Finally… Laser Cataract Surgery
Bladeless And Computer Guided – The Next Frontier T
he latest step in the evolution of modern cataract surgery has now become available in Delaware. This new technology, Femtosecond laser cataract surgery, offers precision never before possible and aims to meet the expectations of today’s active By: cataract patients. FDA Approved in Jeffrey B. Minkovitz, M.D. 2010, and under investigation for several years before then, the laser has been used in thousands of cataract procedures worldwide. But within the United States, availability of these lasers has been limited. Along with my partners at the Center for Advanced Surgical Arts, I have monitored the results of this new technology. Recognizing the significant benefits, we brought this technology to our surgery center, the first and only laser of its kind in the area and one of the first 75 in the country. Already one of the most technologically advanced procedures, cataract surgery has evolved in slow, incremental steps. Until recently, the procedure was performed manually, by removing the cloudy lens through a large incision, which was closed with crude sutures. Microscopes and ultrafine sutures dramatically improved recovery, from a week of bedrest to an outpatient procedure. Then, intraocular lenses allowed for functional visual rehabilitation. The current “state of the art” procedure, phacoemulsification by ultrasound, was invented approximately 40 years ago, allowing removal of the fragmented cataract through smaller incisions, further improving outcomes. Better ultrasound machines have improved safety and efficiency, while better intraocular lenses have allowed for better overall visual results and in many cases the elimination of dependency on eyeglasses. Now, in yet another significant leap forward, cataract surgery has evolved to once again stand as one of the most technologically advanced surgeries of any kind. The Femtosecond laser, originally developed to create LASIK flaps for laser refractive surgery, can now be used to design and create all of Dr. Minkovitz programming the necessary the new LensX laser. CK® Testimonial... It finally occurred to me what has been missing during the last 2 days. Since Richard’s surgery, he isn’t complaining about his inability to read something on the fly without searching for his

incisions for cataract removal and astigmatism correction, precisely measuring the ocular structures with micron precision and displaying these structures through real-time high resolution digital images. The laser can also create the critical opening of the lens (capsulorrhexis), and also fragment the lens before any instruments enter the eye. This allows for reduced ultrasound energy (which can be damaging) and improved safety. Reports suggest that the procedure is up to 10 times more precise than when performed with manual blades and ultrasound. The computer guided accuracy is ideally suited for the latest premium intraocular lenses capable of improving spectacle free vision. Delaware is home to some of the finest medical and surgical care available. With this early introduction of leading edge technology, we are proud to usher in the next stage in modern eye care.

He was also named Top Doc in ophthalmology by Delaware Today Magazine six consecutive years, and has been an invited instructor at American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meetings.

Jeffrey Minkovitz, MD is an ophthalmologist with Eye Physicians and Surgeons in Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Minkovitz specializes in cataract and refractive surgery, and is one of only a few Delaware surgeons specially trained in corneal transplantation. He completed a cornea and refractive surgery fellowship at the renowned Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins. Previously, he graduated magna cum-laude from Harvard, earned his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts, completed internship at Harvard’s Mt. Auburn Hospital, and served his ophthalmology residency at Washington University. Dr. Minkovitz participated in the early research on Excimer Laser refractive surgery, and has offered this procedure to Delawareans since FDA approval in 1996, before Delaware had its own laser. educate. enrich. empower. As many of you may already know I am not a writer, but when I am proof reading many of the articles before I send them to my production department I can admit to you that I am inspired by a few of these articles, and yes, a few will even bring a tear to my eye. As I proofed the Blood Bank article I realize that we all make excuses for not doing certain things, and donating blood is definitely one of those items. Yet, it is so desperately needed, and one of those things that we shouldn’t procrastinate in doing. Then as I read the DE Hospice article I read the last quote, which I have heard so many times in my life: “Life is short. Enjoy what time you have. Don’t wait to settle things. If you have something you want to do on your bucket list, don’t wait!” Along with this quote I will add, “Remember that we will all be old in the future, and we think that we have plenty of time to plan for the later years of our life, but we don’t”. When we think of financial planning most of us, and I am one of the worst, think we are planning for retirement, but what we really should be planning for is “being safe and comfortable in our elder years”. I have a dear friend that I visited with in the last few weeks. He is not a young man, but he is a vital human being. I always knew him as a strong independent man, who could definitely take care of his own matters. But what I saw was a man that had been taken advantage of by a person that was supposed to be taking care of him when he was not able to take care of his financial matters. Thus, in his 80’s, when life should be peaceful for him, he is faced with his home in foreclosure, no means of transportation, and no one to make certain that he is ok. If this can happen to a man like my friend Tom, then it can happen to any of us.

or Rob Jerger, there is a deep satisfaction in giving his customers exactly what they need. “I love seeing that look on the customer’s face, when everything is set up and perfect,” the owner of Home & Garden Culture said. Jerger has been at the helm of HGC since 2008, after working for the previous owners for several years. The longer he worked there, the more he came to appreciate the level of detail that goes into every piece they sell. “I fell in love with the place,” he said. “It was very different from what I was used to seeing anywhere else. The amount of time spent on just one piece, from bringing it in to assembling it to installation is just amazing.” In the last five years, Jerger has fine-tuned his inventory, removing many interior accent pieces and focusing instead on exterior pieces – from pots and planters to statues and fountains of simple and complex design. He also tries to learn as much as he can about each piece, from what region a particular type of stone came from to what process is used to create a particular finish. With a background in exterior design and landscaping, and a love of fountains and water-based designs, Jerger enjoys working with his customers closely, getting to know them personally and getting a feel for what they like, before guiding them to the perfect piece. “I’ve had to talk people out of certain things, because I knew it wouldn’t be right for them,” he said. While he personally likes things in a natural setting, his appreciation of different styles – from classic to modern and everything in between – is what leads to the diverse selection at HGC. When not helping his customers or working on his latest endeavor, upcycling retail project Brandywine Accents, Jerger enjoys being outdoors and spending time with friends on the Brandywine Creek. hile the seasonal changes from winter to spring are often inviting and beautiful; nearly four million allergy By: Joan Coker, MD sufferers find the changes to be miserable. Allergic rhinitis is a collection of symptoms caused by the body’s reaction to small particles in the air called allergens. The effects of rhinitis are vastly underestimated, and have a significant impact on quality of life and healthcare costs. In the United States of America nearly twenty percent of people are affected to some degree by allergies. Nearly fifty percent of these patients suffer for greater than four months per year, with twenty percent symptomatic for at least nine months annually. The incidence of allergies has been on the rise over the past fifty years. This translates into allergic rhinitis being one of the main causes of absenteeism at work, and nearly two million school days are also missed annually. The common presentation of allergic rhinitis is nasal congestion, itchy eyes, sneezing, and a “nasal drip”. Patients may experience puffiness around the eyelids, ear fullness, and a scratchy throat. Those affected may have seasonal symptoms, but others will have symptoms year round. The allergic triggers for seasonal patients are rather straightforward. Tree pollens present in the early spring, followed by grasses that appear in the late spring and early summer. Late summer and early fall has weed season, while late fall is primarily molds that grow on the fallen leaves. Patients with year round, or perennial, symptoms may also be reacting to what are called the “epithelial” allergens, which are animal based. Dust mite, cat, dog, and other animal based allergens are included in this group. There are numerous other types of rhinitis that can mimic allergic rhinitis. It is therefore important that a thorough history and physical examination be performed. After this has been completed, allergy testing can be considered. Skin and blood testing are the two main methods to determine a patient’s allergies. Many offices offer skin testing that does not require needles. Once the causative triggers have been identified, various treatment regimens are available. Avoidance of allergens is the first line of defense. For instance, a key element for dust mite control is hot washing of bed linen every few weeks. Various treatments for allergic rhinitis are available. Nasal irrigation with saline can be effective. This treatment can be June/July 2013
educate. enrich. empower.
Allergic Rhinitis purchased “over the counter” and has very few side effects. Many antihistamines are available without a prescription and control itchy eyes and sneezing. The older generation antihistamines (Benadryl) while effective can create drowsiness. The newer generation antihistamines (Claritin, Allegra) are similarly effective and are “non-drowsy”. Prescription treatments including nasal steroid sprays are regarded as the first line and best treatment for nasal congestion and postnasal drip. If medical therapy fails or is not tolerated, allergy immunotherapy is considered. By changing how the immune system responds to an allergen, immunotherapy treats the primary cause of the problem. This method of treatment can be administered through weekly shots or daily drops under the tongue and can markedly improve symptoms, while decreasing the use of other anti-allergy medicines. Recent studies
have also shown that immunotherapy in childhood can decrease the development of asthma. Allergic rhinitis is a significant disease affecting millions of adults and pediatric patients. A thorough history, physical exam, and an accurate diagnosis are critical. Numerous treatment regimens exist and different patients require different treatment strategies. Joan Coker, MD is a practicing, board certified Otolaryngologist in private practice in Delaware since 2007. She is one of the physicians at ENT & Allergy of Delaware, which has four locations throughout New Castle County.

Did You Know There Is A “Lifetime Risk” Of Getting Cancer From A CT Scan? Proton spectroscopy shows normal prostate tissue and prostate cancer prior to biopsy
By Dr. Philip Chao
R
adiation exposure from CT scans may account for up to 2% of all cancers in the United States, but a new study finds patients tend to underestimate their lifetime risk. Dr. Cook-Shimanek, the study’s author states: “I would recommend that providers optimize their own understanding of CTrelated risk in order to best inform and educate their patients as they share in the decision to pursue such imaging studies” When patients were informed there might be a 2% overall lifetime risk of developing cancer from CT scans – they preferred not to have CT scans done. Most doctors do not inform patients of this risk. The recent study showed that not only did patients not know that MRI does not expose a patient to ionizing radiation, they actually thought MRI had more radiation than CT. So this basic misunderstanding is why doctors generally order too many CT studies and too few MRI studies. Dr. Chao cares about EVERY PATIENT AND HAS 27 YEARS EXPERIENCE in reading MRI studies. Please call him and ask questions. Our OPEN MRI is super HIGH quality. It sees abnormalities that the other 1.5T scanners in our state*(closed units) miss. In fact, MRI is also in some cases superior to CT. Just today, we saw two pelvic fractures in an elderly lady that were missed by CT. Our BEST OPEN MRI is superior to most CLOSED MRI scanners with the exception of four 3T MRI scanners in the state. We own two of the four 3T scanners and also have 7 years experience with 3T imaging. 3T MRI is the super highest

quality MRI you can get. If you come to our closed MRI scanner and can’t do the test because of claustrophobia, we are the only provider in the state who can instantly switch you over to our state of the art 1.5T 70 cm OPEN BORE MRI scanner. We have a super high quality OPEN MRI next to a closed MRI. There are only 4 3T MRIs in the state of Delaware. Ours is the only one which offers this quality for 500 dollars. Our 3T Trio is the only closed 3T next to a super high quality OPEN MRI. Our OPEN MRI pictures are guaranteed to be as good as other CLOSED MRI pictures. All units are ACR accredited.
Sacral fractures missed by CT scan as “light bulb” lesions. Your doctor may not be aware of this revolutionary scanning technology. Most of the research on this excellent technique can be found by a simple web search—for diffusion weighted imaging of cancer. The large cancer shown above was found to be malignant by this technique without any injections. The ultrasound and CT were a waste of the $1000 they cost. They were inconclusive. The MRI cost 500 dollars and was superior to both the CT and U/S without contrast. One could have saved 1000 dollars on this patient. Multiply that over 300 million people and you can see how good quality MRI can save us money.
Dr. Chao also wants to provide services which the other facilities don’t even offer. Things like metal subtraction imaging. Indirect arthrography. Super high resolution studies – which can only be done at 3T. Diffusion tensor imaging which picks up subtle brain trauma, alzheimers and autism. Proton spectroscopy. Prostate MRI. Prostate spectroscopy. 3T Breast MRI which is 100% sensitive for breast cancer. And we also offer our super high quality studies for only 500 dollars for non contrast studies. Our abdomen study for 500 dollars is able to pick up smaller pancreatic cancers, smaller liver cancers and includes diffusion weighted imaging for free. This new technique is up to 96% sensitive for cancer.
residency in Radiology at Brooklyn’s SUNY Health Science Center (19841987), where he became Chief Resident. He stayed on to complete a fellowship in Neuroradiology (1987-1988). Dr. Chao has been interested in MRI technology since its very beginning – the first MRI scan took place in 1981 while he was pursuing his medical studies. The University of Pennsylvania, where Dr. Chao was both a Body MRI Fellow (1988-1990) and a Neuroradiology Fellow (1989-1990), was at the heart of the development of this technology and Dr. Chao was able to work with pioneers in MRI on the first GE Signa 1.5T (tesla) scanner. His advanced research and specializations complete, Dr. Chao left the University of Pennsylvania for a position as Director of MRI in Wilmington, DE – a position he held for 14 years. Dr. Chao eventually left that position to create the best MRI center in Delaware, using the very latest technology: 3T MRI. While 3T (tesla) scanners have been used for scanning research patients since 2002, these advanced, more powerful MRI scanners only became available for clinical use in 2004. Dr. Chao worked hard to bring 3T technology to Delaware and in February 2007, MRI Consultants, LLC began operating the first 3T scanner in the State. 3T is the newest horizon for MRI.
Because of its extraordinary (100%) sensitivity to Breast Cancer, we generally prefer to do Breast MRI’s on our 3T MRI, but for someone who either will not fit, or who is extremely claustrophobic, our 18-channel 1.5T OPEN BORE MRI is a good alternative. We try to help everyone by using the safest MRI contrast. Our contrast agents are the safest in the world and cost a little more but we ABSORB THAT EXTRA COST BECAUSE WE CARE. The Single Dark Tooth Anna C. Giacalone, DMD Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry Education: • BS. Biology Chestnut Hill College
M
any adults are embarrassed by the appearance of a single dark front tooth. Most often the tooth was traumatized in their youth and needed to have a root canal. A blow to the face, a fall or auto accident may have either caused a tooth fracture exposing the nerve of the tooth (the pulp) or caused injury to the delicate blood vessels feeding the pulp. Either way the pulp dies.
it is easier to achieve a corrective shade when the tooth is closer to the shade of adjacent teeth to begin with. The longer the tooth has been discolored, the harder it is to neutralize the stain causing factors in the tubules. Younger people have wide open tubules which allow better penetration of the bleaching materials. They tend to get better results in less time for this reason.
The interior layer of the hard tissue of the tooth known as dentin is composed of multiple tiny tubules. When the pulp is injured there is bleeding into these tubules. The hemoglobin in the blood releases iron which forms a black compound when in the presence of hydrogen –sulfate. Another way the tooth becomes dark is from the proteins formed when the dying pulp tissue degrades.
There are many techniques for bleaching the single dark tooth. Bleaching substances applied to only to the exterior of the tooth tend to have less success. Most protocols involve obtaining access to the interior of the tooth through the same channel used for the original root canal. Other protocols employ both an internal and external application of the bleaching agent. One of the most favored internal bleaching techniques is commonly known as Walking Bleaching. In walking bleaching, a paste of 3% hydrogen peroxide and sodium perborate is placed in the interior of the tooth where bleaching occurs while the patient caries on their daily activities. The material is refreshed at weekly intervals until the desired result is achieved.
Choice of treatment for the cosmetic problem depends upon the darkness of the shade, the length of time the tooth has been discolored, and the structural integrity of the tooth. If there has been significant tooth structure lost from the original injury such as a fracture, or if there are large fillings in the tooth, a restorative solution is the best choice. This would involve fabricating a crown (cap). The crown would not only achieve color correction but also strengthen the tooth. In the case shown here I restored with crowns in addition to correcting the tooth position orthodontically. When the tooth is sound, contours and position pleasing, a more conservative approach is preferred. Also we like to avoid permanent crowns on very young patients who are still growing. In these instances bleaching is the treatment of choice. Bleaching the endodontically treated tooth is more involved than the bleaching of an entire smile with which most people are familiar.
There are some drawbacks to bleaching the endodontically treated tooth. One is that it is not always possible to achieve the desired result. Even when the result is achieved regression is a problem. That is, the tooth darkens over time. The degree and speed of regression is not predictable. The literature reports an initial success rate from 72-90%. Regression has been reported to be as high as 45%. In addition to disappointment with color correction, a more serious complication has been reported. Due to the toxicity of some bleaching solutions to the root and ligament of the tooth, erosion of the these structures, known as external resorption ,can occur. Usually this is seen when the stronger bleaching agents are employed.
The degree of darkness plays a role as does the length of time the tooth has been discolored and the age of the patient. Obviously
It is possible to make a single dark tooth blend beautifully in your smile. Allow us to help you arrive at the best care plan to do just that.

