an understanding.
How much is this chosen Senior Living Facility going to cost each month, and how stable will that cost be?
In concluding my interview with Floyd Jury, he was insistent that the readers remember that the selection of a senior living is one of the most important decisions that a senior will ever make in their lifetime. Hopefully, these sample questions will Is there a Physician, Podiatrist, help stimulate some additional Ask what extra amenities are and Nurse available to the facility questions that are reflective of available such as beauty shop/ to monitor the health needs of the your personal situation and will barber, laundry, library, TV residents? Why Should You Advertise Your Business Or Profession in the Women’s Journal ?
THIS IS WHAT OUR ADVERTISERS SAY ABOUT THE
Women’s Journal
SUSANNE FAULKNER Faulkner Jewelry Design “The County Women’s Journal has been the greatest marketing tool for my business. People often say to me, “I see you everywhere!” And I secretly think to myself, no, I am not everywhere — I am in the County Women’s Journal.” MIKE SAMONZE, Vice President Institutional Advancement, Salve Regina University “A group of Women Newspapers that has opened up a whole new market for us.” JEWELRY EXCHANGE “I just wanted to let you know that the editorial that we did last issue was a great success for us. It brought us customers that were selling and gold that otherwise we probably would not have had. Our Gold / Silver buying aspect of our business is VERY important to us. We had a great response!” KRISTY HANDLEY, Marketing Director • State Street Assisted Living “I have worked with the Women’s Journal in two separate areas of my career. Each time, I continue to be impressed by the professionalism and compassion of the staff. The articles and advertisements are always perfect. If I have a problem, Pam is always there to help. What more could a Marketing Director ask for. Thank you!” J CHRISTIAN • J Christian Studio “The Women’s Journal has proven time and again to be the most advantageous and well-rounded business builder for the salon compare-none. Each new issue brings a sharp uptick in our referrals sometimes reaching 60 new referrals per article. The editors are fair, customer-service focused, and continuously improving on the paper year-after-year. We will contribute as long as they’ll have us.” JEAN ZIGLER, Patient Coordinator • Eye Physicians and Surgeons “Thanks to the Women’s Journal, many people now know about NearVision CK, a new technology to improve reading vision. When Dr. Minkovitz’s article first appeared in the Women’s Journal talking about being able to read without “granny glasses,” I was amazed at how much interest and excitement this new procedure generated. After her own CK procedure, our administrator Mary Ann Moore was so thrilled about being able to read the fine print again that she became our CK model. Because the Women’s Journal is so popular, Mary Ann is recognized everywhere she goes. I’m happy about being able to reach so many people through the Women’s Journal.” FOCAL POINT OPTICIANS “The Women’s Journal is the most successful advertising we have ever done.”

ANNA C. GIACALONE, DMD Artist in Cosmetic Dentistry “I have been in practice for over 22 years and always relied upon my patients and colleagues to refer new patients. I am honored by the trust these individuals place in me by referring friends but in recent years I realize that this is not enough. I knew I needed an ethical and tasteful way to let my community know about my ethics, practice philosophy and training. I found such a vehicle with The Women’s Journal. I feel good about helping to inform the readers about important health issues while simultaneously allowing them to get to know us. Many wonderful patients have found us as a result of our Women’s Journal articles.” AMY MARTA CARNEY, Owner Clutter Bugs, LLC “ The County Women’s Journal has been a wonderful experience for me and my business! I can’t thank them enough. Advertising with them has been a complete joy from start to finish. I have only had positive feedback and I know that will continue. I would not do it any other way!!” MELISA FERRIOLA, CPCP • Lasting Looks “Honestly, I was reluctant to do yet another print ad for my business. I had not seen results in past advertising attempts and it was hard to make another such investment. But something told me that The Women’s Journal would be different. Is it ever! I saw immediate, direct results in my business! The Women’s Journal reaches my target audience and because it is so informative to perspective clients, they follow through and I get the sale. I have the bottom line to prove it! Thank you so much.” FRED WINWARD, President Resort Landscaping “We have built our business on the readership of the Women’s Journal: I cannot believe the amount of business we receive from our articles.” JOAN CARRERO, Director of Marketing • NASE Insurance “The best customer response our company has ever had from our advertising dollar.” DR. BEN E. BENJAMIN, Founder Muscular Therapy Institute “The Women’s Journal readers who see me for treatment are earnest, intelligent people who are serious about their health and well-being. It is a pleasure to work with them. My articles in the Journal are worth their weight in gold.” BRENDA PAVLIC, CPhT SaveWay Compounding Pharmacy “We are getting tremendous feedback, I am really glad we did this, it has added more pressure, and bringing in more business, but worth it!”
CARMELLA GIBELLINO-SCHULTZ • Permanent Cosmetics “Thank you for your wonderful publication, it has been the single best advertising I have ever done in my 25 years in business. Effective, cost efficient, and a return on advertising investment, everything a business woman could ask for.”
