BUILDING STRUCTURE

Well, my collage is all connected to my personal attitudes. The personal mask that helps me do things without really having a personal attachment in my life. All my life, I live in fear, lack of confidence and poor social rating. I am an introverted type of person, I love to do things all by myself. In that way I can easily take off my mask and be myself again. During this time, I can do things far more than that I was expecting. Moreover, I can also focus on doing things with clarity and details, and a well- developed projects. I am not an anti-social type of person, but I don’t feel comfortable being with them. But, all of this thing change, when I realize that there are a lot of people who are always there for me, and who are always there to love me. They where the reasons that I no longer wear mask. I am who I am now, a jolly type of person who are more sociable and more detail oriented.

My first sign: - The first thing that comes out in my mind about my sign is the dragon. As I was doing it, I always had the same problem, which is the flexibility and the lightness of the materials that I need to used. For my experimentation process, I used tree materials, which are the following: - 1. sticks- barbeque sticks to be direct, every time I make a curve it always snap and break easily. Lack of flexibility - 2. plastic bottle- I had a problem about its physical structure of circular form that doesn’t fit with I was thinking - 3. madeleine cookies- it always break down every time I used a little force. - I learned a lot about this project, most especially about myself. All of the materials that I used in this project symbolizes a part of me and my previous self. I learned that in order for me to reach my goal, I need to step outside of my comfort zone, and learn how to socialize with others. That in the world of reality, without learning how to adapt, I will never be able to climb at the top.

SWOT ANALYSIS Strength: I learned how to be resourceful and be more creative and enjoy myself while working on this project. be able to execute what I think properly into a model version I learned new materials and new techniques with regards to constructing and visualizing my own structural model with the help of sketching. Weaknesses: Time management I didn’t know where to buy materials Design process organization Opportunity: New form of design new ways to speak my thought

A Journey of Discovery: In Search of Lost Wonder

What a special place to be in case of stress and problems. I was always fascinated with nature. In this place, it gives you the feeling of relaxation, hope, serenity, and understanding of how God works in a very mysterious ways. The smell of the beach, the sound of the waves, the taste of the salt air, the feeling of air touching my skin, and the wonderful sunset that gives color to my day. It evokes the feeling of infinite opportunity of life, the dark and the light side. The vast ocean of hope, that we always take for granted and care nothing.

In this place, it evokes the feeling of awareness, assertive and awe. While I was driving, I saw this amazing place, and I just can’t help myself not to go up in take a look. It gives me the feeling of cautiousness, that it might suddenly roll on me. But, as the time pass by, I feel how comfortable and calm this place is. It hides certain characteristics of being robust. That no matter the hard it is to live, it choose not to give up easily.

In this place, which is located somewhere in Half moon bay. I felt in love of the flexibility and the softness of every move that this plant made. Life is not a linear process, you can go up, side, and down, specially when you just keep on walking on the unknown path that you are setting for yourself. Keep in mind, that you need first to find your own niche before making your path. It evokes the feeling of serendipity, that you have the aptitude of making new discoveries no matter what the situation is.

When I was just a child, I always had this dream of flying on my own, just like superman or angels. It evokes the feeling of passion, strength, flexibility, wonder, and discoveries. How long will it takes for this little friend to cross the ocean? Can it make it? Or it will just give up? Those are the questions I had in my mind when I was looking on it.

It evokes the feeling of hope. That in every tunnel, there is always a light waiting for you. That in every storm, there is always a sun preparing to set its warm hugs on you. It inspires me to keep on moving forward, to keep on fighting, and to never give up on my dreams.

First, Iteration of model making. In my first model, I decided to make a semi-circular wall, that well be the place for relaxation. It was a curvature type of wall, because of the anthropometric functions. It well help people to concentrate more and relax, also it helps in reducing back pain and relieved stress.

FIRST ITERATION

INITIAL PLANS/ CONCEPTUAL DESIGN Before I make model, I make visual sketch first in order for me to be time organized and detail organized as well as quality organized. I learned this in the Philippines. It is much easier for me to build a model after I make sketches. So this project is the updated model from the previous one.

2nd ITERATION

3rd ITERATION

A circular structure for a 360 degrees views of the Clift and Mountain. This was located in a place 300 meters above the ocean. This will be one of the tourist attraction in my hometown. It was made of structural materials that can withstand wind and salt that damages metal. It evokes a feeling of mystery as you were walking to the entrance and turn into a romantic and well lighted and shaded structure that evokes a sense of passion, love and also wonder. There was a rooftop in order for the tourist to have a good view of both the ocean and the mountain.