Your Hearing: Use It or Lose It What is Auditory Deprivation?
then act upon or store for future reference. This is best done in quiet undemanding situations. Think of it as training for the big time. Once you feel comfortable with the volume settings and hearing differently in quiet, you are ready for venturing out into more complex listening situations.
Auditory deprivation is prolonged reduction of sensory input to our ears, auditory nerve and hearing parts of our brain. Hearing loss reduces the transmission of sound through temporary blockage or permanent damage to the outer, middle or inner ear and thus reduces the electrical signals sent along the hearing pathways to the brain.
Hearing in Background Noise
Use It or Lose It!
By Catherine M. Marino, Au.D.
D
id you know that the longer you put off getting hearing help, the longer it may take you to reacclimatize to the sounds that you are currently missing? The lack of stimulation to the auditory system is called auditory deprivation. Putting off getting hearing help not only delays your reconnection to the world through your hearing and ability to communicate, but it also impacts how well you can make use of the sounds you hear, once they are restored. The good news is that today’s technology not only can help restore those missing sounds but also employ an adaptive process for reintroducing them. This allows the auditory system time to organize these new sounds for maximum benefit and minimum annoyance.
As a result of prolonged auditory deprivation, the auditory nerve and hearing pathways of the brain begin to lose their ability to faithfully carry auditory signals to the hearing parts of the brain. The auditory cortex may start to lose its capacity to interpret and process the incoming signals because of neglect, or may even use this important part of the brain for other functions. So the sooner a hearing treatment plan is initiated using properly programmed hearing aids, the faster and better you will be able to make use of all the many re-heard sounds. The plasticity of the brain is a good thing, but it can go both ways. (i.e., use it or lose it.)
Learn to Listen in Quiet First Many new hearing aid users think that they should only need to wear their hearing aids when they go out because it is in social situations that they have the most difficulty. The issue here is that you need to walk before you can run. The auditory system needs time to first hear individual sounds in order to recognize, analyze for significance,
When you are ready for more demanding listening situations, learn to focus on whom or what you want to hear. The hearing aids are designed to help you do just that. You can only listen to one conversation at a time anyway so put your attention there. The hearing aids are constantly analyzing the sound environment and in most cases are programmed to automatically switch on the directional microphones when it is noisy or there are multiple conversations going at once. Your audiologist will instruct you if you need to switch into this program manually.
Bottom Line The sooner you receive hearing help, the better the outcome!

Diagnosing and Evaluating Abnormal Uterine Bleeding have abnormal uterine bleeding. In the years immediately after a woman starts menstruating and again in the years before she enters menopause (defined as 12 months without a period), women may have irregular cycles due to the changes in hormonal regulation in the body. In addition, as women age, their chance of having a medical condition, structural lesion or other cause of irregular bleeding may increase. Regardless of age, any woman whose regular cycle suddenly changes is best advised to ask a doctor about it. Women who have any amount of bleeding after menopause should always seek an evaluation. By Gretchen Makai, M.D.
A
bnormal uterine bleeding is a common reason women see their doctors. Abnormal bleeding can occur at any age of life and has many causes – some are easily treated, while others are more serious. Women should consult with their health care providers if ever they have bleeding concerns. The first step in diagnosing abnormal bleeding is to recognize normal and abnormal menstrual patterns for women in their reproductive years. Normal menstrual cycles usually occur every 21 to 35 days; that is, a woman gets one period every three to five weeks. Bleeding that is more or less frequent than this is abnormal. In addition, bleeding between a woman’s regular cycles is not normal. Other important considerations include how much and how long a woman bleeds. Periods which cause women to bleed excessive amounts (technically, more than 80cc of blood per cycle) or that last more than seven days, are too heavy. Spotting-only or missing a cycle altogether may also require medical attention. There are times in women’s lives when they may be more likely to June/July 2013 www.TheWomensJournal.com
There are many causes of abnormal uterine bleeding, most of them benign. Pregnancy, changes in the hormonal cycle and structural abnormalities are common causes. Abnormal lesions in and around the uterus (for example, endometrial polyps or uterine fibroids) can interfere with the body’s natural way of slowing or stopping a woman’s period, resulting in excessive bleeding. They can also cause women to bleed between periods
and produce other disruptive symptoms. Numerous medical problems which affect the body’s hormones or overall health also cause changes in menstrual bleeding. Specific conditions which result in abnormal clotting may predispose women to heavy periods and medications that thin the blood may have similar effects. Certain infections in the uterus and cervix can trigger bleeding. Rarely, abnormal bleeding may be a sign of pre-cancer or Frank’s disease. Because there are so many causes for abnormal uterine bleeding, the evaluation of this problem starts with a thorough history by your care provider, including questions which address the issues above. He or she will ask specifically what changes are occurring, how long the changes have taken place and what other symptoms or signs a woman may have experienced. Other information which a doctor may ask a woman include her medical and surgical history, family history, pregnancy history, sexual history and her use of medications, including tobacco and alcohol.
Overall, abnormal uterine bleeding in women of reproductive age is usually benign, but it often can, and should be, treated. For these reasons, women are encouraged to seek care if they are having bleeding concerns. Any woman who has bleeding in menopause should see her doctor for an evaluation. Spider Vein Treatment: A Three-Tier Approach M
any patients with spider veins expect that a few injections will cure them. But even though they may look innocuous, Spider veins are often indicative of venous insufficiency in deeper and larger veins. Venous insufficiency results from defective valves within the veins allowing blood to flow backward, pool inside and distend them. For this reason, the underlying problem contributing to spider veins must be addressed first. Ultrasound examination should often be done to rule this out.
Pre and Post multi-modality treatments
Venous insufficiency at different levels may cause spider veins!
Tier I. Spider Veins (SV’s) - red / purple / blue fine lines appearing in starburst-like or web-like clusters at the surface of the skin, 1.2mm in diameter or less. Usually caused by venous insufficiency involving deeper veins. By Nadiv Shapira, MD, FACS, FACPh
Tier II. Reticular Veins (RV’s) - larger (1.5-2.5mm) blue/purple veins located beneath the skin. They may protrude and form areas of unattractive bulging clusters. SV’s are usually associated with incompetent RV’s. RV’s may be indicative of deeper vein’s insufficiency. Tier III. Deeper vein insufficiency may involve the great saphenous vein, small saphenous vein, accessory saphenous veins and/or perforating veins. They often result in varicose veins (enlarged, swollen, bulging, rope-like veins that occur on the surface of the legs).
Treatment tailored to the tier! Treatment options (office procedures done under local anesthesia with no “down time”):
1. Sclerotherapy – injection of SV’s with a chemical solution (sclerosant) which causes inflammation, makes the walls of the veins stick together, scar up and eventually reabsorb. Ideal for 0.8-1.2mm spider veins. 2. Ohmic Thermolysis (“VeinGogh”) - relatively new, done by placing a tiny needle and focusing heat energy (radio frequency) on the SV. Best for purplish SV’s 0.8mm or smaller. 3. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) - Effective for smaller veins in fair skin types and new tiny veins formed around treated areas.
When underlying venous insufficiency is not found (tier I), a combination of 1-3 modalities hastens and improves the resolution and the cosmetic results.
carefully evaluated my condition and explained what my treatment options were as well as what I could expect. Supported by an extremely caring and compassionate team, Dr. Shapira has gently and affectively treated my condition. My legs no longer ache, they don’t feel full and heavy, my ankles are much less puffy, a great deal of the discoloration is gone or reduced and they generally look and feel much healthier. I can’t thank Dr. Shapira and his staff enough for all of their care. -Jodi P. He recently established First State Vein and Laser Spa, utilizing minimally invasive treatment modalities for all forms of venous diseases, including spider veins, large and small varicose veins, leg swelling and skin ulcerations. He is a diplomat of the American Boards of Surgery and Thoracic Surgery, fellow in the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Thoracic Surgery and the American College of Phlebology. He is a member of Vein Affiliates and Vein Experts.
Common fan-like clusters, also at the inner aspect of the knee
A fan-like cluster commonly found at the outer aspect of the thigh. Typical to child-bearing women, associated with a lateral perforating vein.
4. Foam Sclerotherapy - Foam is made by mixing a sclerosant with C02. Applicable for sclerotherapy of RV’s. 5. Mini-Phlebectomy – Since sclerotherapy of bulging RV’s or SV’s may cause an unsightly staining, mini-phlebectomy (a delicate surgical removal of these bulging small veins) is the preferred treatment for these. 6. Endo Venous Laser Ablation – closure of incompetent tier III veins from the inside by heat emitted from a small laser fiber. 7. Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy - applicable for closure of incompetent perforating veins.
When underlying venous insufficiency is found (Tier II or III), treatment by modality #4,5,6 and/or 7 is done before addressing cosmetic concerns. Testimonials:
Dr. Shapira, who is a very personable man, took the time to thoroughly explain the entire procedure and reassured me of the benefits of proceeding with it. The procedure was quick, painless and without complication. Finally, I have the much-needed relief from the discomfort I had been living with for so long thanks to Dr. Shapira and his wonderful staff. - Alinda R. S. I have worked as a flight attendant for many years and was at the point where my legs ached every time I went to work. My ankles were always puffy and my legs discolored due to unhealthy veins. eart attacks and heart disease claim countless lives each year, in fact; more than one million Americans will have a heart attack this year – and heart disease is still the leading cause of death for women in the United States. Keeping the heart and blood healthy go hand-in-hand – the level of cholesterol in the blood is a major factor in your heart health. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the blood that is necessary for producing cell membranes and certain hormones, and supporting other body functions. Its bad reputation comes from the health problems that occur when there is too much cholesterol, also known as lipids, in the blood. When levels are elevated, cholesterol can enter the walls of any artery in your body. This will lead to narrowing of the diameter of the artery which places you at risk for chronic narrowing of a blood vessel or abrupt rupture of a cholesterol plaque leading to a heart attack or stroke.

Caring For Your Skin
By: Brenda Pavlic, CPhT

ccording to Wikipedia, our skin serves to protect in that it is an anatomical barrier from pathogens and damages between the internal and external body defense. It provides insulation, temperature regulation, sensation, and aids in the synthesis of vitamin D. However, to most of us (whether we admit or not) we don’t consider our skin for its complex function but rather as a barometer for how we see ourselves. As we grow older, our skin will begin to show signs of aging due to the passage of time, exposure to free-radicals and excessive sun exposure. While one may feel vibrant and young on the inside, her skin may reveal a different story altogether. Every year we spend billions of dollars on creams and lotions and potions that promise to rid
June/July 2013 www.TheWomensJournal.com
us of fine lines, crow’s feet, frown lines, laugh lines, wrinkles, loss in elasticity, puffy eyes, dark circles, age spots, blotchy skin, etc. While many of these products lack scientific research to back their claims, there are scientists around the world testing ingredients, new and old, for their effectiveness in reducing oxidative stress, restoring moisture, undoing damage, and promoting the production of collagen and elastin. Using products on the skin that contain clinically proven ingredients along with the proper diet for your skin type, regular exercise, adequate rest, and a combination of supplements can help to restore healthy, glowing, younger looking skin. The skin is extremely susceptible to free-radical damage, both from aging and exposure to elements in the environment. Aging skin will become wrinkled, rough, dry, dull, sag, and lack good healing response. In order to restore the skin’s healthiest appearance, one must repair the damage induced by free-radicals, provide anti-oxidant protection, restore moisture, enhance collagen, elastin and keratin production, and improve the skin’s ability to heal. Derived from the sugar cane, glycolic acid is considered one of the most rejuvenating fruit acids used in skin care. Hyaurlonic
acid is another important and innovative ingredient used due to its ability to attract and hold moisture. Both provide critical antioxidant protection to the skin and help to restore texture, color and moisture. Years and years of research have shown that vitamin C and E are especially important in preserving and repairing the skin. Green tea leaves contain polyphenols that are recognized as potent antioxidants and excellent scavengers of free-radicals. Idebenone and ubiquinone (forms of COQ10) help to prevent freeradical damage in the skin’s surface lipids. Pomegranate may help to reverse visible signs of aging by promoting the thickening of the epidermis. It also prolongs the life of fibroblasts, which are cells in the dermis which produce the skin’s structural fibers. These are just some of the active compounds being used in cosmeceutics. Even though pro-longed sun exposure can indeed do damage to our skin, some time in the sun is necessary in order for us to absorb proper vitamin D levels. The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorous. Vitamin D aids in absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones. Recently research has shown vitamin D may protect against osteoporosis, hypertension (high blood pressure), several auto immune diseases, and some cancers. It is recommended that we get approximately twenty minutes of sun exposure a day in order to maintain the proper blood level of vitamin D. It is important to mention that many of the products we use on a daily bases, such as body lotions, make-up, hand creams, etc. have sunscreens in them. This will affect how much D is actually being absorbed. Alternately, ingesting foods rich in vitamin D can also help to maintain the level needed for optimal health. The skin is the body’s largest organ and one of its most complex in function and structure. It is vulnerable to free-radical-induced stress that will manifest over time as wrinkles, dryness, thinning, discoloration and damage. Fortunately scientists are hard at work formulating and testing new and innovative ingredients that

Obstructive Sleep Apnea In Children Let’s do something about it before it is too late!
• E nlarged tonsils and adenoid tissues • Craniofacial abnormalities • Poor academic performance • Gasping for air • Unusual daytime behaviors • Darkness under the eyes
By: Dr. Grace Liu and Dr. Lewis Yu
O
bstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) can be found in every segment of population, even in children. One distinction to be made is that OSA in adults can only be managed, not cured. However, OSA in children can be cured. Consequence of airway obstruction is reduced oxygen available for the body. Oxygen deprivation is especially critical for the rapidly growing body and brain. Approximately 3 to 12 percent of children do snore. One to ten percent of children go on to develop various forms of sleep breathing disorder. The mild form is called Upper Airway Resistance Symptom (UARS). UARS causes brain to arouse from sleep to correct the problem then falls back to sleep again. This cycle occurs many times during the sleep; therefore, it destroys quality of sleep. Here are some symptoms often associated with UARS: • Hypertension • Fatigue • Cognitive impairment • Unrefreshing sleep • Chronic pain (often misdiagnosed as Fibromyalgia in adults) Some children do go on to develop full OSA. In OSA, there are more physiological symptoms. Some of the symptoms in children include: • Failure to thrive • Bed wetting • Obesity
June/July 2013
There are many other signs and symptoms associated with OSA. The list above is, by no means, a complete list. They are mentioned to illustrate how easy it is for the physicians to be misguided to wrong diagnosis. A child with OSA symptoms can be very easily misdiagnosed as other behavior disorders such as ADHD.
The most common cause of childhood OSA is enlarged tonsils and adenoid tissues. These are soft tissues that line the upper airway and the back of the mouth. Intuitively speaking, they simply “clog the pipe”. Surgically removing these enlarged tissues has proven effective in improving airway. Numerous studies have documented improvement in snoring, OSA, frequent urination, behavior and growth following adenotonsillectomy. Bony upper airway obstruction is the second category of causes. In this category, bony structures of the nasal/palatal physically impede airflow. Examples in this category are: deviated nasal septum, midface hypoplasia, high vault shape palate. Early intervention to correct these abnormalities, using orthodontics and surgery, would afford a child the chance of normal development; hence avoid living with airway obstruction when he or she is an adult. Diagnosis starts with
careful review of history. Unusual behavior problems are usually the first clue. Be sure to discuss with your physician and dentist about your child’s behavior pattern. If there is a definite sleep disorder pattern, the physician then can do a detailed examination of the airway. He would be looking for any soft or hard tissue blocking the airway. Should there be enough evidence from physical exam to support the OSA diagnosis, polysomnography (sleep test) is warranted to get the definitive diagnosis. Treatment options vary greatly depending on the cause and severity. For the most common cause of obstruction which is enlarged tonsils and adenoids, surgical removal is the first line of treatment.
When facial and palatal bone structure is the cause of constriction, orthodontic manipulation may be called for to expand the bony air passage. Childhood obesity is increasingly playing a bigger role in this disease. Healthy eating lifestyle is a prominent requirement in any treatment plan.
Early detection and treatment for childhood OSA allows a child to have normal development both physically and behaviorally/emotionally. Treatments at early stage of the growth curve tend to have greater and more permanent effects. This represents an opportunity to unlock a child’s growth potential.
Imagine how much better a happy, physically fit, socially well adjusted child will do in life, compared to a grumpy, often ill child? Your dentist is in a unique position to help in detect and treat airway issues. We see your children more often than your medical doctor. We get to know your kids intimately. This makes us great as the first line in detection. So, talk to your dentist about your child’s snoring. It may change his life. All About Smiles, PA. offers comprehensive general and cosmetic dental services, such as veneers, crowns, bridges, implants, whitening, as well as, Invisalign®. The practice also provides comprehensive neuromuscular(TMD) evaluations and treatment and smile makeovers.

Retinal Vascular Disease – Retinal Vein Occlusion By: Dr. Carolyn Glazer-Hockstein
A
n ancient proverb states “the eyes are the windows of the soul.” As ophthalmologists, the eyes are our window to the body’s circulation system. We see changes in the blood vessels of the retina that reflect what is occurring throughout the body. The retina is a thin sheet of nerve tissue in the very back of the eye. It has its own distinct blood supply and is one of the most metabolically active tissues in the body. The retina is extremely sensitive to changes that occur in blood vessels. Patients with common medical problems like high blood pressure and diabetes may develop loss of vision. This is related to the changes in blood flow through the retina that these diseases can cause. One of the most common retinal blood vessel diseases (or retinal vascular diseases) is a retinal vein occlusion. Retinal vein occlusion occurs because the veins in the retina become clogged or blood flow becomes interrupted. This blockage can result in permanent damage to the retinal veins. Most often a “thrombus” or blood clot causes the blood vessel occlusion. Patients experience painless vision loss from lack of blood flow to the retina, also known as “ischemia.” Another significant cause of vision loss is “macular edema” or swelling in the center of the retina. Risk factors for the retinal vein occlusions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, blood clotting disorders, and inflammatory diseases. People 50 to 60 years old are most commonly affected. Treatment of retinal vein occlusion begins by controlling any underlying medical problems. It is important for patients to maintain good blood pressure and cholesterol control. Patients with underlying clotting disorders may need to see a hematologist. While it is important for patients to optimally control their medical problems, there are several new treatments which can be targeted at the retina to help patients maintain their best possible vision. Treatments which specifically target the retina are important because no oral medications or eye drops help patients with retinal vein occlusions. Until recently, laser therapy was the only treatment for retinal vein occlusion. Laser therapy can decrease swelling within the retina which help to preserve vision and in some patients can result in visual improvement. Newer treatments include injections of medicine into the vitreous cavity (the gelatinous space in the eye). The most commonly used medications include steroids and vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors (VEGF inhibitors). VEGF is a protein that is abnormally high in the eye of patients with retinal vein occlusions. It causes abnormal new blood vessel growth (neovascularization) and causes blood vessels to leak fluid into the retina resulting in blurry vision. Patients typically require a series of anti-VEGF injections every four to six weeks. Another injectable medicine is triamcinolonc, a steroid which is very effective in decreasing swelling and blood vessel leakage within the eye. Osurdex is a longer acting steroid implant which can also be used to treat retinal vein occlusions. The Osurdex implant is inserted into the eye in the

office under local anesthetic and can be effective in the treatment of retinal vein occlusions. During the past few years many patients have benefited from these treatments for retinal vascular disease. With the new powerful arsenal of intravitreal medications, retinal specialists not only preserve vision but allow maximum visual outcomes. Treatment may require ongoing care but with these new therapies, we can help to prevent blindness.

Do I Need A Brow Lift?
Ari D. Abel, MD
Bryan D. Seiff, MD
Article By: Bryan D. Seiff, MD
The face undergoes a vast array of changes as we age: increased laxity of tissue, loss of fullness, descent of facial structures.
T
hese changes are especially noticeable in the delicate tissue around the eyes. This is the area to which we pay most attention, both in others and ourselves, and the thinner, finer tissue in this area betrays these aging changes more rapidly. Inelastic eyelid skin drapes over the eyelashes. Deflated brows sag and lose their youthful contour. Compensating forehead muscles cause deepening wrinkles. Evaluating and addressing these changes requires looking at and treating the upper face as a unit consisting of eyelids, eyebrows and the forehead. Many patients present with an initial complaint of “droopy” eyelids. Patients and physicians alike use the phrase “droopy lids” to describe a myriad of conditions. True “droopy” eyelids, or ptosis, occur when attachments between the eyelid elevating muscle and the structure of the lid weaken and stretch, causing the eyelid itself to descend over part or the entire pupil, obscuring the (Fig 1) patient’s vision (Fig. 1). Surgery can be performed to tighten these attachments and return the eyelid to its normal height. “Droopy” eyelids may also refer to increased laxity and redundancy of the eyelid skin, which then hangs over the eyelid and obscures the lid, the lashes, and possibly the pupil. This (Fig 2) condition is known as dermatochalasis (Fig 2). If there is enough redundant skin to cause visual obstruction, this excess skin can be surgically removed with a procedure known as a blepharoplasty. These changes in the aging eyelids may occur in isolation, or they may be related to corresponding changes in the forehead and brows. Aging and gravity can cause relaxation of the forehead and subsequent descent of the eyebrows. This allows the thicker brow tissue to lie over the thinner, finer eyelids. The resulting brow ptosis may worsen the appearance or severity of a patient’s “droopy” lids. When this occurs, removing eyelid skin alone may not fully correct the problem and can leave the patient with the
June/July 2013
continued appearance of redundant eyelid skin or a persistent visual field defect. In these cases, the eyebrows must be addressed and restored to their natural position. Several methods exist for correcting brow descent, each of which has distinct benefits and limitations. It is important for patients to delineate their aesthetic and surgical goals, and for the surgeon to explain the surgical techniques available to address these goals as well as what can realistically be achieved with each procedure. Some of these procedures include the removal of tissue from immediately above the brow, from the mid forehead, or from behind the hairline, thereby lifting the brow. A newer technique for brow elevation has evolved over the past decade that involves minimal to no tissue removal. Known as an endoscopic brow lift, this technique elevates the brow through small incisions placed behind the hairline. A scope is inserted through these small incisions for visualization, and dissection is performed using specially designed instruments. Once the brow and forehead are adequately loosened, the tissue is elevated and held in position using absorbable sutures or fixation devices. The brow heals in this higher position over the next several weeks, and the small incision sites virtually disappear behind the hairline. Benefits of the endoscopic technique are the smaller scars hidden in the hairline, the selective brow elevation without the need for removal of any hair or skin, the excellent control of both the glabellar region and temporal brow, and the rapid recovery time.

California-San Francisco.
Figures 3A and 3B show a patient who underwent an endoscopic brow lift. The improvement in appearance of her upper eyelids is due to elevation of the brows alone. No tissue was removed from her lids. Patients who complain of “drooping eyelids” may be a candidate for blepharoplasty or brow lifting and can have their vision and appearance improved by these procedures. A thorough evaluation by an oculofacial plastic surgeon can determine the underlying cause of a patient’s complaints and address them in a way that will leave the patient seeing and looking better than they have in years. If you think you may be a candidate for these procedures or would like more information, please contact Dr. Bryan Seiff or Dr. Ari Abel at the Abel Center for Oculofacial Plastic Surgery.

Get Back To An Active Life, Without Surgery Our Urogynecologists Can Help Prolapse can occur at any age. Most often, the muscles are weakened by childbirth and the pressure it creates, especially if the baby is big or labor is long or difficult.
By Howard B. Goldstein, D.O., MPH Howard B. Goldstein, D.O., MPH, is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He completed a fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ. He currently serves as the Director of Research and Education for the Division of Urogynecology.
M
any women suffer in silence with a leaky bladder because they believe nothing can be done to help them, short of major surgery. The truth is there are procedures that can provide relief without surgery. So, don’t hesitate to seek help from an urogynecologist, a doctor who is specially trained in both urology and gynecology. Often, women experience leaking when the muscles that support the bladder, the rectum and the uterus are stretched or damaged. When that happens, the muscles cannot properly support the organs and they begin to fall out of place and drop into the vagina. This condition is known as pelvic prolapse.
Women who have had Caesarean sections or have never given birth can have prolapse, as well. Other risk factors include menopause, smoking, a family history of prolapse, and obesity (defined as weighing 20 percent or more above your target weight). The risk also is greater for women who have had pelvic surgery, including a hysterectomy. Prolapse is not life threatening. But it has a dramatic impact on a woman’s quality of life because it usually results in urinary incontinence, making her leak urine when she sneezes, laughs or exercises. A simple device that has been around for many years, called a pessary, can change your life for the better. Here is what we hear patients say: “Now that I don’t worry about leaking, I can go out with my friends.” “I am exercising -- and losing weight!” “I didn’t realize how much better I would feel.”
Relief without surgery through structural support Safe, simple and effective. A pessary is inserted into the vagina to provide structural support. Most pessaries are made from non-allergenic silicon and come in many shapes and sizes.
Your urogynecologist is trained to make certain you get a perfect fit that provides the best solution for your particular issue.
Women can benefit from the use of a pessary in many ways. Some women insert the pessary before they go to the gym or head out for a jog, then remove it after their workout. Others wear a pessary only during the day. Another option is using the pessary for several days, and then removing it for cleaning. That said, not all women feel comfortable taking care of a pessary. Not to worry. There are a number of pessaries that can be used for two or three months at a time and maintained during regular visits to the doctor’s office.
Exercises to strengthen muscles and stop the leaking Women also can strengthen the muscles that have been stretched through a series of exercises. You might have heard of Kegel exercises, in which women repeatedly contract and relax those muscles.
The problem is that many women do not perform the exercises correctly. That can actually cause more urine leakage. By working with a physical therapist specially trained in women’s health, you can learn the proper way to exercise and strengthen the muscles. The first step to learning if there is a non-surgical solution for you is a conversation with your doctor, who will examine you and discuss various options for treatment. Together, we can come up with a plan to get you back to an active life.

Summer Blood Challenge Focuses On Proud Local Blood Donors
anticipate tremendous support from our dedicated, Delmarva donors who save local lives and have helped ensure a stable blood supply in this community for almost 60 years. We are grateful to everyone who takes the time to help others where we live.”

V
acations are planned, temperatures are heating up and our Summer Blood Challenge is in full swing—saving local lives one pint at a time! Blood Bank of Delmarva’s 11th Annual Summer Blood Challenge kicked off on May 20 and will run through Sept. 14. The challenge is meant to create extra incentive for people to give blood during the summer months. “The Summer Blood Challenge is a friendly, Delmarva-wide competition among employers and community organizations,” said Roy Roper, Blood Bank of Delmarva CEO. “The summer months are typically slower for blood donations and the competitive spirit and prizes help motivate donors as well as attract new members and donors.” Registered organizations will earn points based on blood donations, new members and more. The grand prize is a 2014 Mazda 6 courtesy of Martin Mazda. Second prize is a $2,000 TD Bank Visa Gift Card and third prize is a $1,000 TD Bank Visa Gift Card. Two $50 TD Bank Visa Gift Cards will also be awarded each week throughout the challenge.
This year, the Summer Blood Challenge is focusing on the dedicated Delmarva donors who go the extra mile to save local lives. One of the donors is Jonathan Waddell of Elkton, MD. Waddell has been a regular platelet donor for several years. In October 2011, the need for donors like himself truly hit home. Jonathan’s four-year-old son Gage was diagnosed with portal hypertension, a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by impaired blood flow to his liver. He ended up needing regular platelet transfusions prior to procedures.
I can help is to give blood,” says Taylor. “Giving blood is worth it in every way. It could be your mom, your dad, your sister, your brother who needs the blood. It could happen overnight. You just never know.”
“It was shocking that my own son would be a patient in need of platelets. You never think that your own child will need any type of transfusion,” says Jonathan. “It really made me think about the other children and adults who are able to live because of dedicated donors who give of themselves every day. You just never know when it is going to affect your life so deeply.”
For more information about the Summer Blood Challenge and giving blood, visit www.DelmarvaBlood.org or call 1 888 8-BLOOD-8
Taylor Jones, a 17-year-old junior at William Penn High School in New Castle, DE, has a very personal motivation for giving blood. “I had a brother who passed away when I was five. He had a rare brain cancer and died when he was only 17 months old,” says Taylor. “He had two brain surgeries in one year and needed large amounts of blood for both.”
Last year, a record 226 companies participated in the Summer Blood Challenge. This resulted in 11,790 blood donations and 1,985 new Blood Bank members.
While her brother went through treatments at a children’s hospital, a young Taylor saw many other ill children in the halls and playrooms. They were children who were her age and younger.

Why Choose Chiropractic Care For Families And Children?
By: Dr. Katie Schuler D.C.
T
Chiropractic care for children offers your family a solid foundation for wellness.
hroughout pregnancy, birth, and childhood, the chiropractic lifestyle offers choices and benefits for your greater health and well-being. The following articles will help you understand the importance of the chiropractic family wellness lifestyle. I personally was adjusted throughout all three of my pregnancies, and had successful natural deliveries. I have adjusted my children since birth and they are very healthy and vibrant children. More and more parents are seeking chiropractic care for their children. Many spinal problems seen in adults began as early as birth. Even so called “natural” birthing methods can stress an infant’s spine and developing nerve system. The resulting irritation to the nerve system caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections can often be traced to nerve system stress. As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic. As children begin to participate in regular childhood activities like skating or riding a bike, small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur. If neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nerve system will adversely affect the body’s ability to function at its best. The nerve system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune system. Any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. The chiropractic adjustment restores nerve system function allowing the body the ability to express a greater state of health and well-being.
June/July 2013
The Doctor of Chiropractic will take a case history and perform a chiropractic exam to determine if spinal subluxations exist. Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to fit a child’s size, weight, and unique spinal condition. They are both gentle and specific to the child’s developing spinal structures. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.