4th ITERATIONS

I was really busy at this time, so I don’t have any idea about my design. It was a typical and literal design, that function as a look out. It was a house designed to framed up necessary natural views, that evokes wonder and beauty.

During this moment, I have a design in my mind, but it was so hard to put it into a model even though I did draw it. But to be honest, while I was working with this design, I was also working some ideas in my mind for my next iterations. This model helps me realize the gap between drawing and model making, but gives me more knowledge of how to build it in a much easier way. I learned the importance of unity and balance in the structure.

Jerry give the permission to go crazy. I’ve been waiting for this moment, because deep inside I had already a lot of design going through my mind. I make sketches first before building this rough draft, I was so fixated by symmetry, but I need to make it much more complex, so I decided to break it. I put vertical plane at the back to strengthen my design, and I add path ways at the other side to create hierarchy at the meddle.

For my next draft, I put much more detail and I also resize my previous model. I created the model that I was thinking while doing my 5th iterations. It was much crazier than before but more organized and detailed. I also consider some principles of design, which is hierarchy, repetition, and symmetry.

I think I’m lost.. Where is that place?

Wooooooo… I got too excited!!!

Oh yeah!!! There you are..YEEEEES

Heeeeeelp!!!!

I better get going now. Ninja mode.. Oh no it’s too high.

Oh, yeah!! I forgot I have a parachute

Uuuhm.. A portal?

Finally….

where am i?

Amazing..

Wooooow…

I love this place!!

Reflections: Incorporating all of the iterations I’ve done, and pushing myself always to make improvements in every project, I have accomplished this type of forms, I love it. My hard work pays off, and it’s worth it.

8th ITERATIONS

Reflections: I haven’t realize this before, it is much easier to build and construct miniature by knowing first the sizes and the looks of the materials in every corner of the building. It also organizes the materials and gives you enough estimate of how many of the materials you need to repeat. This is wonderful, in a way that it can easily make the structure more stable and compact, and also properly sizes.

Site selection and class building process schedule

Selected Site locations

Site Analysis: SITE FACTORS: 1. VIEWS 2. BIG EXPOSURE TO SUN 3. PROTECTED FROM WIND BUT EXPOSED TO VIEWS. 4. VEGETATED AREA, VEGETATION CAN BE INTEGRATED WITHIN THE DESIGN 5. RETAINING WALL/CLIFF LIKE FEELING

INSPIRATIONS:

In this iteration, I used tensioning to create a paraboloid in every sides of the triangle. It will hold the triangular structure together and prevent it from collapsing. Tensioning is also good in creating a framed view. Also, it creates a good shadow pattern that can evokes a sense of wonder in a place.

For my next iteration, I decided to use radial sectioning. It is much more site specific, because I consider both the sun path, site, location, geography, as well as the plants surrounding our site. It will create a much more complex structure that has the ability to adopt different angles of the sun. And it also create a very distinct views due to its own design features.

During the selection process, we all gathered up and explained our own design and its value. We decided to choose Oriol’s design, because it is buildable, site specific, and creates a very mysterious and adventurous type of structure.