“I am so happy I discovered Dr. Katie and chiropractic care! I started getting regular adjustments for headaches and burning back pain related to stress from work. I quickly learned the numerous benefits of chiropractic care to maintain overall health and wellness. I continued to receive regular adjustments throughout two pregnancies and attribute smooth deliveries and decreased back pain to the care I received from Synergy. Currently my toddler and infant recieve regular adjustments as well. Chiropractic care has helped them with reflux, constipation and ear issues naturally. As a parent, I feel reassured that I am exposing my children to a natural medicine vs. the standard drugs.” ~ Jennifer Trieval – school teacher “Chiropractic care continues to improve my life! I have significantly more range of motion in my neck and much, much less pain! There are stretches of time when I am pain free, and my dancing is better and easier too! The Power of Yoga
By: Heather Shafer, CYT Director, Kaya Wellness & Yoga
“Which class is going to challenge me more? I really want to feel the burn.”
S
creeeeech…wait, stop…. This is a tale-tale sign that someone needs yoga. Not more exercise and more challenging poses, but good ‘ole yoga. Yoga that encompasses so much more than asanas (physical postures). Yoga that creates change; emotional, spiritual, & physical. Yoga that takes you deeper, without creating injury. In the US yoga has come to mean asanas or fitness. If yoga is limited to a physical workout, you are missing what yoga is truly about and diminishing what traditional yoga has to offer. Yoga is translated as “yoke” or “union”, describing the integration of mind and body to create a greater connection with one’s own pure, essential nature. It encompasses the spiritual, emotional, & physical bodies. Trying to sweat your way into a leaner form rarely works without addressing the emotional and spiritual bodies. For true transformation, all of these bodies must be prioritized & balanced, which involves drawing your yoga off of your mat, & into every aspect of your life. Once inducted into this yogic philosophy, the term “Live Your Yoga” will allow you to flow with your life with much less effort. I have experienced and witnessed in my students a myriad of benefits from a deeper yoga practice more than I could have ever imagined from exercise alone. Physically: increased flexibility, increased muscle strength & tone, improved energy & vitality, weight reduction, controlled blood pressure, improved sleep,

enhanced balance, injury-free muscles and spine Spiritually: improve and deepen your relationship with the world itself, mindfulness & an appreciation of your life for what it is right now, connect to your true self, find that place of stillness within yourself, closer to Spirit Emotionally: balancing hormones leads to emotional stability & more balanced moods, relieve depression & anxiety, reduced cortisol (cortisol is known as the “stress hormone” because it is activated when you are stressed”, create a sense of calm & peace Anyone who has exercised knows that simply exercising will aid in physical & emotional balance, but when layered with proper yogic breath, intention, & energetic control, exercise, and everything else in your life is transformed into the sacred art of yoga. Washing the dishes, running, doing laundry; all of these have the potential to be yoga. So experience yoga in a spiritual space and learn the sacred art of yoga so that you can carry this off of your mat and transform all of the areas of your life. This attitude of learning, enjoying and growing from every experience that life throws at you translates to an amazing outlook in everyday life outside of the Yoga studio. It allows you to handle just about anything life brings with a sense of calmness, confidence and true inner peace. Let go of your conditioning that a workout has to be painful to be effective to ensure that you are not diminishing the full potential of your yoga practice. Kaya is dedicated to creating a sacred space to encourage students to find their True Self. Publisher’s Note: “When I first thought about taking Aerial Yoga I was assuming that it would be hard, and that there was no way that I could do any of it (I am almost 60 yrs. old). I also assumed that I had to be really strong and limber. I was totally wrong: From the very beginning it was fun, enjoyable, & allowed me to go in to yoga poses that I never had been able to do in regular floor yoga. ~PJ

Summer Beauty Secrets
used to darken the skin.
By Lisa Torbert, MS, QRA Practitioner, Hypnotherapist Yoga Instructor
Secrets behind the perfect tan You know them when you see them. They stand out from the crowd with their perfect glow, looking effortlessly happy. Before torturing yourself with envy, realize the truth. Chances are, their appearance is calculated and they paid to earn their sun-kissed glamour.
Summer beauty pros say wearing light-colored clothes makes tanned skin pop. Bronzing, one of the summer-ready services offered at Heather’s Holistic Health, is highly recommended because it is the most successful way to achieve a natural and streak-free look. Tanning beds are out of the question for the health-minded because of the harmful UV rays
To dramatically change your face without spending too much, book an eyebrow wax appointment with a clinical aesthetician, like the one found at Heather’s Holistic Health. Eyebrows frame the face. A quick way to showcase eyes, which are usually the first things people notice, is to give eyebrows an attractive arch to highlight eye shape. Thick eyebrows emphasize foreheads and give the illusion that eyes are smaller than what is accurate.
Do not confuse bronzing with spray tan, which most places offer because it requires less work and attention to detail. At Heather’s Holistic Health, our clinical aesthetician ensures uniform application in even the trickiest areas by solely using a sponge to hand-apply bronzer. Spray tan services do not guarantee such quality. Their method runs the risk of streaks and product accidentally landing on the soles of feet and hands.
When the sun is out, the fashions are daring. Don’t let unwanted hair scare you from the tank top or bikini you dreamed of strutting. We recommend waxing to those who want affordable and lasting results. Waxing is far superior to shaving because waxing results last on average two to four weeks and shaving results last a few days. For some unlucky individuals, shaving results
The best bronzing results are due to exfoliating in a warm shower before the appointment because dead skin cells prevent even-toned color. After the appointment wait at least six hours before showering to let the bronzer fully react with the skin. Although most spa bronzing results last from five days to a week, results last longer through proper moisturizing, refraining from sweat-producing exercise and tanextending lotion. Beauty in the details: our nails A little known secret to showcasing a tan is applying bright neon or soft pastel nail polish to fingers and toes to compliment a bronzed glow. Go beyond the corner nail salon and treat yourself to a spa manicure and spa pedicure at Heather’s Holistic Health, where the services are performed in your own serene private room. Massage and paraffin wax are included in the services for the ultimate luxury experience.
This is because shaving does not stop a hair follicle from growing, while waxing does. When hair is removed from the follicle, it takes at least a week to grow back. Another unknown reason professional waxing is more effective than at-home shaving is the ability to adapt to the different directions skin grows. Underarm hair can grow in multiple directions. Improper hair-removal, such as shaving, or at-home waxing prevents lasting and hairless skin.

Prenatal Yoga
By: Judi Block, RYT Kaya Wellness & Yoga Practicing prenatal yoga brings awareness to both mother and child and the amazing changes happening in the body. It prepares a woman to give birth actively and instinctively, building trust in her body’s wisdom while bringing forth a sense of calmness, confidence and focus. Yoga encourages us to go within, bringing quiet to the mind so we can listen to our body’s cues. It connects us to the intuitive and innate wisdom within each of us. Prenatal yoga helps to alleviate some of the common physical discomforts of pregnancy – fatigue, lower back pain, leg cramps, upper back and shoulder tightness, sciatica, nausea and indigestion. The poses strengthen and open the body for birth, keeping the muscles strong and toned yet flexible. It helps with physical balance as the body’s center of gravity continues to shift. Modifications are available to suit each pregnancy stage or to adjust to how the woman’s body is feeling week to week. Pranayama or breathwork is essential for relaxation. Maintaining deep and even breaths increases the intake of oxygen and helps reduce stress and anxiety. It calms the mind and body to develop a greater sense of inner focus and contentment. When the breath is coordinated with rhythms of contractions, the increase of oxygen provides the stamina to ride the sensations while restoring energy during the breaks in between. June/July 2013

“You relax naturally & easily You trust your body & your mind Moment by moment you know exactly what to do” ~Affirmation from Judi’s class
The yoga postures in conjunction with the breath are tools to keep us in the present moment - without attaching to the past or grasping for the future. This is vital for the journey of labor as you work through each individual contraction with dignity and a calm focus. When a contraction is over it is time to leave it in the past and rest. While each contraction is a step closer to meeting the baby face to face, it is not the time to get lost in thoughts of how long that will be. The laboring is done right there in the present moment with the birthing woman feeling empowered in the ability to tap into her vast inner resources. Two important parts of a prenatal yoga class happen in the few minutes before class begins and ends. Before class the women chat about how they are feeling, their prenatal visits, the latest baby gear, etc. The supportive community they create is beneficial as feelings are validated and friendships are made. At the end of each class there is a relaxation and reflection time. This quiet and peaceful time is an opportunity for the mom-to-be to recharge, reenergize and connect with her baby along with her own true nature and intuition which will guide her on the amazing path into motherhood.

Pilates Helps You Get In Shape & Stay In Shape means sticking to a plan even when you don’t think you have time or you’re not in the mood. The benefits always outweigh the disadvantages, and most people feel much better after they have finished a healthy and challenging workout.

hen people shed the winter clothes, chances are that some look in the mirror and feel regret: regret for not working out more and regret for eating or drinking too much. Then when it’s time to put on shorts or a tank top, the mirror doesn’t lie. Forget about shopping for a new swimsuit. There’s no need to step on the scales if last year’s summer clothes don’t zip. What’s a girl to do? Try Pilates. That doesn’t mean buy a DVD and do a half hour every now and then when you have time. Fitness takes personal commitment to a goal, and that

Here’s an opportunity to get help and support from a personal trainer. Before teaching anyone Pilates, personal trainers at Forever Fit Foundation first evaluate a new client to consider things such as physical limitations, prior injuries, and levels of strength and flexibility and fitness goals. Then, it’s time to train. Pilates, for the uninitiated, is an exercise program created by a man named Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, and it has endured as a reliable and effective training method. He developed a series of movements that, when performed properly, involve and strengthen both body and mind. In addition, classic Pilates exercise are performed on apparatus that uses springs to create resistance, so in essence,
Pilates movements develop both strength and flexibility. A trained teacher also knows how to modify these exercises to meet individual needs, from beginner to the experienced client. The beauty of Pilates training is that while it focuses on strengthening the core, these exercises offer a lot of benefit for time and money invested. Pilates is quite complex and offers a variety of exercise that can be performed on the mat as well as on apparatus, and it doesn’t take long for clients to notice improvements. Don’t stop now. Those springs that provide resistance, similar to resistance offered by weights, can be adjusted as students become stronger. Pilates is an exercise system that is embraced by the dance community, not only for injury rehabilitation, but also because those same exercises improve posture and increase flexibility. An additional benefit is that practicing Pilates helps you become more comfortable in your own body through subtle changes that help you feel more

confident and secure. Pilates will become a welcome part of your life as your clothing fits better, you start to look and perform daily functional activities better, and you are able to release tension in your back and neck through the same movements that shape, sculpt and tone. Your muscles that were once covered with, well, flab, have become longer, stronger and leaner. Welcome to Pilates! Nancy Hawkins Rigg is the founder and owner of Forever Fit Foundation, a personal training business specializing in Pilates, Gyrotonic, Gyrokinesis, Yamuna Body rolling and sportspecific training. Forever Fit Foundation accepts clients at three sites: Dover and Lewes and Mendenhall Station, Pa., just over the Delaware line. A certified athletic trainer, she earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware and her master’s degree in exercise science and sports medicine from Miami University in Ohio. et’s start off by acknowledging that I detest over-generalizations and “umbrella cures”. What does this mean? It means that there are various causes for similar syndromes, so while massage may be beneficial for many depressed and anxious patients, it will not be the cure-all for everyone. Now that my disclaimer is out of the way, let’s discuss our brains. While the initial creation of our physical brain is based on genetics, our life actually alters its shape. This is the neurological foundation behind “practice makes perfect”. As we practice something – be it math, science, hockey, or dance – the neurons in our brains are assisted by astrocytes and oligodendrocytes to create new axon pathways: new “shortcuts” in our mind. With more shortcuts, we gain a tendency for that particular activity to become second nature or habit for us. Many people see this and agree, to some extent, that it all makes sense. For whatever reason, most people leave this phenomenon of the brain right there: with sports and such. Why not with emotions? The reality is that similar pathways in the brain, which control everything else, create an emotion; so yes, you can edit your emotional self as well. Just as with anything else, it takes hard work, dedication, and the acceptance that change will eventually occur. No one lifts weights without expecting to eventually see their muscle tone change, right? June/July 2013 www.TheWomensJournal.com Www.TheWomensJournal.com
The first step that you can start with right now is to use positive affirmations. The easiest way to do this is to ask yourself, “What are three things that I feel crappy about right now?” Let’s say that you feel tired, unhappy, and have no confidence. Write them down, then write their opposites next to them, and repeat to yourself, “I am energized, happy, and confident.” It may seem cheesy, but with repetition and experiencing (imagining) the positive emotions, it works. The next step is training your brain to be quiet, accept things, and embrace endorphins at a natural rate. Many clinically depressed individuals are so because their brain will not produce the level of endorphins required to achieve a sense of happiness or contentment. (Remember, many, not all). Massage therapy jump-starts the production of many “happy hormones”, including oxytocin and endorphins, and gives us a sense of peace.
our goal. Accepting that life is just life – and it is never good or bad – simply life with some pleasant or unpleasant isolated instances may be one of the healthiest ways to go about your days. Speak with your psychological healthcare provider first, and then come visit me for a massage. After your first session, we’ll evaluate how you feel and decide on a regimen that will work best for you and your wallet. You may want to begin intensely, with a massage or more per week, and slowly taper off to naturally fitting monthly routine designed just for you. Pete Lerza is the Spa Manager at Kaya Wellness & Yoga in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Pete is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Certified in Holistic Pathology. Pete also serves on the Program Advisory Committee
The reasons that massage provides this benefit for us are numerous, so I won’t go into detail here, but it is also worth noting that massage decreases cortisol levels. Cortisol is a stress hormone which is great for fight or flight situations, but completely unnecessary during the typical day. Cortisol increases heart rate, increases blood pressure, and creates blood sugar imbalances just to name a few unfavorable traits.

Silence
By Dean Roles
M
ost people are afraid of it, even fewer people practice it and least of all are people who apply it properly. Without the silence between the notes, music is just noise. You must have that space (silence) between the notes to create the beauty of music. This analogy of the art of creating music and comparing it to working with horses is one of the effective comparisons I have come up with. If you compare a cue on a horse to a note and compare the silence with the time between the cues, this analogy alone can steer you into the proper mind set when working with a horse. When humans find proper balance between the silence and noise, miracles happen, whether it's music, horses or life in general. So why if it’s so simple, why is it so hard? The answer is in the first sentence of this article, fear. Horses are large, powerful, nonremorseful, and not persuaded by your superficial self. Fear destroys beauty, relationships and life in general. In reality there is only one cure for this plague of fear that destroys... FAITH! Faith in GOD, faith in yourself, faith in your horse is what is needed. Faith can always trump fear. Once you find faith, you find the ability to be still (silent), calm, cool and relaxed. Once found, this state of faith must be exercised in a continuous manner. The exercising of faith is the practice part of silence. How to apply it properly (the least of all part), well that takes wisdom, but I can tell you that just being quiet is not silence. Lack of fear is not faith, the truth is; faith is not even necessary without fear! And to return to our analogy, not making notes will not produce beautiful music! It takes both! Noise and silence to produce the song of life! It is because of fear we exercise faith and the exercise produces abilities and those abilities produce a joyful noise, the perfect song.
Testimonial I met Dean Roles during the summer of 2010. Since then, my life and my horse’s life have changed in a positive direction. I am no longer afraid to ride my once anxious, nervous, confused Tennessee Walker named Tony. Building a close and solid relationship of trust and understanding with your horse is Dean’s foremost goal. He asked me at our first meeting what I wanted to achieve with my horse. My reply was that I wanted a safe and more relaxed horse to ride. Thus began our first month of training. When I brought Tony to Dean’s facility, I thought Tony had good ground manners. Boy was I in for a surprise. Dean informed me that Tony was the leader and I clearly was not. Dean worked with Tony for the first couple of weeks while I observed his techniques with both groundwork and riding skills. I didn’t miss a day of training…..five days a week. Then it was time for me to get up in the saddle. I was a nervous wreck with lost confidence and I am sure Tony knew it. Dean certainly did. But we worked through my fears with baby steps. By the end of the next two weeks, I had regained my confidence and could not wait to get Tony back home and ride him in the ring. What a different horse in just four weeks…..much calmer, less anxiety, and overall just a happier horse. Winter came and went, as did summer whereby I was unable to ride due to a back injury (non-horse related). However, this past August, Dean came to our farm and my training resumed through the end of October. His techniques and ability to finesse a horse with what appears to be little effort is nothing less than amazing. I cannot describe how happy I am that I chose Dean Roles to be my trainer. He is a confident leader in the horse arena and is teaching me to be a confident leader with Tony. If Dean were to ask you what are the two most important things you are in charge of with your horse, you would quickly reply “speed and direction.” Once you have control of those two key elements you will be on your way to a happy and safe riding experience. Thank you, Dean, for everything you have taught me and for everything you will continue to teach me. ~ Pam Nebel, Harrington

Chemicals You Don’t Think About: Water Facts Every Organic Consumer Should Know M
ore and more people are realizing that By: buying organic Maria Williams food just makes sense. The astounding amount of pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals lingering in and on our food is wreaking untold havoc on our systems and long-term health. Yes, it costs a little more, but it’s a small price to pay for a longer, healthier life for ourselves and our children. We are taking a stand for our food by buying organic. It’s the same philosophy we should be applying to our water. To take control of your water, it’s your personal responsibility to ensure it’s free from chlorine, chloramines, lead, and other contaminants. To be sure, the water authority treats the water so that it doesn’t cause death and disease, but it is basically the equivalent or non-organic food. The water can be vastly improved without the chemicals in it. The only way to achieve this is by filtering your own water. A whole house water filter gives your entire home water free of chlorine, cholaramines, heavy metals, and more. Just like purchasing organic foods, it costs a little more to filter your water. But did you know a whole house water filter will filter all your home’s water for less than $3.00 a week? That’s about 2-3 bottles of bottled water. And of course, no bottled water waste means it’s way better for the environment.
The Top 7 Reasons to Filter ALL Your Water in Your Home • Prevent Cancer
According to Prevention Magazine, it’s the number one way to prevent cancer. “You’ll reduce your exposure to known or suspected carcinogens and hormonedisrupting chemicals. A new report
from the President’s Cancer Panel on how to reduce exposure to carcinogens suggests that homefiltered tap water is a safer bet than bottled water, whose quality often is not higher — and in some cases is worse — than that of municipal sources, according to a study by the Environmental Working Group.”
contaminants such as fluoride, which whole house water filters are not designed to remove.
• Better Tasting Water Encourages More Drinking
Since most Americans are chronically dehydrated, it’s a good idea to drink enough water each and every day. Experts say we should drink half our body weight in ounces each day. So if you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink 75 ounces per day. Or at least strive to.
• It’s the Stuff You Can’t See
Most contaminants in your water are not visible. This photo here was taken after about 6 months of use on city water. Perhaps you assume that only well water has significant dirt and debris in it, but judging by this image, that’s not the case. This is just one filter out of the many we receive from customers with very similar or worse condition. Many even catch large pieces of debris – such as insects, worms, paper, rocks, and more.
• Well Water Carries Even More Risks
Because well water is not regulated, you are responsible to ensure it is safe. Well water should be tested at least annually by a certified lab. This may cost several hundred dollars a year, but it’s worth knowing that there are no bacteria such as e-coli, coliform or other harmful bacteria in your water.
• Last But Not Least, Peace of Mind
If you don’t filter your water, then your body becomes the filter. Your liver, kidneys and colon will filter the water when it’s not filtered prior to consumption or being consumed.
Picking The Right Filter For You Is Easy Because we’re an online business, we pride ourselves in cool tools used to educate you and help make your
selection much easier. If you have city water, you can use our “water wizard” which helps you choose the right filter for your home. Just visit: www.puriteam.com/ water-wizard/
Maria Williams, The Clean Water Mom, serves over 18,000 customers nationally with whole house water filtration systems from Kennett Square, PA.
Visit online at www.cleanwatermom.com or www.puriteam.com. “You Have a Great Product and We’re So Glad We Purchased It.” I wanted to let you know that we are loving our whole house water filter. Our water tastes wonderful! There’s no more running to the little filter at the kitchen sink, which always seemed to need replacing, and which worked poorly after a while anyway. Also, we can shower without the awful smell and skin-irritating problems of our heavily-chlorinated city water. ~ Ann Low, Georgia
• We Do More With Water Than Drink It
Why do we encourage whole house filtration? Because we do more than just drink our water. We shower, bathe, brush our teeth, launder our clothes and more. Filtering all this water is your best bet for healthy water in your home – for all purposes. Even at 3am in the bathroom.
• Maintain Only One System
A whole house filtration system will eliminate the need for multiple filters such as shower filters or separate drinking water filters. However, some choose to opt for additional filtration of inorganic

Does Your Child Need Tutoring? Article By: Dr. Raymond J Huntington, Co-Founder of Huntington Learning Center
E
ven with summer in full swing, many parents cannot take a vacation from worry. They are often caught between concerns about last year’s final report card and their child’s readiness for school in the fall. Not every child who is struggling academically needs summer school, but many parents are considering another option: tutoring. How do you know if your child can benefit from tutoring? As any parent knows, what children say and what they mean are not always the same. Sometimes, “I’m stupid” really means, “I need help with school.” When children are having difficulty learning, parents often become frustrated because they don’t know where to turn or how to help their child. The staff at Huntington Learning Center offers the following guidelines to determine if your child needs tutoring. • At report card time or during parentteacher conferences, a teacher or school counselor has indicated that your child is having difficulty in one or more subject areas. • Your child’s grades have been dropping regardless of how much time he or she spends on studying and doing homework. • Your child experiences extreme anxiety before tests and/or resists going to school in the morning. Both physical and behavioral problems may be exhibited by a child with learning difficulties. • Your child shows signs of lacking motivation and confidence, and loses interest in learning, even in a subject he or she used to enjoy. • Your child dreads going back to school in the fall. Children who exhibit any of these warning signs may benefit from tutoring. The Newark Huntington Learning Center offers diagnostic testing, individualized instruction, and personal attention to help students build skills, confidence, and motivation.
Parents who want additional information are encouraged to call the Huntington Learning Center in Newark at 302-737-1150. About Huntington:

They told her that her ACT score was what really put her over the top…I know Courtney deserves the majority of the credit for all her hard work and dedication throughout her school career, and the extra effort she made this summer to take Huntington’s prep course and do additional homework over her break, but I really want to thank the teachers who worked with her and you, specifically, for suggesting she take the ACTS. I hadn’t ever considered that test, and no one at her school mentioned it either.

L
ife decisions are big. They can change your life, of course. So when you are getting ready to make one of these big life decisions, it is helpful to look to those who have made the same decision before you and can offer insight on what to expect. That is why we tracked down Rebecca Bunting, a recent graduate of Dawn Career Institute’s Massage Therapist program and Personal Fitness Trainer program. We wanted to find out what her experience was like and what advice she has for individuals considering careers in massage therapy or personal fitness training. First, let’s get to know Rebecca a little bit better. “I graduated from Dawn Career Institute in January 2012 from the Massage Therapist program and the Personal Fitness Trainer program. I was fortunate that I was able to go to school during the day for personal fitness training and at night for massage therapy. I now have a client base of more than 500 clients through my “Tranquility Base Massage” massage studio, and I am currently enrolled in Wesley College’s Pre-Med program in Medical Technology. Through my education, I hope to tie in massage therapy to both pre-op and post-op patients because there are many benefits to this practice.”
The Massage Therapist program
at Dawn Career Institute focuses on a holistic approach to healthcare and opportunities for alternative healthcare practices through intensive massage therapy training. Training in human anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, medical terminology, health benefits of massage, and pharmacology for massage therapists is part of each student’s course responsibilities.
The Personal Fitness Trainer program focuses on preparing
students for a career in personal training by providing hands-on, physical training. Personal fitness trainers are often tasked with performing exerciserelated assessments, designing safe and effective fitness programs, and implementing safe weight loss and/ or weight gain programs. With these program descriptions in mind, we asked Rebecca what was one of the biggest benefits of both the Massage Therapist and Personal Fitness Trainer programs at Dawn Career Institute. “People often associate massage therapy only with spas and relaxation techniques, and personal fitness with working out. At Dawn Career Institute, I realized that I was more interested in the medical side of both of these practices. I work at a chiropractic office two times per week, and I also have built a client base of more than

500 clients. I am very interested in abdominal massage. It is more than massage relaxation, and there are more areas to explore in a variety of fields. In both of these programs, there isn’t just one career outcome.” Some of the medical benefits of massage therapy can include relief from anxiety, headaches, insomnia related to stress, soft tissue strains or injuries, sports injuries, and joint pain. Massage therapists are not limited to one professional environment but can work in a variety of settings like Rebecca does, including physicians’ offices, chiropractic clinics, health and medical spas, physical therapy or medical clinics, athletic or sports clubs, beauty salons, and more. Personal fitness trainers can find employment in fitness centers, physical therapy facilities, spas, universities and collegiate athletic programs, corporations with health and wellness programs, or become self-employed. Finally, we asked Rebecca what advice she would have for someone considering a future in massage therapy or personal
fitness training. This is what she left us with: “What advice would I give to potential students? I would tell them that before you enroll in a specific program, make sure you look indepth at the program and talk with an admissions counselor. Sit in on a class and visit the campus for a day. Make sure you have the facts and understand the program, so you don’t have to transfer into another program or waste any time. Different programs require different course training. The teachers are always there to help you, but I think it is helpful to know what you are getting into ahead of time.” Thanks to Rebecca for sharing her experience at Dawn Career Institute as a graduate of the Massage Therapist and Personal Fitness Trainer programs. If you are ready to make a big life decision and enroll in one of these programs, please contact Dawn Career Institute today for more information! New Brain Balance Center Opens In DE “We Don’t Address The Symptoms. We Address The Cause.”
T
he Brain Balance Program® provides an intensive, after-school program that brings hope to families of children with academic, social and behavioral challenges. It helps these children reach their fullest potential through non-medical, brain-based programs. Children who benefit from the Brain Balance Program® do not always have a diagnosis, but often exhibit characteristics of Learning, Behavioral, and Processing Disorders among others. The Brain Balance program is unique in many ways. We don’t just work with a child’s strengths or provide strategies to compensate for a weakness; we address the fundamental problem. At the core of these disorders is a desynchronized processing speed or imbalance between the two hemispheres of the brain, resulting in a Functional Disconnection. After completing a comprehensive sensory motor and cognitive assessment of each child’s body and brain function, we identify the imbalance in the way that the child’s brain processes information. These imbalances can then be corrected by integrating individualized sensorymotor, physical, and cognitive activities with simple dietary changes to optimize brain function and reduce or eliminate negative symptoms and behaviors. Each child’s program is unique to his or her struggles. The Comprehensive Assessment is a series of tests designed to identify the areas of the brain that might have disrupted connectivity, or what we at Brain Balance call Functional Disconnection Syndrome, causing behavioral, social and/or academic issues. If the child has Functional Disconnection Syndrome, then a pattern will emerge during the assessment indicating where in the child’s brain these disruptions are located. Some of the sensory-motor functions tested include: Primitive Reflexes, Motor, Auditory, Visual, Proprioception, Gait, Core, and many others. Additionally, the cognitive portion of the assessment incorporates a variety of reading, writing, math and listening skills. www.TheWomensJournal.com

Job Opportunities In The “Big Data” Field
By: Nora Riehl Zelluk
oogle executive Eric Schmidt once famously G announced, “There were 5 exabytes of information created between the dawn of
civilization through 2003, but that much information is now created every two days.” Schmidt’s arithmetic has since become a matter of debate but his illustration vividly captures the “big data” phenomenon, and experts agree that the volume, velocity and variety of the data generated every second in this information age will continue to grow exponentially. When harnessed by statistics and analytics, big data has the potential to revolutionize how people solve problems, predict demand and improve organizational efficiency. Businesses individualize their customer pitches based on past purchases and demographics; economists look for shifts in consumer confidence; epidemiologists analyze Google search statistics to pinpoint flu outbreaks.
However, as pointed out in a recent issue of Harvard Business Review, “The shortage of data scientists is becoming a serious constraint in some sectors.” The article went on to observe that “Statistics are important, but many of the key techniques for using big data are rarely taught in traditional statistics courses.” The shortage of data scientists make “big data” a great career opportunity in a tough economy. Plus, skills in data analytics can be a boon to small business owners. The University of Delaware Division of Professional and Continuing Studies’ Certificate in Analytics: Optimizing Big Data introduces the tools needed to analyze large datasets, focusing on how to translate the results into informed business decisions and improved business performance. The program is directed at professionals in any field who deal with large amounts of data – small business owners; business, marketing, and operations managers; financial industry professionals; and
others who wish to learn the tools for creating data-supported solutions to business questions. The certificate meets at UD’s Downtown Center, 8th and King streets, Wilmington and can be completed in approximately three months.
For more information about the Certificate in Analytics: Optimizing Big Data program, visit www.pcs.udel.edu/data or call 302-831-7600.

Get Involved in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
People often ask us “How can I help?” The fight against breast cancer is certainly a community effort – from the doctors and medical professionals who provide care to the family and friends who provide support to the businesses and organizations who raise funds. Here are two ways you can help make an impact.
Become a DBCC Volunteer & Breast Cancer Advocate
DBCC wouldn’t be able to do as much in the community without our wonderful volunteers. Our volunteers help with community outreach and fundraising events, help around the office, and more. Volunteers can help on a regular basis or with special events as needed. You can also become a breast cancer advocate by learning more about breast cancer and breast health. You can attend our Annual Breast Cancer Update, a free conference, so that you can educate others about what they need to know about breast cancer.
Have Your Business or Organization Partner with DBCC
Businesses and organizations get creative and think of unique ways to raise money for DBCC including events like golf tournaments, walks, special sales, and more. If you belong to a community group or if your employer is looking for a way to get involved in the community, suggest a partnership with DBCC. You can help raise funds for the life-saving fight against breast cancer.

Social Seniors:
The Health Benefits of Community Living
By Dianne Duffy Community Relations Director, Glen Mills Senior Living
W
hen Mom and Dad start to need a little help throughout the day, home care, adult day care, and senior living communities are just a few of the care options available. In addition to the personal care offered by different providers, you’ll also want to look at the way each helps seniors stay social.
Social health is just as important as physical health when it comes to enjoying one’s lifestyle. Recent studies have found that if we don’t use our social skills, we can actually begin to lose them. An article published in The New York Times on March 23, 2013 by Barbara L. Fredrickson, professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, revealed the brain-heart connection and how staying social “…can help regulate the internal systems that keep you healthy, like your cardiovascular, glucose and immune responses.” The study looked at the overuse of technology as a substitute for face-to-face interaction, and the lessons from it can apply to us all. As we get older, we don’t have as many opportunities to connect with friends, often because we can no longer drive or move around as easily. This however, doesn’t need to limit how social we can be. It’s nice to have a group of friends to

share experiences with – whether it is friends you may already know from your hometown, or friends you make when you arrive at a new community. When a senior receives care at home, typically a caregiver visits for a set number of hours, and provides a range of services, from personal care to companionship and even light housekeeping in some cases. Senior living communities offer similar personal care services to seniors who need assistance with activities such as medication management, bathing, dressing, and dining, while also offering a full calendar of activity programs and transportation to events and appointments. For some, care at home is a great option, if family and friends can stop by often. For others, living at a community surrounded by friends brings out the best in them. “When you visit a community, observe how involved residents
are. If they’re smiling and actively involved in activities, parties, games, crafts, that is a strong indication of a strong social life. Dianne welcomes families to call 610-358-4900 to make a lunch or dinner reservation and learn about Personal Care services and rehabilitation at Glen Mills Senior Living.

When Living At Home Is No Longer An Option For Mom uncompromising parents who are no longer safe in their homes.

bscurely blended into many of our workplace offices, PTA committees and church choir rehearsals are a quiet population of adult children. Many of them go unsung for their good deeds and are left to maintain the rigors of their own lives while simultaneously needing to sort out the life of an aging parent. Often referred to as “caregivers”, adult children of aging parents are faced with heart wrenching decisions, sleepless nights, and sometimes
Is an Assisted Living facility the answer? Is homecare a permanent option? How do I start the conversation? What can my parents afford? Where do I start? Will my mom thrive in a senior living community? These are just a few of the many questions that adult children ask themselves when the inevitable time for change presents itself. Memory loss, lack of safe mobility, poor medication management and loneliness from a lack of socialization in the home are all indicators that senior living should be considered. For many seniors the concept of moving into Assisted Living is a favorable solution. Assisted living is often viewed as the best of both worlds. Residents have as much independence as they want with the knowledge that personal care and support services are available

Assisted Living communities range from a stand alone residence to being one level of care in a continuing care retirement community (CCRC). The physical environment of an assisted living is often more appealing to both potential residents and their families. These communities offer a more home-like atmosphere with apartment styles that typically include studio and one bedroom models. Kitchenettes usually feature a small refrigerator and microwave.