Design Inspirations

Oriol’s Design structure

THE VIEWFINDER : Framing the Poetic from the Mundane Semi-elevated from the ground of the landscaped area along the Batmale Hall retaining wall and with an extensive view towards McLaren Park and its surroundings, the Viewfinder rises from the ground. It is meant to be an extension of the existing courtyard and once entered and experienced, it forms a visual bridge to the distant space beyond. The Viewfinder is a pergola-like structure that plays with the number three. Three main cubic forms made of 8 feet long 2x3’s (uncut standard stock dimensions) that are separated on 3 of its sides (both walls and ceiling) by a gap that is 3 times wider than the 2x3. The simple structure and components create a minimalistic shaded and protected area from which observe the views of McLaren Park and its surroundings. Because of its design, the structure creates a series of informal spaces with step seating that invites visitors to relax or enjoy a conversation. The repetition of three imparts both a sense of unity and consistent logic to this environmental installation. The cubes, 8 feet tall by 8 feet wide, create a formal structure that breaks the irregularity of the terrain but that is integrated on it. The gaps in the floor create an intriguing experience since they allow the viewer to look beyond the floor and see the existing ground and shrubbery that is both hidden and revealed. Thus, the natural and the synthetic, the existing and the new are synthesized into a new and multi-layered whole. The three cubic forms create a passage-like experience. The first cubic form, placed in the ground level, elevates the visitor and starts the beginning of the interior experience of the View finder. The second structure has a small platform that makes the visitor to stop and have a first experience of the views. In that platform, the visitor is placed in the middle of the structure and it also experiences being surrounded by the structure. The third cube, located at the higher point opens up to the views and creates in the visitor a feeling of openness similar to the one that one experiences when facing a cliff. At this terminal end, there is an appreciable difference in elevation between the final platform and the existing road below and beyond the already in-place retaining wall. Reasonable danger is an intentional experience to be evoked! The wood boards of the floor are set with a board-wide gap. They create a solid structure with a little bit of movement that triggers in the visitor a small feeling of fear, danger and keeps him/her awake throughout the visit. The sides and ceiling are made of the same type of material but with bigger gaps between them created but custom made spacers. The bigger gaps create smaller gaps that act as frames of smaller views, they also create a feeling of semi privacy. When there is direct sunlight hitting the structure, the alternation of gaps and boards cast interesting shadows within the structure and in its surroundings. The visual and spatial experiences are further enhanced by the application of color, which on one level, relates to the distant horizon and forms a datum from which changes in elevation can be measured; and on another level‌

Narrative:

DESIGN EVOLUTION INSPIRATIONS: SECTIONING

Designing, a very easy way to speak and to talk about, but it is probably the hardest and the most time consuming part of the architectural life. During the course of this class, we learned so many things with regards to design. We learned to makes mistakes and to go out of our comfort zone. We became crazy and be more sensitive in every nook and cranny of our structure. With the help of all of this design process and lots of iterations, we learned how to appreciate everything. Sectioning, it is a series of profiles whose edges follow the lines of surface geometry are assembled as serialize and parallel section to produce both surface and structure. We are inspired by its structural approach to the people. It respects both natural things surrounding it, with regards to its welcoming features as well as the people who are visiting it. 69

SITE CHALLENGE CONSIDERATIONS Problems: 1. Existing Post - it blocked and overwhelmed our structure. 2. Angles/Framing - there is an existing house besides the soccer field that blocks the view. 3. Sun Path - poor shadow pattern and shading Site specific

DESIGN EVOLUTION Studies: Every weekday, in the morning, we visit the site to learn how the sun affects the overall quality of the structure. During those visits, we also talked about the existing problems that we were facing. Solutions: With further analysis and studies, we decided to move the structure a little bit, pointing towards the water tank. That decision helped to create a good shadow inside and outside the structure. Moreover, it also helped to frame a better view as well as to incorporate the post as part of the design.

70

In order for us to know the exact nails and materials to be used in our structure, we ask few questions and advice to a guy who’s been working in the home depot for a few years. He was so nice and helpful. We also ask a young guy to help us in accessing the newest lumber that they had.

Building Process:

After 3 hours in the first day of building, we finished two separate elements of our design. Well done!

For the second and third elements of the structure, we built first a foundation floor to help us in connecting each elements, and also to strengthen the foundation of our overall design.

At the beginning of the project we were given a total school budget of $250.00. Along with an accounting report package that needed to be filled out after every purchase materials. We spent the majority of the school budget on the 2x3 wood. There are items to be returned such as the eye bolt and the strings. The group decided to add an extra $50.00 of our own funds in case we went over our budget. However after we completed all the purchases and the school budget was exhausted the only overage from our own funds was a total of $13.75 from each. And at the end after a couple of returned items and a purchase the school has a remaining card balance of $14.18 and each of us get $36.25 back. The returned items of $20.96 had to go back to the original form of payment which is a store card. Overall the most important thing is that the overage was minimal. The group decided to establish folders on google drive for any updates and changes or issues regarding the the build project. In progress 78

CONCLUSIONS 1.

During the course of the semester, we learned a lot of things from Jerry. We learned how to think out of the box and be crazy but we also learned design principles and design language that we incorporated for in our environmental structure.

1.

We also learned that it is alright to make a mistake. As long as we learn from them! They help us to grow stronger and sometimes they also open our mind for new options.

1.

During the design and building process we learned how important it is to work as a team and to respect each other and listen to everyone’s suggestions and ideas.

1.

We learned a lot about design but also about construction and the big gap between them. We also learned that planning in advance and consciously, is an strategy that save us time and effort.

Overall, besides learning we also had a very good time and we will not forget the Viewfinder and the lessons learned in Arch 101.