Why Would Anyone Choose To Work As A Hospice Nurse? Photos and story by Beverly Crowl
E
ileen Challenger was born and raised in north Wilmington, earned her Bachelors Degree in Psychology from the University of Delaware, and several years later, returned to studies at Cecil County Community College where she completed her Nursing Degree. She said, “My initial career was working with people with disabilities at Elwyn, and then for the state of Delaware as a Case Manager. One day, I was reading about the nursing shortage and thought, “Hmm, I can probably do that,” so I decided to go back to school and become a nurse. Somewhere along the way, perhaps from my multi-disciplinary background, I discovered the field of hospice nursing and knew that it would be a perfect fit for me. Eileen met a Delaware Hospice representative at an information session in 2007, learned about the organization, contacted Human Resources, and her goal of working for a hospice provider was accomplished!
Delaware Hospice’s Eileen Challenger, BA, RN, CHPN, Care Manager, explains why she wouldn’t do anything but be a hospice nurse!
Delaware Hospice provides extensive training for its clinical staff, including assigning preceptors—experienced nurses who mentor new hires. Eileen said, “I still remember the great advice my preceptor gave me. I had always been comfortable with people and going into their homes as I had done this type of work in my previous positions. To be a good Delaware Hospice staff nurse, I had to learn more about the mechanics of endof-life and found the on-the-job training to be excellent, both in the classroom and through my preceptor. The book and on-line education is important, but you also have to experience it to really learn. Eileen’s education didn’t end there. She joined other members of Delaware Hospice’s clinical staff in voluntarily pursuing professional certification in hospice and palliative care, which she received after a year. She remembered, “This was quite difficult but definitely worthwhile.” With Eileen’s attention to detail and expertise as a case manager, she was promoted to Team Leader two years ago, and just recently to Care Manager. “This is a win-win for me, because I’m excited that I will now be able to be back out in the field to see patients. This is the aspect of hospice nursing that I love more than anything—being with the families.”
Mary Jane Schwab, Clinical Supervisor for New Castle County, has worked closely with Eileen since she joined Delaware Hospice and enthusiastically praised her qualifications: “She is so detailoriented that she catches things before they even occur. She’s on top of things, clinically, and knows what needs to be done and how to get it done. Eileen is great at directing our patients’ plan of care. She loves the staff, appreciates what they do, and makes it known to them that she appreciates it. Likewise, our nurses think highly of her. She is easy to direct, listens to guidance and she has a heart for this work.”

sandwich or fed a cat on occasion— not what a typical nurse does.”
emotional, physical and spiritual aspects are all intermeshed. You’re exposed to all of it—you can’t work in this field in a silo. You can’t just be a nurse, and not be concerned with what other things are going on with the patient, family and environment. When you become aware that this person is having significant emotional issues, you call a team member. If you understand that spiritual questions are weighing down this person, you call a team member. Delaware Hospice staff members and volunteers always claim that their greatest motivation for continuing to serve stems from the patients and families, themselves, and the love and sacrifices witnessed each and every day. Eileen agrees, and said that there are many people that she will never forget. “For example, one patient was with us for awhile with the ups and downs of her disease. I knew her so well and her routine, that with each visit, I would make a cup of tea to leave for her when I was leaving. This was important to her, as it was for me. I used to always ask my patients if there was anything they needed me to do before I left—don’t ask me to clean the windows! But I have made a
“Another patient decided she was ready to go, and planned her memorial service so that she could say goodbye and give things away while she was still here. I attended that memorial service and then left for a two-week vacation. On my return, she had gone downhill quickly, and hadn’t spoken for days. When I approached her bedside, she said, “I need you, Eileen.” That was the last she spoke, and passed away two days later. This was an incredible and most unforgettable gift to me.” There are very sad moments in hospice nursing, but they are well balanced by the ability to help a patient and family through those difficult moments. Eileen said, “End-of-life is something we can’t change, but we can help make that experience the best it can be for our families. I love what I do and can’t imagine doing anything other than hospice work.” Another thing she’s learned over the years is good advice for all of us: “Life is short. Enjoy what time you have. Don’t wait to settle things. If you have something you want to do on your bucket list, don’t wait!”
story time with Grandpa
Having served as a hospice nurse for several years now, Eileen is more convinced than ever that this was the right choice for her. “What I wanted as a nurse was more of a relationship with my patients and their families than you can have in an acute care setting, where most people are there for three days and then gone. I wanted to learn more about these people than you possibly can working an 8 hour shift in three days.” “Also I love how hospice involves a team approach, including the physician, nurses, chaplains, social workers, and nursing aides, and the

Secrets To A Great Maternity Leave Planning for a new baby can feel like a full-time job in itself. Chances are, though, that all of your planning is happening in addition to your responsibilities at work. Just over 70% of employed women took a maternity leave after their By: Jodi McGee last pregnancy according to Women’s Health USA 2011. So how to do you make the most of your time at home with your new baby and set yourself up for a successful return to your career?
Get clear about benefits.
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) entitles US workers to take up to 12 weeks off following the birth or adoption of a child. But specific benefits depend on your employer, so request information from your HR department about how maternity leaves work at your organization.
Talk to others who’ve done it.
Women who have already taken a maternity leave are powerful allies. Whether she’s someone who works at your organization or an outside friend, ask veteran moms what advice they have for you. You might hear something that applies to your situation. For example, did you know that you are able to hire someone to fill your role temporarily while you’re out so that you work doesn’t get dropped, you have a single point of contact to keep you updated and your co-workers don’t have to take on your duties?
Make plans for child care now.
Investigate child care options in your area while you are pregnant, not after baby comes. Quality providers often have long waiting lists.
Be certain you’ll feel unsure.
Part hormones, part massive life change, part sleep deprivation… you will likely have a few moments of panic during your early days of motherhood where you doubt your own abilities in some way, shape or form. A common pair of worries among women going out on leave is whether anyone is able to do her job up to her standards, or what if someone does it better. By engaging a professional for a set, temporary period of time you can rest assured that your work will be attended to with the same care you’d give it without any fear of someone looking to take your spot permanently.
Stay connected (if you want to).
Here are eight strategies to having a great maternity leave.
Clearly communicate if and how you want your coworkers to contact you while you are out. Are you open to taking questions? Do you want to be copied on certain kinds of email? This is your choice. You may want to completely unplug from the office and focus on bonding with your baby. Or you may find that after weeks of playing Chief Diaper Officer, you are ready to wrap your mind around something a bit more strategic once or twice while you’re home. (I’ve found that co-workers are more than accommodating of a baby’s schedule and understand if you need to cancel at the last minute.)
Be part of the planning.
Breaking the news to your boss is one of your first duties as a publiclypregnant woman. You should certainly schedule some time to let your boss know that you are expecting and what your post-baby plans are. But don’t stop there. This is an opportunity to collaborate with your employer on figuring out a solution. Remember, while most bosses are genuinely happy, your leave does create a new situation for them to manage. Be proactive in mapping out your responsibilities, who you work with and how you’d handle situations that may come up. Clearly identifying the roles you play and how best to resource them will make the transition smoother (and may make your boss more willing to consider creative working agreements).
Cherish your time home.
You only get to experience your baby’s first few months once in their lifetime. Not only is this an incredibly special time in your relationship, it’s also one of the rare times in your career where it’s okay to not try to think about work on a regular basis… enjoy it!
Begin the transition early.
Building a transition plan is one of the early steps in the process used at Maternity Leave It To Me. When creating your own transition plan, make sure that you take into account that babies come when they are ready! Start planning downloads and hand-offs about 3 weeks before your due date.
About Maternity Leave It To Me Jodi McGee founded Maternity Leave It To Me because she knows firsthand that having a baby changes everything, including your professional life. After navigating three maternity leaves of her own and watching friends, colleagues & clients wrestle with the same anxieties and decisions, it became clear to her that this is one of today’s workplace realities and there was an opportunity for a new answer. How Women Should Select The Appropriate Wealth Manager Presented By: Frederick J. Dawson, ChFC, CLU
Y
ou need someone who demonstrates a passion for working with women. One who displays a sincere level of respect for women….one who asks more questions, has more dialog, more stories, helps to base decisions on meaningful discussions, may have a longer decision cycle, allows comparison shopping, someone who wants to make you a “raging fan.”
Step 1: The Discovery Meeting A highly structured discovery meeting should include many questions that ask about the quantitative issues as well as the qualitative issues in a woman’s life. This meeting should take no less than about 2 – 3 hours. The focus of the meeting is spent in understanding her and her circumstances, not trying to figure out what financial product should be sold. Step 2: Investment Planning Meeting At age 65 women can expect to live, on average, an additional 20 years. It is for that reason that women have a heightened interest in assuring that their investment portfolio is aligned with their long term goals, objectives and concerns. The plan should culminate in the action steps that need to be taken and when appropriate.
Step 3: Mutual Commitment Meeting Research has indicated that women prefer more time during the decision cycle. Certainly no decision should be rushed. Make sure that this particular firm should be utilized. A Personal Chief Financial Officer (PCFO) who wears the hat of Wealth Manager is an important member of the team of professionals. The selection of this person is of utmost importance and requires proper due diligence and consideration. Step 4: 90 Day Follow up Meeting Our research has shown that women seek education, organization and simplicity around their finances. An especially attentive PCFO will make sure that all questions are addressed in a dignified encouraging way and that at no time should a patronizing tone be used. Don’t hesitate to ask the same question 10 times if you need to understand an important point. A great PCFO will encourage questions.

Where You Work Effects How You Work and play computer games, or a spot for solitaire breaks while cleaning the garage. It should be a place that fosters productivity and focus. A place where work gets done. So if a home office is to serve as a functional place of business, it helps to follow a few ground rules. 1. Devote a separate space to the office. A spare room is ideal, but if you don’t have space, a separate corner or area will do. 2. Keep all others, especially children, out of the office during “business hours.” 3. If at all possible, keep the computer off-limits to children. Invest in an inexpensive computer for them to use.

Taking Control of Your Environment
It’s a typical day in the life of home-based businessman Bob Kornfeld. And, as usual, things are a just little bit hectic. A client called to discuss an upcoming project, but Bob can’t find the notes from their last conversation anywhere on the desk in his home office. One of the kids must have been using his computer yesterday, because his settings are wrong and it’s running slow. But then again, he’s had to answer so many phone calls he hasn’t had time to get anything done anyway. Now he’s got to organize a last-minute teleconference before the plumber arrives to fix the kitchen sink…which of course could be at any time in the next three hours. Small business coaches know that for people who run homebased businesses, one of the biggest professional challenges is managing what can sometimes be a very unprofessional environment. The more distractions there are, the harder it is to concentrate on the task at hand and do it well. But there are solutions available to help small businesspeople get the most out of their work space.
Draw a Line between “Home” and “Office”

cumstances, finding the space and privacy necessary to work productively at home can still be an issue. But there are other options available to small businesspeople. An executive suite or business center offers all the perks of a traditional office without the pressure of a long-term commitment. Often available month-to-month, they are usually professionally furnished and equipped with all the necessary communication and latest technology. They come in a range of sizes to suit one-person operations as well as larger ones. And the best part is, they include a receptionist to handle the mail and visitors, internet access, telephone service, administrative support, office cleaning and more. Another, even more affordable solution is the Virtual Office. These offer only the services you need, from a separate address and phone service while you still work from home to meeting space, conference calling and other flexible, pay-asyou-go solutions.
Of course, even in the best of cir-

There are two worlds in which we can live. The world of comfort and the world of growth. Comfort is addictive and seductive, but there is no fulfillment in comfort. We are wired to grow. Yes it is uncertain, but it is part of who we are at our core. When we step out into the unknown, we grow and become more. As we become more, we then have more to share with ourselves and others. Through growth and contribution is where we feel fulfillment. It is not always easy, but it is the path we must all take.

She looked at me me with a nervous smile and said, “It has been so long since I really let go and embraced changed. I know I can do it, but my fear is: what if I fail?” I chuckled and said, “Don’t worry, you WILL fail, and you will learn how to get back up stronger, with more resolve than before.” Her face lit up and for once I saw her first real smile as she said, “I think I would really like that. I’ve lived in comfort and fear long enough. I am tired of waiting, tired of trying, it is time to break free!” We all have the resources within us to create the life we want. Sometimes all we need is the courage to let go of comfort and embrace who we are and what we can achieve, accomplish, and become. In the case of my client, with a little coaching and guidance, she now lives in growth; unafraid and ready to achieve her dreams.

Like most married woman with children , I found myself coursing through life on autopilot. My first priority was taking care of my family, which lead me to take a back seat to my own life. I “thought” I was unhappy and that crushed my spirit. How could I be so unhappy when I have so much to be grateful for? What I learned through attending the Fire Walk and Breaking through the Barrier is that you don’t “lose” happiness, or need to search for it. It is there with you everyday. You just need the right tools to help you wipe away fear, old habits and denial . Once you accomplish that goal , you’ll find happiness standing right in front of you, arms extended; ready to embrace you once again . Thank you GLC. Thank you for teaching me how to get back in the driver’s seat….I am thoroughly enjoying the ride! With lots of love and gratitude, Cindy Berkowitz
I remember the look in her weathered eyes when she asked me, “Is there any hope for me?” Life can be tough. We all know that; and it is easy to get caught up in trying to make a living, paying the bills, raising kids, eating right, and so on. The next thing we know, that birthday with a “0” or a “5” is coming up, reminding us just exactly how far we have NOT come. I smiled and said, “What you need isn’t hope. What you need is YOU. And that is something you have always had within you. You must access that part of you... the part of you that recognizes the truth: You are more than you’ve allowed yourself to become. Just because you have not stepped up in the past doesn’t mean that you can’t make a new choice right now. Your past does not equal your future. Helpful Hints for Successful Navigation of Your Claim
Delaware Workers’ Compensation Benefits to work due to an injury, a consultation with an attorney, like those in my office, would be prudent so that you know how much income you are entitled to on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
By: Heather A. Long, Esq.
W
orkplace injuries can be overwhelming to deal with. The stress of trying to document everything, while attending doctor appointments, recuperating and not feeling well all at the same time can prove to be too much for some people. In that regard, it is best to talk to an attorney who can eliminate some of the stress by making sure you are getting all the benefits that you are entitled to, preparing and filing paperwork, and speaking on your behalf to your employer, the employer’s insurance company and the Department of Labor. But, if you do choose to go it alone, there are a few things you should know that will make the process seem less daunting. 1. Know what Workers’ Compensation is – Workers’ Compensation, generally speaking, is a system by which an injured worker may recover for an injury they sustained while on the job. These benefits are meant to put the injured worker back into the same position (health wise) that he was in prior to becoming injured. There are several types of benefits available to the injured worker, which are discussed below. 2. Know the benefits to which you are entitled – Injured workers may be entitled to some, or all of the following benefits: medical bill and prescription payment, lost wage replacement (in the form of total or partial disability), mileage, permanent impairment, scarring and disfigurement, and death benefits. Check in to each of those types of benefits and make a claim for all that apply to your injury and treatment. For the more complicated cases involving wage loss or inability June/July 2013
3. Know how to properly report your injury – Work injuries must be reported to your employer as soon as possible. The longer you go without reporting your injury, the more suspicious it will seem. It is best to give this notice in writing, so as to avoid any confusion later on. Failure to report your injury may deprive you of the benefits to which you would otherwise be entitled. If your employer does not agree that you were injured on the job, or does not agree with the nature and extent of your injuries, you will need to file a petition at the Department of Labor. Again, if your case rises to this level, then it is best to have legal representation on your side to help navigate the process for you.
to which you are entitled. All of the attorneys at Kimmel, Carter, Roman & Peltz are skilled litigators, and can ease the burden of dealing with the insurance company and your employer. For more information, or to schedule a free consultation, please call (302) 565-6100 or e-mail her directly at HLong@kcrlaw.com.
4. Collect your benefits – Once your injury claim has been accepted, close monitoring is required to assure that payments are being made in a timely and accurate manner. This includes confirming with your doctors that their bills are paid timely, reviewing the lost wage checks to confirm that they are paid in the correct amounts and on time, and continual submission of mileage claims. For further details on the amounts and types of benefits you may be entitled to, please see my August 2011 article in this magazine, entitled Know Your Rights. The article can also be found online at Thewomensjournal.com, and provides detailed information on how to compute the dollar amounts for each of the abovedescribed benefits. If you believe that you were involved in a workplace injury, report the injury as soon as possible and then seek medical attention. If ongoing medical care, lost wages or scarring has happened as a result of the injury, you should enlist the help of a skilled attorney to make sure that you receive all benefits 48

How Do You Secure Your Most Precious Cargo? T
he Personal Injury Group Attorneys of Morris James LLP see potential clients who were involved in automobile accidents all too frequently involving minor children. Far too often it becomes evident to us that the children may not have been secured properly in their child safety seats. With the end of the school year and vacation season approaching, the Morris James Personal Injury Group Attorneys dedicate this article to educating Delaware residents as to the current Child Restraint Law.
Delaware’s child restraint law [21 Del.C. § 4803] reads –All children must be properly restrained in a federally approved child safety seat appropriate for the child’s age, weight and height up to 8 years of age or 65 lbs whichever comes first. Additionally, children 8 through 15 years old are required to be properly secured in a seatbelt. Children under 12 years old or 65 inches in height are still required to sit in the back seat of a vehicle if there are active airbags in the front passenger seating position. The fine for violating the law is $25.00.
How do you choose the correct car seat? Birth – 12 months Your infant under the age of 1 should always ride in a rearfacing car seat. There are different types of rear-facing infant seats that can only be used in the rearfacing position. Three-in-one and convertible car seats usually have higher height and weight limits for
the rear-facing position, which allow you to keep your infant rear-facing for a longer period of time. 1-3 years Securing children in the rearfacing position for as long as possible is the best way to keep them safe while riding in a vehicle. Children should remain in a rearfacing seat until they reach the top height or weight limit suggested by the manufacturer of the seat. Once children outgrow rear-facing seats, they’re ready to travel in forward facing car seats with harnesses.

The approval of a minor’s settlement is governed by Superior Court Civil Rule 133. Rule 133 (c) provides that the petition must be accompanied by medical reports or other evidence so that the court can make a determination of the reasonableness and fairness of the settlement. Soft, lower petal count roses grow faster, are harvested sooner, the turnover is higher, thus, the crop value is different. Another frequent inquiry, is why are roses so expensive in February? Almost all rose growers will cut back their rose crop at the end of December to schedule their bloom time to coincide with February 14th. Although January can be a quiet month for florists, the rose crop and sales are drastically reduced.

answer is the petal count. The higher the petal count that makes up the bloom, the firmer the flower, the longer it took to grow, so the longer it will take to be “finished”.

Recently, however, I have heard from my many happy brides about the wedding journey my bouquet has taken with the bride & groom; how well it was treated, all the places it has been, being treated like a fragile new puppy.
Where Your Vision Comes Into Bloom
So it begs the question, how long do blooms normally last? Of course this depends on the flowers selected, the weather, and how well the flowers are watered and protected.

A normal bridal bouquet of mine can be expected to last over a week in water. But in everyday bouquets, the expected longevity really starts with variety of the flowers. Many blooms are simply sturdier than others and the length of time from bud to full bloom varies enormously.

When flowers are harvested correctly and given the proper care and handling, they can be expected to last to their optimum life expectancy. Changing the water and keeping them in a cool place also helps.

What Are YOU Wearing?
Have you ever watched TV shows such as “What Not to Wear” and “How Do I Look” or heard celebrities talking about how they owe their fabulous fashions to personal stylists and shoppers? Have you wondered what it would be like to get that kind of professional help for yourself? Or do you know someone who might benefit from getting a new look?
A
s you read this article, stop for a minute and look at what you are wearing. Does your outfit make you feel fantastic? Does it flatter you? Does it make an incredibly positive impact on those around you? If there are other people nearby now while you are reading, sneak a peek at them. What’s the first word that comes into your mind when you look at each one of them…and think about that one word they might use to label you. Each of us is a walking label – a visual personal brand that’s created by our own personal styles. But you already know that, right? That’s why you get your hair cut by a stylist, your teeth taken care of by a dentist, your body shaped up by a trainer or your skin maintained by an esthetician. But one of the biggest parts of your brand – your clothes and accessories – you probably take care of on your own. Be honest with yourself though, do you really know what looks best on you? Do you think your friends or family really know? And do you realize that many sales associates – while very hard-working and well-intentioned -- don’t often have the time or skills to share ideas truly well-tailored to you? No matter what your age or budget is or whether you need just one amazing outfit for a special occasion or a complete closet cleanout and wardrobe makeover, a personal stylist and shopper can change your look… and perhaps change parts of your life also.

The Skinny On Permanent Make Up… A
s Permanent Cosmetics is a fast growing industry, most women have at least heard of the glorious notion of “never having to apply make-up again.” Many women have considered the possibilities of permanent make up, for themselves or for someone else, knowing that such procedures could make a tremendous difference, even a life change. However, in our busy worlds not all have found the time to explore even the most basic aspects of the procedures, putting it “on the list” as we say, hoping to eventually find the time to learn more. We are here to clarify. So, we are fully aware that we can permanently enhance our natural beauty with permanent eyeliner, brows, and or lips. Did you know she also does areola tattooing and scar camouflaging? What does it take to achieve the perfection that Carmella is recognized for in the tri-state area? Does it hurt, how long does it last, and what can I expect? Read on my friend, read on. It is very important that when considering the procedure(s), one understands that 2 visits are crucial to achieving the desired results, and that these visits must be 4 weeks apart (6 for lips). “Meticulous” is an understatement when describing Carmella’s artistry. She likes to say the first round is baking the cake, and the second is the icing. She is committed to perfection, and by requiring 2 sessions, she has achieved her honorable reputation for which she is known by. So if you’re planning to be finished for a special event, plan ahead, two months to be safe. As far as the procedure itself, it is comforting to know that there is always a consultation prior to any application of pigment. During this time, together you will pick colors, discuss shapes and lines, and come to an agreement on what is to be expected for the final result. There are no surprises, only possibilities. With her decades of skin care and makeup expertise, she often makes suggestions to clients they never even considered, opening up and enhancing facial features to their highest potential. Ultimately the client makes the decision, and Carmella delivers. The consultation is always free, and can be done by itself or along with the first procedure, depending on where you are in your decision making process.

7 years is the best way to keep your fresh, youthful color. Every person’s skin is unique, as will be your make up. The good news is you don’t have to keep up with the maintenance if you feel you no longer care for the enhanced look. It will not turn blue or black. It will simply fade over time, eventually leaving no trace. Honestly though, it will be hard to return to the drudgery of the daily make up grind. One gets a bit spoiled you know, and it’s hard to go back to the old way. Yes, you can wake-up with make up, you can exercise, swim, sweat and play and you’ll have no smears or smudges. For those interested in scar camouflaging and/or areola restoration, it would behoove you to come in for the free consultation, especially if it something to boost your esteem. Carmella’s color theory is unmatched, and her delicate manner only adds to the warm hearted experience. With her expertise and education, she has managed to create a three dimensional looking areola/nipple for those with breast reconstruction, giving selfconfidence and naturalness back to the women who’ve fought and deserve it. Most light pink or white scars can be blended to appear as if they didn’t exist, regardless of their location on the body. Sometimes looking good is a great start to feeling good, and together, it’s in the direction towards wellness.
Referring Doctors
After the consultation, if you’re ready to go ahead, you will relax in the chair while she applies a topical numbing cream to the area(s) to be worked on. She reapplies this several times throughout the procedure to ensure the highest level of comfort with little or no pain at all. When you’re through (brows and liner take about an hour and a half, full lip takes about 2 hours on average), you will be given a little care package with instructions for home care. At first, your make up will appear very fresh and bright, kind of unnatural. This will last for 2-5 days, while the pigment flakes off on its own. (It is important that you do not pick or peel at the dried pigment, the pigment cannot be disturbed). It is advisable not to make any major social plans for the next few days because it will be vivid. It will take 4 weeks for the skin to heal and the pigment to fully resurface. Often after the first round there will be spots or areas where the pigment completely absorbed and did not resurface. This is when you come for the second seating and perfection is achieved. Carmella always gives 150% and prides herself in her artwork, a feeling that is obvious when you are in her hands.

he heat of summer is here. Don’t be caught with melted, smudged mascara! Ugh! We have all experienced it at some point since discovering the tube of black stuff and are still struggling today. Waterproof mascara isn’t much of a solution when you risk breaking your lashes that can dry out and become brittle. Everything You Wanted To Know About A Bra Fitting...

been a while, don’t put if off any longer. You’ll find friendly and helpful trained fitters to take the worry and apprehension out of finding the right bra.
By Debbie Esslinger, Owner
A
round 80% of women are in the wrong bra size. Literally millions of women are not looking or feeling as good as they deserve. In fact, when did you last get fitted? Have you ever been properly fitted? Selecting a good bra is brought to you by BARE ESSENTIALS. Our bra boutique wants to prove how easy it is to choose a bra that loves your body. We’ll help you every step of the way. What Does a Good Fit Give you? • More Comfort • Better Shape • Less chance of sagging breast tissue • Better Posture • More confidence – and feeling good inside makes you look even better outside. If you’ve never had a bra fitting, or it’s just
(But Were Afraid To Ask!)
You should get fitted every six months. Our bodies change all the time, so it’s really important to keep checking your bra size. Once your correct size has been determined, our experts will assist you in picking the right style for your body type. The size range of our bras helps our fitters to accommodate most women. But, remember, you may not take the same size bra in every style. Each bra is cut differently, just like jeans or skirts. You may take a certain size in one brand, but something else in another. There is no “one size accommodates all” in bra fitting. Which style suits you? When we are choosing a bra that’ll make you look great, we need to consider what we’re working with. Different styles suit different bust shapes. Whether you are small, average or full busted, there is a bra that will accommodate your form. Keep an eye on your hooks. If a bra fits properly, you should be able to comfortably fasten it on the loosest hook. Then, as the bra adjusts to your body or begins to age, you can gradually work your way in. If you have to go straight to the tightest hook, that bra is not right for you. The bra should be low and tight
A Good bra has your bra band level and snug (but not too tight) all the way around. Your bust should be fully held and supported by the underwire or the strong band of a nonunderwire. There should be no overspill or puckering in the cup. If it’s an underwire, the bra should sit flat against your chest wall. Using these tips, you will look fabulous and feel comfortable and supported. Bare Essentials also offers bra fitting swim wear in D-H cup. Some of our bra companies also make swim suits and really know how to fit the curvy girl. If their bras fit you, so will their swim suits. WOW! Try us on for size… you’ll love a very “fitting” experience.

Why A Chemical Peel?
M
any of us are looking for a simple way to improve our skin without surgery. A chemical peel is a treatment used to exfoliate and rejuvenate By: Erica Suppa, B.S., L.E. the skin. This procedure uses a chemical solution, usually an acid, to dissolve away the upper layers of the skin in order to improve conditions such as acne, unwanted pigmentation or wrinkles. Chemical peels have been in use for a number of years and are a highly popular way to improve the texture and look of skin. Over half a million people have a session performed each year. Typically with a chemical peel nothing actually “peels” off. During a chemical peel, the chemical solution is applied to the skin and is allowed to soak in. The solution works by destroying parts of the skin in a controlled way, causing new tissue to emerge. There are three basic types of peels that differ based on how deeply the chemical penetrates and what type of chemical solution is used: 1. Superficial Peels: The mildest type of chemical peel. They can be used on all skin types. Superficial peels usually contain a mild acid, most often glycolic or lactic acid. There is little to no downtime with superficial peels.
Fresh Faced Skin Care is owned by Licensed Esthetician and Research Scientist, Erica Suppa. Erica holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Delaware and has worked in the scientific and medical industries for over 12 years. She also works at the University of Pennsylvania as a cancer research specialist, assisting in the creation of ground-breaking cellular therapy cancer treatments. Let Erica’s scientific knowledge of skin care ingredients and how they interact with your skin allow you to get the results you have been searching for. Why spend money and not get results?
You can improve: • Acne or acne scars • Age and liver spots • Fine lines and wrinkles • Irregular skin pigmentation • Rough skin and scaly patches • Scars • Sun-damaged skin For some, the idea of a “chemical peel” can be a scary thought. However, Fresh Faced Skin Care utilizes PCA SKIN superficial peels. These peels produce little to no discomfort, minimal visible exfoliation, and your skin will be glowing following treatment. Regardless of skin color, type, or sensitivity, we have a customized formula to meet your needs.
Testimonials:
It is my new favorite place. Thank you, Erica. I will see you again soon for another appointment. Erica is a wonderful person, whom I trust with my skin care needs. She is very passionate about her business and cares about her clients’ skin care concerns. She takes the time to evaluate and recommend what she thinks is the path to take for my skin care regime. Love Fresh Faced Skin Care. Proven treatments and products. I loved the treatment I received. The environment was private and the treatment personal. Excellent experience overall.
Call 302-689-3223 or visit www.freshfacedskincare.com for more information.
2. Medium Peels: Penetrate the skin more deeply than superficial peels. Swelling and redness is common. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is the main peeling agent used for medium peels, though the peel may also be done in several steps using a different chemical solution followed by TCA. 3. Deep Peels: Penetrate several layers of skin and cause a seconddegree burn of the skin. They are used only on the face. A chemical called phenol is usually used for a deep peel. Physicians perform these deep peels, with anesthesia being required. Deep peels may tend to bleach the skin (hypopigmentation) and healing generally takes several weeks. A deep peel can be done only once in most cases. If you want your skin to look smoother and younger, consider a chemical peel. A chemical peel is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin. Although chemical peels are used mostly on the face, they can also be used to improve the skin on your neck, décolleté and hands. www.TheWomensJournal.com

How To Have Beautiful Hair On Your Special Day wedding date to make certain that he/she can accommodate your time frame. Talk to your stylist for their recommendation for your pre-wedding hair care. No matter what type of hair you have, do a deep conditioning treatment once a week to restore moisture. If your hair is oily, be careful to avoid your roots and condition only the length of your hair. Try to avoid heat as much as possible on your hair. And of course, trim, trim, trim -- dry heat will only worsen the dull appearance of damaged or split ends.
M
ost young girls dream of their wedding day from the time they start grade school. Then they grow up, fall in love, and the plannaing starts. The one item that many times gets forgotten is the hair, yes they often have a bridal hairstyle in mind, but let’s face it -- if it doesn’t work with your wedding day weather, you may be in for a bad hair day. A better bet is to come up with a plan for your hair that will work with the weather that Mother Nature decides to bless you with. Trust me you don’t want to be crying the blues because your hair looks like a limp noodle, nor do you want to have a wild style from the 80’s looking back at you in the photos that will be with you for the rest of your life, and don’t forget you want the hair to fit with your wedding style. It may sound crazy, but check the weather history for the month that you are planning to tie the knot. The weather will always be a factor on your wedding day style. If you are planning to have your stylist come to the site where you are having everyone dress for the wedding, then you have to be certain that your hair stylist can work you in to his/her schedule. Or if you are going to his/her salon with your entire wedding party, this also needs to be discussed in the very early stages. You should visit your hair stylist even as early as a year before your
June/July 2013
If the weather is damp and humid, no matter what your natural hair texture is, you’re going to need to work with what you’ve got. This is not the time or the place to try to make a curly mane stay straight -- chances are you’ll wind up with a total mess. Prep your locks by regularly using a frizz-fighting serum. Comb a few drops through soaking wet hair to be sure it gets distributed evenly. On your wedding day: The last time you wash your hair before the wedding don’t rub -you’ll rough up any broken or damaged hairs, increasing the chance of frizz. Your stylist should apply a de-frizzing serum. And finish your dry style with a second application of frizz-fighter (pomade or gel works best). You might want to keep a little on hand throughout the wedding day for smoothing down any hair that may curl up.
hair care routine that includes regular deep conditioning treatments and trims every 4–6 weeks. 4 Months Before – Schedule your hair and makeup bridal trial, reserve your wedding date and bridal party services on the salon’s schedule. 2–3 Months Before – Collect photo inspiration of different hair and makeup styles you’d like to see at your bridal trial. 1 Month Before – Get your hair and makeup trial completed together. This allows enough time before the wedding if you want to try a new style but is close enough to keep your look fresh. 2 Weeks Before - Get your final hair trim and deep conditioning treatment, touch up your color and/or highlights. Day of - Receive your hair and make-up services. It is recommended that these be the only services you receive on your actual wedding day. You will find the trends for 2013 versatile, interchangeable, and easily mixed and there is something for all hair types.
As you create the schedule of your wedding day, make certain to schedule properly. From our experience, we recommend scheduling your hair appointment approximately seven hours before your ceremony if you will have formal posed portraits beforehand and four hours before your ceremony, if you are having your formals afterwards. We Don’t Do Bad Hair Days recommends the following: (Pre-Wedding Checklist) 6 Months Before - Experiment with different cuts and colors, find your look and begin a

Pearls, Beautiful Gems From The Sea Suitable for Royalty, The Christening of your little Queen, or just for fun! Ron Sayers – Graduate Gemologist (GIA)
Q
ueen Elizabeth, Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana all wore pearls. Most of today’s modern brides also adorn themselves with pearls. They can be worn on any dressy occasion as well as a semi formal dinner date. Pearls are great with business attire for the professional woman or just out to lunch with the girls.
What is a natural pearl?
Pearls in their natural form are a beautiful accident of nature that is very rare indeed. Natural pearls start from a grain of sand that becomes trapped inside of the Akoya oyster. When the oyster cannot expel the grain of sand it starts to build layers of nacre around it and in time that nacre calcifies and the pearl is formed. The nacre material is the same substance that forms the luster on the inside of the shell of the Japanese Akoya oyster. Our edible oysters and clams can also produce a bead but it in no way has the beauty or luster associated with a fine oriental pearl.
What is a cultured pearl ?
Cultured pearls have the same outward appearance as natural pearls however the process is started by man inserting a round shell bead in the flesh of the oyster, thus giving the process a head start. From there the oyster secretes the nacre to coat the bead and form the cultured pearl. This process has made beautiful cultured pearl jewelry available and affordable to the masses.
Types of cultured pearls: The most well known and prized for years has been the Japanese saltwater Akoya pearl. The cool water temperatures these pearls are grown in can produce a very high luster pearl up to about 10 mm in diameter.
Freshwater pearls are another type of cultured pearl that starts with a piece of mantel tissue from another oyster and forms from there. The freshwater pearls therefore have a smaller nucleus than the saltwater cultured pearls. Early freshwater pearls had the appearance of grains of rice however new advancements in recent years have improved the shape and size of freshwater pearls dramatically. Imitation pearls are glass beads, plastic or any other substance that can be coated or painted to resemble a pearl but are only considered costume jewelry and have very little value and durability.
How pearls are graded:
The factors that determine the value of a pearl are the size of the pearl. Larger pearls are much more rare due to the stress placed upon the oyster to produce them. The more spherical or totally round the pearl the better and with a strand of pearls the degree to which they match is very important. The finest cultured pearls are at least 95% blemish free and have a very high luster. The color of the pearl is also important as well as the overtone and iridescence, referred to as the orient. The base colors can be pink, white, cream or green as well as black and yellowish. Many pearls also undergo bleaching and dyeing as part of their preparation for market. Freshwater pearls in particular are dyed in every color of the rainbow to produce interesting fun
inexpensive jewelry for all ages.
They said it couldn’t be done:
A recent new twist to pearls was the introduction of a nucleus made of turquoise, amethyst or citrine quartz which the oyster covered with nacre. The finished cultured pearl was then harvested and carved to expose the inner core of gemstone. Experts said it couldn’t be done but designer Chi Galatea Huynh proved the experts wrong and gained recent world wide attention with his experiment and new art form.

South Sea and Tahitian pearls on the other hand are cultured in the warmer waters of the South Pacific and Indian Ocean and can produce much larger pearls up to as much as 18 mm in diameter with very good luster but not quite as high as the Japanese Akoya. Testimonials: I want to thank you and your employees for always being so helpful and pleasant. I have been a customer of Sayers Jewelers for nearly 60 years. Delaware Hair Solutions . . . Has two locations to serve you. Understanding Hair Loss
Millions of men and women suffer frustration and embarrassment Dee Anderson over the traumatic problems of – Owner excessive hair loss. It’s estimated that over 50% of men, by the age of 35, and 40% of women by the age of 40 will have a degree of baldness. Studies have proven that individuals with hair loss look older than they are. Hair loss is a normal part of the aging process. But with the technology and science available today we all have several options available to us to fight hair loss. Women can do very little to hide their problem. They are presumed to have health issues or, even worse, labeled as not caring about her appearance. She is embarrassed when she tries to go to the salon to get help. Too often, the stylist will tell her that there is nothing that he or she can do to help her. For the men who can’t shave their head or wear a hat to work, they too face the same dilemma as the women. They are often overlooked for promotions for a younger looking counterpart. They’re reluctant to even try hair replacement because of all the bad results they’ve seen in the media and even on their friends or family members. They don’t explore other resources to see if they really is something revolutionary that can give them back the look they lost, from no fault of their own.
Major causes of Hair Loss
Androgenetic Alopecia - medical term for male/female pattern hair loss Alopecia Areata - spots of hair loss ranging from a pea to an entire area on the head Alopecia Totalis - total hair loss of the scalp Alopecia Universalis - hair loss of the entire body Traction Alopecia - excessive stress or tension on the hair causing hair loss in the areas Tricitillamania - sensation by pulling the hair out at the follicle

Medical Conditions - high fever, extended use of antibiotics, surgery, pregnancy, thyroid, and of course, anti-cancer drugs
Laser Hair Therapy is a non surgical therapeutic laser. It is the most powerful laser that is safe for cosmetic purposes and fully complies with FDA standards for safety. LLLTHT is ‘Coldbeam’ laser technology. The power level is so low that it is virtually a mere vibration, harmless, but effective.
Delaware Hair Solutions provides the Following Options: Low Level Laser Hair Therapy ( LLLHT) Low Level Light Hair Therapy could be in a class by itself. Recently approved by the FDA to re-grow hair, LLLHT has taken hold in the market. In studies, 57% of individuals will re-grow hair, 85% will experience a halt in hair loss while 100% of users see a thickening of the hair shaft. Success is seen in those individuals who are in their first five years of hair loss. Not surprisingly, many scientists and physicians have been using low level laser over the years to speed up wound healing and produce new tissue. Studies have shown laser increases circulation and oxygenation of the blood to the scalp and the hair bulb. Laser also removes calcification and other blockages around the hair bulb; as well as increases cell replacement. Laser helps hair to improve in fullness, shine, body and elasticity; therefore problems such as over oily or dry scalp, as well as dandruff and itchiness can be reduced. To appreciate how it works, you need to understand the basics of how hair grows and replaces itself in the natural cycle of growth and regrowth. Every hair on one’s head usually grows for several years and then falls out. The root then rests for a few weeks before starting to re-grow a new hair. This cycle continues throughout our lives. Unfortunately, as we age, some people replace fewer hairs that are shed resulting in thinner hair and gradually baldness occurs. You don’t go bald or thin out because your hair falls out– it’s meant to do so. You go bald or thin out because it doesn’t grow back! Laser used on a regular basis strengthens and regenerates the hair roots. This slows or arrests, and in some cases, reverses the degenerative cycle as previously described. Once the hair root is dead, nothing can be done to restore them, so the sooner treatment is started, the better the results are. Noticeable improvement is achieved in 4- 6 months. However, if you have heavy hair fall-out, you may notice a reduced rate of heavy hair fall-out after a few treatments. Laser treatments are usually used in conjunction with topical treatments to further augment the effectiveness of both the laser and the products. Results vary from individual to individual.
Non Surgical hair replacement
Non-surgical hair replacement is the choice for more and more individuals because of the advances in technology and the natural look that’s now attainable. The options available with Virtual Reality have made the choice easier for many. The definition of hair replacement is any additional hair added to one’s existing hair or scalp to give the appearance of fuller, thicker hair. Compared to all other options, hair replacement and hair systems represent an affordable method with immediate results for solving hair loss. If a person is not happy with the

results, it can be reversed completely without any risk or scars. Today’s hair replacement has improved over the years. They no longer look like toupee or common wigs. The results are truly amazing in regards to creating a natural front hairline and a totally natural appearance. With today’s advanced technology, the systems are very light density and the base product is much thinner, like another layer of skin. Attachment methods allow the wearer total freedom. They can participate in normal activities, such as working out and swimming with no detection. There is also no need to remove anything before going to bed. Coverage can be just where the client needs the hair. Whether it’s just on the crown of the head or full head, the same natural look can be achieved. I’ve studied all the options, attend continuing education, and visited numerous studios to give you honest answers to your hair loss issues no matter what the situation may be.

First, there is silence in the room—nobody wants to confess what they think this class is going to be about. No one offers a hint of what’s on their mind. So I prompt them, “How many think this is going to be boring?” No hands go up—complete silence. So I prompt again, “You can be honest” One by one the hands shoot in the air—relieved to be allowed to say what they think, the discussion gets lively as they confess: they are dreading my class and that it’s going to be boring, and I will make them lift their pinky finger when they drink tea! I laugh, they relax, and then we all discuss the real reasons to learn etiquette. It’s never boring!
The Two Best Reasons to Learn Good Manners: You will have more confidence in all circumstances that you encounter & You will know how to put others at ease When we give children social skills, we increase self-esteem, their confidence grows, and they are less likely revert to attention seeking behaviors like Bullying as they learn better ways to communicate.

Road to Success: Bullying Prevention and Civility Program “Courtesy, politeness, manners, and civility are all, in essence, forms of awareness. Being civil means being constantly aware of others and weaving restraint, respect , and consideration into the very fabric of this awareness.” From: Choosing Civility By P.M. Forni, Co-Founder The Johns Hopkins Civility Project Teaching young people to be more Self-Aware is my first goal. The second step is to help students see that we all communicate with more than words and that they are ‘shouting loudly’ with their body language. Each time they choose to ‘exclude’ a classmate by using a mocking tone of voice or rolling their eyes, or whispering to shun, or cutting off a conversation they are using: Relational Aggression. The interesting thing about this topiconce the cat Is out of the bag—they all open up to discuss it, even admit to doing it. They get it! From there we move to the challenge of teaching students to Communicate with Empathy by teaching about tolerance, diversity, and the worth of all people. Finally, students can work on making good decisions and choosing to be kind, courteous, and respectful by practicing Civility. Then…We All Succeed Give your students the best chances to succeed in life. Enhancing Social Skills is worth the time and investment in all of our young people’s futures

Why Should You Advertise Your Business Or Profession in the Women’s Journal ?
THIS IS WHAT OUR ADVERTISERS SAY ABOUT THE
Women’s Journal
SUSANNE FAULKNER Faulkner Jewelry Design “The County Women’s Journal has been the greatest marketing tool for my business. People often say to me, “I see you everywhere!” And I secretly think to myself, no, I am not everywhere — I am in the County Women’s Journal.” MIKE SAMONZE, Vice President Institutional Advancement, Salve Regina University “A group of Women Newspapers that has opened up a whole new market for us.” JEWELRY EXCHANGE “I just wanted to let you know that the editorial that we did last issue was a great success for us. It brought us customers that were selling and gold that otherwise we probably would not have had. Our Gold / Silver buying aspect of our business is VERY important to us. We had a great response!” KRISTY HANDLEY, Marketing Director • State Street Assisted Living “I have worked with the Women’s Journal in two separate areas of my career. Each time, I continue to be impressed by the professionalism and compassion of the staff. The articles and advertisements are always perfect. If I have a problem, Pam is always there to help. What more could a Marketing Director ask for. Thank you!” J CHRISTIAN • J Christian Studio “The Women’s Journal has proven time and again to be the most advantageous and well-rounded business builder for the salon compare-none. Each new issue brings a sharp uptick in our referrals sometimes reaching 60 new referrals per article. The editors are fair, customer-service focused, and continuously improving on the paper year-after-year. We will contribute as long as they’ll have us.” JEAN ZIGLER, Patient Coordinator • Eye Physicians and Surgeons “Thanks to the Women’s Journal, many people now know about NearVision CK, a new technology to improve reading vision. When Dr. Minkovitz’s article first appeared in the Women’s Journal talking about being able to read without “granny glasses,” I was amazed at how much interest and excitement this new procedure generated. After her own CK procedure, our administrator Mary Ann Moore was so thrilled about being able to read the fine print again that she became our CK model. Because the Women’s Journal is so popular, Mary Ann is recognized everywhere she goes. I’m happy about being able to reach so many people through the Women’s Journal.” FOCAL POINT OPTICIANS “The Women’s Journal is the most successful advertising we have ever done.”

ANNA C. GIACALONE, DMD Artist in Cosmetic Dentistry “I have been in practice for over 22 years and always relied upon my patients and colleagues to refer new patients. I am honored by the trust these individuals place in me by referring friends but in recent years I realize that this is not enough. I knew I needed an ethical and tasteful way to let my community know about my ethics, practice philosophy and training. I found such a vehicle with The Women’s Journal. I feel good about helping to inform the readers about important health issues while simultaneously allowing them to get to know us. Many wonderful patients have found us as a result of our Women’s Journal articles.” AMY MARTA CARNEY, Owner Clutter Bugs, LLC “ The County Women’s Journal has been a wonderful experience for me and my business! I can’t thank them enough. Advertising with them has been a complete joy from start to finish. I have only had positive feedback and I know that will continue. I would not do it any other way!!” MELISA FERRIOLA, CPCP • Lasting Looks “Honestly, I was reluctant to do yet another print ad for my business. I had not seen results in past advertising attempts and it was hard to make another such investment. But something told me that The Women’s Journal would be different. Is it ever! I saw immediate, direct results in my business! The Women’s Journal reaches my target audience and because it is so informative to perspective clients, they follow through and I get the sale. I have the bottom line to prove it! Thank you so much.” FRED WINWARD, President Resort Landscaping “We have built our business on the readership of the Women’s Journal: I cannot believe the amount of business we receive from our articles.” JOAN CARRERO, Director of Marketing • NASE Insurance “The best customer response our company has ever had from our advertising dollar.” DR. BEN E. BENJAMIN, Founder Muscular Therapy Institute “The Women’s Journal readers who see me for treatment are earnest, intelligent people who are serious about their health and well-being. It is a pleasure to work with them. My articles in the Journal are worth their weight in gold.” BRENDA PAVLIC, CPhT SaveWay Compounding Pharmacy “We are getting tremendous feedback, I am really glad we did this, it has added more pressure, and bringing in more business, but worth it!”
CARMELLA GIBELLINO-SCHULTZ • Permanent Cosmetics “Thank you for your wonderful publication, it has been the single best advertising I have ever done in my 25 years in business. Effective, cost efficient, and a return on advertising investment, everything a business woman could ask for.”
